PROJECT NARRATIVE
Project Narrative My thesis is utilizing the concept of fluidity as an architectural methodology. Our modern world is exhibiting changing conditions and dynamic innovations. Contemporary architecture is a response to our modern life-style. The fluidity of architecture is the interaction of multiple elements from the scale of buildings to the scale of the urban construct. I’m interested in creating flexible spaces and flexible programs that are adaptable and spontaneous. The fluidity of my architecture also enhances the circulation and creates the interrelationship of the building to the city. There are many examples of efficient structural systems. At the scale of the buildings, the infrastructure is one of the great examples of how to connect the people from one city to another. At the scale of the body, the veins convey and exchange of blood for functions. For instances, in medical treatment, the injection is the utmost efficient treatment for diseases. Therefore, the fluidity of the structural system is my thesis concept. I would like to explore these concepts through my architectural programs, interior spaces, public spaces and the form. The project explores the integration of urban pattern, urban texture and the urban direction. My project is a San Francisco International Cruise Terminal and the Waterfront development. The site is located at pier 27-31. The design strategy is based on programs analysis, programs diagram, which extracts and simulates the programs in the city to the site. The parametric procedure is algorithmic mathematic and is used to design the landscape pattern and the architectural form. The landscape pattern will form the building and the building will wrap around the interpenetrated circulation. In between the interpenetration, the spaces create the interaction. The algorithmic mathematic refers to the predictably changes. The number will change and transform consistently. The changing pattern illustrates and breaks down the solid structural system bonds between the urban territory and the city boundary. A traveling is a seamless boundary, it’s the cultural transmission and a cultural exchange between people. This condition affects the cultural exchange at the urban level and creates integral knowledge. The pleasure of traveling is the smoothness of traveling and there’s no boundary between the destination and the traveling route. “Functions are activity patterns, patterns of communicative interaction.” There would be no rigid forms, no simple repetition, no fixed stereotypes, no social homogenization and no segregated zoning. The parametric functions create the variable event scenarios. According to the different programs, the variation will create the interaction between passengers and the local people. Security system within the travel terminal creates a rigid separation between travelers and the general public. My design proposal attempts to create a fluid interaction, spatially and visually through my continuous surface flow. Everything communicates with everything. The parametric pattern is the important strategy to define the evolution of contemporary architecture.

Legend Existing Open Space and Public Access [a]
Urban design addresses the physical character and built environment of a city. Good urban design reinforces the visual and sensory relationship of an urban area and the physical relationships that give character to a city. It concerns both preservation and development, and the fitting together of pieces with appropriate scale and visual interest, without unsettling contrasts. Urban design incorporates our cultural heritage and values things that explain our past. In the end, good urban design should help make a city efficient, safe, healthy, enjoyable, and valued by its residents. The Design & Access Element is an effort to recognize the positive attributes of the San Francisco Waterfront, conserve and enhance these attributes, and improve the physical character of the waterfront where it is less than adequate. It defines the qualities that make the San Francisco waterfront a glorious edge to a great City, and provides direction for the physical form of development and open spaces envisioned in the Waterfront Plan.

HARRY BRIDGES PLAZA
The unique character of the San Francisco waterfront derives from a rich mix of urban activities, variety of views and open spaces, cohesive historic context, and extraordinary natural setting. The Design & Access Element seeks to ensure that this unique waterfront character is preserved and enhanced as waterfront revitalization occurs. Towards this end, the Design & Access Element takes a comprehensive approach to identifying how public access and open space and views will be maintained, enhanced and expanded, in ways which are sensitive to existing urban patterns and historic waterfront resources. This Element also includes design criteria specific to geographic segments (“subareas”) and individual sites along the waterfront. As new development occurs along the waterfront, the following three goals will guide the enhancement of the waterfront as a public asset. CITY CONNECTION AREA
