About Mahasivaratri
According to the Puranas, during the great churning of the ocean called Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. The devas and the asuras were terrified as it could destroy the world. They ran to Sri Shiva for help. Sri Shiva drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat instead ovf swallowing it. This turned his throat into blue and since he came to be known as “Neelakantha” which means the blue-necked one. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated to offer prayers to Sri Shiva for saving the universe from the imbalances. Actual meaning of Maha Shivaratri is “the great night of Shiva” or “the night of great Shiva”. It is also believed that on this day Sri Shiva was married to Parvati.

(April 1, 1889 – June 21, 1940) Param Poojaneeya Doctorji
Dr. Keshava Baliram Hedgewar RSS Founder Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar was the founder of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Hedgewar founded the RSS in Nagpur, Maharashtra in 1925, with the intention of promoting the concept of the Hindu nation. Dr. Hedgewar was born in 1889 on Gudi Padwa day YUGAADI, the New Year for people from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. He hailed from a family which was originally from Kundakurti, a small village in Bodhan taluka Nizamabad Dist. near the border of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh states.
WISHESH DIGITAL | MARCH 2016
Keshav Baliram Hedgewar was born on Varsha Pratipada, the Hindu New Year Day, 1st April 1889, at Nagpur. Even as a child he started questioning how a handful of foreigners could for so long rule over a vast and ancient nation like Bharat. No wonder that he threw away the sweets distributed on the occasion of the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria’s coronation. He was eight years old at the time. When studying in high school he started participating in nationalist activities, and, in fact, unfurled the banner of independence during Dusserah at Rampayali in 1907. The intensity of his urge to free the Motherland grew steadily. In 1908, he was expelled from school for leading the students in raising the ‘seditious’ cry of ‘Vande Mataram’. He had to move to Pune to complete his matriculation. Hedgewar opted for a medical course in Calcutta, chiefly prompted by the prospect of getting first-hand acquaintance with the underground movement. He soon became a core member of one of the leading revolutionary groups called Anusheelan Samiti, and also plunged himself into various social-service activities. When the river Damodar was in floods in 1913, he rushed to join the relief team. He returned to Nagpur in 1916 as a qualified doctor. However, he did not (indeed never intended to) practise medicine despite dire poverty at home. Remaining a bachelor, he preferred to become a physician to cure the ills of the nation. By then, he had established

Describing an ideal public worker, Doctorji once said :
He is not like an ochre-robed monk. He does not proclaim, ‘I make no distinction between gold and mud.’ He knows the difference quite well, but he is not enamoured of the glitter of gold. He willingly says, ‘The gold is for the society. I shall be content with mud.’ He painstakingly churns milk and extracts butter. He knows the difference between butter and butter-milk (diluted curds) ; and yet he prefers the latter for himself and willingly offers the butter to society. It is only such a worker who can render true service and also inspire the spirit of sacrifice in the people.”

Cover Story
Varsha Pratipada Although there are hundreds of utsavs celebrated within Hindu society, Sangh has taken up celebrating six utsavs – which are symbolic in nature – as part of its regular activities. Sangh has selected those utsavs which promote certain qualities and imprint samskaras that are essential for organizing the Hindu society
Three out of six utsavs represent the victory of ill-equipped divine forces over formidable and well equipped asuric forces. In prehistoric times it was VijayaDashami, the victory of Lord Rama. In ancient history it was VarshaPratipada, the victory of Shalivahana. And in recent history, it was Hindu Samrajya Dinotsavam, Shivaji’s coronation. And these three utsavs have been selected primarily to remove the undue, unjustified, and undeserved diffidence and inferiority complex of Hindus, to restore their valor and history, and to promote a sense of confidence – like Jambavan reminding Hanuman of his potential. Though, by coincidence, VarshaPratipada WISHESH DIGITAL | MARCH 2016
happens to be Param Pujaniya Doctorji’s birthday, we do not celebrate it in Sangh as his birthday. Sangh, under the ‘margadarshan’ of Doctor-ji himself, has adopted the spirit of worshipping an ideal and not an individual. As a birthday of an elderly family member is celebrated at one’s home, in Sangh we perform the Adya SaraSanghachalak Pranam – and that to before hoisting our ‘Guru’ the Bhagawa dhwaj – out of sheer love and respect for Doctor-ji. As swayamsevaks, we offer our respect and regards to the great hero who was an epoch maker, a drashta (visionary). Since he was against personal fame and glory, if not Sangh, who else will remember him? 8
Varsha Pratipada (also known as Yugadi, Navreh, Gudi padwa etc) is celebrated as Hindu new year based on the Lunar calendar. Hindu festivals are based on one of the two calendars - based on relative position of earth and sun (Solar Calendar) or relative position of moon around earth (Lunar Calendar) . It is important to remember that there is not Kannada New year, Telugu New Year or Tamil New Year. They are Hindu Lunar New year, Hindu Solar New Year (Around Apr 14th ). They have different names in different regions - Gudi padva (lunar New year), Baisakhi (solar new year) (see another article at the end of the email for more details). The festival is known by different local names but have the common theme of auspicious beginning to the new year with new clothes and family festivities. Rituals signify local beliefs but the underlying sense of joyous celebration is the common theme. This festival signifies the first day in the month of Chaitra. Since there is a usual difference of about 10 – 15 days between the solar and lunar calendar years, the festival is known as Chandramana Yugadi (Lunar Yugadi) or Sowramana Yugadi (Solar Yugadi)
In some parts of Bharat, the tender leaves of neem mixed with jaggery are distributed on the occasion. The neem, extremely bitter in taste, and jaggery sweet and delicious, signify the two conflicting aspects of human life - joy and sorrow, success and failure, ecstasy and agony – both a part of life that we accept every year. The practical aspect of this is that neem leaves are known for their strong antibiotic property and since they are too bitter, they are mixed with Jaggary (brown sugar) so that everyone can eat a small pinch of the mixture and thereby become less prone to the various infections that set in during the warm months. This also embodies one of the highest philosophical attitudes taught by the Hindu spiritual masters. Sri Krishna says -
Duhkheshwanudvignamanaah Sukheshu vigatasprihah | Veetaraagabhayakrodhah sthitadheermuniruchyate || Not being agitated in sorrow, and free from desire for pleasure, sensual attachments, fear and anger such a person is called Sthitaprajna - one who has acquired equanimity
Historical Significance
Significance for Sangh
This day awakens in us the memories of our great epoch-makers and their immortal achievements.
For Sangh there is a happy and meaningful coincidence, in that the great founder of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, was also born on this very day of Yugaadi of 1889.
The founding of new Eras in the names of Vikrama and Shalivahana signifies the supreme importance accorded in the Hindu history and tradition for safeguarding the nation’s freedom and sovereignty. Both these great warriors inspired the people of Bharat to fight off the attacks from foreign hordes WISHESH DIGITAL | MARCH 2016
It is on this occasion of Varsha Pratipada that we as Swayamsevaks show our love and respect for Doctorji., in the form of Adya Sarsangachalak Pranam before even the Bhagwa is hoisted.

All About
Indian Classical
Music
By: Shreya Vijayvargiya 5th Grade ( Shakti Shaka)
Music! Everyone is familiar with this wordMusic! So, what is this music? Is it the sound that we hear around us such as the rustling of leaves in the wind, the pattern of water droplets, roaring engines, and ringing of mobile phones? Well, no. According to dictionary, music is vocal, instrumental, or both sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotions. I started learning Indian classical music at the age of five. This music has affected my life by giving me more opportunities to go on stage. Also I have gained more knowledge and learned interesting facts about my Indian culture. When I was very little I used to keep on humming or singing and used to make my own tunes. Seeing this, my parents encouraged me to learn music. When I listened to other famous Indian classical singers, I accepted the fact that this type of music was really awesome and I started liking it.

Background: Indian classical music is an art of music in India. Classical music’s origin can be found in the Vedas, one of the oldest Indian scriptures, and came from all the way back till the 1500 BCE. Classical music is serious and conventional music following longestablished principles rather than a folk, jazz, or popular tradition.
Categorization: Till 400~500 years ago, there was only one type of Indian classical music, but as north India was invaded the music got influenced by Persians, Mughals, and other countrys’ music. Now, there are the two types of Indian Classical music: Hindustani Carnatic Hindustani is north Indian music and Carnatic is south Indian music. Hindustani and Carnatic music have many similarities as well as some differences.
DIFFERENCES Languages used for composition are different (Hindustani: Hindi, Urdu, Braja bhaasha & Panjabi. Carnatic: Tamil, Telugu, Kanadi and Malayalam). Base instruments are different (Hindustani music uses tabla, while Carnatic music uses mridangam). Name of raagas are different. The placement of notes are different. The compositions are raagas, gazals, and other compositions. There are so many raagas that there is no exact count of raagas in Indian classical music.
Power of Classical Music: In 16th century, there was a great musician in north India called Ramtanu Pandey. He was one of the nine jewels in the court of Akbar and was honored by the name “Mian Tansen” by Akbar. Mian means learned man. It has been heard that Tansen had the power to light up fire with his song called Raag Deepak and he had taught his Daughter to bring rain by singing the Megh Malhar.
SIMILARITIES Both use Sanskrit language Both use similar supporting instruments (violin, tanpura, flute) Both have seasonal raags (Raag: A piece or composition sung at a specific time of the day). Both have aalaaps (expansion of notes).
WISHESH DIGITAL | MARCH 2016
This great art is still getting passed down from generation to generations. There are many famous Indian classical singers, such as Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Kumar Gandharva, and Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande etc. As music gives joy to everybody, it can be a great enjoyable hobby. Keep listening and singing music…!!!

Q&A
Hinduism Volume 3
Hinduism is the oldest religion of this world. During the period when people in other areas were hunting down animals, the great Hindu sages, holy men and Kings were leading their people in virtuous life by chanting the vedas, carrying out great yagas (yagna) and medical research in Sittha, Ayurveda and also in astronomy. Q: What is it to be a Hindu? Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life. Unlike other world religions, it does not prescribe any do’s and don’ts. It allows you to live life the way you like. It allows freedom of thought. You do not have to agree with its philosophy unless you are convinced about it. Buddha questioned the authority of WISHESH DIGITAL | MARCH 2016
the Vedas, Adi Shankaracharya reformed Hinduism, yet not one of these critics was harmed unlike the Sufi saints who proclaimed they were God. It has a very broad encompassing philosophy and is a tolerant religion. It is a relentless pursuit of truth. You have to discover its philosophy yourself. It absorbs new ideas very easily. Unfortunately, some evils like the rigid 14
caste system, superstitions have crept in over the years. By nature, Hindus are not fanatics, violence is abhorred, they forgive their enemies even those who could be a threat to their lives (Remember how Prithviraj Chauhan set Mahmud Ghazni free inspite of defeating him in battle, only to be killed by the same man later ).You know Hindu religion never persecutes. It is a personal religion. You can pray sitting at home. No need to ask other Hindus to come and pray by using a loudspeaker. Of the two patriots Mahatma Gandhi and Veer Savarkar, the Mahatma a preacher of non-violence was more popular. Hindus have this great propensity to put the past behind them, move on with their lives (think of your grandfather, a Punjabi refugee who left Lahore without a penny during Partition but is a very wealthy man today), and absorb foreigners in to their culture. Quote Allana Iqbal “There has to be something about the entity of this civilisation that has defied destruction despite repeated onslaught by its enemy’s centuries after centuries.”
Q: But why are Hindus slaves of idol worship and a large number of Gods? The Vedas do not talk about idol worship. In fact, till about 2000 years ago Hindus never worshipped idols. Idol worship was started by the followers of Lord Buddha. There is logic to idol worship. Hinduism speaks of one God that is the supreme self in man i.e. Atman or soul. Different Gods and Goddesses are manifestations of the powers and functions of the one supreme
God. The human mind suffers from many diseases that need to be cured by specialists. One God cannot help a Hindu to get rid of all his problems. Every God has his own core competency as Michael Porter says. Man is full of desires. To fulfill these desires he relentlessly pursues acquisition of materialistic objects. Desires create agitations in our minds preventing us from concentrating on any one object. Religion helps us control our desires and concentrate our mind on pursuing the Self within. To make this happen, Hinduism has thought of Gods and rituals, festivals. By this man is reminded of the Supreme even while he is pursuing desires e.g. the Lord of Wealth is Laxmi. Every stockbroker while trying to make money on the stock market has a statute or photo of the Goddess of wealth in his office to remind him that there are is a touch of divinity in his pursuits. By worshipping an idol you are able to converge your thoughts and mind to improve your power of concentration. This helps you clear your mind of desires making it fit for meditation. It helps you peep into your souls, understand ourselves and form conclusions about right and wrong. Idols are a tool to achieve self realization and nothing else.
Q: Who were the first Law Givers of Hinduism? They were the sages Manu, Yatnavalkya, Parasara and Gauthama. Their books were called Dharma Sutras, the most important one being Manusmriti. The name Manu means, Patriarchal Earth Ruler.

Story
Why Speak the truth ? Kabir, the poet - saint was humming a doha(a couplet) as he sat weaving in his hut. It is natural for saints to revel in divine thoughts, even while engaged in work. Suddenly, the front door of his hut was thrown open and there stood a ruffian, “Quick, show me a place to hide, the policeman is after me!” demanded the intruder rather rudely. Kabir calmly pointed to bales of cotton huddled together and said, “There! There you will be safe!”
“I am trying to nab a thief, I saw him running in this direction. Did you see him?” Kabir, in his unique style, casually pointed to the bales of cotton. The policeman, looked at Kabir’s face and thought that Kabir was lost in his own world, like saints are. So he did not take him seriously and left hurriedly. After sometime, the thief emerged safely from the bales of cotton and confronted Kabir, “You are a saint. You are supposed to protect anyone who takes refuge in you, even if he

What if I had been exposed?” “My dear friend, “ Kabir spoke to the robber affectionately. “I spoke the truth since I was sure that only truth was capable of protecting you. If I had uttered a lie, it would have landed both of us in trouble. Truth alone saves us in the long run. Falsehood leads to ruin and sorrow.” The thief gave up his wrong ways and became Kabir’s disciple. Source : kids.baps.org

HOME REMEDIES
to Protect Skin from Summer Tan If you don’t take enough care from UV rays, you will end up with different shades of darkness at the end of the summer. Most of us live in an illusion that we need to burn the pockets to buy such expensive spa products that help you in lighten the tan. Not necessary, here are some quick homemade remedies that can be easily prepared but with a little patience.
Lemon and Aloe Vera Face Pack This is one of the most effective home remedies to remove tan. Lemon can be used as a bleaching agent to lighten your skin tone naturally without causing any harm to it. All you need to do is juice a lemon and besides that also mash the aloe vera leaves. Mix them properly until an aromatic paste is formed. Apply this onto the tanned area of the skin and allow it to dry. You need to apply this paste twice or thrice a day to cleanse and prevent your skin from getting tanned from time-to-time. This is also an effective cure for dark circles around eyes.
Turmeric Powder, Yogurt and Honey Face Pack Turmeric or holy powder used in this face pack makes it a potent homemade remedy for tan removal and as a moisturizing agent for treating dry skin in summer. In summer, it is really required to keep your skin moist because the body is much subjected to dehydration. This results in dry skin, and it loses its luster in the process. In order to overcome this, it is better to keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water from inside and outside too. Make a thick paste by mixing all the three ingredients well. Apply this pack on the dried skin and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Later, rinse it off with cold water. This pack helps in moisturizing and radiating your skin under the dire circumstances. Tips
Sandal wood and Rosewater Face Pack This face pack can be used as a cleanser. Make a thick paste of white or red sandalwood powder and rosewater and apply it to face. Wait for 20 minutes and allow it to dry. After this wash it with cold water and always use a soft towel to clean up your washed face. This paste relieves you from sun burns and other suntan effects. The above-mentioned face packs are completely natural, and will help you in removing the tan gradually. These above face packs will help in summer, and all other seasons accordingly. It is suggested to clean your face before applying such packs so that the dust and other small particles don’t stay inside. Remember that you should never apply these face packs on the unclean face. Always use a soft cloth to clean your face after washing.
Curd and Gram Flour Face Pack This face pack is one of the time-tested home remedies for tanning that can also be used as a scrub or exfoliator that is the most effective natural solution to the question of how to get rid of dead skin cells from the skin surface. Take curd and gram flour in equal quantities and mix well by adding lemon juice in proportions. Apply this paste to face, neck and other body parts such as hands and feet. Pat it dry and wash it with warm water. This can be applied twice a week which ultimately results in soft glowing skin.
