Firstly, the silk/ cotton yarn will be involved in the dyeing process. In this process, the yarn would be dipped in the boiled colour water in a high temperature. Higher the temperature, higher would be the durability of the colour. Every weaver works from home. Silk/cotton and Zari are the core materials used for manufacturing the saree. Dharmavaram Sarees are traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique. marriage The Kashmiri Pandits are the Brahmin

community from the Kashmir Valley, a mountainous region in the Jammu and Kashmir. At present, they are the only Hindu community native to Kashmir. 16

While it comes to the discussion of Kashmiri marriages, one would not wish to come out of it. Can’t believe? Let us experience the feeling, through discussing about the process of marriage in Kashmiri Pandits.

Kashmiri Pandits marriages Firstly, Kashmiris are very much concerned about the horoscopes of both the bride and groom. Along with it, even background, status and moral character of the family of the prospective match and their close relatives, are concerned before the marriage. If all the above mentioned are positive, then the bride’s parents would propose a wedding date and if even WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015

groom’s parents agree to it, the priest fixes the wedding date. Pre-wedding procedure

Formal Engagement or Kasamdry After the two families are committed to marry the couple, the priests fix the date of the engagement ceremony as per the Kashmiri calendar. The ceremony takes place, putting an idol in front. The either side elders meet in a temple and exchange flowers as a sign of celebration. The bride’s family lays out a meal. In both bride and the groom’s houses, the eldest aunt prepares ‘var’ (a special rice pudding), and distributed

among the neighbor and relatives. The bride’s family sends cash, fruits, dry fruits and a pot containing nabad (misri, sugar lumps) to the groom’s house. But in the present days, the couple meets in a temple and exchange the gold rings.

Livun

Livun is the traditional cleansing of the house before a wedding. Both the bride and groom’s family do not necessarily do the Livun on the same day. On this day, the floors of the Kashmiri mud houses are cleaned and treated with a mixture of mud and water. All the married female members of the family attend

Tradition

The traditional wedding attire for Kshmirir pandits is Pheran. The groom wears a tweed pheran with a sword in his waistband and jootis in his feet. 18

A week prior to the wedding, the maenziraat ceremony will be held. It begins with krool khaarun, a ceremony which involves door decorating by their respective aunts (father’s sister). In the evening, the bride-to-be follows an elaborate bathing ritual, WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015

the ceremony. The bua or pof (father’s sister) of the bride and groom prepare var and distributes everyone. They are given cash by the respective parents of the bride and the groom as a token of love. This is also the day when the waza (family cook) arrives and puts together a mud-and-brick oven called wuri in the backyard of the house. This is where the traditional meals will be cooked for the wedding ceremonies.

Wanvun A sangeet session would be conducted in both bride and groom’s houses. The guests are served a salted pink tea (called noon or sheer chai), at the end of the sangeet sessions.

Maenziraat A week prior to the wedding, the maenziraat ceremony will be held. It begins with krool khaarun, a ceremony which involves door decorating by their respective aunts (father’s sister). In the evening, the bride-to-be follows an elaborate bathing ritual, during which her feet are washed by her maternal aunt. After the bath, her eldest aunt decorates her hands and feet with maenz (henna). Thread Ceremony (yagneopavit) The Janayu or thread ceremony will be conducted for the groom, a few days before the wedding, if at all it was not conducted before.

Divagone The divagone will witness the transition of the bride and the groom from brahmacharya ashram to grihastha ashram. The bride and the groom worship God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The ceremony is observed separately by the girl’s family and the boy’s family in their respective homes.

The Wedding attires The traditional wedding attire for Kshmirir pandits is Pheran. The groom wears a tweed pheran with a sword in his waistband and jootis in his feet. His headgear has a turban (gordastar), to which a peacock feather will be tied with a golden thread. The bride’s pheran is usually made of raffle, with ari or hook embroidery at the neck, cuff and edges. Over the kalpush, a long piece of starched and ironed snowwhite cloth. A white scarf (called zoojh) will be wrapped over the kalpush, which covers 50% head from behind. The scarf is left hanging on the back of the head, over the braid, till it reaches, just below the shoulders.

Ceremony at the groom’s house While the groom’s turban is being tied, a plate of rice containing some money (zung) is touched to his right shoulder. Before marriage procession leaves for the bride’s house, the groom must stand on a vyoog (rangoli, a decorative pattern made of rice flour and colours). Groom is given nabad to eat, to announce his departure, a conch shell is sounded. Two rice pots containing money, are given away to the poor, as a good will gesture. The groom and his party (baraat) leave for the bride’s house in car. DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Nihang

The Nihang are the popular armed Sikh order.

Nihang is even expected to take its origin from a Persian word, meaning a mythical sea creature. The term owes its origin to Mughal historians, who compared the Akali’s ferocity with the crocodiles. In Raag Aasa, Guru Arjan dev Ji has described ‘Nihang’ as those, who lives with no fear.

Nihang’s attire Nihang’s traditional dress is called Shiva Swarupa, meaning “Shiva’s appearance”. It comprises of superelectric blue in full attire, iron bracelets, round the wrists called Jangi Kara and quoits of steel called ‘Chakram’, blue turbans on WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015

Culture Armour consists of an iron chainmail worn under an iron breastplate, called Char aina. Nihang war-shoes called Jangi Mojeh were constructed of iron at the toe, making their pointed toes capable of inflicting cuts and stab wounds.

High turbans are popular identification of Nihang The immediate identification of a Nihang is their high turbans called as ‘Dastar Bunga’ and also their extensive use of the chakram or war-quoit. Nihang turbans were often pointed at the top and outfitted with a trident. At other times, they would be armed with an iron claw and one or several chakram to slice at an opponent’s eyes. These steelreinforced turbans are believed to protect and erase the need of a headgear. Even in the present days, Nihang still wear miniature versions of the five weapons called Pancha shastra in their turbans. Those five weapons are named as Chakram, Khanda, Karud, Kirpan and the Tir. In today’s world, Nihang are accorded great respect and affection by all Sikh community sections, but their Hindu-influenced beliefs and unorthodox practices (such as meat and alcohol consumption) are seen as blasphemous and heretical by some. Yudhishtira, the eldest brother of the Pandavas, has once organized a yagnam called Rajasuya yagna in their capital city of Indraprastha. The rituals are all over and then, Yudhishtra wanted to give the offerings made for the yagna to Krishna.

STORY FOR KIDS

26

The king of Chedi, Shishupala was witnessing all this. He was seethed with anger and got up from his seat shouting at Krishna with displeasure. Shishupala was not happy as a mere cowherd is being honored first. He began to call Krishna with names and was using a verbal duel. Krishna kept listening to all these patiently. But at a point of time, Krishna lost his cool and killed Shishupala with his Sudrashan chakra. The weapon slashed Sishupala’s head.

Background behind the death of Shishupala The death of Shishupala has an interesting background. The background is related to one of Krishna’s friend and his charioteer, Udhava, who asked about the Shishupala’s end. Shishupala is also Krishna’s cousin. Shishupala was born with four arms and three eyes. A heavenly voice came at the time of his birth. The voice said that his arms and extra eye will disappear, when someone makes him sit on their lap. The voice also said that same person will also see the end of Shishupala. Meanwhile, Shishupala began to grow. WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015

One day, Krishna went to his aunt Satyavathi, when Shishupala was an infant. Talking to Krishna Satyavathi said, “Oh Krishna, Shishupala is handsome just like you.” Listening to this, Krishna took the baby from the cradle and put the baby on his lap. Right then Shishupala’s extra arms and eye left the body. Krishna was surprised to see this. But Satyavathi was unhappy. She told Krishna that a heavenly voice said that Shishupala will die in the hands of that person, who makes Shishupala sit on his lap and when his extra arms and eye disappear. Satyavathi took a promise from Krishna that he will excuse Shishupala hundred times before he kills. Krishna gave her this promise. She also said that her son should go to heaven after he dies. Krishna told Udhava that he excused hundred times before killing Shishupala. The Sisupala story shows a discrete way in which divinity keeps count of one’s atrocities, and pays back when the line has been crossed.

Another story related to Shishupala’s end Another story related to Shishupala’s end is that of curse of brothers Jaya and Vijaya. Brothers Jaya and Vijaya were the guards

to the heavenly gate. Due to a curse, both of them were born on earth as lord Vishnu’s enemies. According to the Puranas, they were born in the Dwapara yuga as Thanthavakra and Shishupala. Krishna killed both of them.

‘‘ Satyavathi took a promise from Krishna that he will excuse Shishupala hundred times before he kills. Krishna gave her this promise. She also said that her son should go to heaven after he dies.

‘‘

So the pandava brother called Krishna and said, “As per Bhishma’s advice I wish to give you these offerings as a mark of respect.”

pack of calcium, iron protein and fibre WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015

Recipe

While the roti’s lower part gets slightly dry, use a soft piece of cloth to apply water on its upper surface. Jowar roti is famous but may not be made by most of us on regular basis, probably because of not knowing the perfect procedure to prepare it. It is time you consider this high fibre chapatti that originated from North Karnataka to include it in your regular menu. Wondering why? Here are the amazing nutritious benefits from Jowar. Jowar (Sorghum) is ancient grain packed with higher calcium content, iron, protein and fibre. The gain has many cardiac benefits as it contains antioxidants and sorghum wax. Policosanols in the wax help in lowering cholesterol levels. Thus, it is an amazing grain that should be included in your diet. It goes well with raita, dal, curries or simple

J

noting. Jowar is available all over India and many countries in the World. * Serves: 10 * Preparation time: 20min * Cook time: 3min * Extra time: 2min soaking * Ready in: 25min * Ingredients required to prepare Jowar roti * Jowar ata (flour): 250gm, finely ground * Salt to tast * Boiled water: 1/2 cup

Method of preparation of Jowar roti Take a kadhai with shallow depth and wide mouth. Put finely ground Jowar atta into it.

Process to make roti The procedure is similar to the one used to make chapathi or wheat flour roti. Once your dough is ready, keep it aside for 10 minutes. Then, take a small piece of dough, make it circular using your palm. Place it on a flat surface of your kitchen platform to press. Use right hand to beat the dough in the form of circle, while you have to use left hand to maintain circle. Keep using dry flour intermittently to avoid sticking of the dough to the surface, while making roti. Once the roti is prepared, carefully transfer it to a hot tawa. While the roti’s lower part gets slightly dry, use a soft piece of cloth to apply water on its upper surface. Let the water evaporates a little.

Add the water and process the atta to make dough. (This dough is called jigatu in Kannada.)

Now, carefully reverse the roti and let the other side get cooked by gently pressing with cloth. The puffs of roti separate into two layers with steam inside.

To jigatu and add dry jowar flour, knead it thoroughly with just enough water.

Now take out your Jowar roti, it is ready to serve.

See to it that the dough gets consistency as that of chapati dough (may be even less water than that).

more than 50 people in the US and more than 50% of those employees are H-1B and L-1 visa holders. The bill will place severe restrictions on the Indian IT companies that are the largest users of H-1B visas. Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin have introduced a bipartisan legislation that will reform the H-1B visa program, consistent with the US Congress’s intent to ensure qualified American workers are given the first opportunity at high-skilled job opportunities. They argued that the H-1B visa was meant to fill gaps in specialized areas that cannot be filled

by Americans. “There’s a sense of urgency here for Americans who are losing their jobs to lesser skilled workers who are coming in at lower wages on a visa program that has gotten away from its original intent. Reform of the H-1B visa program must be a priority,” Grassley said in a statement.

employer compliance with program requirements, as well as to penalize fraudulent or abusive conduct. It requires the production of extensive statistical data about the H-1B and L-1 programs, including wage data, worker education levels, place of employment and gender.

They said that outsourcing companies import large numbers of H-1B and L-1 workers for short training periods and then send these workers back to their home country to do the work of Americans. The Bill gives the labour department full authority to review, investigate and audit

“Undoubtedly, this is a major setback for Indian IT companies. The Bill, if it goes on to become a law, would be a speed breaker for the thriving IT business. Even though the Bill purportedly targets saving ‘qualified American jobs’, this development should also be seen in the background of the

forthcoming US Presidential elections scheduled in 2016. Senators will take up people centric issues,” said Rakesh Prabhu, partner-immigration practice in Bengaluru-based ALMT Legal.

There is almost no correlation between the amount of money we earn, the number of possessions we buy and our sense of inner bliss and prosperity. “It is only God's presence in our lives which makes us rich. Golden Temple was built during the leadership of the fifth Guru (Guru Arjan, 15811606). On several occasions the temple was destroyed by the Muslims, and every time was rebuilt more beautifully by the Sikhs. From 1767 onwards, the Sikhs became strong enough and peace returned to the Golden Temple.

Guru Ka Langar: The community kitchen of golden temple The kitchen (Community kitchen of golden temple) also called langar hall (in Punjabi) is one of the largest free kitchens to be run anywhere in the world. The concept of langars was initiated centuries ago by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion. Salman Khan set a benchmark for the ultimate Boy Scout with his Bajrangi Bhaijaan act, and now he surprises us even more. His character is so virtuous that you will walk out of the theatre fighting a morality crisis. He has a counterpart in Maithili who is solidly underpressure to perform as per the royal decree. Our Miss goody two-shoes runs an NGO, eats at not-so-classy restaurants and wears matching clothes. And yes, she sometimes likes to flaunt her little black dress for some ‘quality time’ with her fiancé. Just to make sure the message is conveyed to the audience, Diwan Jee (Anupam Kher) explains ‘quality time’ with a lot of hesitation and innuendos. On second thoughts, you need to do this in a film which is strictly vegetarian in its approach. For your reference, people eat veg korma, tanduri bhindi and butter chole in PRDP.
