Mishing

Man of worthiness

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

The Mishing or MisĂng or Miri, are an ethnic group inhabiting the districts of Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tinsukia,Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat and Golaghat of the Assam state in India. They belong to greater Tani people community which comprises many tribes in Arunachal Pradesh in India and Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in China.

All Tani tribes share linguistic, cultural and ritual similarities. All Misings trace back their root to Abutani or Abo Tani (The first man on earth) like any other Tani tribes. Legends says that they came into contact with more civilised communities living in plains of Assam as early as in the 16th century. Because of this, they lost their violent tribal nature and many embraced the Vaishnavite religion. Though they belong to Tani group of tribes and they used to be hill dwellers, they started living on the banks of rivers in the plains of Assam. Misings presently living in the plains of Assam were not a one single tribe, but evolved into one when many tribes from various Tani tribes in Arunachal Pradesh migrated to the plains of Assam in search of fertile land as well as in search of civilisational

progress. The Misings believe Abotani as their ancestor and is supposed to be a son of mother Sun and father Moon of the Heavenly abode. The Mising people inhabiting by the Plains believe Gumin as one of the earliest ancestors, the forefather of a lineal family of Abotani. The sons of Gumin are grouped in clans, the names of which are represented by the existing surnames in the society. They are all blood related brothers with a social restriction of matrimonial relationship among them. A few non-Mising speaking groups like Bihiya, Samurguria etc. are predominant. These groups write some of their surnames as Saikia, Baruah, Medhi, Kachari, Patgiri Changmai etc. and soon forget their Gu:min and Opin Identity. The division into Borgam and JANUARY 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION Dohgam, which was an administrative system introduced during Ahom Kingdom, is non-existent in the society today. As such the multifarious form of division, have no bearing at all in identification of Guhmeen ad Opeen Concept since time immemorial in maintaining their fabric of socio-cultural system.

20

The Opin of Gumin are all blood related brothers known as Urom bibosunam Beerrang originating from a common ancestor father and there is no restriction in offering prayers in the Rituals in common platform. There is another form of brotherhood existing in the society which has been traditionally accepted as affiliated brother or Tomeen sunam Beerrang from different opin. In both types of Brotherhood marriage among themselves is forbidden in the society. Mishings have their own unique folk music, dances and musical instruments. Most of these are used or performed on their social and religious festivals.

Mishing’s folk music Ahbang is a verse of hymn of praise and worship of gods and goddesses. WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

Ahbang is sung by the Mibu (priest) at rituals. There is also community Ahbangs generally used in Pobua, a ritual festival, praying for better crops, health and happiness. Kaban is one of the oldest forms of Mishing folk songs. It is lamentation music and recalls sad events. At the death of a dear one, the women burst out into a sort of cry and the song for an outsider may sound funny. Tebo Tekang is a romantic lyric, narrating some love encounters. Siuhlung Nitom is a melancholic song, sung in lonely places like jungle. Bini are lullabies sung either at home or in the field, taking babies to places of work. The baby is tied to the back of the mother or the young babysitter. Midang Nitom is usually sung at the time of ushering in a bride to her new home, often in order to tease her. These too are rather melancholic, since they depict the sadness of brides wailing at being separated from her family, friends and the familiar childhood environment. Oi Nitom is the most

popular form of Mishing folk song, sung by Mishing youths when they are working or moving about the fields, woods, etc. It is an integral part of the Mishing Sohman (dance). It has a variety of themes ranging from romance, humour, tragedy and socio-cultural motifs. Each line in an OiNitom is of seven syllables.

Musical instruments Mishings have rich folk music such as dumdum, lupi, lehnong, marbang, bali, etc. Which are used in Gumrak dance and are common to other locals. The typical type of traditional instruments played in Mishing folk music are ezuk tapung, derki tapung, tumbo, tapung tutok tapung, ketpong tapung, gekre tapung, dendun, dumpak koreg, gunggang, tulung etc. These are mostly wind instruments made of bamboo. Yoksa (sword) is used as a musical instrument by the priest during religious dance.

Dances Gumrag is performed five times in circles. Drums and cymbols are the usual musical instruments for the dances. Mibu Dagnam is a priestly dance performed mostly JANUARY 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Selloi is a kind of merrymaking song and dance often performed for fun, by young boys and girls with the accompaniment of drums or cymbols. It marks the beginning of influx of the Mishing people from hills to plains of Assam.

Gumrak Sohman dance is performed on the occasion of Ali-Aye-Ligang. Lotta Sohman dance is performed on any occasion, as an expression of joy or community celebration. Old and young, all join in these dances

Marriage The Mishings are a patrilineal and patrilocal society and so, as per customary law, only the male children are entitled to inherit the property of a family. However, daughters can inherit the clothes and jewellery of their mothers. [citation needed] Marriages amongst the Mishings take place in four ways: (i) formal marriages through negotiation

Occasionally, all sections of Mising people indulge in singing and dancing lereli in sheer fun and merriment, especially at the meeting of old friends.

(ii) marriage by elopement

Ejug Tapung Sohman is a very ancient form of dance performed to the accompaniment of ejug tapung, a wind instrument resembling the snake charmer’s been.

The most common form of marriage in rural areas is the one by elopement. When a boy is in love with a girl and intends to marry her, but cannot afford the cost of a formal marriage,

or expects some opposition to the marriage from some quarter, or would like to start a conjugal life without delay, he chooses elopement with the girl as the best option. More often than not, marriages by elopement are followed by due social recognition through simple formalities. Formal marriages are arranged through two or three stages of negotiation, but although arranged by parents or guardians, the marriage of a boy and a girl totally unknown to each other, would be very rare. Polygamy is permissible as per customary law, but it is not looked upon as an act of honour anymore. Polyandry is unknown altogether. Widows or widowers can remarry. Customary law allows divorces, but they are not very common. It is also customary for a groom’s parents or guardians to pay bride price – mostly nominal – to the parents or guardians of the bride. Clan endogamy is taboo.

Killing of

Asuras WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

One Day Rama and Krishna were grazing the calves on the bank of the Yamuna with other boys. There arrived a demon by name Vatsasura who came with the intention of killing Krishna. The demon assumed the form of the calf. He mingled with the other cows. But he could not escape the eyes of Krishna, who pointed him out to Balarama . Then Krishna approached that calf as if casually. He caught hold of his hind legs and whirled him round and round and hurled him towards a big tree. Struck against that big tree, the demon fell dead assuming his huge real form. The boys were astounded to see such a dead body. They praised Krishna for his timely and wonderful act. Another day, Krishna and Balarama started early in the morning with food packets in their kit to graze the calves as usual. When it was midday, they took the calves to a lake for drinking water. After the calves had drunk, the boys too quenched their thirst by drinking that sweet water. When they got up from the lake they were terrified to see a huge crane standing there with a terrible look.

They thought it might kill them all. It had a long sharp beak. As soon as it saw Krishna, it rushed towards him and swallowed him in a trice. When Balarama and other boys saw that Krishna had been devoured by the gigantic crane, they became almost unconscious. Krishna turned himself into a ball of fire and started to burn the throat of the crane. Unable to bear the burning sensation the crane vomitted Krishna, who came out with a smiling face as if nothing had happened. The crane now ran after Krishna to attack and kill him with its beak. As the boys were watching with palpitating hearts, Krishna killed the attacking monster by tearing apart its beak. The boys were overwhelmed with wonder.

Indian origin Chet Kanojia grew up in Bhopal, but moved to the United States in 1991 to study engineering. He began working in the United States in 1995, and by 1999, he had formed his own company called Navic Networks. That company developed and harnessed technology to collect data on what cable to TV subscribers were watching in order to target advertisements at specific demographics. The company was monitoring about 35 million subscribing households when it was sold to Microsoft in 2008 for about $250 million.

Kanojia did not want to stay idle for long after selling Navic Networks and in 2012 he launched Aereo, which almost immediately raised uproar with broadcast television corporations. Aereo provides subscribers with a small antenna that allows them to stream and record programs aired on broadcast television for $8 per month.

subscribers.

In capturing and offering TV programs to its customers, Aereo dodged paying rebroadcasting fees which almost immediately drew lawsuits from broadcasters in its first markets, including New York.

“I am an engineer and because of that, I see the world through a different lens than most people. To me, engineering is the art of the possible. You imagine something and then you try to create it. Hopefully, along the way, you create something that has a meaningful and positive impact on people’s lives.” —Chet Kanojia

Aereo won most of its legal battles against companies such as FOX, ABC, NBC and CBS, but was on the losing side of a court decision in Utah, which helped to spur the case on to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2014. In the weeks before the court’s decision in June, broadcasters threatened that if the court sided with Aereo, they would consider halting broadcast content completely and move entirely to cable airing their programs through cable. On June 25, 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that Aereo’s service violated copyright law, prompting Aereo to pause its services several days later and issue refunds to

In a statement, Kanojia disputed the ruling and promised customers that the company would continue, the fight for subscribers and create new technologies to make a positive contribution to the world. Chet Kanojia’s Quotes

“Consumer access to freeto-air broadcast television is an essential part of our country’s fabric. Using an antenna to access free-toair broadcast television is still meaningful for more than 60 million Americans across the United States. And when new technology enables consumers to use a smarter, easier to use antenna, consumers and the marketplace win. Free-to-air broadcast television should not be available only to those who can afford to pay for the cable or satellite bundle. ” —Chet Kanojia

NRI IMMIGRATION

What is in store on

immigration fromTrump Sarkar The high stakes battle over immigration policy has politicians and thinkers on all sides of the spectrum preparing for battles. The President-elect has made immigration a focal point throughout his campaign, from his first announcement that he was running in the 2016 race.

F

From pledging to build a wall along the Mexican border to saying that he would massdeport millions of immigrants living in the US illegally and saying he would block foreign Muslims from entering the country (a position he later moderated), Trump has repeatedly pledged a hardline stance on immigration.

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

More than 700,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children are protected currently by a deferred action program established by President Barack Obama and another 4 million to 5 million were eligible for protection under a similar program for parents of US

citizens and lawful residents that was blocked by federal courts. Many of the families’ information could be in federal systems, allowing for targeted removal under a Trump administration. “We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and

proud,” Trump said, about young people brought to the US as children who meet certain education and work requirements. “They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.” He has pledged to roll back Obama’s immigration executive actions, which would include deferred action. He also has pledged to step up enforcement of deportation orders and

immigration laws, which he could immediately direct federal enforcement agencies to do. Trump also would have authority to instruct agencies to up their screening for visa applicants, including refugees, said Stephen Yale-Loehr, an immigration attorney and Cornell Law professor. He could immediately kick off the rule making process to roll back Obama-era regulations, like one making it easier for students to extend their authorization to study in the US if they go

into a science, technology or math field. “Given his nominees for both the Justice Department and DHS, I think they’re going to full bore ahead with day one telling the border patrol: ‘Start enforcing the law,’” said Hans von Spakovsky a legal and immigration expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation. “All of that can be done on day one and that’s going to immediately start not only reducing the population that’s in the country, but it will have an immediate effect on the flow into the country because the message will go out.” JANUARY 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Ambassador shot dead in Turkey The assassination of the Russian Ambassador to Ankara, Andrey Karlov, was a well-planned and premeditated murder, Turkey’s interior minister said. He said it did not happen at the initiative of the killer or out of any personal vengeance. WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

Karlov was shot dead as he was delivering a speech at the opening of an exhibition called ‘Russia in the Eyes of Turks’ at an art gallery in Ankara. The gunman, was killed at the scene and was identified as 22-year-old Mevlut Altintas, a member of Ankara’s riot police force. Earlier, the Turkish leadership accused the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) of being behind Karlov’s assassination in an apparent bid to sever Russia-Turkey ties. However, it is too early to jump in to any conclusions yet, as Russia’s goal is to “find the truth, not use the incident for some political gain,” the head of Russia’s Upper House International Relations Committee,

Konstantin Kosachev, said. Smartly-dressed in a dark suit and tie, Mevlut Mert Altintas blended in with all the other guests at the modern art center in the Turkish capital, an upscale neighborhood of luxury hotels and embassies. Mevlut Mert Altintas, a police officer who killed Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, could handle a firearm with ease. His first of multiple shots was a direct hit, piercing the back of Andrey Karlov as he spoke about the exhibit. “He knew it was going to be filmed and have consequence well beyond this room,” said Juliette Kayyem, a CNN national security analyst and Harvard lecturer. After firing multiple rounds, the gunman

shouted: “Allahu akbar (God is greatest). Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria! Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria!” “Only death will remove me from here. Everyone who has taken part in this oppression will one by one pay for it,” he said. “I describe this attack on Russia’s embassy as an attack to Turkey, Turkey’s state and nation,” said Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “After the [attack on the Russian ambassador], during the talk with Mr. Putin, we agreed this is a provocation and there isn’t any dispute,” he added.

A paradise for nature-lovers, Haridwar presents kaleidoscope of Indian culture and civilization. Haridwar also termed as ‘Gateway to Gods’ is known as Mayapuri, Kapila and Gangadwar as well. The followers of Lord Shiva (Har) and followers of Lord Vishnu (Hari) pronounce this place as Hardwar and Haridwar respectively. It is also a point of entry to Char Dham (Four main centers of pilgrimage in Uttarakhand) Viz. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Haridwar is also one of the four places; where Kumbh Mela occurs after rotation of every twelve Years and Ardh Kumbh after every six years. It is said that drops of Amrit (Elixir) fell in to the Brahmkund of Har-Ki-Parri, therefore considered that a dip in the Brahmakund on this particular day is very WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

auspicious and when Jupiter (Brahaspati) comes to the sign Aquarius (Kumbh) once in every twelve years the Maha Kumbh fair is celebrated at Haridwar. Haridwar is one of the first towns where Ganga emerges from the mountains to touch the planes. Lush green forests and small ponds add to the scenic beauty of this holy land. In the evening the ghats look breathtakingly beautiful as thousands of diyas (lamps) and marigold flowers float and

illuminate the holy waters. Being one of the oldest living cities, Haridwar finds its mention in the ancient Hindu scriptures as it weaves through the life and time stretching from the period of the Buddha, to the more recent British advent. Haridwar has a rich and ancient religious and cultural heritage. It still has many old havelis and mansions bearing exquisite murals and intricate stonework.

History Ain-e-Akbari, written by Abul Fazal in the 16th century during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, refers to it as Maya (Mayapur), known as Hardwar on the banks of Ganges, as seven sacred cities of Hindus. It is said that during his travels and

also while at home, Mughal Emperor, Akbar drank water from the Ganges River, which he called ‘the water of immortality’. Special people were stationed at Haridwar to dispatch water, in sealed jars, to wherever he was stationed. During the Mughal period, there was a mint for Akbar’s copper coinage at Haridwar. It is said that Raja Man Singh of Amber, laid that foundation of the present day city of Haridwar and also renovated the ghats at Har-ki-parri. After his death, his ashes are also said to have been immersed at Brahma Kund by Mughal emperor Akbar himself. Thomas Coryat, an English traveler, who visited the city in the reign of Emperor Jahangir (1596–1627), mentions it as ‘Haridwara’, the capital of Shiva. Something that is not well known today, that in an ancient custom detailed family genealogies of Hindu families for the past several generations are kept by professional Hindu Brahmin Pundits, popularly known as Pandas, at the Hindu holy city of Haridwar in hand written registers passed down to them over generations by their Pundit ancestors which are classified according to original districts and villages of ones ancestors, with special designated Pundit families

being in charge of designated district registers, even for cases where ancestral districts and villages that have been left behind in Pakistan after Partition of India with Hindus having to migrate to India. In several cases present day decedents are now Sikhs and many maybe Muslims or even Christians. It is not uncommon for one to find details of up to, or even more than, ones seven past generations in these genealogy registers kept by the Pandas of Haridwar. For centuries when Hindu ancestors visited the holy town of Haridwar for any purpose which may have mostly been for pilgrimage or cremation of their dead or for immersion of ashes and bones of their kin after cremation into the waters of the holy river Ganges as required by Hindu religious custom, it has been an ancient custom to go to the Pundit who is in charge of ones family register and update the family’s genealogical family tree with details of all marriages, births and deaths from ones extended joint family. Haridwar came under the rule of the Maurya Empire (322– 185 BCE), and later under the Kushan Empire (1st–3rd centuries). First modern era written evidence of Haridwar JANUARY 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

INDIAN TRAVELOGUE is found in the accounts of a Chinese traveler, Huan Tsang, who visited India in 629 AD during the reign of King Harshavardhan (590– 647). He records Haridwar as ‘Mo-yu-lo’, the remains of which still exist at Mayapur, a little to the south of the modern town. The city was also invaded by Timur Lang (1336–1405), a Turkish invader on January 13, 1399. During his visit to Haridwar, first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak (1469–1539) bathed at ‘Kushwan Ghat’, wherein the famous, ‘watering the crops’ episode took place. His visit is today commemorated by a gurudwara (Gurudwara Nanakwara), according to two Sikh Janamsakhis, this visit took place on the Baisakhi day in 1504 AD, he later also visited Kankhal enroute to Kotdwara in Garhwal.

salvation to his ancestors. It is also said that Haridwar has been sanctified by the presence of three Gods; Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Lord Vishnu is said to have his foot print on the stone that is set in the upper wall of Har-KiParri where the Holy Ganga touches it all the times. Devout believers feel that they can go to heaven by getting salvation after a dip in the sacred Ganga at Haridwar. In the Vanaparva of the Mahabharata, where sage Dhaumya tells Yudhisthira about the tirthas of India, Gangadwar, i.e., Haridwar and Kankhal have been referred to the text also mentions that Agastya Rishi did penance here, with the help of his wife, Lopamudra (the princess of Vidharba). It is believed that after churning Milk Ocean Dhanwantari emerged with a pot of Amrit (Elixir) and Devas took the pot of Amrit. Seeing this Asuras quarreled with Devas for the pot of Amrit and there was a war between Devas and Asuras. During the war Garuda took the pot of Amrit and while flying drops of Amrit has fallen in four places in earth. They are Haridwar, Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad. This manifested in the Kumbha Mela being celebrated every 3 years in one of the 4 places,

INDIAN HISTORY

Indus Valley

civilisation The Indus Civilization is among the world’s earliest civilizations that peaked around 2500 BCE in the western part of South Asia and declined during the mid-2nd millennium BCE and was forgotten until its rediscovery in the 1920s by R.D. Banerjee. 74

G

eographically, it was spread over an area of some 1,260,000 sqkm, comprising the whole of modern day Pakistan and parts of modern-day India and Afghanistan. Thus there is an Indus Valley site on the Oxus river at Shortughai in northern Afghanistan and the Indus Valley site Alamgirpur at the Hindon river is located only 28 km from Delhi. At its peak, the Indus Civilization may have had a population of well over five million. Among the Indus civilization’s mysteries are fundamental questions, WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

including its means of subsistence and the causes for its sudden disappearance beginning around 1900 BCE. We do not know what language the people spoke. We do not know what they called themselves. All of these facts stand in stark contrast to what is known about its contemporaries, Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. To date, over 1,052 cities and settlements have been found, mainly in the general region of the HakraGhaggar river and its tributaries. Among the settlements were the major urban centers of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, as well as Lothal, Dholavira, Ganweriwala, Kalibanga,

and Rakhigarhi. Additionally, there is some disputed evidence indicative of another large river, now long dried up, running parallel and to the east of the Indus. The dried-up river beds overlap with the Hakra channel in Pakistan, and the seasonal Ghaggar river in India. Over 500 ancient sites belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization have been discovered along the Hakra-Ghaggar river and its tributaries (S.P. Gupta 1995: 183). In contrast to this, only 90 to 96 of the over 800 known Indus Valley sites have been discovered on the Indus and WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

its tributaries. A section of scholars claim that this was a major river during the third and fourth millennia BCE, and propose that it may have been the Sarasvati River of the Rig Veda. Some of those who accept this hypothesis advocate designating the Indus Valley culture the “SarasvatiSindhu Civilization, Sindhu being the ancient name of the Indus River. Most archeologists dispute this view, arguing that the old and dry river died out during the mesolithic age at the

latest, and was reduced to a seasonal stream long before the Vedic period. The Indus civilization was predated by the first farming cultures in south Asia, which emerged in the hills of what is now called Balochistan, to the west of the Indus Valley. The best-known site of this culture is Mehrgarh, established around 6500 BCE. These early farmers domesticated wheat and a variety of animals, including cattle. Pottery was in use by around 5500 BCE. The Indus

civilization grew out of this culture’s technological base, as well as its geographic expansion into the alluvial plains of what are now the provinces of Sindh and Punjab in contemporary Pakistan and Northern India. By 4000 BCE, a distinctive, regional culture, called preHarappan, had emerged in this area. (It is called preHarappan because remains of this widespread culture are found in the early strata of Indus civilization cities.) Trade networks linked

this culture with related regional cultures and distant sources of raw materials, including lapis lazuli and other materials for beadmaking. Villagers had, by this time, domesticated numerous crops, including peas, sesame seeds, dates, and cotton, as well as a wide range of domestic animals, including the water buffalo, an animal that remains essential to intensive agricultural production throughout Asia today.

INDIAN HISTORY

The Indus civilization was predated by the first farming cultures in south Asia, which emerged in the hills of what is now called Balochistan, to the west of the Indus Valley. Town-planning: In some of the excavations, the remains of entire cities have been unearthed. From these it is observed that a Harappan city was protected by huge walls built on all sides. The walls had watchtowers at regular distances.

Seals: Square seals or

78

coins have been found in the excavations at various places. They were made of the powder of a particular white stone. Besides, seals of ivory, clay and metals, too , have been found. These seals bear the pictures of animals and manlike figures. At the top, letters are engraved in a script which has not yet been deciphered. Historians believe that such seals were used in rituals or for trade.

Earthenware: Shapely earthen pots is one of the characteristics of the Harappa civilisation. Several specimens of such earthen pots have been found in excavations. One city on another: At Mohen-Jo-Daro, the remains of cities built one above the other have been found. From those remains it WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

appears that the original city at the site perhaps got buried due to some reason. After a period of time, another city was built on the same site. Seven such layers of construction have been found at Mohen-jo-daro.

The Great Bath: A huge square bath of 56 meters x 56 meters has been found at Mohen-jo-daro. At its centre there is a tank measuring 12 meters X 7 meters and 2.5 meters in deep. There are steps leading down to the tank. The tank has been built in baked bricks in such a way as would prevent seepage of water. There is also a provision for draining and re-filling the tank from time to time. The Harappan people seem to have given special attention to facilities for cleanliness and hygiene. Their town-planning was systematic. The facilities provided in the Harappan cities clearly indicate that these cities must have had an administrative system which laid down rules of town management and implemented them strictly.

separated from the PSLV fourth stage. After separation, the two solar arrays of RESOURCESAT-2A deployed automatically and ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bangalore took over the control of the satellite. In the coming days, the satellite will be brought to its final operational configuration following which it will begin to provide images from its three cameras. The data sent by RESOURCESAT2A will be useful for agricultural applications

like crop area and crop production estimation, drought monitoring, soil mapping, cropping system analysis and farm advisories generation. Like its predecessors RESOURCESAT-1 and 2, RESOURCESAT-2A has a unique 3-Tier imaging system with Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS), Linear Imaging Self Scanner-3 (LISS3) and Linear Imaging Self Scanner-4 (LISS-4) cameras. The AWiFS provides images with a sampling of 56 metres, a swath of 740 km and a

revisit of 5 days whereas the LISS-3 provides 23.5 metre sampled images with 141 km swath and a repitivity of 24 days. LISS-4 provides 5.8 metre sampled images with 70 km swath and a revisit of 5 days. With the successful launch, PSLV has yet again demonstrated its reliability. The total number of satellites launched by India’s workhorse launch vehicle PSLV including today’s RESOURCESAT2A has now reached 122, of which 43 are Indian and the remaining 79 are from abroad. Devotional service rids of both good and bad action Sloka:

buddhi-yukto jahatiha ubhe sukrta-duskrte tasmad yogaya yujyasva yogah karmasu kausalam

Word to word Meaning buddhi-yuktah—one who is engaged in devotional service jahati—can get rid of iha—in this life ubhe—in both sukrta-duskrte—in good and bad results tasmat—therefore yogaya—for the sake of devotional service yujyasva—be so engaged yogah—devotion karmasu—in all activities kausalam—art. WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

One who is engaged in actions and performed in spiritual intelligence is superior. Verse meaning A man engaged in devotional service get rids himself of both good and bad actions even in this life. Therefore strive for yoga, O Arjuna, which is the art of all work.

Explanation Since time immemorial each living entity has accumulated the various reactions of his good and bad work, As such, he is continuously ignorant of his real constitutional position. One’s ignorance can be removed by the instruction in the Bhagavad Gita which teaches one to surrender unto the supreme lord in all respects and become liberated from the chained victimization of action and reaction, birth after birth. One who is engaged in actions and performed in spiritual intelligence is superior. By the grace of the Supreme Lord one acting in

this way is relieved of both good actions which leads to heaven and evil actions which lead to hell even in this very life. Therefore verily one should always engage oneself in the sacred science of one’s individual consciousness attaining communion with the Ultimate Consciousness by consecrating in righteousness all activities unto the Supreme Lord. This is known as karma

yoga. Because this sacred science is the actual skill in performing all activities, is the formula for righteous actions which turns even ordinary activities that normally lead to bondage into the means of liberation by offering them in righteousness unto the Supreme Lord.

Atletico de Kolkata became the champions of ISL 2016 after edging out Kerala Blasters on penalties. Eight teams, 60 matches, more than two months of football has finally came down. Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters have both gone wayward on multiple occassions. They have pushed forward with sheer determination and had the title within touching distance. “It will obviously be a comfortable atmosphere for us because it’s our home crowd but the crowd don’t play. They give us huge support. Whoever wins tomorrow needs to earn the trophy by playing well. I am sure both sides have that intention going into the game. The crowd is nothing more than a great background for us to play against but it won’t give us a

goal-start or stop goals going in,” said Coppell before the match. “I don’t know whether we are the most consistent. It’s true we only lost two matches but I have respect for all teams. Kerala have had a great season but we will try to win. We want the trophy,” Molina too said. Atletico de Kolkata became the 2016 Indian Super League (ISL)champions after beating Kerala Blasters 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in extra time. Henrique Sereno scored for the visitors after Mohammad Rafi handed the lead to Kerala Blasters. Atletico de Kolkata came back from the trailing 1-0 in the first half of their Indian Super League (ISL) final and then 2-0 in the penalty

shootout against Kerala Blasters, before pulling through to win 4-3 in the shootout to claim their second ISL title in three years at a jam-packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi. Ouzin Ndoye and Cedric Hengbart both missed penalties for Kerala after Antonio German and Kervens Belfort had converted, as ATK held on to win despite Iain Hume missing from the spot while taking the first kick against his old team in the shootout. The winning penalty was converted by Jewel Raja, after Sameehg Doutie, Borja Fernandez and Javi Lara had earlier converted for Kolkata.

Vangaveeti Analysis :

114

Vangaveeti is one more disappointment from Ram Gopal Varma as the film offers nothing much except a boring known documentary. Story : Vangaveeti is the story of Vijayawada politics that happened during the late 70s and the early 80s. It is the life story of powerful politician Vangaveeti Ranga and his emergence as a mass leader in Vijayawada. Vangaveeti film showcases the murders of many legendary political personalities during this period. Watch the film to know about the know facts that happened in real life.

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JANUARY 2017

The first half of Vangaveeti manages to make some impact at times however the entire first half of Vangaveeti is a poor show that lacks an interesting script. The songs throughout the film act as barriers in the film and the climax episodes make the film interesting. On the whole the first half of Vangaveeti fails to make much impact on the audience. The second half of Vangaveeti dips down completely and the entire basic plot has been deviated. Most of the episodes look dragged and the climax of the film has been completely simple. The songs once again are unnecessary and the dubbing has been poor. Varma fails to make any impact with Vangaveeti and the film ends up on a below average note.

Final Word: Vangaveeti is one more disappointment from Ram Gopal Varma as the film offers nothing much except a boring known
