HISTORIC TALKS AFTER MORE THAN 50 YEARS

“We are willing to discuss everything but we need to be patient, very patient,” the Cuban president said to his counterpart in their first formal encounter in the last 50 years. Obama struck a more upbeat tone and he called it a “historic” meeting. “We are now in a position to move, towards the future,” he said. “Over time, it is possible for us to turn the page and develop a new relationship between our two countries.” Obama said he would be making a decision in the coming days on Cuba’s status as a state sponsor of terrorism after an inter-agency review. Castro called on the US to lift the embargo on his country and to return Guantanamo Bay, which he said was illegally occupied by the US military. Mr. Obama sat down for an hour-long meeting with President Raul Castro of Cuba, which the United States allowed to attend the summit for the first time since the meetings began in 1994. It was the first meeting between leaders of the Cold War-era foes. Mr. Castro roasted the United States, at considerable length, over what he called its history of oppressing Cuba. A region long tired of the mutual animosity and perplexed at the Cold War-era embargo, it seemed progress enough that the presidents were talking without hostility. “We have very different views of how society should be organized and I was very direct with him that we are not going to stop talking about issues like democracy and human rights and freedom of assembly and freedom of the press,” Mr. Obama said. “America never makes a claim about being perfect,” he said. “We can, I suppose, spend a lot of time talking about past grievances, and I suppose that it’s possible to use the United States as a handy excuse every so often for political problems that may be occurring domestically. “But that’s not going to bring progress,” Mr. Obama continued. “That’s not going to solve the problems of children who can’t read, who don’t have enough to eat. 10

WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2015

It’s not going to make our countries more productive or more competitive in a global economy.” “The cold war has been over for a long time and, frankly, I’m not interested in having battles that started before I was born,” Obama said. “The US will not be imprisoned in the past. We’re looking to the future.” “I respect Obama but I do not trust him,” Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro said. “We’re not against the US. I’m an admirer of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. We’ve never been against the US. We’re anti-imperialist.” This appears to have been a partial mistake. Clapton is British. US president had left the plenary before Maduro started speaking and the two leaders appeared to have avoided shaking hands during the summit. Like every other leader at the summit, Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff celebrated the move by Cuba and the US to build closer ties and said countless opportunities should emerge from the new regional environment. “The two presidents have shown the progress that can be made when we learn the lessons

of the past.” “These are societies that are not especially responsive to what Washington does or wants, and have not been for a long time,” said Julia Sweig, a Cuba and Brazil scholar at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs in Austin, Tex. “Despite really significant remaining differences in the region, by sweeping aside the Cuba problem I think you are going to see more leaders step up to the plate more on human rights and democracy,” said Arturo Valenzuela, the State Department’s former top diplomat for the region and a professor at Georgetown University.

SNOOPING ON NETHAJI, DIRTY TRICK OF NEHRU TO STAY IN POWER

Expressing shock and concern over snooping on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s family, BJP launched a scathing attack on Congress for the alleged role of its then government and said the opposition party has snooping in its DNA. BJP also cited examples of snooping on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s daughter-in-law and on former Finance Minister when chewing gum was found in his office. “The BJP today is definitely taking a stand that this is really surprising and shocking. Already on the dimension of snooping, research that has come out, I certainly feel that till 2010-11 snooping has become a part of Congress’ DNA. We express our concern,” BJP leader and Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. “The party (Congress) snooped then on Subhash Chandra Bose’s family and continued during Indira Gandhi’s regime when her daughter-in-law was also snooped on and the Finance Minister of the country was also subject to snooping, about which we do not know what came out,” the BJP Minister said.

“Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is the beloved son of India. There is news that there was surveillance on his family members, whom they are meeting, where they are going. I feel a thorough inquiry should be conducted and full facts must come to the open,” the Union Parliamentary Affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu told.

Intelligence Bureau kept relatives of Subhas Chandra Bose under close surveillance for two decades, most of which was during Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as Prime Minister, according to archival material, triggering a political controversy. The IB sleuths intercepted and copied letters written by the Bose family and even trailed them on foreign tours. Bose’s family reacted to reports with “shock” and said it was a “poor reflection” on the quality of democracy at that time. Congress however debunked such reports about snooping on Netaji’s family by the then government. Netaji’s nephew Ardhendu Bose, a former model and businessman, has said that his father believed the phones at their home in Mumbai were tapped. He said this was taken as proof that the iconic leader didn’t actually die in a plane crash in 1945. “My father never believed Netaji died in the plane crash,” Mr Bose told. Mr Bose said his family believed the only leader to be a “threat” to Jawaharlal Nehru was Subhas Chandra Bose. “If, Netaji has really dead and perished in the air crash, then why all this? Obviously there was some element of fact that Bose was alive, lurking around somewhere and would make an appearance,” he said.

The declassified files have revealed that Netaji’s close relatives, including his two nephews Sisir Kumar Bose and Amiya Nath Bose, sons of his brother Sarat Chandra Bose were spied upon for 20 years between 1948 and 1968. Mr Nehru was Prime Minister for 16 of these 20 years. Netaji quit the Congress before Independence over differences with Mr Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi and launched an organised military resistance against the British after raising the Indian National Army. But he was said to have died on August 18, 1945, two years before India won freedom. Netaji’s death has been one of the most enduring mysteries in India’s history and has been debated for decades. Ardhendu Bose said, “The conjecture is Subhas Bose was made to disappear in Siberia under the powers that be in India at that time.” Against the backdrop of the snooping controversy, Netaji’s grandnephew Surya Kumar Bose met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Germany and demanded declassification of all secret files related to the freedom fighter.

“Subhas Bose did not belong just to his direct family. He had himself said that the whole country is his family. I do not think it’s just the duty of the family to raise this issue (of declassification of Netaji files),” Surya Kumar Bose, the president of the Indo-German Association in Hamburg, said.

Before inserting the cartridges in the guns, the casing had to be removed with one’s teeth and thus the fat would have to come in contact with the soldier’s mouth. Therefore, the soldiers only refused to use those cartridges and revolted against such an experiment.

K A L B E L I A O R K A BELIYA IS ONE OF THE MOST S E N S U O U S D A N C E FORMS OF RAJASTHAN, PER F O R M E D B Y A T RIBE OF THE SAME NAME.

They are famous for their dance which is an integral part of their culture. Both men and women in the tribe participate in this activity to celebrate joyful occasions. Kalbelias are known for their frequent movement from one place to another in ancient times. Their main occupation is catching snakes and trading snake venom. Hence, the dance movements and the costumes of their community bear a resemblance to that of the serpents. They are also known as Sapera, Jogira or Jogi. They follow Hinduism. INDIAN DIASPORA

CULTURE

Kalbelia’s trace their ancestry from Kanlipar, the 12th disciple of Guru Gorakhnath. The largest number of the population of Kalbelias is in Pali district, then Ajmer, Chittorgarh and Udaipur district. They live a nomadic life. Kalbelia men carry cobras in cane baskets from door to door in villages and their women sang and danced and begged for alms. They revere the cobra and advocate non-killing of the reptile. In the villages, if a snake inadvertently entered a home, then a Kalbelia would be summoned to catch the serpent and to take it away without killing it. Kalbelias traditionally lives in spaces outside the village, where they reside in makeshift camps called deras. The Kalbelias move their deras from one place to another in a circuitous route repeated over time. Over the generations, the Kalbelias acquired a unique understanding of the local flora and fauna and are aware of herbal remedies for various diseases which are an alternative source of income for them. Today, performing arts are a major source of income for them and these have received widespread recognition within and outside India. Kalbelia dance is performed to celebrate any joyful moment in the community and is an integral part of Kalbelia culture. Their dances and songs are a matter of pride and marks of identity for the Kalbelias. They represent the creative adaptation of this community of snake charmers to changing socioeconomic conditions and their own role in rural Rajasthani society.

The dancers are women wearing flowing black skirts that dance and swirl, replicating the movements of a serpent. The upper body cloth is called Angrakhi and a piece of cloth worn on head known as Odhani, similarly the lower body cloth is called Lengha. All these cloths are mixed with red and black hues and embroidered in such a way that when these dancers perform these clothes represent a combination of colours soothing to eyes as well as to the atmosphere. The male participants take care of the musical part of the dance. They use different musical instruments such as the pungi, a woodwind instrument traditionally played to capture snakes, dufli, khanjari, a percussion instrument, morchang, khuralio and the dholak to create the rhythm on which the dancers perform. The dancers are tattooed in traditional designs and wear jewelry and garments richly embroidered with small mirrors and silver thread. As the performance progresses, the rhythm becomes faster and faster and so does the dance.

Kalbelia songs are based on stories taken from folklore and mythology and special dances are performed during Holi. The Kalbelia have a reputation for composing lyrics spontaneously and improvising songs during performances. These songs and dances are part of an oral tradition that is handed down to generations and for which there are neither texts nor training manuals. In 2010, the Kalbelia folk songs and dances of Rajasthan were declared as part of its Intangible Heritage List by the UNESCO.

WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2015

Iyengar or Ayyangar is a caste of Hindu Brahmins of Tamil origin whose members follow the Visishtadvaita philosophy propounded by Ramanuja. They are mostly found in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Iyengars are divided into two religious sects, the Vadakalai and the Thenkalai. They are also classified based as per gotra, or patrilineal descent. The original language of the Iyengar Brahmins is Tamil, but they also speak Kannada and Telugu. The Iyengar community traces their origin in Tamil Nadu from the period of Ramanuja. Iyengars display a mark on their forehead known as the Srivaishnava Urdhva Pundra as a caste mark.

37

INDIAN DIASPORA

TRADITION

The Iyengar community traces its philosophical origins to Nathamuni, the first Sri Vaishnava acharya, who lived around 900 CE. He is traditionally believed to have collected the 4,000 works of Nammalvar and other alvars, the poet-saints of southern India who were intensely devoted to Vishnu on both emotional and intellectual plane. The belief is that he set this collection commonly called the Tamil Prabhandams to music, and he introduced the devotional hymns of the alvars into worship, thus mixing the Tamil Veda with the traditional Vedas written in Sanskrit. A scriptural equivalence was accepted by the community that formed in acceptance of his works, with the Sanskrit texts considered to be metaphysical truth and the Tamil oral variants to be based on human experience of the same. This community became immersed in the duallanguage worship in temples where issues of caste were of no concern. Later, Ramanuja became the principal among religious leaders who formalised the efforts of Nathamuni as a theology. Ramanuja developed the philosophy of Visishtadvaita and has been described by Harold Coward as “the founding interpreter of Sri Vaisnavite scripture.” While Anne Overzee says that he was a collator and interpreter rather than an original thinker, although showing originality in his method of synthesising the Tamil and Sanskrit sources. Ranjeeta Dutta has said that the two sets of sources “continued to be parallel to each other and not incorporative” at this time.

38

WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2015

Nathamuni and Ramanuja were both Brahmins, while Nammalvar was of the Vellala caste which their community considered to be the lowest varna, known as shudra. All three men were Tamils, although Ramanuja documented his thoughts in Sanskrit. The Vadakalai sects are also referred to as the “northern” culture or school and the Thenkalai sect are the “southern” variant. These cultures refer the perceived prominence given by the sects to the terse style of Sanskrit traditions and the lyrical Tamil Prabhandams. The Vadakalai favour Vedanta Desika as their acharya and the Thenkalai prefer instead the teachings of Manavala Mamuni. The sects share a common allegiance to Nammalvar and Ramanuja and that their subsequent significant thinkers “wholly accepted the authority and importance” of both linguistic styles. Vedic philosophy holds that the supreme goal in life is to attain the blissful state of Brahman through moksha, being the process of liberation of the suffering soul from the cycle of reincarnation. Although eighteen points of difference between the two Iyengar sects are generally recognised, are referred to as the ashtadasa bhedas. Thenkalai holds that devotion is all that is necessary and that god will on his own initiative carry the devotee to salvation, like a cat carrying a kitten. Vadakalai holds that man has to win god’s grace through his efforts and he has to cling on to god, like an infant monkey clinging on to its mother.

Unlike the Vadakali, the Thenkalai Iyengar sect rejects the caste system and has accepted Shudras into its fold. The sect was founded by Pillai Lokacharya. Vadakalai Iyengars believe that it is necessary to offer obeisance / prostration to God multiple times, while Thenkalai Iyengars believe that it is enough if you offer obesaiance / prostration to God once. This is the reason as to why a Vadakalai Iyengar is often seen prostrating four times, while Thenkalai Iyengars are seen prostrating only once.

A typical Iyengar wedding are made up of the following events:

• VETHALAIPAKKU, • PANDALKAL, • JANWAASAM, • NISCHAYATHARTHAM, • NANDI OR VRATHAM, • KASHIYATHRAI, • OONJAL, • PIDDISHUTTAL, • KANYADAANAM, • MANGALAYA DHARANAM, • AKSHATHAI, • HOMAM, • SAPTAPADI, • NAGOLI, • VASTHRA, • GRUHAPRAVESHAM, • SAMBANDHI VIRANDHU, • NALANGU.

Sudama’s wife borrowed some rice snacks from their neighbor. She bound the food in a piece of torn cloth and gave it to her husband. Sudama took the bundle and left for Dwarka. On seeing Dwarka, Sudama was amazed. The entire town was built with gold and the people were very well-off. He asked for directions for Krishna’s palace & finally reached there. On seeing Sudama who looked like a hermit, the palace guards asked,

“Why have you come here?” Sudama answered,

“I want to meet Krishna who is my friend. Go & tell him that Sudama has come to meet him.” The guard smirked on seeing Sudama’s attire.

However, he hesitantly went & informed Krishna of Sudama’s arrival. On hearing Sudama’s name, Krishna immediately stood up and ran to meet him. Everyone looked in wonder upon seeing such a great King running bare-footed to meet his poor friend. Krishna took Sudama into the palace. They recalled their childhood days at the Sandipani’s school. Seeing Krishna’s wealth, Sudama felt ashamed of the rice snacks that he had brought and tried to hide the bundle, but Krishna snatched it from him. While enjoying the snack Krishna said, “I

have never tasted such sweetness in anything else.” Later, they sat to have their meal which was served in gold plates. Sudama felt sad as he remembered his hungry children at home. He stayed at the palace for two days but he couldn’t prepare himself to ask Krishna for any favors. On the third day, he got ready to go back home. Krishna embraced Sudama and escorted him out as he bid him farewell. On the way back, Sudama wondered, “WHAT

SHALL I SAY

WHEN MY WIFE ASKS ME WHAT I’VE BROUGHT BACK?” As Sudama approached home, he could not find his hut! Instead, his wife came out from a magnificent palace, dressed in elegant clothes. She told Sudama, “LOOK

AT KRISHNA’S MIGHT; WE HAVE BEEN RID OF OUR POVERTY. KRISHNA HAS ENDED ALL OUR MISERIES.” Sudama recollected Krishna’s pure love and his eyes welled up with tears of joy.

THE SELFLESS DEVOTION IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF ALL PROSPERITY. IT IS TO BE REMEMBERED THAT WHEN WE WORSHIP GOD, WE SHOULD NOT ASK FOR ANYTHING. THE ALMIGHTY GOD KNOWS ABOUT US AND GIVES WHATEVER IS REQUIRED. TRUE LOVE DOESN’T DISTINGUISH BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW STATUS OR BETWEEN RICHES AND POVERTY.

TIRUMALA VENKATESWARA TEMPLE IN ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA

History Although according to the Hindu mythological texts, this temple site was very much there even more than 1,500 years in the past. During the medieval ages, the Pallvas of the 9th-century AD who ruled from Kanchipuram, the Cholas of the 10th-century and also the Pradhans of the Vijayanagara kingdom during the 14th and 15th century were all ardent devotees of Lord Venkateshwara. It was under the patronage of the Emperors of the Vijayanagara dynasty, specially Sri Krishna Deva Raya, that this temple gained most of its current size and wealth. An idol of Raja Todar Mal, who was the revenue minister of Mughal Emperor, Akbar the Great, can still be found standing in this temple. The kings of Garhwal and Mysore were also ardent devotees of Lord Venkateshwara, who also donated generously for the betterment of this holy place. After 1843, with the coming of the Madras Presidency under the British Raj, this temple along with several other important Hindu shrines was entrusted to Seva Dossji of the Hathiramji Mutt, who is also known as the Vicaranakarta. This nonadministrative protocol of the temple continued till 1932, until the formation of the present day’s Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which was formed under the TTD Act. After the Indian Independence in 1947, now the daily responsibility of the TTD falls in the hands of an executive officer who holds the chair, appointment of the Andhra Pradesh government assigned by the Government Of India.

What to See Upon visiting this Dravidian temple, one cannot help but see the monumental tower of the Tirumala temple which is known as the Vimanam. The Vimanam is plated with several tons of gold sheets and it’s spectacular to look at it when its shines brilliantly in the rays of the tropical sun. Inside the inner temple or the Garbhagruha, which is below the Vimanam, is the sanctum sanatorium of the main deity- Lord Venkateshwara. On special occasions, Lord Venkateshwara is also adorned with a diamond studded crown and his body is dressed with yellow clothing which is tied with a gold belt 68

JALIANWALA BAGH CRUELTY OF BRITISHERS

72

WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2015

13TH OF APRIL is to be remembered for

the ultimate sacrifice of unknown people who has fought for the freedom of this country. They were not having any ambition like of the present day politicians, who does anything only for publicity or to gain positions. The unsung heroes took bullets to their chest for us to live with full independence and proud to be an Indian. 13th of April in 1919, thousands were massacred for protesting against the British government.

The figures released by the British government were 370 dead and 1200 wounded. Other sources place the number dead at well over 1000. This “brutality stunned the entire nation”, results in a “wrenching loss of faith” of the general public in the intentions of Britain. The ineffective inquiry and the initial accolades for Dyer by the House of Lords fuelled widespread anger, leading to the Non-cooperation Movement of 1920–22.

Dyer was initially lauded by conservative forces The 1919 Amritsar massacre, known as the in the empire, but in July 1920 he was censured Jallianwala Bagh massacre happened in the and forced to retire, by the House of Commons. Jallianwala Bagh (Garden) in the northern Indian He became a celebrated hero in Britain among most of the people connected to city of Amritsar, which was ordered the British Raj, the House of Lords. by General R.E.H. Dyer. On 13 April, the traditional festival of Baisakhi, thousands of Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh (garden) near the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. An hour after the meeting began at 16:30, General Dyer, the military commander of Amritsar, arrived with a group of sixty-five Gurkha and twentyfive Balochi soldiers into the Bagh. Fifty of them were armed with .303 Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifles. Dyer had also brought two armored cars armed with machine guns; however, the vehicles were left outside, as they were unable to enter the Bagh through the narrow entrance. The Jallianwala Bagh was surrounded on all sides by houses and buildings and had few narrow entrances. Most of them were kept permanently locked. The main entrance was relatively wide, but was guarded heavily by the troops backed by the armoured vehicles.

Apart from the many deaths directly from the shooting, a number of people died in stampedes at the narrow gates or by jumping into the solitary well on the compound to escape the shooting. Nearly 120 bodies were pulled out of the well.

The misery suffered by the people was reflected in Rattan Devi’s account. She was forced to keep a nightlong vigil, armed with a bamboo stick to protect her husband’s body from jackals and vultures. Curfew with shoot-atsight orders had been imposed from 2000 hours that night. Rattan Devi stated, ‘’I saw three men writhing in great pain and a boy of about 12. I could not leave the place. The boy asked me for water but there was no water in that place. At 2 am, a Jat who was lying entangled on the wall asked me to raise his leg. I went up to him and took hold of his clothes drenched in blood and raised him up. Heaps of bodies lay there, a number of them innocent children. I shall never forget the sight. I spent the night crying and watching.”

Dyer, without warning the crowd to disperse, blocked the main exits. He explained later that this act “was not to disperse the meeting but to punish the Indians for disobedience.” Dyer ordered his troops to begin shooting towards the densest sections of the crowd. Firing continued for approximately ten minutes. Cease-fire was ordered only when ammunition supplies were exhausted, after approximately 1,650 rounds were spent. Many people died in stampedes at the narrow gates or by jumping into the solitary well on the compound to escape the shooting. MAY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

HISTORY

On 14 OCTOBER 1919, after orders issued by the Secretary of State for India, Edwin Montagu, the Government of India announced the formation of a committee of inquiry into the events in Punjab. On 19 November, Dyer was called to appear before the Commission. Dyer stated that he had come to know about the meeting at the Jallianwala Bagh at 12:40 hours, but did not attempt to prevent it. He stated that he had gone to the Bagh with the deliberate intention of opening fire, if he found a crowd assembled there. Dyer explained his sense of honour by saying, “I think it quite possible that I could have dispersed the crowd without firing but they would have come back again and laughed and I would have made, what I consider, a fool of myself.”

“rebels”. He said he did not stop the shooting when the crowd began to disperse because he thought it was his duty to keep shooting until the crowd dispersed and that a little shooting would not do any good. In fact he continued the shooting until the ammunition was almost exhausted. He stated that he did not make any effort to tend to the wounded after the shooting: “Certainly not. It was not my job. Hospitals were open and they could have gone there.”

A young Sikh teenager who was being raised at Khalsa Orphanage named Udham Singh saw the happening with his own eyes. He vowed to avenge the Amritsar massacre. On 13th March 1940 at 4.30 p.m. in the Caxton Hall, London, where a meeting of the East India Association was being held in conjunction with the Royal Central Asian Dyer further reiterated his belief that the crowd Society, Udham Singh fired five to six shots from his pistol at Sir Michael O’Dwyer, who was governor in the BAGH WAS ONE OF “REBELS WHO of the Punjab when the Amritsar Massacre had WERE TRYING TO ISOLATE MY FORCES taken place, to avenge the massacre. On the AND CUT ME OFF FROM OTHER 31st July, 1940, Udham Singh was hanged at SUPPLIES. THEREFORE, I CONSIDERED Pentonville jail, London. “He was the real culprit. IT MY DUTY TO FIRE ON THEM AND TO He deserved it. He wanted to crush the spirit of my people, so I had to crush him.” Udham Singh FIRE WELL”. told the trial court why he killed Michael O’Dwyer. When Sir Chimanlal Setalvad asked DYER

IF “SUPPOSING THE PASSAGE WAS SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW THE ARMOURED CARS TO GO IN, WOULD YOU HAVE OPENED FIRE WITH THE MACHINE GUNS?”

“I THINK PROBABLY, YES” DYER REPLIED. “IN THAT CASE, THE CASUALTIES WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH HIGHER?”

“THE INCIDENT IN JALLIAN WALA BAGH WAS ‘AN EXTRAORDINARY EVENT, A MONSTROUS EVENT, AN EVENT WHICH STANDS IN SINGULAR AND SINISTER ISOLATION”, Winston Churchill. “The Indians were ‘packed together so that one bullet would drive through three or four bodies’; the people ‘ran madly this way and the other. When fire was directed upon the centre, they ran to the sides. The fire was then directed to the sides. Many threw themselves down on the ground, and the fire was then directed on the ground. This was continued for eight or ten minutes, and it stopped only when the ammunition had reached the point of exhaustion”, Winston Churchill

Let us bow our head in respect to the martyrs who has laid their life for our freedom. Let us remember our leaders who have sacrificed their life for our Dyer further stated that his intentions had been freedom. Let us be proud of the unsung heroes to strike terror throughout the Punjab and in who have braved the bullets in the Jallianwala doing so, to reduce the moral stature of the Bagh for our freedom.

TECHNOLOGY Gone are the ‘nasty’ plastics of Galaxy past. No faux leather finish as with the Note here either. Instead, the S6 has a metal chassis, and glass covering the front and back. The fit and finish makes you want to use words such as ‘chamfer’, ‘roundel’ and ‘drilled’, whatever they mean. While the S6 Edge gets a racy green finish to itself, the S6 gets a surfy blue. Both phones alternatively come in charcoal, white and gold – the finish is described by Samsung as ‘jewel-like’. Fortunately it’s classier than that sounds. The metal edges are almost imperceptibly darker from the white version to the charcoal version.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 The glass back and the front screen edges curve slightly into the chassis, and there’s a very thin bezel on either side of the 5.1in, QHD Super AMOLED screen. Yep, no 4K screen – but that was never the most desirable of the S6 rumours anyway. Despite the addition of all this glass and metal, the new S6 is lighter than the outgoing S5, albeit by only an imperial smidge. It feels solid and balanced, with a more traditional hand feel than the S6 Edge’s sharp sides. The power button is situated in the center of the right-hand side of the phone, above the pin-and-socket type SIM tray, and the volume controls are high up on the left side. The top has only a wee microphone hole and the IR sender. There’s much action on the bottom edge, with the headphone socket, microUSB and a newly placed, power-boosted speaker. Samsung say it’s 1.5x louder, a fact that we were unable to verify having left our portable anechoic chamber on the train. It’s got a lovely drilling, that speaker, but we daresay that HTC’s twin front-mounted BoomSound setup will still be the choice of the boom-tish social misfit.

Were it not for the bendy screen smarts of the S6 Edge, we’d be disputing Samsung’s enthusiastic use of the word ‘innovation’ – and no doubt Apple fans will be quick to shout ‘copycat’ at any forum that will receive them. There’s a danger, too, that the S6 will simply be the poor man’s S6 Edge – we’d drop the S6 in a hot minute if the Edge was within ?10,000 of it.

It’s hard to pin down a specific thing that makes the Apple Watch special, but having worn one for almost two weeks now, it’s become an important, valuable part of my everyday life. In some ways it’s the ultimate gadget. A device that no-one needs but that oozes desirability, that doesn’t change any aspect of life in a substantial way but makes a number of subtle improvements that you wouldn’t want to give up. You can’t say it’s greater than the sum of its parts because we don’t know what all of the parts are. Some derided the iPhone at its launch. Almost no-one saw the point of the iPad when that was announced. And I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that those have both been rather successful since. That’s because Apple had built not just desirable devices, but also powerful platforms full of opportunities for the world’s app developers. The Watch is and will be a similar story. It’s a very cool gadget - more desirable and more luxurious than the smartwatches that have gone before it, but also a platform that will be supported and stretched by more app developers than the likes of Pebble or Android Wear can realistically attract. The right now of the Apple Watch is pretty great. But the future of Apple Watch is really amazing.

COWON EK2

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL

IN-EARS

The Cowon EK2 features 10mm dynamic drivers, 16 Ohms of impedance, 103dB sensitivity, a 20-20,000Hz frequency range and a 1.2m flat cable. It’s a lightweight headset as well, since the casing is made entirely of plastic. The matte finish looks good, although the green of our review sample was a bit too bright and gaudy for our taste. Luckily there are more sensible colour options available, and in our opinion the black one looks best. The Cowon EK2 in-ears are open-backed, and the grille is visible on the back of each casing. As far as looks go, this is an interesting change from the vast majority of in-ears which have closed backs. Along with the engraved text on the back, this gives the casing an industrial look and feel. The rest of the unit is pretty standard, with a flat cable and Android-friendly in-line remote being the only noteworthy bits.

• Comfortable fit • Clean, neutral sound; impressive imaging abilities • Neat design

FIVE ELEMENTS Cosmos is full of beneficial energies which we must learn to tack as well as keep in balance, to experience a state of wellbeing. Energy is essentially emanated by two forces, the five elements and the electromagnetic energy generated by the rotation of earth. Sun, air and space are universally available and can be molded in accordance with human needs.

EARTH - There is the first and foremost element of nature which exerts maximum energy. The selection of site is considered very important in Vastu element. A detailed inspection of soil, plot, site, shape and size has to be done before commencing the construction. Earth (prithvi) is the most important element in Vastu and influence human lives in every way. WATER – This is present on earth in the form of rain, ocean, sea and rivers. It is the second foremost element considered in Vastu. Water is an element of north-east. As far as the flow of domestic water is concerned, it should be drained out of northeast only. The water bodies such as swimming pool and aquarium etc need to be made in north-east, this direction is auspicious and suitable for water FIRE - This is considered as an element of south-east. In a house kitchen fire or electrical gadgets shall be place in south-east. Light is the essence of life and sun is the natural light giver. Fire is the basis of all sources

of energy including thermal power and atomic power. There should be proper ventilation for sunlight being necessary and natural source of light for human beings.

SPACE

AIR - This is a necessary thing for all living on earth. Air is an important element. Air is an element of northeast. Air consists of various gases on earth like oxygen, nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide etc. A balanced percentage of different gases, atmospheric pressure and humidity level are important for living beings on this earth. SPACE - Sky is never ending and our space is full of constellations, galaxies, star, moon, sun and all the nine planets. It is also known as ‘Brahamand,’ the place of god. Indian houses used to have open space in the centre of the house. Akash is a brahmasthan which should be an open place, any disturbance related to space in house would lead to detrimental results.

Bhagavad Gita – Chapter 2 – Verse 30

Shloka

Explanation

dehi nityam avadhyo ‘yam dehe sarvasya bharata tasmat sarvani bhutani na tvam socitum arhasi Meaning of Verse O descendant of Bharata, he who dwells in the body is eternal and can never be slain. Therefore you need not grieve for any creature.

Meaning of Shloka

dehi--the owner of the material body nityam—eternally avadhyah--cannot be killed ayam--this soul dehe--in the body sarvasya--of everyone bharata--O descendant of Bharata tasmat—therefore sarvani--all; bhutani--living entities (that are born)

The eternal soul embodied within the physical body regardless whether it is a human earthly body or the physical bodies possessed by the demigods in the heavenly spheres; the immortal soul is eternally invulnerable even though the body perishes. Hence understanding this principle as fundamental, whatever diversity and variegated in the forms of bodies born from the womb of a female who was also conceived in the womb of a female that exists from the demigods down through the human species as well as to the animal species and the fish species and even including the immovable plants and trees it should be clearly understood that equanimity prevails regarding the essential nature of the immortal soul abiding therein whatever the bodily form, is eternal. Whereas, the physical body is transient. So Arjuna is being instructed that factually according to this proper understanding regarding all living entities, he has no basis to lament for any being. Lord Krishna speaks of the soul within the body of a every living entity indicating different bodies for different species all being receptacles of enjoyment in variegated ways. But due to the reality that all souls are immortal it does not behove Arjuna to lament as the soul is always entering into various external forms until liberation has been achieved. Lord Krishna establishes that the soul is immortal and the body is temporary. Therefore Arjuna as a ksatriya should not abandon his duty out of fear that his grandfather and teacher, Bhisma and Drona, will die in the battle. Though the soul is immortal, violence is not encouraged, but at the time of war it is not discouraged when there is actual need for it. That need must be justified in terms of the sanction of the Lord and not capriciously.

na—never

socitum--to lament

tvam—yourself

arhasi--deserve. MAY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Analysis The first half of the film has been racy with power packed action episodes and powerful dialogues which make the audience stick to their seats and watch the film interesting. On the whole the first half of the movie has been gripping and sensible enough. The second half of Gabbar Is Back has dipped at times but the accident sequences have been managed well. The songs have been poorly shot which makes the film fall at times. But the climax of the movie elevates the film which makes it a decent watch.

Final Word Gabbar Is Back is an out and out commercial film with all the masala needed. The gripping screenplay and the dialogues along with some emotional climax make the movie a must watch. MAY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Exclusive Interview

I AM NOT A FOOL TO HURT OTHER RELIGIONS Legendary actor Kamal Haasan, is back with yet another period drama Uttama Villain.

On the eve of the film’s release, we caught up with Kamal sir for a brief interview. Let’s see what he has to say.

Q)Why do you face so many problems to release your films ? Off late, it has become a problem to release films in India. There are many people who are ready to bring your film down for no reason. This is a democratic country, and everybody should have the right to showcase or speak what ever they feel like.

Q)Your film has received an ‘U’ certificate. But why did some Hindu organizations go against the film? India is a country which has 75% Hindu population, and I would be a fool to make a film which will hurt their sentiments. In fact, everyone should understand that I want people from every

religion to watch my films. Q) Why did you choose Ramesh Aravind as the director ? Even though I have written the script and screenplay, I wanted someone who can depict it well on screen. Ramesh is an old friend and an wonderful actor himself. He was the apt choice and has directed the film superbly. Q)How was the whole experience working with your gurus K Balachander and Vishwananth ? I have already worked with them in many films in the past, and like always I had a wonderful time working with them. Q)The

visuals

are

spectacular and looks like a number of dances are involved in the film. Tell us about that ? Yes ! there are a number of classical dances involved in the film, and the group dancers who have worked for the film are the best in the country. We have rehearsed for so many days and the output is just wonderful ? Q)Is Uttama Villain an art film ? There is nothing called art cinema. Everything what we make is for the public and its commercial. There is a lot of money involved and we want people to watch our film and appreciate us. Q)What care have you taken for the Telugu version ?

I have worked very hard for the Telugu version, and was involved right from the beginning. I should also thank producer C Kalyan for promoting the film so well. Q)Tell us about female leads ?

the

Both Andrea and Pooja have done a wonderful job. They suit their characters well and will be liked by one and all.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration if I said Kamal Haasan is controversy’s favourite child. The talented actor’s much-awaited film Uttama Villain was suppose to release today however it won’t as there is trouble brewing between the producers and financiers of the film. For now, all the shows of Kamal Haasan starrer have been cancelled across India. Though we don’t know what exactly the issue is but we hear Uttama Villain should be playing across theatres by evening. That’s what we have learnt however only time will tell if Haasan’s film will hit the screens today or not. Directed by Ramesh Aravind, Uttama Villain is a comedy drama peanned by Shruti Haasan’s daddy dearest himself. While we hope things get sorted between the producers and financiers of Uttama Villain soon, this isn’t the first time that Kamal Haasan’s film has faced problems. In 2013, Vishwaroopam was banned by Tamil Nadu government despite getting clearance from Central Board of Film Certification. MAY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

ARIES Uranus in Aries and Jupiter in Leo are your allies. It is good to take risks as you will succeed. Low profile is not recommended, on the contrary, show who you are, be confident in your skills and your personal charm. If you are starting a new job, you will be able to prove yourself. Listen, engage contact, and work. When there are some coffee breaks go and introduce yourself. If you are in a long term relationship, you are questioning its future. Dialogue is the best, avoid confrontation and don’t start with the sentence “we need to talk” as it can be scary.

CANCER

TAURUS Mars is in Taurus until the 13, enjoy this extra energy and charge your schedule, as you will be ok. Mercury is in your financial sector the whole month, so you will focus on your budget and ask for a raise or a bonus. You think you deserve it and it is the good time to ask for it, your chances to get it are high. Your schedule is busy with girlfriends after the 8th. If you are looking for love, it can be scary for a man to see you surrounded by women friends. If you are a man, you like them and they like you but that’s all. You spend comfortable moments with your family, cocooning is good.

GEMINI

Wait for May 8 and Venus arrival in your sign to see your love life get much better. If you are single, love is around the corner, say yes to any invitation even from your sister or brother. If anyone wants to introduce you to someone, be curious and open-minded, shut your prejudices down. If you already have someone in your life, you get along so well and easy that you are happy, sharing a good energy around you. Family is important and you care for your mother or father. Spend some time with your parents, you will feel good, Venus in Cancer gives you a deeper sense of family.

LEO Jupiter is still giving some great events in your life. Vacations in a nice destination, family events like birthdays and anniversaries, friends organizing parties and wanting you as special guest. Your popularity is high. Focus on friends as love can be frustrating, either your loved one is busy with work or he or she just needs some space. Don’t be clingy, it does not work well and you don’t really need that attitude to get love. Lilith in Virgo gives you a great sense of realism about your money. No stupid choices, no compulsive buying, you are reasonable for your own good.

Mercury is in your sign the whole month of May and it increases your thinking about life and intellectual subjects. If you are student, your chances of success for any test or exam are high, it is easy to study and remember what you learn. Looking for a job, multiply the interviews, send more inquiries, open your network, be more visible on the Web and you will for sure find a job that corresponds to what you expect. Venus stays in Gemini until the 8th, your love life is really great. In a long-term relationship, you make plans for the future.

VIRGO

SAGITTARIUS

Lilith in your sign opens your eyes about what you want in life. You may take some important decisions this month, moving out, changing job or breaking up with your loved one or some old friends who are too different from you now, you may catch up later with them but for now you need some distance. You will act very efficiently, always organized. You control your emotions when it could hurt. People may not understand your need for self-protection, you know very well how to create a shield, and you don’t show your sensitiveness to everyone.

SCORPIO Love is romantic this month and you find many ways to enrich the relationship, having fun and playing sexy games, you get words of love and flowers too. The more you give, the more you get from your partner, especially if he or she is Leo or Pisces or Aries. Work is less crazy this month than previously but still it is pretty fast as a rhythm. But this is a kind of pressure that you can put up with. Some Scorpios are waiting for an important signature and it will happen mid-May. Mind the details. You want to change you attitude about administrative papers.

This month is really busy professionally, expect to see piles of work coming every day on your desk. You may have the feeling that it is endless. Until the 14th it is hard and then it becomes a little lighter. Love is complicated as you don’t know exactly what you want in the relationship. Up and down in your mood, you are going to drive your loved one crazy. Aries or Leo will be ok with those shift but Taurus and Scorpios will not be patient with you. You prepare a trip and it puts you in a better mood after the 28th.

LIBRA

North node in Libra encourages you to sort your priorities in life. And it may not be easy to know what comes first, love or career and you may change your mind all the time. It is complicated to really choose. Take it day by day. You don’t want to give up your career and your independence but you also want to have a private life and maybe a child and time for a quiet life. Venus gives good vibes in your work, women are treating you nicely and if your boss is a woman, she trusts you and wants you to progress. Listen to her advice.

AQUARIUS Everyone knows you as the person most likely to make a difference in other people’s lives, but is that enough? Probably not! Your need to feel socially useful trumps all else on the 4th and 5th, so finding a charity event to attend or a cause to sponsor is your number one priority. You’re determined to throw off all of the limitations that are placed on you on the 10th, 11th, and 12th, and if anyone can succeed despite the incredible odds stacked against them, it’s you. Throw caution to the wind and carry on despite the people who are telling you you can’t do it. You’re a pioneer, an explorer.

CAPRICORN Love is passionate until the 14th, you spend all your evenings together, never having enough of each other. Complicity and tenderness are also important as much as sensuality and passion. Work is gratifying, and you spend extra hours after May 22nd. Your boss will be happy with the quality of work you provide, everything is done on time and well. You are sometimes too perfectionist and it slows you down. Let go of some details. A new coworker is bringing some competition, thanks to Mars in Gemini, you will speed up to win, a healthy competition.

PISCES Listen to your intuition it is crystal clear and it is helping you to make the best choices. Friends or work, you know exactly what you should do and what you should avoid. If you are fed up with a friendship you don’t need to force yourself to keep the relationship. Love is complex because of you, good mood, bad mood, you don’t control it. You take some words very seriously and you react strongly even when he or she is just joking. Relax and put yourself to the same level. You need to sleep more and to take some vitamins to keep a mood that could be more even.
