BANNER ADVERTISING SIZES There is a set of generally accepted banner ad sizes and 90% of all Internet banners will belong to one of the categories listed below. Some of the most popular banner ad sizes include the wide skyscraper, the classical 468 x 60 full banner and the 120 x 90 or 60 pixel buttons, that are easy to fit in most web pages. Skyscrapers 120 x 600 - Skyscraper – Most skyscraper type banners are located in the left hand menu. 160 x 600 - Wide Skyscraper – a very popular banner ad size , mostly because it allows for longer, easier to read text messages. 300 x 600 - Half Page Ad - This big banner ad allows advertisers to display larger images, but many web masters find this particular banner ad size hard to fit into their web pages. Banners and Buttons 88 x 31 - Micro Bar – Extremely easy to fit into web layouts, the micro bar is a very popular banner ad size, although it can only display small graphics and short text. 120 x 90 - Button 1 – the 120 x 90 button is a good choice for 800 pixel width websites. 120 x 60 - Button 2 – also a popular baner ad size. 468 x 60 - Full Banner - The original banner ad size.
3
234 x 60 - Half Banner – Useful in web pages where the full banner does not fit. 120 x 240 - Vertical Banner – Less utilized than its skyscraper brothers, the vertical banner is still a sight you will often find while browsing the Internet. 125 x 125 - Square Button – often used to display images rather than text. 728 x 90 - Leaderboard – another classical banner size . Rectangles and Pop-Ups 336 x 280 - Large Rectangle – the most popular text link size 300 x 250 - Medium Rectangle – Very popular for both banners and contextual ads 250 x 250 - Square Pop-Up – allows for excellent short text presentations, while also being generous in space as far as graphics are concerned. 180 x 150 - Rectangle - less utilized than its 160 width brothers. 240 x 400 - Vertical Rectangle – many animated banners are created in this particular banner ad size
BANNER ADVERTISING Banner advertising is everywhere on the Internet, if you go to just about any Web site you will see what I mean. Hosting pay-per-click (PPC) banner ads is a good way to make additional income from your site. PPC is a term given to an affiliate program that will pay you every time a visitor from your site clicks on a banner. This takes the visitor to the advertiser's Web site where a product or a service is offered. Targeted PPC Advertising For a higher click through rate (CTR), it is recommended that you keep the PPC banners that you display related to your Web site content. For example, if you have a music related site, then you would want to keep music related banner ads on your site. Since you are already attracting visitors who are interested in music, they will be more
4
inclined to click on music related banner ads. This will give you a higher CTR, thus generating more revenue. Non-Targeted PPC Advertising If your Web site is not particularly related to any single category, then non-targeted banner ads are better for you. This type of advertising is usually lower paying, since the advertiser is not willing to paying a lot of money to get their banner ads placed on various Web sites. Nontargeted advertising also usually generates a lower CTR, thus earning you a minimal amount of revenue. But then again, minimal revenue from your site is much better than no revenue. Cost Per Action While you earn money instantly when a user clicks on a CPC ad, CPA (cost per action) ads require more of a committment from the user. You are paid each time a user completes a particular action—for example, completing a survey, signing up for a subscription, or buying a product. CPA ads are typically used with affiliate programs. There are two basic types of CPA ad campaign: •
Cost per lead: You are paid each time a user signs up or provides contact information. This usually doesn't require a payment from the user. These programs typically pay somewhere between 50 cents and $3.00 per signup.
•
Cost per sale: You are paid each time a user buys one or more products. The commission is usually a percentage of the sale price, so the amount you earn for a sale depends on how much the user spends.
Like CPC ads, the effectiveness of a CPA campaign depends on your audience. Some webmasters make more money from affiliate programs than any other source, because they have found affiliate programs that closely match their audience. If a program does not fit your audience, you may find yourself running thousands of ads without a commission.
5
Payout Rates Generally, you can be paid in the range of 10 - 35 cents per click through depending on what type of PPC advertising you are running. The average rate for quality sites running non-targeted ads would be around 15 cents per click while sites running targeted PPC ads usually pay around 20 cents per click through. Your monthly total revenue would vary depending on the traffic that your site receives. For example, if your site gets 1,275,039 page views and you have a CTR of 0.56% with a payout rate of 17 cents per click, then that would give you $1,205.47 in revenue for that month. Again, this is just an example so please don't go to work tomorrow and tell your boss off just yet. Placement Of The Banner Ads The most common misconception in PPC advertising is someone thinking that the more banners they stick all over their Web site the better. This couldn't be more incorrect. Bunching banner ads up on your site could actually harm your chances of earning revenue because it can drive your visitors away. What you have to do is think of your site as a television program. No one likes a program that is filled with commercials. They will just change the channel. A good television station will spread out their commercials over a decent period of time keeping the viewers happy. So you should do the same thing with your Website. Perhaps one banner ad on the top of a page and one at the bottom of that page would be sufficient. Or maybe you can just place one single banner in an area that is viewed the most by your visitors. It doesn't make sense to burry an ad on a part of your site that no one ever sees. Steps To Getting It Going 1. Create your Web site. (Well Duh!) 2. Pick your advertising company. (I hear that Adbrite is the best on the Internet) 3. Place the banner ads on your site. (According to the information above) 4. Promote your site. (Search Engines, FFA Sites, Etc‌) 5. Tell your boss to take a hike and quit your day job. (Just Kidding!!!!)
6
CHOOSE YOUR ADS WISELY Which ads you choose to run depends on your audience, and you'll need to spend some time experimenting to determine what works best for you. In general, you should run as many CPM ads as possible—assuming they are not priced too low to bother—and experiment with CPC and CPA ads to fill the remaining ad inventory. Most ad networks attempt to optimize the ads they show for your site, but you may find that some CPC and CPA ads are just giving away free advertising. Be sure to check your effective CPM regularly and run the ads that work best. Don't forget to look at the ads themselves. These days flashing, seizure-inducing ads are common, and they don't even pay more than the nice respectable ads. I recommend avoiding these ads unless they have a really good price, and there are some flashing ads I won't run at all. If your users are unable to enjoy your content because of an ad, they won't come back, and you'll make less money.

ADBRITE Tips On Making Money With AdBrite So you have joined AdBrite? You may be one of those lucky webmasters or bloggers that will immediately start benefiting from the advertising ads shown on your blog or website. Chances are that you may also be one of many who, after joining AdBrite and placing the necessary codes on your website, will earn pennies per day as weeks and months pass them by. Every forum or website you go to, to find an advise on how to monetize on your website via advertisements, you will read that in order to begin earning any good money with advertisements on your website, you will need traffic and lots of it. There are few things that you can do to improve your chances on earning better income from AdBrite, even if your website does not have much traffic. Basic understanding on how AdBrite works will help you to set a stage for success with advertising. Placing Your Website in Correct Category and Choosing the Right Keywords. Whenever you create a new AdBrite add zone for your website, you are asked to choose a category to which your website belongs. While this may seam as a simple step, placing your website in a wrong category will affect the kind of adds that will be shown on your website. If your website, for example is about cosmetics and you have
8
chosen for your website a category for websites about pets, the future visitors may wonder why the advertisements for animal products are shown on your website. You may also consider to use wisely the description field for your website. Many web masters use the description that is exact copy of the description they have used when submitting their websites to other directories and search engines. While this kind of description is OK, you will be better off to you use that option to sell your space. You can, for example mention that all AdBrite advertisements are located above the “fold on your website. Many advertisers know that adds located above the fold have much better click-through. After choosing the category, you will be asked to provide two sets of keywords. One- to describe the content and nature of your website. The other- to let advertisers know what they can sell via advertisements on your website. Make sure that each group of keywords are related. This will only compliment the content of your website and most likely improve the click-through of your ads. The above steps of course are not important should you choose to manually approve each and every add. But if you let AdBrite to approve the adds, they will most likely reflect the keywords you have provided in one of the steps while setting an add zone. Pricing Your Add Zone. One of the great features available to AdBrite publishers is that they can choose to set their own prices that will be used in direct purchases. Setting the right price is very important. While you may have an ambition of showing an advertising at $100 per day, this will only work for high trafficked websites. On the other hand setting lower then your competitors may result in poor earnings. With time you will be able to adjust prices after you learn what works and what does not. Having the freedom to set your own prices, you may also use it as an incentive feature. Let say you have set the price at $1 per day. You can offer a discount to those advertisers who will choose to place a weekly rate at $5 or a monthly rate at $20. Developing Relationships With AdBrite Advertisers. Since you will be able to manually approve all direct purchases, use this opportunity to build a business relationship with your advertisers. Do not be afraid to ask for their feedback even if they do not
9
repurchase the adds on your website in the future. This feedback will provide you with tips on how to improve your efforts. Upon approval of specific adds for your website send an e-mail to your advertisers reminding them to install tracking code on their website. If they have done so, send them another e-mail to see whether or not their campaign is performing well.

Can You Make Money With AdBrite? Few days ago I published an article about my first check from adbrite of $36.00 I have to let you know upfront that that I have become a big fan of AdBrite(aff) and therefore this article may seem partial and bias. But if you bare with me, I may eventually get my point across. To begin with, I also was skeptical about making any good money with AdBrite(aff) and for many reason have taken a wrong approach right from the very start. I thought to myself that all I had to do is to place little snippets of code all over my website and then sit and relax and watch my money “rolling in”. If you have the same attitude don’t even think of marketing the space of your website for advertising ads from AdBrite, or for that matter with any contextual or pay per click advertising. You will end up disappointed with making just a few dollars if that.
10
So here is how my “love affair” with AdBrite started. After researching few possibilities I zeroed down to two choices Tex-Link-Ads and AdBrite. The reasoning behind was that with these two you have more control on what ads will eventually appear on your site. Unless you end up showing only so called “network ads”, you will be asked to approve any purchase of ads on your site and therefore you can decline ads that do not correspond to the content of your website or you find otherwise unfit for your website. This kind of control is not yet present even at Google AdSense. While Google does and excellent job crawling and analyzing the content of your, site here and there some ads would “slip” that you would not always want them on your website. By approving each advertising from AdBrite, you also have an excellent opportunity for building a business relationships. Every good businessman will tell you that your best clients are the “return clients”. Unfortunately I was not approved for a publisher with Text Link Ads(aff), but I still am an affiliate with them and hopefully one day can become a publisher. So that left me with AdBrite. After registering new account I quickly placed the necessary codes on my website and started to await my big money rolling in. Also, in order to “beat” the competition I set the lowest possible price- I was asking one penny per day for a single ad. I figured that if I sold all space available I would make about $10 in my first moth. But two weeks went by and I have earned only $0.08, no exaggeration. It was clear to me that my plan was not working- until something changed my attitude. That something was a Yellow Book, yes I still keep around one of those. As I was looking for something in it, I thought to myself “all space is sold in this book”. Fortunately for me, I have a friend who use to sell space in Yellow Book, but unlike me in order to make his money he did not sit around and wait for people to start calling in. He went around from business to business, old and new, selling the ads. Plus he had a huge advantage over me, unlike my website Yellow Book was known to people. I knew that with some work and marketing, I have a chance to make my website known. But I literally did nothing to sell the ads. So I decided to change my attitude and actively pursue my potential advertisers. Now I am trying to e-mail at least ten advertisers a day offering to advertise on my site. And it is starting to pay off, but most importantly I am building good business relationships which I hope will lest for years to come. So where do I find potential advertisers? Anywhere and everywhere. Some of them can be actively using AdWords by targeting specific sites some may already advertise with AdBrite. There is also a benefit
11
from referring new advertisers to AdBrite. You will get $35 per referral. I write them and e-mail explaining what is my website is all about, telling them how many and what kind of visitors my site receives and offer to start a long lasting business relationship. So out of the my first check of $36.10, $35 I received from AdBrite for referring a new advertiser. And whole $1.10 from selling the ad itself. Since then I have adjusted prices for my ads and no longer sell them for a penny per day. I believe my work is worth more than that, and so should you! By now you may have already read that in order to make any real money with advertising on your site you need at least 1000 visitors a day. While the more traffic you have (and if you can show it) the better off you are. But I sold my first ad via AdBrite at the time when my site was getting about 20 unique visitors a day. While big number of visitors is a plus, do not get discouraged because you don’t have 1000 visitors a day. If you are marketing properly your website, you may end up with more that 1000 visitors a day to your site. Just multiply what I made with only 20 visitors a day to my site by 50. Yes it is possible to make $1,800 a month just with AdBrite. I am not there yet and it will still take some time before I am making this kind of money. But I surely will be back writing and bragging the very first day I receive a check of $1,800. I give you my word on this one! So can you make real money with AdBrite? The answer is YES, you can. But in order to do so, you can not sit around and wait for the money to begin to roll in. You need to do something about it. Remember the Yellow Book? Your website is it! And your are it’s CEO, as well as the sales person!.
Make Money With Google AdSense Anyone who owns or is thinking about creating a website would be crazy to ignore this. I am happy to say that making money with your site, no matter the topic, has become easier than it's ever been before - and it's 100% legitimate. from that traffic and probably turned a small profit.
12
From Adwords to AdSense Google.com earns most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages. All this is managed through a program they call AdWords. Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from AdWords by placing these same text ads on your site. In other words, you're helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn. This program is called AdSense. Every website owner should be involved in this. It's just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Even if your site is just for information purposes, you can still participate and make decent money with AdSense -- or at least enough to fund your website. So if you are one of those people that don't like the idea of paying for a site, this is an excellent way to earn your money back and then some. Even if you earned as little as $10 in a month, it would more than likely cover some or all of the costs for your web site. Perhaps you are simply looking for ways to add additional revenue to your website, then it's perfect for that situation too. This program is getting so popular, people are creating websites just to display the ads and profit from Google's AdSense alone. I don't usually like to use the term "easy money" because there really is no such thing. You still have to create your own website and learn how to bring in traffic in order to make good money with this program. I certainly don't want to make it sound like you get something for doing absolutely nothing. There's no such thing. However, I've got to say that AdSense is probably the closest you'll ever come to fast money on the Internet -- especially if you already have a website that gets a good amount of traffic.
13
What's even better...the program is completely free. You can also use it on multiple websites and there is no limit to the amount you can earn.
How AdSense Works If you go to Google.com and do a search for almost any keyword phrase, you'll notice some "Sponsored Links" that appear on the right side of the screen that are relevant to the keywords you just searched for. Website owners pay Google to display these ads and are charged a predetermined amount every time their ad gets clicked by a web surfer. With the AdSense program, you will display these same text ads on your site just like Google and get paid for it as well. All you do is copy and paste some provided HTML code into your pages and Voila! the ads will show up. Every time an ad is clicked on your site, you will receive a certain percentage of what Google receives from the advertiser. Once your account reaches $100, you'll receive a check in the mail.
"Is Google Crazy?" I know what you're probably thinking... "What's the catch here? Why would Google just give away money advertisers are paying them?" The answer... Because Google is very smart. Now that I understand how AdSense works, I can see that it's a winwin situation for everyone involved, and the bottom line benefits Google. Let me explain... Since the advertiser's ads are now being displayed on more web sites all over the internet (instead of just Google's site), they are getting much more exposure. More exposure means more clicks and even more traffic for their site over a shorter period of time.
14
This is good news for Google because the more traffic the advertisers receive, the faster their advertising funds are used up. Remember, they get charged every time their site gets a visit; and of course, it is Google's hope that they'll continue to keep funneling more money into their account for more ad exposure. What an ingenious way for Google to increase the amount of money they earn from advertisers while building loyalty with website owners (like us) who are now getting paid to help them advertise. Of course, I'd expect nothing less from the most popular search engine on the web. My Personal AdSense Story I have been receiving monthly checks from Google since 2003, and I've read numerous success stories of websites earning 5 digit incomes per month with AdSense. Now, I will admit, a 5-digit commission in a single month is probably not the norm for most participants. I promote AdSense on three of my websites and my checks have been as high as $4,000, but usually average around $2,000. I would estimate that my earnings are above average and that is mainly because I keep adding more content to my sites on an The more information you have, the greater chance you have of attracting free search engine traffic. That's why it's so very important you choose a topic you have an interest in so you can keep building and building. My checks weren't always that large. I think my first month's earnings in 2003 totaled less than $20. However, I kept getting more and more search engine traffic by adding more content and the checks slowly began to increase. I had no idea it would grow to anything like this.
15
COPYCATS BEWARE! I read an article about a lazy person that copied someone else's content word for word and pasted on their own site. They tried to join AdSense and they were rejected for unauthentic content. I don't know how Google found out their site was a duplicate of someone else's but they did. Not to mention, the search engines are now ignoring pages with duplicate content. So all the thieves out there that are too lazy to come up with their own content are now finding that they cannot get their site ranked in Google, Yahoo and MSN simply because they've copied someone else's work. It's not worth the risk. Not to mention, it's illegal to republish someone else's work without permission. That's why you should choose a topic you know a lot about or at least have a great interest in. There's no reason to copy off someone else's site. Be original. Laziness always comes to bite you in the long-run.
"How Much Can I Earn With AdSense?" Google does not disclose exactly how much you'll earn per ad that is clicked. The commission you receive per click depends on how much advertisers are paying Google for the particular ad. You will earn a share of that amount. I've heard of earnings anywhere from 2 cents to $15 per click. So it is logical to believe that keyword phrases like debt free, employment, make money, mp3, sex, etc. will earn you more per click since these are highly competitive keywords that are searched for quite a bit on the web. Advertisers generally pay more for popular terms because they are searched for more. Even though Google will not reveal how much you are earning for each ad that is clicked from your site, you can still login to your account at any time and see the total amount of revenue you've generated that day, week, month, year, etc.
16
For example, if you see that you've made $12.60 today from 9 clicks then you can calculate that your average click-thru commission was $1.40 per click. That's as detailed as their stats will get. Also remember, that's only an average. You won't know how much each specific ad brought in. The amount you'll earn also depends largely on the amount of targeted traffic you receive to your own site, how well the ads match your audience's interests, the placement of the ads on your pages, and of course the amount you receive per click. Ideally, you should create a site on a topic you know a lot about. That way you'll have a much easier time creating a generous amount of content on that subject.
How Google Matches the Ads to Your Site's Content One of the main reasons this program is so successful is because the ads that are displayed closely match the content of your website. This increases the chances that someone will click on the ads. Here's how Google accomplishes the content match... "...We go beyond simple keyword matching to understand the context and content of web pages. Based on an algorithm that includes such factors as keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web, we know what a page is about, and can precisely match Google ads to each page." So let's say you have an information website about yoga. Once you join AdSense and paste their ad code into your site, Google's technology will determine the topic of the pages by scanning for keyword repeats, page title, etc. If successful, you will see ads that relate to yoga displayed on your web pages. Of course, the more related the ads are to your site's content, the better the click-thru. Keep in mind, the ads may not be an exact match because it depends on the ads inside Google's database. So instead of seeing yoga ads,
17
you may see more generic ads like exercise, healthy eating, etc. This is not a bad thing because these are topics your visitors will likely be interested in as well.
Why I Believe AdSense Works So Well For years, website owners have tried to make money from their sites by putting up banner ads in hopes of visitors clicking them. The problem with banner ads is that the Internet audience is so immune to them, people do not click on them anymore. When's the last time you clicked a banner ad? ...Exactly! Second, in order for the web site owner to earn money from that banner ad, usually the web surfer that clicks has to purchase something. With AdSense, your visitors just have to click the ads. They don't have to purchase a single thing. Third, most people that use banner ads do not do a good job of matching the ads to the website's content so the click thru percentages are dismal. With Google's AdSense, not only are you displaying text ads, (which tend to receive a much higher click-thru rate than banner ads), but you are displaying contextual ads that match your website's content....thanks to Google's advanced technology. Lots of times people think the ads are part of your site's content so they click because the information is relevant to your site. Whereas with banner ads, they often have little relevance and people tend to ignore them no matter how much they flash and fly across the page.
Creating Your Website for AdSense Before you even begin your site, make sure you've come up with a topic that you feel you know plenty about. That way it will be easiest to write a lot of content.
18
The more content you have, the better chance you have getting accepted into the program. Also, the more content, the greater the earning potential. AdSense is nothing but a numbers game. If you want to make a lot of money, prepare to write a lot of content. Now let's talk about building your website. There are two ways you can approach this: 1) Do it Yourself (DIY) from scratch 2) Use Site Build It! (SBI!) The Do It Yourself Method I've actually used both methods for building my site and there are advantages and disadvantages to both. If you use the DIY method, you will have to go and register a domain name (yoursite.com) and then sign up for a web host and build your pages. You can either learn HTML or buy some kind of web editor like Microsoft FrontPage to build your pages. That's the method I used to build this site. Averaging between $7 and $15 per month, the DIY method is usually the most cost friendly of the two but you are mostly on your own in terms of learning how to create your web pages and adding the AdSense code to your site. Web hosts are generally there to house your site. They don't specialize in helping you market and optimize your site for the search engines to help you get traffic. So don't expect a lot from them in terms of helping you market your site. This is not necessarily a bad thing. I had to learn how to build this site on my own and it wasn't very difficult. I brought Microsoft Frontpage and in about a day or two my site was up and running. So if you don't mind learning, it's definitely doable. In fact, most people use the DIY method to build their websites. The 2nd method below is fairly new in comparison.

How to Join AdSense After you have created your website, click here to join. Most sites are either accepted or rejected within 24 to 48 hours, so you shouldn't have to wait too long to find out if your application has been approved. Once you've been accepted, simply copy and paste the provided HTML code into any page that you'd like to show the ads. If you've done a good job of defining the content on your web pages, the ads that show should be relevant to the content of your page...increasing the chances of click-thrus by your visitors. You can either display the ads vertically along side the page like Google does or in a banner-like formation horizontally across your pages. The placement is up to you. You can even customize the colors to match your site's theme.
If Your Site Is Rejected by Google... If you receive that email from Google stating that your site has not been accepted, the first thing you should remember is that as an AdSense member, you become a partner and are representing Google, Inc. They have to make sure the websites that display these ads are up to par or they could run the risk of losing advertisers. Imagine if you were paying Google to display your ad and you found it showing up on a poorly developed, junky website. Of course, if your site is rejected, it doesn't mean it is poorly developed. There may be other reasons: 1) Is your site an "About Me" page? Google does not usually accept these kinds of personal sites because most of them do not have a specific topic or theme. They are usually just random facts about the website owner or their hobbies, pictures, etc. It would be difficult for Google's technology to display targeted ads on these kinds of pages because the topics vary from subject to subject. They are looking for "themed" sites that contain a generous amount of information on a specific topic. It could be anything from sewing tips 20
to sports. Just make sure there is an obvious theme with adequate information. 2) Is your site organized? Be sure your site has a neat and clean navigation that's easy to follow. Also ensure all the links work and that there are no typos. Keep the colors to a minimum and make sure each page has a consistent layout.
3) How many pages are on your site? Even though Google doesn't specify a page number requirement, many believe they are looking for web sites with a certain amount of content. Again, it's not likely a two-page site will get accepted. Try to strive for at least 15 pages. 4) Is your content solid? Don't just submit a website with a bunch of links to other sites. Be sure you have a themed/niche site with enough original content of your own. 5) Is your site an exact carbon copy of someone else's? Some believe Google can find out if your site is original or not. Don't risk it and steal from someone else. It will come back to haunt you. If you're stuck, write a few articles of your own and then go to sites like www.articlecity.com and sprinkle a few of their articles around your site to beef it up. 6) Be sure to read their program policy and procedures carefully and make sure your site hasn't violated any of the terms. Tips on Succeeding With AdSense Here are some tips for achieving success with AdSense. 1. Create a website with your (YourSite.com). Don't try to use a free web host because your site will likely have banners and pop-ups and
21
get rejected because it looks unprofessional. Not to mention, a free web host will give you a website address like this: http://thefreewebhost.com/yoursite/member1234/home.html instead of... http://www.yoursite.com See how much more clean, concise and professional that last link is? If paying for a website causes you to frown, remember the money you earn from AdSense could more than pay for the web hosting fees you'll incur. Look at it as an investment instead of a cost. I never dreamed I'd have this much success with this program. My AdSense earnings clearly outweigh the few dollars I pay every month to maintain my sites. 2. If you don't know web programming or have no desire to learn it, get a beginner's design editor like CoffeeCup. You can publish your content directly to the web from the software. Keep in mind you can't use FrontPage alone. You must have a web host that will allow you to publish your site to the Internet via FrontPage. (More on web hosting in a sec.) 3. If the main goal of your site is to make money with AdSense, be sure to choose a topic that you know a lot about so you can write lots and lots of content. Don't like to write? No problem! There are sites like www.articlecity.com that provide free reprint rights. Just search their database and find articles that match the theme of your site. Don't rely completely on sites like this, however. You'll definitely want to have some of your own unique content. A few articles from these sites is fine, but relying on them for 90% of your information is not going to help your site. 4. Get traffic. Once your site is up and running you'll need to learn how to get your site listed in the major search engines.
22
Getting into Google is completely free and can bring in hundreds or even thousands of visitors per day. All you have to do is submit your site to them and wait patiently while Google ads it to the index. It can take a few months. Patience is key with Google. Then do the same with Yahoo, MSN, etc. 5. Partner up with other related sites and participate in link swaps. This means that you place a link to another person's site on your own site and they do the same for you in return. This is a great way to get even more free traffic. 6. Get a copy of AdSense Gold. There are tons of books on how to maximize your earnings with Adsense, but this one is different because it's written by someone who actually earns 5-figure Adsense checks every month. The author gives you some invaluable free tips on his site, but if you want the most profitable strategies, you have to buy the book.
TEXTLINKADS.COM There are many, many ways of advertising. Banner ads, links, rss, email - advertising has long since been used as a way to get your image and brand out their quicker and easier. One of the oldest and easiest forms of online advertising is link ads, and one of the largest link ad networks is Text-link-ads.com.
What Is Textlinkads (TLA) Textlinkads is an advertising network that allows advertisers to place text links on sites and site owners to add their site to a directory of site for potential advertisers to put their link on. I’m sure you’ve seen people selling link ads on their site. Links are the most traditional method of online advertising because they are straightforward and to the point. Many people also believe text based
23
links offer better SEO than graphical advertisements because they are more direct.
Why Use It A common question that many would ask themselves is “do I really need this service?”. From time to time, I have found myself asking myself that exact question. I have been with TLA for about 8 months now, but have continued to contemplate whether I should drop off or not. Still, I continue to stick with them. From an publishers point of view, TLA helps more potential advertisers find your site, which is a good thing. In return, they take 50% of the link price for each link space they fill on your site. Arguably, it’s easy to say “I can sell links on my own for more without a service like this!”. While it is true, TLA helps connect you to a much broader audience of potential advertisers. Other methods like forums tend not to be as successful because if your link prices are fairly high, average forum members will not be able to or have the willingness to pay excessive prices for ads. Usually the average advertising crowd is looking for a much cheaper solution, so TLA can reach a more “targeted” crowd of advertisers willing to pay more for what they get.
How Your links are Valued TLA values link prices based on numerous factors including site traffic, theme, ad position, and link popularity. For example, at Devlounge there link ads found in the sidebar of every page are currently $45/month at the time of writing. Prices can and will fluctuate, so as a site grows so will the cost of advertising. TLA also has two tools for calculating the estimated amount of money you could be making a month. The TLA Link Calculator http://www.text-link-ads.com/link_calculator.php asks for your site url, category, and how many links you’d like to have on your site (up to 10 or more). You are then asked to pick the general location you would find the ads and whether or not they would be site-wide or on a single page. If they were to have 10 or more ads here on Devlounge, they could be making an estimated $230 a month. The closer you place ads to primary content, the more the estimated value rises TLA also has a blog juice calculator - http://www.text-linkads.com/blog_juice/ which will compare your site to similar sites in the 24
same general category. This can come in hand if you plan on valuing your own ads in comparison to other sites and figuring out where you’re focus areas are in order to move your sites ranking along.
Set it and forget it TLA is the perfect solution for anyone who wants to advertise on their site but does not want to worry about dealing directly with advertisers. By letting TLA do the work, you will lose a cut of your potential income if you sold the ads yourself, but you will allow advertisers to find you and you won’t have to do any negotiating; instead just sit back and wait for your monthly payment.
Feed hungry links A few months ago Textlinkads also introduced RSS Advertising. As a publisher member you can download a plugin for different blogging platforms and offer rss advertising to potential advertisers. With the increasing popularity of feeds, RSS is becoming another popular form of advertising, and TLA can also help handle that. If you’re interested in finding out more on Textlinkads, be sure to check them out. You’ll need to sign up to browse the marketplace listings of add your site to the marketplace.
Here are 10 sweet reasons: 1. An easily navigable site - means that you can find what you want where you want it. TLA utilizes the common function of categories, whilst ReviewMe has gone web 2.0ish by using tags instead. Either way, browsing for an advert opportunity has never been easier! 2. Cheap links on newly submitted sites - looking for a cheap, quality advert on someone elses blog? Search for New Text Link Ads, check for high Alexa ranking blogs and high Link Popularity at a low price ($15 is a steal). New sites tend to be 25
underpriced due to unseen potential by the TLA robots - so take advantage of it!
3. Great prices for your established sites - if you own a site which has been around for 6 months or more, chances are that you’ll be looking to sell an ad at $35, meaning that you can come away having scooped up $17.50 per month, per ad. Times that by 10 potential ad spaces and you’re laughing! 4. All legwork is taken care of - thanks to TLA and ReviewMe’s automatic nature, all you have to do is take a few minutes to sign up and submit site details and sit back and let the Sales departments find you advertisers, add the links to your site through the piece of code and pay you directly into your Paypal account! 5. Recurring income for publishers - once you’ve got a site thats always got a few advertisers wanting an ad place, you’ve got yourself a nice little income stream that will deposit itself to your Paypal account at the start of every month so you don’t have to rely upon Adsense clicks, and so that you can fund the next stage of your website growth. 6. Great advertiser SEO benefits - Recently, Travis did a case study - http://www.text-link-ads.com/blog_juice/ To see how well text link ads work for publishers. And the results show that if you buy a link on a high PR site with a good Alexa and Technorati rank, then you can gain the Search Engine benefits and help to boost the rep and stats for your site too. ReviewMe reviews also encourage deeper linking as authors really try to find the gems in your Archives. 7. They’ve got Patrick Gavin - what more can I say? I found a really good story telling of his good doings and my experience is that the man is the backbone of the 2 companies. He follows up to every email you send him, responds in a friendly way, and goes out of his way to make sure that you as the advertiser or publisher are happy. Good work Gav! 8. Both companies are easily contactable - email addresses come as standard, but TLA takes this to the next level with their “tollfree” phone number.
26
9. Both have a blog - this is a wise move by the company as it allows advertisers and publishers to keep up to date with whats going on behind the scenes. www.Linkbuildingblog.com and ReviewMe’s version also help to generate a community aspect to the 2 sites, creating traffic. It’s also nice to know that the sister companies practice what they preach. 10. Finally, they have bucket loads of exposure - seriously, how many articles have you seen promoting the hell out of TLA and singing its praises (not including this one!)? TLA and ReviewMe thanks to their innovative and well-paying services are in most people’s good books and as a result have endless amounts of exposure - their affiliate programs help this so much too. So there we have it, 10 dang good reasons why these companies are gonna keep growing and growing and growing. I’m sure in a few years time the sites will be worth a nice deal of money to say Google, Yahoo or eBay? Keep going Patrick and the gang, you’ve won me over. And to those new advertisers or publishers wanting to learn more? Signup at Text Link Ads and get earning/promoting/loving!
TRIBALFUSION Tribal Fusion is a very large, respected ad network in its fifth year of profitable growth. They are a popular CPM solution for high volume sites due to the high quality publishers they attract. Tribal Fusion is a newer player in the online advertising business and they are very similar to Burst!Media in that they also cater to small niche publishers. The difference is that Tribal Fusion has better technology, and a better system for purchasing and managing advertisements. Thus you can buy a campaign for as little as $25, which makes Tribal Fusion attractive to smaller advertisers - and those who want to "test the waters" before contributing large amounts of funds.
27
Tribal Fusion hasn't been around as long as Burst!Media, so they have less experience or contacts in the business world. They also have less pull with large advertisers, but them seem to be quickly making up ground. Tribal Fusion has higher traffic requirements than Burst!Media, they require 1000 uniques per day, which could mean on average around 150,000 impressions per month. They support 468x60 banners, 728x90 banners, popups, popunders, and skyscrapers on select sites. Tribal Fusion's pops are limited to one view per person every 12 hours. Tribal Fusion takes a 45% commission on ad sales. I have never heard anyone complain about Tribal Fusion. Good word of mouth has made them increasingly popular with webmasters. I would definitely recommend giving them a try if you have enough traffic although they shouldn't be used as your only provider. Right now I would personally recommend them for your primary provider, especially if you have room for 728x90 banners. Click here to visit Tribal Fusion.
Features All of Tribal Fusion's advertisements are on a CPM basis and they have no CPC or CPA advertisements in their network. You can choose from a variety of ad formats to display on your site. They allow various rich media and expandable advertisements to get the attention of the visitor. Tribal Fusion's ads are all written in English and only support sites written in English.
Controls After you sign up and are given the capability to login, you simply visit Tribal Fusion and login with your information. After logging in, you have the ability to do a variety of things. The most important is the ability to choose your advertisement category and choose whether you want it filtered from sexual and offensive content to suite your site's content. Once logged in, you may also view your ad performance statistics. Their statistic-reporting facility enables you to view your CPM earnings from the date and the specific time you choose so you
28
can see how different ads have been performing. The rate you receive for the ads in the Network is given to you. In the Menu, you also have access to your profile information and have the ability to change certain information you have submitted in the application. Overall, the Menu is easy to use and navigate and if you need help your dedicated customer helper can answer any questions.
Available Ad Types and Formats Currently, Tribal Fusion has a large variety of ad types mainly focusing on rich media ads with flash and dynamic content to grab user's attention. These ads feature moving objects and possibly even banners that make noises so they may grab user's attention better. The rich media ads that Tribal Fusion supports are banners in the following sizes: 728x90 leaderboard, 468x60 banner, 336x280 square, 300x250 square, 120x600 skyscraper, 160x600 leaderboard, and popunders which carry a higher CPM rate.
Reporting Once logged in, publishers may view their statistics by pressing the reporting button in the publisher menu. Using this menu is very straightforward in letting you enter specific dates and times. It’s a simple thing to view how individual advertisements have performed with an impression and click count displayed by the date you have chosen..
How to Get Started Click on the Smart Publishers section and go to Apply. There, fill out the form and proceed. They will send you an email letting you know whether you have been approved or declined as a publisher within a few days. There is a list of minimum requirements for publisher sites to meet in order to be accepted. For example, users are not allowed to use any type of robot or fake traffic mechanism to boost revenue or they will be removed from the network. A minimum of 2000 unique visitors is required each day to the site where the ads are placed. Sites with users must have an active user base and must have a professional site design with updated and good content relating to the category of ad they display. If all these requirements are met, you will likely be approved and can go ahead and earn high CPM rates with this network.
29
New users have to follow a rather lengthy procedure of setting up their account information into the system, and while it can take a little while to do, it's also very easy with their help system guiding you along step-by-step. New publishers must put Tribal Fusion's ads on their site and wait for activation before being fully activated into the network.
Payment Tribal Fusion Pays Net-45 meaning every 45 days when the minimum $50 payment has been reached. Tribal Fusion only pays Publishers 55% of the revenue they generate for your site, meaning you get only 55% of the revenue share, which is lower than the industry standard. Offsetting this is that Tribal Fusion has some of the highest CPM rates for a CPM Ad Network, meaning that even if you only receive 55% of their revenue, you might still get a very decent rate depending on your category. Currently, Tribal Fusion only supports paying its publishers via cheque.
More Information and Support Tribal Fusion's support is usually very fast but can sometimtes take between 3-4 days which is still pretty good. In addition, their support staff is friendly, helpful, and informative.
Summary If you have a High Traffic Website, Tribal Fusion is definitely a good way to monetize your site. With high CPM rates and good customer support, Tribal Fusion is an ad network to consider using if you want to display CPM advertisements. With targeted ads that give you full control over your own ad filtering, you will receive better results and fill your ad inventory quickly. Even without a referral program, this network is definitely one of the best solutions for Large Volume Websites seeking to display CPM advertisements.
BURST! MEDIA BURST! Media is one of the premier advertising networks in the
30
industry for speciality content web publishers. It delivers more than 23 billion impressions every month and has over 2,000 web publishers in its network of websites. Founded in 1995, BURST! has survived the downturn in the internet advertisement industry primarily because of the niche speciality targeted market that it caters to. The advertisers can choose from more than 20 content and audience channels and 477 sub-channels, for contextual targeting of their advertisments. BurstMedia uses its proprietory AdDesktop technology to deliver the ad creatives to the publishing websites.
Program Details BURST! accepts only speciality content websites with at least 5,000 page views per month. The other rules for applying can be found at their website. Once accepted, it may take a few months for the publishing website to receive targeted advertisement. In the meantime, run-of-network advertisements are shown. The site is listed in the network's gallery of websites. Advertisers can choose the category or individual websites for their advertisement needs. BURST! also provides a survey code for publishers to add to their websites. The survey helps in determining the demographics of the web site's visitors and hence in signing up more advertisers. The contract terms are 60% payout for 3 year exclusive, 55% for 1 year exclusive and 50% for non-exclusive month-to-month contracts. A non-exclusive contract is recommended because the default & nonsold advertisements can be transferred to another advertising network like FastClick.
Ad Formats & Rates BURST! Media provides the following ad formats: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Standard 468x60 banners Super 728x90 banners (in combination with 468x60) SkyScraper (120x600) and Wide SkyScraper (160x600) Cube (125x125) Intrusive (Pop-under, Layer) IntelliText (selective release)
31
Burst Media has plans to add new formats like EyeBlaster, Shoskeles Layers, Unicast Layers, Pointroll Layers in the recent future. The rates for the banner advertisements have suffered after the dot com downfall, and still very low. BurstMedia's rates are relatively superior and comparable to FastClick. However, their 50% commission takes away the major portion of that. IntelliText, a product of Vibrant Media, is a new offering for BURST! publishers starting March, 2004 and is targeted for high traffic websites in technology, gaming, business & finance, automotive, and travel categories with high textual content (such as reviews and articles). IntelliText creates a relevant commercial link for matching keywords in the webpage's text, and displays a textual ad when a user scrolls over it.
Other Burst Media uses one of the oldest technologies, which needs an overhaul. The current version of the code has two parts - one common code to be added to the top of a web page, and individual code for each type of ad format. The common code has to be added only once. Because of the dependent nature of the ad codes, it poses problem if delivered by an ad serving script, where the number of BURST! ads on a page may vary. The future versions of the scripts (Version 2.0S) might help in overcoming some of the problems. The release date has not been set. The member's administration panels are also old, with less than adequate statistics. The statistics only show the previous days results, but not on a daily basis. Statistics generated by Analog is shown for weekly reporting. FastClick provides an excellent administration area in this regard. However, the use of Akamai Technology by BURST! Media provides a nice geographical statistics and click through rates for the websites.
Summary BURST! Media is considered one of the premier targeted outsourced advertisement network for speciality content websites with moderate traffic. The rates are not the best in the industry considering their 50% share. However, their ad serving technology combined with their experience in the industry will surely benefit
32
any publisher in their network. For more information: Click here to visit BURST! Media.
FASTCLICK Founded in 1999, FastClick has quickly grown as a well known advertising network serving small to medium sized publishers. They provide CPM and CPC based campaigns with a widest range of ad formats. Their ad rates are comparable to the other networks and their ad fill rates are among the best. FastClick is not an advertising agency and so do not provide targeted ads for publishers. However, they do geo-targeting for campaigns. Fastclick is not an ad agency, they in general do not provide targeted advertising but they provide a wide variety general audience CPM and CPC banner campaigns. They do categorize sites based on topic and you sometimes will see a somewhat targetted ad, but nothing like what Burst!Media or TribalFusion can provide. Fastclick is also well known for its popunder campaigns, which offer some of the best rates for that ad type that you'll find. Their adcode by default limits popunders to one per person every 12 hours so the annoyance factor for your visitors is lessened. What really sets Fastclick apart is its ad serving technology. They have a very flexible, very modular, ad serving system and they offer a plethora of member features. Many webmasters use Fastclick as their primary provider because with all the management features it is very easy to manage the ads you send to other, secondary networks. Fastclick also has a low requirement of only 3,000 impressions per month. The only real downside to Fastclick is they can't bring in really good ad rates. However for general audience advertisements they're one of the best. Their rates have been increasing lately and if you can't get high 33
paying targetted ads elsewhere Fastclick is a good choice for a first tier provider of general audience advertisements. I highly recommend Fastclick to everyone. Their banners and skyscrapers are not very good, but their popunders are just about the best. You can join them and run only their popunders and you'll do fine. The key is to select almost every popunder they offer and them limit them to one per person per day or one per person every 12 hours. As for banners and skyscrapers -- just use them as your last tier provider unless you cannot get into higher paying ad networks.
Ad Formats FastClick provides the following ad formats or types: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Standard 468x60 banners Super 728x90 banners (in combination with 468x60) SkyScraper (120x600) and Wide SkyScraper (160x600) Medium Rectangle (300x250) Pop-under Invue Interstitial
The standard and super banners are not that good and often have extreme animation. However, they provide the easiest way to filter any ad that a publisher would not like to show on their website. Filtering can be done by an auto-select criteria, such as, filter all ads that have extreme animation, casino content, alcohol or tobacco related. This feature makes FastClick stand out from other networks. Also the publisher can view each campaign banner and disable individual campaigns. The in-vue and interstitial formats are the newest addition to the ad delivery types. Invue is an inline ad which scrolls into the center of the browser window and is less intrusive than a popup. Intertitials are full page ads launched between pages. The user is returned back to the next page after viewing the ad. Publishers can also specify their own default banners.
34
FastClick introduced two new formats (wide skyscraper and medium rectangle) in February, 2004. The specifications for these formats are below: • • • • •
GIF, animated GIF, JPEG, HTML, Rich Media. 25K file size limit if served by Fastclick. Unlimited media looping. CPC: 24-hr cookie frequency cap or 24-hr IP address frequency cap (adjustable). CPM: 1-hr cookie frequency cap or 1-hr IP address frequency cap (adjustable)
Rates FastClick pays 65% of the revenue collected from the advertisers. The average ad rates (after their 35% cut) measured in eCPM (effective CPM) for various display types are as follows (this may vary for your website): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Standard 468x60 banners: $0.50/CPM Super 728x90 banners: 0.75/CPM Pop-under: $3.60/CPM SkyScraper: $0.36/CPM Invue: $1.80/CPM Interstitial: $3.00/CPM[
The rates for banners are not that good, however, their pop-unders perform very well. The payments are sent by check, or PayPal once the amount reaches $50. They also provide a referral program, which pays 5% of the net earnings generated from each referral indefinitely.
Other FastClick uses one of the latest technologies to deliver ads, so ads load fast. The campaigns are optimized for the best performance and hence provide better revenue for website publishers. Their system would run the highest paying ads first before all are exhausted. There are frequency caps on campaigns and so pop-unders and in-vue ads are run on a 12 hours basis. Unlike other ad networks, FastClick is honest in terms of not displaying any ad that is not counted. For example, it will not show more than one pop-under in a 12 hour period instead of showing multiple but counting only once.
35
Problems Reported FastClick invue codes have some problem on Opera browsers, where a square blank window appears on the top left corner. FastClick has been notified of this error. Also the invue code often does not close with a click on the cross mark on the top right corner on some websites. This might be due to conflicting JavaScript codes on these websites. A publisher should test all ad codes before using on the website.
Summary FastClick is one of the best choices for website publishers to generate a revenue stream. Publishers can use FastClick as their primary provider of ads. For more information: visit FastClick
