Guru Purnima Guru Purnima or Vyasa Purnima. Vyasa was not only born on this day, but also to have started writing the Brahma Sutras on ashadha sudha padyami, which ends on Poornima. Vyasa divided the original single Veda into four parts called Rik, Yajus, Saman and Atharvan. Vyasa entrusted each Veda to one of his chief disciples for Smriti (memorization)and propagation with the help of elaborate and complicated Svara(intonation)and Patha(recitation) rules and methods. This is because the meaning of Veda is dependent on Svara. Rishi Paila was entrusted with the Rigveda. Rishi Vaishmpayana with Yajurveda. Rishi Jaimini with Samaveda. Rishi Sumantu with Atharvanaveda.

Study and preservation of the core Veda is a highly technical, and specialized task. It is difficult to access the Veda and its contents in a meaningful way for people who are not directly engaged in the Vedic studies. Therefore Vyasa collated eighteen chief Puranas including the Mahabhagavata and eighteen subsidiary Puranas which bring out the message of Vedas within the popular reach. Then Veda Vyasa conceived the Jaya or Bharata which was later swelled into the great Mahabharata which contains the famous popular philosophical guide Bhagavadgita. It is the story of his own progeny playing out the great real life drama of the conflict between Dharma and aDharma. Hence Vyasa is considered as Vishnu Avatara- Vyasaaya Vishnu ruupaaya. It is said that all the knowledge in the world has been wetted by Vyasa’s mouthVyaasochhistam Jagat sarvam. He is the GURU par excellence.

Significance of Guru Purnima in HSS Guru Pournima is one of the Utsavs celebrated in the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh. HSS has considered Bhagawa Dhwaj as its guru and we pay our respect to the Bhagawa Dhwaj instead of a person. This festival is considered extremely important for the philosophical foundation of our beloved Sangh and undoubtedly has its auspicious role in Hinduism and our Punya Matrubhumi. The Bhagawa Dhwaj is the most resplendent emblem of this sublime philosophy. And, worship of this holy flag on this Guru Poornima Day is intended to instill in us this positive Hindu attitude towards life. The ceremonial worship of the flag through flowers accompanied by monetary offering is just an external expression of this attitude of surrender to the ideal. Real worship, for a Hindu, lies in becoming an image of the idea himself. Shivo bhootwa shivam yajet – one has to become Shiva Himself if one has to worship Shiva. WISHESH DIGITAL | AUGUST 2016

My Experience at SSV I will be telling you my experience about last week’s SSV (Sangh Shiksha Varg) in Yosemite, California. SSV is a seven-day training camp where you learn how to do many new and fun things including archery, shooting, and hiking. You also learn how to do niyuddha (Indian martial arts). From Phoenix, I arrived at the Oakland airport. From there Srijeeth Ji and others drove us to the camp. On the way, I was mostly asleep because of the nice, cool weather. Finally, When I arrived at Camp Pacifica which was where SSV was conducted, I was a tiny bit nervous and WISHESH DIGITAL | AUGUST 2016

thought that I wouldn’t make friends. But in the end, I made a lot of great friends. At SSV, I loved how everything was organized in an orderly way. For example, we did geet, athletic activities, shakha, and one craft every day. One of my favorite things at SSV was shakha. We did shakha every day and I learned many new games and naras. One of the new naras I learned was “Icecream, Chocolate, Lollipop” “Hindus are on the top‼” I had a great time at SSV and it was a lot of fun. I can confidently tell with my experiences that you will 1. Learn lots of new things from

new friends/shikshaks, and 2. You will also have a lot of fun as you will get a chance to be in nature most of the time! In conclusion, I hope you understand going to SSV for seven whole days will be a fun and great experience that you will never forget.

My Holiday Trip

At last, the day has come. I am in the plane looking at the big, white, fluffy clouds. Finally, after four hours we reached Detroit. We rented car from airport and drove to Anil Uncle’s house who is dad’s college friend. He has two sons namely Sidharth and Rishi and it was fun playing together. Next Day we drove to Canada to see the Niagara Falls.

The next day we went on a boat to see the Niagara Falls closely. It was huge. By the time we got off the boat my brother Ushas and I were dripping wet because of the water. After that we visited the Skylon Tower. We went to the top and saw the whole Falls. Next we went through the tunnels under the Falls. It was very cold there.

In the middle of the drive, we stopped by at a safari park. I saw monkeys sitting on cars and an Ostrich was biting the mirror on our car.

Then we drove to Virginia. In the middle on the way we stopped by at a chocolate factory. We got to see how they make chocolate, the history behind it and tasted it. The chocolate was so delicious. We drove to my dad’s friend’s house; whose name is Seenu Uncle. He is having two daughters namely Manasi and Priya. It was fun playing with them.

I liked the Giraffes and elephant show the most. After the safari, we drove and reached Niagara Falls. We enjoyed watching the waterfall which was lit up with colorful lights. The water was falling so fast that I felt like it was snow. After some time, they started doing Fireworks display above the Niagara Falls. It looked AWESOME!

WISHESH DIGITAL | AUGUST 2016

Next we went to Washington D.C. and visited the Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. We went to the Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol Building and saw statues of Vietnam war Soldiers

also. Finally, we went to Pankaj Uncle’s house who is Dad’s college friend. He is having three kids namely Jeev, Ram, and Pragya. They are funny and playful. They have four cute pet birds and we enjoyed feeding them. After that we drove to our hotel in New Jersey with three other families. The next day we went on a ferry boat to the Statue of Liberty. It was beautiful. Then we went to Empire State Building. I could see whole New York city from there. We also went to the 9/11 Memorial Place and took pictures with all the four family members. Then we went to my mom’s classmate Sharada. Sharda has two kids named Ankita and Pranav. They were very friendly. The next day we drove to Detroit and went to Dr. Rama aunt’s house. Their house was super big! We went to an Indian restaurant for lunch and the food was yummy! . Finally, we went To the Henry Ford Museum. Learned how they make cars today. It was amazing. Finally, we went to the airport to return to Phoenix. That is the story of my holiday trip.

Q&A

Hinduism Volume 7

Hinduism is the oldest religion of this world. During the period when people in other areas were hunting down animals, the great Hindu sages, holy men and Kings were leading their people in virtuous life by chanting the vedas, carrying out great yagas (yagna) and medical research in Sittha, Ayurveda and also in astronomy.

Q: Is Yoga a Hindu Practice? Deeply rooted in Hindu scripture and belief, yoga is, and always was, a vital part of Hindu religion and culture. Today it is embraced by tens of millions of nonHindus seeking its renowned benefits to physical, mental and spiritual health. In recent years a vigorous debate has arisen as to whether yoga is intrinsically a Hindu practice or a universal science. The word yoga has changed as the practice moved west. Its original meaning, “union with God,” has been replaced with the more secular definition presented by upscale yoga studios around the world that teach a regimen of asanas along with basic breathing and a little meditation. A typical studio ad focuses on the physicality, stating that “yoga increases the circulation of oxygen-rich blood, nourishing and detoxifying the internal organs, musculature, cardiovascular, immune, endocrine, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems.” The United States alone has over 20 million practitioners, and there are hundreds of millions worldwide.

Q: How do Hindus view other religions? Hindus honor all religious traditions and the people within them. While regarding our faith as uniquely endowed, we believe that there is no exclusive path, no one way for all. In India, where Hindus are the overwhelming majority, the rights of minority religions have always been honored. Hindus have welcomed, embraced and lived peacefully among

WISHESH DIGITAL | AUGUST 2016

other religions for centuries. During those same centuries, Hinduism itself evolved into hundreds of strains, and thus Hindus are fully at home with many different traditions and viewpoints within their own faith. Hence, they are naturally tolerant of other religions, respecting the fact that each has unique beliefs, practices, goals and paths of attainment, and not objecting when the doctrines of one conflict with those of another. Hindus readily accept the idea that it is not necessary, desirable or even possible for everyone to hold the same beliefs. And certainly such differences should never be cause for tension, criticism, intolerance or violence.

Q: Why do some Hindu Gods have animal features? In dreams and visions the inner-plane beings have revealed themselves to mankind to be of many forms, expressing many powers. Some appear human, and others, like Ganesha, have animal features. The various Gods in Hinduism’s wideranging traditions possess distinct personalities and forms based on how they have been seen in visions and how they are depicted in stories and legends. Hindus feel no need to question the fact, for instance, that Lord Ganesha has the head of an elephant. They know He has been seen in this way by rishis and even by ordinary devotees. Did He choose that form to distinguish Himself as the Lord of Obstacles? No one really knows. The important fact is that millions of Hindus worship and receive blessings from the benevolent Elephant-Faced God every day. Many Hindus seeking an explanation hold that Ganesha is a real being who

23

Q&A looks like an elephant. Others believe the elephant form is symbolic. Millions are content with the ancient stories in the Puranas that explain how He came to have an elephant head. Interestingly, and perhaps because of His endearing visage, Ganesha is the most popular of all the Hindu Deities. Numerous other Hindu Divinities have animal attributes, including Hanuman, Varuna, Kamadhenu, the Nagas, the vahanas (animal mounts of the Gods) and four of Vishnu’s ten incarnations (fish, turtle, boar and half-man-half-lion). Over the millennia, worship and awareness of Deities with animal features was eclipsed in most cultures as the monotheistic religions grew into prominence. Were these beings mere myth and imagination, as depicted by modern scholars? Or were the peoples of ancient times aware of a mystical reality that has been sealed off? In most cultures, the old Gods have been put in exile. Only in Hinduism does such worship thrive in unbroken continuity. One might note the obvious fact that Homo sapiens, too, is an animal species, one among many.

Q: Why do Hindus cremate the dead?

life and give momentum to the soul for its continuing spiritual journey. Hindus traditionally cremate their dead because a fiery dissolution of the body brings swifter, more complete release of the soul than burial, which preserves the soul’s psychic connection to its just-ended earthly life. After death, the departed soul hovers close to the earth plane in its astral body, emotionally attached to the physical body and its old surroundings, still able to see this material world. The funeral rites and burning of the body signify spiritual release, notifying the soul that, in fact, death has come. Some of the funeral chants address the deceased, urging the soul to relinquish attachments and continue its spiritual journey. The Gods and devas are invoked to assist the soul in its transition. The fire severs ties to earthly life and gives momentum to the soul, granting at least momentary access to refined, heavenly realms. All attention is on a singular goal, as expressed in this prayer from the Rig Veda: “Release him again, O Agni, to the fathers. The one offered to you now proceeds to his destiny. Putting on new life, let him approach the surviving, let him reunite with a [new] body, All-Knowing One!”.

Vijayanagara

The Great Empire

he Great Empire of Vijayanagara was from 1336-1678, from Harihara Raya to Sriranga Raya the 3rd. Some of the greatest Kings and Emperors ever ruled this Mighty Empire that led the Entire Kingdom to Prosper like never heard of before that time, starting the very first modern trade with Europeans and Middle East nations. The period from 1336 to 1565 and again from 1566 to 1620 are considered the best of all time for South and Western India. This one Hindu Kingdom literally kept 5 Muslim kingdoms – Golconda, Bidar, Bijapur, Berar, and Ahmadnagar – sleepless. Every underpinning of the modern amenities of this region including the rice growing rich alluvial agricultural lands of the deep south India were the great creation of The Vijayanagara rulers. The greatest period was from 1509-1529 under Sri Krishnadeva Raya. There were at least 7 other great kings who all kept the prosperity of the Kingdom alive against rampaging islamic marauders. Vijayanagara Rulers were the ones who setup the Nayaka Kings at Madurai and Thanjavur, who were later won over by the Valiant Marathas. The Vijayanagara rulers were an awesome inspiration to The Marathas who already shared the same disdain toward alien Muslim rulers.

The Bigger Picture Once upon a time, there lived four blind men in a small village. The four blind men always spent time with each other. One day, as they were walking through the village, they heard a lot of noise. Walking in the direction of the noise, they came across a huge animal. None of the four blind men knew what they had bumped into! As you know, blind people use their other four senses to understand what they cannot see. So they began to touch the animal.
