FREEDOM FIGHTER
RANI LAKSHMIBAI November 19, 1828 - June 18, 1858
Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi was probably the bravest of all the leaders who fought for India’s independence against the mighty British. She died in battle as she led the Indian mutiny in 1857, the first armed uprising against British rule. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi will always be remembered for her unbreakable patriotism and astonishing courage.
I
n the early part of 1800, when the British were already well established in India, Manikarnika or Manu (the maiden name of Lakshmibai) was born in the family of a courtier, Moropant, in Bittoor, a place located in Central India. Manu was very athletic and loved to compete with boys. She was also an avid reader with a love for learning. When Manu reached marriageable age, quite unexpectedly, a marriage proposal came from the Maharaja (king) of Jhansi. She was married a year later, in 1842. Manu was named Rani or queen Lakshmibai, after the goddess of wealth and victory.
After nine years, Lakshmibai gave birth to a son. All of Jhansi celebrated the happy event. Alas, the child died after three months. Both Lakshmibai and the Maharaja were grieve stricken. The Maharaja was also unwell and was worried that he had no successor to the throne. He knew the British would not lose the opportunity to take January/2015

over the kingdom of Jhansi if it were left without an heir. He quickly arranged to adopt a son in November, 1853. On the following day, the Maharaja died. The prince was still a minor. Lakshmibai decided to run the kingdom until the adopted son reached maturity.
fat, both Muslims and Hindus revolted as eating pork is against the Muslim faith, and eating beef is against the Hindu faith. On May 9, 1857, British officers were shot and prison inmates were released. The rebelling nationalist soldiers marched to Delhi and received a warm welcome from the citizens. The aged ex-emperor, Bahadur Shah, was reinstated to the Mughal throne and Delhi became the nationalist soldiers’ headquarters. Later they seized Lucknow and Satara and pushed the British soldiers southwards to Jhansi. The British approached Rani Lakshmibai for refuge but the Rani refused, saying that she could not betray her fellow Indians. The British army was totally uprooted and the nationalist soldiers returned to Delhi.
It was not easy for a woman to be the head of state at that time. Rani Lakshmibai faced many difficulties but she ran the kingdom well. She mastered the martial arts, and inspired Jhansi’s women to join the army and take a more active role in defending the country. The British were determined to take over the kingdom Jhansi. So they objected to the adoption. Lakshmibai wrote a petition to the Governor General, and later sent an envoy to London to plead her case. The British rejected her arguments.
The British, however, were shrewd politicians and highly organized. Their soldiers were better equipped and better trained. They recaptured Delhi on September 2, 1857 with the help of their Indian allies. All but three of the independent states surrendered and their rulers became British puppets. The three exceptions were: The Rani of Jhansi, Tantia Topi and Rao Sahib Peshwa. These three swore that they would jointly fight the British until their last breath.
The British looked down at the Indians, calling them “nigger natives”. They claimed that the white race was superior and that they had the right to enjoy the enviable wealth of India. As India’s economy deteriorated under British rule, Indians became increasingly unhappy. When the Indian soldiers of the Meerut garrison heard the rumor that their rifle cartridges, which they cut with their teeth, were greased with lard and cow
“
‘She fought a man’s war, she was Rani Lakshmibai of Jhanji’ go the lyrics of a song written in her honour. Lakshmibai was a queen of the Princely state of Jhansi. During the ongoing Revolt of 1857, The British government ordered that all princely states that do not have a male heir will be taken over by the government. Queen Lakshmibai was widowed and had an adopted son. But she refused to give her reign. When the troops of the Colonial power arrived to the fort, they found it well defended by the army of Queen Jhansi. She led her troops and fought the battle. It has also been reported that she commanded the largest women’s army till date. When finally she saw that they were losing the battle, she tied her son to her back and started riding away to save her son with colonial army chasing her. Unfortunately her luck had passed and her horse fell and she with it fell over breaking her head. Her words ‘Mein Apni Jhansi nahi Dundi’ (I will not give my Jhansi) have gone down in history for the sheer bravery of this woman who fought a man’s war.

HONOURS YOGA The United Nations General Assembly has declared June 21st as ‘International Day of Yoga’ on December 11. India’s Ambassador to the United Nations Asoke Mukerji proposed this resolution under the agenda of ‘Global Health and Foreign Policy,’ and more than 175 countries have joined supported the resolution in the 193 General Assembly. This comes less than three months after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea. This is also for the first time that such an initiative has been proposed and implemented by any country in the UN body in less than 90 days. Mr. Mukherji took PM Modi’s quotes from his maiden UN Speech. Modi described yoga as an invaluable gift of India’s

tradition during his September visit to the United States. PM Modi also asked world leaders to adopt an international Yoga day, saying that by changing lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. There is also a significance for the date June 21. The date has two solstices, is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world. The UN has listed nearly 118 international days, years and anniversaries for observance in its annual calendar. The main significance of the UN declaring an International Day is to focus the attention of the international community to encourage activities among the member states to commemorate the day.

Cuba’s Raul Castro hails new era of ‘living together’ with U.S Cuban President Raul Castro hailed a landmark exchange of prisoners with the United States on Wednesday and praised U.S. President Barack Obama as the two countries agreed to normalize relations after more than five decades of hostility.
The United States freed three convicted Cuban spies in return for the release of U.S. foreign aid worker Alan Gross, imprisoned in Cuba in 2009, and of an intelligence agent who spied for the United States and had been held for nearly 20 years. “We need to learn to live together in a civilized way, with our differences,” Castro said in televised address that touched off jubilation in the streets of Havana, where the Cuban spies are considered heroes. Castro, known for his low-key style, avoided triumphal statements in his televised address but said their release was a cause of “enormous joy for their families and all of our people.” Two other agents had previously been released upon serving their sentences. Images of the “Cuban Five” cover billboards across the country, and the men are referred to as “anti-terrorist heroes” in official media for their work in spying on extremist Cuban exile groups in Florida. In a rare nod to a sitting U.S. president, Castro praised Obama for agreeing to the prisoner exchange and pushing for a new relationship with Cuba. “This decision by President Obama deserves respect and recognition by our people,” Castro said, speaking at the same time that Obama announced his 12 January/2015
administration would restore diplomatic relations. Castro, 83, became Cuba’s president in 2008, taking over from his older brother Fidel Castro.Since then, he has moved to encourage more private enterprise with modest economic reforms, although he has insisted the changes are aimed at strengthening communist rule. He went to Havana’s international airport on Wednesday to receive the three Cuban intelligence agents released after serving 16 years in U.S. jails. Cuban state television showed footage of the three exchanging hugs with Castro, relatives, friends and government officials. Gerardo Hernandez, 49, the leader of the group, had been serving a double-life sentence for conspiracy to murder in connection with the Cuban air force’s shooting down of U.S. civilian aircraft in 1996. The other two, Antonio Guerrero, 56, and Ramon Labañino, 51, had been due to be released in the coming years. “General, we are still so emotional we don’t have the words, but what we have in excess is gratitude,” Hernandez told Castro, referring to him by his military rank. www.wishesh.com
Dalai Lama says his role should cease after his death The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, has said he thinks his traditional religious role should cease with his death rather than a “stupid” successor replace him and disgrace himself.
He told the BBC in an interview on Wednesday that the Tibetan people should decide whether to continue the spiritual line, which dates back to the 15th century.
talking about Buddhism recently. “This is something very unusual,” he told France24. “A communist, usually, we consider atheist.”
In Tibetan Buddhism, the soul of a senior lama is traditionally believed to be reincarnated in the body of a child on his death. China says the tradition must continue and it must approve the next Dalai Lama.
Asked if the remarks led him to believe Xi was ready to discuss genuine autonomy for Tibet, the spiritual leader said there were “some indications”.
In another interview with France24 television, the Dalai Lama said hardliners in the Chinese government were holding back President Xi Jinping from granting genuine autonomy to Tibet. Beijing accuses the Buddhist leader of being a violent separatist. He denies the charges, saying he only wants real autonomy for Tibet, a remote region ruled by the Communist Party since its troops marched in 1950. “The Dalai Lama institution will cease one day,” he told the BBC. “There is no guarantee that some stupid Dalai Lama won’t come next, who will disgrace himself or herself. That would be very sad. So, much better that a centuries-old tradition should cease at the time of a quite popular Dalai Lama.” The exiled Tibetan, 79, said he expected to live for another 15 or 20 years.
“But at the same time, among the establishment, there is a lot of hardliner thinking still there. So he himself sometimes finds it’s a difficult situation,” he said. Representatives of the Nobel Peace laureate held rounds of talks with China until 2010, but formal dialogue has stalled amid leadership changes in Beijing and a crackdown in Tibet. Many Tibetans feel their intensely Buddhist culture is at risk of annihilation by Beijing’s political and economic domination and a regional influx of majority Han Chinese. China denies these are risks. Asked by France 24 if he might be the last Dalai Lama, as he has suggested in the past, the Buddhist leader said the Tibetan people must decide, not a Communist Party made up of non-believers. “Chinese officials are more concerned about the future Dalai Lama than me,” he added. “I have no concern.”
The Dalai Lama said he took heart from hearing Xi 13 www.wishesh.com

Why Russia’s defence industry can bank on Indian money India has in the past rescued the Russian defence production industry with huge infusion of funds, and can do so in future. It’s no wonder cash-strapped Moscow wants India to quickly stitch up deals worth billions of dollars for helicopters, transport aircraft, and another nuclear submarine.
Russia will take solace from Narendra Modi’s assurance to Vladimir Putin that Russia will remain India’s top defence supplier, although New Delhi may be increasingly sourcing military equipment from the US, Israel and France. An immediate outcome is India’s decision to acquire another Akula-II class nuclear-powered submarine on lease from Russia, much like INS Chakra was inducted in April 2012, on 10-year lease for around $1 billion. India secretly funded most of INS Chakra’s construction after Russia stopped it because of financial problems after Soviet Union broke up in 1991. Russia is now offering another mothballed Akula-II submarine Irbis - which could cost India over $1.5 billion.
(over $2 billion). ndia has been Russia’s st defence customer, biggest defence customer, with imports worth over $40 billion over the years. But India has turned to others, miffed at Russia’s unreliable delivery schedules, cost revisions, technology transfer hurdles and shoddy spares support. The US has bagged Indian defence deals worth $10 billion since 2007-2008, dislodging Russia for the topmost position in the last three years. But only Russia helps India in strategic projects, from providing nuclear submarines to helping India build its own.
Russia wants early inking of the final R&D contract for the joint fifth-generation fighter (FGFA) project, in which India will invest $5.5 billion to develop a stealth fighter. India will spend around $25 billion on 127 such fighters, to be built domestically, in the FGFA project. “Russian shipyards and aerospace industry would’ve floundered had India not placed mega orders in the past,” an official said. These include refit of aircraft carrier Admi refit of aircraft carrier Admi ral Gorshkov or INS Vikra maditya ($2.33 billion), six Talwar-class stealth frigates (almost $2 billion), 272 almost $2 billion), 272 Sukhois (project cost over $12 billion), 45 MiG-29Ks ($2 billion), 139 Mi-17 V5s helicopters January/2015

Government not ready for Narendra Modi’s statement in RS With stalemate in Rajya Sabha continuing over the Opposition’s demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation and reply in a debate on religious conversions, the government has decided not to give in to any pressure even as parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu appealed for smooth conduct of House to allow passage of crucial bills.
While the government will try its best to pass the insurance bill and other pending legislations within the four days left for the winter session, it has decided against a reply by the PM in Rajya Sabha. “There is no guarantee that the Opposition will allow the House to run even after he replies to the debate, as he has done it once in both Houses already and yet the House was disrupted,” said a senior minister. Instead, the government has decided to “exhaust the Opposition”, which it feels will expose to the people how they have been stalling important legislative business. “The government is not responsible for the present stalemate,” Naidu said as he addressed a press conference on Wednesday afternoon along with telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and minister of state for parliamentary affairs M A Naqvi. The government is also wary of the Opposition cross-questioning the PM during a debate or a reply in the House, which would become counterproductive given his dignity and stature, feel BJP’s floor managers. Modi himself is learnt to have told ministers in-charge of running the House on Wednesday morning that the government has been doing a good job of running Parliament and that “it (government) has done no www.wishesh.com
wrong”, so there is no need for worry about any wrong message going out if the Opposition stalls the House. Thursday is the Prime Minister’s scheduled day for the Upper House and he is likely to be present if the House runs smoothly. According to sources, the government is banking on Modi’s popularity and his ability to connect with the people to communicate its intent. That, it feels, is the best counter to the allegations being raised by the Opposition parties, which are trying to prove that the BJP-led government is all about “regressive” moves rather than being one that will take the agenda of governance and development forward. Modi has asked his ministers to be aware of all that is happening around them and remain updated on information to counter the Opposition charges. The eight parties that have joined ranks to disrupt the House are Congress, TMC, JD(U), SP, BSP, CPM, CPI and DMK. Condemning the “demeaning” and “shameful” comments by a Congress MP in Rajya Sabha against the PM, BJP on Wednesday demanded Sonia Gandhi’s reaction and said the opposition party was in “political uncertainty” after its defeat in the elections. 15

hich was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur (anglicized as Tanjore) and spread across the adjoining and geographically contiguous Tamil country. The art form draws its immediate resources and inspiration from way back about 1600 AD, a period when the Nayakas of Thanjavur under the suzerainty of the Vijayanagara Rayas encouraged art—chiefly, classical dance and music—as well as literature, both in Telugu and Tamil and painting of chiefly Hindu religious subjects in temples. However, it can safely be surmised that Thanjavur painting, as we know it now, originated in the Maratha court of Thanjavur (1676 - 1855).

FINE ART
T
hanjavur paintings are characterised by rich, flat and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. In Thanjavur paintings one can see the influence of Deccani, Vijayanagar, Maratha and even European or Company styles of painting. Essentially serving as devotional icons, the subjects of most paintings are Hindu gods, goddesses, and saints. Episodes from Hindu Puranas, Sthalapuranas and other religious texts were visualised, sketched or traced and painted with the main figure or figures placed in the central section of the picture (mostly within an architecturally delineated space such as a mantapa or prabhavali) surrounded by several subsidiary figures, themes and subjects. There are also many instances when Jain, Sikh, Muslim, other religious and even secular subjects were depicted in Tanjore paintings. January/2015

Thanjavur paintings are panel paintings done on wooden planks, and hence referred to as palagai padam (palagai = “wooden plank”; padam = “picture”) in local parlance. In modern times, these paintings have become souvenirs for festive occasions in South India - colourful pieces of art to decorate walls, and collectors’ items for art lovers, as also sadly sometimes, dime-a-dozen bric-abracs to be purchased from street corner practitioners. Thanjavur has a unique place in the history of Indian painting, in that it houses the 11th century Chola wall paintings in the Brihadeeswarar temple (Periya koyil or Pervudaiyar koyil in Tamil) as also paintings from the Nayak period (many times superimposed on the earlier Chola paintings) dating to the 16th century. The fall of the Vijayanagar Empire and the sack of Hampi in the Battle of Talikota in 1565 CE resulted in the migration of painters who had been dependent on the patronage of the empire. Some of them migrated to Thanjavur and worked under the patronage of the Thanjavur Nayakas. Subsequently, the Maratha rulers who defeated the Thanjavur Nayakas began to nurture the Thanjavur atelier. Needless to say, the artists absorbed the local influences and the individual tastes of their Maratha patrons which helped evolve the unique Thanjavur style of painting. The Thanjavur artists in addition to decorating temples also began painting and decorating the major buildings, palaces, chatrams and residences of the Maratha kings and nobility. Thanjavur paintings were made in various sizes depending upon the function, the subject and the choice of the patron. Large paintings of deities and the Maratha rulers, their courtiers and nobility, www.wishesh.com
were painted and installed to serve as architectural accents in the Maratha palaces and buildings. To quote Dallapiccola - ‘ The works, executed on canvas pasted on a wooden support, were framed - a major departure from the pan-Indian tradition, in which paintings are of small size - and designed to be hung on the walls of domestic puja rooms or in bhajan halls. The themes, as in painted albums, (made for European patrons) were usually gods and godesses, holy places, religious personalities and occasionally portraits. Their dazzling palette consisted generally of vivid reds, deep greens, chalk white, turquoise blues and the lavish use of gold (foil) and inset glass beads. Sometimes precious stones were also used in the paintings. The large format of the majority of such works and the relatively simple composition are the hallmark of the style. This school was greatly inspired by European techniques and was the most popular in Tamil Nadu until the early twentieth century.’ Paintings in addition to being done on canvas, were also done on walls, wooden panel, glass, paper, mica and exotic media such as ivory. Small Ivory portraits were typically worn as cameo pendants called rajaharam and were quite popular.

SIGNFICANCE OF
INDIAN ARCHITECTURE One of the most enduring achievements of Indian civilization is undoubtedly its architecture. Indian architecture, which has evolved through centuries, is the result of socio-economic and geographical conditions. Different types of Indian architectural styles include a mass of expressions over space and time, transformed by the forces of history considered unique to India.
I
ndian architecture, belonging to different periods of history, bears the stamp of respective periods. Though the cities of Indus Valley provide substantial evidence of extensive town planning, the beginnings of Indian architecture can be traced back to the advent of Buddhism in India. It was in this period that a large number of magnificent buildings came up. Some of the highlights of Buddhist art and architecture are the Great Stupa at Sanchi and the rock-cut caves at Ajanta. With the establishment of Hindu kingdoms in South India, the south Indian school of architecture began to flourish. The most notable achievements of the Pallava rulers were the rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram and the temples of Kanchipuram. The Chola, Hoyasala and Vijayanagar rulers also did remarkable job in the field of architecture. The temples at Thanjavur, Belur and Halebid bear testimony to the architectural excellence of the South Indian rulers. In north India, there developed a new a different style of architecture. This was called as the Nagara style architecture. In central India, the Chandela rulers built a magnificent temple complex at Khajuraho. With the coming of the Muslim rulers, there developed a new architectural style in India- the Indo-Islamic architecture. The Indo-Islamic style was neither strictly Islamic nor strictly Hindu. The architecture of the medieval period can be divided into two main categories. They are the Delhi or the Imperial Style and the Mughal Architecture.

The development of Muslim Style of Architecture of this period can be called the Indo-Islamic Architecture or the Indian Architecture influenced by Islamic Art. The Indo-Islamic style was neither strictly Islamic nor strictly Hindu.
ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE Indian architecture is as old as the history of the civilization. The earliest remains of recognizable building activity in the India dates back to the Indus Valley cities. Among India’s ancient architectural remains, the most characteristic are the temples, Chaityas, Viharas, Stupas and other religious structures.

Initially the caves were excavated in the western India. Some examples of this type of cave structure are Chaityas and Viharas of Buddhists.
ROCK CUT The Rock-cut structures present the most spectacular piece of ancient Indian art specimen. Most of the rock-cut structures were related to various religious communities. TAJ MAHAL FACTS & HISTORY • The symbol of love, the Taj Mahal was built in the year 1653. • In 1983, the Taj Mahal was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. • Around 20,000 people were hired for the construction of the Taj Mahal. • It took 22 years to complete the monument. • The Taj Mahal was built in a huge Mughal Garden of 17 ha area, set on the right bank of the Yamuna River. • Under the Falcon City of Wonders Project in Dubai, a replica of the Taj Mahal, named as the Taj Arabia will be built. This super luxury hotel is expected to have 400 opulent rooms. The Falcon City will create some residential and commercial complexes adjoining the hotel. • The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra is called Baby Taj. • A replica of the Taj Mahal has been constructed in Bangladesh, India. 38 January/2015 www.wishesh.com
T
he main building was completed in 1648, however, the surrounding architectural forms took five years for completion. The complex includes gardens, fountains, and a reflecting pool, which reflects the image of the Taj Mahal. The white-colored tomb rests on a square plinth and comprises of a symmetrical building with an arch-shaped doorway crowned by a large dome and finial. The original finial was constructed of gold, but it was replicated by a bronze model in the early 19th century. The top of the tomb is embellished with a lotus design, mixing the Persian and the Indian architectural styles. The recherché inlay work and elaborate craftsmanship together with the calligraphy leaves one utterly fascinated. For the interior inlay work, Shah Jahan preferred to use precious and semi-precious stones. Four minarets, each more than 40 meters tall, recall the traditional component of the mosques. The minarets were constructed somewhat outside the plinth to avoid damage that may occur if any minaret falls. Passages from the Quran can be seen bedecking the walls of the entire complex. These passages refer to the day of judgement. Over the centuries, the monument of love has been experiencing neglect and is deteriorating. During the early 20th century, a major restoration of this wonder took place. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is now in danger due to excessive pollution. The restoration works undertaken by the government are slow. After a tour of the Taj Mahal, visitors feel hungry. There are many eating joints near the Taj Mahal. Some of the food joints include the Silk Route Restaurant, Zorba The Buddha, Olive Garden, and Capri Restaurant. TAJ MAHAL TICKET
BEST TIME TO VISIT TAJ MAHAL
Different rates are applicable for entry in the Taj Mahal. For foreign tourists, the ticket costs Rs. 750, the citizens of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) and BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries have to pay Rs. 510, while Indians have to pay Rs. 20. Children below 15 years are allowed free entry in case of both the foreign and domestic tourists.
Many recommend visiting the Taj Mahal around sunrise, before the arrival of huge crowds on the train from Delhi, allowing for better photos. Sunrise and sunset also showcase the Taj, often casting soft light and lovely colors onto the monument and the reflecting pool. Around the time of a full moon, it is sometimes open at night, though the Night View is limited, and visitors must stay at the red sandstone plaza. The months of October through January are usually the best months for visiting the Taj Mahal as they are cooler.
TICKET OUTLETS • Ticket booths at the Western Gate (near Saheli Burj) and Shilpgram (750 meters from Eastern Gate) sell tickets from sunrise to sunset. • The Southern Gate ticket booth is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. 39 www.wishesh.com

TOP 10 SUPER FOODS FOR EYES Carrots contain a lot of betacarotene, which is a precursor for vitamin A. Vitamin A prevents night blindness, helps maintain a healthy and clear cornea, and protects the cells in your eyes and throughout your body.
Experts recommend having two servings of salmon a week. Salmon can be consumed in soup, salad or as the main dish. Other cold-water fish that help maintain eye health are sardines, herring, mackerel and tuna.
Carrots also contain lutein, which helps increase pigment density in the macula, the oval-shaped yellow spot near the center of the retina. This in turn protects the retina and lowers the risk of macular degeneration. Carrots are also rich in fiber and potassium.
January/2015
You can eat carrots as a snack or you can make soups, salads or side dishes.

1. SPINACH
Spinach contains a lot of nutrients including vitamin A, lutein and zeaxanthin that are good for the eyes. Vitamin A helps protect the cornea, lutein protects the eyes from ultraviolet light and zeaxanthin contributes to visual development. For maximum benefits, drink a glass of fresh spinach juice on an empty stomach in the morning. You can also enjoy spinach as a side dish, in salads or sautĂŠed.
Blueberries support healthy eye functioning through their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, collagen-stabilizing, vasoprotective and rhodopsin-regenerating properties.
4. BLUEBERRIES
Eating salmon regularly can help protect the retina from damage and prevent blindness. Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps prevent dry eyes. The omega-3 fatty acids also help ward off agerelated macular degeneration.
3. CARROTS
2. SALMON
Yoga has both preventative and therapeutic benefits. It has been shown to offer both physical and mental benefits to the body and the mind.
To improve your eyesight, you must regularly eat spinach along with other green vegetables, such as kale, Swiss chard, turnips, mustard leaves and collard greens.
Eating blueberries regularly improves vision and strengthens blood vessels in the back of the eyes. Blueberries also contain anthocyanins, which help lower both high blood pressure and inflammation and also prevent blockages in the arteries that feed oxygen to the retina. Along with blueberries, you must also eat blackberries, mulberries, cranberries and bilberries.

You can eat avocado as is or add it to salads, dips, soups or sandwiches.
To include peppers in your diet, you can grill, stuff, steam, bake and stir-fry them. You can also eat them raw as a snack or part of a healthy salad plate.
Broccoli contains a good amount of vitamin B2. A deficiency of vitamin B2 can make the eyes highly sensitive to light, which can cause inflammation, blurred vision and ocular fatigue. Vitamin B2 also plays a role in preventing cataracts or delaying their progress.
Avocados are also great for your eyes. They contain lutein that helps prevent macular degeneration, cataracts and other age-related eye diseases. They also contain beta-carotene and vitamins B6, C, and E that are essential to enjoy good eyesight and to protect the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision.
At the same time, peppers are also rich in vitamin B6, lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and lycopene. All these nutrients are essential for maintaining the overall health of the eyes.
Broccoli also contains powerful phytochemical antioxidants, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, and vitamin A that are essential for healthy eyesight. For maximum nutritional benefits, eat the tender broccoli heads raw rather than cooked. They go well in many types of salads and can be enjoyed as a healthy snack with some veggie dip.
7. WALNUTS
Peppers are one of the richest sources of vitamins A and C. While vitamin A helps preserve eyesight, vitamin C protects the eyes against cataracts.
10. STRAWBERRIES
Sweet potatoes come in about 400 different varieties throughout the year and can be cooked in wide variety of ways such as baked, grilled, fried or boiled.
For the overall health of your eyes, you must regularly eat a variety of peppers including green, red, yellow, orange, and even purple, brown and black.
6. PEPPERS
5. SWEET POTATO
Sweet potatoes contain a good amount of vitamin A, an essential nutrient for the eyes. Vitamin A improves eyesight and also prevents cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Vitamin A is also required to solve the problem of dry eyes and protect the eyes from both bacterial and viral infections. Sweet potatoes are also rich in betacarotene, potassium and fiber.
Walnuts contain a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids that play an important role in maintaining overall eye health. Also, walnuts contain antioxidants, zinc and vitamin E, which work to combat inflammation and preserve cardiovascular health. Along with walnuts, you can also eat other types of nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, pecans and peanuts. Eating a handful of walnuts daily can greatly improve the health of your eyes and protect them from many different kinds of vision problems.
Strawberries contain a good amount of vitamin C, an antioxidant that the body requires to maintain healthy eyes and keep them free from inflammatory diseases. The different antioxidants present in strawberries can help ward off eye problems like dryness of the eyes, macular degeneration and vision defects. Three or more servings of strawberries daily can decrease the possibility of age-related eye issues. You can eat strawberries as a great snack, add them to a bowl of cereal or a fruit salad, or in fruity desserts for a healthy sweet treat.
To conclude, all the above superfoods can help maintain the overall health of your eyes. So, try to eat more of these superfoods and give your eyes the nutritional support they need to be at their best!

The river Cauvery forms a garland around Talakadu as it flows from Thirumukkoodal and Sivasamudram. The place was also known as Gajaaranyam (Gaja-elephant ; aaranyam-forest) because of the elephants that roamed the forests here. Another interesting legend is that Somadatta, from sage Vasishta’s lineage (vamsam) did penance here along with thousands of his disciples in the

form of elephants and hence the place came to be known as Gajaaranyam - Somadutta, with his disciples performed penance at Kasi wishing for moksham. Lord Siva gave him darshan and asked him to reach Rushiga rishis’ hermitage at Talakaadu. The rishi and his disciples were however killed on the way by elephants. Since they were calling out “Elephants” as they were dying, they reincarnated as elephants. They continued to worship Lord Siva as elephants and attained moksham.

The idols of the two hunters Tala & Kaada can be seen in the Veerabadra Swamy temple adjacent to the Vaidyanatha temple. Talakad was once a temple region with over 30 temples, but these are buried under sand dunes now. ROUNDUP
VIRAT KOHLI Virat Kohli played a captain knock and took his side to a remarkable victory against Sri Lanka in the fifth and final ODI played at Ranchi. This win marked India’s first ever whitewash against Sri Lanka and the win is an advantage for the side who will be flying to Australia tour shortly.
“
It was Angelo Mathews who won the toss and the visitors batted first. Yet again the opening pair of SL failed as Indian bowlers removed them too early in the first over. Though Dilshan and Jayawardene gave decent start, they could carry the score forward. Captain Mathews chipped in at the crucial juncture, where Sri Lanka need one big innings from one of their batsman. Along with Thirimanne, Mathews kept the scoreboard ticking. Mathews completed his maiden century and Thirimanne scored a half. Sri Lanka posted a total of 286 while Mathews remained unbeaten at 139.
ANGELO MATHEWS WAS REWARDED WITH ‘MAN OF THE MATCH’ AWARD FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION WITH BOTH BAT AND BOWL WHILE VIRAT KOHLI HAS BEEN NAMED ‘PLAYER OF THE SERIES.’

In reply, Indian opening pair failed for the first time in the series. Again it was Angelo Mathews but this time it was with bowl, who removed Rahane and Rohit in quick succession. Then came Rayudu and Kohli who put on a hundred plus. Rayudu completed his half century and was looking for the triple figure. But tough luck, as he got himself run out in the mix up with Kohli.
Then no other Indian batsmen could stand in crease and wickets were falling at one end. Kohli did not lose the hope of chasing the total and completed his 21st century. At last India won the match with eight balls remaining and Kohli remained unbeaten too. 58

ROHIT SHARMA
ROHIT SHARMA
India’s Rohit Sharma has created history at Eden Gardens by scoring a doubling hundred and become the first batsmen to score two double centuries in ODIs.
Captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first. Though India made a quick start, two wickets with short gap of Rahane and Rayudu, put the hosts in back foot
However, Rohit and Kohli continued to tick the score and it was the third PowerPlay option that changed the entire course of the game. Rohit and Kohli started attacking Sri Lanka bowlers. Rohit Sharma has completed his century and was racing towards double ton while Kohli completed his half century. There was no stopping Rohit Sharma, who was blasting Sri Lankan bowlers all around the ground. In 44th over, Rohit reach the 200 mark and in the 48th over, he completed 250. At 264 score, Rohit was dismissed for the last ball of the Indian innings and the total score was 404. India is also the only country to post 400 plus scores for five team.
In reply, Sri Lanka never looked in the game. Four top order batsmen were removed in the first ten over and it was just matter of time for Sri Lanka batsmen to finish their innings. SL captain Angelo Mathews, Thirimanne were the only batsmen who faced Indian bowlers and scored half centuries.
WITH THIS WIN, INDIA ARE 4-0 AND ARE LOOKING FOR A WHITEWASH. www.wishesh.com

STORY Lingaa is about Sri Raja Lingeshwar, the King of Gadwal dynasty who fought with the British during their rule to construct a dam in Singanoor. Due to some situations, Raja walks out of the village after completing the construction. The villagers comes to know about some shocking truths about Raja Lingeshwara and the rest of the movie is how his grandson solves all the problems in Singanoor and re opens the closed temple.
ANALYSIS Lingaa movie starts with an interesting narration and gripping screenplay which continues its pace. The first half has lot of entertainment with funny one liners which bring hilarious laughs. The songs have been the barriers for the film which test our patience. On the whole the first half has everything except some good music. The second half of the movie has been slow in terms of entertainment but the emotional scenes have been showcased well along with the story. The songs once again fail to bring out the feel in the film. The movie has been maintained well until the pre climax and the movie dips down in the climax badly. The graphics have not been realistic and the second half of the film ends OK.
PERFORMANCE Rajinikanth has been superb as usual and his fans will have a treat with Lingaa once again. His screen presence has been stunning and he tried to manage himself with the things he has been excelled in. Anushka has done a regular role in which she has been seen and she was beautiful and performed good as usual. Sonakshi Sinha has done a challenging role in which she has done an excellent job. Santhanam has been hilarious and K Vishwanath has been apt. All others performed well. The story of the movie has been good enough and the screenplay has been taken good care. The diolagues have been apt for the movie. The songs of the movie have been below the average and so is the background score. The photography has been one of the highlight of the movie. The production values have been grand enough and KS Ravikumar has succeeded in showcasing Rajinikanth in a film with all the elements. However except small mistakes, the director has done a decent job.
FINAL WORD Lingaa a treat natural Lingaa

is undoubtedly Rajinikanth’s movie and it’s for his fans. Except the songs and un graphics, the movie has been entertaining. is sure a worth watching film.

WHATEVER YOUR AGE, YOGA CAN ENHANCE YOUR LIFESTYLE...
“
YOGA BENEFITS AS AN EXERCISE A near-perfect fitness routine, hatha yoga provides the means for people of any age not only to get and stay in shape but also to develop balance, coordination, and a sense of centeredness. It renews, invigorates, and heals the body - stretching and toning the muscles, joints, and spine and directing blood and oxygen to the internal organs (including the glands and nerves). Yoga is distinctly different from other kinds of exercise. It generates motion without causing strain and imbalances in the body. When practiced correctly, hatha yoga has no such negative effects on either the inner or outer body. When done with dedication and purpose, hatha yoga can be a quite demanding, yet an immensely rewarding type of exercise. While not inherently aerobic, it involves almost every muscle in the body and challenges the body to work in a different and often more passive way. Since the limbs function as free weights, resistance is created by moving the body’s center of gravity. This strengthening gives way to endurance as poses are held for longer periods of time. Unlike conventional forms of exercise, such as weight training, walking, biking or hiking, hatha yoga stresses quality of movement over quantity. A consistent hatha yoga practice can quiet the mind and refresh the body, bringing health, relaxation, and happiness. www.wishesh.com

Although some asanas have to be modified during pregnancy, their essence is perfectly suited to this time of expanded self-awareness. Pregnancy is also a very good time for meditation.

Older people often find that gentle yoga exercises allow them to retain mobility and may relieve problems such as arthritis and poor circulation.
YOGA BENEFITS AND SPORTS
By their very nature, asanas affect major and minor muscle groups and organs as they simultaneously import strength, increase flexibility and bring nourishment to internal organs. Although most poses are not aerobic in nature, they do in fact send oxygen to the cells in the body by way of conscious deep breathing and sustained stretching and contraction of different muscle groups.
Whatever sport you choose to practice, yoga can enhance and complement your ability. Most sports build muscular strength and stamina, often in specific areas of the body. Yoga can help to check any imbalance in muscular development and will enable both your body and your mind to function more efficiently. www.wishesh.com

SPIRITUAL
DASAVATARAMS OF LORD VISHNU MATSYAVATARAM
Lord Vishnu being the protector of the Universe, comes down to the earth in some form or other to protect and save his devotees. The Lord says, that whenver there is an over abundance of evil on earth, He will take an avataram to restore the balance. In every one of his avatarams he conveys a valuable message. An asura, that is some form of evil is destroyed, restoring peace.
Mahavishnu took the form of a fish to retrieve the vedas from the Asura Hayagreevan (head of a horse) and also to safeguard herbs and seeds at the end of one cycle of creation. Brahma at the end of his day’s work of creation, was resting in Brahmalogam. An asura called Hayagreevan stole the vedas from Brahma and disappeared in the ocean. Without the vedas, Brahma could not continue with his duty of creation and hence Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish to retrieve the vedas.
NARASIMHAVATARAM
VARAHAVATARAM As Brahma was in Dyaanam (meditation), a varaha ( wild boar) the size of his thumb came forth from his nostrils. Very soon, this varaham grew to be larger than an elephant. It was Lord Vishnu in his Varaha Avataram and he traveled to the depths of the ocean and reached paadaala Logam. There he found the earth and lifted it by his long front teeth. January/2015
Hiranyakasibu decides to kill his own loving son, Prahaladha, who turned out to be a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Prahaladha says that Lord Vishnu exists in every particle - from the minute dust to the huge pillar in the palace. On hearing this, Hiranyakasibu hit hard on the pillar with his gada, breaking it in two. Seated within was Lord Narasimha (Mahavishnu). Narasimhar took Hiranyakasibu to the front step and tore him apart with his sharp claws. 66
KURMAVATARAM Maha Vishnu in the form of a tortoise. Lord Vishnu took the Kurmavataram to provide the Devas with Amirtham, which will give them everlasting life and bliss. He also took the form of a beautiful Mohini in the course of distributing the amirtham between the Devas and the Asuras. www.wishesh.com
PARASURAMAVATARAM Parasurama avataram was to convey to the world, that one must always respect one’s parents words. Parasurama chopped off his mother’s head to do his duty to his father. Rishi Jamadkni was overjoyed by his obedience and was willing to grant him any boon. Parasuraman asked for the life of his mother and brothers and also that they have no memory of the happenings. Jamadakni rishi granted him his wishes.
VAMANAVATARAM In order to fight with Bali, the powerful asura king who was the great grandson of Hiranyakasibu, Maha Vishnu took the guise of a Brahmin boy. Lord Vishnu in his Vamanavataram begged for just three feet of land Vamana began to grow to a great height and with one step he covered the whole earth, with his second step he covered the entire sky and region above. Lord Vishnu had thus regained the power from the asura king.
RAMAVATARAM Maha Vishnu in the form of Lord Rama, the ideal human being. We all know Ramayan. Ravana kidnaps Sita, wife of Rama. How Rama fights with Ravana and gets back Sita.
KRISHNAVATARAM Krishna is the eight son of Devaki. The day that Krishna killed Naragasuran is celebrated as Deepavali. Krishna also plays a crucial role Mahabharatam. He helps Pandavas to defeat Kauravas. Geethopadesam to Arjuna by Lord Krishna is truly a way of living to be followed by all human beings.

BALARAMAVATARAM
KALKIAVATARAM
Balram is Rohini’s elder son. Balram though fights with Lord Sri Krishna, he was always there to protect him. Balarama and his wife Revathy had a daughter called Vatsala Lord Krishna marries Vatsala with Abhimanyu, son of Krishna’s sister Subadra.
As soon as Lord Krishna left for Vaikuntham, Kali had entered our world. People will tend to follow all adharma paths and act selfish and greedy. Kalki avataram by Lord Vishnu on a white horse is to restore balance in the Kali yuga.

You focus on money as many planets are in your financial zone. Making more money because you work more seems logical. Some Libras may develop a side business or consulting business. Or if you have an independent practice, you have more clients than before. Your daily routine at work is completely scattered and you run after time. You need to stop one day and get organized to rebound. Your parents are supporting you for a big project, going back to school or buying a car or moving in a new place. You have a misunderstanding or jealousy from a brother

CAPRICORN Mars is in Capricorn with Pluto all month of November. This gives you a high level of energy. You will accomplish so much during this month that you will be amazed at yourself. You are really excited by meeting a new person if you are single, as the character is interesting, the look corresponds to what you like, and the interests are mutual. What is better to start a relationship? If you are in a long term one, you are really busy doing things together, cooking, exercise, walks, painting the kitchen, staying active all the time.
PISCES Life presents us with different types of ‘curves’. There are ‘curve balls’, situations that often appear suddenly and cause us to reassess our positions. Then, there are things called ‘learning curves’ that are intended to be helpful and enlightening but have a tendency to cause us to react negatively. Sometimes, we react to both inappropriately because we draw upon past experiences and results in the belief we’re about to encounter similar. This month, you set a new precedent. Although a situation appears familiar and worthy of caution or suspicion, what you’ve learned previously can be applied in a way that ensures you bring about a new and much more pleasing result.
Where do you ‘fit’ in? Why do you feel a need to give such thought to how or where you ‘fit’ in? Society has always been about ‘conforming and that doesn’t look set to change in the near future. So many people adhere to rules set by unseen councils who believe themselves worthy of dictating terms surrounding what is required from anyone before they can ‘fit in’ or be accepted. During November, it will become increasingly clearer how much credibility you do have already and what it is you can offer in ways you might believe – through convincing yourself or being told by certain others – you can’t. Expect during coming weeks to gain much deserved respect. www.wishesh.com
You are feeling tired and stressed until the 23rdof November. You may need to go to bed early, eat healthy, take vitamins and exercise at it helps you regulate your energies. You pushed yourself too hard in October, so now you pay the price. It is ok to stay home sometimes and clean and sort papers out. You are surrounded by a mess that makes you tired emotionally. Have an eye on your bank statements you may not realize that you spent too much lately. Love is fantastic by the 17th, Venus enters in your sign and you are the happiest person on earth.
