Our oldest went to visit my brother, who lives in Texas, a few weeks ago. She had an amazing time and reported on all the activities and conversations. One conversation in particular caught my attention. She asked him, “What do you want your “legacy” to be?” Wow!!! That was deep. This whole subject intrigued me. I started looking up definitions and interpretations for “legacy.” Many of the definitions revolved around money/and/or things to be left to family members, especially future generations. So, if we do not leave money for our children, have we left a poor “legacy” or no “legacy” at all? I also found that the term “inheritance” was used in conjunction or in place of “legacy.” This started getting a little confusing to me until I read an article by Rachel Cruze, 7 Bible Verses That Will Help You Leave a Legacy. She stated that “having something to leave to your kids or community: A Legacy.” She also stated that Proverbs 13:22 indicates that when we demonstrate godly character qualities, like integrity, trustworthiness, love, and compassion to those around us, especially the next generation. Ideally, our next generations will manage their blessings God’s way for His glory for a long, long time. If I were asked today about what I want my legacy to be, I would say that my children are my legacy, and they would be able to say that I want to know God as my mom and dad did.” Proverbs 13:22

One large area of service for Impact Therapy is families dealing with autism. As Jennifer puts it, “Obviously, we work with much more than autism, but autism is on the rise.
Impact Therapy is here to provide life changing therapy services. They offer speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy to aid in a wide variety of physical and developmental needs. Impact Therapy was founded by Jennifer Wenkel, who is herself a Speech Language Pathologist, or SLP. Speech Language Pathologists work with patients on a variety of issues including oral development and swallowing in addition to speech. She entered the field after being inspired by coworkers at Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta during previous graduate studies in psychology. The SLPs at Marcus worked with clients to assist with eating and swallowing. As Jennifer explains, picky eating is a common occurrence in individuals with autism, and it is often caused by an oral muscle issue rather than just a limited interest in food. She was able to see the SLPs at Marcus work with patients to strengthen their muscles and correct eating issues. She was so inspired by the effectiveness of their work that she left her psychology graduate program to pursue a 16

Jamison Machen, one of Impact’s full time Speech Language Pathologists, speaks very highly of her son’s experience with the “Build a Stuffie” workshop. Tasks like putting a stuffed heart into the animal and putting it back together emphasized fine motor skill development and helped her son to feel confidence and pride. The stuffie he built as a memento is now a treasured friend. “That stuffed animal goes everywhere with him,” she laughs. One large area of service for Impact Therapy is families dealing with autism. show that early intervention is key.” Impact sees families dealing with all stages of the diagnosis and intervention process, often beginning when parents suspect autism may be a factor but there has not yet been a diagnosis. Professionals at Impact are able to walk with families and counsel them through evaluation and next steps, and they’re able to provide therapeutic services to help children reach developmental milestones and achieve school readiness. “Early intervention plays a big role in all of that,” Jennifer says. “We work on receptive and expressive language, social pragmatic skills, and the feeding even comes into that when parents are concerned their children will not eat at school for different reasons.” Occupational therapy can help with tasks like getting ready for school and regulating sensory systems, and physical therapy helps with things like walking and mobility. The goal at Impact Therapy is to treat the whole patient. Jennifer has made a point to emphasize camaraderie and collaboration among providers and staff, and it has no doubt paid off. Patients and

For the past 40 years, Macon Medical Group has been dedicated to providing the highest quality healthcare services to every one of their patients in a compassionate and safe environment. The medical practice began serving the community in 1985, treating all kidney and hypertension-related needs. Founded by Dr. Ludwig Cavaliere and Dr. Azmi Kabbani, their core values focused on providing services with an individualized, patient-centered approach while always working in their best interest of every patient. Now after four decades, the staff still has that same commitment to ensuring that each patient’s health is the top priority. The staff of physicians, nurse practitioners, as well as a physician’s assistant all help to treat as well as educate patients and their families about kidney and hypertension-related conditions. They are: Dr. Swathi Singanamala, M.D., M.R.C.P.; Dr. Ahmad Kabbani; Dr. Natalie Guinn; Adam Rhoades, PAC; Heather Self, FNP-BC; Christopher Chang, AGACNP-BC; Catherine Faircloth, FNP-C; and Kamilah Griswold, FNP-C. Macon Medical Group not only takes great pride in providing the best care, but it’s also about building a community of support and compassion. “We love our community and believe in giving back to those who need

it most, which is why we offer free kidney screenings to anyone outside our offices,” says Kendell Floyd, Marketing Director for the practice. “We also believe that everyone should have access to comprehensive care, regardless of the source of payment; this is why we accept all insurances, including self-pay.” In August of last year, Macon Medical Group added another location in Warner Robins. With an office at 309 Osigian Boulevard, Macon Medical Group can now serve all of Houston County and provides multiple ancillary services at both locations. Diagnostic services include an in-house laboratory and ultrasound, which serves to provide our patients with same day results from routine lab work such as venipuncture and urinalysis. Therapeutic services consist of nutritional counseling, “Kidney Smart” classes, as well as anemia management. In-office ancillary services provide more rapid diagnoses with quicker initiation of treatment during office visits. “Our knowledgeable providers pour their hearts into every patient interaction, creating a bond of trust and understanding that goes beyond medical treatment.” Call Macon Medical Group at (478) 745-5455 to set up your appointment today.

Select a variation of any vegetables and roast in oven with olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.
How To Make
ONE: Start by boiling your water for the couscous and add chicken stock and pinch of sea salt. TWO: Mix together all the ingredients for the seasoning and press it onto the salmon, set it aside for a few minutes to marinate while you prep the veggies. THREE: Next, prepare all of the (roast in the oven on 400 degrees for thirty minutes) veggies and set aside and cook the couscous on the stovetop in bone broth if desired. Toss the veggies and in the couscous and set aside. FOUR: When ready, heat a skillet with oil and add on the salmon filets- face down. Cook on medium to low heat for 2-3 minutes, flip and cook until internal temperature reaches 145F. FIVE: Topped with Cajun sauce over salmon
Ingredients
The ingredients used in this cajun cream sauce recipe are the key to its delicious and bold flavor. • Butter: adds richness and flavor to the sauce, used for sautéing the garlic. • Garlic cloves: gives the sauce a deliciously fragrant and savory taste. • White wine: adds depth of flavor and acidity to the sauce, lifting any bits of garlic from the bottom of the pan. • Cajun seasoning: provides the signature cajun flavor and heat to the sauce. • Other spices: sweet paprika and dried oregano, both provide more flavor. • Heavy cream: adds richness and creaminess to the sauce. • Parmesan cheese: adds a nutty and salty flavor to the sauce. • Fresh parsley: adds a fresh herbaceous flavor and brightens the dish. • Spinach is optional
How to Make Cajun Cream Sauce
This sauce with cajun seasoning and heavy cream is easy to make and will be a quick recipe ready in under 30 minutes. You can whip it up last while making the rest of your meal. • Sauté the minced garlic over medium heat with butter until fragrant. Deglaze with wine. • Add the cajun seasoning, and the other spices, and cook for a minute or two. • Add the cream and simmer until thickened; finish with the parmesan cheese and parsley right before serving. • 2 Tbsp. butter • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1/4 cup dry white wine • 1 1/2 tsp. Cajun seasoning • 1/2 tsp. sweet paprika • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1–2 Tbsp. fresh minced parsley • 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice, optional
Instructions
• In a large non stick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. • Add wine and cook until reduced by half, about 2 minutes. • Stir in Cajun seasoning, paprika, and oregano. Cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. • Add cream and bring to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Whisk in Parmesan cheese and parsley. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If desired, add lemon juice. Hometown Living At Its Best 39

Advanced Dental Technologies Give Patients Something to Smile About
D
Dr. Louis Shelton and Dr. Grant Shelton agree that one of the most common questions from their patients is, “How can I replace this missing tooth?” Until recently, replacement for natural teeth required making a removable appliance like a partial or shaving down adjacent teeth to fabricate a dental bridge, neither of which have the function or feel of a natural tooth. Thankfully, in recent years dental implant technology has improved in its capability to esthetically and functionally replace teeth. Although the process for tooth replacement with an implant can seem quite daunting at first, today it is a much more streamlined and painless process. First, the dental implant is placed precisely with a guide to ensure ideal position for the final crown. The patient’s body then adapts to the implant surface itself, making a secure and stable platform on which to place the prosthetic tooth. After three months of healing and strengthening, the implant is ready for a crown. For this final step, patients do not even have to be numbed to receive their new implant crown and begin enjoying their smiles again! At Perry Dental Associates, Dr. Louis Shelton and Dr. Grant Shelton combine thirty years of experience with cutting edge dental technologies and a commitment to serve their community with the best in oral health advancements. Now, that’s something to smile about!

Houston County is home to the only winery in Georgia owned and operated by an African American family.

In these most uncertain times, it’s almost imperative
for all of us to find ways to help alleviate the stress from our busy lives. And while prying our hands away from our digital devices can be difficult, it’s not altogether impossible - provided that there’s an activity worth embarking on. Take wine tasting, for example. Visiting a winery can offer a fresh alternative to those seeking new experiences. Wine tasting basically allows you to sample locally-made wines while you learn about the fascinating process of winemaking. The visit can even help to develop

service job at Warner Robins Air Force Base eight years ago. He also says that his operation is the only one in Georgia owned and operated by African Americans. Robert’s family hails from the small town of Utica, Mississippi. Although there was a long tradition of winemaking among members of his family, Robert never considered becoming a winemaker himself – that is, until he was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1999. “After the diagnosis, I was out of work for fifteen months. I was looking for something to do once I retired, so I began exploring the health benefits of the muscadine grape since my family used to make wine from it. That particular grape has the highest amount of antioxidants,” explains the 72-year-old vintner. One such antioxidant, resveratrol, can actually help the body fight diseases and is now being used as a nutraceutical. After obtaining some muscadines from a neighbor a few months later, Robert set out to

plant them in the three acres behind his house. “At first we wanted to test to see what they tasted like before selling the wine to the public. After we were satisfied, we then obtained our license. We also had to make sure we had enough to sell.” Robert soon began selling bottles from underneath his carport before construction of the winery was underway. Robert’s son LeQuintiss Taylor, who oversees sales and marketing, echoes his father’s praises of the muscadine grape. “My father started growing his grapes back in 1994, but he actually didn’t start selling wines until 2004, when we launched the label and built the winery. He really wanted to make a product that was healthy, so it seemed only natural to make wines out of a grape that can benefit you.” Indeed, whether it’s helping with the symptoms of arthritis, constipation, or high blood pressure, the benefits of the muscadine grape are many. Over the years, Tilford Winery has become known for its tasty wines as well as the juices made from muscadine grapes. Specifically, the Taylors use Magnolia and Carlos varieties of muscadine
Although he still has input in the winery’s daily operations, Robert is passing the baton to the next generation as LeQuintiss and the rest of the family to help continue his vision for Tilford Winery and help usher in a new age for the family business. “I look forward to continue educating the public and helping to raise awareness about the medicinal benefits of our grapes,” says LeQuintiss.

to make their white wines and juice, while the Noble is their grape of choice for red. “It’s actually the only grape that grows naturally throughout the Southeast, without the aid of pesticides or chemicals added,” explains LeQuintiss. This contrasts with the European varieties grown in north Georgia, which require the help of fungicides to help grow them. “Our wines and juices are 100% organic and contain no additives.” The Taylor family’s passion for wine is evident in the way they run their winery in Houston County. “We begin harvesting in mid-August and continue through Tilford Winery also conducts tastings each week, ensuring that each customer receives a personalized

Tilford Winery also conducts tastings each week, ensuring that each customer receives a personalized experience to the wines. Visitors can see the vats where the grapes are fermented, and the entire process of harvesting and making the muscadine wine is explained. “Our grapes grow naturally and are totally free of sulfites,” Robert says proudly. To vino lovers, that may mean that the family’s wines are essentially headache-free. The winery even offers four varieties: a full bodied red noble, a blush wine, a white wine and a bronze wine. “All of our wines come in sweet, dry and semi-sweet.” From its humble beginnings in Houston County, the Taylor family eventually expanded its venture to several vineyards throughout Middle Georgia, Mississippi, and even Texas. Thus, their wines will continue to grow as bountifully as their grapes do. Along with sales at the winery, the Taylors also sell their products to consumers online and ship throughout the world. During the pandemic, Tilford Winery began offering virtual wine tastings to several Fortune 500 companies and Nonprofit Organizations as team building events. With their winery’s growing reputation, even Hollywood took notice. In 2021, LeQuintiss was recruited as the wine consultant

For the past forty years, we have been proud to be a source of comfort and assistance to countless individuals and families who are facing a terminal illness.” Volunteer Louann Watson joined Heart of Georgia after witnessing firsthand how dedicated the staff was to providing the best hospice care available. Back in 2022, her husband John was on service for lung cancer, and Louann became so impressed with the care that he received that she was inspired to join the organization a few months after his passing. “Everyone involved with John’s care was just wonderful,” she recalls. “His team did everything they could to put him at ease. From the chaplain to the social workers and his nurses, everyone provided the very best care to us. They also really had some great times with John, and it meant so much to him. Now as a volunteer, I can give back to the same hospice that helped me and my family through a very difficult time.”

One of the most remarkable aspects of Heart of Georgia Hospice is the continuity of care provided by its staff. Many of the team members have been with the organization for decades, exemplifying an unwavering dedication to their mission. Robin Teal, who has served as Volunteer Coordinator for the past eleven years, exemplifies the enduring spirit of the organization. “Our hospice is faith-based, and I love being able to share our ministry with others,” she says. “It’s truly inspiring when I witness how God helps to intertwine and connect people. For five decades now, National Exterminating has helped residents in Middle Georgia with their pest control needs.
O Owning and operating your own business is definitely not
for the faint of heart. According to the latest data, roughly 20% of businesses fail within the first year, and about 50% go on to
falter by year five. In the face of these sobering statistics and the precariousness of the economy, it takes a special kind of talented individual (or company) to combine all the attributes that can make a successful business venture. Whether it’s great customer service, a savvy business sense, loyal employees, or a clear vision for the company, one would have to combine all the right elements in order to run a thriving business nowadays.

83
The late Jim Hegwood certainly found the “winning formula” when he founded National Exterminating in the early 70s. Jim already had some experience in the pest control industry under his belt, and he was known to be a savvy businessman. Thus, he took the proverbial leap of faith when he and his son Roger began the company back in July of 1974. By all accounts, “Mr. Jim,” as he was known, was a people person who found satisfaction in helping folks whenever he could. “He was a hard worker, had a great sense of humor, and he always enjoyed being around people and getting to know them,” recalls Jim’s son Roger, who now serves as the company’s president. “He was also pretty adept at hiring the right person for the job – honest, hardworking individuals that would help the company grow.” 84

Always a very family-oriented man, Jim planned on opening his new pest control business when his son Roger finished with his studies at the University of Georgia. “At the time our country was in a recession, and I just really needed a job,” recalls Roger. “I had one more quarter to go in school, so I sold my motorcycle for $750 to cover my last quarter’s expenses. I then started doing some termite control work for him as well as any job that needed doing. We started our business with only three employees and grew from there.” Roger jokes that their first ‘marketing strategy’ was to go have coffee at Manor Pharmacy in order to get to know the local businessmen. “ Jim’s wife, Sarah, began working as secretary in a tiny office that was the business’s first location around the time that Roger joined his parents. National Exterminating truly became a family affair when Roger’s daughter, Hilary Hegwood, expressed some interest in working for the family as well. She had been working at on and off for her father during summers while she attended college. “Granddaddy had told me that he wanted me to work for him one day, and that meant a lot to me.” After a trip to Napa Valley as well as a journalism internship in Augusta that didn’t inspire her, Hilary made a decision. “After a couple of

Owning and operating your own business is definitely not for the faint of heart. According to the latest data, roughly 20% of businesses fail within the first year, and about 50% go on to falter by year five. In the face of these sobering statistics and the precariousness of the economy, it takes a special kind of talented individual (or company) to combine all the attributes that can make a successful business venture.
been a ‘voice of reason’ for our company. You see, we’re not just a family business; we’re also a family-oriented business.” Today, Hilary and her father oversee the family business and are committed to running National Exterminating in a way that would make Mr. Jim proud. “I’ve done this work all my life, and I was lucky to be part of it from the beginning,” explains Roger. “It was one of the best decisions I ever made. For fifty years now, we have provided a service that protects our customers’ health and property. We’ve always tried

to just outwork our competition, and I think that’s the key to our longevity.” Longtime customer Judith Ross has been a customer since 1987, and she says she wouldn’t go anywhere else for her pest control needs. “I’m a builder, so they’ve always done pre-treatments for me. They’re just good hometown people; they are always responsible, professional and have always been there for me. They also provide pest control for my home and rental properties as well. I highly recommend them.” For half a century now, National Exterminating has built a solid reputation of going above and beyond to serve their customers. “I believe we’ve been successful for all this time because of our dedication to customer service,” explains Hilary. “The old fashioned values of honesty, loyalty and dedication to your job withstand the test of time. We still provide a very personalized touch in the way we do business.”

Premier South Electrical offers superior service to propel your home or commercial space into the optimal expanse it was created to be. Owners Matthew Guillory and Justin Peacock started Premier South Electrical in 2022 with great aspirations for the impact their work could have on the community. The pair met working alongside one another in 2014 at a company where they spent five years building a foundation of what would later become their own great business partnership. Over time, Matthew and Justin sharpened their craft and pursued other electrical opportunities before teaming up to go into business. “We wanted a company where we would treat our employees in the field the way we always wish we had been treated,” Matthew says. “In committing to this, we provide our employees with insurance, pensions, and above-average wages.” For our customers, we work tirelessly to provide a seamless experience that far surpasses their expectations. We pride ourselves on speedy response times and efficient work, all conducted in a timely manner. We offer electrical service work, home additions, new construction, remodeling, and repair. We run a team with four additional electricians who are highly trained and skilled in the field. “Whether it be a home, commercial building, or industrial, there’s really nothing out there that we can’t do between the two of us,” Justin says. “If it has a wire going to it, we can do it.” We hold ourselves to a higher standard than other companies to ensure our customers’ satisfaction. “You’re going to get quality work,” Matthew says. “And if there’s an issue with it or something went wrong, we’re back to fix it without charge. If it was on us, we’ll always make it right.” We offer the community honest service, reliability, and outstanding professionalism they can count on.

Someone once said that you actually become a cancer survivor on the day of your diagnosis. For 35-year-old Christa Bernard, that day was February 13, 2023. On that fateful Monday, she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, a form of breast cancer, and the diagnosis could not have come at a more inopportune time in her life. “Back in December of 2022, I was pregnant with my daughter Arya,” recalls Christa, “and I went to scratch under my arm and felt a knot. I initially thought it was related to hormones, but my midwife ordered an ultrasound as well as a mammogram just to be on the safe side.” In February of 2023, Christa and her husband Evan welcomed their daughter, Arya, into the world. However, just three days later, she received

the diagnosis that would throw their blissful world into a tailspin. “I felt scared, overwhelmed, and unsure about everything,” recalls Christa. A myriad of questions and scenarios went through her head. “I thought, ‘I’m too young, I have young kids who need their mom.’ I had also just found the love of my life, and we weren’t even married a year yet.” The day after her diagnosis, Christa met with Houston Healthcare’s nurse

navigator, who informed her about a nonprofit organization based out of Macon for breast cancer survivors. “She didn’t elaborate on the non-profit, except to say that they would reach out to me. I signed the referral, but little did I know it would lead me to one of my biggest blessings – United in Pink.” As was the case with Christa and her family, a breast cancer diagnosis affects every family member, and it creates
Breast cancer makes up about 30% of all new cancer cases in women in the United States. While these women’s lives are forever altered by the disease, Laura Paxton finds fulfillment in sharing her experiences while helping to ease this heavy burden for others. “I love helping people in their time of need: listening to them, sharing tears, sharing laughter, and celebrating milestones.
emotional, social, and financial challenges for all involved. Luckily for Christa, though, United in Pink helped to support each of her family members on their difficult journey, providing tailored programming for her spouse and children. Founded in 2007, United in Pink is central Georgia’s breast cancer family resource provider of emotional, social, and financial support for cancer patients and their families. “We aim to reduce the distress of a breast cancer diagnosis by providing essential support services that allow families to recover, heal, and thrive,” says Laura Paxton, co-founder and Executive Director. “We are unique in that we focus on care and support for each family member while still meeting the needs of breast cancer survivors. These support services are free and available to all, regardless of diagnosis or stage.” Laura has a very personal and profound connection to the disease, one that ultimately led to the organization’s inception. “United in Pink was started after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 21 years ago,” she recalls. “As a way to thank her friends and family who cared for her during treatment, she organized a fundraiser to honor others in our community who had also conquered this disease. During that event, they had a survivor ceremony, and the moment my mom stood on that stage, I was overcome with emotion. I felt a calling that we were supposed to do more.” She recognized the need for providing comprehensive support beyond medical treatment for cancer patients. Over the course of two years, Laura, her mother, and her friends held another fundraiser. They also spoke with other survivors and listened to the needs of the community. They realized there

Now cancer-free, Christa Bernard says she firmly believes that God placed United in Pink in her life for a reason. “Not everyone has a family or a support system they can rely on; United in Pink is that family. I have made so many great connections at the workshops and events hosted by Laura and her team. Along with my family, United in Pink stood with us and helped me fight this journey, and I look forward to watching the organization grow as it blesses Houston County survivors and their families.”

was a gap in the support for younger women diagnosed with breast cancer, for their spouses and their children as well. “From our humble beginnings to our everyday work, family has always been the common thread.” What would ultimately become United in Pink was never a planned entity, according to Laura. “From the start, it has always been God-led and divinely inspired,” she says. “We were driven by a heart to support others.” In 2007, the organization received its approval for non-profit registration from the Secretary of State with the mission of providing support to families affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. United in Pink is currently made up of a small team of four people. “Together, we

work to provide care and support to local families, raise necessary funding, and sustain this organization for years to come,” explains Laura. “In addition to our team, we are blessed with over 700 volunteers who assist us throughout the year.” Thus, what began as a grassroots fundraiser initiated by Laura’s mother Sandy has now evolved into a central support network for breast cancer patients and their families in central Georgia. “100% of the funds we raise stay right here in central Georgia,” says Laura proudly, “and our services are available to any individual, male or female, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.” United in Pink’s emphasis on family, relationships, and community support reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by all family members after a breast cancer diagnosis. “They not only offer practical assistance, but they also help to foster a sense of belonging during what can be an incredibly difficult time,” explains Christa Bernard. “For example, three of my kids attended United in Pink’s kids’ camp this past summer. They had an absolute blast. Also, my medical bills started coming in, which was

Our goal is to listen to each patient’s needs and coordinate a care plan that is unique to their family.” Some of the organization’s resources include: Pink Packs, which are comfort care packages provided to the survivor, their spouse/caregiver, and to each of their children, meals, educational monthly programs, counseling services, as well as financial assistance. There’s even a summer camp, a weeklong therapeutic day camp that promotes healthy coping skills for the children and grandchildren of cancer survivors.” Now cancer-free, Christa Bernard says she firmly believes that God placed United in Pink in her life for a reason. “Not everyone has a family or a support system they can rely on; United in Pink is that family. creek, like Mossy Creek, or a pond, and go fishing every weekend, usually at my grandparents’ house in Fort Valley.” After graduating from high school, Modd moved to Florida to attend technical school. However, when his grandparents began to have some medical issues, he decided to move back to the area. “I purchased my first kayak while I was still in Jacksonville so that I could incorporate my love for fishing with kayaking,” he explains. “My first kayak was a cheap one, only $100, but it had rod holders, so that was all I needed.” After returning to Warner Robins in 2018, Modd says he first tried convincing his friends to purchase their own kayaks so they could share his new passion. It was then that he had an epiphany. “I came up with the idea of purchasing several kayaks myself so that my friends could accompany me. I didn’t have any intention of starting a business; I just wanted to go kayaking with them and catch some fish. We soon realized that we could give guided kayak tours on Houston Lake.”

I’m also certified in first aid and CPR.” Modd’s business began in earnest in 2023, and grew steadily over the next few months, notwithstanding the winter season. “It basically grew through word of mouth, social media and self-promotion,” he says.

Warner Robins native Sara Fowler made her authorial debut with the publication of her first children’s book, Castle of Knots, in September. Sara, a mother of two and former high school English teacher, always dreamed of becoming a writer. As a child, she attended writing camp at Mercer University. She went on to share her love of literature with her students. For years, however, Sara struggled to find her identity as an author. She brainstormed concepts for novels, which she assumed would be her path to the

profession. For all that time, Sara says she was so focused on figuring out what to write a book about that she didn’t take the time to figure out who she was as a writer. Despite being exposed to children’s books as a teacher and mother, writing children’s books didn’t cross her mind for the longest time. Looking back, Sara has always recognized the usefulness of the genre. She even remembers using children’s books to teach figurative language concepts to her high school students. It wasn’t until her daughter planted the seed one morning by describing her hair as a ‘castle of knots’ that Sara was inspired to write within the genre herself. Once she had the idea, the manuscript came together quickly – only a few days from start to finish. The finished work is clever, presenting the everyday struggle of a mother and daughter getting ready for school as a mixed metaphor in which a knight rescues a princess. Though quick, the writing process was complex. Sara chose to tell different stories simultaneously, one through words and one through pictures. She sat down and created a storyboard with color-coded sticky notes to designate the flow of the

stories together to ensure her metaphor aligned. The result is a story that reads like a fairytale, complete with classic fairytale language and tropes, accompanied by pictures that show the underlying metaphor, a mother with her morning coffee on a valiant journey to fight her way through the tangles and send her princess off to school. Once Sara felt confident about her prose, she reached out to Between Friends Coffee for help choosing an illustrator. In addition to selling coffee, food, and books, the literary themed Warner Robins coffee shop runs an independent publishing company. Through this service, Sara connected with local artist Ivy Giddens. “I can’t thank her enough because she really did have to carry a whole story on her own in
many ways,” Sara remarks. Of her illustrating work, Ivy says, “I had a wonderful experience working on this book and I’m so glad that it got to be my first foray into storybook illustration. It was the perfect mashup of fun – a hair castle is such a good idea – while also having the coziness that I felt from all my favorite picture books growing up.” Jaime Miller, co-owner of Between Friends, went on to edit Castle of Knots. The book was written, illustrated, and edited by local talent, and Sara self-published the title. The work is a great example of the literary world today. As Sara explains it, the ability to self-publish has revolutionized the industry, making it “much more attainable” than it was ten or twenty years ago. Sara has enjoyed the journey of self-

publication and taking on the additional task of marketing her work without a traditional publishing company to do so. In order to make others aware of her book’s release, Sara started an Instagram page dedicated to her work as an author. She learned from other self-published authors and created an online presence in order to grow her following. On her page, Sara posts about upcoming and recent events, discusses educational strategies, reviews other children’s books, and sets goals for herself. This is a common strategy for authors to connect with other authors and readers, and Sara has jumped in headfirst. Her marketing also takes a much more traditional approach with local release parties

and storytimes. Events following the launch in September included a launch party at Between Friends and storytimes at locations including the Galleria Mall, Little Sweeties, and Gottwals Books. Sara says she really enjoys the storytimes and loves meeting young readers and seeing them enjoy her book and accompanying activities like cookie decorating at Little Sweeties. Soon, Sara plans to visit local schools to introduce the book in classrooms and encourage excitement around reading. Teachers and parents can enhance the experience of Castle of Knots by downloading free supplemental worksheets for all reading levels. While there’s not much to be done about the fact that these books are showing up so frequently, it’s nice to know authors like Sara, illustrators like Ivy, and editors like Jaime are still setting out to write and publish

meaningful stories. “It is a labor of love and a huge accomplishment, and it’s great to see it out there,” Sara beams. Castle of Knots is charming and witty, meant to be enjoyed by kids and parents alike. “That was a big deal for me because I read so many children’s books myself,” Sara explains. The tongue in cheek description of the knight’s journey will give any parent that has a similar morning routine reason to chuckle along. The book accomplishes Sara’s goal to create space for conversations about difficult topics or tasks families may encounter. Sara plans to take on the same challenge in her future works, one of which she hopes to publish early next year. The inspiration to write Castle of Knots eventually made clear the answer to the type of writer she is. Now, she knows her passion lies in writing children’s books. She is setting out to “bring magic to families’ lives” and to create beauty around difficult topics. Castle of Knots successfully does that, and there’s no doubt Sara will continue to create beautiful stories in the future. Rebecca Anne Bearden’s story reminds us all that true success isn’t about reaching the top—it’s about using that platform to bring others along, helping them to rise. And with her passion and dedication, Rebecca is doing just that.
Rebecca’s Holistic Approach to Community Impact Rebecca’s approach to Genesis Joy House is rooted in the belief that true transformation happens when we address both immediate needs and long-term goals. “It’s not just about providing shelter—it’s about creating an environment where women can regain independence, find stability, and move toward success,” Rebecca explains. Her leadership has already had a profound impact. Through innovative use of social media and digital marketing, Rebecca has raised awareness of Genesis Joy House’s mission, attracting new donors and forging partnerships with local businesses and national organizations. She has also helped strengthen fundraising initiatives, ensuring the shelter can meet the growing demand for its services. What sets Rebecca apart, however, is her unwavering dedication to the cause. She doesn’t just strategize from behind a desk—she’s on the front lines, connecting with donors, volunteers, and residents alike. Whether hosting a fundraiser or listening to the stories of women who have stayed at Genesis Joy House, Rebecca’s holistic approach ensures that every aspect of the shelter’s work reflects her deep commitment to empowering others.
What’s Next for Genesis Joy House? As Genesis Joy House continues to grow, Rebecca is focused on diversifying the shelter’s revenue streams to ensure its long-term sustainability.
