CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Star MICHAEL ROOKER Talks Movies, Comic Cons

M

any Wizard World fans probably think first of “The Walking Dead” when they see the outsized personality of Michael Rooker holding court at his celebrity booth, the line of well-wishers and autograph seekers spilling into the aisle. But with more than 100 television and film roles to his credit, notably Cliffhanger and Henry, and the Marvel feature Guardians of the Galaxy hitting the big screen this summer, Rooker has shown that his resume is quite diverse. Rooker recently took a few minutes to talk to Wizard World about his famous roles, how filming went for Guardians and how he prepared for the role of Yondu.

WIZARD WORLD: You are one of the most popular guests at Wizard World shows. What do you like about attending the events? MICHAEL ROOKER: The big answer, of course, is meeting all the fans that come out. First off, some have made a tremendous effort to get to these events. Meeting the fans is just the most interesting aspect of these shows. WW: Besides ‘The Walking Dead,’ which roles do fans most want to talk to you about? MR: It’s by far ‘The Walking Dead,’ but now ‘Guardians of the

Galaxy,’ because it is coming out this summer, is becoming more of a topic people are asking about. Also, a lot of people from the world of gaming ask about ‘Black Ops’ and ‘Black Ops 2.’

different from most; all actors have their own persoal way of getting ready, preparing, getting into the role, it’s all up to the individual. I really truly enjoyed that whole process.

WW: What did you enjoy about filming ‘Guardians?’ MR: I have discovered that it’s actually OK to be sitting in the makeup chair for hours (laughs). I never used makeup in my regular acting, hardly ever used any whatsoever, unless it was a scar or prosthetic work. But for Guardians it was five to six hours from arriving to being set ready, including makeup and wardrobe. I found that the whole process of preparing what you look like and makeup has been a very intersting thing for me. I got to do my internal prep work, getting myself ready while all the make up and wardrobe was being applied. Once we were ready for the camera, I stayed prepared throughout the day.

WW: Yondu is a bow hunter. How is your real-life marksmanship? MR: Dude, I made 50 yard hits with my bow. And, well, I made a little wager with my buddy at the range, there’s a mockup version of a grissly 150 yard away, and he said there’s no way I could hit it, but I knew I would hit it square. I asked what he wanted to wager, because I didn’t want to take his money, so we wagered a double tall mocha latte. First shot, bam! One hundred fifty yard away with a Mathews bow. It’s a simple short bow.

WW: Was there a particular challenge in the role of Yondu? Did you review some of the comics? Is it a copy of that character or more of yourself? MR: Definitely more of myself to it, because it was written that way. James Gunn wrote the role with me in mind: my aggressiveness, my humor is all over the role. So I did some research in regard to Yondu, but I was informed that I shouldn’t do too much, because we didn’t stay completely with the status quo with what Yondu is about in the comics. We departed a bit, and I think everyone is anxious to see how this is going to come out. WW: How was the preparation different than for other roles? MR: My preparation is a little

it. I was laughing so hard, it was really fun to watch. It’s so different from what we did on ‘The Walking Dead’ in terms of what we did was so serious, based in reality. It was a lot of fun to see zombies done in a campy way. I had just come from England – six months doing Guardian – so I had made a lot of friends there. So it was even funnier for me then.

WW: So who is a better marksman, you or Jennifer Lawrence? MR: Me, for sure (laughs). It’s two different types of bows. I’m pretty good with the natural bow, recure longbows. I’m pretty good at hitting targets in general. When I see the target I can hit it. Slingshots, shooting pistols, rifles. Anything with a target I like. WW: What is it about the 2012 spoof “Cockneys versus Zombies” that you find so appealing? MR: It was so silly and stupid I loved

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

LIVE FEARLESSLY I

n the year 2013, I told myself and my fans to challenge ourselves by living fearlessly every day. Now in 2014, I expect nothing different. Living fearlessly is not something that is an option, it’s a way of life. Fears are nothing but restrictions, they stop us from fulfilling the most out of life. I am not afraid of much, but I made it my goal in 2013 to get conquer some of my fears. How could I tell my fans to live fearlessly, if I did not face my own fears? I feared clowns and hot air balloons, so naturally, I dressed up as a clown and jumped out of a hot air balloon. It was scary and I was nervous but they don’t call me Fearless Frank for nothing. I will overcome each and every one of my fears along with all of you. In order to be fearless and succeed in life, the first fear to overcome is the fear of failure, which is something we all are afraid of. Do not be afraid to fail, everyone has failed at something. Even if you fail once, twice, three times or more, the way to conquer that fear is to try and try again. Tell yourself “I CAN” every day and after every try because if

WWW.WIZARDWORLD.COM | SYMBOL: WIZD

you keep your mind positive and focused you will succeed. Do not let failure defeat you, if you do, you will never know what could have been or what can be. Live fearlessly, do not tap out, and you will succeed. I encourage everyone to write down any of your fears, whether it be afraid of speaking to someone you like, fear of flying, fear of going after that position you want, and face them head-on. Once a person confronts their fears, those limitations stop being an obstacle and life becomes limitless. No fear is too small or too big, you have to work at overcoming them. You have to have the courage to take risks and go out of your comfort zone. This New Year is the perfect opportunity to start fresh and take the necessary steps to replace fear with greatness. We CAN reach all our goals, our dreams, and anything we put our minds to. Let’s take 2014 and make it our year. ––– Jason David Frank

COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT

Q&A

with

ERIC

“THE SMOKE” MORAN

WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED AS A COSPLAYER AT WIZARD WORLD? I’ve learned to inspire many people to be comfortable and not be intimidated to cosplay regardless of size, color, shape, or gender. While participating in cosplay panels at Wizard World, I am able to reach out and answer question for people that want to cosplay.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST LABOR INTENSIVE COSTUME? The biggest cosplay challenge was my Optimus Prime costume. My friend, Mike, helped me put it together and it was a five to six month project.

CHECK OUT THE MAKING OF PRIME: http://youtu.be/peEO6K_TmzU

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO COSPLAYERS OF ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE? My advice to all cosplayers, is that there is no such thing as “Elite Cosplayers.” It’s just cosplay! Just help inspire others who want to break into cosplay and have fun.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST MEMORY AT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I’ve had many great moments at Wizard World over the years, but the one that stood out for me was hosting the Wizard World Costume Contest last year for the first time at Wizard World Ohio. From the crowd to the contestants, to the judges it was incredible! It was like being in a dream and not wanting to wake up.

RECENTLY, YOU WERE ANNOUNCED AS THE ALTER EGO FOR DC COMIC’S FREIGHT TRAIN! TELL US HOW PUMPED YOU ARE AND WHAT THAT MEANS FOR YOUR GOING FORWARD. When Dan Didio from DC Comics presented me with the honor of becoming Freight Train, it will be a moment of my life that I will never forget. Being Freight Train gives me the chance to show kids a real superhero. For me, it brings a whole new level of cosplaying.

COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT

Q&A with IVY DOOMKITTY ON COSPLAYING: HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET STARTED AS A COSPLAYER? Well, it started a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away. I went to my first comic book convention about 9 years ago. Oddly enough, it was Wizard World LA. I saw people running around in costume and loved the idea of expressing your fandom through costuming and emulating the character. It was something that I wanted to do, but felt that I would get called names, laughed and ridiculed, therefore I chose not to proceed. This mentality continued for years, deciding to do a costume before a con, only to let my insecurities and thoughts of what others would think affect me, and then choose not to cosplay. It wasn’t until 4 years ago that comic book artists/writer, Frank Cho, asked me to model for his live art panel... in costume. It was a huge deal for me and with the help of a friend, I made the costume. It was fun and I loved modeling, but I didn’t quite count it as cosplay. I did this for the next 2 years as well, growing a little bolder with each modeling session at the con, but still quite afraid to walk a convention floor in costume. It wasn’t until SDCC 2012 that I decided to just do it and walk the floor in costume. I had emailed Frank about cosplaying as his Liberty Meadows Brandy dressed as a Star Trek TOS red shirt print that he was doing for the con and he said to go for it. With 2 days left before the con, I made the costume. It was an absolute blast walking the con floor. What I loved was the conversations about TOS that I was able to have with anyone that stopped me. I felt that I was finally able to emulate a character and express my fandom. After that I dove in and went crazy on costume making.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE INSECURITIES ABOUT THEIR BODY IMAGE FOR COSPLAYING AND IN GENERAL? Don’t believe for one second that you are the wrong “body type” for a character. Artists draw different versions of characters all the time. Look at artists like Frank Cho and J. Scott Campbell. Both draw their women very differently, but they are nonetheless beautiful in every way. Cosplay is also an expression of art. You’re showing your love for a character and there is nothing wrong with celebrating that, regardless of your size/shape/etc. There will be people that are negative and sometimes try to knock you down, but at the end of the day the important thing is that you had had fun and are happy with yourself. Also remember: For every one negative comment that you see, there are 20+ positive ones. Why let the negative ones affect your life and dictate what you do and don’t do. Stick with the positive and you will be happier.

ON WIZARD WORLD: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS ABOUT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I love the feeling being amongst family when I go to a Wizard World show. I very much enjoy how they make cosplay a MAJOR part of their convention, promoting the art and now including Cosplay Circuit. I like how there is a perfect balance between media guests, comic book artists/ writers, and cosplayers. One thing that I love that I noticed no other con does, is greet every person that walks through the door in the morning and thanks them for coming to Wizard World. I like how they show appreciation for the attendees of the con.

TV PERSONALITY SPOTLIGHT WW: Do you cosplay, and as what? AS: I am an authentic but low-maintenance

cosplayer. I’ve got great Indiana Jones, Zombie Tony Stark and Shaun (from “Shaun of the Dead”) costumes that I rotate.

WW: What has been your favorite cosplay at a Wizard World convention?

AS: At Wizard World Philadelphia, a group

of cosplayers were dressed as Batman characters from the 1960s Adam West show. They were great, but the experience was only made better when they all crammed into an amazing TARDIS replica and poked their heads out of the door.

WW: Do you have a favorite nerd debate you like to get into?

AS: I will debate to no end that “Indiana

Jones and the Temple of Doom” is grossly underrated, as is “Dawn of the Dead.”

TV PERSONALITY SPOTLIGHT WITH

AARON SAGERS

A

aron Sagers is a TV personality, entertainment journalist and author. He also really, really loves zombies, the paranormal, Doctor Who, Star Wars and a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. For more than a decade, Aaron has been a “professional nerd” interviewing some of the coolest names in geek culture and covering every aspect of the nerd world. The New York City resident has gained a following as host/co-executive producer of Travel Channel’s “Paranormal Paparazzi,” an entertainment/lifestyle news show revolving around the horror and supernatural genres. His credentials also include MTV, CNN, The Huffington Post, BBC and recently hosted an online show for the premiere of Syfy’s “Being Human.” He is author of “The Paranormal Pop Culture Collection: Rambling and Shambling Through The Entertainment of the Unexplained” and is founder of the blog ParanormalPopCulture.com. And since 2013, he’s been one of Wizard World’s resident hosts, and has moderated for Norman Reedus, Zachary Quinto, Robert Rodriguez, Michael Shannon and more.

WIZARD WORLD: Can you share some recent nerd milestones? AARON SAGERS: My job has led to some awesome adventures lately. I dressed up as Robin

and rode with Batman in one of Adam West’s Batmobiles through Time Square; I went to London to film an Simon Pegg and ended up going on a pub crawl of the bars from “The World’s End”; I was in Transylvania with Bram Stoker’s descendant to film a project. Then I got to interview five Doctors from “Doctor Who,” including Tom Baker, which led to me breaking the news story about his involvement in the 50th Anniversary Special!

WW: What’s next for you? AS: I’ll also be speaking at the International

UFO Congress in Arizona, which is huge honor. Additionally, I’ll be working on a few TV projects I can’t yet reveal but I am ecstatic about those.

WW: How can fans find you? AS: Hit me up on Twitter @AaronSagers or at ParanormalPopCulture.com!

WW: Who’s your favorite Doctor? AS: I grew up watching Tom Baker with my

dad on PBS, and I still love the scarfed one. But Matt Smith is a very close second.

WW: Luke or Han? AS: As a kid, Luke. But as you get older, you

realize you want to be the cool scoundrel, so then it was Han.

WW: Ewoks or Jar Jar? AS: Ewoks. I loved them when I was a kid. Plus they had the “Yub Nub” song. AND they were maneaters. Trust me.

WW: What is your favorite Wizard World experience? AS: Every Wizard World I attend is both unique but also familiar. I walk away with so many

stories, but my favorite to date was from Nashville. As I was walking from a panel back to the convention floor, I saw a cosplayer dressed as Iron Man. A little girl ran up and gave him a huge hug. It was just so cool and reminded me how much of an impact this world has on people.

WW: Who has been your favorite celebrity to meet and moderate for at a Wizard World? AS: Introducing Bruce Campbell was a real treat for me because he was one of my first

celebrity interviews when I became a journalist. A lot of time has passed since then but now that I live the life of a professional nerd, it feels kind of like full circle for me. I also always dig speaking to Wil Wheaton. His insights on geek culture are really dead-on, and he’s had a very positive impact on the community.

While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC’s acclaimed series, The Walking Dead. Moreover, Rooker’s star continues to rise as with Marvel’s next big super hero team, Guardians of the Galaxy. Being casted as the game hunter, Yondu Udonta of the Zatoan tribe, Rooker is sure to bring his signature flair to the role and mark his stamp onto the Marvel Universe.
