MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Warmest greetings to all of you on the occasion of our 2021 Prize-Giving Ceremony in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand – as awardees, families and friends, and members of the Wits Community. This is an important and defining moment for all of you as prize winners, as we celebrate your intellectual achievements and academic excellence, especially so in this immensely challenging time of a continuing global pandemic. Because of your commitment and through your hard work and dedication to your studies, you have done exceptionally well, and for that I congratulate you all!

Despite not being able to conduct our awards ceremony in a face-to-face mode this year again, it is nevertheless important to continue to honour those of you who have performed in such an exemplary manner. It is therefore my absolute privilege to acknowledge you today as the best and the brightest minds, as the change agents of today, and as the leaders of tomorrow. Ours is a Faculty of just under 10 000 students, of which approximately 68% are undergraduates and 32% are postgraduates. We, as the Faculty of Humanities, were ranked No. 1 in Africa in a 2019/2020 global survey of 536 universities, with a special mention for the quality of our research and teaching. The Humanities Faculty at Wits boasts renowned international scholars, many of whom you have already encountered, and I encourage you all to continue to rely on them for the fantastic resources that they are. The Humanities is a place for the development of robust thinking and debate that is done critically, but respectfully and with tolerance for diverse views. It is a place to think deeply about the future of the world, how we deal with the challenges facing us today, and how we think about transforming our societies to give rise to a set of imagined futures that are yet to unfold. We live in a world replete with challenges. Indeed, recent events at this University and across sites of higher education in South Africa have surfaced the deep inequities that continue to plague our society, especially in relation to accessible higher education. Universities have historically had a major part to play in interrogating the social fabric of our worlds. As students in this University, I urge you to use your remarkable achievements, and to contribute to eradicating the problems of our time. But, we also live in an exciting moment when we have the opportunities to change our futures for the betterment of all – and that is my challenge to all of you – fulfil your potential as the best and the brightest and engage these challenges head-on so that you may lead us as the next generation, and open

your minds to the new possibilities of what it means to be a citizen in the 21st century! And so, it is a real pleasure to be celebrating your achievements with you, alongside your families and friends, and the staff members who have given so generously of their time and their expertise to contribute to your development. For those of you entering the world of work, your amazing new futures are right before you. Go out there and seize them! Some among you are doing exciting postgraduate work, and the opportunity to study further must be cherished. Some among you are in the working world. I want to encourage you to return to the Faculty and pursue your postgraduate studies. To those of you completing your first degree, I urge you to enrol in your next degree and continue your record of excellence in academic achievement. To our awardees, thank you for the amazing efforts that you have expended on attaining these achievements during the time of a global pandemic. To your families and friends, thank you for the unwavering support to get our students to this point of success, despite the unprecedented times that we are living through. To our staff, thank you for the exceptional commitment to creating a new layer of critical thinkers and doers in our society, under significantly constrained circumstances. To our sponsors and donors who have so graciously continued to support our Prize-Giving events, our deep gratitude for your ongoing support of our students, Faculty and institution. And to the members of the Faculty Registry who have coordinated this entire awards event, my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for so tirelessly working in the service of our staff and students. Allow me to congratulate all of you as awardees once more. I also want to wish you all the best for 2021 and beyond. We at Wits are confident that you will rise to the occasion in any future that confronts you, meeting the challenges, and ultimately emerging the better for it.

Prof. Garth Stevens Dean: Faculty of Humanities
