UN TY STATUE OF

Sadhu bet, Near Sardar Sarovar Dam, Gujarat, India

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel 31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950

Patel was an Indian barrister and statesman, one of the leaders of the Indian National Congress and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India. He was a social leader who played a leading role in the country’s struggle for independence and guided its integration into a united, independent nation. In India and elsewhere, he was often addressed as Sardar, which means Chief in Hindi, Urdu and Persian. He was raised in the countryside of Gujarat. Vallabhbhai Patel was employed in successful practice as a lawyer. Patel subsequently organised peasants from Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in Gujarat in non-violent civil disobedience against oppressive policies imposed by the British Raj; in this role, he became one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat. He rose to the leadership of the Indian National Congress and was at the forefront

‘‘

of rebellions and political events, organising the party for elections in 1934 and 1937, and promoting the Quit India movement. As the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India, Patel organised relief for refugees in Punjab and Delhi, and led efforts to restore peace across the nation. Patel took charge of the task to forge a united India from the British colonial provinces allocated to India and more than five hundred selfgoverning princely states, released from British suzerainty by the Indian Independence Act 1947. Using frank diplomacy, backed with the option and use of military force, Patel’s leadership persuaded almost every princely state. Often known as the “Iron Man of India” or “Bismarck of India”, he is also remembered as the “Patron Saint” of India’s civil servants for establishing modern all-India services.

Here, in this same city, the blood of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims mingled in the bloodbath of Jallianwala Bagh. I am grieved to think that things have come to such a pass that no Muslim can go about in Amritsar and no Hindu or Sikh can even think of living in Lahore. The butchery of innocent and defenceless men, women and children does not behove brave men... I am quite certain that India’s interest lies in getting all her men and women across the border and sending out all Muslims from East Punjab. I have come to you with a specific appeal. Pledge the safety of Muslim refugees crossing the city. Any obstacles or hindrances will only worsen the plight of our refugees who are already performing prodigious feats of endurance. If we have to fight, we must fight clean. Such a fight must await an appropriate time and conditions and you must be watchful in choosing your ground. To fight against the refugees is no fight at all. No laws of humanity or war among honourable men permit the murder of people who have sought shelter and protection. Let there be truce for three months in which both sides can exchange their refugees. This sort of truce is permitted even by laws of war. Let us take the initiative in breaking this vicious circle of attacks and counter-attacks. Hold your hands for a week and see what happens. Make way for the refugees with your own force of volunteers and let them deliver the refugees safely at our frontier

Diwali: Festival of Light Diwali also known as the “festival of lights”, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The festival is celebrated by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and lighting earthen lamps called ‘diyas’. People light fire-crackers, wear new clothes and eat homemade delecacies.

Diwali is the most important festival for Hindus around the globe. It is India’s most important holiday. The festival is calculated by the lunar Hindu calendar and falls on different days each year. It is a five day celebration which occurs on the fifteenth day of the Hindu month of Kartika (during October/November in the Gregorian calendar). The fourth day of Diwali is the Hindu New Year. Origin of Diwali Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival . However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali or ‘Deepawali.’ Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali , the dark goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha , the elephant-headed God, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped

in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana . Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers. www.wishesh.com

The Four Days

Legends behind Diwali

Each day of Diwali has its own tale, legend and myth to tell. The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya , the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi , the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and banished him to hell. Bali was allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the third day of Deepawali — Kartika Shudda Padyami that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj ) and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

The legends behind the festival are as varied as the manner of its celebration, but common to all of them is the theme of the triumph of good over evil. Everywhere Diwali symbolizes the lifting of spiritual darkness and ushers light. In due course of time, numerous historical incidents got connected with this festival. Various legends are attributed to this festival and the reasons for celebration differ in different regions of the country.

Significance of Lights & Firecrackers All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and a story to tell. The illumination of homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the rains. Tradition of Gambling The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva , and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. Diwali is associated with wealth and prosperity in many ways, and the festival of ‘ Dhanteras ‘ (‘dhan’ = wealth; ‘teras’ = 13th) is celebrated two days before the festival of lights.

Story of Rama and Sita: All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance In the north, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and the surrounding areas, Diwali is the day when King Rama`s coronation was celebrated in Ayodhya after his epic war with Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. Lord Rama was a great warrior King who was exiled by his father Dashratha, the King of Ayodhya, along with his wife Sita and his younger brother Lakshman, on his wife’s insistence. Lord Rama returned to his Kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, in which he put an end to the demon Ravana of Lanka, who was a great Pundit, highly learned but still evil dominated his mind. After this victory of Good over Evil, Rama returned to Ayodhya. In Ayodhya, the people welcomed them by lighting rows of clay lamps. So, it is an occasion in honor of Rama’s victory over Ravana; of Truth’s victory over Evil. Story of King Bali and Vamana Avatar(the Dwarf): The other story concerns King Bali, who was a generous ruler. But he was also very ambitious. Some of the Gods pleaded Vishnu to check King Bali’s power. Vishnu came to earth in the form of a Vamana(dwarf) dressed as priest. The dwarf approached King Bali and said “You are the ruler of the three worlds: the Earth, the world above the skies and the underworld. Would you give me the space that I could cover with three strides?” King Bali laughed. Surely a dwarf could not cover much ground, thought the King, who agreed to dwarf’s request. At this point, the dwarf changed into Vishnu and his three strides covered the Earth, the Skies and the whole Universe! King Bali was send to the underworld. As part of Diwali celebrations, some Hindus remember King Bali.

Mark Zuckerberg speaks Mandarin in Beijing

Mark Zuckerberg has stunned an audience in Beijing by conducting a 30-minute question and answer session in fluent Mandarin.

The Facebook chief executive was known to have been studying the language, having mentioned in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010 that he was embarking on the task. But little had been heard of his hobby since.

“We discussed connecting the world, Internet. org, innovation and the early days of Facebook. “Tsinghua is an amazing centre of learning and research and it has been inspiring to be with so many talented future Chinese leaders.”

Many assumed the rigours of running the $200 billion social network would have left him with little time to practice the notoriously challenging language.

Comments on his Facebook page ranged from “seriously impressive” to “so cool”. One person wrote: “I hope my mother doesn’t see this she’s going to be so disappointed in me.”

In the Q&A at Tsinghua University Mr Zuckerberg began by apologising. He told the audience of students and faculty members - in Mandarin - that his Chinese was “pretty terrible”. But it soon became clear he was being more than a little modest. Before long he was telling jokes in Mandarin. Mr Zuckerberg was pleased with his performance, later posting a video of the whole event on his Facebook page. He wrote: “I did my first ever public Q&A in Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing!

Mr Zuckerberg was asked by his host why he had learned Mandarin. He said - in Mandarin - that there were three reasons. The first was that his wife Priscilla Chan, who he married in 2012, is from a Chinese family. He asked his mother-in-law for her hand in marriage in Mandarin. The other reasons were that he liked Chinese culture, and he liked a challenge. Facebook has been banned in China since 2009 and Mr Zuckerberg’s efforts may go some way towards reversing that.

Kerry hosts first Diwali celebrations in US

US Secretary of State John Kerry hosted Diwali celebrations at the State Department for the first time as Diwali becomes an important marker in the American festival calendar. During the celebration Kerry said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US provided an “unforgettable chance to build on the already deep ties between America and India.”

“The prime minister’s visit was a moment when Indians and Americans could get a real sense of what our two nations are able to accomplish together by working together,” he said at the event on Thursday. Kerry and the Indian Ambassador to the US, S Jaishankar, together lighted a traditional Diwali oil lamp. Local Hindu Priest Narayanachar L Digalakote from the Sri Siva

Vishnu temple presided over the ceremonial lighting and draped Kerry with a traditional shawl.

Describing

India

as

“a

country of enormous energy and power,” Kerry said the two countries were working together in from fighting against terrorism to achieving greater progress by pushing back the boundaries of science and technology. India and the US had “worked hard to prove that we were, in fact, natural partners,”he said. “We are two optimistic nations who believe that history doesn’t shape us, but www.wishesh.com

that we have the power to shape history.” “And that spirit of hope and optimism is really at the centre of the Diwali celebration,” Kerry said. “It is an opportunity for us all, regardless of our own traditions, to renew a shared commitment to human dignity, compassion, and service,” he said. Special celebrations of varied faiths are celebrated in communities all across America and in India and in other countries, he noted. “It’s an indication of how our mutual commitment to helps to define and to strengthen our two democracies.” President Barack Obama and Modi had “a chance to celebrate

the shared values of religious tolerance and pluralism,” he said, when they together went to visit the memorial of Black American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Memorial, who was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. Kerry also hailed “the accomplishments of the many hundreds of thousands of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain Americans who live now all across our country in every community.” “Today, the South Asian diaspora is a pillar of every aspect of American society,” he said noting “South Asians sit in the executive suites of some of our country’s most successful companies, or at the very helm of all of them.”

15

“They are a driving force behind American leadership and science and innovation, and in the history of our nation,” Kerry said. “It is hard to find any group of Americans who have achieved more in such a relatively short period of time,” he said amid applause. In New York, Joe Crowley, Democratic co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, sent his “best wishes to all those celebrating Diwali, both here in the US and around the globe.” He also announced that the second annual Congressional Diwali celebration will be held November 19.

US firm fined for underpaying Indian workers US labour authorities have penalised a Silicon Valley company for “grossly underpaying” eight workers from India. California-based Electronics for Imaging paid the workers $1.21 (75p) per hour. They worked 122 hours in a week without overtime pay.

The company said it “unintentionally overlooked” US laws on wages and overtime. California’s minimum wage at the time was $8 per hour. Thousands of Indians work in Silicon Valley and many own start-ups there. Reports say that Electronics for Imaging, a printing technology firm, has to pay more than $43,000 (£26,798) in back wages and penalties after labour regulators discovered the violations.

www.wishesh.com

The eight workers were brought to the US on a special project, at the time when they helped the company move its headquarters from Foster City to Fremont. Reports say the firm paid the Indian workers the same wages they received in their normal jobs in the Indian city of Bangalore and continued to pay them in rupees. US laws require foreign workers to be paid at least the minimum wage, with overtime for working more than 40 hours a week.

“This is worse than anything that I ever saw in any of those Los Angeles sweatshops,” Michael Eastwood, assistant district director of Department of Labour, told the Associated Press news agency.

Islamic State militants now world’s richest: US

It earns $1 million a day alone by selling crude oil from fields captured when the group swept across Iraq and Syria earlier this year, said David Cohen, treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence. Because the group, also known as ISIS, has “amassed wealth at an unprecedented pace” from different sources than most terror groups, it presents a particular challenge to the US working to choke off money flows. “We have no silver bullet, no secret weapon to empty ISIS’s coffers overnight. This will be a sustained fight, and we are in the early stages,” Cohen said, outlining what he called a three-pronged effort. IS is now “considered the world’s wealthiest and most financially sophisticated terrorist organization,” said Marwan Muasher, vicepresident at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Unlike al-Qaida, IS does not attract most of its funds from deep-pocketed rich donors,

The Islamic State has become the world’s wealthiest terror group, earning tens of millions of dollars a month from illegal oil sales and ransoms, according to US experts.

often in Gulf countries, or from state sponsors. Yet “with the important exception of some state-sponsored terrorist organizations, ISIS is probably the best-funded terrorist organization we have confronted,” Cohen said, warning its revenue sources were “deep and diverse.” Oil sales alone from captured refineries are allowing the militants to produce some 50,000 barrels a day sold “at substantially discounted prices to a variety of middlemen, including from Turkey,” who then resell it. Oil has also been sold to Kurds in Iraq, and Cohen said the administration was looking carefully at the middlemen involved in the smuggling. “At some point there is someone in that chain of transactions who is involved in the legitimate or quasi-legitimate economy. They have a bank account. Their trucks may be insured,” he said. Even Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which is fighting IS as well as the moderate US-backed opposition, was buying oil from the www.wishesh.com

17

The group has also pocketed about $20 million this year from kidnappings, particularly of journalists and European hostages.

Washington is also working with its allies to adopt the hard line taken by the US, and refuse to pay ransoms to free kidnap victims. Much of the US focus has been on Gulf countries, which in the past have come under fire for allowing the financing of terror groups.

And it demands money from in cities and towns through extortion racket,” plunders sells off women and girls

local businesses “a sophisticated antiquities and as sex slaves.

Significant progress has been made in countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Cohen said, both nations he has visited in the push against IS.

US air strikes have begun impeding the militants’ ability to produce oil, and Turkish and Kurdish authorities have pledged to stop smuggling on their territory.

But in Qatar and Kuwait, seen in the past as “permissive jurisdictions for terrorist financing... there is more work to be done.”

Cohen vowed the US would hit hard against those found buying illegal oil. Sanctions would follow, he said, and it would not just be a question of cutting them off from the US banking system. “We can also make it very difficult for them to find a bank anywhere that will touch their money or process their transactions,” Cohen said.

Despite the group’s wealth, however, it still does not have enough money to pay for basic services to Iraqis in territory it has captured, and could face local opposition, Cohen said. “A terrorist organization’s financial strength turns on its ability to continue to tap into funding streams, its ability to use the funds that it has, and also its expenses,” he told reporters later at the White House.

Iraq had earmarked some $2 billion for the local services in the provinces now under IS’s control. The militants have nowhere near enough funds to meet the shortfall, Cohen said.

Doordarshan anchor sacked for mispronouncing Xi Jinping as “Eleven Jinping” The gaffe happened during a late night show on Wednesday. While anchoring the late night bulletin on DD News, an anchor mispronounced Chinese President Xi Jinping’s name as ‘Eleven’ Jinping, confusing Xi with the Roman numerical eleven. We think she hadn’t done her homework well and naturally the name didn’t register in her mind. The news anchor, a novice, was sacked following that. She was put on the show as the main anchors of DD refused to be a part of the late night broadcasts. President Xi Jinping, who is on a three-day visit bi-lateral visit to India, signed 12 key bilateral documents promising India investments worth $30 billion. This, however, isn’t the only time the media has

got his name wrong. Even the French media has goofed up “Xi” a couple of times in the past.

Jawahar Sircar, the CEO of Prasar Bharti, confirmed to Quartz that they have sacked the newsreader. “It’s true, we have sacked the concerned newsreader. We are putting systems in place to make sure such things don’t happen in future,” he said.

“It is an unpardonable mistake,” a senior official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity, saying the anchor was employed on a casual basis. “We have debarred her from news reading for a few months.”

Television bloopers aren’t anything new and most often tend to pass the headlines. But when you happen to bungle the name of a visiting head of state wrong, especially when you are country’s public broadcaster, embarrassment is inevitable.

Modi lauds journalists for support on Swachh Bharat In his first media outreach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed journalists at a Diwali Milan function at BJP headquarters in New Delhi and said he was trying to look for ways to deepen ties with the media. A d d r e s s i n g journalists, Modi said, “I’m trying to find ways to improve my connection with the media.” Talking about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Modi said

that over the past one month he had seen a lot of columns on cleanliness, a lot was being discussed on social media as well. “I want to thank the

“I am reading so many articles on clean India. Electronic and social media is also doing a comprehensive debate on it. This is a service to the nation. This is a good example of how the media can play a constructive role,” Modi said at the media meet. November, 2014 “Since independence, it was believed that the government would do everything. But media is encouraging people to work for the nation. There is now an environment where citizens are realising that all have to work together,” Modi said. He said he has had a close association with the media and that he wants to strengthen it. “When I interact with the media, I not only get information, but

I also get a vision,” Modi said. He said that he used to once help with the seating arrangement at media meets

was looking for ways to deepen his old ties with the media. Modi also wished journalists on the occasion of Diwali and Bhai Dooj. The function that is the first of its kind where Prime Minister Modi met journalists after assuming office, was attended by party president Amit Shah along with other senior leaders like Sushma Swaraj, Rajnath Singh and Prakash Javadekar.

Nirbhay will be backbone of ‘coldstart’: Experts Nirbhay, India’s first longrange subsonic cruise missile, which was test-fired on October 17, can be a gamechanger in India’s strategic calculus, defence analysts and strategic experts feel. Capable of flying at a treetop altitude for over 1,000 km, Nirbhay can carry out surgical strikes and thus back up India’s “cold start” doctrine that envisages limited, precise strikes across the border. The introduction of nuclear weapons in the subcontinent has virtually stalled a conventional Indian response to Pakistan’s crossborder terrorism. “India is confronted with the problem of developing a strategy to counter Pakistan’s ‘first-strike’ and continuing proxy war,” says Dr. Monika Chansoria, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies. She points out that Pakistan cites “India’s conventional military threat” to maintain its own offensive

strategic posture and India will have to develop a response to this. In this context, “cold start” has been put forward as an offensive doctrine by the Indian strategic establishment. Though “officially denied,” its presence

is widely acknowledged strategic circles.

In the event of an Indian offensive, a volley of missiles flying low can effectively take out key command and control centres, blunting the resistance to the advancing

armoured columns. “The successful indigenous development of Nirbhay cruise missile will fill a vital gap in the war-fighting capabilities of our armed forces,” Avinash Chander, Director-General, Defence Research and Development Organisation, said after the test launch on October 17. Defence analyst Rahul Bedi observes that Nirbhay will be a force multiplier to the inwaiting “cold start” doctrine, but the doctrine itself is a nonstarter as of now for lack of critical assets such as artillery, armour and helicopters. The Army has to fast-forward acquisition and induction of these platforms. In the short-term, experts believe that Nirbhay, along with its shorter-range supersonic sibling BrahMos, will form the backbone of the doctrine.

the property tycoon who built India’s first ‘smart’ city It was, by his own account, a chance encounter with a scion of the Gandhi political dynasty that turned former soldier Kushal Pal Singh into the man who built a city from nothing and made billions in the process. Singh was toppled from his spot as India’s richest property developer this week, when his company DLF Ltd was hit with an unprecedented three-year ban from capital markets, accused by the regulator of failing to disclose key information at the time of its record-breaking 2007 market listing. Investors wiped more than $1.3 billion off the indebted company’s market value after the decision. Village boy turned visionary developer, Singh may be largely unknown outside India. But as the man who built “boom city” Gurgaon and fostered the outsourcing industry - with a little help, he says, from ex-General Electric boss Jack Welch - he has been among the most influential Indian names of recent decades. His political links, to the Gandhi family in particular, have also placed him among the more controversial. To its cheerleaders, Gurgaon, the city he imagined and built 15 miles outside India’s capital Delhi, is a prototype of where young, upwardly mobile Indians want to live and work. The outsourcing boom has made the city India’s third-richest. “It is India’s first smart city,” said Rajeev Talwar, executive director at DLF. “Its infrastructure may be creaking ... but there is a new

part which supports a new kind of life.” To its detractors, though, Gurgaon is the epitome of the fervid real estate speculation and dysfunctional urban sprawl that threaten India’s cities as populations boom. Water and power are unreliable, social problems abound and private contractors have had to step in where the police have failed. Its population has ballooned by about three-quarters to 1.5 million people in the decade to 2011. Boom City It has been a difficult year for Singh, whose fate from the start has been closely tied to that of the Gandhi family. Haryana, the state neighbouring Delhi and including Gurgaon, has long been a stronghold for the family and the Congress party. After a decade in power Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi, was ousted in May’s general election by Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. Haryana’s voters threw out Congress in a state election this week and strongly backed the BJP, exit polls show. Results are due Sunday. “There are businesses that have benefited from managing their political connections, and real estate is one of them,” said an executive whose company works with DLF, but did not wish to be named

K P Singh because of the sensitivity of the issue. In Singh’s case, the link goes back decades. In his autobiography, Singh describes how in 1980 he accidentally met Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia’s husband and India’s prime minister from 1984 to 1989, when the latter was travelling to Gurgaon and had stopped for water to cool his car’s radiator. Singh, whose family property firm had been pushed out of the capital by strict development laws, says he shared his plan for the dry and desolate Gurgaon region, and his fate was sealed. The chance meeting served DLF well for several years during which Singh - even at 82, a sharp dresser with military bearing - amassed 3,500 acres of land in Gurgaon, some of it still undeveloped. “A salute to the old man to have at that time thought of putting together the entire site and not be tempted to gain by selling parcels of land to other developers,” said Anuj Puri, chairman and country head of Jones Lang LaSalle, a property consultancy that advises DLF. www.wishesh.com

Indian alphonso may be back in European Union markets Indian alphonso mangoes may be back insupermarkets in the European Union next summer, with the trading bloc expected to lift the ban imposed this year. While it is good news for exporters, the move is expected to push up prices in the local markets.

The permission to allow shipments will, however, come with the rider that exports should be routed through packing houses instead of being exported directly from the orchards. Sources told TOI that indications of a resumption of exports came after a recent visit by a delegation from the EU, which was in India to study the sanitary and phyto-sanitary standards. “We have explained to them that we have norms in place and we keep tabs on each mango that is packed into boxes that are sent to Europe or other markets,” said an official, adding that a similar practice for export of grapes is already in place. At the start of the last mango season, EU had banned the import of mangoes along with www.wishesh.com

eggplants, the taro plant, bitter gourd and snake gourd from India, saying authorities had found consignments infested with fruit flies. The move was seen as a retaliation to India’s decision to hold back shipments of wine and scotch whiskey that entered the market without meeting the labeling requirements. Some consignments of chocolates were also stopped as they were found to contain vegetable fat, which in some cases was close to 70%. Although the government had threatened legal action at WTO, it refrained from any such move as experts cautioned that it may not be of much help. India has, however, raised the issue at WTO’s sanitary and phyto-sanitary committee, which looks into such restrictions, along with difficulties it is facing in

exporting mangoes to the US. Separately, the resistance against India’s labeling requirements has come down as several European manufacturers are now exporting drinks that carry the contents. Similarly, it has now emerged that only 1% of the shipments were stopped at ports for not complying with Indian standards, prompting European manufacturers to lower their opposition.

Indian Government’s E-visa scheme likely to be launched by October end Government’s gift to tourists — electronic visa — is likely to be launched by October-end. There are about 30 countries including the US, Japan and South Korea where the facility will be extended first while Germany, Israel and Russia are under consideration.

Sources said countries already being given visa-on-arrival including New Zealand, Luxembourg, Finland and Singapore besides Japan, South Korea and the US will be able to apply for electronic travel authorization (ETA) or e-visa. There are at least a couple of countries from the African continent that are also in consideration. Sources said Germany, Israel and Russia were also being actively considered. Once implemented, ETA will allow foreign travelers to apply for a visa and receive an online confirmation within three to five working days. ETA will be available for a 30-day period from the date of the tourist’s arrival in India. The government plans to establish a separate website to extend the facility to foreigners intending to visit India as tourists. To get the visa, they would need to apply through the designated website along with the required fees. The e-visa scheme received PMO nod in June and is expected to be implemented in time for the country’s tourist season. The countries that are unlikely to be on the list include Saarc nations and countries that are on “prior reference’’ list which include Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Afghanistan.

This is the first time that electronic visas will be implemented in the country. Officials said plans were afoot to include all 109 countries in a phased manner. The government has been encouraged by the good response to the visa on arrival scheme to extend ETA to the 12 countries. Between January and September 2014, 19,290 visas on arrival were issued compared to 13,859 during the same time last year, reflecting an increase of 39.2%. The countries that already have visa on arrival scheme include Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Finland, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Luxembourg. Sponsor

Canada’s express entry immigration linked to the employment With the new ‘express entry’ skilled immigration system that Canada is set to launch from January 2015, applicants from India who have the right educational qualifications, skills and work experience may have to wait only months rather than years to move to Canada. For those in senior management positions, with experience in various fields and international exposure, immigration to Canada will very likely become a faster process, considering that it will be linked to the employment needs of the country. The new immigration programme, which is similar to Australia’s SkillSelect and New Zealand’s point-based system, is moving away from “passive processing to active recruitment”. Canada’s immigration and citizenship minister Chris Alexander recently explained at conference in Regina, Canada, that rather than the present first-come, firstserved basis, express entry was focused on the job market in Canada. “We have been stuck in the 1970s, maybe even the 1960s, in immigration, receiving applications in a mechanical, robotic way from whoever happened to apply,” Alexander said at the HR conference. But from next year, as in the Australia and New Zealand skilled immigration categories where applicants are invited to apply based on certain selection criteria, express entry will also follow the ‘expression of interest’ model. Earlier, during a visit to Delhi, Alexander had described the new system as a game changer that would help some of the skilled successful applicants in the economic and business immigrant categories to get their papers processed in as little time as six months. Under the express entry system, applicants will be able to submit an ‘expression of interest’ to the Canadian government; their resume and details will be entered into a database. Employers seeking foreign skilled workers will have access to such information on the database, allowing them to select suitable candidates. If a Canadian employer cannot find Canadians to do the job after a labour market impact assessment, they can go online to the Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC) www.wishesh.com

database of applicants and look for the likes of welders, project managers etc in India or anywhere in the world and make a job offer. Those with job offers will get priority when it comes to invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada. The express entry system will cover all of Canada’s existing skilled immigration programmes including skilled worker programme, skilled trades programme and the Canadian experience class. Not everyone, though, is happy about express entry since, once it kicks in, those candidates who are not chosen after their profiles have been on the database for some time will be removed. The idea behind the scheme, according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, is to “allow the government to select the best candidates who are most likely to succeed in Canada rather than those who happen to be first in line”. A recent study released by the CIC showed that new immigrants were apprehensive about the new system. The respondents in the study, conducted by research company Ipsos Reid, felt that the government should first ensure that those skilled immigrants already in Canada without jobs be given support in finding suitable employment. Immigration experts, meanwhile, are waiting for more details on the system once it is rolled out. In India, the interest among skilled Indians in moving to Canada is very high with over 33,000 immigrating in 2013. Of the total number, 55% were in the economic and business categories and the rest in the family reunification category.

he word batik actually means ‘wax writing’. Batik, is the way of decorating fabric by using a manual wax resist dyeing process. Traditional Batik process is known to be used in many countries like Indonesia, Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and India. The process varies slightly depending on the country. Here I am going to talk about the Indian Batik.

he history of Indian batik can be traced as far back as 2000 years. Infact, this art of printing on fabrics originated in India. Indians are known to use resist method of printing designs on cotton fabrics long before any other nation had even tried it. Initially wax and even rice starch were used for printing on fabrics.

The waxed areas keep their original color and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and un-dyed areas makes thepattern. Mehndi in Indain Marriages Signficance of

Indian marriages are known for their many rituals. The beauty of Indian weddings comes forth in the numerous traditions that are associated with the special celebration. Indian weddings are incomplete without dance, music and lots of laughter. Furthermore, Indian weddings are not a one day ceremony. Pre-wedding ceremonies begin before the wedding and can sometimes be a week long celebration.

Beliefs associated with mehndi

It is a common belief that the darker the color the mehndi leaves on the hands on a bride, the more will she be loved by her husband and mother-in-law. However, the significance of applying mehndi during weddings is not restricted just to sentiments and beliefs. Although these beliefs make the application of mehndi a much anticipated and charming tradition, the actual reason is of much deeper significance, which is sometimes forgotten in the present day.

Core significance

Besides lending color to the hands, mehndi is a very powerful medicinal herb. Weddings are stressful, and often, the stress causes headaches and fevers. As the wedding day approaches, the excitement mixed with

nervous anticipation can take its toll on the bride and groom. Application of mehndi can prevent too much stress because it cools the body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense. This is the reason why mehndi is applied on the hands and feet, which house nerve endings in the body. Also, being a highly antiseptic agent, mehndi can protect the couple from viral diseases. Such diseases are totally undesirable just before the wedding and this medicinal herb can lend a strong shield. Any small cuts, burns or scratches that the couple might sustain during the course of so many rituals and customs can be healed easily with the application of mehndi. It improves blood circulation in the body and enhances general health. The initial practice of applying mehndi in ancient times began in order to protect the couple and keep them healthy. Mehndi that is applied during Indian weddings

is not just a plain paste of mehndi powder and water. Eucalyptus oil, a bit of clove oil and a few drops of lemon are added. These oils not only help in darkening the color of mehndi on the body, but also enhance the benefits of mehndi and make the paste highly medicinal. The best part is that the smell, the beautiful rich color and the health benefits that mehndi lends act as a powerful aphrodisiac. Also, since the color and smell remain for days, it boosts the romance in the initial days of wedding. Islamic belief is also very strong regarding mehndi and its application during weddings is a very significant part of Islamic weddings as well. According to holy Islamic scriptures, the Prophet always administered mehndi application and as a drink to people suffering from diseases. So, it corresponds to the Hindu ideology of using mehndi before weddings. Mehndikirasmis held a couple of days before the nikah ceremony and is celebrated with a lot of pomp and honor.

Mehndi

Over the centuries, mehndi has become so ingrained in Indian tradition that today the mehndi ceremony is one of the major celebrations before the wedding. A family member or mehndi expert applies mehndi on the palms and feet of the bride. Elaborate designs are applied on the hands with a cone filled with mehndi. While the mehndi is being applied, other members of the family play the traditional dhol and dance to its beats. Every female member of family gets mehndi done on her hands and feet. The entire mood of a mehndi ceremony is extremely festive. The mehndi ceremony takes place at the bride’s place and usually, it is held a couple of days prior to the wedding. It is a night ceremony which is accompanied with relatives, music, laughter, food and a lot of fun. The mehndi ceremony for the groom takes place separately at his home. The bride and groom do not usually get decked up very elaborately at the time of the mehndi application, and their ensembles are very simple. Once the mehndi for the bride is done, www.wishesh.com

Indian Culture

29

the female relatives of the bride, especially her sisters, visit the groom’s ceremony. It is great fun as the would-be sister-in-laws play pranks on their future brother-in-law and try to get some money from him as a tradition! It is a very happy occasion for both the families. Traditional songs and music characterize the ceremony from the beginning to the end.

Present trends in mehndi Although times have changed and a lot of new inclusions have been made in Indian weddings, the significance of the mehndi ceremony has grown in stature. Many families bring in DJs to play songs and celebrations that go on until late in the night. If something has changed about the ceremony, it is the designs and patterns. While only intricate Indian designs were traditionally applied in the past, brides today are experimenting with Arabic designs and Indo-Arabic designs and mixing shimmer pastes along with the traditional mehndi paste. Semi precious stones are also embedded in the design. It is traditional to write the name of the groom on the bride’s palm. In some regions, this is also a small ritual after the wedding. The groom is made to search for his name, which is usually smartly written so as not be readily visible. The mehndi ceremony is a reflection of the rich Indian culture, bringing together the knowledge of medicinal herbs with many lovely sentiments and beliefs. The result is a ceremony filled with fun and joy and the perfect precursor to the auspicious wedding day.

Indian Dance Dance Forms of India BharataNatyam Bharatanatyam is the most popular of Indian dances and belongs to the South Indian state of Tamilnadu. Its antiquity is well established. In the past it was practised ad performed in the temples by a class of dancers known as the devadasis. It was a part of the religious rituals and has a long and hoary past. The kings and the princely courts patronised the temples, as well as the various traditions sustaining the dance form. The salient features of Bharatanatyam are movements conceived in space mostly either along straight lines or triangles. In terms of geometrical designs, the dancer appears to weave a series of triangles besides several geometrical patterns. In nritta (pure dance) to the chosen time cycle and a raga (melody), a dancer executes patterns that reveal the architectonic beauty of the

form with a series of dance units called jathis or teermanams. The torso is used as a unit, the legs are in a semi-plie form and the stance achieves the basic posture called araimandi. The nritta numbers include Alarippu, Jatiswaram and Tillana, which are abstract items not conveying and specific meaning except that of joyous abandon with the dancer creating variegated forms of staggering visual beauty. In nritya, a dancer performs to a poem, creating a parallel kinetic poetry in movement, registering subtle expressions on the face and the entire body reacts to the emotions, evoking sentiments in the spectator for relish - the rasa. The numbers are varnam, which has expressions as well as pure dance; padams, javalis and shlokas. The accompanying music is classical Carnatic. The themes are from Indian mythology, the epics and the Puranas.

chakiarkoothu This dance form is believed to have been introduced to Kerala by the early Aryan immigrants & is performed only by the members of the Chakiar caste. A highly orthodox type of entertainment, it can be staged inside temples only & witnessed by the Hindus of the higher castes. The theatre is known as Koothambalam.

The story is recited in a quasidramatic style with emphasis on eloquent declarations with appropriately suggestive facial expressions & hand gestures. The only accompaniments are the cymbals & the drum known as the mizhavu, made of copper with a narrow mouth on which is stretched a piece of parchment.

November, 2014 Chhau With origins shrouded in mystery, the Chhau dancer communicates inner emotions and themes through cadences of body flexions, movements and kinetic suggestions. The word Chhau is interpreted differently by scholars. ‘Shadow’, ‘Disguise’ and ‘Image’ are the most common interpretations due to the extensive use of masks in this dance form. The martial movements of Chhau have led to another interpretation of the word as meaning ‘to attack stealthily’ or ‘to hunt’. Three styles of Chhau exist born from the three different regions of Seraikella (Bihar), Purulia (West Bengal), and Mayurbhanj (Orissa). Martial movements, strong rhythmic statements and dynamic use of space are characteristic of Chhau. Seraikella Chhau flourished under royal patronage. Its vigorous martial character made it suitable only for male dancers. The princes were not only patrons but also dancers, teachers and mask-making experts. The Seraikella masks are similar to those used in the Noh dance of Japan and the Wayang Wong of Java. Purulia Chhau uses masks which is a highly developed

craft in the region. The barren land with its tribal inhabitants and multi-layered influences of Vedic literature, Hinduism and martial folklore have all combined to shape the Purulia Chhau dances which have only one message - the triumph of good over evil. Mayurbhanj Chhau has highly developed movements, no masks and a more chiselled vocabulary than the other two Chhau styles. Like Seraikella Chhau, it had also thrived under royal patronage and is considered a link between the earthy Indian dance movements and the flying, springing elevations of Western dance. Unlike other Indian Classical dance forms, vocal music in Chhau hardly exists! Instrumental music and a variety of drums like the Dhol, Dhumba, Nagara, Dhansa and Chadchadi provide the accompaniment. Combining folk, tribal and martial traditions and yet covering the three aspects of Nritta, Nritya and Natya as well as the Tandava and Lasya aspects of classical dance, the

Chhau dances are complex combinations of Folk and Classical motifs.

Kathakali Kathakali means a story play or a dance drama. Katha means story. Belonging to the South-Western coastal state of Kerala, Kathakali is primarily a dance drama form and is extremely colourful with billowing costumes, flowing scarves, ornaments and crowns. The dancers use a specific type of symbolic makeup to portray various roles which are charactertypes rather than individual characters. Various qualities, human, godlike, demonic, etc., are all represented through fantastic make-up and costumes. The world of Kathakali is peopled by noble heroes and demons locked in battle, with truth winning over untruth, good over evil. The stories from the two epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, as well as the Puranas constitute the themes of the Kathakali dance dramas.

November, 2014

The macro and micro movements of the face, the movements of the eyebrows, the eyeballs, the cheeks, the nose and the chin are minutely worked out and various

emotions are registered in a flash by a Kathakali actordancer. Often men play the female roles, though of late women have taken to Kathakali.

Kathak Prevalent in the North as a classical dance form, Kathak has a long history. Nurtured in the holy precincts of the Hindu temples, Kathak has over the centuries attained refinement and enriched itself with various hues and embellishments. Kathak means a story teller and it developed as a dance form in which a solo dancer tells and interprets stories from mythology. In nritya, the expressional numbers called gats are danced by delicate glances of the eye and by using the art of mime. Themes from life are taken like enacting simple chores of carrying water from the well or walking gracefully, covering a face with a veil and looking through it in a tantalising manner at the lover. Also, to the lyrics, expressions are shown evoking the rasa or emotion in the spectators, who, if the musical traditions are shared along with the songs, enjoy it by

The pure dance element in Kathakali is limited to kalasams, decorative dance movements alternating with an expressional passage where the actor impersonates a character, miming to the liberetto sung by the musician. A cylindrical drum called chenda, a drum called maddalam held horizontally, cymbals and a gong form the musical accompaniment, and two vocalists render the songs. Using typical music known as Sopanam, Kathakali creates a world of its own. The most striking feature of Kathakali is its overwhelming dramatic quality. But its characters never speak. It is danced to the musical compositions, involving dialogues, narration and continuity. It employs the lexicon of a highly developed hand-gesture language which enhances the facial expressions and unfolds the text of the drama.

expressing their appreciation with a round of applause. The themes of Krishna, Radha, Shiva, Parvati and mythological characters find a prominent place in the Kathak dancer’s repertoire. Nowadays, experiments are being carried out with group choreography exploring the dance form. Both men and women perform Kathak which is also used to present dance dramas of historical tales and contemporary events.

Practised and preserved by the Chakyar community in Kerala, Koodiyattam is the oldest surviving link with ancient Sanskrit theatre. A precursor of Kathakali drama, Koodiyattam has several conventions which reflect the aesthetic conventions of the Natyashastra. The stylised mode of acting, the same character playing different roles, the use of the spoken word akin to chanting, stories within stories, flash backs, improvisations, eye expressions (netrabhinaya), an extensive gesture vocabulary or ‘hastas’, body movements (angika abhinaya) and facial expressions (mukhajabhinaya), the use of Sanskrit by the main character and Malayalam by

the court jester or vidushaka who comments, satirizes and ridicules the protagonists... these are the salient features of Koodiyattam. Performances are traditionally held in the Koothambalam which are special theatres attached to temples. The Sanskrit play selected for the performance usually takes over several days. Female dancers called Nangiars deliver the invocatory songs and also participate. The use of the tirashila or curtain, different colours for the face to depict characters and elaborate ornaments are all similar to Kathakali. The mizhavu is a special drum used as an accompaniment for Koodiyattam performances.

The repertoire consists of Sanskrit dramas like Ascharyachudamani of Shaktibadra, Subhadradhananjeyan of Kulasekara Varman, Abhisekha Nataka and Swapnavasavadatta of Bhasa, Kalyana Saugandhikam of Mahendra Vikrama and Bhagavadajjukiyam of Bodhayana which are the popular favourites. With disciplined and dedicated performers like Ammanur Madhava Chakyar, Kocchukuttan Chakyar and Kitangur Kuttappan Chakyar, this ancient classical form has a growing legion of students and afficionados in India and elsewhere.

Yakshagana This belongs to Karnataka & has a rural origin. It is an admixture of dance & drama. Its heart lies in Gana meaning music. It is about 400 years old. The language is Kannada & the themes are based on Hindu Epics. The costumes are almost akin to the Kathakali ones & the style seems to have drawn inspiration from Kathakali. As prescribed in the Natya Sastra, it has the Suthra Dhara (conductor) & the vidushaka (the Jester). www.wishesh.com

Indian Tradition

Kuchipudi Kuchipudi, like Kathakali is also a dance-drama tradition and derives its name from the vilage of Kuchipudi in the Southern State of Andra Pradesh. In recent years, it has evolved as a solo dance for the concert platform and is performed by women, though like Kathakali it was formerly the preserve of men. The female roles were enacted by men and even today, the tradition boasts of gifted male dancers enacting female roles with such consummate artistry that hardly anyone would notice them as male dancers.

Lord Krishna. In expressional numbers a dancer sometimes chooses to enact the role of Satyabhama, the proud and self-assured queen of Lord Krishna, from the dancedrama Bhama Kalapam. She goes through various stages of love. When in separation from Lord Krishna, she recalls the happy days of union and pines for him. At last they are reunited when she sends him a letter.

The movements in Kuchipudi are quicksilver and scintillating, rounded and fleetfooted. Performed to classical Carnatic music, it shares many common elements with Bharatanatyam. In its solo exxposition Kuchipudi nritta numbers include jatiswaram and tillana whereas in nritya it has several lyrical compositions reflecting the desire of a devotee to merge with God - symbolically the union of the soul with the super soul. The songs are mimed with alluring expressions, swift looks and fleeting emotions evoking the rasa. A special number in the Kuchipudi repertoire is called tarangam, in which a dancer balances herself on the rim of a brass plate and executes steps to the beat of a drum. At times she places a pot full of water on her head and dances on the brass plate. The song accompanying this number is from the well known Krishna Leela Tarangini, a text which recounts the life and events of

One more number from the Kuchipudi repertoire that deserves mention is Krishna Shabdam, in which a milkmaid invites Krishna for a rendezvous in myriads of ways giving full scope for the dancer to display the charms of a woman. www.wishesh.com

November, 2014 Manipuri Manipuri dances originate from the North Eastern state of Manipur and derives its name from its native state. Intensely devotional in mood, the Manipuri dances are a part of the daily life of the Manipuri people. Essentially presented as a group dance with gorgeous, colourful costumes and gentle, swaying petal-soft movements, Manipuri dances create a hypnotic impact. The dances are influenced by the religious movement of Vaishnavism, the worship of Lord Vishnu, and have flowered in exquisite Rasalila performances, the favourite dance in a circle by Krishna with his milkmaids. Various types of Rasalilas are performed on special occasions and festivals. Besides Rasalilas, there are other dances called Natasankirtana, in which a group of men play cymbals and dance in a circle or in two rows singing praises of God. In Pung Cholom, the dancers play upon pung, the drum, and dance while playing the intricate time cycles, executing somersaults and breathtaking acrobatic feats. In group dances like Lai Haraoba, the merry-making

for the gods, the dancers perform various steps and weave patterns, involving various choreographic compositions. From the corpus of Manipuri dances, one sees on the contemporary stage solo, duet and group performances. The music is typical of the region and is influenced by the kirtan school of Bengal due to the influence of Vaishnavism. Rasalila, Lai Haraoba, Choloms, Pung Cholom, Natasankirtana, Khubak Ishai and other Manipuri dances share both nritta and nritya aspects and are edited judiciously for the concert platform to suit the urban audience. However, to enjoy Manipuri, one should see the dances in their natural setting. Gossamer veils, cylindrical mirrored skirts and ornaments dazzle the

audiences with their colourful costumes which create a dream-like effect.

Kunjan Nambiar evolved it & brought out the social conditions of his time, the distinctions of class & the weakness & whims of the rich & the great. Odissi Odissi has been revived in the past fifty years and can be considered as the oldest classical Indian dance on the basis of archival evidence. The form belongs to the East Indian state of Orissa. Odissi has a close association with the temples and its striking feature is its intimate relationship with temple sculpture. Tribhanga, the three-body bend characterises this dance form. It has a vast range of sculptural body movements which gives one the illusion of the sculptures coming to life. In nritta the numbers consist of batu nritya, pallavi and mokhya. In batu nritya the dancer strikes poses holding various instruments like veena, flute, cymbals and drums and the choreography of this number reveals the imagination of the choreographer-gurus. Pallavi means to elaborate, and a dancer performs pure dance to a chosen time cycle and a musical raga (melody). Various body postures similar to temple sculptures are woven in this number. In mokhya, before the dance concludes, a dancer employs various dance units creating arresting visuals. In nritya, the songs from the celebrated

Gita Govinda of poet Jayadeva written in the 12th century A.D., are used by dancers for expressional numbers. The exquisite Sanskrit poetry and the sculptural movements to the typical Odissi music almost cast a spell on the spectators. Songs of other Oriya poets are also danced with subtle expressions, replete with emotions. In its revival period Odissi has received enthusiastic support from the young exponents and often one finds Bharatanatyam dancers also mastering the Odissi technique and performing both the dance forms though while doing so, they maintain the clearcut differences in the execution of the movements. In recent years, group choreographic presentations and dance dramas are also attempted in order to bring out the full glory and sculptural wealth of Odissi which is truly a visually fascinating performance style.

The info about Bharatanatyam, Chhau, Kathak, Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohinattam, Odissi have been provided from “Narthaki - A web directory of Classical Indian Dances

Interview

Bang Bang! is an action thriller directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Fox Star Studios. The film, which was released on October 2, is an official remake of the Hollywood film “Knight and Day”. The Hindi film stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles, which was performed by Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz respectively in the original movie. We bring a short interview of Katrina Kaif, where she talks about Bang Bang! and her co-star Hrithik. Q. How different is your role from the role played by Cameroon Diaz (leading lady) in Knight and Day? Katrina: This film is an official remake of Knight and Day because the makers were inspired from the film but it is just the germ or a seed of that film. We have done it in a proper way and taken only the best from the original. It is not the same film as Knight and Day. There are some similar scenes as Knight and Day like the bike sequence. There are a lot of changes made in the script by Sidharth and this is a story about a criminal or a person whom the world thinks is a criminal. The story line is the same but the presentation is different. The name of my character in Bang Bang is Harleen who works at a bank in Shimla. Q. How challenging was it to play the role? Katrina: I didn’t work on the character at all as it was a very general character of a small town girl in a glamorous avatar. My character is very simple in Bang Bang. There is a lot of difference in between mine and Hrithik’s character. My character is awe struck by Hrithik when they meet for the first time – more like love at first sight. Q. Do you think you will be able to break the jinx that actress can’t be a part of action film? Katrina: I just think everyone is doing the kind of work that they like and what comes to them. Everyone knows that people reject many scripts and someone else does that. When I signed Dhoom 3, I remember I was sitting in my car and all I wanted to do that time is I wanted to dance and Dhoom was the best space to do that. Q. Your all time favorite song featuring you? Katrina- All the songs which I have danced to I have really liked. But If I have to choose one, the title track of Bang Bang is just fabulous and along with that Chikni Chameli which was another great dance number. Q. There have been just 4 to 5 flops in your career so how do maintain such a great track record ? Katrina: Nobody has the answer of why and how but since I am in the position I am happy with it and I feel it I have a good script sense. I have always tried to follow my script sense, sometimes I have been wrong but I have been happy with the choices I have made. Q. There have been reports that you don’t want to promote Bang Bang on Bigg Boss? Katrina: The marketing team decides where we are supposed to go and promote. So if a marketing team asks me to go to Bigg Boss I would love to go there. I don’t think a film with such a huge scale has any need to promote the film on Bigg Boss or have city tours.

Performance

Hrithik Roshan is undoubtedly the best actor and he steals the show with his superb body language. Hrithik once again proved that he is the Indian superhero and king of action movies. His dance movements in the film should have a special mention. Katrina Kaif looks gorgeous in the film and the extra benefit is you get to see her performing huge action sequences in the film. Katrina is very beautiful and especially in the romantic scenes with Hrithik, her expressions are top notch. All the actors have done justice to their roles. The story of the movie is very simple and reminds us of old James Bond films of everyone chasing only one. You don’t get to know who is the police and who is the spy. The screenplay has been quite simple. The drama of the film has been written quite slowly and makes the movie so boring. The photography has been fantabulous capturing each and every rupee spent. The production values and the music are the main assets of Bang Bang. The director has succeeded in capturing some good action sequences but the narration is a downfall. The drama and screenplay shoud have been tight and interesting.

Final Word

Bang Bang has good action sequences which are shown in the trailer. The chemistry between Hrithik and Katrina has been flavoured with all the ingredients. The boring drama and a bad screenplay makes the film fall down. Bang Bang is just an OK film. Not worth on big screen. www.wishesh.com

Yoga for kids

T

oday fast-paced life affects kids as well. Children are stressed with the pressures of studies, extra-curricular activities, peer pressure and sports. To parents these may not appear stressful, but it definitely impacts kids. Yoga can be effective for kids and positive way to de-stress.

Y

oga instructor Priya Pankaj says, “Yoga for kids is all about learning and exploring with joy. Yoga asanas and pranayama (breathing techniques) calm their mind and help kids to improve their concentration and perform day-to-day activities better. It also works as a good break from their regular indoor activities which makes them hyper and restless. We have also customised certain asanas and worked on breathing patterns to train kids who have a learning disability.

November, 2014 Yoga And Stress We may not realise it, but children do get affected by the speed with which their parents expect them to lead their life. A lot of events in a child’s life may appear to be normal to grown-ups but are stressors, like a transfer of parents from one place to another, or shifting of schools and making new friends. These things leave a deep impact on their little heads. Psychologist Seema Hingorrany says, “These days, we are seeing a rise in young children with complaints of stress, anxiety, emotional disturbances and low concentration. The reasons can be academic pressure, efficiency to cope with parental pressures, juggling between too many activities and an improper diet routine. Many children also come from backgrounds where parents are just about to separate or their divorce is in the pipeline, which does impact the child psychologically. Dysfunctional families too cause a lot of turmoil and conflict in a child’s mind, leading to mental health concerns. Yoga often helps to combat these pressures and induce the feel-good hormone, endorphin.” Yoga And Discipline By doing yoga, kids can be aware and disciplined. Aarti Kapur Singh, a mother of a six-and-a-half-year-old, says, “My son has been learning yoga in school for about two

years. He is not only more active but I have also noticed that he is less hyper on the days he does yoga. Sometimes, when he is in the park and his friends aren’t around, he is happy to be just by himself and practice the asanas. Not just that, if ever I tell him that my back or knee or shoulder is paining, he will promptly start demonstrating an asana that I should do and it does help. My son was prone to colic. But I have noticed that ever since he has started doing padmasana, his digestion is much better and he eats without fuss.” Kids who are hyperactive need to do a lot of physical activity and yoga can be a bright way to help them move in a positive direction. It’s a great way to gain awareness of their bodies and surroundings. Enhances Confidence In Kids Yoga enhances confidence in kids. It teaches awareness about the present moment. Kids learn to value time and become more aware in life. Yoga teaches them to be focused. The lessons that kids learn in yoga classes makes them more confident about their potential and perform better academically. Asanas help them to connect with their inner self. “Yoga is like a journey of a lifetime and the earlier you take it up, the better it is,” adds Rajnish Mishra.

positive self-image is a basic ingredient for a happy, successful and confident life. Our selfimage dictates how we react emotionally, socially and spiritually to the different situations and people in our lives. Though most parents know that a positive self-image is an important part of the growth process, very few make a conscious effort to inculcate the same in their children.

It’s only words “The quickest way to make someone feel special is with loving and encouraging words. During India’s Panchatantra Era, women would speak positive words of success, triumph and achievements, even to their unborn children in their wombs. I guess that’s why there were scholars in that era. Positive words to a child shape his future, confidence and self-worth,” says singer, actor and now a budding motivational speaker, Raageshwari Loomba. EQ is a key factor A positive self-image leads to self-esteem, which is a must to achieve success. It is a key ingredient for happiness, which develops into a formidable weapon later in life, helping us deal effectively with its ups and downs. “Today, besides a child’s intelligence quotient,

we also talk about his or her emotional quotient. To develop a positive self-image, a child needs to feel good about himself or herself and feel successful,” says a leading psychiatrist.

Let your child be Another psychiatrist, says, “For a child to develop a positive self-image, the most important thing for parents to do is to just let them be! Parents need to understand that ‘being’ is more important than ‘doing’. Respect and trust are very important in life. You should speak to your child on an equal level, and never make him or her feel that he or she is alone.”

There is actually no limit to praising your child. You should encourage him/her for every little thing. Accept your child What is the difference between a rich child and a poor child. A poor child, by the age of two, lags behind a rich kid vis-a-vis his or her ability to talk and understand. The gap widens by high school and by college, it’s a gulf, because the poor kid never hears words like success, money and power. But the tides turn where compassion is concerned. The poor kid is more mature and considerate, while the rich kid lags behind where empathy is concerned, because he never heard those words consistently. Welcome to the land of surprises Being a fine arts graduate, hobby photographer, and a travel enthusiast, I am always fascinated and inspired by people, culture, art, music, architecture, and other art forms. I had watched a few documentaries and programs on television about the making of the Burj Al-Arab, the Palm Jumeirah and of course, the Burj Khalifa. The sheer size, engineering, and architectural brilliance of these places whet my appetite to visit and see them first-hand. And so I began to plan my trip to Dubai. I booked my hotel, selected a tour operator, and worked out my itinerary down to the last detail. The big day finally arrived and I was about to land at the Dubai International airport after 3 hours of a comfortable flight. I was filled with anticipation as I watched, through my airplane window, the orange sunset envelop the city of Dubai, slowly

DUBAI

turning it into a matrix of lights. My flight touched the runway and came to a halt at the international terminal 3 building gate. Airports of every major tourist city act as important tourist spots. The swanky new building of Terminal 3 doesn’t look like an airport at first glance. It looks more like a giant shopping complex, speckled with luxury fashion brands, gold souks, souvenirs shops, eating joints, and lots more. This place has everything for transit and regular passengers alike. One of the most noticeable art installations were the date and palm trees which could be found throughout the building, in different styles and at different sections. The flooring around these trees is made of carpets which resembled the pattern formation on desert sand. This was my first surprise.

Welcome to the world of sand, dates, palms, and gold!

Dubai International Airport terminal building shopping area – more like a mall than an airport terminal

After fulfilling the immigration formalities, I took a taxi to my hotel. While on the drive, I turned my attention to the vividly lit Dubai roads, city skyline, buildings, and roadside shops. It was a short trip of 25 minutes from the airport to my hotel, which was in the Bur Dubai area.

Walkthrough of Heritage Dubai– Deira, Al Bastakiya, and Bur Dubai

After a short drive, we reached an old heritage site in an area called Deira. This the northern part of Dubai creek area, which takes you back in time and allows you to imagine the city’s evolution from a small fishing site to a prominent port, to one of the foremost tourist destinations in the world

Old Heritage establishment at Bur Dubai near the creek

I woke up bright and early the next day and got ready to begin my city tour. Our local tour guide was from Pakistan. He was waiting for the tour group in his spacious Land Cruiser. Full of excitement and enthusiasm, Ahmed introducing himself and started by sharing factual information about Dubai while we drove to our first destination. Dubai is the second largest Emirate, after Abu Dhabi, out of the seven Emirates which collectively form the UAE (United Arab Emirates). Each Emirate has its own king and these kings are under one ruler, the king of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa II bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. One of the most interesting facts about Dubai that Ahmed shared with us was that there is no Income Tax or Sales tax liability for Dubai residents. Interesting isn’t it! We could see luxury cars everywhere. Ahmed told us that these cars can easily be bought for a very low price in the city. Fuel prices are quite low in comparison to other Middle Eastern countries. Dubai is indeed a Mecca for auto buffs.

Abras (small ferry boats) at the Bur Dubai creek area

The Dubai creek area has a unique old-world character to it with an array of historical establishments, peculiar alleyways, and marketplaces full of clothes, gold, and spices. At the Dubai creek, you can board the Abras (small ferries, a cheaper mode of water transport) or the Dhows, in case if you want to get a glimpse of the old and new Dubai through its inland waterway at night. A dhow cruise is a must on every traveler’s itinerary. It is advisable that you book your cruise during day time to avoid a last minute rush. A dhow cruise offers you both open-air and air-conditioned cabin seating arrangements with buffet dinner on board. The cool breeze, Bedouin folk tunes and the beautifully lit buildings skirting the creek, transport you to an altogether different Another fact that Ahmed shared was that Dubai world, one you won’t want to leave. gets just around 13 cm of rain every year and yet the Dubai Roads are full of greenery, sprinkled with flower beds, palm trees and lush grass. This was my second surprise.

Roadside Landscaping and greenery is a common sight in Dubai

While cruising through the city lanes, I noticed a very peculiar structure on the top of almost all the old and some new buildings. These were small rectangular structures with hollow spaces. I was curious and asked our guide about them. He told me that these structures are wind towers and in the old days they were used to keep the house cool in the scorching heat of the desert sun. Now, the entire city is air-conditioned. There are even air-conditioned bus stops making it comfortable for tourists to enjoy the city even in the blistering summers. This was my third surprise.

November, 2014 the Persian Gulf coastline and houses some of the best-known commercial establishments in the area. The entire stretch of this road is lined with tall, magnificent, and glitzy skyscrapers which compete amongst each other for height, appearance, and stature. Collectively these skyscrapers form an impressive skyline for Dubai’s Downtown area. As per the traffic rules, people are not allowed to stop their cars at the side of the road, so I had to satisfy the photographer in me by taking pictures from the car and through the sunroof. In fact, it proved to be quite an adventure. While I was busy taking pictures, our guide informed us that soon we will be entering the Dubai Mall.

The wind towers atop a building

Dubai Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in the world. It houses some 1,200 retail outlets and is one of the most popular shopping destinations among local and foreign tourists. The mall also houses the Dubai Skating Rink, the world’s largest in-house aquarium and some famous Gold Souks among others. There is also a multistorey waterfall inside the mall with diving sculptures.

Sheikh Zayed Road Skyscrapers

After getting a flavor of Dubai’s past, I started my second day with a lot of excitement as I was about to visit the three most iconic buildings that have changed Dubai’s skyline forever. Our guide took us through the city’s most busy and commercially active area known as Sheikh Zayed Road. This is supposedly one of the longest roads in the entire UAE. It runs along

After visiting all these major attractions, it was now time to step out of the mall and walk towards the first iconic structure, which for me was one of the primary reasons for this trip. I was filled with intense excitement as we walked towards the mall exit. Outside the mall, there was an open courtyard which was dotted with huge artificial ponds and at the end of the courtyard stood the tall, giant steel and glass structure known as the Burj Khalifa. Finally, the sight that I had waited to see for so long! I was awestruck and couldn’t take my eyes off it. It was so tall and huge that I had to walk half a kilometer away to get a complete view of the structure. The sunlight glinting off the glass and steel facade made the building look even more dazzling. This was my fifth surprise.

The Dubai Skating Rink is another popular attraction. I wanted to try skating, but the fear of slipping on ice and breaking my back held me back. I contented myself watching people on their ice skates, gracefully gliding past me. Seeing an ice skating rink in this desert city was my fourth surprise.

Inside the Burj Khalifa, we went through passages and corridors on whose walls were some great multimedia displays about the making of this iconic structure. We reached the elevator which would take us to the observation deck which is located on the 124th floor. In less than 40 seconds and accompanied by a spirited music and light display inside the elevator, we were at the observation deck. The view was spectacular and I felt on top of the world. Our group was lucky as it was a clear sunny day and we were able to get a bird’s eye view of the entire city. People say that on a clear day, one can easily see till Abu Dhabi! Outside view of Jumeirah Madinat

Desert Odyssey – Dune bashing, tented camps, and belly dancing

Bird’s eye view of Dubai Mall as seen from Burj Khalifa

Driving some four miles on the straight road parallel to this beach, we reached another iconic structure, the Burj Al-Arab luxury hotel. The only one of its type, a seven-star hotel, it is always booked in advance throughout the year and is not open to general tourist till you have special permission to enter. I was disappointed to know that I would not be able to go inside this hotel complex. Sensing this, our guide told me that he would take me to another interesting place nearby, Jumeirah Madinat, a five-star heritage resort and hotel complex. This was my sixth surprise. Jumeirah Madinat is a culture, art, and food hub. It resembles an Arab town and transports you into the old world. Crisscrossing water alleys, Arab architecture and Abras gives us the impression that we are in the Venice of the Middle East. This place has a lot of hustle and bustle during the evening, and is must-visit for tourists who want to explore local handicrafts, food, and artifacts. One can always stay at this heritage five-star resort but it will cost a bomb.

Desert Safari – on our way to the desert camp

No Dubai itinerary is complete without experiencing dune bashing at the outskirts of the city. After a one-hour evening drive, we entered the desert area, the starting point of a four-hour long Desert Safari. Our cab driver stopped for a while to lower the tires for safe sand driving. Travelers can opt for customized desert tours as dune bashing is not advisable for people with motion sickness. Initially I was slightly scared, but soon I experienced an adrenaline rush as we went up and down on high and low sand dunes at fast speed and took sharp turns. The drivers for dune bashing are properly trained and they have to get a special license to drive in the sand, so it’s quite safe. Finally, after a roller-coaster ride on the desert sand, we proceeded to our desert camp where we were about to spend an evening of music, entertainment, camel rides, and buffet dinner. And of course, you can always stop midway to click some interesting sunset and sand dune pictures.

It was an entertaining evening and started with a Tanoura dance performance. The dance involves a male artist pirouetting for a long time, the LED lights on his costumes added further drama to the dance. This was my seventh surprise. After the Tanoura dance performance, the belly dancer arrived in her shimmering costume with her face covered, and a sword in her hand. When she started her performance, there was loud cheering from the crowd. After her initial performance, she invited a few people from the crowd whose bellies were almost four times what she had, and asked them to perform with her. There was a huge applause, followed by plenty of good-natured laughing and hooting from the crowd at the volunteers’ attempts at belly dancing.

Dubai Travel Tips It is always advisable to book your hotel online and avail some great online discounts and offers. Try to find a hotel that is close to Public Transport facilities like a metro station or a bus station. Public transport is the most preferred and economical means to travel and go around Dubai. Also remember to find out if there are a few good restaurants or eating joints near your hotel. In case if you want to independently enjoy the city at your own pace, then private transport is advisable. This way you can customize your tour and can cover places of your choice. www.wishesh.com

Google doodle to celebrate Mangalyaan’s 1 month in Mars orbit

on September 24. The mission has been one of the biggest scientific achievements for India, which has placed ISRO, India’s space agency, among a select group of four space agencies that were successful in sending a probe to Mars orbit.

I

ndia’s Mars mission Mangalyaan has completed one month in orbit of the red planet. Google marked the event by putting up a special doodle on its home page for India on Thursday night. Mangalyaan Google Doodle is static, unlike a few dynamic ones puts up by Google occassionally, and shows India’s Mars mission in outer space. The red planet can be seen in the background. The doodle will be visible only in India. The Google page carries an illustrated image, often seen in space-related images used in school notebooks during the late 80s and 90s. Mangalyaan was launched into space on November 5, 2013 and entered the Mars orbit

Besides India, three other countries - the US, Europe and Russia – have been able to send a spacecraft to Mars. And India is the first Asian country to send a probe to the red planet. Also India was succeessful in its first attempt, a feat not accomplished by the other three country. After entering into the Mars orbit, Mangalyaan sent back several pictures of the red planet to the control mission at ISRO. One of images sent shows Mars in its entirety. The picture has been widely shared and used all over the world. Taking inspiration from NASA in the US which runs a twitter account, India’s Mars mission also has a Twitter account - @MarsOrbiter through which all mission related news are shared with the world. The most recent tweet from the account read: “Phew! Experience of a lifetime. Watched the #MarsComet #SidingSpring whizzing past the planet. I’m in my orbit, safe and sound.” @MarsOrbiter has more than 1,68,000 followers. Several countries have launched their Mars missions till now. Out of the 51 attempts made by various counrties, only 21 have been successful.

Humble turmeric may treat neurological disorders The findings suggest that aromatic (ar-) turmerone could be a future drug candidate for treating neurological disorders such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine. “Our findings on aromatic turmerone take us one step closer to achieving this goal,” said lead study author Adele Rueger from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Julich, Germany. The study looked at the effects of aromatic (ar-) turmerone on endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC), the stem cells found within adult brains. To test the effects of ar-turmerone on NSC, researchers injected adult rats with arturmerone.

Eat Nuts to Control Blood Sugar & Fat Nuts contain unsaturated fats, protein and a range of vitamins and minerals that lower cholesterol, inflammation and insulin resistance. A recent study suggests that you should include at least 50 grams of almonds, cashews, chestnuts, walnuts or pistachios in your diet to control blood fats (triglycerides) and sugars - two of the five markers for metabolic syndrome. The study was published in the journal BMJ Open. Tree nuts tend to healthier than others. Family of tree nuts includes almonds, Brazil

They found that the subventricular zone (SVZ) and the hippocampus expanded in the brains of rats injected with ar-turmerone. “The SVZ and hippocampus are the two sites in adult mammalian brains where neurogenesis, the growth of neurons, is known to occur,” Rueger explained. Ar-turmerone is the lesser-studied of two major bioactive compounds found in turmeric. The other compound is curcumin which is well known for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. The research appeared in the open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy.

nuts, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, hickory nuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts amongst others. A person develops metabolic syndrome if he or she has three of the following risk factors - low levels of “good” cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and extra weight around the waist. By including at least 50 grams of almonds, cashews, chestnuts, walnuts or pistachios in your diet, blood fats (triglycerides) and sugars can be controlled effectively. “Eating tree nuts is good for lowering risk for heart disease and other health problems such as diabetes and strokes,” said John Sievenpiper, a physician at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. However, the greatest benefit can be reaped only if they are consumed daily. www.wishesh.com

How exercise keeps depression at bay

73

E

xercise training induces changes in skeletal muscle that can purge the blood of a substance that accumulates during stress, and is harmful to the brain, the study on mice showed. “Skeletal muscle appears to have a detoxification effect that, when activated, can protect the brain from insults and related mental illness,” said principal investigator Jorge Ruas from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. It was known that the protein PGC-1I1 (pronounced PGC-1alpha1) increases in skeletal muscle with exercise, and mediates the beneficial muscle conditioning in connection with physical activity. In this study researchers used a genetically modified mouse with high levels of PGC-1I1 in skeletal muscle that shows many characteristics of well-trained muscles (even without exercising). After five weeks of mild stress, normal mice had developed depressive behaviour, whereas the genetically modified mice (with well-trained muscle characteristics) had no depressive symptoms. “Well-trained muscle produces an enzyme that purges the body of harmful substances. So in this context the muscle’s function is reminiscent of that of the kidney or the liver,” Ruas explained. The researchers discovered that mice with higher levels of PGC-1I1 in muscle also had higher levels of enzymes called KAT. KATs convert a substance formed during stress (kynurenine) into kynurenic acid, a substance that is not able to pass from the blood to the brain. The study is forthcoming in the journal Cell.

The study found a “modest decrease” in blood fats known as triglycerides and blood sugars among people who added tree nuts to their diets compared to those who ate a control diet. To reach this conclusion, Sievenpiper screened 2,000 articles published in peerreviewed journals and found 49 randomised control trials with 2,000 participants. Sievenpiper says that the largest reductions in triglycerides and blood glucose were seen when tree nuts replaced refined carbohydrates rather than saturated fats. He also added that there was no adverse impact on the other risk factors for metabolic syndrome or weight gain, even though nuts are high in calories. “Fifty grams of nuts can be easily integrated into a diet as a snack or as a substitute for animal fats or refined carbohydrates,” Sievenpiper www.wishesh.com

noted.

Why One Should Follow Vastu? Vaastu considered the interplay of various forces of nature involving the five elements of earth, water, wind, fire and ether and strives to maintain equilibrium as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human beings but every living being on earth. Thus they influence our deeds, luck, behavior and other basics of life.

Vastu Shastra is the sublime elucidation of your surrounding and their influence on your life. Vastu literally means “ house or Dwelling Place and its principles establish to create a harmony between the fine elements viz. Earth, Sky, Fire, Water and Air in the environment.

Vastushastra is an ancient building science which covers the philosophy and theory of Architectural works to construct any building and as well as living style of people. Vastushastra is based on various natural energies, which are available free cost in atmosphere like:

shastra Vastu Purush is god of building science, hence let us pray. Thus Vastu is rational, as it is scientific, it is permanent as it is based on directions and directions are unchangeable. It is beneficial as it is a bridge between man, material and nature and above all it is practical, as it is very simple to follow. Build your house according to the guidelines provided by vaastu and lead a healthy and happy life.

Solar Energy from Sun. Lunar Energy from Moon Earth Energy Sky Energy Electric Energy Magnetic Energy Thermal Energy Wind Energy Light Energy Cosmic Energy

Utilization of such energies gives us pleasure peace, prosperity and money etc in our life. Now a days we are having National Building code, which gives us certain regulations to construct building, whereas in past our ancestors were having Vastu Shastra as a religious & rigourics code. As per

Vastu Shastra unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology, it can also be said as

Vastu can be used for every room, every house, every temple, every shop industry, town planning, tour, cities and even for earth. Vastu can be used for micro as well as for macro level. Every creature on earth starts its life with sunrise as it performs day & night. Hence there is much importance of sun in every one life. It gives ultra violet rays in morning and infra red rays in evening which one basic need to reduce / generate bio-chemical germs,

an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and will secure from things going wrong.

N2/ Oxygen / CO2 on earth. Sun indicates light (illumination) will power, generosity, solar system, luck or fate, mobility and in body. It rules over bone, eye, heart, spinalcord, blood circulation and soul etc. Hence east direction is auspicious; it belongs to lord Indra. North is considered auspicious since magnetic lines of forced moves from North to South, thus origin of all the life. There are three forces in action to create harmony. Wind, water and fire or, vaayu, jal and Agni. If these forces are kept in their appropriate places, then there will be no disturbance. But if water is put in place of fire and wind in place of water or in any other combination, the forces will start acting accordingly and create disharmony and unpeacefulness.

Authenticity Of Vastu The biggest Proof of vaastushastra can be found during the time of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Even in the cities of Mohanjodaro and Harappa the application of vaastushastra can be seen. If you consider it a mythological fact then here are the most unbelievable examples that Vastu is a science and one must follow it wholeheartedly. Geographical situation of an area affects the nature thus the vastu for every place changes. We see that some countries are much advanced, developed and prosperous while others are much backward. For e.g. Japan, existence of deep water in North and the East is considered most auspicious according to vastu shastra. The eastern side of Japan is widely spread and open. Thus Japan gets full benefit of the rays of the sun. This is why Japan is rich and prosperous. There is sea in Southeast and south of Japan, which is a place for Fire, this is why it suffered the attack of atom bombs explosion and earthquake. If we take Africa as a continent, we all know the northeastern corner of this continent is interjected. Northwest portion is projected, southeast and south have unlimited water, these all conditions are inauspicious according to vastu, that’s why African countries are backward, uneducated, poor. But on the contrary, in the north of this continent, there exists Mediterranean Sea, which is favorable according to vastu. In the eastern part, river Nile flows and that’s why civilization

www.wishesh.com

Since the science goes far back to the times of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna there are many interesting mythological stories concerning the origin of Vaastupurush (the deity).

developed in Egypt and now Egypt got name and honour for its world famous pyramids. Why to go far, lets discuss our own INDIA, we know we have the Himalayas in the North and Northeast side of our country which is against vastu, thus there is lot of poverty in our country. There is water in Southwest and southeast side of our nation, thus we have to face the attacks of foreign empires. One thing that makes India famous is that we have our slope towards east, which is a very favourable and auspicious sign.

Apart from the geographical conditions and different nations, if we take examples within our country, you will be surprised to see. Have you ever thought that why tajmahal is so famous that it has become the 7th wonder of the earth and why exactly similar structure called”chandbibi ka makbara” situated in Aurangabad is not yet known to the people. Why is so that the Tirupati balaji is world famous and other temples situated in the same regions are still waiting for the pilgrims to come…. This is all vastu , they are famous because they are made according to vastu. Thus to achieve the happiness, peace and prosperity, one must follow the principles of vastu.

Over the years, based on the knowledge in the Vedas, repeated studies on a number of buildings, offices, temples, houses, apartments have shown a positive correlation between the application of Vaastu principles and success. It can be extensively applied to various edifices natural and man made land masses, temples, factories, homes, office buildings and corporate headquarters. The location and construction of the famous Balaji Temple, the most prosperous in India, are all according to Vaastu: Water tank in the Northeast, Kitchen in Southeast, and the Lord in Southwest facing East and so on. Studies conducted on cities like New York, London, Singapore, Hong Kong etc have shown they are according Vaastu principles. The most famous prosperous industrial houses have also been studied; The Tata head quarters in Mumbai, Akbarallys the most successful retail store in India, factories of FACOR a highly successful industry in A.P. and many others have been found to be according to Vaastu.

Vaastu is an empirical science. Source: vaastu-shastra.com

Jyotirlinga Sthalams In Hinduism, the Absolute is known as the Brahman and is formless and without attributes. But the human being has form and attributes so we need some form of the Absolute on which we can concentrate. The lingam which is a rounded, upright stone is used as a symbol of Shiva. Worship of the lingam is one of the most important aspects of the worship of Shiva. The word lingam actually means a sign or characteristic. So the Shiva lingam is a sign of Shiva and helps us to remember him in his formless aspect. The Shiva lingam is also considered to be the divine phallus, containing within it the seed of the universe. From it all life is created. Together with the yoni or seat on which it rests and which corresponds to the female vulva, the yoni-lingam represents the union of man and woman, Shiva and Shakti, the cosmic Spirit in union

with the cosmic Prakriti, which brings everything into existence. There are thousands of lingams all over India but some of them have a special importance. The most important of these are called jyotirlingas and they are twelve in number. As given in the sloka, their names are Somnatha, Mallikarjuna, Mahakala, Omkara, Kedara, Bhimshankara. Vishvanatha, Tryambaka, Vaidynatha, Nagesha, Rameswara and Ghushnesha. Most of these are supposed to be self formed or sprouted out of their own will. A few have been installed by human hands. Every Shiva worshipper dreams of doing a pilgrimage to all these twelve jyotirlingas at least once in his lifetime.

Somanath TEMPLE Somanath is situated in the south coast of Saurashtra, near Veraval in Gujarat. The original temple structure had been destroyed several times by attack of invaders. The great freedom fighter, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, played a vital role in the renovation of the temple & there is a sculpture of Sardar Patel at the entrance to the temple. The temple was once upon a time decorated with gold and silver, but was all looted by invaders. But the temple that remains

in stone is still a splendorous beauty. Sthapathis from various parts of India played a role in the renovation process, revealing their skills, adding to the sculptural glory of the temple. The lord here is called Somanathar and Someshwar. This Siva Lingam that was formed spontaneously is one among the 12 Jothirlingams. The tank, where Chandra Bhagavan took his holy dips during penance is called Somagundam.

Sri Mallikarjunam TEMPLE This sthalam is situated in Andhra Pradesh. It has been constructed in the traditional Dravidian style. This sthalam, along with Thiruppudaimarudur near Ambasamudram and Thiruvidaimarudur is considered an Arjuna Shetram.

at this sthalam. The presiding deities are Mallikarjunar and Brahmaramba. Lord Nandikeswarar in the form of a mountain is considered to be holding up Lord Siva. Mallikarjunam has been mentioned in the Thevaram as Paruppadam. The lord is hence known as Paruppadanayagan & the devi Paruppadanayagi. The theertham is known as Paruppadatheertham.

Ujjain TEMPLE Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh is one of the seven Moksha Sthalams. It is of historical importance, for it is the place of Vikramaditya & of poet Kalidasa. Ujjain is famous for the two Kali temples - Kali Devi who gave darshan to king Vikramaditya & a temple for the Mahakali who gave darshan to Kalidasa. The theertam opposite the Mahakaleshwarar temple is known as Koditheertham & it is said that the colour of the waters of this theertham keeps changing. The Moola lingam is very small & is located underground. The lingam in the top level is called Ongareshwarar.

The Kali Devi who gave darshan to Vikramaditya is known by the name Harasiddhi Matha. There once lived a brahmin in Avanti, who had four sons, who were great devotees of Lord Siva. Dushanan, a demon was giving trouble, disturbing all good & religious activities. The brahmins from all over the land gathered with the four sons & performed pooja to Lord Siva. The spot where they had taken mud to make the Lingam, had become a huge pond. When Dushanan came to disturb their pooja, Lord Siva rose from this pond as Mahakaleshwarar & destoryed Dushanan. On the

request of the brahmins, Lord Siva gave darshan to devotees at this sthalam, one of the Jyotir Linga sthalams.

Omkareshwar TEMPLE

Omkareshwar Temple Omkaareshwar, Madhya Pradesh

The Jyotir Lingam split into two, and there are two Siva lingams, Omkareswarar & Amaleshwarar (Amareshwarar).

Omkareshwar is situated on the Mandhata hills in Madhya Pradesh, known in ancient times as Shivpuri. The temple dates back to the Krita Yuga. River Narmada flows here around the Mandhata hill in the form of an Om (Omkaram).Mandhata was a great Emperor of the Ishvaku clan who ruled this land. He did great penance in this land & there is an ashram called Mandhata ashram here. It is said that once, sage Naradar during his visit to the Vindyas, sang the praise of mount Meru to Mount Vindhya. On hearing this, Mount Vindhya prayed to Lord Siva to gain in importance. Lord Siva blessed him & appeared

here as Omkareshwarar & Amaleshwarar and gave the boon of grwoing, but without hindering Siva devotees.. But the Vindhyas did not stop growing, and even obstructed the sun and the moon. Sage Agasthyar subdued its growth by saying it should not grow till he gets back there. He never went back & hence the growth was arrested. The Omkareshawar temple is built in the North Inidan style of architecture, with high spires. Devotees consider worship to Panchamuga Ganesha, to be very auspicious. There is a shrine for Annapoorani. Siva Lingas of various sizes are sold in great numbers in this place.

Vaidyanatham TEMPLE

The temple structure has a great amount of woodwork. The main sabha mandapam has several huge (wide as well as tall) pillars. There are twenty two other temples in the temple complex. The top of the Siva Lingam is slightly bent. It is said that once

Ravana, the king of Lanka, prayed to Lord Siva to make his capital of Lanka invincible. After severe penance, he received the Aathma Lingam from Siva. Unable to carry the huge Lingam, Lord Siva made the Lingam into two halves & placed it in a kavadi.

Bhimashankaram TEMPLE

Bhimashankaram Temple Bhimashankar, Maharashtra

This temple in the Nagara style is an old and not a very large structure. The jyotir Lingam is situated on top of the Sahyadri hill temple. Lord Siva is considered to be taking rest here after the Trpurantaka samharam. The sweat drops of Lord Siva were converted as steam & is running as Bhimarati. New structures have been added. There are two idols of Nandideva. One idol is old, while the other is of fairly recent addition. There is a theertham & a well behind the temple structure.

The Bhimashankarar Lingam measures around one and a half feet & quite narrow. The Goddess is worshipped as Kamalaja. Shivaji, the Maratha ruler had made rich endowments for the maintenance of the temple. The moola lingam is at a lower level.

Rameswaram TEMPLE This shrine is located at the extreme south eastern point of the Indian peninsula, in Tamilnadu. The sethu bridge was constructed to link this land to Lanka for the Varnarams to reach Lanka. This island temple resembles the Panchajanya (Vishnu’s conch) and like the Tamil letter ‘OM’. The jyotirlingam was worshipped by Lord Rama to atone the sin of killing Ravana. Hanuman flew to bring the Linga from Kailasa, for

Lord Rama to wroship. As it was getting late, Rama worshipped the Lingam that was made of sand by Sita Devi. This Lingam worshipped by Lord Rama is known as Ramanathar. When Hanuman returned he was disappointed that his Lord had not used the Lingam that he had brought. Lord Rama pacified Hanuman & named this Lingam Kasi Viswanathar. Devotees have to worship Kasi Viswanathar before worshipping Ramanathar.

Nageswara TEMPLE

Nagesam Temple Nageshwar, Gujarat

The enraged devotees carried him and left him on the southside. To their astonishment, they found that the Linga was now facing South with the Gomugam facing East.

Nageshwar is located near Dwaraka in Gujarat, on the way to Beti Dwaraka. There once lived a rakshasa called Daruka, who was extremely cruel and tortured the good ones. But yet he was a great devotee of Lord Siva. While sailing with his goods, a Siva devotee, Supriya who was a merchant reached the Darukavanam, where Daruka lived with his wife Daruki. Daruka asked Supriya to teach him the path of devotion to Siva, the norms of performing pooja and penance. Fearing that Daruka would use any additional powers gained by such penance, to bad use, Supriya refused to guide him. The enraged Daruka began to torture Supriya. Supriya

however was staunch is his faith in the Lord and was unmoved by any torture. Lord Siva was pleased and appeared and killed the demon Daruka. Daruki, Daruka’s wife, now started giving even more trouble than her husband. Siva vanquished her too and gave darshan to his devotees at this place as Nageshwar. The Sivalingam is facing South, with the Gomugam facing East. There is a story for this position. A devotee by name Naamdev was singing bhajans in front of the Lord. Other devotees asked him to stand aside and not hide the Lord. To this Naamdev asked them to suggest one direction in which the Lord does not exist, so that he can stand there.

Kasi Viswanathar TEMPLE Kasi is amongst the holy spots for visit by the Hindus in Benares in Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that a visit to Kasi ensures liberation & hence pious Hindus seek a visit during their lifetime. This is the location of the Benares Hindu University, the place of learning of several aspects of Hindu culture. The Lord himself has declared this spot as his Royal residence. Goddess Parvathi’s mother felt ashamed that her son-inlaw had no decent dwelling. To please Parvathi Devi, Siva asked Nikumbha to provide him with a dwelling place at Kasi.

On the request of Nikumbha, Aunikumbha a brahmin made Divodas construct a temple for the Lord here. The pleased Lord granted boons to all his devotees. But Divodas was not blessed with a son. The angered Divodas demolished the structure. Nikubha cursed that the area would be devoid of people. When the place was emptied Lord Siva once again took residence here permanently. The Lord along with Parvathi Devi once again started blessing his devotees with wonderful boons

which is about five feet by four feet. Lord Siva in the form of jyotirlingam is worshipped here as Lord Kedareshwar. It is believed that the jotirlingam is actually the rump of the bull, which was the form that Lord Siva assumed, when the Pandavas tried to reach him to atone the sins of the Kurukshetra war. Since it was not time designated for humans to worship the Lord here, Lord Siva tried to go away in the form of a bull. It is believed that temple structure that exists till date was actually the one constructed by the Pandavas.

Kusumeswara TEMPLE This Jyotir Lingam exists at Devagiri near Ellora. The Lord is known by several names Kusumeswarar, Ghushmeswara, Grushmeswara, Grishneswara.

Kusmesam Temple Kusmeswara, Maharashtra

This Jyotir Lingam is considered to exist in two places, one at Devagiri near Ellora & the other at the Kailasa temple at Ellora.

There once lived a pious brahmin & his wife. He was a great devotee of Siva. He was not blessed with a son. At the persuasion of his family, he got married to Kusuma, in order to give him a son. Kusuma was an even greater devotee of Lord Siva. Everyday she would make one Siva Linga, worship it and then immerse it in the temple tank. Soon she was blessed with boy baby. The first wife was seeting with jealousy & ill treated Kusuma. Putting all her

faith in the Lord, Kusuma bore all the sufferings humbly. When the boy grew older, they planned his wedding. The jealous first wife, killed the boy with an axe. Kusuma was deeply grieved, yet did not stop her daily worship of Lord Siva. She continued to make the Lingam, worshipped & immersed it in the tank. To the surprise of one and all, her son rose out of the water one day, coming back to life. Lord Siva apperaed before them & blessed them. He declared that he would give darshan to devotees in his Jyotir Linga swarupam at the same spot where Kusuma immersed the Lingams.

Sarita Devi suspended over Asian Games row

Taking serious note of boxer L Sarita Devi’s decision to refuse the bronze medal during the Incheon Asian Games medals ceremony, the world governing body for the sport, AIBA, on Wednesday provisionally barred the 29-year-old Manipuri from competing in future competitions. The AIBA also barred the chief national coach, Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, foreign coach BI Fernandez and India’s chef-de-mission at the Incheon Games, Adille J Sumariwalla, from taking part in AIBA competitions until further notice. The AIBA’s decision to suspend the two senior coaches is likely to hit the sport in the country hard, but it is unlikely to have an effect on Sumariwalla, who is the president of the Athletics Federation of India and has nothing to do with running boxing affairs. In a statement put up on its website, the world governing body for the sport said, “The AIBA executive committee bureau decided today to provisionally suspend Laisham Sarita Devi, her coaches (Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mai Dhayal) as well as Adille J Sumariwalla, chef-de-mission

(India), who were all present at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games, and not to allow any of them to participate at all levels of AIBA competitions, events and meetings until further notice. “This case has been sent for review by the AIBA disciplinary commission, and it means that Sarita Devi, the above mentioned coaches as well as Sumariwalla will not be allowed to participate in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, Jeju 2014.” Sarita marked her protest against a controversial semifinal decision of the judges, by refusing to wear the medal around her neck during the medals ceremony. She then walked up to the South Korean boxer, silver-medallist Ji-Na Park, and handed over the medal to her in protest against the ‘biased’ decision. The entire episode didn’t go down well with the AIBA technical delegate at Incheon, David B Francis, who wrote in his report that the outburst was pre-planned. In his report submitted to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on the day of the incident Francis said, “The whole incident looked like a wellplanned scenario by her (Sarita) and her team, www.wishesh.com

November, 2014 and it is regretful to watch a boxer refuse the medal regardless of what happened in the competition. In this regard, as the technical delegate, I had to request OCA to review this incident, so any boxer or athlete in other sports will not follow in her footsteps by respecting the spirit of fair-play and sportsmanship of the Olympic Movement.” Though the Indian team had submitted a protest letter, it was rejected by Francis

because, as per the rules, protests are only allowed against the referees’ decisions and not against the judges. After the episode, Sarita also wrote an apology letter to AIBA. But the world body decided to suspend the boxer as well as the coaches. “We have received the suspension notice through Boxing India. We have been given a sevenday time period to file a reply,” said Sandhu. “Hopefully the matter will be resolved.”

Dhoni buys Ranchi franchise of Hockey India League

After motorsports and football, Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has now lent his support to Indian hockey by becoming the owner of the Ranchi franchise of the Hockey India League (HIL). Dhoni bought the team along with Sahara India Pariwar, who already is the owner of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards side in the HIL. The new Ranchi franchise will be known as ‘Ranchi Rays’ from third edition of HHIL to be held in January-February next year. Dhoni, a proud son of the city, himself was present on the occasion and unveiled the www.wishesh.com

team logo and jersey at a posh city hotel here. The previous Ranchi franchise known as Ranchi Rhinos, who were the inaugural champions of HHIL, was scrapped following a distrust between previous owners Patel-PS Group and Uniexcel Group and league organisers Hockey India (HI). As part of the arrangement, Dhoni is the principal owner of the new Ranchi franchise and Sahara are expected to provide logistical support to the team. Besides cricket, Dhoni already has invested in two other sports -- Mahi Racing and recently became the co-owner of Indian Super League side Chennayin FC.

Pankaj Advani clinch his 11th world title in Billiards

King of Indian cue sports Pankaj Advani added yet another jewel to his glowing crown, outplaying former champion Peter Gilchrist in the 150 up points format World Billiards Championship final and pocket his 11th world title on Friday. Advani, 29, conquered Singapore cueist Gilchrist 6-2 in a high quality finals of the shorter format of billiards. While Advani had lost to Gilchrist in the league stage 3-2, the Indian seemed determined to reverse the outcome in the most crucial match of the tournament. Gilchrist was off to a flying start registering a 145 unfinished and securing the first frame. However, Advani responded with a 127 in the second to even the score. Gilchrist surged ahead to 2-1 but that was the last frame he was going to win in the final.

After Frame 3, it was the Advani show. The next two frames saw the Indian score heavily with two unfinished breaks of 108 and 150 to go into the interval with a slender 3-2 lead. On return from the mid-session break, Advani was in demolition mode and won the next 3 frames to lift his eleventh world title. Advani now is the holder of three different world titles in 2014 - the IBSF World 6-Red Snooker title, the World Team Billiards title and now the World Billiards Championship (point format), an unprecedented record in itself. With the time format starting on Saturday, Advani said, “The job is only half done. I have to now focus on the longer format and try for a double. I have a match at noon tomorrow so celebrations will have to wait, but no complaints.”

“I’m on 11th heaven! I returned to India to focus on this very event and it has paid off. Gilchrist was the most dangerous competitor of the tournament and in a dream final I am happy with the way I performed,”

Schumacher will need years to recover

A French doctor treating stricken former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher said on Thursday that the German ace was making progress, but will need years to recover. Jean-Francois Payen also praised Schumacher’s wife Corinna for the devotion she has shown to the racing driver since his devastating ski accident in December, in which he suffered life-threatening brain injuries. “I have noticed some progress but I would say we will have to give him time,” Payen, who treated Schumacher at the Grenoble hospital where Schumacher was taken after the accident, told RTL radio. “It is like for other patients. We are in a time scale

of one to three years, so you need patience.” After being in a coma for six months, Schumacher is now at his home at Gland in Switzerland and Payen said he still sees the 45-year-old at a hospital in Lausanne and at his home. “It is to see how he progresses and then tell his wife and his children what changes I have observed,” the doctor said. “He is in very favourable conditions. His wife is surrounded by excellent advice and has put everything needed in place so that he can advance.” The doctor said that Corinna Schumacher had played a key role in her husband’s progress.

“It is someone very linked to Michael, but who has a lucidity and a desire to make him advance which is an extraordinary point.” Payen said that “for years she will do this same work. She is a very good person.”

When Sadhana Becomes Successful Question: After years of doing sadhana, I still feel I might not be getting anywhere. What to do?

Sadhguru: It doesn’t matter how many years of sadhana you do, you will not get anywhere. Not that you might not, you will not. Because the idea of doing sadhana is not to go somewhere. The idea of

doing sadhana is to come to a state where you can simply be here – to understand and know that what is here is everywhere, what is not here is nowhere. Getting beyond the need to go somewhere, that is sadhana, because in fact, there is nowhere to go. There is only here, and there is only now. The rest is all in your head. Sadhana is to bring you to a state where at least for some period of time in the day, just sitting is good enough. If you live, you are here and now, if you die, you are still here and now. You cannot go anywhere. There is nowhere to go.

Sadhana is a device. It is a method to bring you to a certain level of maturity where the need to go somewhere is gone. That is why people who are steeped in sadhana are not moving anywhere. If you travel around the world, you will still not know whether the world is round or flat, forget about knowing the intricacies of life. But if you are truly here, everything that is worth knowing is right here, because you cannot perceive anything on the outside. It doesn’t matter if you sit here or in the Himalayas or Africa or the United States or South Pole or North Pole. Maybe certain atmospheres are supportive, certain atmospheres are not supportive, that is a different thing – but essentially, you can only experience what happens within you. So, wherever you go, only this is there. You know, these mountains here are called Velliangiri. That means “White Mountain.” You can make them the Himalayas – that is what it means. We also call them “Kailash of the South.” If you sit here long enough or involved enough, they will become the Kailash; you don’t need to make the journey. You can only experience what happens within you. You cannot experience what happens in the mountain, you cannot experience what happens in the sky, you cannot experience what happens anywhere. You can sit here, look at someone, and experience love. You can close your eyes, just think about someone, and experience love, isn’t it? You can either stimulate it from outside or simulate it from inside, both are possible. Either you are on “push-start” or “self-start.” Either you are a current machine or a past machine. You look at the moon, you look at the earth, you close your eyes, you open your eyes – still what is happening within you is all that is happening to you – nothing more, nothing less.

The so-called sophisticated If you find expression to all the thoughts and emotions that happen within you, you would come out almost brutish. To polish that, you create an intention – that’s winding. This so-called sophistication is suicide because you constantly wind faster than you unwind, because the mind becomes two-faced. On one level, it is unwinding, on another level, it has its own intentions. You will see the so-called sophisticated people – when I say “sophisticated,” I mean socially sophisticated people not truly sophisticated people – they always suffer much more than simple folk. Simple people’s anger, hatred, and prejudice find open expression. They may look crude but in terms of cunning, they are many points below the so-called sophisticated people. The more sophisticated people, initially they learn to deceive others. After some time, they become experts and they can even deceive themselves. Their intentions are not even revealed to themselves. Education enhances that capability because of the variety of exposure it gives you without proper understanding of how the human mind functions, how it evolves, what can make it flower, what can make it turn dirty – these things are not being looked at with any profoundness. Information is simply dished out in all kinds of forms to all kinds of people. So generally, people unfortunately are making use of education to wind themselves up. In terms of the world around them, in terms of information, they may know more, but in terms of life process, educated people are generally more ignorant than the illiterate. He is not loose in his head, which has happened to a large segment of educated people. It is not that education itself is the culprit, it is because there is no guideline as to how to make use of it for one’s wellbeing. So unfortunately, education which should have been empowerment, education which should have been clarity, has brought more confusion about the life process itself.

-part 2

Dreams and Karma

In the second of two parts, Sadhguru looks at the nature of dreams, and how they tie in with the unwinding of karma.

Sadhguru: Karma is many things. We talk about the same karma on different levels, according to one’s perception right now. Karma means action. Whose action? “My action.” The first thing is to realize, “This unwinding is happening only because the winding has been done by me.” The unwinding looks oh so automatic. “It doesn’t even take my involvement. It just happens. My anger just happens, my thoughts just happen, my emotions just happen.” It does not even take an intention or involvement to make this happen. It is simply happening. It almost looks like it is some other creature doing all this. If you stay in silence for a period of time, and you just observe the way the mind is going on, it is almost like you are possessed by something else. As if it is doing its own thing. But it is only undoing your doing. Now, is life all doing, dream all undoing? No. Life is a mixture of doing and undoing. The more unconscious you are, the more undoing is happening. If you become partially conscious, you will end up doing a lot more. If you become fully conscious, then undoing will happen very rapidly, doing will be completely held back. A partial level of consciousness always does more doing than undoing. Once you become educated, your doing and undoing gets pretty mixed up. You are capable of undoing and doing at the same time. The role of education: On one level, your thought www.wishesh.com

and emotion are working themselves out in unconscious ways. On another level, you have intentions to fulfill. This is happening to people all the time. I don’t want to blame it all on education, but generally, the type of education you receive is the reason for this – it sets up strong intentions in you. Today’s education is not a process of knowing, it is not a process of realization, it is not a process of developing your body or your mind to its fullest capability. It sets up very strong desires and ambitions within you. Educated people are suffering with limitless wants. They cannot eat a full stomach and happily sit and sleep. No. When they are eating, they are talking business. It is not because they have taken up the cause of the world, to create something, to build something, to make their lives or everyone’s lives wonderful. No. They simply want to do more of the nonsense that they are doing because very strong intentions have been set up, without any particular purpose. This is a powerful tool for creating karma: intention. It is the volition which causes karma, not the action. In the karmic process, the unwinding is happening because of activity. The winding is happening because of strong intentions. The more you think of yourself, the stronger your intentions become. When I say intentions, I’m not talking about great intentions – I’m talking about strong intentions. When you

So wakefulness and dream – it is best that you do not distinguish between the two. I want you to see either both these states as dream, or both these states as different levels of wakefulness. This is one kind of dream, that is a deeper dream. Or this is one kind of reality, that is another kind of reality. If you see it this way, you can make both into a process of unwinding rather than winding.

This is a powerful tool for creating karma: intention. It is the volition which causes karma, not the action. are in anger, you could be unwinding, but you could also be winding. You may just burst into anger and cool down. Or you can burst into anger and then create an intention: “You know what I want to do to her?” Now you will be winding in a big way. Anger is just an explosion. Anger is just an unwinding of something that has happened within you. Anger may breed hatred. Source: www.ishafoundation.org

Do You Know How Diwali Is Celebrated Across India? Diwali also known as Deepavali and the “festival of lights“, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar,

Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November. The religious significance of Diwali varies regionally within India, depending on the school of Hindu philosophy, regional myths, legends, and beliefs.

Hinduism Many see Diwali honoring the return of the Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana from exile, as told in the ancient Hindu epic called the Ramayana. To some, Diwali marks the return of Pandavas after 12 years of Vanas and one year of agyatavas in the other ancient Hindu epic called the Mahabharata. Many other Hindus believe Diwali is linked to the celebration of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and wife of deity Vishnu.

Jainism Diwali has special significance in Jainism. Lord Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankar of this era, attained Nirvana or Moksh on this day at Pavapuri on 15 October 527 BCE, on Chaturdashi of Kartika. According to the Kalpasutra by Acharya Bhadrabahu, 3rd century BC, many gods were present there, illuminating the darkness. Therefore, Jains celebrate Diwali as a day of remembering Mahavira.

Sikhism Diwali, for Sikhs, marks the Bandi Chhor Divas, when Guru Har Gobind Ji freed himself and Hindu Kings, from Fort Gwalior, from the prison of Islamic ruler Jahangir, and arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Ever since then, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Choorh Divas, with the annual lighting up of Golden Temple, fireworks and other festivities. www.wishesh.com

history of Diwali is replete with Diwali in history:The legends and these legends are moored to the stories of Hindu religious scriptures, mostly the Puranas. Though the central theme of all legends point out to the classic truth of the victory of the good over the evils, the mode of their presentation and the characters differ. Diwali, being the festival of lights, lighting the lamp of knowledge within us means to understand and reflect upon the significant purpose of each of the five days of festivities and to bring those thoughts in to the day to day lives.

The five day of Diwali The first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanwantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras. The second day of Diwali is called Narak Chaturdasi. It is the fourteenth lunar day (thithi) of the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik and the eve of Diwali. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear. The third day of Diwali is the actual Diwali. This is the day when worship for Mother Lakshmi is performed. On the fourth day of Diwali, Goverdhan Pooja is performed. The fifth day of the diwali is called Bhratri Dooj. It is a day dedicated to sisters.

Celebrations In The Morning: Deepavali celebrations begins early in the morning. The eldest family member applies sesame oil on the heads of all the family members. Then, it’s off for a bath, beginning with the youngest in the family. They emerge with new clothes and a look of anticipation at the thought of bursting crackers, which symbolizes the killing of the demon king Narakasur.

Lehiyan

In The Evening:

But before that comes Lehiyan, the bitter concoction, to cleanse the system of its festive over-eating! Then to the crackers.

In the evening, lamps are lighted and crackers are burst. As most of the cracker manufacturing units are in Tamil Nadu, there is no dearth of fireworks here.

Murukku

During Thalai Deepavali, the newly weds go to the bride’s parental home for revelry. Taking blessings from the elders, they burst the first crackers of the day. Usually a vast range of crackers is bought, with costs running into thousands of rupees. The Diwali Celebrations include a visit to the temple, gifts of clothes and jewelry, gorging on sweets and receiving blessings of elders. The groom’s parents, brothers and sisters come down to join in the celebrations.

A puja is performed for the family deities in the morning. Breakfast consists of murukku , a sweet dish and, of course, idli or dosa .

Wish fulfilment Some communities believe that when Narakasur was to be killed, Lord Krishna asked him his last wish. Narakasura replied that he wanted to enjoy the last day of his life in a grand manner and Diwali was celebrated. That was the beginning and the practice continued. www.wishesh.com

Star Gazing 104

Aries

Be ready to work hard this month, Mars is joining Pluto to boost your career but nothing comes without an effort, so you have to produce it to earn the rewards. Competition is healthy and some coworkers are fighting as they don’t want to let you win. You don’t let them win without fighting back. Love is complicated until the 17th of November after that peace and passion come back, you make up for every bad mood moments you had before. Your daily life is pretty intense as Uranus is encouraging you to make some new experiences, go for it.

Cancer

Taurus Your relationship as a couple is very important this month, you want to spend as much time as you can with your sweetie. Let him or her breathe a little bit, to see friends or family for example. After the 17th, you will be less clingy. If you are waiting for a new work contract, this is a good month. You may want to invest money in a long-term project, savings at the bank or buying your first flat. Be careful on the road, don’t drive fast, don’t be the bad driver yourself. A new friend is becoming very important as he gives you great honest advice.

November, 2014

Love is very important this month, a new story makes you open up your heart again. You are starting to trust that love is possible, lots of healing this month. You let grief and pain go to the past, you are open to a new future. If you are in a relationship, you are true and sincere, no games involved. But lots of tensions come out if you are telling the truth in a blunt way. Choose your words. You love going out and you see friends that you did not see for a while. You will feel better about that reconnection as you missed them too.

leo Jupiter and Lilith are in your sign the whole month. Happy one day, in a bad mood the next day, optimistic then realistic, you are like a rollercoaster, because Saturn brings some shadows in your mind, especially if you are born on the3rd decan of the sign. Expect some interesting job offer that you should consider if you want to change career. You will spend more time with your family, you are nicely taking care of your parents and you spend fun time with your brother or sister. Be careful with your weight, Jupiter makes you want to enjoy and eat more.

Gemini Communication is a master word for your month of November. You connect with friends through phone, email, tweet, messenger, Facebook, FaceTime, all of those Medias are so easy to use for you. If you are looking for love, it looks like you attract the complicated ones, the ones who are grieving a past love. After the 17th, you will meet someone charming, and less complex than some others you met lately. In a relationship, you are very close on the second half of the month. At work, you see the end of the tunnel soon, you are closing some difficult tasks that were weighing you down.

virgo

sagittarius

You feel like going away for the weekends, you may want to look for some sunnier places even if they are not really far. You are closer to your coworkers, you make the effort to raise your nose from your computer to be more engaging in real conversations with real people. It will be greatly appreciated. If you are single, this is an excellent month to meet someone with a great personality and strength. That will encourage you to do more than you usually do on your own. Starting a new exercise is something you want to do to get firmer and fit

scorpio You are feeling frustrated, not feeling loved enough between the 15th and the 19th of October. After that date, you clarify your emotions and try to understand the feelings and motivation of your loved one. Sometimes you are creating the drama when there is nothing wrong in your relationship. You are very unsecure. The end of the month is happy and relaxed. If you are single, you meet somebody who is very complex, but you seem to like that. At work you are really clear and you know exactly what to do to manage priorities and therefore you are successful

libra

You focus on money as many planets are in your financial zone. Making more money because you work more seems logical. Some Libras may develop a side business or consulting business. Or if you have an independent practice, you have more clients than before. Your daily routine at work is completely scattered and you run after time. You need to stop one day and get organized to rebound. Your parents are supporting you for a big project, going back to school or buying a car or moving in a new place. You have a misunderstanding or jealousy from a brother

Aquarius Where do you ‘fit’ in? Why do you feel a need to give such thought to how or where you ‘fit’ in? Society has always been about ‘conforming and that doesn’t look set to change in the near future. So many people adhere to rules set by unseen councils who believe themselves worthy of dictating terms surrounding what is required from anyone before they can ‘fit in’ or be accepted. During November, it will become increasingly clearer how much credibility you do have already and what it is you can offer in ways you might believe – through convincing yourself or being told by certain others – you can’t. Expect during coming weeks to gain much deserved respect. www.wishesh.com

You are feeling tired and stressed until the 23rdof November. You may need to go to bed early, eat healthy, take vitamins and exercise at it helps you regulate your energies. You pushed yourself too hard in October, so now you pay the price. It is ok to stay home sometimes and clean and sort papers out. You are surrounded by a mess that makes you tired emotionally. Have an eye on your bank statements you may not realize that you spent too much lately. Love is fantastic by the 17th, Venus enters in your sign and you are the happiest person on earth.

capricorn Mars is in Capricorn with Pluto all month of November. This gives you a high level of energy. You will accomplish so much during this month that you will be amazed at yourself. You are really excited by meeting a new person if you are single, as the character is interesting, the look corresponds to what you like, and the interests are mutual. What is better to start a relationship? If you are in a long term one, you are really busy doing things together, cooking, exercise, walks, painting the kitchen, staying active all the time.

pisces Life presents us with different types of ‘curves’. There are ‘curve balls’, situations that often appear suddenly and cause us to reassess our positions. Then, there are things called ‘learning curves’ that are intended to be helpful and enlightening but have a tendency to cause us to react negatively. Sometimes, we react to both inappropriately because we draw upon past experiences and results in the belief we’re about to encounter similar. This month, you set a new precedent. Although a situation appears familiar and worthy of caution or suspicion, what you’ve learned previously can be applied in a way that ensures you bring about a new and much more pleasing result.
