mesmerizing village near Indore Bagh is a small town in the district of Dhar in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Known for the famous Bagh Caves (Pandu Guffah), of late 4th c - 6th c, Buddhist rock-cut chambers with exquisite murals.

The khatri community, who comprise the ‘chhipas’ or printers came here about 400 years ago from Larkana is Sind which is famous for its Ajrak prints. Bagh’s proximity to the river was an important reason for its choice as flowing river water is vital to the process of printing. The design repertoire of Bagh prints covers geometrical and floral compositions and the blocks used for stamping are intricately and deeply carved by block-makers in Pethapur in Gujarat. Bagh layouts are dramatic in the use of black and red alternately on a white background. The black colour is prepared with ferrous sulphate mixed with tamarind seed powder and glue which is cooked in water and stored for use. Each sari takes a minimum of three weeks to complete after the design is printed. During his period it is washed at last three MARCH 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

times and sent to the bhatti or oven at least twice. Two persons stand knee deep in water to wash the fabric so that superfluous colour is removed. The fabric / sari is boiled in a cauldron of water on a bhatti with regulated heat for the colour to emerge. This is extremely painstaking. The fabric used originally was cotton, though now saw, tassar, crepe and silk are being used with excellent results. Every process used is manual and though the techniques and designs are age-old they have a contemporary appeal.

Agrawal known for their business acumen 16

Agrawal or Agarwal, is a community found throughout northern India, including in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Before the partition of India in 1947, people of the community were also found in modern day Punjab province of Pakistan.

T

The legends of the Agrawal community, traces the origin of Agrawals to the legendary king Agrasena of the Solar Dynasty who adopted Vanika dharma. Agrawal means “children of Agrasena” or the “people of Agroha”, a city in ancient Kuru Panchala, near Hisar in Haryana region, said to be founded by Agrasena. Maharaja Agrasen is known as an icon of non-violence and messenger of Peace. Maharaja Agrasen was an embodiment

Agrawal community is known for their business acumen and have for many years been influential and prosperous in India. During the eras of the Mughal empire and the British East India Company administration, some Agrawals migrated to Bihar and Kolkatta,

Sahu Todar was a supervisor of the royal mint at Agra, who had rebuilt the 514 Jain stupas at Mathura in 1573, during the rule of Akbar. According to many sources, Raja Todar Mal, who was one of the Navaratnas of Mughal emperor Akbar’s Darbar, was an Agrawal. He became the Finance Minister of the Mughal empire.

Sah Ranveer Singh was a royal treasurer during the rule of Akbar. He was awarded a jagir in western UP, where he established the town of Saharanpur. His father, as well as son and grandson had built several Jain temples, including the one at Kucha Sukhanand in Delhi. Lala Ratan Chand became the Diwan of Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar (1713–1719) in 1712, and was given the title of Raja. The word ‘Bawariya’ means, the people who roam in Hindi. 20

The Bawariya is a Hindu caste, which is found in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab in India. The tribe has a scheduled caste status in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab states. They are also known as ‘Bauria’ in Punjab. The Bawariya is considered as a community of people and not a caste, but the caste system of India puts them into the caste category. The tribe keeps away from the caste system practiced in India and still retain their original nomadic lifestyle. At present, the Bawariya Community is found in the Banda, Meerut, Manipur, Muzaffarnagar and Agra districts of the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana states of the country. Their language is Bawari, which is quite similar to the Marwari. According to a belief in Punjab,

Bawaria or Bauria get their name from the word ‘baur’ that means a net. In Punjab, the community is mainly found in the districts of the Bhatinda, Sangru, Ludhiana and Firozpur. The Bawarias are traditionally hunters. They are gifted with a skill for capturing small animals. The community lost its chief source of livelihood due to the ban on hunting, imposed under an amendment to the Wildlife Act in 1993. The community is finding the assimilation process difficult. They required a land to settle on, a decent livelihood, shelter and, crucially, social acceptance. stormy, turbulent, yet productive

The Parliament’s Budget session has started on February 23rd against a turbulent backdrop of unrest on university campuses, the Jat agitation in Haryana, an agrarian crisis, terrorist strikes and attacks on freedoms. To blunt an anticipated attack by the Opposition, the Modi government has adopted a strategy to confront its critics directly by making the JNU “sedition” controversy the centrepiece of this session.

The Budget session is held in two parts, Parliament will close for a recess on March 20 and will re-convene on April 20. The session will end on May 8. MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party, rather than those from the Opposition, have already given notice for a discussion on the subject ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget. By presenting itself as the flagbearer of nationalism, the BJP believes it will be able to seize the advantage from the Opposition. Already, the BJP and the WWW.WISHESH.COM | MARCH 2016

His eager eyes noticed, a huge heap of grains stocked nearby. He collected a handful of grains in his tiny fists and ran to the street. On the way most of the grains fell down to the ground from his hands. He came to the fruit seller and holding out his hands said, ”O dear lady, take these grains and give me fruits in exchange.” The woman was carried away by the beauty and charm of the boy. The

tinkling of the anklets of his feet was sweet music to her ears. She was never to forget it in her life. She said, “O my child! You have come to purchase fruits in exchange of grains. All the grains have fallen down on the way, but still you may take whatever quantity of fruits you like.” So saying, she filled his small hands with as many of those fruits as he could hold after he had dropped into her

basket the few grains. When the woman went home and looked into her basket she could not believe her eyes. All the grains had turned into jewels and gold. By performing this miracle Krishna showed that anything offered to Krishna with love and affection returns to the devotees increased a thousand fold.

decreases death risk! 32

You are no more eligible to work, employers say, throwing out the old people, in the name of retirement. But it should be remembered that they are only ineligible to work, but are always eligible to feel and enjoy the life, from the other end.

w

What is feeling the life from the other end, after the retirement? May be maintaining the social groups!

order to have a long and healthy retirement,” said lead author Niklas K. Steffens of The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

The study says that, staying away from the social groups during the retirement transition may be tied to lower quality of life and higher risk of death, over the next six years.

He says that, social groups provide a sense of identity. “Amongst other things, they give you a sense of belonging, meaning, and purpose,” he says.

“As people reach the end of their working lives, they are typically exposed to a lot of advice about how to plan their finances, medical care, and physical exercise in

Recently, a survey was conducted on 424 adults who retired between 2002 and 2010 and 424 similar older adults who did not go through the retirement transition.

In the survey, the people are questioned on work status, age, sex, quality of life, subjective physical health and socioeconomic status. The surveys even asked about membership in eight categories of social groups, including social clubs, church or other religious groups. About three-quarters of both groups were married. After conducting the survey, the report stated that, the death risk over the next 6 years is 2% for those who retired and were members of two social groups while still working and maintained both group membership. The threatening fact is the WWW.WISHESH.COM | MARCH 2016

death risk is found to be 5%, if they lost one group membership and 12%, if they lost both group memberships.

As the comparison group did not deal with the retirement, it cannot be compared with the retirement group, Wang said.

As group membership decreases, even the quality of life also decreased. “These effects are not small but are comparable with those derived from regular physical exercise,” Steffens said.

“The issue with this kind of study is causality is very difficult to determine. While my inclination is that social membership would probably help directly or indirectly,” that’s not necessarily the case based on this study, he said.

This study provides initial evidence of some connection between social groups and quality of life or mortality, but the statistics did not actually test directly the number of membership changes, said Mo Wang of the University of Florida, Warrington College of Business in Gainesville.

He further suggests that while joining a new group, one needs to assess that the group they are going to join, is free from giving stress. “If you are in the process of retiring and don’t belong to any group, join one,” Steffens said. “If you exercise

regularly, this is also likely to be good for you and your health.” Exercising in a group may be even better. “One important way for all of us to enhance the health of those who are retired is to support them in their efforts to be part of groups that provide them with a sense of communality and belonging,” he adds.

Ingredients (measuring cup used, 1 cup = 250 ml) 1. 2 cups regular rice (sona masoori, basmati, kolam or any variety) 2. 1 cup parboiled rice or boiled rice or idli rice 3. A fistful of Poha/aval (parched rice) or cooked rice 4. 1 or 1.5 cups grated coconut or 1 cup thick coconut milk 5.

½ tsp dry active yeast

6.

2 tbsp sugar

7. 1 tsp salt or add as required 8. Water or as required for grinding 9.

Oil as required

Instructions Rinse both the rice varieties together for a couple of times. Soak both the regular rice, parboiled rice in water for 4 to 5 hours. Drain and then add them to the grinder. Also add the grated coconut, cooked rice or Poha/aval, dry active yeast, salt and sugar. You can also proof the yeast separately and then add. Just take about 2 to 3 tbsp warm water. Add a pinch of sugar and dissolve it. Then add the yeast and stir. Let this solution sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 mins till it becomes bubbly and frothy. * check notes Add required amount of water and grind all the ingredients to a smooth flowing batter Pour the batter in a large bowl or pan. Cover and keep aside for fermenting for 8 to 12 hours, depending on the temperature conditions. The batter will rise and increase in volume the next day. Heat a kadai or an appam pan with handles. Smear some oil on the kadai. If using non stick kadai, then skip smearing the oil. Spread a ladle full of the batter. Turn and tilt the pan so as to spread the batter. Cover the pan and let the appam cook. The base would become nicely light golden. Serve appam, hot or warm with vegetable stew or sweetened coconut milk. MARCH 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Delloitte CEO Indian-born

Punit Renjan’s Story Still a youngster when the country was divided in 1947, Renjen’s father was forced to forgo engineering school in the United Kingdom and eventually moved back to Rohtak. In this small town in Haryana, some 80 kms from India’s capital town, the senior Renjen placed down his roots and established an electrical switch-gear firm.

w

When he was around seven, the young Renjen was packed off to The Lawrence school in Sanawar since Rohtak’s institutes, as his parents’ reasoned, simply weren’t good enough. “In the town that I was growing up in, that’s what you did if your parents had some means,” he said during a 2014 interview. The Lawrence school, established in 1847 nearby the foothills of the Himalaya, is among the country’s most elite institutions, among its alumni are a list of chief ministers, bureaucrats, business leaders and even members of the subcontinent’s royal families. MARCH 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

nri profile By the time he was 14, his father’s business collapsed, boarding school got too expensive and Renjen was asked to return home to continue his studies. “So I’d go to school in the morning, come back and then put in my time,” at his father’s plant, Renjen recalled during the interview. “And I did that for many, many years, four, five years.”

40

With cash tight, Renjen apparently had very little choice once it came to choosing colleges. “My father couldn’t afford to send me to any other college, so I went to the college in my local city,” he said in another interview. After graduating with a degree in economic science, Renjen chanced upon a newspaper advert for Usha International, manufacturers of stitching machines and different home appliances. He arrived in Delhi on a local bus, sporting jeans and without a tie, but landed his first job at the company. His early years at an elite boarding school would have undoubtedly given him an edge. In 1984, Renjen won a Rotary Foundation Scholarship that offered him a ticket to the US—and a place at Willamette University’s Atkinson school of Management. WWW.WISHESH.COM | MARCH 2016

While I was in school, a local magazine picked the 10 best students, and they picked me and profiled me in the magazine

Till then, he had never travelled outside the country, or even flown on an airplane. “I had this scholarship, two pairs of tight jeans and a couple of hundred extra dollars and I showed up in Oregon, and visited the college there,” Renjen said. Renjen’s call to attend the private liberal arts institution in Salem, Oregon was conjointly influenced by family; he had an aunt who lived in the city, who helped him in the transition into what would become a permanent move to the United States. At B-school, Renjen would sit at the front of class and record each lecture on a tape recorder. Inexperienced with the American accent, the boy from Rohtak thought it would be good to listen to the lectures twice over to catch each word spoken by his professors. Clear that he needed to apply his newly-acquired Master in Business Administration to an American firm, Renjen then

went out on an employment hunt that took him from Booz Allen Hamilton to Citibank. Eventually, though, he settled on Touche Ross—which incorporated with Deloitte Haskins & Sells in 1989—and Renjen never left. “While I was in school, a local magazine picked the 10 best students, and they picked me and profiled me in the magazine,” Renjen remembered in an interview last year. That magazine was picked up by Deloitte (Touche Ross) partner on a flight, who scanned Renjen’s profile and then asked an assistant to call him in for an interview. Lured by the promise of a consulting job—a profession that he knew precious very little about—Renjen rode a Greyhound bus to Seattle city. And (again) without a suit, he went through round after round of interviews, to eventually land the job. (That sort of sartorial inadequacy during a B-school student’s wardrobe would be frowned upon currently. Thirty

years ago, however, he still squeezed through.) “They were prepared to pay me $37,000 in the early 1980s and they wanted to hire me. And that’s how I ended up with Deloitte,” Renjen explained in 2014. “And 28 years later, I’m chairman of the firm.” And Renjen’s rise from an analyst to the chairman of Deloitte LLP (as the United States firm is known) in June 2011—and currently, to the position of chairman of Deloitte International (which guides all 47-member corporations, together with Deloitte LLP) — has been designed on one core skill:

They were prepared to pay me $37,000 in the early 1980s and they wanted to hire me. And that’s how I ended up with Deloitte Mergers and acquisitions. “I’m good at what I do,” Renjen said. “I’m really really good at what I do, and I’m not saying this with any level of arrogance. The only reason why I’m saying that is because I’ve put in over 25 years perfecting the craft.”

“This is a relay race,” he told colleagues last year. “I want people to say, ‘He really ran that race well, he didn’t drop the baton, he didn’t screw it up.’” From June 01, when he takes over as Deloitte Global’s CEO, a brand new lap begins for Renjen.

And it’s a running analogy that Renjen employs to describe his journey to the very top of Deloitte.

A Gift

Guide to your

Loved ones The immense of love you have on your loved ones, would not allow you to compromise in selecting them the gifts. You would want to give them the best and you lose yourself sometimes, in finding the definition for that best.

MARCH 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Relationship If you are facing such problem, here are the few tips to select a perfect gift to five different people, whom you developed feelings for.

1. An office crush: If you are in search of a gift for your crush at your work place, then remember, things like gold necklaces, crisp Oxford shirts, or perfumes are utter dangerous. The gift should be in such a way that, even though your fellow office mates or boss comes to know about it, they do not doubt your relation and take it only as a professional gesture. Try something as a small token of your love. It need not necessarily be a gift card, but if they have something like a desk collection, add a little something that blends in. The gifts like these, will make them think about you, even when you are not in their surroundings.

74

2. Girl/guy you came across, in outlet you visit regularly: Make sure that he/she knows the difference from you and a regular customer, who pays the bill and leaves the counter. Make all the gestures to let them know that you are trying to get him/her. Realize and alert yourselves knowing that they are on their job and you do not create a harassment atmosphere. Instead, use a greeting card to mention your name and phone number and put it near to them. The rest follows, if he/she is for you.you open up.

WWW.WISHESH.COM | MARCH 2016

3. If dilemma is their dearest Who doesn’t have the people, who give out mixed and confused feelings, when the opposite person expresses their love. It is not an exaggeration, if I say, most of the girls are manufactured in this confused factory itself. If you want to get some sort of clarity from the people like those, gifting a book or movie you would like to share, is perfect. A classic movie, or an elegantly bound book from a charming used-only retailer, has an unforgettable allure. If you want to cut the stalemate (one way or the other), an explicitly romantic present, like a single rose with a handwritten note, will do the trick.

4. If quarrels dominate love: You hardly remember the loving days in your relationship, as quarrels dominate it. In such relation, where you still cannot afford to lose, gift a truly thoughtful gift like the book they lost, or tickets for the concert, they die for or a snack they love but is hard to find.

5. If they do not expect anything You are blessed to have a partner who hardly expects anything from you. The partners like these, would feel happy, if do some rare things like donating money to the needy and other charity works in their name. Orelse who knows a gift from you turns a tradition, if he/she likes it. Try it and get the best of love.

Finally, it is not the value of the gift, but the amount of love, your partner should feel, through the gift you gave them. If you find one such person, you need not look back in your life again.

5 Differences Between and

Love

Attachment Love and attachment are one and the same!!! Not really! Did you feel the same? If so, let us explore few things and find out how different they are.

MARCH 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Love & Romance

5 Differences between Love and Attachment 1. Selfish In love, you are only concerned about making the other person happy and explore the ways to make her stay happy with you. You do not emotionally blackmail your partner nor manipulate or dominate them in any manner.

78

On the contrary, coming to attachment, you are focused upon the ways in which they can make you happy. You expect more from them and even tries to control them to avoid abandonment. Instead of confronting your own issues, you utilize your partner to improve your selfesteem and fill a void within you. You want them to bring you the happiness in your life and if they failed to do, you become frustrated.

2. Command “Bring out your originality, try to be true to yourself. This is what you can hear from the other person, if they love you. You will never be afraid to expose your weaknesses. WWW.WISHESH.COM | MARCH 2016

You want your partner to grow along with you, when you are in love. Your partner stimulates your growth, and you do the same for them

If at all the things go unfavorably with you, and get divorced from your partner, you still want them to be happy, through their life, if it is love. But if it is just an attachment, you develop hatred after getting separated and wishes them to face tough situations without you, in their life.

5. Ego

Trust takes you both and becomes a powerful catalyst for personal growth. Love never commands you. Your partner’s ability to accept you for who you are and encourage you to pursue your dreams allows you to let go of the need to control their life.

least concern to their feelings.

Attachment on the contrary, masters the commanding power. You hate your partner spending time with their friends, play mind games, or put an unhealthy level of focus on pleasing them. You constantly try to manipulate them to stay with you, giving

But in an attachment, you restrict both your growth and your partner’s, as your urge to control and your inability to solve your own problems, makes you do so.

3. Growth You want your partner to grow along with you, when you are in love. Your partner stimulates your growth, and you do the same for them.

4. Durability

The ego is an utter enemy of love. Your relationship helps to reduce your ego, fosters your growth, and boosts to love your partner more. The relationship you have with your partner brings out the positive changes in both. More importantly, you’ll both have the courage to share your weaknesses, expose your vulnerabilities, and communicate from the heart. In attachment, ego does all the damage. This is why many people repeatedly fall into a stream of disappointing relationships, each of which involves the same, recurrent problems. Finally, you are now in a dilemma and came to a conclusion that, all the feelings you are showing on your partner since long comes under attachment category, rather than love. Isn’t it? Ever since Buddhism arose in India, many monuments, sculptures, Buddha Temple’s construction and started spreading across the nation and worldwide. Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini, Nepal. Buddhism Starts spreading in India from ancient Magadha, now Bihar. Bagh Caves is one of the finest examples of Buddhism culture in western Madhya Pradesh of Central India. They are popularly known as Bagh Caves located on the bank of a seasonal stream called Baghani. It is a tributary river for Narmada river. In the words of John Marshall, “Of the whole vast galaxy of monuments that antiquity has bequeathed to India, none are more remarkable or more interesting to the archeologists than her rock-hewn shrines and monasteries”. Bagh Caves consists of 9 wonderful caves, built out of rock cutting, dating between 400 and 700 AD. These caves are surrounded with the beautiful WWW.WISHESH.COM | MARCH 2016

Of the whole vast galaxy of monuments that antiquity has bequeathed to India, none are more remarkable or more interesting to the archeologists than her rock-hewn shrines and monasteries paintings, having a similar touch to Ajanta Caves in the North of the adjoining Maharashtra state. There are only 2 groups of cave temples where we can see the murals of 5rh century CE or before, first in Ajanta & secondly in Bagh. Ajanta & Ellora have got their due popularity, but Bagh caves have been into oblivion from

tourists and common people which is its ill-fate. Buddhist monks resided here and used this place for meditation and religious congregation. The use of the word “cave” is a bit of a misnomer, since these are not natural, but instead examples of Indian rockcut architecture. The Bagh Caves, like those at Ajanta, were excavated by master

craftmen in the perpendicular sandstone rock face of a hill on the far bank of a seasonal stream, the Baghani. Of the nine caves, only five have survived. All of them are ‘viharas’ or monasteries having a quadrangular plan. A small chamber, usually at the back, forms the ‘chaitya’, the prayer hall. Most significant of these five extant caves is the Cave 4, commonly known as the Rang Mahal (Palace of Colors).

The paintings on the walls and ceilings of the viharas of Bagh, the fragments of which are still visible in Cave 3 and Cave 4 were executed in tempera. The ground is prepared with a reddishbrown gritty and thick mud plaster, laid out on the walls and ceilings. Over the plaster, lime-priming was done, on which these paintings were executed. Some of the most beautiful paintings were on

the walls of the portico of Cave 4. To prevent further loss of the values of Indian classical art, most paintings were carefully removed in 1982 and today can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Gwalior.

Verse meaning Work done as a sacrifice for Viṣṇu has to be performed, otherwise work binds one to this material world. Therefore, O son of Kuntī, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain unattached and free from bondage.

Explanation One has to work even for the simple maintenance of the body. Everyone in the world is locked and bound to the material existence by actions. Lord Krishna states ‘yagnaartaht’, sacrifices done for the Supreme Lord without expectation of reward are exempt from bondage. Actions

should be performed in a way, without desires, with firm faith and dedication to the Supreme Lord. Lord Krishna states, muktasangah, meaning free from attachment. Inappropriate are the actions that crave for desires due to attachment. Appropriate are the actions that are free from desires and attachment. All actions should be performed as a sacrifice to the Supreme Lord and no sacrifice should ever be performed with an intention for reward. Living entities being bound to material nature by their actions refers to actions which are contrary to divinity and righteousness as delineated in Vedic scriptures. Instead of

working hard to acquire funds for self gratifying endeavours, which causes one to bound in the material existence. Activities performed as an offering to the Supreme Lord known as yagna or sacrifice should be performed which are not bound to the material nature. One who has realised the effulgent Supreme Lord becomes free from all bondage. The smrti scriptures also state that jivas, living entities are bound by actions and declare that all actions are ropes of bondage. Everyone is bound by their actions but the actions that are prescribed in the Vedic scriptures as an offerring to the Supreme Lord cause no bondage.

The ten-day- long celebration commences in the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham (Feb March) on the Karthika star. However, the makers still went forward believing in Masakkali girl and finally, their confidence was kept up by Sonam, giving a flawless performance. Being regarded as the top most movie of Sonam, the success and appreciations gave a good boost to the actress to plan several other women based biopics. A mere adoption of a popular script like ‘Great Expectations’ and making it as a film, does not do it all. The popularity of that script even carries a lot of responsibility. In that lines, Fitoor could not do well. Most of the emotions in the film are the artistic kind of nature or to say far from the reality. That is the reason, one finds it tough to relate it personally and so tagged Fitoor as an intellectuals entertainer rather than a layman’s. However, Aditya Roy Kapur’s performance is the only hope for one to turn to the theaters and again Katrina Kaif is a let down, for her poorly narrated character.
