Our mission statement... Straight from the Top!

’ve been asked A LOT recently which comic book movie is going to be the big winner this summer - Thor, X-Men, Green Lantern or Captain America. My simple answer is that they’re all winners by the mere fact they’ve been made and have received so much attention from movie goers. This is a very special week for us here at Wizard World because of our Philadelphia Comic Con. We think everyone is going to be pretty impressed: so much talent will be in one place at one time, including 20 artist and writers that have worked on the Green Lantern comic books. We’ve been getting high praise for our new digital magazine format, so check out what we’re excited about and let us know what you’re looking forward to. See ya!

Like a stomach-erupting Xenomorph, the Aliens game we’ve been waiting for finally emerges

M

any games have carried the Alien name over the years, but none have fully leveraged the potential of cinema’s most terrifying sci-fi franchise. Sega’s and Gearbox Software’s interactive sequel to James’ Cameron’s Aliens is about to change all that. Our look at Aliens: Colonial Marines at last week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo left our pulses pounding and trigger fingers aching. Taking place between Cameron’s thrill ride and David Fincher’s decidedly darker Alien 3, Colonial Marines borrows more from the former than latter. This means fans can expect plenty of alien-splattering action, explosive set pieces, flashy special effects, and soil-your-skivvies scares. Supporting four-player drop in/drop out co-op, the game’s shooting mechanics seem as solid as any we’ve seen this generation; face-hugger-hating players can plan on peering down the iron sites, lobbing grenades, and blowing stuff up real good behind a high-tech arsenal of military hardware. What separates Colonial Marines from the lock-and-load pack, however, is its dedication to the source material. Authentic settings--Hadley’s Hope, Operations, and the U.S.S. Sulaco-and weapons, like the signature pulse rifle, root players in the franchise’s rich sci-fi world. Of course, the real stars are the familiar creepy crawlies; from face-huggers to Warriors (defined by their elongated skulls and rows of razor-sharp choppers, these are the most recognizable Xenos), all the expected uglies make an appearance, ensuring our spines will be chilled…right before they’re ripped from our backs. While our demo offered just a teasing taste of the title’s enormous potential, it only took one key moment to fully immerse us in the world Ridley Scott created over three decades ago. As the brave band of armed-to-the-teeth marines approached a claustrophobic interior, a distant, menacing “beep” began emanating from the speakers; a soldier raised his motion tracker and the sound--now a more rapid whine-was accompanied by a group of encroaching red dots on the unit’s screen. The tension-ratcheting scene soon gave way to a frenzied display of chaos and carnage that had us wishing we had Ellen Ripley by our sides. If Colonial Marines can sustain this sort of seat-of-your-pants suspense throughout its campaign and multi-player modes, we’ll eagerly sign up as new recruits when it arrives in 2012. — Matt Cabral

ormally wedged in between all of the kid-friendly Pixar fare and comic adaptations at the cineplex during the hot months you’ll find at least one blood-n-guts flick, but not so this summer. And although Hollywood may be pushing horror to the backburner these days for seemingly three straight months of sequels, thankfully, comics has remembered those of us who like a healthy dose of scary mixed into our paneled literature. So if you’re on the prowl for some nightmare juice this summer, you could do far worse than these five fear-inducers… CRIMINAL MACABRE/ THE GOON: WHEN FREAKS COLLIDE (Written by Steve Niles & Eric Powell, Art by Christopher Mitten) Two of the biggest names in horror comics team-up with two of their signature characters in this one-shot that finds Cal MacDonald–the drug-fueled paranormal private dick–on The Goon’s turf of Lonely Street. We can only assume some zombies will feel the joy of a KNIFE IN THE EYE along the way. July 20. SCREAMLAND (Written by Harold Sipe & Christopher Sebela, Art by Lee Leslie) In a world where movie monsters are real and have evolved with the times, the classic characters of yesteryear have been left behind, forced to make ends meet by hitting the convention circuit. And when the release of a monster porn flick threatens their way of life, it’s up to a wolfman and a sci-fi icon to team-up to stop its distribution. June 8.

GODZILLA: GANGSTERS & GOLIATHS (Written by John Layman, Art by Alberto Ponticelli) When Tokyo detective Makoto Sato attempts to take down a Yakuza crime family, he quickly finds himself with a one-way ticket to a deserted island, which just so happens to be the infamous Monster Island! Now he must fight for his life with gangsters on one side and giant, irradiated monsters on the other. June 15. KULT (Written by Jeremy Barlow, Art by Iwan Nazif) Blending equal parts The Matrix and Hellraiser, this adaptation of the popular role-playing game follows parole officer Tomas Zenk, who finds himself sucked into an alternate dimension filled with terrifying monsters based on Gnostic and Kabalistic legends. August 3. WITCH DOCTOR (Written by Brandon Seifert, Art by Lukas Ketner) It takes a lot for Warren Ellis to refer to your book as “mental,” so clearly, this is high praise for Witch Doctor—which tells the horrifying tale of Dr. Vincent Morrow: a mad scientist in search of a cure to the coming apocalypse who stumbles upon a series of disturbing results. Sleeper Hit of E3:

Things

T

ired of using your Kinect to play sports titles and party games? Wishing all that arm-flailing casual fare would spice things up with, say, buckets of spurting blood? Well, look no further than Konami’s Rise of Nightmares, a more mature breed of motion-tracking gaming. A little title on a show floor packed with big-budget blockbusters, this survival horror, Kinect-enabled surprise easily earned our vote for E3‘s under-the-radar hit. As soon as we got our hands (or, no hands?) on Nightmares, we knew we wouldn’t be playing this one at family gatherings. Our demo opened with a dude strapped to a chair, while an axe-wielding psycho hovered over his shoulder. Before we could get a grasp on this Hostel-like scene, the unfortunate captive lost a hand to the hatchet just before its bloody blade was driven into his skull. Sitting across from this grisly scene, witnessing it in a first-person perspective, we were soon rescued from the same fate by a kind gentleman with a German accent. Once standing, we were able to move forward by positioning our right foot in front of us, walk backwards by taking a step back, and turn left and right by shifting our shoulders in the respective directions. While a bit difficult to master, the freedom to move where we wanted was a welcome surprise, as the majority of Kinect titles map movement primarily to the arms. Even cooler than the standard navigation, though, was the ability to kick our feet out and see the action mirrored on-screen. Upon being released from our shackles and into a dungeonlike setting, we were able to use these moves to flee and fight. Of course, we did much more of the latter once we started stumbling upon melee weapons; rusty pipes, serrated blades, scary looking surgical implements, and even chainsaws (yes!) can be equipped. Mimicking the expected motions of these items, as well as a few well placed kicks, we tore through a variety of shambling monsters and gore-spewing menaces with ease. While a number of higher profile titles stole the spotlight at E3, Nightmares was definitely one of the most memorable. There’s just something about tearing through a zombie’s torso with a make believe bone saw that’s hard to shake from your psyche. — Matt Cabral

11 Staros

#

Chris

T

o those who know Top Shelf co-founder and publisher Chris Staros, it’s hard to put a label on the guy—mostly because he’s so damn friendly and humble.

You want to call the guy an icon, because he’s played a major role in bringing independent comics into the mainstream, but he’s quick to give credit to his fellow small press publishers for their contributions as well. You want to call the guy groundbreaking, working with a who’s who list of genrebusting creators who revolutionize comics on a seemingly monthly basis, but he’ll quickly praise the talent that’s always been there. Hell, you’d like to just call the guy a staple of the scene, pointing out the crowds that surround his booth at the countless conventions he attends each year, but he’ll just chalk it up to offering good comics.

Things

we’re psyched

about

What Staros can’t argue with is the fact that he’s one of the most liked and well-respected publishers not only in the small press, but the entire comics industry in general. And while it’s all-too-easy to bend his ear at a convention, it’s a rare treat to sit down and speak with Staros about his background and what he thinks about the ever-expanding indie comics scene. Wizard World recently had the chance to grab Staros in between his hectic schedule to talk about the publisher’s advice for breaking into the industry, his pilgrimages to Graceland, and where he sees indie comics heading into the coming decade.

a musician through and through. I had to retire in ’89 because my hearing had got so bad from blasting all of those years, so I hung up the guitar, got married and settled down, and was ready to chill out for a bit, but I really felt an artistic void at that time. I was working in the software industry; it was good money, but it wasn’t really fulfilling because my head and my heart have always been in the arts.

Wizard World: When did you first get interested in comics? Staros: Well, I never read comics as a kid. My whole life, my greatest two passions have always been music related; I’ve been a huge Elvis Presley fan since I was four years old, and I go to Graceland for a week every summer since the ’80s— it’s my religious holiday every year. I’m very involved in the Elvis community and even privately sponsor some Elvis impersonator contests around the country, just to do my part to help keep the memory of The King alive. And then all throughout the mid to late ’70s and all through the entire ’80s I played in metal bands as a lead guitarist, so I was always

So one day I had some time to kill before I had to pick up my wife from work, and I just happened to walk into a comic shop and just started browsing around. Again, I’d never read comics as a kid because the perception that my parents gave me as a kid was that books with more pictures in them were for kids and books with more words in them were for adults, and I was in such a hurry to grow up I just

focused on reading books like Dune and the Tolkien series and Shogun—books as fat as I could find with no pictures—so I never got caught up in the superhero stuff. So I was killing some time in this comic shop in Atlanta, browsing at the Spider-Man and Iron Man stuff, just some of the cartoons I remembered as a kid, then I asked the staff, “What would an adult read?” and they put Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta in my hands, so I took that graphic novel home and read it and was blown away by it. I never really realized how much potential there was in the comics community until I read that book; to me, comics suffered from this kind of stereotype of being just about superheroes, so when I read V for Vendetta I realized it was fine art and literature combined in really clever ways and it could be that way. Steven Spielberg

T

he release of both “Super 8” (June 10) and the muchanticipated TNT miniseries “Falling Skies” (June 19) are the latest in director/producer Steven Spielberg’s career-long obsession with alien visitors: consider his “Jaws” follow-up, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” the smash hit “E.T.” and 2005’s “War of the Worlds” (starring a not-quiteof-this-Earth Tom Cruise).

Night Skies Columbia Pictures was so high on the success of “Close Encounters” that they wanted a sequel; Spielberg didn’t. Rather than leave it to less experienced hands, he composed a treatment for an indirect follow-up about a farming family under siege by alien invaders. While shooting “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the director realized he was more curious about benevolent visitors. “E.T.” was the result. “Skies” was dropped, though elements of it are said to have inspired “Super 8.”

Things

about

Yet for every galactic-immigrant project Spielberg saw through, there were several others that never made it past the planning stage. Here are three Spielberg alien concepts that never were, but we wish invaded a theater near us:

E.T. 2: Nocturnal Fears Despite being a self-contained story of a boy and his alien, Universal pleaded with Spielberg to consider making their $359 million smash a franchise. He got as far as a nine-page outline—with Elliott and friends kidnapped by angry albino aliens—before realizing he was paving over hallowed ground.

LMNO Spielberg collaborated with Electronic Arts on this intriguing first-person perspective game in 2004: players would try to communicate (and bond) with alien Eve. A climbing budget and concern over the mass appeal of a game where you don’t kill or maim the extraterrestrial led to its cancellation in 2009. — Jake Rossen

an-favorite figures are Mattyrializing this week in droves. Month after month, Mattycollector.com offers fans the opportunity to purchase figures that might not have the kind of widespread appeal necessary to make it at stores like Toys “R” Us or Walmart. Things kicked off in 2008 with Masters of the Universe Classics, a rejuvenated version of He-Man and his fellow Masters as sculpted by the Four Horsemen. From there, things grew as Matty snagged the Ghostbusters license and branched out into other arenas by offering exclusive versions of figures not found in stores. June 15 will see no less than six figures of varying degrees of newness going on sale. Back in Wizard World 1.5 we showed you The Faceless One and Battleground Teela which will be on sale as well as re-releases of Grizzlor and Whiplash in case you missed them the first time around. Meanwhile, Ernie Hudson gets some more love from the Ghostbusters line thanks to a new 6-inch figure of Winston Zeddemore that comes loaded with slime blower and a tripod trap. Finally, John Stewart gets his first entry in the 8-inch Retro Action series of Mego-like figures. Bioshock

H

ow good is this game going to be? We’ve been treated to some different trailers and demos on Bioshock Infinite, but the new footage this year at E3 was unbelievably stunning. The game takes place in a cool little steampunky sky-town called Columbia in the year 1912, where Booker DeWitt (you) is on a mission to rescue Elizabeth (love interest) from her imprisonment in the city. Booker realizes the whole situation is much more complex than he originally thought, and that Elizabeth plays a vital role in the civil war between the Founders (the bourgey ruling class) and the Vox Populi (the resistance). In addition to all this, a terrifying giant mechanical bird-thing is constantly chasing our hero and heroine, trying to recapture Elizabeth and return her to her imprisonment, not to mention annoying the crap out of everyone with its eardrum-bursting screech. The atmosphere of this cloud city is the dead opposite of that of Rapture; Rapture was inherently creepy with its retromental-institution-for-rich-scientist-weirdos feel. Columbia, however, seems to have been very cheery and almost sweet at one time, but the civil war and dystopia feeling have turned

the town into a slightly unsettling place, much like biting into a delicious sandwich and finding a hair in it that is clearly not yours. It appears that Columbia is populated by Cirque du Soleil veterans with balls of steel, because their main mode of transportation features a grappling hook and a series of rails that connects major buildings. This vertigo-inducing travel system is aptly named “The Skyline.” The E3 demo featured this method of movement quite prominently, especially its use during a battle; it appears to be kind of confusing at first, but I have a feeling it will be eventually be embraced by the players. Ken Levine, the creative director of Bioshock Infinite, announced this week that the game will support the Playstation Move. No word yet on whether there will be a multiplayer mode, though Levine has stated they would only proceed forward if it had interesting elements that made it more than just a simple deathmatch. Bioshock Infinite is set to come out in 2012. — Chloe Dykstra

P

erhaps the only thing in the world better than the reallife human Bruce Campbell, which will be on display at this weekend’s Philadelphia Comic Con, is the 12 inches of sheer B-movie masculinity that is the Bruce Campbell action figure. It’s the creation that not only answered Barbie’s dreams, but also likely prompted Ken to look down in smooth-crotched shame as he was kicked to the curb in favor of this Hawaiian shirt-clad stud. The new figurine was created from an actual 3-D scan of Campbell, ensuring complete authenticity of each muscle. It comes complete with miniature angel and demon versions of Campbell that attach to his shoulders via hidden magnets and whisper mediocre advice into his ear. Other film-based accessories include a bottle of Shemps Olde Tyme Whiskey, a Refreshing Lemon Drink bottle, a tiny Campbell collectible toy in a melted package, a miniature version of Campbell’s autobiography If Chins Could Kill, and a big honkin’ gun with price tag still attached. Rub the figure under your armpits, and you’ll even smell like Old Spice! (Assuming you already happen to be wearing Old Spice.) — Wizard World Digital Staff

aming’s most famous heroine is back! We confess: It’s impossible to have too much Lara Croft action in our minds, but this one promises to the most exciting romp yet. Featuring a 21-year-old Lara Croft, this Tomb Raider reboot--due next year from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamic-finally tells Lara Croft’s long-awaited origin story. More a tale of survival and tragedy, rather than another buns-and-guns popcorn adventure, Lara’s latest is gritty, dark, and mature.

The bruises, dirt, scars and scrapes covering the young Lara hint at the hell she’ll endure from Tomb Raider’s relentless enemies and brutal environments. While Lara will have access to traditional weapons, this survivor’s story will focus on the use of makeshift tools, such as her trusty pick axe--perfect for climbing and splitting skulls. Forgoing the exaggerated female proportions of the series’ previous entries, Tomb Raider features a more realistic, athletic Lara Croft. While players might discover the occasional ancient artifact in Tomb Raider, Lara will spend more time trying to stay alive than digging up shiny relics. — Matt Cabral

Game of Thrones

f you’ve been wary of checking out HBO’s “Game of Thrones”—based on the bestselling series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin—because of its complex plotting and political maneuvering, you’ve missed out on some of the most duplicitous behavior since “Melrose Place.” With the much-anticipated first season finale looming on June 19, here’s a sampling of the best double-crosses and despicable deeds. Spoilers ahead!

Out the Window (Ep. 1) 10-year-old Bran Stark, fond of climbing around his castle walls, witnesses an incestuous scene involving the visiting Lannister siblings. After being lured into comfort by Jaime Lannister, the cad pushes him out the window and to an expected death. Sister Act (Ep. 1) In order to gain the support of the vicious Khal Drogo and his army of barbarians, Viserys coerces sister Daenerys to marry Khal, effectively pimping her out for his own gain. Death Bed (Ep. 2) After learning Bran survived the fall, Jaime sends an assassin to stab the little guy while convalescing in bed; Bran’s pet direwolf intervenes. Horse Play (Ep. 5) Faced with the formidable soldier Gregor in a jousting session, Ser Loras Tyrell chooses a horse in heat to ride, distracting Gregor’s male transport: he wins the battle, but antagonizes Gregor, who cuts off his horse’s head for the disappointment. Hearty Appetite (Ep. 6) Challenged by a cabal of crones, Daenerys is forced to eat the heart of a stallion in order to prove her mettle. She nearly heaves, but keeps it down. Joe Rogan would be proud. Gold Medal (Ep. 6) Pushed to the limits of his patience by Viserys, Khal Drogo responds to his command for a crown by pouring volcanic, bubbling gold over Viserys’s head. Tongue-Tied (Ep. 8) After an underling insults his bride Daenerys, Khal Drogo disarms himself and uses his bare hands to rip out the infidel’s tongue. The most unsettling part? You have to figure he’s had practice. — Jake Rossen

4 Convention Season

Summer

Comics are evolving at a break-neck pace, and so are conventions. Don’t get left behind—learn how to convention properly for the new era!

Things

igital downloads, line-wide overhauls and corporate mega-deals—clearly, the comic industry has been evolving at a seemingly minute-by-minute pace over the past few years.

D

Likewise, comic conventions have come a long way since Phil Seuling’s first Comic Art Convention back in 1974. Whereas a little less than a decade ago you could plop down a small entry fee and spend a weekend rifling through quarter bins or maybe getting an autograph, these days, it’s all about the art of the deal, networking, or getting in on the groundfloor of a major announcement or tech advancement. In other words, much like the comic book industry, it’s now a business, and the place to take care of business.

Long gone are the days of the spinner racks at the 7-11; now “there’s an app for that.” Wanna know what comic your favorite creator’s working on next? Well, it’s probably a comic-based major summer blockbuster or first-person shooter. Meanwhile, good luck trying to break into the biz the old fashioned way— there’s literally thousands of folks self-publishing on the web or through fundraising websites like Kickstarter (in other words, it’s a crowded, talented field—best of luck to ya!).

Sure, conventions are still the go-to spot to fill in the missing issues of your collection and a great place to meet your favorite creators, but these days, if you really want to make it in the comic biz, you have to hit the convention circuit like a pro. It may sound overwhelming, but it can be a lot of fun, and who knows, you just might make a career out of a fun weekend among your fellow nerds. Just in time for the Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con this weekend, here’re a few tips… More... — Casey Seijas

3 Father’s Day!

#

Give thanks to your pops this Father’s Day for not being like these horrible comic book dads

15

Things

L

et’s face it—Dads get a bad rap sometimes. Sure, they crack groan-inducing jokes at inappropriate times, leave the bathroom smelling like someone dumped a bucket of Sex Panther on the floor, and never miss an opportunity to tell you how much better music, sports, TV, and so on was back in their day, but cut ’em some slack—at the end of the day, they usually mean well and will stand behind you through thick and thin. And hey, things could be worse—a lot worse. After all, has your dad ever locked you in a spacecraft and blasted you lightyears into the galaxy? Or have they ever trained you from birth to be the ultimate killing machine (which may sound cool in theory, but we can only assume that would become a drag after a while)? Probably not. So this Father’s Day, take a moment to thank your dad for being an upright citizen and not like any of these all-time worst dads in comics… JOR-EL: Dads will normally be the first to praise their rational decisionmaking skills, but maybe ol’ Jor-El here shoulda thought things through with li’l Kal. No, we’re not arguing the fact that he saved his son from certain doom on the planet Krypton; we’re saying he could’ve picked a better planet than Earth, where he’d have to spend every day getting his ass kicked by other-worldly monsters just to save a bunch of ungrateful humans. Gee, thanks, dad… OMNI-MAN: “Hey son, wouldja like some really cool superpowers?” “Sure, Dad, that sounds great!” “Oh, here’s the catch—down the road, once you get used to them, I’m gonna come back and beat the holy hell out of you, then take off with my mantis-lady girlfriend.” Yup, ol’ Omni-Man—father of Mark Grayson (a.k.a. Invincible)—ain’t gonna win very many “Father of the Year” awards, but one thing’s for sure: that is one sweet ’stache! DAVID CAIN: Most dads will find a common hobby with their kids during their formative years—teaching them a sport, collecting comics, playing video games, and so on—but teaching your adopted daughter how to be the world’s most lethal assassin would probably be frowned upon by Child Services. Fortunately for Cassandra Cain (the aforementioned daughter), Batman eventually stepped in and made her the new Batgirl so she could, um…continue kicking thug ass to the point of unconsciousness? Yeah, that’s…better?

MAGNETO: Some of us have dads who have a tendency to spout off un-PC things, or will look for any opportunity to tell you why Sarah Palin would make an outstanding president. Sure, well that’s pretty bad, but imagine if your dad wouldn’t stop running his mouth about mutant rights, only to back it up with the ability to wreck all kinds of shop thanks to his ability to control any and all types of metals. Yeah, now those reactionary bumper stickers all over the minivan don’t seem so bad, do they? NORMAN OSBORN: Ol’ Norm here has more than enough excuses as to why he should’ve reconsidered reproducing—after all, dude was abused by his father, was haunted by nightmarish images of a green goblin growing up, and no one— no one—should take a chance of passing on that hair to their son (or worse, daughter). But despite his son Harry’s best efforts of gaining his father’s affections—even going into the family business of Goblin-themed supervillainy—nothing was gonna take away his dad’s obsession with a skinny teenage boy who ran around town in blue-and-red spandex. That’s just flat-out sad…and really creepy. — Casey Seijas

he annual Electronic Entertainment Expo is notorious for its surprise announcements, shocking reveals, and teasing tastes of things to come. This sensationalistic element has become so ingrained in the fabric of the show that the real shocker would be if the nearly week-long event concluded with no surprises at all. So, while we’ve come to totally expect these spectacular announcements--usually accompanied by scantily clad models, celebrities, special effects, or some combination thereof--there’s still a few that manage to sting our senses. Here are nine things--in no particular order--from this year’s show that struck childhood-like awe in our videogame-loving hearts.

Wii U Nintendo’s follow-up to the Wii is an amazing, potential-packed piece of tech that’s aiming to appeal to casual and hardcore gamers alike. While we won’t see it until 2012, its innovative new experiences and immersion-pushing features promise to redefine gaming all over again.

Brothers in Arms: Furious Four Don’t let the Brothers in Arms moniker fool you; this spin-off to the WWII series is essentially the “Inglourious Basterds” game we never got. Over-the-top action, personality-packed characters, and increasingly inventive ways to kill Nazis (explosive bear-traps, anyone?) puts this one dead-center on our radar.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures This fun-for-the-whole-family title puts the world’s most popular theme park in your living room. From greeting characters on Main Street, to dueling with Captain Hook on Peter Pan’s Flight, this motion-controlled adventure is like a virtual Disneyland vacation without the high prices and long lines.

PSVita While many snickered at the name, there’s no denying that everyone will want one of these super-slick devices when it arrives later this year. Utilizing two analog sticks, back and front touch controls, a stunning widescreen, and console-quality visuals, Sony’s sexy new handheld could make the 3DS and iPhone break a sweat.

Batman: Arkham City While we knew plenty about this blockbuster-to-be going into E3, it wasn’t until we hit the show floor that the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum let us get our paws on some Catwoman gameplay. Stylish stealth skills, sexy cat suit, show-stealing banter with Batman--need we say more?

Kinect: Star Wars Ever since purchasing Microsoft’s controller-free Kinect, all we’ve really wanted to do is swing invisible lightsabers and Forcechoke Stormtroopers in our living rooms. With Star Wars Kinect, those wishes have officially been fulfilled. Oh, and it lets players mock Force-push, too!

Overstrike Ratchet and Clank and Resistance developer, Insomniac Games, only made games for Sony consoles…until now. Overstrike, an espionage action-adventure brimming with charming characters, hightech gadgetry, and inventive weaponry looks like the studio’s next must-have hit--and it’s multi-platform!

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Because the thievius raccoonus’ handlers, Sucker Punch, have been busy making Cole MacGrath a badass in the inFamous series, we’d given up hope on seeing a new Sly Cooper game. Thanks to Sanzaru games-developer behind the recently released Sly Collection--we can look forward to thieving once again as the anthropomorphic bandit.

BloodRayne Betrayal We’d heard the sexy vampire slayer would make her return at this year’s show, but we hadn’t expected her to look so damn good. Complemented by beautiful hand-drawn visuals and a whopping 4000 frames of animation, Rayne is easy on the eyes even when she’s sucking the life out of some poor sap. — Matt Cabral

See how Hollywood gave the green light to the new movie, get the 411 on this fall’s Green Lantern animated series, take the plunge on the 15-story high GL roller coaster, and more!

H

al Jordan, our favorite ring-wielding non-Hobbit, shows up on the big screen in a couple of days, and we can sense something different with this one. Let’s face it: Warner Bros. hasn’t had the greatest batch of films as of late with the exception of their new Batman franchise. However we’re banking that GL will set a new standard for the summer blockbuster and the comics to movie genre! Ever since the first trailer debuted at the beginning of the year with its jaw-dropping special effects, an amazing array of characters from Oa, and a hell of a solid cast— we’ve waited in anticipation and counted down the days until the film’s release!

That’s why we landed Green Lantern at number one this week! We dived deep into our minds archives to bring you the best Green Lantern-related content—just to prepare you for the film. We got everything from an inside look to the new upcoming animated DVD, to exactly how this character came to life from the comic book pages to the big screen! We even did a retrospective on all of the actors who’ve voiced Hal Jordan before Ryan Reynolds wore the CGI mask! So put on your GL ring (we know you have one) and go “Green” at least until Cap’s red, white, and blue rolls around in July…

Lighting the ‘Lantern’

The long, strange trip of DC’s secret Hollywood weapon

I

t doesn’t take a lot of effort to understand why Batman and Superman were DC’s first and most frequent properties to be adapted into live-action: Batman was a mere mortal, after all, and Superman could be rendered convincingly invincible busting through cardboard doors. Green Lantern had to be happy with animation. As the wielder of the power ring—which casts into reality anything the wearer can imagine—his powers were hardly demonstrable in front of cameras. Two appearances in 1979’s cheese-whiz fest “Legends of the Superheroes,” featuring an overweight and aging Adam West, and an 1997 “Justice League” pilot for CBS that was unceremoniously dumped in a studio vault, made little use of his powers.

loves: amalgamation. It could be the DC Universe meets “Star Wars.” With the arrival of “Green Lantern,” the studio is betting $150 million that Jordan’s big screen debut is long overdue. Starring Ryan Reynolds, the film planet-hops, enlists most of the Green Lantern Corps, and uses a scale that makes “Batman Begins” look like a Miramax film in comparison. It’s also far from the Lantern’s first attempt to take flight.

In 1997, Warner approached director Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) to pen a screenplay that would blend the Lantern’s mythology with Smith’s trademark wit. Smith passed, but Warner didn’t abandon the comedy element. Instead, they strengthened Too bad, fans sighed: with the right it, toying with Jack Black (“School of budget and creative team, the story of Rock”) as the lead. While DC appeared Hal Jordan, Oa, and intergalactic conflict to be less enthused about the project— had all the makings of what Hollywood described as a nod to “The Mask”— Warner plowed ahead.

Devoted fans hoping for a serious take and having long since ODed on snarky superhero films balked; duly chastised, Warner looked to Zack Snyder, but not before inserting Lantern John Stewart in director George Miller’s “Justice League” film project. When that approach fizzled—too expensive— writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim were brought in to resurrect the solo movie; Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) signed to direct. Reynolds was not yet in the picture. Warner was alleged to have tested both Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake for the lead; Ryan Gosling was a late choice. When Reynolds did sign on, it pushed back his promised “Deadpool” feature to a date TBD. Things came full circle once a teaser trailer was released in the spring that was heavy on Reynolds’ one-liners. Still, Reynolds seems to be taking the assignment seriously, if even Hal Jordan isn’t. “Lantern” opens June 17.

‘Green’ Screen

The Lantern Gets Animated

I

t’s clear Warner Bros. is counting on summer’s “Green Lantern” to ignite new interest in the character: just in time for the movie’s fall DVD release comes the debuting season of “Green Lantern: The Animated Series,” a 26-episode computeranimated half-hour that details Hal Jordan’s galactic crusade against the evil Red Lantern Corps.

Longtime DC animated producer Bruce Timm has said that the series isn’t likely to have any direct continuity with the film; nor is Earth expected to play a major role. Hal and the Corps have their hands full in Guardian Space. “Lantern” is set to have a sneak preview episode on Cartoon Network in November, with regular airdates coming in 2012.

Take the Plunge on GL’s New Roller Coaster

O

n the heels of “Batman: the Ride” and “Superman: the Puking” (subtitle not official) comes “Green Lantern: Stand Up to Your Fear,” a 15-story high roller coaster at Six Flags in Jackson, New Jersey: riders climb 153 feet before taking a plunge at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour.

All while standing up. “Lantern” starts off with a yellow track—to signal the threat of the Parallax, Lantern’s nemesis—and then turns green to hint that the hero will eventually prove victorious. A second, sit-down Lantern-inspired coaster is scheduled to open in mid June at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California: that park will reconfigure its layout to create a DC-themed area including rides based on Superman and Wonder Woman.

book IQ. He asked me, “Who created Green Lantern?” I responded, “Bill Finger.” He continued to talk to me. While so many like to point to Martin Nodell as the creator of Green Lantern, the reality is that he created the concept, with a very loose idea and a rough sketch. The actual character, his original oath (referenced in the title to this article), his powers, and just about everything we associate with Alan Scott comes from Bill Finger. Finger had done something similar a year earlier with Bob Kane’s drawing of some dude in a bat costume.

Y

ears ago, before I was the Price Guide guru for Wizard World Digital, I owned a comic shop for three years. During that time, I had the pleasure of meeting many talented writers and artists from the Golden and Silver Ages of comic books. I learned about these eras from these creators, but only one of

Nodell’s original idea was an obvious play off of Aladdin and his magical lamp. In fact, the character’s original name was to be Alan Ladd before Finger changed it. What one saw in All-American Comics #16 ($80,000) was far more than just an Aladdin spinoff. The character continued to star in All-American from them would actually test me that point on, running until #102, while also gaining on that knowledge. his own title, appearing regularly in All-Star Comics That happened to be Julius “Julie” Schwartz, the genius as a member of the Justice behind the Silver Age revivals Society of America (which formed in All-Star Comics at DC Comics. I was warned #3 {$75,000}), and in every ahead of time that Julie issue of Comic Cavalcade grilled people when he first as well (that is until the meets them to see if they funny animals bumped were worth his time. And he Green Lantern and all other was ready to test my comic superheroes in #30).

As quickly as he shot to the top, Green Lantern would come crashing down. How far down? The last issue of his series, #38 ($4,000), does not even feature him on the cover, but instead spotlights Streak the Wonder Dog. A decade later, Julie Schwartz would bring in John Broome and Gil Kane to breathe new life into the character, which they would in Showcase #22 ($50,000). They introduced the world to a dashing test pilot, Hal Jordan. Hal was given the ring by a dying alien named Abin Sur and was welcomed into the ranks of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps. Quickly moving over to his own series after a three-issue trial in Showcase, we met his “masters,” the blueskinned Guardians of the Universe, in Green Lantern, Vol. II, #1 ($16,730), followed shortly by introductions to fellow Corpsmen Tomar-Re (#6, $1,000) and of course, Sinestro (#7, $5,000). Just like Peter Parker, the ones Hal loved the most tried to kill him. Hal’s beloved Carol Ferris would turn into the evil Star Sapphire in Green Lantern #21 ($800). Unlike Peter Parker, however Hal Jordan was not blessed with a great rogues gallery. Other than Sinestro, Star Sapphire, and Hector Hammond (who debuted in Green Lantern #5 {$1,200}),

Hal had no credible threats. Instead he faced losers like the Tattooed Man (Green Lantern #23, $285), the Shark (Green Lantern #24, $250), and Evil Star (Green Lantern #37, $170). It was this lack of decent villains and a general lack of direction, which lead to a reboot of sorts for the character. Writer Denny O’Neil and artist Neal Adams attempted to make the character relevant to a

changing world, bringing in co-star Green Arrow to help in Green Lantern #76. This would not be enough to stave off Green Lantern’s greatest threat: cancellation! The series ended in #89. Rather than fading into oblivion, though, the Green Lantern/Green Arrow stories continued in The Flash, beginning with #217 ($140). Green Lantern returned,

again, in 1976, but faced issues with direction. He would be exiled into space (#151, $4), returned home from space (#172, $6), quit shortly thereafter (#181, $10), was replaced by an African-American ex-Marine named John Stewart (#182, $12), be replaced again by a former teacher turned into a combination of Rambo and Ron Headrest named Guy Gardner (#195, $12), and then helped relocate a good chunk of the Green Lantern Corps to Earth (#200, $8). His series was devoted to the entire Corps for two years before they decided get rid of Sinestro once and for all (Green Lantern Corps, Vol. I, #222, $6). Of course that lead to Oa blowing up as a result (we still don’t know why). Then, his own series blew up, and GL appeared only in Action Comics Weekly for the following year. Cancelled three times already, Green Lantern was given another shot in Emerald Dawn and

eventually returned to his own series. There, he would grow grey temples similar to Reed Richards and then his hometown was turned into a crater (Green Lantern, Vol. III, #46, $6). But hey, he was cool with that at first! He spent the next issue hanging out with his good buddy, Oliver Queen ($12). Of course, the issue after (#48, $12), he totally went off the deep end and killed everyone he used to work with. Kyle Rayner would come along with Green Lantern, Vol. III, #50 ($5), and he breathed new life into the GL concept. This much-beloved character though would be relegated to the sidelines when everyone learned Hal was a-okay, and it was a giant, yellow bug-thing that killed all those people. Oops. And that brings us to where we are today, with Hal Jordan being the go-to guy for all things Green… — Mark Allen Haverty

Driq (Green Lantern Corps, Volume I, #217, $8) The ring was supposed to protect the ring bearer throughout their life, even while unconscious, but Driq’s ring went a step further, keeping his rotting corpse an active member of the Corps—making him the official Corps corpse. Thank you! I’ll be here all week. Please tip your waitress.

2

Rond Vidar (Adventure Comics #349, $120) The Green Lantern Corps was not confined to our century of course, and Rond Vidar (pronounced exactly how you think it is) bravely served the Corps in the 30th and 31st century, protecting Sector 2814 despite a ban on Green Lanterns near Earth. Why the ban? Well, Universo, had left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth when he tried to conquer the world. Oh, and he’s Rond’s father too!

1

Kilowog (Green Lantern Corps, Volume I, #201, $12) The drill sergeant of the Green Lantern Corps, Kilowog might easily be one of the more popular GLs within the DC Universe. Kilowog also served briefly as the handyman and go-to tech guy for the Justice League International. Outside of comics Kilowog has also popped up in the Cartoon Network’s Justice League, thrice as many times as Hal Jordan did, and Brave and the Bold cartoons, as well as in an episode of Duck Dodgers. So what does he have to do to get his own series? This guy needs a better agent! — Mark Allen Haverty
