The First Class
Who are the new ’60s X-Men from the latest mutant movie?
T
he X-Men movies are the Snickers candy bars of film: packed with as many peanuts as they can fit, and delightfully delicious. The peanut gallery for X-Men: First Class holds a Blackbird full of mutants at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters (will that even be the name? We’ll have to find out!), as well as the Hellfire Club and Azazel, Nightcrawler’s dad. But who’s filling the seats of the school? We matched comic lore with movie trailer detective work to track down who’s on the attendance list...
Professor X (James McAvoy) Charles Xavier is the rock that the X-Men are built on, so a young version of him in a prequel was a no-brainer. Instead of de-aging Patrick Stewart, like Brett Ratner did in X-Men: The Last Stand, The Last King of Scotland’s James McAvoy got the part. From the trailers, we already know that Xavier can walk and has the capital to buy/ build a stealth jet, but it will be exciting to see how a young Professor X’s mental powers will manifest in the course of the film. And maybe we’ll see how he loses his hair! (Or would they save that for a sequel?)
Magneto (Michael Fassbender) We’ve already seen Erik Lehnsherr as a good guy in the second X-Men movie, but in First Class we see him when he was still altruistic and less “use the Statue of Liberty to make everyone a mutant through magnetism.” We get to witness his transition out of the concentration camps of World War II, and his first meeting with Professor X. In the comics, they met in Israel, but in the cinematic world, anything’s possible. However, he’s not all sugar and spice. The trailers have shown him taking down anyone who stands in his way (literally), as well as going up against the US military and wrecking one of their submarines. Remember, you’re not a bad guy until you wreck a sub.

X-MEN SPECIAL EDITION
Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) Raven Darkholme appeared in the other X-movies, portrayed by Rebecca Romijn. The younger version of her promises to be less comfortable with her shape-changing powers, and fighting for the heroes’ side, as well as sparking a relationship with Hank McCoy, aka Beast. In Marvel continuity, she’s been on numerous teams—like the Brotherhood of Mutants, Freedom Force, the Dark X-Men, or even X-Factor—but she’s always had a scheming nature, which will be interesting to see if it eventually complicates matters.
Beast (Nicholas Hoult) We only got a taste of Beast in the third X-Men, but Kelsey Grammer’s performance alluded to a long history with the X-Men. Nicholas Hoult has some big shoes to fill, but from what we’ve seen so far he brings an emotional vulnerability and shyness to the character that neither Grammer nor the comics showed before. Hank McCoy showed up in the first issue of X-Men in 1963, looking more like Hoult than a ball of blue fur, though there’s reason to believe that maybe we’ll see both incarnations.
Havok (Lucas Till) Cyclops’s brother steps into the spotlight for the prequel, and seems to be the only mutant who digs his powers: plasma blasts that really tear things up. While he went with the ’90s era leather jacket and tights for a while, he’s most remembered for his original black costume with concentric circles on the chest. Luckily for comic fans, that’s an element that’s carried over to the films. While Beast represents agility, and Mystique represents stealth, Havok is all about raw power. We’re introduced to him in the film in a prison cell, and he warns us that when he uses his powers, “bad things tend to happen.” Expect a lot of fire and explosions from this guy.

X-MEN SPECIAL EDITION
Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones) Screaming Sean Cassidy was a leader of an X-team himself for a while. Along with White Queen Emma Frost (played in the film by January Jones), Banshee led the teen mutants Generation X through the ’90s. With a mastery of his voice, Banshee can shatter glass and fly on supersonic waves of sound, both of which are shown in the film. In the comics, he was also romantically linked with Dr. Moira McTaggert, who’s also in the First Class film (played by Rose Byrne). Will they get together, or will that part of Banshee’s history be left for comic book historians?
Angel Salvadore (Zoë Kravitz) Leave it to rock star Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet to give their daughter a name with two dots (a “trema”) over the e. We never thought that Angel would make it into the movies, but we can’t be happier that she’s there. Her insect wings look great on the screen, but time will tell if she spits acid like her comic counterpart.
Darwin (Edi Gathedi) Only five years since his first appearance, Darwin makes the jump from comics to screen. He’s a newcomer in some respects, but his character was an X-man before there were even X-Men. Confused? Darwin was part of a short-lived team put together by Charles Xavier that went on one mission and was defeated hard. It wasn’t spoken of for years. Darwin’s the character we’ve seen the least of in the trailers, and it will be exciting to see how exactly his mutant powers are tested. We’ll find out June 3… -Ethan Kaye

X-Team Supreme
There have been periods during the X-Men’s nearly 50 years when the roster changed so frequently that Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters seemed more like a flophouse for wayward mutants and criminals—remember when Sabretooth and Juggernaut were on the team?—than the training ground for the world’s most elite team of mutant superheroes. With director Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” debuting an all-new team of mutants this week, we got to thinking about what the perfect X-Men team might look like. To help us in our task, we decided to track down the opinions of some of the top professionals who have worked on the X-Men books over the years.
X-MEN SPECIAL EDITION We started with the premise that Charles Xavier is still running the show (we miss you, Chuck!), which covers the need for a telepath, and then asked each creator to suggest one character that they feel is absolutely essential to the be-all and end-all of X-Men teams. Here’s the winning lineup:
The Leader: CYCLOPS Like any team, the X-Men need a leader, someone who can bring the disparate members of the group together and rally them toward a common goal. Cyclops’ years of experience, strong belief in a future where humans and mutants are equal, and his selflessness when it comes to his fellow mutants, all combine to make him the perfect leader of the X-Men. “ For the one character that has to be on the team, I would probably say the classic Cyclops, the leader and tactician who believes so strongly in Xavier’s vision for mutants. Though he may not be as powerful or flashy as some of the other X-Men, he’s always the one to keep the group as a whole going.” —Brandon Peterson, X-Men artist and former Art Director of CrossGen Comics
The Force of Nature: STORM Whether they are being cornered on the street by an angry mob of close-minded humans or squaring off against an invading army of Badoon, it’s important for the X-Men to have the ability to clear the playing field. Storm’s mastery of the forces of nature makes her ideally suited for dealing with situations requiring “crowd control.” She can produce a shower to cool down hot heads, galeforce winds to scatter foes, and devastating bolts of lightning to rend enemy armament asunder. “ I think Ororo (Storm) would be an essential piece of any X-Men dream team. She represents balance. She is capable of deep compassion as well as animalistic ferocity. Factor that with her extreme leadership abilities and you have a solid foundation on which to build. Oh yeah....she’s hot too.” —Tim Townsend, X-Men and Avengers inker
The Berserker: WOLVERINE When missions get too dangerous or too dirty, you need someone who is willing to embrace their own inner beast and do whatever it takes to get the job done. Nearly indestructible, with a century of combat experience and a berserker feral side boiling just beneath the surface, Wolverine is made for close-quarters “wet” combat. “ Imbued with the nobility of the Samurai, the unfettered spirit of the classic American cowboy, and the power and ferocity to maim and kill with impunity held in check by an unwavering moral compass, Wolverine is a man that time has misplaced. Perfectly.” — Marc Silvestri, X-Men artist and founder and CEO of Top Cow Productions

X-MEN SPECIAL EDITION
The Covert Operative: NIGHTCRAWLER The X-Men face deadly threats on an almost daily basis so it’s of paramount importance that they know who their enemies are, what they want, and what they are willing and capable of doing to get what they want. Nightcrawler’s acrobatic abilities, natural camouflage, and ability to teleport make him the X-Men’s ideal covert operative. “ You have to have a stealth member on the team, someone who can get in and out and provide reliable and current intel. That’s where Nightcrawler becomes invaluable. Besides, he has the coolest costume.” —Jeff Johnson, X-Men artist and storyboard artist for Transformers: Prime
The Powerhouse: NAMOR When confronted with overwhelming resistance, sometimes the best solution is to beat your enemy into submission with raw, physical power. Dubbed the “first mutant,” Namor is also one of the world’s most powerful mutants, possessing superhuman strength and resilience and the ability to fly—and swim, of course—at great speeds. Though usually not considered an X-Men candidate, Namor would make the perfect “shock and awe” team member. “ [Namor] has a Magneto-like disdain for humanity, and yet a deep love for them too. One of Marvel’s most powerful characters (as strong as the Hulk, intelligent, and he can fly!) he’s perfect as a centerpiece around which events could unfold, and as a monarch and rebel he’s got the chops to lead. But there’s also always lingering tragedy, forbidden love, and loss in his story too. Like all good mutant protagonists he’s (literally) a fish out of water.” —Liam Sharp, X-Men artist and co-founder of award-winning MamTor Publishing
The Toolbox: ROGUE All good teams have a utility player, someone whose large “toolbox” of skills and abilities makes them the perfect go-to person for unforeseen threats. With the ability to absorb the memories and powers of teammates and enemies alike, Rogue can make herself into the right tool for the job. She can also remove the threat an enemy poses by taking away their ability to inflict harm, making her an invaluable offensive and defensive weapon. “ Rogue is the sexiest member of the X-Men, and possesses an awesome power that comes with built-in drama. She’s the poster girl of what it means to be a super-powered mutant, with all the positives and negatives that it entails.” —Bob McLeod, X-Men artist and co-creator of The New Mutants -Brent Sprecher

‘First Class’ Missing in Action
Not even a rumored $120 million budget can fit in everything. Five things “X-Men: First Class” will be missing come June 3:
#1 Bryan Singer
#2 Revolving Room
#3 Alice Eve
Singer (who directed first two “X-Men” movies) turned down duties here to develop fairy tale fable “Jack the Giant Killer”; he remains onboard as a producer.
A dream sequence was planned that had team members fighting in a revolving room; when “Inception” beat them to the punch, director Matthew Vaughn was forced to scrap 12 pages of script and a set of storyboards.
The British actress was pursued for the part of telepath Emma Frost, but scheduling conflicts allowed January Jones (“Mad Men”) to step into the role. (Bet she didn’t see that one coming.)
#4 Sebastian Shaw’s Ponytail The malevolent leader of the Hellfire Club is ditching the mane: director Vaughn thought Kevin Bacon would “look ridiculous.” Little faith for the guy who made barn gymnastics work in “Footloose.”
#5 Stan Lee Marvel’s Godfather has been seen in the majority of recent adaptations, but filming in England kept Lee out of frame.

The real story behind the X-Men’s most clandestine villain group
1719
1980
Believe it or not, real iconoclastic social clubs called Hellfire Clubs existed through history! The first was founded by the Duke of Wharton in London, and was an exclusive co-ed society club where members performed mock religious ceremonies and drank a lot. A better-known Hellfire Club was founded by Sir Francis Dashwood in 1746. They met in caves and abbeys, dressed in ritual garb, and held massive members-only parties. Branches of this Hellfire Club sprung up in Ireland as well, and Benjamin Franklin was rumored to have attended some of their meetings.
In X-Men continuity, the Hellfire Club make their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #129, courtesy of Chris Claremont and John Byrne. The New York branch of the club consists of the wealthy and elite, while its Inner Circle of mutants plots to control world events. The initial group includes chess-themed positions, such as Emma Frost as the White Queen and Sebastian Shaw as the Black King. During the Dark Phoenix Saga, member Jason Wyngarde, aka Mastermind, attempts to control Jean Grey as the Phoenix, but triggers a tragic chain of events.

The White Queen is revealed to be the power behind the prep school the Massachusetts Academy, a school much like Professor X’s, but training her own band of mutant teens, the Hellions.
1984
The London branch of the Hellfire Club debuts in Excalibur #96. This version includes Margali Szardos, the adopted mother to Nightcrawler, and Captain Britain as the Black Bishop. There’s the usual Hellfire Club power grab that goes wrong when a demon is unleashed on London.
The Hellfire Club make their big screen debut in “X-Men: First Class”! Sebastian Shaw (who originally had a cameo in X2) and the White Queen (who originally had a cameo in “Wolverine: Origins”) are the main heavies in the film, played by Kevin Bacon and January Jones.
1996

1991
2005
After going through some membership changes (that included Magneto as Black King), the Hellfire Club were challenged by Shaw’s son, Shinobi, and a group called the Upstarts. Organized by the Black Queen, Selene, the Upstarts were formed as a way to choose who would join the new Inner Circle. Mutants like Shaw, Trevor Fitzroy, Fabian Cortez, and the Strucker twins competed to see who could kill the most highprofile mutants they could, with the winners getting full membership.
In Uncanny X-Men #454, years of Selene’s political machinations come crashing down in a story that wraps up plot points from 1999. Her control over her Black Rook, Roberto DeCosta, the former New Mutant named Sunspot, is destroyed during another massive Hellfire Club power struggle, this time by former member Donald Pierce. When all the dust settles, Sunspot is named Lord Imperial of the Hellfire Club, the highest position in the organization.

What If…
X-Men teams stretched back before the Swingin’ ’60s?
1920s – The Z-Men In keeping with the Jazz Age, Professor X is replaced with “Big Daddy Z,” the owner of a hot nightclub in Harlem. He’s joined by a ragtag bunch of dapper mutants, including at least one Anarchist (a pyrokinetic named “Doodles”), one person who tries to ban liquor all the time (a brash psychic named “Skitch”), and a society matron named “Abby,” a really stuffy old bird who can create earthquakes but doesn’t believe she should have the right to vote. Wolverine is also on the team.
1930s – T he Northeast Mutant Progress Authority With the country crippled by the Great Depression, one of the last railroad barons, C. Chichester Nicholls, is empowered by the New Deal to gather a band of mutants to construct public works. Not as exciting as later X-Men adventures, the Northeast Mutant Progress Authority spend most of their time building schools named after Abraham Lincoln and engineering bridges. Wolverine is also on the team.
1940s – T he Fightin’ Hellfires
Sure, Wolverine served with Captain America during WWII, but Cap’s got nothing on the Fightin’ Hellfires.
Plucked from the draft, young GIs with mutant powers like super strength and razor-sharp spikes jutting from their head are enlisted in Group 49, a unit known as the Fightin’ Hellfires. Unfortunately, the initiative is sparked in February of 1945, and the slow machinations of government don’t get the program on its feet by the time the bomb drops in August, so this task force is effectively grounded for the war. Most go back to civilian life, while the more dangerous mutants are sent to help fight Commies in Germany. Wolverine is also on the team. -Ethan Kaye

To Hell and Back Get caught up with Hellboy before this month s series shattering events i
By Casey Seijas Trying to keep up with Mike Mignola’s epic Hellboy franchise can often be, well, one hell of a task. Don’t get us wrong, we’re certainly not complaining—there’s no such thing as too much Hellboy. This month’s all-new, threepart mini-series from Dark Horse is called The Fury—writer Mignola is joined by legendary artist Richard Corben to spin yet another devilishly delightful tale featuring everyone’s favorite underworld castaway.
Given how many one-shots and mini-series have hit the shops over the past few years, however, there’s a good chance even the most stalwart fans of the B.P.R.D. staple may have missed a story arc or two. That’s where we come in, with the following recap of Hellboy’s adventures over the past few years, just in time to get you caught up prior to this month’s releases. (Oh, and consider yourself spoiler alerted.)
HELLBOY: THE WILD HUNT (art by Duncan Fegredo & Guy Davis): In this eight-issue mini-series (since collected), Hellboy finds himself at odds with a secret society of British noblemen, an army of Irish fairies and the fabled Queen of Blood. To make matters worse, he also discovers that he may in fact be the rightful heir to the Throne of England after discovering that his mother is entwined with King Arthur’s lineage.
HELLBOY: THE BRIDE OF HELL (art by Richard Corben): In this one-shot, Hellboy is tasked with tracking down a kidnapped 19-year-old girl, eventually finding himself in a remote French village where he squares off against the demon Asmodeus. And while this all may sound like a typical Hellboysmashin’-demons story, it is, at its heart, a tale of lost-loves. (Awww, how sweet.)
HELLBOY, IN MEXICO (OR, A DRUNKEN BLUR) (art by Corben): Hellboy reminisces about a past adventure in Mexico, where after a night of way too much tequila, he finds himself teaming up with a trio of vampire hunting luchadores hunting down the nightmarish Bat God. For even casual Hellboy fans, this one-shot is definitely worth picking up in a back-issue bin.
HELLBOY: THE STORM (art by Fegredo): Serving as the follow-up to The Wild Hunt and precursor to this month’s The Fury, The Storm finds Hellboy teaming up with longtime nemesis Baba Yaga to ensure the survival of mankind at the expense of a personal period of peace, and likewise, sets up a once-and-for-all showdown with the Queen of Blood (and her army), who discovers a mysterious and deadly source of power.
HELLBOY: DOUBLE FEATURE OF EVIL (art by Corben): As the title implies, this oneshot actually contains two different stories (framed as a moviehouse double feature being shown to a theater full of rotting and decayed corpses). The first “feature,” follows Hellboy on an investigation into a haunted house that urges its residents to kill people, only to find himself as another of its potential victims. The second, which could be considered a comedy in the Hellboy-verse, is a battle between the titular character and a man claiming to be an Egyptian priest, who sends an army of laughably defeatable mummies at Hellboy.
HELLBOY: THE SLEEPING AND THE DEAD (art by Scott Hampton): In the first team-up of Mignola and artist Hampton, Hellboy—in pursuit of a giant bat creature—comes across an old man who claims to have insider knowledge of a plot among vampires to bring on a bloody apocalypse. Naturally, Hellboy takes on the challenge but soon finds himself trapped in a castle basement, with only a horrible creature of death as his ally.
HELLBOY: BUSTER OAKLEY GETS HIS WISH (art by Kevin Nowlan): If you think Hellboy lore is restricted to only ancient myths and folklore, this one-shot explores a new genre: namely, sci-fi. Hellboy is trapped in a giant spacecraft, and must battle his way through deadly robots, strange space webbing, horrifying aliens and… mutated cows?! Yup, it’s a Hellboy story all right!
HELLBOY: THE FURY (art by Fegredo): In this, the third and final chapter of the trilogy (which includes the aforementioned miniseries The Wild Hunt and The Storm), war erupts between Hellboy and his newfound allies, and the Queen of Blood and her army of witches and other ghastly creatures. While all creative parties involved are tight-lipped on details, one thing everyone seems to admit is that this will be the end of one major chapter of Hellboy’s life and the start of a new one. Bring on Doomsday!

Lightning strikes twice in the sequel to 2009’s smash superhero adventure By Matt Cabral
C
ole MacGrath doesn’t sport a cape or cowl, but he’s about to prove himself as much a superhero as any of those do-gooders spawned from D.C.’s and Marvel’s paneled pages. Introduced in 2009’s inFamous, a PS3 exclusive spilled from the imaginations of Sly Cooper creators, Sucker Punch, Cole literally landed on the scene like a bolt of lightning. Beginning the game as a bike messenger, he accidentally delivers a package that goes “boom!”. Several city blocks are leveled, he’s granted electricity-based powers and, well, you can probably guess the rest: He searches for answers on what the heck‘s happened to him, goes through that whole “With great power comes great responsibility” thing, and cooks plenty of bad buys extra crispy behind the sort of special effects-spitting powers usually seen in summer blockbusters. Fast forward a couple of years and inFamous 2’s Cole, now comfortable in his crackling skin, is far more focused. The same sentiment applies to the game itself; boasting new powers, a revamped morality system, and a New Orleans-inspired setting, the sequel refines what worked in the original, but also adds plenty of fresh ideas to the mix. Fans of the franchise can count on all the original’s coolest aspects--explorable openworld, Karma decisions, baddie-juicing powers--to return in full force. However, it’s a number of new features that make this potential-packed sequel stand out like a lightning rod. The most obvious upgrades are the new electricity-laced abilities. Sure, Cole can still fire blue bolts from his fingertips and chuck shock grenades, but these old standbys look as threatening as a burnt-out light bulb next to his new powers. The Amp, a cattle prod-like melee weapon, allows him to fill foes full of volts in an up-close manner. Supported by cinematic animations and slo-mo finishing moves, this deadly device promises to deliver some of the game’s most visceral beatings. If you prefer to keep your distance from thugs while introducing them to their maker, you can holster the Amp in favor of the Ionic Vortex; a tornado-like killer coursing with high wattage, this baby will light up Cole’s worst enemies as well as the entire city block surrounding them.
Players can also acquire new foe-frying toys through inFamous 2’s revamped Karma system. Where the last game hit players over the head with obvious good or evil choices, the introduction of two potential allies aims to better integrate these decisions into the narrative. Siding with Kuo, a sexy ice-wielding goodytwo-shoes, or Nix, a not-so-nice lady who enjoys trapping things in flammable oil, gives Cole access to some of their unique abilities. So on top of better grounding this morality-testing mechanic with story-supporting characters, inFamous 2 will make it a new outlet to explore and evolve Cole’s skills. While hurling twisters at baddies and making new super friends (or enemies) should garner inFamous 2 plenty of buzz, its fresh setting also deserves some attention. Leaving the first game’s very comic book-y metropolis Empire City behind in favor of the southern New Marais could turn out to be the title’s coolest coup. Bursting with cultural flavor, the fresh setting serves as a far more interesting stage for Cole’s story. Swamplands, Red Light districts, historic cemeteries, swanky neighborhoods, and destroyed-by-natural-disaster towns make up the varied landscape and, of course, provide a fertile playground for Cole’s free-running skills. Whether traversing rooftops, grinding power lines, or scurrying up the sides of structures, there shouldn’t be any shortage of places in New Marais for Cole to test his fastfooted skills in. While a new city, amped powers, and branching moral paths have us psyched to get back behind this fuse-blowing character, a number of other engaging aspects promise to pin us to the edges of our couch cushions. New enemies, including city-leveling swamp creatures, and an absorbing story that’ll see Cole facing his biggest threat yet--the mysterious and menacing Beast--ensure inFamous 2 will be spinning in fans’ PS3s long after its June 7th release date. If it can exceed the excellence of its predecessor and live up to its full potential, all those spandex-clad comic book stars better make some room for Cole MacGrath.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Down ‘Castle’ Comic ABC and Marvel—both owned by Disney—have gotten their synergy on: Marvel will produce a graphic novel based on Derrick Storm, the fictional character created by fictional character Richard Castle on ABC’s primetime dramedy “Castle.” Brian Michael Bendis and Kelly Sue DeConnick write; Lan Media pencils. The 112-page hardcover hits September 28.
‘Key’ Mistake Fox has passed on “Locke and Key,” a television adaptation of the Joe Hill-scripted series about a house with rooms that lead to other worlds. Fox chair Kevin Reilly told gathered press it was a “cool pilot,” but didn’t necessarily fit the scheduling needs of the network. “Key” producers may shop the project to other outlets.

Optimizing NetFlix In May, NetFlix was recognized as the single greatest source of Internet traffic on the Web. The reason? Their streaming service, which funnels thousands of films and television shows to customers for a paltry $8 a month. There’s not much downside, save for the fact that NetFlix’s own proprietary search engine isn’t too comprehensive: you can sort by popularity, search by title or genre, and browse new releases. For more pointed rummaging, try InstantWatcher.com: the service sorts streaming options according to critics’ favorites, RottenTomatoes.com ratings, and user preferences. It’ll even tell you which streaming titles are due to expire soon. (For real masochists, check out their “Worst” laundry list of the lowest-rated titles. “Mummy Maniac” makes its expected appearance near the top.) InstantWatcher.com is free, but a premium membership offers filtered results for children and other subusers for $9.95 a year.

How to get up to speed about Doctor Who in time for this weekend’s mid-season finale If you are a Doctor Who fan, you are no doubt excited about the much-anticipated June 4 mid-season finale of Doctor Who. It will be the first of two parts and will form this year’s mid-season finale. The official synopsis reads: Amy Pond has been kidnapped and the Doctor is raising an army to rescue her as the drama continues. But as he and Rory race across galaxies, calling in long-held debts and solemnly given promises, his enemies are laying a carefully concealed trap. In her cell in Stormcage, River Song sadly acknowledges that the time has come at last – today will mark the Battle of Demons Run and the Doctor’s darkest hour. Both sides will make their sacrifices and River Song must finally reveal her most closely guarded secret to the Doctor. Sound exciting? It is, but not if you haven’t been following along all these years. So while there’s still time to get onboard the time-hopping telephone booth, doing so is not always the easiest thing—Doctor Who is history’s longest running sci-fi show and even a cursory explanation of its involved mythology requires silly-sounding words like “T.A.R.D.I.S.” and “Dalek.” That’s why we’ve put together this handy “Doctor Who In-Doctor-Ination Kit,” a collection of episodes guaranteed to make anyone want to jump into the Whoniverse.
Blink Arguably the greatest Doctor Who episode of all time doesn’t actually feature much of the Doctor. Which is perfect for a newbie. You get a tense sci-fi story full of time-traveling trickery, a taste of current Doctor David Tenant, plus you aren’t walloped with too much mythology.
The Empty Child & The Doctor Dances The modern era of Doctor Who kicked off in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. This creepy two-part story about WWII London and gas-masked wearing zombies was his best, and a good way to soak up more mythology.

City of Death The best introduction to old school Who is this four-part 1979 storyline starring the iconic Tom Baker as the Doctor. You get scripts penned by Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy scribe Douglas Adams, a cameo from John Cleese and an amusing romp involving aliens, time travel and multiple Mona Lisas. If you decide you like these episodes—good news! There are about 200 more to explore!

The Mutant Report
W
hile Uncanny X-Men is not the top selling book in the land anymore like it was for most of the ’80s and ’90s, the mighty Marvel mutant line continues to be a major force in the industry, with X-titles taking up the No. 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 28, and 30 slot amongst the top 30 sellers for the month of April. Going to the top 70, seven additional books join that list. That’s not including Avengers or New Avengers, where the star of the book, Wolverine, is an X-character, nor Secret Avengers, featuring the Beast, nor does it count Secret Warriors, which features at least three mutants. That also does not factor in back-issue sales, of course, and in the back-issue bins, nothing has been more highly sought-after over the last two years than New Mutants #98 ($75), featuring the first appearance of everyone’s favorite Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool. It’s hard to imagine then that 41 years ago, X-Men was cancelled, the characters relegated to the occasional cameo or rare crossover appearance, and that the cancellation came during the one time the book really started to sell well, during the Roy Thomas/Neal Adams run, as due to the way newsstand sales were reported, it took months for Marvel to realize that the book was starting to become popular. Thirty six years ago, though, the series would return, starting with Giant-Size X-Men #1 (which sold in May at CGC 9.4 for $1,400) and continuing
into X-Men #94 (which also sold in May at CGC 9.4, this one for $2,000). Of course, as we mentioned last week in our look at the Bronze Age, if not for a dispute over the original artwork for Superboy #200, the “All-New, All-Different” X-Men would have never existed, with the Black Cat (who fans now know as Storm) and Nightcrawler running around in the 30th Century with the Legion of Super-Heroes, while Colossus and Thunderbird would have remained in Dave Cockrum’s sketchbook of original characters. Cockrum’s run would see many more new characters, such as Phoenix (X-Men #101, $225), Corsair (X-Men #104, $130), the Starjammers (X-Men #107, $85), and Moira McTaggert (X-Men #96, $150). The art alone could not carry the book, though, and for that, Marvel looked to an up-and-coming young writer named Chris Claremont to pilot the book after writer/editor Len Wein got the ball rolling. Claremont would take over with #94 and write the book, along with numerous spinoffs, for the next 17 years, returning to the mutant stable at the end of the 20th Century. While Claremont and Cockrum were generating a ton of excitement, Claremont’s frequent collaborator, John Byrne, would join Claremont on X-Men with #108, after successful stints together on Iron Fist and Marvel TeamUp. Finishing up the Cockrum-started Starjammers

story arc, Byrne’s influence would be immediately felt in X-Men #109 ($100), the introduction of Weapon Alpha, better known by his later name, Vindicator, and, later still, Guardian. Eleven issues later, in X-Men #120, Weapon Alpha would return with the rest of his crew, Alpha Flight.
with X-Factor, collaborating with his wife, former longtime X-editor Louise Simonson (who edited the books under both Simonson and, previously, Jones), beginning with X-Factor #11 ($6), in the midst of the Mutant Massacre.
The two would then pilot the X-Men through the “Dark Phoenix Saga” before running into Alpha Flight once again, in X-Men #139140 ($40 and $45, respectively), to take on Wolverine’s old foe, the Wendigo. Following this two-parter was one of the most memorable storylines in X-Men history, “Days of Future Past,” in Uncanny X-Men #141-142 ($65 and 75, respectively). After Byrne’s departure with Uncanny X-Men #143 ($38), Cockrum would once again return, followed by the amazing, and oftoverlooked, Paul Smith, who took over with Uncanny X-Men #165 ($15). Smith’s artwork would grace nine of the next 10 issues, with the one fill-in by my favorite artist, Walter Simonson, being the issue where Rogue joins the team (Uncanny X-Men #171, $18). Simonson would return to working on mutants years later
Louise Simonson was the writing talent behind the creation of one of the X-titles’ most popular villains, Apocalypse, who made his debut in X-Factor #6 ($16) after a brief cameo in #5 ($3.50). Simonson also created

Nanny (X-Factor #30, $3) and her sidekick, the Orphan-Maker (X-Factor #31, $3), and she was the writer responsible for finally making Warren Worthington III interesting, as she and her artist husband transformed him into Archangel in X-Factor #24 ($16) during the “Fall of the Mutants.” Other mutant creators of note include Bill Sienkiewicz, whose work on New Mutants (#18-31, 35-38) was revolutionary; Rob Liefeld, who, love him or hate him, dramatically transformed the New Mutants into X-Force; Jim Lee, whose X-Men (Vol. II) #1 remains the top-selling single issue of all time; Chris Bachalo, whose work on Generation X is radically different than anything else seen in the Marvel Universe before, during, or after (except, of course, for his later work on Uncanny X-Men); Mark Texeira, who brilliantly captured Wolverine and Sabretooth in their respective titles; and Arthur Adams, who, beyond his debut work on Longshot, was the co-creator of the X-Babies, the artist behind the Wolverine-led “New Fantastic Four,” and his work can currently be found on a (mostly-) bimonthly basis in Ultimate X.

Top 4 Mutant Stories You’ve Never Read
With the various X-titles having dominated the top of the charts for what seems like an eternity, there are not many gems that likely slipped under people’s radar, but we here at Wizard World Digital have a few favorites that might not get the love they richly deserve.
4
Uncanny X-Men #150 ($10) This gem from Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum begins a what-was-then dramatic re-envisioning of Magneto, from purely evil to someone not quite evil but certainly not exactly good. Magneto’s sinking of a Russian nuclear sub occurs here, as does his turnaround into the character we would see in the 200s of this title, as he is shocked and revolted by his own actions when he sees what harm he might have caused to Kitty Pryde. Literally every Magneto story since October 1981 was directly influenced and shaped by this issue and what it began.
3
Longshot #1-6 ($30 for the set) Remember when the X-titles used to be fun? This miniseries certainly embodied that. This brilliant Ann Nocetti script introduced us to Longshot, Ricochet Rita, Mojo, and, most importantly, the amazing artwork of Arthur Adams. Oh, and a young Whilce Portacio inked him. Once a red-hot collectible, this mini could possibly be found in the bargain bins at your nearby Wizard World Comic Con.
2
Uncanny X-Men #190-191 ($4-5 for the set) Getting a little more serious here, we have the debut of Nimrod, guest-appearances by the New Mutants, SpiderMan, and the Avengers, and the menace that is Kulan Gath. Transforming Manhattan Island into something out of Conan, Gath has the heroes at his mercy, until they can remember who they are, what they were, and how to fix what went wrong. Oh, and it has some sweet early John Romita, Jr. artwork too.

1
Uncanny X-Men #153 ($8) Easily my favorite X-Men issue as a child, “Kitty’s Fairy Tale” is Claremont and Cockrum at their best. Retelling the entire “Dark Phoenix Saga” as a fairy tale for a young Illyana Rasputin, Kitty blends myth, magic, and mutants brilliantly, with significant character development occurring underneath the layers of this fairy tale. The interactions of the characters in this issue show more than any other issue why the X-Men are truly a family.
