Bridging the Gap
T
by Marcia Richards
his year's "Bridging The Player Gap" program has evolved from the many conversations about how the sport has bottomed out in the number of players, how facilities keep converting courts into exercise rooms, and how tournaments are getting smaller as experienced players advance without novices and juniors coming in to fill the lower divisions. After discussing these same issues with our neighbor Darold Key - who has developed a plan, a vision and a roadmap on how to build a successful program in Arizona - the CRA, aided by Jo Shattuck, has developed its own "Bridging The Gap" approach for the coming season. What is "Bridging The Gap"? What gap are we trying to close? Who are we connecting? Well to start, there's the age gap, the knowledge gap, the program gap, and the level of competition gap. If you visit other facilities, you'll quickly notice that one court club has 1) no programmer on staff and no programs; 2) lots of youngsters without the proper equipment or eyewear; 3) outdated racquets used as rentals; and 4) people playing the same person every week. Another court club enjoys a hired programmer with leagues, shuttles, high participation, and good equipment. What can the CRA do to help bridge this type of gap and create consistent venues for all levels of play? The CRA bridging program targets all levels of play from junior and beginner instructional programs (like those taught in PE programs at the high school and college level) to training and competitive skill-building. It invites a player to enter the program at the lowest and most recreational level and - if they choose - progress from a club enthusiast, to a traveling league player, to a CRA member and serious tournament competitor. It is a player's choice to move along the continuum, if and when they feel they are ready. Or not. As adults we can recall the progression from our very first racquetball experience to the point we are at today. We have all been actively involved with this lifetime pasttime, and it is the board's mission to try and provide a place for all interested individuals to take up the sport we enjoy so much.
USRA/CRA • 1685 West Uintah Colorado Springs, CO 80904-2921
So who will get the bridging started at your facility or school? Last year, our theme focused on "Together We Can Make A Difference" and in order for us to keep this sport moving forward, we must all be willing to give something back. Club owners aren't compelled or motivated to hire a program director. Today it's up to each of us to pitch in, or help identify people to fill in the GAPS so we can BRIDGE the gaps. If you are interested and would like to learn more about the program, visit www.ColoradoRacquetball.com. Contact me by email at Marcia@ColoradoRacquetball.com if you are interested, but can't take on the responsibility of being in charge. We can help you find someone. We can provide you with the basic tools to get started at the ground level. We have a staff willing to help teach the teacher. And we're committed to making this season be the one that fully bridges the gaps and brings it all together, for racquetball.
CSU — Pueblo Men’s Team Tops in Nation
C
by Richard Krinsky
SU-Pueblo demonstrated their racquetball prowess at the Intercollegiate National Tournament in Tempe, Arizona this past April. In four days of play, the CSUPueblo men's team lost exactly one match. Ben Croft beat Mitch Williams in straight games at the #1 singles. That win will place Ben on the US National Team through next year. Gil de los Rios, a freshman from Chihuahua, Mexico won at the #2 singles, and Chris Barton won the title at #3 singles. Charlie Pratt lost in the finals at the #4 singles in a tough tiebreaker. Joey Lee and Matt Melster repeated as national champions at the #5 and #6. The entire team will be returning next fall along with the additions of Mitch Williams, who will be a graduate student in the MBA program, and Darrel Miller, a brilliant freshman student from Wisconsin who recently finished third in the US National Junior Tournament in Portland. The addition of these two players will make an extremely competitive team even more competitive.
CSU-Pueblo also entered a women's team in the intercollegiates. Five of the women, Margo Rainey, Eve Magistrelli, Annette Green, Kelli Kimmel, and Veronica Foote will all be returning next fall. Developing a competitive women's team is a high priority for the program in Pueblo. Any Colorado racquetball players who are interested in attending college in Pueblo should contact me: Dr. Richard Krinsky at 719-549-2588 or at Richard.Krinsky@colostate-pueblo.edu.
Junior Team Colorado Update
W
by Dan Davis
e are very proud of our junior team again this year. There were eight juniors from Colorado who played and represented our state very well at Junior Nationals in Portland, Oregon. We placed FIFTH in the nation with only 8 players.
RESULTS: Erika Manilla - 1st Gold Division, Girl's 6 Multi Bounce; 3rd Gold Division, Girl's 8 Multi Bounce Elizabeth Vargas - 1st Gold Division, Girl's 8, 2nd Gold Division, Girl's 10, 3rd Gold Division, Mixed 10 Doubles Adam Manilla - 1st Gold Division, Boy's 10 Doubles (With Sam Reid of Oregon) Anthony Herrera - 1st Gold Division, Boy's 18 Doubles (With Jared Torres of Kansas) Anthony Vargas - 4th Place Gold Division, Boy's 8 Multi Bounce, 2nd Place Red Division, Boy's 8 Matt McAdam - 4th Place Gold Division, Boy's 8, 3rd Place Gold Division, Mixed 10 Doubles Zach Pellowski - 1st Red Division, Boys 10 Kevin Hernandez played extremely well, and represented the CRA in the best possible manner, but just missed out on a medal.
Erika Manilla, Elizabeth Vargas, Adam Manilla, and Anthony Herrera are National Champions. Anthony Herrera is on the national team and will represent the US in Junior Worlds this December in Juarez, Mexico. Our best estimate is that we will have 7 or more kids represent Colorado in the Friendship Cup portion of Junior Worlds in Juarez. Coaches are Carol Pellowski, Adam Katz and Dan Davis. We are also VERY proud of the Junior USA National Racquetball team members, who attended an elite training camp this summer in Colorado Springs at the US Olympic Training Center. Colorado's Jeremy Lanosga was progressing well in his recovery from a fall a year ago, and he got to visit with the team while they were in his home town. Contact the CRA if you would like to contribute to Jeremy's recovery process and need some ideas. Jean Gallagher is heading up the "Jeremy's Journey" efforts.

❏ What do TV's Montel Williams and racquetball have in common? Generally speaking, nothing. But in this case, he had one of Colorado's own on his show. Colorado's own as in Linda Winters, of Lindita's Salsa fame. Linda was featured on the July 14th show. Hers is the prototypical rags to riches story. She overcame a tough background to organize and develop a salsa business that's done very well. In the process, she and her husband, Mike, also a racquetball player, have raised a great family. Truth be told, Mike has a few off-the-court accomplishments himself (more on that at another time). Although Linda doesn't play much these days, she has stayed true to her roots as a supporter and sponsor of many local racquetball tournaments. Success couldn't happen to a nicer person. Here's hoping it just gets bigger and better. ❏ Since we're in the guessing mode: What do football, racquetball, and Wisconsin have in common? Beer? Cheese? No, guess again. That's right, if you said Dawn Baranek's favorite football player, Brett Favre, you'd be absolutely correct. Mr. Green Bay Packer recently sold his 7,800square-foot house, which included a racquetball court. Actually, I like to think of it as a racquetball court surrounded by a house. Seriously, who just wants a house? You want a house and a racquetball court. It could have been yours for a mere $895,000, down from the $1.3 million asking price. This should make your athletic club membership look like a bargain.
PLAYER PROFILE —
Eric M. Thompson
T
by Cindy Tilbury
his July, I spoke with Eric Thompson of Greeley's Conditioning Spa racquetball club. Eric is not only a top player, but he also owns the club.
Rollout: Eric, tell us a little about your racquetball career. Eric T: I have been playing racquetball for about 20 years - which I almost hate to say, because I really should be better than I am. I am an Open Level racquetball player and a B level Squash player. I have competed at the Pro level on two different occasions. I have traveled to Nationals in Houston, and Squash Nationals in Seattle, WA. Rollout: What equipment do you use? Eric T: I have been sponsored by Ektelon since 1987. I am a dedicated and loyal Ektelon supporter and sell exclusively Prince and Ektelon equipment at my club pro shop.
Rollout: Who taught you the game or helped you get to the Open level of play? Eric T: My early mentors were the Steve Strandemo racquetball academies (I attended two) and the U.S. Olympic Training Center where I spent one week after qualifying at the Regionals in Lakewood, Colorado - I forget the year, but it was the early 1990s. I also had the good fortune of being coached for several years by Tom Richardson, who, at that time, was the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Colorado State University - Tom taught me how to take the principles from the training that I had had and put them into action - he also taught me a tremendous amount about the mental aspects of the game Tom was the most influential mentor that I had in the game of racquetball. Rollout: And now your life is racquetball and fitness. That's amazing to players like me who still consider it a hobby after 20 years, and to newer players. Eric T: Well, I have been at the Conditioning Spa Health and Fitness Center since 1991. I began teaching racquetball in college and started picking up squash. I now own the club, and my duties range from organizing tournaments, teaching lessons to signing up new members. I oversee a staff of nearly 50 people operating over 45,000 square feet. The Spa was established in 1971 and offers everything from aerobics and free weights to squash and racquetball. Rollout: Is there anything else you'd like to share with the Rollout readers? Eric T: From a fitness standpoint, I have always enjoyed racquetball and squash. I love the competition and the health benefits. I would love to see more juniors coming onto the scene than I do. Racquetball is a wonderful sport, and the earlier you start, the easier it is to play. However, it is a sport that can be learned at any age! It truly is a sport for all ages. Editor's Note: If you're in Greeley, stop by the Conditioning Spa, and sign up for Eric's next tournament. Typically, the tournament is held in October, but check the schedule for the exact dates for the 2005/2006 tournament season.
TIPSTIPST TIPSTIPS
When the racquetball court has logos/decals on the walls, use them to your advantage. For example, if there is a logo in on the front wall in the top middle area, serve lob serves hitting that logo. It could momentarily throw off the receiver's vision-just long enough to cause a skip or setup for you.
Above: Junior Team Colorado at Nationals in Portland, Oregon.
Since you should always have your racquet up and ready to take a shot, keep it a little higher so you can protect your face and shoulder when you're peeking back while your opponent is setting up for his/her shot. Also, if you are accidentally in the way and feel you are going to get hit by the ball, use your racquet to take the hit and save a bruise.
Right: Jeremy Lanosga (center front) with the US Junior Team at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
2
When you're playing a lower-level player, instead of hitting rollout shots that will quickly end each rally, choose a part of your game to work on against your opponent. Suggestions include your lob serve to the receiver's forehand, in-rally ceiling shots, overhead pinches and wide-angle passes.
On-court etiquette: Was it really a hinder or should you give up the point after a questionable
rally that doesn't end your way? Think quickly to yourself: If my opponent had skipped the next shot, would I have taken the ball and served? In other words, did I take the best shot I could?
Leather and mesh gloves can be washed and reused after they appear too stiff to be useful. Regular soap or saddle soap can work. Make sure you close the Velcro patches first! See someone at a tournament and don't know how to start a conversation with him/her? Referee his/her match so you can offer congratulations for the win or commiserate on a loss later. If you're new at refereeing matches, feel free to ask the tournament desk people for help. They can find someone to sit with you for half a game to help you learn what to do and help with calls if you need it. After that, for rules questions, always ask the Tournament Director-don't assume the players know all the rules. Depending on how often you play racquetball, you will probably want to replace your shoes twice a year. They get slick on the bottoms and broken down from stressing the tops and support areas. If your feet felt great after playing and are now hurting, it is probably time to replace them. In a friendly game, it's a good idea to get used to the concept of Penalty Hinders (formerly called Avoidable Hinders) by calling them on yourself. Sometimes it's easier for a referee to see them happen, but if you're sure, offer the point/sideout to your opponent. If you see or cause one in a tournament, you'll be all over it. Penalty Hinder Example: You dive to get a shot and get it. The ball comes back very near you and you haven't been able to get up from your dive yet. A penalty hinder would be called on you.

❏ Thumbs down: Stacking your team and not playing in the correct division. It's an integrity issue. What's integrity? Doing the right thing when no one is looking. Doing the right thing when someone else wants you to do the wrong thing. ❏ Thumbs down: No viable ranking system to help tournament directors make somewhat intelligent decisions on seeding and classification.

Missing-Wall Racquetball
I
by Cindy Tilbury
n Colorado, as in all northern states, there aren't too many summer racquetball highlights. Of course, Pepsi Cup is always a great team event, but after that, most players wait for the next fall/winter/spring season. Not this year!
On Saturday, August 6, 35 adventurous players got together outside Aurora Rangeview High School's outdoor courts to play in a three-wall racquetball tournament. With some help from his friends, Dave Guentert put together a spectacular event to have fun, get some sun, and raise some money for the Juniors. The benefit was arranged on very short notice (after receiving word that the courts were available for tournament use on that date) and emails/flyers were sent to all players with known email addresses. Many hotdogs were consumed; about $450 was raised for the Juniors and presented to Dan Davis. All food was donated by Dave Guentert's company, DMG Painting, then coordinated and cooked by April Settel, who always does a fantastic job at CRA tournaments. DMG Painting also powerwashed the courts and repainted the lines. The MVP award has to go to Marcia Richards for bringing spray-on sunscreen, water coolers, balls, drawsheets and other tournament paraphernalia. Most important was the huge canopy tent from Colorado Academy (a big thanks to them), where she teaches Physical Education.
And without Tamera Schlegel negotiating our court usage with the Rangeview High School athletic director at a very reasonable rate, there would not have been a tournament. Watch the www.coloradoracquetball.com website for another outdoor tournament in the next few months-doubles only this time. Due to the success of this tournament, many more players are expected. Don't miss out! Here are the results of the Colorado One-Day Outdoor Racquetball Shootout*: Event First Place Second Place Men's Open Singles Woody Clouse Dave Guentert Women's Open Singles Chris Johnson Cindy Tilbury Men's A Singles Rob Brown Todd Good Men's B/C/Junior Singles Kevin Hernandez Jason Zemlicka Men's Open Doubles Woody Clouse / John Rhodes Dave Guentert / Chris Johnson Women's Open Doubles Cindy Tilbury / Tamera Schlegel Barb Mehegan / Ann Schramm Mixed Other Doubles Rob Brown / Todd Good Dan Davis / Gary Hutton
*What is a Shootout? Tournament organizers in Colorado don't do these much, but other parts of the country offer them regularly. A shootout is a one-day (or half-day) tournament where everyone shows up at the same time, pays the entry fee and signs up for a division. Everyone in the division plays everyone else, and the match format is determined based on the number of people signed up (two games to 11 or one game to 31 or a regular match, for instance). Many times, the division winner gets half of the entry fee as a prize, but other times, trophies, equipment and gift certificates are given instead.

❏ Thumbs up: To the Colorado Junior Racquetball team for their great showing at Nationals. Dan Davis and Adam Katz deserve a big round of applause for the work they've done. ❏ Thumbs up: To the Littleton Family YMCA for winning the recreational title with such a small team.

Downtown YMCA Racquetball Clinic, February 23rd, 2005
K
im Pedrie has been putting on a once-a-month racquetball clinic for juniors at the Downtown YMCA in Colorado Springs. In February, he had 21 young adults attend this clinic, from the ages of 6 up to 16, both boys and girls. It was a great time and included six instructors from the area. In addition to Kim, we had Barb Sims, Sue Lin, Mike Young, Mark Telander and Klane Pedrie.
Racquets, eyeguards, and balls were provided and, of course, sport drinks because of all the hard work. The participants learned the rules, and such basics as to where to position onerself on the court, and how to make a proper swing at the ball. All four courts were used and everyone had a great time. Kim is planning on future events to host other junior participants from other clubs in Colorado Springs and Denver to join us, and for us to visit them at their clubs. It would be great to field a competitive team from Colorado Springs YMCA's to enter tournaments and play in state and national events. Watch for the flyers for the next clinic, and come enjoy the fun!
❏ Thumbs up: Eddie Meredith and Lynmar Racquet Club are again a happy couple, proven nicely by the very successful State Games of America Racquetball division being held there in July.

fter a shaky start, the Colorado Athletic Club / Aurora mounted a determined comeback defeating Lynmar Racquet Club, 308 to 242, to win the 20th Annual Pepsi Cup / Colorado Team Racquetball Championships. This brought the Pepsi Cup back to the CAC after having lost the previous year to the same team. It wasn't until late Saturday afternoon that the outcome appeared on the wall when the CAC defeated Lynmar in a number of direct match-ups. The 2005 win means the CAC / Aurora team has now won the Pepsi Cup six times. Five of those were consecutive titles from 1999 through 2003-a great accomplishment at any level.

Perhaps the biggest upset wasn't the overall title, but the recreational title. The Littleton Family YMCA, formerly known as Highline YMCA, was a great example of quality over quantity. Using their 11-person team to the best of their abilities, they overcame some big odds to defeat perennial champs, the Goodson Recreation Center. They played tough, came through when it counted, and won a very, very close battle, 114 to 113.
Dave Guentert showed why he's the current Men's Open State Champ, besting John Rhodes 11-15, 15-2, 11-10 in the finals. It wasn't an easy task getting there either. He played tiebreakers in every match. You know what they say -- it's not how you get there, it's what you do when you get there. The Denver Athletic Club's Jo Shattuck won the Women's Open. The big story was the surprising play of Janelle Williams of the CAC/Aurora. It probably wasn't that surprising to her, but it was to Jennifer Lynch and Barb Mehegan, both of whom came out on the short end of the stick. In the end, though, Jo proved out the dairy farmer's principle - the cream always rises to the top. This was no exception. This year's tournament drew 14 clubs and over 150 players, counting double events. That makes this year's event one of the larger draws of the 04/05 season and a great way to end the year.
