You Can Support the Car Industry, Love Cars and Be an Environmentalist
All too often, if you are a driver who loves to drive and a car enthusiast looking at the environmentalist, green agenda, it can feel like you versus them. It might seem to you as though green activists are all just granola eating hippies with their heads in the clouds, dreaming of some future utopian society where everyone walks and cycles and knits their own yogurt and looking down on you and your ilk in your gas guzzling machines. But unless you are one of the petrol-head dinosaurs, soon to become extinct in the face of global warming, you can support the car industry, love cars and be an environmentalist.
Just because you love driving and love cars, that does not mean that you are an ostrich with your head in the sand. In fact, those with a strong interest in cars and the automotive industry are more likely to understand the issues we all face and what can and cannot be done about them. You will understand that the cars currently on the road are not a sustainable option for the future but you will also see the constant change and progression in the automotive industry.
Just because you understand the problems, that does not mean that you have to agree that the solution is a retrograde step into a pre-industrial, pre-motorcar age! In fact, you will find if you cross that imaginary fence into the environmentalist camp that very few of those who advocate strongly for green living and ethical transition into a post-oil dependent future actually want a no-car society. Very few people actually want to take a step backwards from the ease and convenience of personal motorized vehicles. No. Most people, be they car enthusiasts or environmentalists or both want to see the agendas of the two groups to be brought closer together. At the end of the day, everyone wants to move forward into a more sustainable future.
Car loving environmentalists will actually be a necessary part of transitioning into that future. Personal transport is unlikely to be something that anyone can or would want to do away with entirely so solutions must be found. Car enthusiasts will be the ones who help drive that change, agitating for vehicles that not only represent earth-safe technology, zero emissions and ethical maunfacture but are also vehicles that actually work, practically, in the real world and are cars that consumers will actually want to drive!
If everyone were to move away from cars entirely, overnight, this would not solve any problems. Car enthusiasts, as well as those with a purely green agenda, must continue to put pressure on the industry and drive it forward in the right direction. We must continue to agitate for change, both as car drivers and environmentalists. It is only through doing this and keeping the industry healthy that we can ensure that money, time and expertise is going into finding solutions and finding the cars of the future- before it is too late.
