These designs feature details that tell culturally rich tales about the artisans and origins behind them. We invite you to explore this fascinating collection with us. Our merchants are constantly looking for rare objects, antiques, and other curios that express a worldly view of the designs and heritages of our global village and world. As I have traveled with them overseas or on a sourcing trip on my own, I never miss the opportunity to shop the local pavement stalls and the small Sunday markets or drop into an antique store or two. I am constantly amazed by the pickings to be had at these venues, at what I would consider very attainable and affordable prices. Of course, these markets are all about the “one-off or unique” items — with blemishes, dents, and wear and tear from years of usage, without which, I submit, their value would substantially diminish. When you buy these rare birds, you must fully expect them to come into your life with their history — sometimes an article well enjoyed and appreciated may also be an item with some small chips and dents representing war scars of another era. RARE BIRD RUGS These one-of-a-kind, handwoven rugs are a true collector’s prize. Nomadic tribespeople in Persia began weaving rugs over 2,000 years ago to shield themselves from the cold, wet environment. Over time, the practice that started as a means of survival was passed down and transformed into the traditional form of art and self-expression that we still see today. Handwoven rugs bring a sense of beauty, artistry, history, and culture to any home — knowing that each knot was hand-tied by masterful artisans makes them that much more unique. close-- up close MOTHER OF PEARL AND BONE INLAY THE HISTORY: The history of bone and jewel inlay is long and has evolved over the centuries – in fact, there is evidence of this dating back to ancient Egypt. In more recent times, the tradition took roots in Rajasthan, India, where local artisans initially developed this art form for the royal palaces of the Maharajahs and nobility.
THE PROCESS: The construction usually has multiple steps in the process, In this case, it is a three-step process. First, ethically and responsibly sourced cattle bones (Bone Inlay) or ocean shells (Mother of Pearl) are hand-carved to unique shapes. Then these are glued to the furniture base or f rame to create a beautiful mosaic pattern. As a f inal step, the resin is f illed in the space around the inlay and f inished. This handcrafted technique results in a product where each item is unique and different.
PRODUCT CARE: These items are truly unique, and you would want to take care of them to enjoy for years to come. Please clean with a damp cloth and avoid direct sunlight.

matter RATTAN
Wicker has been practiced as a weaving technique among craftsmen for centuries, dating back as far as ancient Egypt. This careful craft has since been adapted across eras and cultures alike, eventually gaining new purpose beyond its original implementation in basket weaving into the creation of furniture. Rattan emerged as a material that made it possible to combine the intricacy of wicker work with furniture design, and the rest is history. Rattan was brought to the West through trade with Asia, and was soon appreciated for the exotic, artisanal qualities it brought to Victorian style décor. Over time, the adaptability of this material allowed for further iterations of rattan furniture, resulting in some of the more modern designs seen today. Because rattan is made from the tough inner core of the rattan vine, it is incredibly long-lasting. Thankfully, it is also flexible enough to be worked into a multitude of shapes. This combination speaks to the versatility and utility of rattan furniture. Now, this style of furniture is welcomed in homes as a representation of beauty and craftsmanship. FROM OUR BLOG Upon my travels to Af rica, I was fascinated by what I saw in the stores, at the hawker markets and the roadside stalls, and often picked up nickknacks, carvings, baskets, and other artifacts on my many trips. Kenya, Zambia, and South Af rica were all very fascinating to me – and every trip had new discoveries for me to make! My traveling merchant business partner, Angela, and I were delighted by all the riches Af rica has to offer – simple handcrafted items with a sense of beauty and detail that leaves you enamored and speechless! Little baskets woven by human hands, each almost unique in detail and texture, or grass table-mats, fans, ornaments, small décor items, carvings, other unique items that show off their skills, gifts, and mastery of their craftsmanship.
