Bhagat Singh 28 September 1907 - 23 March 1931
At the age of 23, if anyone was smiling just before he was being hanged to death, it was Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He was born September 27, 1907 in the village Banga of Layalpur to Mata Vidyavati and Sardar Kishan Singh. His uncle, Sardar Ajit Singh, as well as his father, were great freedom fighters, so Bhagat Singh grew up in a patriotic atmosphere. Ajit Singh established the Indian Patriots’ Association, along with Syed Haidar Raza, to organize the peasants against the Chenab Canal Colony Bill. He also established the secret organization, the Bharat Mata Society.
‘‘
At an early age, Bhagat Singh started dreaming of uprooting the British empire. Never afraid of fighting during his childhood, he thought of “growing guns in the fields,” so that he could fight against the British. The Ghadar Movement left a deep imprint on his mind. Kartar Sing Sarabha, hanged at the age of 19, became his hero. The massacre at Jallianwala Bagh on April 13, 1919 drove him to go to Amritsar, where he kissed the earth sanctified by the martyrs’ blood and brought back home a little of the soaked soil. He studied in the D.A.V. School in Lahore. At the age of 16, he used to wonder why so many Indians could not drive away these fistful of invaders.
The aim of life is no more to control the mind, but to develop it harmoniously; not to achieve salvation here after, but to make the best use of it here below; and not to realise truth, beauty and good only in contemplation, but also in the actual experience of daily life; social progress depends not upon the ennoblement of the few but on the enrichment of democracy; universal brotherhood can be achieved only when there is an equality of opportunity - of opportunity in the social, political and individual life.” — from Bhagat Singh’s prison diary

NARENDRA MODI DELIVERS A HIT SHOW AT MADISON SQUARE Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a rousing speech to the NRI’s at the Madison Square Gardens in New York. A crowd of 18,000 Indian Americans had gathered there with hope to see PM Modi in flesh and listen to his trademark speech, which never fails to enthuse his audience.
M
The Madison Square’s event was a historic one as the tickets were already sold out, something that rock stars dream of. And Modi turned out to be no less than a rock-star, he had a delirious crowd chanting “Modi Modi” and eating out of his hands. For the Indian community settled down in the US, it was a historic event - not for what Mr. Modi had to say, but because they got to see the PM himself in flesh.
PM Modi delivered his trademark speech – in extempore, ‘desi’ style with some intermittent jokes, some bragging about Mangalyaan and a bit of self-deprecation by refering to himself as ‘chaiwala’. He had the crowd eating out of his hands.
The cheering NRIs got the gift of ‘Visas on arrival’ from PM Modi. There would be no need for them to keep reporting at the police station when they visit India for a long-term stay. He also removed all confusions related to OCI and PIO cards. OCI cards will be valid for a lifetime. He thanked the Modi-frenzy crowd for the rousing welcome. Modi said no Indian leader had ever received such love and promised to repay them for it by building an India of their dreams.

Modi indulged in self-deprecation while refering to the ‘chaiwala’ tag labelled on him during election campaigns. Mr Modi said people ask for a big vision. But he reached where he is by selling tea. He called himself a “very modest man”, who has plans to do “big things for modest people”. He promised the crowd that his government would build more toilets and clean the river Ganga. The Indian prime minister reminded his NRI friends about Mahatma Gandhi’s upcoming centenary. India’s most famous ‘NRI’ Mohandas Gandhi return to India in 1915 and then launched a movement for India’s freedom. Mr Modi urged Indian Americans and Indians in America to take part in India’s ‘ jan andolan’ for ‘vikaas’ in 2015. All they need to do is to visit MyGov website and give their suggestions. PM Modi asked his audience to sell India more than serving India. And how? Each Indian-American can try and persuade at least 5 non-Indian families to visit India. And those who come to India will have the visa on arrival for smooth entry and exit. The NRI’s who came to see PM Narendra Modi payed more than $1001 to hear the charismatic BJP leader speak at the Madison Square. The event had some entertainment as well – some Gujarati folk dance, AR Rahman’s music and Kavita Krishanmurthy cooing Made in India.

KEM CHO MR. PRIME MINISTER
M October, 2014
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a five-day US trip to strengthen the Indo-US relationship. Ahead of the summit level talks between the head of the two democratic nations, US President Barack Obama hosted a private dinner for PM Modi at the White House on Monday.
President Obama, known for his politeness and reserved persona, greeted Modi in Gujarati, the mother tongue of the Prime Minister. He said “Kem Chho?”, which means ‘how are you?’. President Obama welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the door of the White House with: ‘Khem Cho Mr Prime Minister’. The Gujarati welcome was an attempt to break the ice between Obama and Modi. And it definitely served its purpose. The dinner, which has an informal ambiance, was the first opportunity for the two leaders to interact with each other. However, the First Lady Michelle Obama was not present at the private dinner.
The two leaders had 20 other attendees at the dinner. From the US side the dinner attendees included Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Advisor Susan Rice. While the Indian side included External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Indian Ambassador to the US, S Jaishankar. PM Modi has not been consuming anything other than lemonade and tea, ever since he arrived in the US. The Indian PM is currently fasting due to ongoing Navratri festival, which Mr. Modi has been observing for the last 40
years. The Indian contingent had reportedly requested the US not to include non-vegetarian dishes during the private dinner keeping in mind the sensitivities of PM Modi, who is observing Navratri fasts. The US government had taken the request positively, according to reports. President Obama received PM Modi at the South Gate of the White House. The private dinner was hosted in Blue Room of the President’s official residence. The Blue Room is used for receptions and receiving lines, and occasionally for small dinners.

SCOTLAND SAYS NO TO INDEPENDENCE People of Scotland have rejected independence from the United Kingdom, much to the relief of Prime Minister David Cameron. On Friday the Scots rejected independence in a historic referendum that decided to remain together in a 307-year-old union with the UK.
The victory margin is nearly three points greater than what was anticipated by the final opinion polls. Official results confirmed that 30 out of Scotland’s 32 council areas have declared the “No” side, giving the supporters of no a lead of 1,877,252 votes to 1,512,688. The total needed for winning was 1,852,828 and nationally. The margin of victory for the ‘No’ side is almost 55 % to 45 %. The historic referendum was the culmination of a twoyear campaign. After the overwhelming victory of ‘No’ side it’s expected that talks related to devolution of more powers to Scotland will begin soon. Scotland became a part of United Kingdom in 1707. Glasgow, which is the largest council area in Scotland and Britain’s third largest city, was in favour of independence, with 194,779 voting for YES to 169,347 voting for NO. Even Dundee, West Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire voted in
favour of YES. Scotland’s capital Edinburgh rejected independence by 194,638 to 123,927 votes. Also Aberdeen City did not favour independence and majority voted for “No”, with a margin of of over 20,000 votes. On Thursday, Scots had queued up to register their vote in the historic referendum which was to decide the future of Scotland – whether it would remain part of UK or exist as an independent country.
ISLAMIC STATE MILITANTS BAN MATHS, SOCIAL STUDIES FOR CHILDREN Thousands of children in swaths of war-torn Syria, now controlled by dreaded Islamic State militants, can no longer study maths or social studies under new diktats issued by the jihadists. While sports is banned, the children will not be allowed to learn about elections and democracy. Instead, the children will be subjected to the teachings of the radical Islamist group. And any teacher who dares to break the rules “will be punished.” ISIS announced its new educational demands in fliers posted on billboards and on street poles, CNN reported. The Sunni militant group has captured a slew of Syrian and Iraqi cities in recent months as it tries to establish a caliphate, or Islamic state, spanning Sunni parts of both countries. In the letter, IS said alternative courses will be added. It also said teachers must erase the phrase Syrian Arab Republic -- the official name of Syria -- and replace it with Islamic State.
Voters had to make a simple choice - “Yes” or “No” - to the question: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” For the historic referendum almost 97 % of the electorate - 4,285,323 people - were registered for voting at 2,608 polling booths all over the country.
Educators cannot teach nationalistic and ethnic ideology and must instead teach “the belonging to Islam ... and to denounce infidelity and infidels.” Books cannot include any reference to evolution. And teachers must say that the laws of physics and chemistry “are due to Allah’s rules and laws.” The letter ends with a firm warning: “This is an obligatory announcement, and all violators will be punished.”
An official statement on the referendum will be made in a live televised address after the final result.
The brutal advances of ISIS in Syria come as the country grapples with a three-year civil war with no clear victor in sight. The UN estimates more than 190,000 people have died in the violence between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and rebels seeking an end to four decades of al-Assad family rule.

ISRAEL AND PALESTINE SIGN AGREEMENT TO REBUILD GAZA The United Nations on Tuesday announced an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority on the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip, devastated in the recent Israeli military offensive.
The pact will allow urgent reconstruction work to be carried out in Gaza, while ensuring that materials entering the area will not be used for other purposes, Robert Serry, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said The agreement “provides security assurances through UN monitoring that these materials will not be diverted from their entirely civilian purposes,” Serry said, alluding to Israel’s charge that Hamas has used building materials to construct tunnels to infiltrate Israel.
Serry said he hoped the agreement would be up and running as soon as possible and called it “an important step” toward the goal of ending the restrictions imposed by Israel as well as a “signal of hope for the people of Gaza.” Serry, who visited Gaza last week, told the Security Council Tuesday that he observed truly shocking levels of destruction of infrastructure, hospitals and schools as well as totally demolished neighborhoods. Some 18,000 homes were destroyed or significantly
damaged during the Israeli offensive, leaving around 100,000 people homeless. It is estimated that the cost of reconstruction in Gaza would be at least $4 billion, but it could go as high as $12 billion, the coordinator of the UN Agency for Trade and Development, Mahmoud al-Khafif, said. Israel bombed and shelled Gaza repeatedly over the course of 50 days, beginning July 8, killing 2,140 Palestinians and wounding 11,000 more. Two-thirds of the casualties were civilians, according to figures from Gaza’s Health Ministry.
NEW YORK SETTLES WITH DIPLOMAT’S DAUGHTER The city of New York has agreed to pay $225,000 to an Indian diplomat’s then schoolgoing daughter who was handcuffed and jailed for a day three years ago on the false suspicion of sending obscene emails to her teachers. Krittika Biswas, then 18, had moved a lawsuit seeking $1.5 million in damages for her wrongful imprisonment and suspension from John Browne High School, Queens. Following the settlement offer, she has agreed to drop
www.wishesh.com
all the claims against the city, its board of education and the Manhattan officers who had arrested and detained her in February 2011. Krittika’s lawyer Ravi Batra claimed “vindication” of the “honour” of his client as well as of India and its diplomats at large. The settlement acknowledges that Krittika was an “honor student” at the time of her “false arrest”. Batra said Krittika, who is now in India, joined him in “thanking”the Indian American
community, former ambassadors Prabhu Dayal and Meera Shanker, and her former classmates and teachers for their “emotional and moral support”. Krittika’s lawsuit stated that she had been discriminated against and falsely accused of sending “offensive and sexually threatening” emails because of her ethnicity. An investigation after her arrest had found that another student had sent the emails but that student was not arrested or
criminally charged. This, Batra said, was “proof of foul, discriminatory, (and) disparate treatment” of Krittika “despite her actual innocence”. The defendants had sought dismissal of the lawsuit but an appeals court refused to do so, saying their arguments were “without merit”. Batra said he had cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming US visit and advised Krittika and her family that a “just resolution” of the case would be an appropriate move.

DOORDARSHAN ANCHOR SACKED FOR MISPRONOUNCING XI JINPING AS “ELEVEN JINPING” The gaffe happened during a late night show on Wednesday. While anchoring the late night bulletin on DD News, an anchor mispronounced Chinese President Xi Jinping’s name as ‘Eleven’ Jinping, confusing Xi with the Roman numerical eleven. We think she hadn’t done her homework well and naturally the name didn’t register in her mind. The news anchor, a novice, was sacked following that. She was put on the show as the main anchors of DD refused to be a part of the late night broadcasts. President Xi Jinping, who is on a threeday visit bi-lateral visit to India, signed 12 key bilateral documents promising India investments worth $30 billion. This, however, isn’t the only time the media has got his name wrong. Even the French media has goofed up “Xi” a couple of times in the past. Jawahar Sircar, the CEO of Prasar Bharti,
confirmed to Quartz that they have sacked the newsreader. “It’s true, we have sacked the concerned newsreader. We are putting systems in place to make sure such things don’t happen in future,” he said. “It is an unpardonable mistake,” a senior official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity, saying the anchor was employed on a casual basis. “We have debarred her from news reading for a few months.”
Television bloopers aren’t anything new and most often tend to pass the headlines. But when you happen to bungle the name of a visiting head of state wrong, especially when you are country’s public broadcaster, embarrassment is inevitable.
WHAT DOES THE ‘MAKE IN INDIA’ LOGO STAND FOR? Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off his “Make in India” campaign with a bang and a logo that got everyone wondering. Launching the logo, Modi said that “Make-in-India” mission is a lion’s step to attract companies to India. The logo encapsulating the silhouette of a lion on the prowl is entirely made of cogs. This signifies
manufacturing, strength and national pride. The national emblem of India, Ashok Chakra, has four lions. In Indian folklore, the lion denotes the attainment of enlightenment, besides representing power, courage, pride and confidence. The lion logo adorns the brand new website - makeinindia.com - for the campaign and all its brochures.
The website is a ready reckoner for data on 25 sectors that are looking to attract companies to India. INDIAN INDUSTRIALIST PAYS 8.5. LAKH JUST FOR A NUMBER PLATE Number plates come at a price, at least if you want an exclusive one. Indian industrialist LD Mittal didn’t mind paying Rs. 8.5 lakh just for a number plate. Sonalika Group Chairman LD Mittal paid a whopping Rs. 8.5 lakh at a public auction for a fancy number plate. The number 0001 is for the newly launched CH-01-AZ series that was auctioned by Chandigarh’s Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) office. But wait, LD Mittal is not the only one who would bid an exorbitant amount just for a number plate. Last year one bidder paid Rs. 9.1 lakh for the series CH-01-AT 0001.
GIVE US BRIDES, WE’LL VOTE FOR YOU: HARYANA VILLAGERS Haryana’s political class could never have dreamt that voters would make such demand. Till the last election voters had wanted employment, civic amenities and lower food price. But this time voters are demanding brides in lieu of their votes to the candidates. The highly skewed sex ratio is now showing its impact and Haryana’s political leaders are now bearing the brunt of this social malice. The prevailing poor sex ratio in the state has forced many to remain bachelors. Now the unmarried men of Jind

Mittal is the highest bidder for a fancy number since May 2013, according to RLA officials. The fancy number plate will be used for a new Mercedes S series car owned by International Tractors Ltd, which is the flagship company of Sonalika Group. This year LD Mittal debuted into the Forbes billionaire list for the first time. His net worth was valued at $1.1 billion in March by the Forbes magazine. Mr Mittal was ranked 1,465 in the list of richest people on Earth. The industrialist has worked for more than 40 years in the public sector. Locals say that the demand for brides has risen due to marriage bureaus, which have cropp ed up all over the place. These bureaus charge a hefty amount for arranging brides, which are beyond the reach of a poor man. A resident of Uchana constituency says some men from Jind have married women from other states but not all families are willing to accept this. The voters have no demand other than brides for themselves, he added. Hopefully the other northern states will learn their lesson from the situation in Haryana. After all both men and women have a purpose in civil society and any tampering with nature’s balance will lead to a highly-skewed sex ratio, just like what is hapening in Jind district.

NRI INVESTMENT IN INDIAN REALTY MAY RISE 35%: SURVEY To tap the growing interest, which comes at a time when the global economy is stabilising and India is showing strong signs of revival, real estate companies here are pulling out all the stops by conducting property shows, exhibitions and opening overseas representative offices. Property developers are expecting a 35 percent surge in real estate enquiries from NRIs (non-resident Indians) with Bangalore turning out to be a favourite, according to a survey by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham). OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEGAL IMMIGRATION The first step in legally immigrating to the United States is to obtain an immigrant visa. Most immigrants obtain visas through the sponsorship of close family members or employers. Others qualify for visas as asylees or refugees, fleeing persecution in their home countries. Of all others wishing to come, only the luckiest few will have a chance to do so legally; those coming from countries like Mexico will have virtually no opportunity whatsoever. Below are the four most common ways of obtaining an immigrant visa:
1
FAMILY-BASED
A U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident (a “green card” holder) sponsors a family member for immigration. Waiting periods for obtaining such visas vary depending on the clos eness of the family relationship, and can be lengthy, because a limited number of visas are available each year.
2
EMPLOYMENT BASED
Employers sponsor a potential employee for immigration; in select cases extraordinarilyqualified immigrants may immigrate without an employer-sponsor. Employer sponsors must demonstrate that there are an insufficien t number of qualified workers available in the United States to meet their need. The wait can last 7 to 8 years because of the limited number of visas.
AND REFUGEE 3 ASYLUM STATUS These protections are available to people who are unable or unwilling to return to their home countries because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. In general, asylee status is granted in the United States and refugee status is granted outside of it.
* Some countries of origin, including Mexico, China, and the Philippines, have more restrictive visa availabilities.
4
DIVERSITY LOTTERY
For those who don’t have a family member or employer to sponsor them, the Diversity Lottery may be an option. Only 50,000 winners are granted visas annually in this process. Not everyone is eligible to enter the lottery: The program aims to increase immigration from underr epresented countries, so each year the State Department issues a list of those countries whose citizens may not apply. For 2008, immigrants from the following countries are excluded from the visa lottery: Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. IMMIGRATION FAQS By HUMERA SUBHANI
O
bama considering executive action on immigration President Obama is considering a big move which White House officials have been suggesting will come by the end of this summer halting deportations for as many as five million people who entered the United States illegally and authorizing them to remain legally in this country, at least temporarily (deferred action). Those given legal status would have to be closely related to U.S. citizens, be residents of the United States for a few years, and have no criminal records. He has already ordered a halt to deportations of young illegal immigrants who came to the United States with their arents, which was called DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The new approach could expand the legalization to include a large number of older people. The immigration issue has grown more urgent, because of a humanitarian crisis caused by the influx of tens of thousands of unaccompanied young people from Central America across the U.S. border. In addition, Congress has blocked so much of the President’s legislation that it is quite possibly the only way that he can enact any changes to Immigration policies.

It was later published in the United States as Swimming Lessons and Other Stories from Firozsha Baag. The book consists of 11 short stories, all set within one apartment complex in modern-day Mumbai. This volume contains the oft-anthologized story, “Swimming Lessons.” When his second book, the novel Such a Long Journey, was published in 1991, it won the Governor General’s Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book, and the W.H. and was shortlisted for the 1996 Booker prize. In 2002, Mistry cancelled his United States book tour for his novel Family Matters (2002) because he and his wife were targeted by security agents at every airport he visited, apparently because Mistry appeared to be Muslim. Mistry reported that on his first flight of the tour, “we were greeted by a ticket agent who cheerfully told us we had been selected randomly for a special security check. Then it began to happen at every single stop, at every single airport. The random process took on a 100 percent certitude.” His publisher issued a statement that said, “As a person of colour [Mistry] was stopped repeatedly and rudely at each airport along the way—to the point where the humiliation ... had become unbearable.” Family Matters is a consideration of the difficulties that come with ageing, which Mistry returned to in 2008 with the short fiction The Scream (published as a separate volume, in support of World Literacy of Canada, with illustrations by Tony Urquhart). His books portray diverse facets of Indian socioeconomic life; as well as Parsi Zoroastrian life, customs, and religion. Many of his writings are markedly “Indo-nostalgic”.

The intriguing art of Henna
W
henever there is any happy occasion or festivity, the Indian women celebrate it by applying henna designs on their hands and feet. Apart from serving the role of a body art, applying henna is also considered as very auspicious. Heena application is a complex art and the artist needs to be proficient to be able to paint intricate designs swiftly. Also called Mehndi, one can prepare the henna by making a paste out of the henna powder available in the markets across India. Traditionally, it is made by grinding the leaves of the henna tree to a paste.

hile using mehendi leaves, it should be ensured that they are not whole and unbroken after grinding. Henna does leave its deep red-brown stain on the skin until the Lawson molecules are not released from the leaf and this happens only when the leaves are properly grinded. So, people prefer using the henna powder for this form of body art. You need to mix henna powder with lemon juice, strong tea or other mildly acidic liquid, apply this paste and leave it on for about 10 hours to dry. Later, you can scrap it off with a blunt knife or a spoon.
I
S
ince mehndi is considered lucky, in our country, its application on the hands and feet of a bride is mandatory. Henna artists usually apply the most complex mehndi patterns and designs on the bride as these look the loveliest. The traditional Indian henna has been glammed up lately with the use of glitters and other such things. People wear them to parties and get-togethers. But it’s the traditional henna that is widely worn by most people because it is much cheaper and looks much more beautiful.
n India, henna artists generally belong from the Nai (barber) caste. The history of mehendi tells us that the knowledge or skill of its application is normally passed down from one generation to another. Mehendi application also provides a source of income to many women who are not allowed to work outside. All happy occasions in India, be it birth, weddings or religious ceremonies; include henna application as part of the celebration.

THE ART OF
Mithila Magic
Mithila painting, as a domestic ritual activity, was unknown to the outside world until the massive Bihar earthquake of 1934. House walls had tumbled down, and the British colonial officer in Madhubani District, William G. Archer, inspecting the damage “discovered” the paintings on the newly exposed interior walls of homes.
A
rcher - later to become the South Asia Curator at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum - was stunned by the beauty of the paintings and similarities to the work of modern Western artists like Klee, Miro, and Picasso. During the 1930s he took black and white photos of some of these paintings, the earliest images we have of them. Then in a 1949 article in the Indian art journal, Marg, he brought the wall paintings to public attention.

hen a second natural disaster, a severe draught in the late 1960s, prompted the All India Handicrafts Board to encourage a few upper caste women in villages around Madhubani town to transfer their ritual wall paintings to paper as an income generating project. Drawing on the region’s rich visual culture, contrasting “line painting” and “color painting” traditions, and their individual talents, several of these women turned out to be superb artists. Four of them were soon representing India in cultural fairs in Europe, Russia, and the USA. Their national and international recognition prompted many other women from many other castes - including harijans or dalits, the ex”untouchables” - to begin painting on paper as well.

By the late 1970s, the popular success of the paintings - aesthetically distinct from other Indian painting traditions - was drawing dealers from New Delhi offering minimal prices for mass produced paintings of the most popular divinities and three familiar scenes from the Ramayana. Out of poverty, many painters complied with the dealers’ demands, and produced the rapid and repetitious images known as “Madhubani paintings.” Nevertheless, with the encouragement of a number of outsiders - both Indian and foreign - other artists working within the same aesthetic traditions continued to produce the highly crafted, deeply individual and increasingly diverse work, now known as “Mithila Painting.”

Pakistani actor Fawad Khan made his debut into Bollywood with ‘Khoobsurat’. The film has Sonam Kapoor as his lead actress. ‘Khoobsurat’ is a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s hit film staring Rekha in the 1980s. We bring you excerpts from an interview with Fawad Khan on his experience about the film and how it happened. Q: What was it like working in your first Bollywood film? A: This is certainly not the first Bollywood project that was offered to me. Way back in 2008, I was supposed to fly down to Mumbai to meet several producers and directors, but I wasn’t able to make it. When Khoobsurat came along, there was no way I could say no. I mean, it was the chance to meet and work with a legend such as Anil Kapoor. Q: How did Khoobsurat happen? A: It was a pretty straightforward process. The casting director had seen my work. She sent it to AKFC (Anil Kapoor Film Company), they called me down to Mumbai and we did a couple of readings. I was signed on for the film, and then we finalized the dates for the shoot. Q: Did you have fun working with Sonam Kapoor? A: Absolutely, everyone from the Kapoor family. I have to say that Anil Kapoor Sahab, Rhea and Sonam have treated me like family, and have really looked after me here. Sonam especially was very sweet and accommodating. If my sugar was low sometimes, she would go and get something for me even though she had 10 people around her to get it, but it only shows how much they cared for me, and treated me like family. I was in an alien environment with new people and you do get conscious. But they all made me really comfortable. Q: What do you think of Rekha, who played the female lead, in the original Khoobsurat? A: I am a big fan of Rekhaji. I love her movies, especially Khoon Bhari Maang. She is an embodiment of sexiness. Q: How did you prepare for your role? A: I saw the original film as part of my homework. It is a timeless classic but our film is different. Rakesh Roshan played the role of a doctor and I play a Rajput prince, so it’s different in a way. Q: You are starting to become popular with a lot of girls here. How do you feel about that? A: Honestly, I blush like a little boy. It’s flattering to have a crazy fan experience but it’s extremely embarrassing at the same time. It came as a surprise when I experienced similar fanatical fan moments in India, which was a common thing back in Pakistan. Q: Finally, what was your experience like working in Khoobsurat? A: It’s been an absolutely amazing experience. Everyone has been so welcoming and the film’s unit especially has been just like family. On my birthday, for instance, we were still shooting and I couldn’t go back home to Pakistan. The unit decided that we would break at midnight to cut a cake and then carry on shooting. At midnight, it turned out that not only did they have a cake, but they had contacted my family and recorded video messages from them for my birthday, which they played back for me. I was just so overwhelmed. That was such a thoughtful thing to do. www.wishesh.com

Sonam Kapoor sheds all inhibitions to shake a leg to the song ‘Engine Ki Seeti’ in ‘Khoobsurat’. The song shows Sonam, the royal misfit, dancing to the peppy number. The pretty, charming and vivacious Mili dances to the track “Engine ki seeti me maaro bum dole...” The track, inspired from a Rajasthani folk song, has been sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Resmi Sateesh. Sneha Khanwalkar has composed music for this song. Sonam has done full justice to the naughty lyrics and peppy tune of Engine Ki Seeti. The pretty actress is seen dancing in the big screen after a long gap. The track shows her wild and sensuous side in the peppy number. Sonam plays the role of Mili, who is shown grooving like no one’s watching. It’s really inspiring and makes you want to shake a leg like her. The situation in the music video is similar, where Mili is joined by the palace workers and servants.

PERFORMANCE
FASHIONISTA SONAM IS A STYLE ICON AND SHE DEFINITELY LOOKS GLAMOROUS IN THE FILM. SHE IS ALSO CAPABLE OF MAKING THE FILM COLOURFUL AND VISUALLY APPEALING, BUT THEN THAT IS WHAT SHE IS LIMITED TOO. THE ACTRESS STILL NEEDS TO WORK EXTREMELY HARD ON HER ACTING SKILLS ESPECIALLY HER DIALOGUE DELIVERY. SHE ALSO OVERDOES THE ENTHUSIASM IN A FEW SEQUENCES. KIRRON KHER IS HILARIOUS IN HER PART OF A PUNJABI MOTHER WHICH ALSO HAPPENS TO BE HER FORTE. PAKISTANI ACTOR FAWAD KHAN’S FEMALE FAN FOLLOWING WOULDN’T BE DISAPPOINTED AT ALL AS THE ACTOR IS AN EXCELLENT ACTOR AND LOOKS HOT. THE ROYAL CHARACTER DEFINITELY SUITS HIS PERSONALITY. EVEN THOUGH THE STORY IN THIS MODERN DAY REMAKE IS NOWHERE CLOSE TO THE ORIGINAL, THE PLOT AND THE CHARACTERS ARE KEPT THE SAME BY THE DIRECTOR, BUT IN A FRESH AND LIVELY MANNER. THE FILM’S EDITING IS HIDEOUS. THE SCREENPLAY IS FINE AND IS ENGAGING AND INTERESTING IN PARTS. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS BEAUTIFUL AS THE CAMERA COVERS THE ROYAL PALACES AND THE STREETS OF RAJASTHAN PERFECTLY. SHASHANK’S DIRECTION IS OK AND COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BETTER. HOWEVER, THE GOOD PART IS THAT THE FILMMAKER HAS TRIED TO MAKE THE FILM AS LIGHT-HEARTED AS POSSIBLE. www.wishesh.com

Citrus fruits are known to have a powerful detox capability, therefore if you are looking for foods to help you purge all the toxins that have gathered inside you over the months then you must certainly include them in your detox juice. High-fiber root foods such as ginger, carrots or apples are also highly recommended for these juices, as they are known to also support the correct functioning of your digestive tract, not to mention the wealth of antioxidants that they deliver to your body.
As you may know already, antioxidants are essential as they protect your body from the negative effects of the free radicals that can wreak havoc on your health if you allow them two. One eight ounce glass of detox juice per week will certainly keep all these problems far away from you! These juices have a double benefit while they help your body get rid of the toxins, chemicals and all the dangerous substances that have accumulated inside your intestines, they also help you lose weight in the fastest and most natural way. THE WITTY STORIE
AKBAR-BIRBAL
Akbar’s court was famous for the witty question answer sessions between the Emperor himself, and his clever minister Birbal. On one such occasion - Akbar asked his courtiers whether they could tell the difference between truth and untruth within three words. All the courtiers started racking their brains to search for the three most appropriate words in which they could tell the difference between the truth and the untruth. But, enough time passed and none of them could come up with an answer. Birbal was also present in the court, but kept mum. The Emperor asked him, “What about you, Birbal? Why are you so silent?” “Your Majesty!” Birbal politely replied, “I was giving a chance to others first. In my opinion, the right answer would be: Four fingers.” The Emperor asked Birbal, “How is that, Birbal? Explain it to all!” “Yes,
Your Majesty, four fingers is the difference between truth and untruth. What your eyes see is truth, and what your ears hear, may be false.” “I agree with that, but why did you say that the difference between truth and untruth is four fingers?” Akbar said. Birbal bowed and said, “Four fingers is the distance between one’s eyes and one’s ears, Your Majesty!” Akbar was very astonished to hear Birbal’s well thought reply.

courtiers to shorten it without touching it. None of the courtiers could think of a way to shorten the line without touching it. Then Birbal came forward and drew another longer line just below it. This is how Birbal shortened the Emperor’s line. On another occasion- One day, Emperor Akbar asked his courtiers, “What is that thing which sun and moon cannot see but others can see?” All the courtiers kept scratching their heads but could not come up with a suitable answer. Finally, Emperor Akbar asked Birbal, “Birbal, I am sure that you must have an answer for my question.” Birbal smiled and said, “It is darkness, Huzoor.”

IS FEAR GOOD FOR KIDS?
Children
are like soft clay, very, very impressionable.
E
veryone, from the youngest child to the oldest adult, experiences anxieties and fears at one time or another. Feeling anxious in a particularly uncomfortable situation never feels very good. However, with kids, such feelings are not only normal, they’re also necessary. Dealing with anxieties can prepare young people to handle the unsettling experiences and challenging situations of life.

Anxiety is defined as “apprehension without apparent cause.” It usually occurs when there’s no immediate threat to a person’s safety or well-being, but the threat feels real.
Kids

“butterflies” in the stomach soon follow. However, a little bit of anxiety can actually help people stay alert and focused.
Having fears or anxieties about certain things can also be helpful because it makes Anxiety makes someone want to escape the kids behave in a safe way. For example, a situation — fast. The heart beats quickly, kid with a fear of fire would avoid playing the body might begin to perspire, and with matches.
The nature of anxieties and fears change as kids grow and develop: Babies experience stranger anxiety, clinging to parents when confronted by people they don’t recognize. Toddlers around 10 to 18 months old experience separation anxiety, becoming emotionally distressed when one or both parents leave. Kids ages 4 through 6 have anxiety about things that aren’t based in reality, such as fears of monsters and ghosts. Kids ages 7 through 12 often have fears that reflect real circumstances that may happen to them, such as bodily injury and natural disaster. As kids grow, one fear may disappear or replace another. For example, a child who couldn’t sleep with the light off at age 5 may enjoy a ghost story at a slumber party years later. And some fears may extend www.wishesh.com
only to one particular kind of stimulus. In other words, a child may want to pet a lion at the zoo but wouldn’t dream of going near the neighbor’s dog.

TRAVELING IN THE TIMES OF EBOLA! With world’s most dangerous viral epidemic, the Ebola virus, raging through the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra, Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and Senegal, traveling overseas has now become an international concern.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has deemed this as the most deadliest outbreak of the virus since it’s discovery in 1976. The disease isn’t just highly contagious, but also untreatable, since no vaccine, treatment or any other medical breakthrough has been found on it yet. As a result, there has been a lot of worry and speculation among
international travelers about just what the disease is, how it spreads, and who is in danger. Advisories have already warned travelers heading to Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and other West African nations. However, the WHO revealed that “Air travel, even from Ebola-affected countries, is low-risk for Ebola transmission.”
So what really is this dreaded Ebola virus disease (EVD) that everyone is talking about? For one, it is a kind of severe viral haemorrhagic fever that blocks the clotting of blood. It’s marked by sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, body rash, and impaired kidney and liver functions. The virus has already claimed over 1,145 lives is far. The Zaire Ebola, responsible for the current outbreak, is the most dangerous. The patients has a 90 per cent chance of dying if untreated and at least 50 per cent even if promptly treated. The Ebola virus can incubate in a host’s body for nearly three weeks before the symptoms begin to show, which means an infected individual can carry it for a while without knowing. EVD is highly infectious and transmitted easily through direct contact with the blood, secretions, other bodily fluids, or organs of infected people who are exhibiting the symptoms above.
www.wishesh.com
October, 2014
So does the outbreak mean that we should not travel? In the past years, we have had viral epidemics like avian influenza (H7N9) in China, Chikungunya in the Caribbean and Americas, and MERS or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in the Middle East.So there isn’t anything to panic about. Although you have to be extremely cautious. The best part is that Ebola is not transmitted through respiratory droplets and it is extremely unlikely that it can be contracted from fellow passengers on an airplane or at an airport by merely breathing in the same air. However, before making any travel plans, check the websites of WHO (who.int) and the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov/travel) for their travel advisories on precautions to take for the region you’re traveling to. You must maintain personal hygiene like washing your hands frequently. You must also avoid coming in contact with bodily fluids of a person or animal suspected of having or having died from the illness. While this might look like a dire situation, travelers must stay well informed and make sensible and hygienic choices to stay healthy and disease-free while touring any place.

Suno Suno is always a refreshing collection to see because it never sticks to the go-to fall palette of blacks, navys, greys and nudes. Tommy Hilfiger The Tommy Hilfiger show was like a visit to a ski resort where everyone happened to be gorgeous: convenient, right? All of the girls marched to ‘60s tunes in shearling bomber jackets, patched jeans, and pleated skirts. With beanies topping off every look, it was very clear what the required dress code is to be a part of this crew. It’s okay if you don’t have the legs, you can still have the style.
Rosie Assoulin New York-based designer Rosie Assoulin knows a thing or two about making clothes for the modern woman. This season she pulled out all the stops, outfitting a dream wardrobe for the every girl. Clean-cut separates for work? No problem. An evening gown for a charity event? She’s got it. And something a little more elegant to run errands in? Well how about a cashmere sweatsuit? That’s right, she has one. www.wishesh.com

Thakoon Thakoon’s fall collection was a virtual paradise. The brightest of colors set alongside larger-than-life floral prints were some of the most exciting things on the runway this season. The silhouettes were also carefully crafted for the urban woman: sweaters that double as outerwear staples, dresses topped with knits, and Thakoon’s signature feminine aesthetic paired with fuchsia for fall. Bring it on.
Proenza Schouler Proenza Schouler never disappoints on the runway. Following a stellar spring collection that literally shone with gold and silver metallics, the boys transitioned to a no-nonsense tough girl look for fall. Intricate and exciting patterns mixed together to produce a high-energy collection that does what Proenza Schouler does best: marry luxury and street cred. www.wishesh.com

Marc by Marc Jacobs The fresh blood at Marc by Marc Jacobs—now under the creative direction of Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley—was most welcome. Even Marc Jacobs himself took a front row seat. It was one of the most exciting shows this season. Full skirts, bow details, and a futuristic vibe characterized the new Marc by Marc girl. After seeing this collection, I would definitely like to declare myself one.
Delpozo Josep Font breathes such wonderful fresh air into the New York fashion scene. With as much romanticism and aspirational beauty as any of the Parisian shows, Delpozo is never one to miss. This season, on the 38th floor of a midtown skyscraper boasting panoramic views of New York, a live band played while the models did not walk, but floated down the runway in embellished gowns of couture quality. www.wishesh.com

Sally LaPointe New kid on the block, Sally LaPointe made the case for her spot on the New York fashion scene with an incredible fall collection. Fur details, jumpsuits, and exaggerated turtlenecks: These are the makings of a dream wardrobe. I could imagine an occasion to wear almost every piece, and that’s an important thing for a New York woman.
Thom Browne Thom Browne’s mystical fall collection was a religious experience. Quite literally, he took us to church. The gold leaf details on jackets, skyhigh mules and Astrakhan outerwear solidified the fact that the fashion industry will be worshiping at the altar of Thom Browne for a long while.

WORLD HEART DAY: 10 TIPS FOR A ROCK-SOLID HEART
Y
our lifestyle choices may be affecting your heart’s health in more ways than you can imagine. With World Heart Day being observed yesterday, the guide has curated set of useful activities to help your bring back to shape. 1. Eat more fruit and vegetables Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. 2. Be physically active. Exercise daily It can build endurance, control blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, aid in weight control and reduce your risk of developing diabetes. Even 30 minutes of brisk activity a day can lower blood pressure. Lack of exercise increases the risk by 150%. 3. Eat healthy foods Avoid foods high in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol. Use less salt and avoid processed foods. Try to limit your salt intake to less than five grams per day (about one teaspoon). Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure; excessive fat can lead to clogged arteries; and low fruit and vegetable intake accounts for about 20% of heart disease and strokes worldwide.
want to increase physical activity and follow step no 3. 6. Avoid excess alcohol The best advice one could give is to stop drinking. But if you still want to, restrict your alcohol intake to one or two drinks a day, two to three times a week. A few drinks may help increase “good” HDL cholesterol, but heavy drinking can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. The bottomline is don’t be a drunkard. 7. Keep stress at bay Poorly controlled stress and anger can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Take up a hobby or any activity that can help you destress. If it helps, go to the top of a building and scream your lungs out, but de-stress. 8. Control cholesterol A simple blood test can show your blood cholesterol level. If it’s too high, dietary changes, exercise, weight loss, and/or drug therapy can bring it down to a safer level.
4. Quit smoking Smokers’ risk of developing coronary heart disease is 2-4 times than that of non-smokers. The risk is high also among nonsmokers who are exposed to passive smoke. If you kick the butt now, the risk will be halved within a year, and will return to a normal level within 15 years.
9. Monitor blood pressure Even if it’s less than 120/80 mm Hg, have it checked at least every two years. If it’s 120/80 or above, have it checked more often, according to your doctor’s recommendations.
5. Manage your weight Weight loss along with lowered salt intake, leads to lowered blood pressure. But we are not suggesting that you immediately opt for a strict weight-loss regime. Instead, you may
10. Control diabetes Diabetics are twice as likely as non-diabetics to suffer from heart diseases and stroke. Nearly, three-quarters of people with diabetes die of some form of heart or blood vessel disease. www.wishesh.com

WAYS TO REMOVE DARK CIRCLES AT HOME
D
ark circles are blemishes around your eyes and make you look older than your age. There are caused by several factors – inadequate sleep, nutritional deficiency, smoking and drinking, sun exposure, aging and genetics. When it comes to dark circles prevention is the best option. Eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, milk and cheese. Try to sleep for at least 7 hours at night and get 20 minutes of relaxation everyday, listening to music or doing meditation.
The skin in the eye region is delicate so avoid stretching it while cleansing or moisturising your face. Make it a habit to gentle massage the eye region with a nourishing overnight cream. But make sure to wipe out the area after 20 minutes of applying the cream. These are preventive measures, but if you already have dark circles then follow these beauty tips to lighten the skin around the eye area.
TEA BAGS Cooled tea bags are great help in reducing eye puffiness. Besides chilled tea bags aid in revitalising the delicate skin under the eyes.
CUCUMBER JUICE Cucumber has cooling properties and its juice is known to remove dark circles. Applying cucumber juice regularly helps to lighten the dark circles. Keep it on for 15 minutes before washing it off with water. If you want to treat eye puffiness along with dark circles, then use a mix of cucumber juice and potato juice in equal quantities. This will do the trick.
ALMOND OIL Almond oil is a great cure for dark circles. Make a paste of almonds with milk and apply over the dark circles before going to sleep. Wash it off the next morning with water. It helps to lighten the dark circles. www.wishesh.com

TEMPLE GANGOTRI
TEMPLE
In the folds of the snow-covered reaches of the lofty Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand are located the sacred Hindu shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. They together form the Char Dham or the Four Holy Shrines. The region is referred as the land of the gods in the ancient Puranas. Scores of pilgrims visit the shrines by trekking arduously along the mountain paths, all for a communion with the divine. Over the centuries, these sites have been described in sacred scriptures as the very places where devotees could earn the merits of all the pilgrimages put together. Subsequently, temples were built at these sanctified sties for all and sundry. Each of the four holy shrines of the Char Dham is located at a height of 3,000 m above sea level. The four temples in a geographical context form two distinct groups, that of Badrinath-Kedarnath and Gangotri-Yamunotri, with the common starting point at Rishikesh. Badrinath-Kedarnath lies towards the northeast of Rishikesh. Gangotri and Yamunotri are up north from Rishikesh. Of these sites, Badrinath and Gangotri are directly accessible by road while Kedarnath is reached by road followed by a short trek of 15 km from the Gaurikund road head. Yamunotri is a 13-km trek from Hanuman Chatti.
BADRINATH TEMPLE On the right bank of alaknanda lies the sacred spot perched at an altitude of 3,133 meters above the sea level. Encircled by a beautiful valley, the 15 mts. high temple is dedicated to lord vishnu. It is built in the form of a cone with a small cupola of a ilt bull and spire. Built by adi guru shankaracharya the philosopher-saint of the 8th centurty. The temple has been renovated several times due to damage by avalanches. Its colourful ‘singh dwara’ or the mainentrance gate give it a new, modern look. The temple is divided into three parts the ‘garbha griha’ or sanctum sanctorum, the’ darshan mandap’ where the rituals are conducted and the ‘sabha mandap’ Where devotees assemble. The complex has 15 idols. Specially attractive is the one metre high image of Badrinath, finely sculpted in black stone. It represents lord Vishnu seated in a meditative pose.

According to mythology, Goddess Ganga - the daughter of heaven, manifested herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of king Bhagirath’s predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries.

YOMUNOTRI TEMPLE The first stopover for the Char Dham Yatra is the westernmost shrine of Yamunotri in the Garhwal Himalayas. Dedicated to Goddess yamuna, it is perched atop a flank of the Bandar Poonchh peak (3.165 mts. Above sea level) and is situated opposite to Gangotri. The shrine attracts devotees in large numbers from May to October. Yamunotri is the source of the revered river yamuna which originates from the Champasar Glacier lying 1 km ahead of the shrine, at an altitude of 4,321 mts. Pilgrims do not frequently visit the source of the river as it is not easily accessible.

JITU RAI BAGS GOLD FOR INDIA ON DAY 1 OF ASIAN GAMES 2014 What a heady start for India at the Asian Games 2014? Ace Indian shooter Jitu Rai clinched a historic gold in the 50m Pistol event on the opening day of the 17th Asian Games at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range. Shweta Chaudary added to the winning joy by bagging a bronze in 10m air pistol. Fresh from winning a silver for 50m Pistol in the World Championships, this is the second gold for the shooter in last one year. Earlier, he had won a gold in Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier this year. The shooter, who is a part of the Gurkha regiment, was on target from the word go after moving into the finals even as compatriot Omkar
Singh failed to cross the qualification hurdle. In the finals though, Rai was tested by Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Phuong, who had to settle for silver and bronze medallist Wang Zhiwei of China.
IS SURESH RAINA DATING SOMEONE IN LUCKNOW? “After I was dropped from the Asia Cup squad earlier this year, I did a lot of introspection as far as my game was concerned. I had to go back to basics, and just perform very well. I spent months with single-minded focus on training, fitness, discipline. I trained at the Lucknow Sports College and in Mumbai, and I spent a lot of time with my friends and family to regain my confidence. That confidence helped me to play my natural game, and tackle the pressure. Pressure tha, but I knew I can turn things around. When I got on the flight from Mumbai to London, I was ready to give my best. And I am so happy I did. It was very important,” says Raina, who was in Lucknow for a couple of days, before leaving for Chennai on Saturday morning. Apparently Raina is known to frequent Lucknow often to meet his good friend from school days. But no one buys that, not even his family, who lives in Ghaziabad. www.wishesh.com
Post his superlative performance in India’s recently concluded ODI and T20 series against England, Suresh Raina is a relieved man.
“Even my mother asks me every time I come to Lucknow, koi ladki toh pasand nahi aa gayi wahan?” he shares with a laugh, “But I actually come here to just unwind with my friends. I have very few friends, and I share a special bond with them. I have a lot of matches coming up after the Champions League, there’s the West Indies tour in October. I know I will not be able to meet my friends for a long time now. So I made a short trip to Lucknow between two tournaments.” However, his mother would be only too happy if he did find a girl here! “She’s been after me for a while now to get married, especially since my closest friend has also tied the knot. Each time I go back home, my marriage is the topic of conversation,” reveals Raina, “But I have put off any wedding talk till after the World Cup. Abhi ussi pe focus karna hai.”

7 QUALITIES OF THE DHYANALINGA The basic thrust of the energies of the Dhyanalinga is to foster spiritual growth and evolution of a person. However, the Dhyanalinga radiates seven different qualities of life on the seven days of the week by which one may derive various benefits.
Monday: Earth being the tattva, this element stirs the spiritual energies in the most fundamental way and helps one rise beyond the limitations of food and sleep. It helps in cleansing the doshas in the body and mind and removes the fear of death. It firmly establishes one within the body and also the world outside. The day is most conducive to the aspiration of people seeking to make a spiritual beginning. It is the root of all growth and brings awareness of the divinity in man. Tuesday: Water being the tattva, it provides the fluidity to create one’s life the way one wants. It helps in procreation, imagination, intuition, and mental stability. It is a very good day for healing one’s inner ailments. Wednesday: Fire being the tattva, it creates a zest for life. It brings physical balance and a deep understanding of the body. It hastens the dissolution of karmic bondage.
Thursday: Air being the tattva, freedom becomes the way. It is an important day for seeking the divine. It is a meeting and a balance of the lower and higher energies. Love and devotion become the qualities of the person. It is a very good day to shed karmic bondage. Friday: Space being the tattva, limitlessness and freedom are the basic qualities, highly purifying for those who are suffering from any kind of negative energies and black magic. It develops memory, concentration, patience, self-confidence, and synchronicity with nature. It lowers the dependence on food and water. Saturday: Being the Maha tattva, it is beyond all duality. It leads to knowledge and enlightenment. Peace is the dominant quality. It is very important for those seeking self-realization. It helps one to go beyond the five elements and allows the individual to attain viveka (wisdom). It brings one in tune with the cosmic laws and become one with everything. Sunday: It marks the celebration of life beyond all senses. This is the best day to receive the Guru’s Grace and to break the illusion of the individual self.
SADHGURU:
The fundamental difference between Dhyanalinga and other lingas that you normally see is that there is no worship, ritual, or offerings for the Dhyanalinga. It is a “Dhyanalinga” – a meditative force. All that you are required to do is just sit there quietly to experience and imbibe the energies. Once a person is in the sphere of Dhyanalinga, he cannot escape the sowing of the spiritual seed of liberation within himself. Fundamentall, Dhyanalinga’s energies are primordial in nature. It is essentially a spiritual process, but because people invariably need material help and benefit, those aspects have also been made available in an expression of the exuberance of the seven chakras. Chakras are a meeting point for the energy systems, where the pranic nadis meet to create an energy vortex. There are many chakras in the body, but generally, when we say “chakras” we are referring to the seven important chakras, which represent seven dimensions of life. They are like seven major traffic junctions. This does not mean that a chakra by itself has its own quality, it is just that all roads which travel in a direction are doing certain things and they come together at a certain point, so it becomes a powerful place. In the Dhyanalinga, there is a certain cyclical system where different chakras are dominant on different days of the week. All the chakras are equally available on every day of the week, but on certain days, certain chakras are dominant. If people want to derive a particular benefit or influence upon their system, they can be there on that particular day to make use of that energy.

-PART 1
DREAMS AND KARMA
In the first of two parts, Sadhguru looks at the nature of dreams, and how they tie in with the unwinding of karma.
The unwinding of karma The process of life can be interpreted as an unwinding of that which has already been done. When we say, “Your life is the way it is because that’s your karma,” it simply means, your life is an unwinding of that which has already been done. But life situations may not collaborate very well with the karmic substance that you have. If you are trying to do a dream with eyes open and seek the cooperation of the world to do your dream, it is a hopeless way to live because the world will not cooperate with your dream. They have their own stuff. In a dream, you are able to create a conducive atmosphere for the kind of winding that you have. Only if life has gone beyond the unconscious unwinding of karma and it has become a conscious process, then, wakefulness is more meaningful. If life is limited only to unwinding of that which has already been done, a dream is definitely a better space to do it. In the yogic culture, Shiva, the Mahadeva, is described either as utter sleep or absolute wakefulness. This is the state of a fully conscious one: either he does not exist, or he is on. There is no in-between reality for him because if there is nothing to unwind, there will be only stillness and awakening. There will be no dream state. When I say “dream,” I’m not only talking about the scenery that happens when you are asleep, even when you have your eyes open, you are in a dream www.wishesh.com
state. Right now, how you are experiencing the creation is completely dreamy. It is not the way it is. The power of the dream and the flimsiness of the dream are simultaneously present. For one who is lost in the dream, it is a powerful thing. For one who is looking at it from a little distance it is such a flimsy thing. It just depends on how you have positioned yourself in relation to your dream. So can you accumulate karma in a dream? The accumulation of karma is not in the activity that you perform. It is in the volition or the intention of one’s action. Are you capable of an intention in a dream? Can you decide, “Today, I am going to have this kind of dream?” No. There is no volition in a dream. So a dream is only a process of unwinding. Even during the day, most of the time you are only unwinding that which has already been done. Your anger, your ambition, your frustration, your love, your passion, your hatred, most of this is only unwinding of karma, not your doing. You will realize this only when you try to stop it. Let’s say you got very angry with someone yesterday, and today, you are determined, “I don’t want to get angry with this person.” But when you meet him you will see, once again you get angry. Obviously it is not your doing. Most of the time, you are only doing the reverse of what has already been done. Only when you try to transform

of India. But all the eight goddesses are incarnations of Maa Shakti with different aims. The Ashtanayikas that are worshipped during Durga Puja are Brahmani, Maheswari, Kameswari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasinghi, Indrani and Chamunda. Numerous minor deities including many attendants and guards of Durga are worshipped on the day. A fast is observed by devotees on Durga Ashtami. Both men and women observe the fast. Shakti temples conduct special pujas on the day and are visited by millions of devotees. Durgashtami day ends with Sandhi puja, which overlaps into the next day which is the Mahanavami day.
D
urga Ashtami is also known as Mahashtami or Veera Ashtami. Weapons of Goddess Durga are worshipped on this day and so it is known as Astra Puja or Ayudha Pooja. The day is also known as Virashtami as there are displays using arms or martial arts. It is one of the most important days for Goddess worship in Hindu religion. Durgashtami day is celebrated as Pooja Vaipu day in Kerala. In 2013, Durga Ashtami date is on 12th October 2013. LEGENDS BEHIND DURGASHTAMI FESTIVAL On Ashwin Krishna Ashtami day, Goddess Bhadrakali, the powerful and fierce form of Mother Goddess was incarnated. She appeared along with Yogini ganas to
annihilate demon Mahishasura. In Sanskrit ‘Durga means the undefeatable’. Goddess Bhadrakali appeared with 64 Yogini Shaktis and some other fierce Goddesses to strike fear in Mahishasura. On Mahanavami, she became ‘Mahishasura Mardini’ by slaying the demon Mahishasura. Durgashtami is also known as Veerashtami because on this day Arjuna (The third of the five Pandava brothers) has taken out his Ayudha from Shami tree. DURGASHTAMI RITUALS AND FESTIVITIES The eight consorts of Goddess Durga also known as Eight Shaktis are interpreted differently in different regions
DURGA ASHTAMI CELEBRATIONS On Durgashtami day, Goddess Durga is offered clothes, other items which include bangles, jewellery, dhoti, kajal, bindi and other ornaments used by married women should be offered to goddess. the various movements of Goddess Mahishasura Mardini who relieved the people from suffering by slaying the evil demon Mahishasur during the period of Navaratri. The stick used during the Dandiya Raas dance is representative of the weapon Khadga (sword) in
the hand of the Goddess. People make different kinds of offerings and honor the goddess through ceremonies, prayers and songs. Special puja rituals are prescribed for each day. Usually a community pooja is performed where

a priest performs the pooja for the entire community. Generally people attend their own community pandals for daily rituals, ceremonies, music, dances and food. In different states, different rituals are attached with puja and people follow the trend.
Celebrations of Durga Puja came to an end with the immersion of the majestic images of Goddess and her pantheon in the river Ganga and other water bodies across the country. A sense of sadness pervades the atmosphere after bidding farewell to the goddess. But it is also the time when a yearlong wait begins for the Mother Goddess to return next year around the same time. “Asche bochor abar hobe!

VIRGO
SAGITTARIUS
You will be focused on money this month, until the 23rd, you will be very reasonable and counting your money just in order to know if you can afford a long trip or a new car or decorate your flat completely new. You may be lucky getting a bonus from your boss or a money donation from your parents. Love is stronger by the 24th as Venus enters in Scorpio, it makes you more expressive with your feelings and it helps you be closer to your loved one. Pay attention to your back, it is stiff and too tense, you need to stretch and move around, don’t sit all the time.
SCORPIO You come at the end of a cycle: progressively your life has taken a turning point and you got rid of a lot of old stuff to replace it with new people, different situations, and other mindset. You have changed a lot, and you will continue evolving. Love is frustrating until the 24, but after that it will be heaven and plans for the future in November. I you are single you enjoy being free to do what you want and spend evenings with your friends without any compromise on any sort. Women Scorpio have to pay attention to their belly.
LIBRA
Venus is in Libra from the 1rst to the 24th, time to make yourself beautiful, change your style, buy new shoes or clothes and try new beauty products. If you are single, you are in a mood to be charming and to be charmed. The good conditions to meet someone. Between the 11th and the 26th, Mercury in Libra will play his games with communication, appointments change, you lose your cell phone, and flight cancelled, transportation strikes and all these annoyances that are disturbing. Don’t take any important appointments during that period. You catch up with everything at the end of the month.
AQUARIUS We’re encouraged from a young age to let our imaginations run wild. As we grow older, we understand we’re supposed to become responsible, realistic and practical. The latter attitude does much to sap imaginations that have a part to play in the most mundane and seemingly serious situations. Of course, we need to balance this with the need to be practical sometimes but what harm can result from releasing ourselves into colorful worlds of our own creation from time to time? This month, it’s your imagination and ability to be creative that brings you closer to a cherished dream, not seriousness, sensibility or adhering to strict protocols. www.wishesh.com
Mars is in your sign until the 27th so you will have a very active month, as it is pushing you to do more than your usual routine. You don’t want to miss any opportunity, any meeting or party. It can be exhausting but you push your body as far as he can go. And as a sign of fire, you can do a lot. The beginning of the month, you should take it easy, sticking to a nice gentle routine. If you are looking for a new job, you will be lucky and get nice recommendations from a woman who believes in you professionally. You keep putting yourself to constant interrogation, you want to progress and Pluto is pushing you to do so. Love is complicated until the 24th, not your partner’s fault, it is yours as you are pretty moody.
PISCES Family relationships will be complicated and some conflicts may arise: you disagree with your father, or you tell some unpleasant truth to your brother. Keep your mouth shut especially when you feel the urge to be blunt, you will save yourself a lot of trouble. Uranus is pushing you to be impulsive with your expenses, you have a hard time resisting some purchase that are beyond your means. You will need to rebalance your budget later. Single may meet love at work, this would make it complex but not impossible. In a couple, you work both hard and your schedules are difficult to match.
