Sania Mirza, Shoaib Malik Blessed with a Baby Boy Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik have become proud parents to a baby boy. The news broke after Malik tweeted about the arrival of the baby on saying: “Excited to announce: It’s a boy, and my girl is doing great and keeping strong as usual #Alhumdulilah. Thank you for the wishes and Duas, we are humbled. #BabyMirzaMalik.” Shohaib Malik also tweeted saying, their son name is Izhaan and took an opportunity to thank everyone on behalf of Sania and their both families. Earlier in April, when the ace tennis star announced her pregnancy, she also added that the couple had decided to give their child the surname - Mirza Malik.
“Today I will tell you a secret. My husband and I have spoken about it and we have decided that whenever we have a child, the child will have Mirza Malik as a surname and not just Malik. So that’s where we stand as a family including my husband. He actually wants a daughter,” Sania said during a panel discussion titled ‘Gender Bias’ at the Goa Fest 2018.
Nation's Huge Tribute To Iron Man-Sardar Vallabhai Patel PM Narendra Modi pays respect to the national leader Vallabhai Patel by dedicating the tallest statue, on behalf of the whole nation on 31st Oct. It is standing as the tallest statue in the world till now. The statue is located in Gujarat on the river island facing Narmada Dam. The giant statue is not only a tribute to Vallabhai Patel but also a monument of Unity(The Statue Of Unity).
“The statue will remind those who question India’s existence, that this nation was, is and will remain eternal,” PM Modi said. “This (statue) is a source of unity...with this sentiment we should march...and march with a dream to make the country ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Superior India)”
The new pride of India is 600 feet tall and the construction costs around 3000 crore. The project of the statue also includes three-star hotel, a museum and a research center.
“I am amazed when some people of our own country dare to see this initiative from a political view & criticize us like we have committed a huge crime. Is remembering country’s great personalities a crime?”
The project of constructing the statue was taken by Larsen and Turbo in Oct 2014 and successfully accomplished it by Oct 2018. To build this huge monument, it took 129 tonnes of iron from 100 million farmers in 1,69,000 villages across all the states of India. It is brilliantly designed in walking pose, by Indian Sculptor Ram.V.Sutar. The Statue Of Unity will be the new tourist attraction of India. The date for the inauguration of the statue (October 31, 2018) also marks the 143rd birth anniversary of Vallabhai Patel. The statue will be opened for public on 3rd Nov and the tickets will be available on line.
Impact of “Statue Of Unity” Government was questioned about farmers welfare and the funds could be used for irrigation facilities instead of constructing the Statue of Unity. They also claimed that the project has destroyed natural resources and that families that had to be relocated from the site of the statue haven’t been compensated. Gujarat tribal leaders called for bandh on 31st Oct(the inauguration day of the statue). PM Modi’s Statement about Statue Of Unity
“If it was not for Sardar Sahab’s resolve, then we Indians would have had to take visa to see the Gir lions, pray at Somnath, or to see Hyderabad’s Charminar”.

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art that originated about 3000 years ago. It derives its name from Kalam meaning Pen, and Kari meaning work, literally Pen-work or pen craft. The Kalamkari artist uses a bamboo or date palm stick pointed at one end with a bundle of fine hair attached to this pointed end to serve as the brush or pen. These paintings were earlier drawn on cotton fabric only, but now we can see these paintings on silk and other materials as well.
WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
The Kalamkari art includes both, printing and painting. The colors used in making these paintings are organic. Most of the colors are prepared using parts of plants – roots, leaves along with mineral salts of iron, tin, copper, alum, etc., which are used as mordants. There are numerous forms
and styles of this type of painting throughout the Indian subcontinent. The term kalamkari literally means ‘work done with a pen.’ The term is now inseparably attached to the painted and block-printed cotton and silk textiles, produced in the
Coromandel Coast (parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu) of India. Today, two of the most prominent centres of kalamkari production are Srikalahasti (Chittoor District) and Machilipatnam (Krishna District) in Andhra Pradesh. While in Srikalahasti, the NOVEMBER 2018 | WWW.WISHESH.NET

History and Development of Kalamkari Art In ancient India, the art of painting using organic colors and dyes was very popular, but this style of painting originated at Kalahasti (80 miles north of Chennai) and at Masulipatnam (200 miles east of Hyderabad). The paintings then used to depict Hindu Deities and the scenes from Hindu mythology. Masulipatnam being a muslim region, the weavers were involved in the block printing art whereas the artists from Kalahasti practiced painting Hindu mythological scenes. textiles are literally painted with pens made out of bamboo and cotton, in Machilipatnam, the line drawing done with a pen is transferred onto wooden blocks which are carved and then used to print fabric. In Machilipatnam, the production is carried out in karkhanas (commercial workshops), where the block makers, washers and printers work under the same roof. In Srikalahasti, the textiles are produced by small family units where the members work together. This essay discusses the history, stylistic development, materials and techniques of kalamkari at both Srikalahasti and Machalipatnam.
Fragments of Indian blockprinted cloth dating to the late Roman period have been discovered from archaeological sites in Egypt. However, the oldest samples from the Coromandel Coast itself are from 13th- 14th century A.D Srikalahasti is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus because of presence of the Srikalahastisvara temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Historically, textiles from Srikalahasti were essentially used as canopies and hangings that acted as backdrops to the images of the deities at the temple. The themes of these paintings are derived from Hindu religion
and also from nature— bird and tree of life motifs abound. The temple at Srikalahasti gained prominence under the Pallava kings (6th- 9th century AD), and was further developed during the Chola (9th- 13th century AD) and Vijayanagara (14th- 17th century AD) Empires. The textiles produced in Machilipatnam were meant for clothes, prayer mats, bedspreads, tapestries and hangings. The printing techniques used to produce these textiles helped in mass production. The motifs from Machilipatnam are often cross-cultural and combine local motifs with those derived from Persia and Europe. Machilipatnam, was a busy port during the late medieval period. The port was especially bustling from the 15th-17th century A.D. As the textiles produced in Machilipatnam were free from any kinds of cultural or religious restraints, they displayed varied imagery starting from stylized plants, creepers, geometric designs to animals and human figures. These representations are important sources for the study of the contemporary social scenario.
The styles of Kalamkari Paintings:
1- Masulipatnam Kalamkari: NOVEMBER 2018 | WWW.WISHESH.NET

Owing to Muslim rule in Golconda, the Masulipatnam Kalamkari was influenced by Persian motifs & designs, widely adapted to suit their taste. The outlines and main features are done using hand carved blocks. The finer details are later done using the pen.
The Machilipatnam style of kalamkari is different from the kalahasti style because it is not exactly ‘pen craft’. While creating kalamkari art using the Machilipatnam style, the craftsman creates his sketch and its key design features with the help ofhand-carved blocks. These blocks continued to be used repeatedly for many years and by different craftsmen. Kalamkari art is known for its beautiful colour patterns that flow through a variety of different themes. You can often spot figures of women in yellow, demons in green and red and Gods in shades of blue. Lotus motifs tend to be the most common background for these prints. In the kalamkari printing technique, the craftsman first decides on the fabric and colours. The chosen cloth is then bleached using either cow or goat dung. It is further treated with a milk and myrobalan solution that helps prevent the colour from spreading.
2- Sri Kalahasti Style:
The Kalahasti tradition which developed in the temple region mostly concentrated on themes form Hindu mythology, epics (Ramayana, Mahabharatha), images of Gods and heroes. Craftsmen practicing the Srikalahasti style of kalamkari art continue to make use of the traditional dyeing technique, inherited from their ancestors. Srikalahasti is a small temple town found in the Chittoor district in Andhra. The main design inspiration for the Srikalahasti style is ‘hindu mythology’. The Srikalahasti style is characterized by one very important feature: free hand drawing. The procedure begins with the craftsman treating the cotton cloth using mordant and sketching the design outline with black colour or ‘kasami’. The only other colours used for filling the outlined sketch are those obtained from natural plants: indigo, green, red and vibrant yellow. Therefore, every piece of the kalahasti kalamkari art is quite unique and absolutely authentic!
3- Karrupur Style: Karrupur is a style of Kalamkari that developed in the Thanjavur region during the Maratha rule. The Kalamkari work was a further WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
embellishment to the gold brocade work in the woven fabric, which was used as sarees & dhotis by the royal family during the period of Raja Sarfoji and later Raja Shivaji.
Materials and Techniques The materials and techniques for making the two types of kalamkaris are similar. In Srikalahasti, the cotton cloth is first washed with water thoroughly to remove starch and other oily substances. After drying, the cloth is dipped into buffalo milk mixed with myrobalan fruit dust, and then, after squeezing out the excess solution, it is dried again. Next, the initial drawing is done with charcoal pencil made from
burnt twigs of the tamarind tree. For colouring, a pen made of bamboo is used. One side of the bamboo stick is carved to get a sharp tip. Near this tip, a piece of cotton cloth is wrapped and then tied with thread. The solution for drawing the outline is locally called “kasim” and is made by adding 500 grams of sugarcane jaggery, 100 grams of palm jaggery and 1 kilogram of rusted iron into 10 litres of water. The solution is kept for around twenty one days before it is used. The bamboo pen is dipped into kasim, gently squeezed to release the liquid and then used for drawing. A piece of cotton is kept at hand to blot the excessive ink from the surface. In the area that has to be painted red, initially a solution of alum water is applied with a blunt pen. Generally, the background of these textiles is painted red. To get maroon, instead of red, a small amount of kasim is added to this solution. Separately, alizarin solution is prepared using 50 grams of alizarin diluted into water (for around 6 metres of cloth) and then added to around 15 litres of boiling water. The cloth, drawn with kasim and alum solution is dipped into the hot water and kept for around 45 minutes. The textiles are then washed in the river Swarnamukhi which is nearby. The river is shallow which makes it suitable for
washing. After the process, the cloth is dried and again dipped into buffalo milk. For yellow, the dust of ripe myrobalan fruit, mixed with alum solution is used. For orange, chvalkodi and alizarin is mixed with the myrobalanalum mixture. For blue, indigo is used. After this, the cloth is washed again in water before it is finally ready for use. In Machilipatnam, the washing of the cotton fabrics is done at the Kalia Canal. Then a process similar to the one described above is used. In Machilipatnam, for the block printed textiles, line drawings are not necessary. The textiles produced here can be monochromatic or polychromatic and for each colour, separate blocks are used. The manufacture of these textiles is a collaborative process. The whole unit is divided into several sub-units. The first sub-unit is the block maker’s workshop where the artisans are mostly from the carpenter’s community. For making the blocks, a cross section of teakwood is generally used. Blocks are carved using the relief process, where the positive area, which has the design that will be transferred onto the cloth, rises above the sunken negative area. In the printing sub-unit, the colouring process usually starts with the outlines and NOVEMBER 2018 | WWW.WISHESH.NET

moves towards filling-in of the inner portions of the design. For polychromatic printing, the black and red portions of the design are printed first and then the cloth is washed and boiled. Unlike the process at Srikalahasti, alum solution is not used here for the red colour. All the colours are stored in flat rectangular wooden vessels and covered with several layers of cotton cloth or jute. After printing, the fabrics are dried and taken to the washing sub-unit. This unit is usually open from all four sides and consists of one or more open ovens. These ovens are, till today, fuelled with rice husk and wood powder. Big semicircular vessels made of iron are placed over these ovens for boiling the fabrics. WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
While boiling, leaves from the local forest, known as gaja, are added to the water to fix the colours. After boiling, they are dried and sent for further printing with yellow and blue colours. After this, the fabrics are washed again in boiling water. Finally the finishing touches are given, which sometimes includes embellishment by hand.
Conclusion: The study of the history and evolution of kalamkari at both Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam reveals an amalgamation of a diverse set of influences. The two regions developed their designs not only in response to the visual traditions of the
region but also to the needs of the market. A review of the two kalamkari traditions also reveals the similarities in their techniques. Today, many kalamkari artists continue to produce items of furnishings and fabrics for the modern market. While these industries cater to new markets with ever-changing innovations, at both Srikalahasti and Machalipatnam the traditional modes of production have survived and are gaining wider appreciation due to their vibrant designs, use of natural colours and as symbols of the region’s heritage.

Did you know why the world celebrates Halloween?
28
WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
If you are here wondering that the celebration behind Halloween only just signifies visiting the pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins and eating candies and wearing spooky attires, you know nothing of what this occasion stands for. Don’t worry, we gotchu!
NOVEMBER 2018 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
COVER STORY
What does the name even mean?
30
Been wondering where the name “Halloween” even popped up from? It literally stands for hallowed evening and back in the days, a number of decades back, it was mainly known as the All Hallow’s Eve for the date of October 31st and then All Saint’s Day on November 01st. The days were mainly observed to commemorate and pay tribute to the saints and eventually with the passing days, the name of the festivity was cut down and shortened to Halloween, the one that we are familiar with today.
Why Do We Celebrate It On October 31st? Majority of the believers state that Halloween is mainly celebrated on the 31st of October because of the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain which is believed to be the root of the festivities of Halloween and it occurred on this day. This time of the year is when the seasons changed, transitioning towards the fall season but apart from WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
that, the observers even found that during that time, the boundary between this world and the next became especially thin, which enabled easy connection to the dead and hence the spooky theme behind the occasion. While Halloween is more or less celebrated by majority of the Western Countries, especially in the United States and United Kingdom, the same also has a similar kind of concept in the Jewish culture, known as the Yom Kippur which is also observed during the month of October and involves offering prayers to the dead.
Halloween Costumes and Trick or Treating – History While the concept of treat or treating as well as wearing different kinds of costumes during Halloween has become a raging trend now, the same was not a trend but a ritual back in the initial days when it started. Many of the people would dress up as saints and recite poems and songs from door to door on that day. Not just that, even the small children in the town would go from house to house asking the owner of the house to treat them with soul
cakes which is something a lot similar to biscuits. This concept was what eventually evolved as what we now know as the trick or treating that children do. For the concept of the costumes, they technically evolved too. While the ritual of dressing up as a saint did die down, the same was brought back when Scottish
Virat Kohli
pranksters decided to dress up as something spooky to scare off their unsuspecting neighbours. And that is exactly from where the trend of wearing scary and gory costumes on Halloween became a raging trend.
What is Halloween like today?
Halloween in today’s date is possibly one of the most awaited occasions in the United States of America. The festivities are celebrated throughout the entire month summing up to the final day of celebration. While the kids wait to get in their costumes to get their carriers filled with candies and treats, the adults spend the entire month making amends to make
better decorations, better costumes and binge watch the spooky horror movies while sipping on Pumpkin spiced latte.

Indian-American Nikki Haley
Steps Down as U.S.
Ambassador to United Nations An Indian-American United States ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has resigned from her position on October 9. The 45-year-old Haley is the first ever Indian-American appointed to a Cabinetlevel position by any president.
WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
The stepping down of Haley has left White House with one less moderate Republican voice on Trump cabinet’s foreign policy team. Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, had been an early and recurrent critic of Trump, attracting frequent admiration. Haley was born in South Carolina to an IndianAmerican Sikh family. She earned international attention for speaking out against the Confederate battle flag in the aftermath of the 2015 massacre at a black church in Charleston. According to Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Haley is harboring presidential drives and many in president Donald Trump’s inner circle fear that she could be the heir to the presidency. I want to be able to speak my mind.’ He said, ‘That is why I asked you to do this.’ In all honesty, I didn’t think they were going to take me up on everything I asked for. And they gave me all that. So how do you turn that down?”
Throughout her over a yearand-a-half on the job, she has recurrently spoken her mind, whether it’s going further on human rights than numerous of her administration colleagues or censuring racism at home. Describing Haley as an “extraordinary person”, Donald Trump has said she “going to make a lot of money” in the
private sector, which she intends to join. In her resignation letter, she had hinted that she is headed to the private sector after two years at the UN. Trump further said he is sure that his daughter Ivanka Trump would be “dynamite” as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, but admitted that he would be “accused of nepotism” if he has chosen her to succeed Nikki Haley. Shortly after the President’s remarks, Ivanka Trump took to Twitter to rule herself out of the running for an ambassadorship. The Trump administration has been notably slow to criticize Saudi Arabia, despite mounting indication that Khashoggi, a critic of the Islamic petrostate’s potent crown prince, went missing after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Khashoggi case has given Trump with one of the most acute foreign policy crises of his nearly two-year-old presidency.
The contention has put the kingdom under unprecedented pressure to offer an explanation to take the heat off its rulers. The reports said the body parts of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi were found at the home of Saudi consul general in Istanbul and one of the sources said the writer’s remains were found in the garden of the consul general’s home, which is just 500 meters away from the consulate.

Despite Supreme Court’s Verdict No Woman Made it to
Sabarimala Temple
The Supreme Court on September 28, pronounced its verdict on the entry of women of menstrual age in Sabarimala temple, Kerala, a temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappan, and said law and society are tasked with the task to act as levelers.
WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
The top court granted women between the age of 10 to 50 entry into Sabarimala temple, breaking temple’s antique tradition of restricting menstruating women from entering its premises. Regardless of Supreme Court’s verdict protests prevailed in Kerala opposing the entry of girls and women of menstrual age into the shrine. On October 17, the temple opened at 5 p.m. for the monthly pujas which concluded on October 22. Protesters ensured that no female in the 10-50 age could enter the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine. The Kerala unit of Shiv Sena threatened to stage mass suicides if women in 10-50 age group are permitted to enter the Sabarimala temple.

The other day, five women from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh tried to get a darshan.
An attempt by two women to enter temple was disappointed near the steps of the shrine when the LDF government red-flagged the journey amid mounting protests and a threat from the thantri (priest) to close down the temple.
The two women who made the journey are Rehana Fathima, 31, of Kochi, and journalist Kavitha from Andhra Pradesh. Both reached the police station at Pamba Thursday night, seeking police protection to go up the hill.
However, all the women had to return before reaching the sanctum sanctorum following massive protests by Lord Ayyappa devotees.
When the women escorted by police headed towards the temple and devotees gathered near the steps, the government sensed trouble. It then asked the police to end
The women, wearing protective gear and helmet, moved towards the shrine. A police contingent led by IG S Sreejith and SP Debesh Kumar Behera escorted them.

There is no second opinion on equality for women in every sphere. But when you talk about a temple, every temple has its timehonored rituals, besides traditions being followed for a long time. My humble opinion is that no one should interfere in that.
-Union minister Smriti Irani I am nobody to speak against the Supreme Court verdict as I am a serving cabinet minister. But just plain common sense is that would you carry a napkin seeped with menstrual blood and walk into a friend’s house. You would not.
LDF government led by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would have to pay a “heavy price” if the suppression of the agitation continues. There is no restriction for women to offer prayers in any other Ayyappa temple… The uniqueness of the Sabarimala shrine has to be protected.
-Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan
And would you think it is respectful to do the same when you walk into the house of God? That is the difference. I have the right to pray, but no right to desecrate. That is the difference that we need to recognize and respect.
We have already made this very clear that we will abide by whatever the apex court verdict is. Now that the verdict has come, we will implement it.

If you are wondering about when we are going to be blessed with seeing yet another royal baby, we will have to wait for a few more months now because according to the Royal Correspondent, the Duchess has only recently had her 12 weeks check-up done and is in a very good health. While the baby is expected to be born during the Spring of 2019, there is not one person who is not excited to see how the new addition to the royal family tree emerges. Will they be a little bundle of joy or a bubbling sassy bubbie, we will just have to wait for a few more months now. As for who are going to be godparents to this baby, while everyone has gotten their dibs
on every single staff member of the Cut, it is safe to assume that Meghan’s best friend, Jessica Mulroney is definitely a potent option in this. The couple who got married on May 19, 2018 after around two years of dating are overjoyed with the news and so is everyone around (and possibly the entire world). The couple was touring through Australia and the candid moments that they shared definitely left everyone in the close proximity speechless and dumbfounded. They have their entire schedule packed with visiting several places starting from Australia, covering Fiji, Kingdom of Tonga and even New Zealand in the Autumn of ’18.
In a very recent speech during the Invictus Games, Prince Harry opened up about his struggled with depression and the constant support that the Duchess provided him throughout the speech was evident of how much the couple cared and supported each other’s well beings. No wonder they are going to be great parents too. As Prince Harry mentioned, “Nowhere is that truer than in the area of mental health,” he insisted. “By simply being here
and fighting back from some of the darkest experiences known to anyone, you have become role models for everyone at home or in the stands who might be struggling with their emotions or with a mental illness… You are showing it’s okay not to be okay. And most importantly, you are showing us all that it’s okay to ask for help.” We wish the Duke and Duchess all the best wishes on their journey to parenthood.

Durgabai Deshmukh Revolutionary in Every Sense

76
At a time when a vast majority of women in India were confined to the domestic sphere, the nationalist struggle propelled a few exceptional gems who shone bright with their talent, courage and drive for the rigours of nation-building.
Durgabai, a Gandhian, a freedom fighter and later a criminal lawyer in the Madras High Court, did not come from a family of particular privilege. Born on July 15, 1909 at Rajahmundry in the coastal east Godavari district of present-day Andhra Pradesh to social worker B. V. N. Rama Rao and his wife Krishnavenamma, Durgabai

spent her formative years in Kakinada. From an early age, she was sensitive to the ubiquity of social inequity and suffering. She observed the cruel customs and poor treatment of women and recognized the urgent need for social reform. Durgabai was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. When Mahatma visited Kakinada to
address a town hall gathering in 1921, the barely 12-yearold child was keen to meet Mahatma along with a group local Devadasi and Muslim women. A victim of child marriage, her union at 8 with a much older man is what she calls her father’s only mistake. Which she corrected herself, by bravely walking out of
in Madras after another freedom fighter T Prakasam was arrested by the British. While Mahatma was doing the Dandy March, she was leading the Satyagraha down South. She was subsequently arrested and had to spend three years in jail and that too in solitary confinement. Durgabai Deshmukh’s training ground was the national freedom movement where she learnt the lessons of perseverance, austerity, and sacrifice. It also brought her in unhindered proximity of the masses and their quotidian struggles. Thus she made it her mission to ameliorate the plight of the downtrodden.
the marriage when she 15, before the couple could even consummate it. After meeting Gandhi, not only her, but her entire family gave up all forms of Western wear and decided to wear only
Khadi. She later decided to quit school arguing against the imposition of English. All this happened amid the thick of Non-Cooperation Movement. Nine years later, she led the Salt Satyagraha movement
Durgabai identified the culprits of progress as lack of education, obsolete superstitions and subaltern treatment of womenfolk. The Andhra Mahila Sabha founded by her played a commendable role in empowering women through education, health facilities and vocational training. As a member of the Constituent Assembly

the impoverished and the destitute. During the Salt Satyagraha, a young Durgabai took over as leader of the movement in Madras after freedom fighter T. Prakasam was arrested. She was arrested and sentenced to prison for nearly three years from 19301933, including a year of solitary confinement. In her autobiography, “Chintaman and I,” Durgabai recalled her years in imprisonment as an eye-opener to the circumstances of several women inmates who due to illiteracy had admitted to crimes they had not even committed. It strengthened her resolve, on one hand
to become a lawyer who could provide pro bono legal aid, and on the other, empowering women with education. Just when her legal career at the Madras High Court was taking off, Durgabai was elected to the Constituent Assembly as a Congress candidate in 1946. She was a member of the Steering Committee and took an active interest in the Constituent Assembly debates. With her legal background, Durgabai weighed in on judicial issues. She also led the amendment to the draft constitution in lowering the age from 35 to 30 for holding
a seat in the council of states. In “Chintaman and I,” she mentions being particularly gratified for being associated with the debate on the Hindu Code bill. Her term in jail opened her eyes to the circumstances under which many women were incarcerated to the crimes they didn’t even commit but would confess to because they were neither educated nor had any social network. While she advocated for women rights in property, an independent judiciary was also her forefront in which she raised her concerns. She said,
“The independence of the judiciary is a thing which has to be decided, and this independence to a large extent depends on the way in which these judges are to be appointed. By some accounts say the couple decided that if one earns, the other would dedicate his or her life to the nation building. Post-Independence, she dedicated her life to the law and social service. In fact, she is known as the ‘mother of social work’ in India due to her immense contribution.

The stone caskets, like Chinese Puzzle boxes, made of Khondalite stone, revealed three other boxes within them, made of steatite, silver and gold respectively; the gold casket, which is the last one, contained a relic or dhatu in the form of a small piece of bone. Another interesting find is that of an east facing apsidal chaityagriha, built of bricks, 33 by 11 meters (108 ft Ă— 36 ft) in size with 3.3 meters (11 ft)-thick walls. This edifice, the first such Buddhist structure found in Odisha, contains a circular stupa at its center. Note: Pushpagiri was an ancient Buddhist Mahavihara located atop Langudi Hills. It
contains a unique rock-cut elephant surrounded by four monolithic khondalite pillars; this dates from the Mauryan period in the 3rd century, BCE. Deuli, a hill situated in the confluence of the Brahmani and Kimiria rivers, has preserved five rock-cut Buddhist chambers inside caves. Additional Buddhist sites have been discovered at Bajragiri, Sarapur and Paikrapur. The Langudi sites are perhaps the largest historic Buddhist complex in India. Finally, the word for Diamond Triangle Tour is an iconic Buddhist destination. You can find peace and real joy by exploring around the three places of Diamond triangle.

indian History Battle of Plassey The Battle of Plassey was fought on June 23, 1757, exactly 261 years ago. On June 23, 1757, the Battle of Plassey led to the unlikely conquest of Bengal by Robert Clive’s army. George Bruce Malleson, in The Decisive Battles of India (1883), described Plassey as the most unheroic English victory. WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
It was “Plassey which necessitated,” wrote Malleson, “the conquest and colonisation of the Cape of Good Hope, of the Mauritius, the protectorship over Egypt; Plassey which gave to the sons of her middleclasses the finest field for the development of their talent and industry the world has ever known… the conviction of which underlies the thought of every true Englishman.” It was Plassey, however, that exposed the subcontinent’s internal conflicts, destroying the native dynasties then in power and also the economy of imperial Bengal.
In the early 18th century, India was a gigantic cesspool of business interests torn between European powers, native rulers, and the local or migrant merchants — all of them prowling about the hunting grounds of opium, saltpetre, textiles, spices, and bullion. In 1756, anticipating French and Dutch fortifications in Bengal, the English began reinforcing troops at Fort William, their ramparts in Calcutta. Siraj ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, had just succeeded to the throne, after his grandfather Ali Vardi Khan. Infuriated, he asked the English to stop
their fortifications, and when they ignored him, Siraj udDaulah attacked the fort and its neighbouring church.
The context By the mid-18th century, the Mughal Empire, which had once controlled most of the Indian sub-continent, was in a state of collapse as native Indian and European states attempted to carve out their own political and economic power bases. The East India Company was one of these competing powers. While battling the French for trading supremacy, NOVEMBER 2018 | WWW.WISHESH.NET

military service and his tactical flair and personal bravery had earned him rapid promotion and a great personal fortune. His army was about 3,000-strong, including 2,100 Indian sepoys (infantry) and about 800 Europeans. The latter included the 1st Madras European Regiment and 600 Crown troops from the 39th Regiment. Clive had only ten field guns and two small howitzers.

it simultaneously began to involve itself in local politics, especially in Bengal, India’s richest province. The Bengali ruler Siraj-udDaulah had been in dispute with the Company for some time. A year before the Battle of Plassey, when the WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
Company refused to halt military preparations against the French, he had attacked and captured its stronghold of Fort William in Calcutta (Kolkata).
The armies Siraj-ud-Daulah (1733-57) commanded around 50,000 men, including 16,000 cavalry. He also had 50 field guns, a combination of 32-, 24- and 18-pounders. Officers on loan from the French commanded this artillery. Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Clive (1725-74) commanded the British force. Formerly a writer (clerk), Clive had switched to the Company’s
One year later, Clive exacted revenge at Plassey. With the help of the Nawab’s uncle, Mir Jaffar, and local moneylenders, the Jagat Seths, Siraj ud-Daulah was betrayed. The formidable Bengal army of about 60,000
soldiers, 300 cannons and 300 elephants outnumbered Clive’s forces of 3,000 by 20 times, and yet ended up deserting or surrendering. The battle was lost by soldiers who did not fight and won by generals or subedars, not exactly gallant. In 1756, as Calcutta burned from Fort William to Fulta, Emin arrived in London, working his way as a lascar ‘The Plassey Plunder,’ as the aftermath of the battle came to be known, had the English navy and army each receiving a tribute of £275,000 (about £32 million today). The Company annually received from Jaffar — who supplanted Siraj ud-Daulah in Bengal —
£3 million (about £308 million), between 1757 and 1760. As a clerk in Madras, Clive’s annual salary was £5, with £40 for expenses. When he returned to England in 1767, he was ‘Clive of India,’ with a trade revenue of £4 million, more enormous than any European kingdom then, and had a personal jagir of £34,567 (£3.5 million today). Clive’s father and he purchased seats in the British Parliament, and a peerage in Ireland, where his County Clare estate was renamed ‘Plassey’ for the new Baron Clive.
Aftermath of the Battle of Plassey:
22 killed and 50 wounded as opposed to over 500 for the Nawab. Following the battle, Clive saw that Mir Jafar was made nawab on June 29. Deposed and lacking support, Siraj-ud-Duala attempted to flee to Patna but was captured and executed by Mir Jafar’s forces on July 2. The victory at Plassey effectively eliminated French influence in Bengal and saw the British gain control of the region through favorable treaties with Mir Jafar. A pivotal moment in Indian history, Plassey saw the British establish a firm base from which to bring the remainder of the subcontinent under their control.

Fake Banks Apps
May have Stolen Thousands
of Customers Data: Report More than a few Indian bank customers may have been duped by scammers through fake Android applications. According to a report by Sophos Labs, an Information Technology (IT) security firm, customers of at least 7 banks, State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Bank of Barod, Yes Bank and Citi Bank might have lost their data from their mobile phones through these apps. WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018
These apps are accessible on the Android Play Store and is similar to the banks’ original apps and customers might have been lured into downloading and installing these apps by offering some free samples. These fake android apps have logo of respective banks which makes it difficult for customers to differentiate between the fake and original apps, it said .The report further said that the deceptive malware in these apps may have stolen thousands of customers’ account and credit card details. When contacted some of the banks mentioned in the report said they have not come across any such fake apps According to an Economic Times report, the banks have not entirely acknowledged that this threat exists and only a few of them said they will conduct an investigation. These banks have kept the nodal agency, CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) also in the loop. CERT may do its own investigation as it does with computer security incidents brought to its attention. Yes Bank has said they have handed over
the case to their cyber fraud department. The largest of them all, SBI is still, yet to take action in any manner. The interesting thing, if one were to go by the report by Sophos Labs, is that some of these apps were ‘too good to be true’. Some of these apps carried malware that was able to stealing other information that the users might have stored in their phones, like credit cards and other details. The familiar, but a serious problem of rogue apps finding their place in the Android Play Store has been disturbing the cybersecurity experts for long. Google has taken some steps in recent times in its and privacy and security policy for app developers and some of the permissions earlier granted are not being effortlessly allowed now. But it is still a long method before Google is able to clear out its Play Store of all such wary apps. The banks will have to work out their own ways to stop this threat and set up some steps to prevent customers from falling into traps.

HOLLYWOOD Story :
A Star is Born
Bradley Cooper’s first directorial venture is truly a delight and the well acclaimed story line gets a new rendition, one that does do justice to it. The passionate and talented musician lovers who triumph through love has made fans feel something for years and both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper steal our hearts once. From the time Bradley discovers Gaga at a bar, to the downfall of his career due to his alcohol problem., the subtle ways in which people just give in to the demands of a normal life, the humiliation, the rise, the fall, the movie is more of a feeling train than just dialogues and it truly makes an emotional impact even though you might not burst int tears right away. 142
Its not a story you do not know, but it makes you feel so much. Empathy and emotiuon0- the two heavy ingredients. The way the narrative progresses makes you realize that maybe love alone is not enough, it teaches you the value of a sacrifice.
Analysis : Lady Gaga, in her first performance is astounding, she owns the screen and all the actors provide truly awe inspiring performances. Every performance, every eye contact makes you feel something, which goes to show what a great job Cooper has done., even though we are all familiar with the tragic love story, through their eyes, its fresh, its anew.
Final Word: A Star is Born conquers and truly sets one’s heart on fire. The songs are soulful, the crowds are magnetic and the actors give a terrific performance. Special mentions for Shallow and La vie en Rose. WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018

Pataakha
Story :
Vishal Bhardwaj brings rural Rajasthan into our lives and shows us the life and journeys of two warring sisters. A story that could easily be something almost all siblings go through, but the rendition sets it completely apart. From gaalis, to slaps, to kicks and accusations, the scheming and hatred tends to become over the top at times but the direction makes it enjoyable and entertaining and even touching sometimes. The movie directly launches into the rambunctious sibling rivalry, and does not let the spirit die for a moment. Both Sanya Malhotra and Radhika Madan have done a great job of perfecting their accent and the clear, loud disdain for each other. Though it might take some time getting used to their animosity, Bhardwaj’s crisp direction makes sure you do not lose track of the nutty comic tone and underlying story lines.
Analysis :
3.5/5
The movie is gripping and Bhardwaj tries to make powerful metaphors , questing ever famous feudswhy did they even start in the first place ? why can we not just be together in peace ? can a Jhappi solve everything? Every frame is authentic and the storyline might get a little too loud and nonsensical at times but it continues to stay honest to its narrative throughout.it could have been shorter and a little less repetitive but its still a good movie in its right.
Final Word: Pataakha stands true to its name where it is a complete cracker of a movie and manages to makes us laugh and cry and be truly believable. The characters are raw and enigmatic and the movie is unlike Bollywood has ever experienced before. NOVEMBER 2018 | WWW.WISHESH.NET

A few minutes into the movie, Veera Raghava (Jr NTR) arrives in a train at his native, where violence has become a way of life. The train is stopped far away from the station anticipating an attack on him from the rival group-led by Obaa (Jagapati Babu). The rivalry between the two gangs began about 30 years ago over a gamble gone sour. The source of the bottomless vengeance that has cost lives for at least three generations is Rs 5. Obaa was short of Rs 5 to settle the money he lost in the gamble. His playmate runs his mouth and 146 gets beheaded. The incident leads to a series of killings and the enmity grows stronger as Obaa and Narappa slaughter each others father.
Analysis : Though the movie gets a little preachy at times, the message received is clear.it explores topics such as values of life and gives relevance to emotions. Babu and Aravindha , have both performed really well. The movie could have been a bit more succinct to have a more profound impact, but the message is clear.
Final Word: Trivikram’s fascination for mythology lends well with the theme and the treatment scores over his indulgence this time. And Thaman’s evolution as a composer truly benefits the film. The movie is emotional camouflaged as something commercial, overall a different offering and something that you can enjoy and think about atleast once in the theatre. WWW.WISHESH.NET | NOVEMBER 2018

Analysis : Savyasachi starts on an interesting note and it narrates about vanishing twin syndrome. The first half of the film banks completely on entertainment and romance. On the whole the first half of Savyasachi makes a decent one time watch.

The second half of Savyasachi falls short of expectations because of the stale entertainment and the unwanted drama. The cat and mouse race between Naga Chaitanya and R Madhavan is not so gripping and the narration has been extremely predictable. The songs have been decent and the climax episodes have been shot well. On the whole,
