WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW SHOW HOURS:
LOCATION:
FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2014.......................3PM – 8PM
SACRAMENTO CONVENTION CENTER 1400 J STREET SACRAMENTO, CA 95814
SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2014................10AM – 7PM SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2014....................10AM – 5PM HOW DOES THIS “CONVENTION” THING WORK? Exhibitors display their products and demonstrate services to inform and entertain the show guests; many publishers will also offer products for purchase. Comic book and collectable retailers offer their merchandise for purchase. You can find everything new from comic back issues, original art, statues and busts, toys, games, DVDs and much more. If you imagine it, someone’s got it for sale. Media guests and comic professionals come out to meet the public, put their artwork on display, sell prints, sketches, autographs or other collectables and interact with the fans. You can meet them in person in their respective celebrity and artist areas.
HOW DO I FIND ARTISTS, VENDORS CELEBS…RESTROOMS? No GPS required – we’ve got a map of the show floor available in this program guide. The map will list where the exhibitor, retailer, artist and celebrity areas are located and yes…even bathrooms! You can even download our Wizard Cons App for FREE for iOS and Android phones. The App is complete with floor maps.
WHAT’S THIS WRISTBAND SYSTEM ALL ABOUT? It’s all about security. Make sure you check in at ticket registration and you will receive a wristband for access to the show. You’ll need it to come and go throughout the weekend, because the venue’s security personnel won’t admit you in without it.
WHERE IS THE FIRST AID? Please be careful, but if you do get hurt, contact a Wizard World staff member at the registration booths or information booths and they can direct you to the First Ad station.
CAN I TAKE PICTURES AND/OR VIDEOS? You are welcome to take pictures and videos at our guests’ discretion; however, please note that all photography and recording is prohibited during the panels and screenings in the programming rooms. Also, please note that guests may or may not pose for photographs with fans. Guests have a right to their privacy and if they ask not to have their picture taken, please respect their wishes.
WILL I BE ON CAMERA? By entering the convention center, you consent to be photographed, filmed and/or otherwise recorded by Wizard World to use your likeness for promotional purposes and waive all rights to any claims for payment of royalties in connection with any exhibition, televising, or other publication of material.
WILL GUESTS SIGN AUTOGRAPHS? Wizard World Comic Con will feature a number of guests that will sign autographs in the Celebrity Area. Guests will sign most of your items (officially licensed DVDs, comics, toys, and other collectibles) at their discretion. Please note that most guests charge for autographs and guests may or may not pose for photographs with fans.
HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR FUN! • Be cool and polite to everyone, other show guests, exhibitors, comic pros, media celebs, volunteers, staff, etc. • Get involved! Check out the programming, rap about comics with other fans, rock your costumes proudly, browse the retailers to look for the must-have collectible and try a little bit of everything to get the full Comic Con experience!
• Be prepared. Make sure you’ve got a sketchbook if there’s an artists you want to hit up, bring extra cash if you want to have a big shopping day, wear comfortable shoes, ‘cuz you’ll be on your feet all day, and make sure you’ve got the essentials like water, gum, lip balm, whatever meds you need and especially hand sanitizers – it’s the best way to avoid that “convention cough” during cold and flu season!
LOST AND FOUND? Lost and found will be at the Registration Booths. If you find anything left behind be fellow convention goers, please hand it into a Wizard world staff member at ticket registration.
ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY: • Wizard World is committed to providing a safe and fun experience for all attendees, exhibitors, guests and staff. As such, all are entitled to respectful treatment at Wizard World conventions and associated events. Wizard World will not tolerate inappropriate behavior of any kind, including but not limited to harassment because of age, disability, marital status, race or color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity. • Any threatening behavior with the intent to harass, annoy, alarm, abuse, torment or embarrass another is unacceptable and grounds for removal from the convention without refund. If unacceptable behavior continues upon being escorted from the show floor, local authorities will be contacted and criminal charges may follow. • Anyone who sees or feels that their experience is being compromised due to unacceptable or questionable behavior is encouraged to speak with Wizard World staff immediately with any concerns for appropriate action. Wizard World staff can be located in the Registration area and throughout the show floor in black polo shirts marked STAFF.

COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT
Ryan Frye TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU GOT STARTED AS A COSPLAYER? It all started while searching for a costume at a retail Halloween store. The clerk and I started talking about how much we love wearing costumes. One thing led to another and he introduced me to his group of friends that “cosplayed”. I had heard this term before when I watched a documentary about how popular it is in Japan. But, I had no idea how popular it is here in the states too. Turns out his friends welcomed me into their circle with open arms and I started doing charity events with their group Costumers With a Cause. From then on I was hooked and started touring various cons.
YOU ARE MOST KNOWN TO COSPLAY AS THOR. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE COSPLAYING AS THOR. I like to get into character no matter the costume I’m wearing. So I have a lot of fun doing a parody version of Thor. You know, the big Jock with the cheesy one liners. Thor has become tremendously popular because of the recent movies so people are naturally drawn to me when I wear this costume, but then they can’t help but laugh when I start talking to them.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST MEMORY AT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I’ll never forget meeting Stan Lee in the hotel I was staying at during Wizard World Austin Texas. I was coming down the elevator, half dressed in my Thor costume, when it stopped at one of the floors. In walks Stan Lee with his handler who ended up standing between us as the doors shut. I didn’t want to be “that guy” that freaks out in front of Stan the Man Lee so I just stood there suppressing my inner screaming fan boy. After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Stan’s handler leaned over to him and said, “Hey Stan, we’ve got the god of thunder over here.” and then motioned over to me on the other side. He leaned around his handler and shouted, “Oh hey! Nice to meet you!” We shook hands and the rest of that elevator ride was glorious.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO COSPLAYERS ON ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE? Be you and have fun. I know that sounds cliche, but there are too many in this community that exclude people just because they don’t look the part of the character or didn’t make every little piece of the costume themselves. Learning to make costumes comes with time and through the amazing friendships that seem to instantly form in this community.
WHAT ARE OTHER COSTUMES YOU ARE WORKING ON AND WHAT IS YOUR DREAM COSTUME TO MAKE?

Right now I’m currently working on a steam punk version of Lion-o from the 80’s cartoon Thunder Cats and the 90’s version of Aqua Man. My dream costume? I have always wanted to cosplay a character from one of Frank Frazetta’s artwork. But to narrow it down from there would be impossible because I love all of his paintings.

COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT
Q&A with IVY DOOMKITTY ON COSPLAYING: HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET STARTED AS A COSPLAYER? Well, it started a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away. I went to my first comic book convention about 9 years ago. Oddly enough, it was Wizard World LA. I saw people running around in costume and loved the idea of expressing your fandom through costuming and emulating the character. It was something that I wanted to do, but felt that I would get called names, laughed and ridiculed, therefore I chose not to proceed. This mentality continued for years, deciding to do a costume before a con, only to let my insecurities and thoughts of what others would think affect me, and then choose not to cosplay. It wasn’t until 4 years ago that comic book artists/writer, Frank Cho, asked me to model for his live art panel... in costume. It was a huge deal for me and with the help of a friend, I made the costume. It was fun and I loved modeling, but I didn’t quite count it as cosplay. I did this for the next 2 years as well, growing a little bolder with each modeling session at the con, but still quite afraid to walk a convention floor in costume. It wasn’t until SDCC 2012 that I decided to just do it and walk the floor in costume. I had emailed Frank about cosplaying as his Liberty Meadows Brandy dressed as a Star Trek TOS red shirt print that he was doing for the con and he said to go for it. With 2 days left before the con, I made the costume. It was an absolute blast walking the con floor. I never expected it to be so much fun. What I loved was the conversations about TOS that I was able to have with anyone that stopped me. I felt that I was finally able to emulate a character and express my fandom. After that I dove in and went crazy on costume making.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM CHARACTER TO COSPLAY AS AND WHY? Samus in her Varia Suit is my holy grail of costumes. I loved the Metroid series and was also a big fan of Metroid Prime when it came out. Samus is a strong female figure and I feel the costume construction would be incredibly challenging for me and require the use of several mediums to achieve. I like a good challenge.
WHAT ARE YOUR GO TO TRICKS FOR LAST MINUTE COSTUME EMERGENCIES? Have a hot glue gun, velcro, or needle and thread handy. I’ve had an instance or two where something “malfunctioned” and a hot glue gun fixed the problem in a cinch.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE INSECURITIES ABOUT THEIR BODY IMAGE FOR COSPLAYING AND IN GENERAL? Don’t believe for one second that you are the wrong “body type” for a character. Artists draw different versions of characters all the time. Look at artists like Frank Cho and J. Scott Campbell. Both draw their women very differently, but they are nonetheless beautiful in every way. Cosplay is also an expression of art. You’re showing your love for a character and there is nothing wrong with celebrating that, regardless of your size/shape/etc. There will be people that are negative and sometimes try to knock you down, but at the end of the day the important thing is that you had had fun and are happy with yourself. Also remember: For every one negative comment that you see, there are 20+ positive ones. Why let the negative ones affect your life and dictate what you do and don’t do. Stick with the positive and you will be happier.
ON WIZARD WORLD: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS ABOUT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I love the feeling being amongst family when I go to a Wizard World show. I very much enjoy how they make cosplay a MAJOR part of their convention, promoting the art and now including Cosplay Circuit. I like

COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT how there is a perfect balance between media guests, comic book artists/ writers, and cosplayers. One thing that I love that I noticed no other con does, is greet every person that walks through the door in the morning and thanks them for coming to Wizard World. I like how they show appreciation for the attendees of the con.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST MEMORY AT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? Ah! There are far too many! I’d have to say it’s a cross between Wizard World Portland 2012 and Wizard World Chicago 2012. Wizard World Portland is special to me because it is the first Wizard con that I started cosplaying at. It’s also the first con of 2012 that I began cosplaying and attended as a guest. I also had the honour of interviewing Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno in Portland, which was the icing on the cake. I’m excited to be returning back to Portland this year. It feels like an anniversary! Wizard World Chicago holds a special place in my heart because I was honestly unprepared for how many fans would be there. I never expected for so many to be there to see me and it definitely made me teary eyed. The booth was incredibly busy, but it was fun. I spent the time interacting with fans, telling stories, hearing stories, and just all laughing over anything and everything. I felt like I was amongst friends and I loved it. I hope to be able to attend Wizard World Chicago again as I miss everyone there so much.

ANY AND ALL EVENTS ON THE SHOW STAGE (SKITS, PHOTO OPS, PERFORMANCES, ETC)
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GAMING SYSTEM AND WHY? Normally I would say the 360, however, lately it’s been my SNES. I’ve had it since I was 6 (yes, it still works) and as much as I love next gen consoles, nothing really beats the nostalgia of retrogaming. You blow at the cartridge, pop it in, and a flood of childhood memories come at you. It brings you back to simpler times (literally) and honestly, the games were much more difficult than most are now.
WHAT 2014 MOVIE RELEASE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? Ahhhh X-Men Days of Future Past! Honestly, I’m just a huge X-Men and Magneto fan and I really can’t wait to see what they do with the storyline, although I have heard that there is some deviation from the comic. I’m not a purist in the sense, and am fine with small changes to the story as long as it makes sense to do so. I’m just hoping it’s nothing reminiscent of X3, which butchered the story in its entirety.

TV PERSONALITY SPOTLIGHT WW: Do you cosplay, and as what? AS: I am an authentic but low-maintenance
cosplayer. I’ve got great Indiana Jones, Zombie Tony Stark and Shaun (from “Shaun of the Dead”) costumes that I rotate.
WW: What has been your favorite cosplay at a Wizard World convention?
AS: At Wizard World Philadelphia, a group
of cosplayers were dressed as Batman characters from the 1960s Adam West show. They were great, but the experience was only made better when they all crammed into an amazing TARDIS replica and poked their heads out of the door.
WW: Do you have a favorite nerd debate you like to get into?
AS: I will debate to no end that “Indiana

aron Sagers is a TV personality, entertainment journalist and author. He also really, really loves zombies, the paranormal, Doctor Who, Star Wars and a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. For more than a decade, Aaron has been a “professional nerd” interviewing some of the coolest names in geek culture and covering every aspect of the nerd world. The New York City resident has gained a following as host/co-executive producer of Travel Channel’s “Paranormal Paparazzi,” an entertainment/lifestyle news show revolving around the horror and supernatural genres. His credentials also include MTV, CNN, The Huffington Post, BBC and recently hosted an online show for the premiere of Syfy’s “Being Human.” He is author of “The Paranormal Pop Culture Collection: Rambling and Shambling Through The Entertainment of the Unexplained” and is founder of the blog ParanormalPopCulture.com. And since 2013, he’s been one of Wizard World’s resident hosts, and has moderated for Norman Reedus, Zachary Quinto, Robert Rodriguez, Michael Shannon and more.
WIZARD WORLD: Can you share some recent nerd milestones? AARON SAGERS: My job has led to some awesome adventures lately. I dressed up as Robin
and rode with Batman in one of Adam West’s Batmobiles through Time Square; I went to London to film an Simon Pegg and ended up going on a pub crawl of the bars from “The World’s End”; I was in Transylvania with Bram Stoker’s descendant to film a project. Then I got to interview five Doctors from “Doctor Who,” including Tom Baker, which led to me breaking the news story about his involvement in the 50th Anniversary Special!
Jones and the Temple of Doom” is grossly underrated, as is “Dawn of the Dead.”
WW: What’s next for you? AS: I’ll also be speaking at the International
UFO Congress in Arizona, which is huge honor. Additionally, I’ll be working on a few TV projects I can’t yet reveal but I am ecstatic about those.
WW: How can fans find you? AS: Hit me up on Twitter @AaronSagers or at ParanormalPopCulture.com!
WW: Who’s your favorite Doctor? AS: I grew up watching Tom Baker with my
dad on PBS, and I still love the scarfed one. But Matt Smith is a very close second.
WW: Luke or Han? AS: As a kid, Luke. But as you get older, you
realize you want to be the cool scoundrel, so then it was Han.
WW: Ewoks or Jar Jar? AS: Ewoks. I loved them when I was a kid. Plus they had the “Yub Nub” song. AND they were maneaters. Trust me.
WW: What is your favorite Wizard World experience? AS: Every Wizard World I attend is both unique but also familiar. I walk away with so many
stories, but my favorite to date was from Nashville. As I was walking from a panel back to the convention floor, I saw a cosplayer dressed as Iron Man. A little girl ran up and gave him a huge hug. It was just so cool and reminded me how much of an impact this world has on people.
WW: Who has been your favorite celebrity to meet and moderate for at a Wizard World? AS: Introducing Bruce Campbell was a real treat for me because he was one of my first
celebrity interviews when I became a journalist. A lot of time has passed since then but now that I live the life of a professional nerd, it feels kind of like full circle for me. I also always dig speaking to Wil Wheaton. His insights on geek culture are really dead-on, and he’s had a very positive impact on the community.

LIVE FEARLESSLY I
n the year 2013, I told myself and my fans to challenge ourselves by living fearlessly every day. Now in 2014, I expect nothing different. Living fearlessly is not something that is an option, it’s a way of life. Fears are nothing but restrictions, they stop us from fulfilling the most out of life. I am not afraid of much, but I made it my goal in 2013 to get conquer some of my fears. How could I tell my fans to live fearlessly, if I did not face my own fears? I feared clowns and hot air balloons, so naturally, I dressed up as a clown and jumped out of a hot air balloon. It was scary and I was nervous but they don’t call me Fearless Frank for nothing. I will overcome each and every one of my fears along with all of you. In order to be fearless and succeed in life, the first fear to overcome is the fear of failure, which is something we all are afraid of. Do not be afraid to fail, everyone has failed at something. Even if you fail once, twice, three times or more, the way to conquer that fear is to try and try again. Tell yourself “I CAN” every day and after every try because if
WWW.WIZARDWORLD.COM
you keep your mind positive and focused you will succeed. Do not let failure defeat you, if you do, you will never know what could have been or what can be. Live fearlessly, do not tap out, and you will succeed. I encourage everyone to write down any of your fears, whether it be afraid of speaking to someone you like, fear of flying, fear of going after that position you want, and face them head-on. Once a person confronts their fears, those limitations stop being an obstacle and life becomes limitless. No fear is too small or too big, you have to work at overcoming them. You have to have the courage to take risks and go out of your comfort zone. This New Year is the perfect opportunity to start fresh and take the necessary steps to replace fear with greatness. We CAN reach all our goals, our dreams, and anything we put our minds to. Let’s take 2014 and make it our year. ––– Jason David Frank

“THE SMOKE” MORAN
TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED THIS PAST YEAR AS A COSPLAYER AT WIZARD WORLD? I’ve learned to inspire many people to be comfortable and not be intimidated to cosplay regardless of size, color, shape, or gender. While participating in cosplay panels at Wizard World, I am able to reach out and answer question for people that want to cosplay.
HOW DO YOU INVOLVE YOUR FAMILY WITH COSPLAY? DOES YOUR WIF E, YAHNE’, COSPLAY WITH YOU? My family is very supportive of my cosplay. My daughter came to the Philadelphia Wizard World show to surprise me. My wife, Yahne’, not only cosplays with me but she is my muse in what new costume ideas I come up with. She loves it! Fans love her cosplays as well.
WHAT WAS THE MOST LABOR INTENSE COSTUME THAT YOU HAVE MADE? The biggest cosplay challenge was my Optimus Prime costume. My friend, Mike, helped me put it together and it was a five to six month project. It was so detailed, I created a tutorial video in making the costume.
WHAT ADVISE TO YOU HAVE TO COSPLAYERS OF ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE? My advise to all cosplayers, both novice and experienced is: that there is not such thing as “Elite Cosplayers”, there’s just cosplay: Help inspire those who want to break into cosplay. Most importantly have fun.

When Dan Didio from DC Comics presented me with the honor of becoming Freight Train, it will be a moment of my life that I will never forget. ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Star MICHAEL ROOKER Talks Movies, Comic Cons
M
any Wizard World fans probably think first of “The Walking Dead” when they see the outsized personality of Michael Rooker holding court at his celebrity booth, the line of well-wishers and autograph seekers spilling into the aisle. But with more than 100 television and film roles to his credit, notably Cliffhanger and Henry, and the Marvel feature Guardians of the Galaxy hitting the big screen this summer, Rooker has shown that his resume is quite diverse. Rooker recently took a few minutes to talk to Wizard World about his famous roles, how filming went for Guardians and how he prepared for the role of Yondu.
WIZARD WORLD: You are one of the most popular guests at Wizard World shows. What do you like about attending the events? MICHAEL ROOKER: The big answer, of course, is meeting all the fans that come out. First off, some have made a tremendous effort to get to these events. Meeting the fans is just the most interesting aspect of these shows. WW: Besides ‘The Walking Dead,’ which roles do fans most want to talk to you about? MR: It’s by far ‘The Walking Dead,’ but now ‘Guardians of the
WWW.WIZARDWORLD.COM
Galaxy,’ because it is coming out this summer, is becoming more of a topic people are asking about. Also, a lot of people from the world of gaming ask about ‘Black Ops’ and ‘Black Ops 2.’
different from most; all actors have their own persoal way of getting ready, preparing, getting into the role, it’s all up to the individual. I really truly enjoyed that whole process.
WW: What did you enjoy about filming ‘Guardians?’ MR: I have discovered that it’s actually OK to be sitting in the makeup chair for hours (laughs). I never used makeup in my regular acting, hardly ever used any whatsoever, unless it was a scar or prosthetic work. But for Guardians it was five to six hours from arriving to being set ready, including makeup and wardrobe. I found that the whole process of preparing what you look like and makeup has been a very intersting thing for me. I got to do my internal prep work, getting myself ready while all the make up and wardrobe was being applied. Once we were ready for the camera, I stayed prepared throughout the day.
WW: Yondu is a bow hunter. How is your real-life marksmanship? MR: Dude, I made 50 yard hits with my bow. And, well, I made a little wager with my buddy at the range, there’s a mockup version of a grissly 150 yard away, and he said there’s no way I could hit it, but I knew I would hit it square. I asked what he wanted to wager, because I didn’t want to take his money, so we wagered a double tall mocha latte. First shot, bam! One hundred fifty yard away with a Mathews bow. It’s a simple short bow.
WW: Was there a particular challenge in the role of Yondu? Did you review some of the comics? Is it a copy of that character or more of yourself? MR: Definitely more of myself to it, because it was written that way. James Gunn wrote the role with me in mind: my aggressiveness, my humor is all over the role. So I did some research in regard to Yondu, but I was informed that I shouldn’t do too much, because we didn’t stay completely with the status quo with what Yondu is about in the comics. We departed a bit, and I think everyone is anxious to see how this is going to come out. WW: How was the preparation different than for other roles? MR: My preparation is a little
it. I was laughing so hard, it was really fun to watch. It’s so different from what we did on ‘The Walking Dead’ in terms of what we did was so serious, based in reality. It was a lot of fun to see zombies done in a campy way. I had just come from England – six months doing Guardian – so I had made a lot of friends there. So it was even funnier for me then.
WW: So who is a better marksman, you or Jennifer Lawrence? MR: Me, for sure (laughs). It’s two different types of bows. I’m pretty good with the natural bow, recure longbows. I’m pretty good at hitting targets in general. When I see the target I can hit it. Slingshots, shooting pistols, rifles. Anything with a target I like. WW: What is it about the 2012 spoof “Cockneys versus Zombies” that you find so appealing? MR: It was so silly and stupid I loved

GREG HORN TELL US ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH WIZARD WORLD’S 2014 EXCLUSIVE MARVEL VARIANT COVER INITIATIVE. As a member of Wizard World’s globehopping tour, I’m proud to be involved with the variant covers they’ll be doing all year with Marvel Comics. When Marvel contacted me to do the cover, is was quite a surprise because at the time I was unaware they had made an agreement with Wizard for their 2014 shows! An even bigger surprise was when they revealed to me that I’d be doing the variant cover for Wolverine which is one of their most popular characters!
DESCRIBE THE CONCEPT OF THE ‘WOLVERINE #1’ EXCLUSIVE VARIANT COVER THAT YOU HAVE CREATED FOR THE SACRAMENTO SHOW. The big deal about the new Wolverine book launch, is that he has lost his vaunted healing factor, and Marvel Comics wanted me to show him in some intense danger to reflect the new vulnerability. The original idea as presented to me for the Marvel Now book was to have Wolverine with 5 or 6 gun scopes pointed at him, with different views of Logan showing up in all the scopes! It was a fantastic idea-the kind of complicated concept an artist can really sink his teeth in to. But, after I sketched out the idea, we realized it wasn’t exactly appropriate for a family-friendly convention atmosphere! The image was just too intense, and we needed to tone it down. At this point, we were on an extremely tight printer’s deadline— only 3 days left, and Marvel decided to throw me the reins, and see what I could come up with as an alternate design! Eventually, I went with these shocking electrical cables…I felt
the sparks would add more energy and action to an already aggressive piece of art work. Everyone was happy with it—I think because it is so off-the-wall visually. Looking at the old design and what we ended up with, I think we took the right path!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO WIZARD WORLD AND HOW HAS IT CHANGED FROM YOUR FIRST SHOW? I’ve been attending Wizard World’s events for quite some time now and it has been a great partnership and learning experience. My first event was way back in 2002 at Wizard World Chicago. A few years later in 2004,I won Wizard’s Fan Choice award for “Best Painter of the Year”. Coming from the fans, it’s a very special honor to me, and I still have the award right here on my work desk keeping me company every day. I think I have only missed Chicago one time since then! Overall, the shows have changed greatly over the past decade, but most critically in the past 3 years since Wizard did a massive overhaul to their management and business model. Over that time, the boys and girls of Wizard have expanded their shows from just 4 events to 16! In addition to the best comic book guests, they keep surprising us with new pop-culture guests. For example, for New Orleans they got Doctor Who’s Matt Smith to attend, and for Sacramento they have just announced Chris Hemsworth of Thor fame. It looks to be another exciting year!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS DIGITAL PAINTER AND AS A COMIC BOOK ARTIST? Man, THAT is a long story. If I do it the long way, it will take 10 pages, so here’s a short version… When I first broke in to comics,I was
26 • WIZARD WORLD SACRAMENTO COMIC CON 2014
an awful artist! Luckily, the blinders of youth had me convinced that I was freakin’ awesome, so I spent about 10 years in and out of the comics industry diligently trying to break in with small independent comic book start-ups. Eventually, I met up with an old friend Jim Hudnall who was trying to get his book ESPers re-launched at Image Comics. After a few successful years with him, I approached Image with my own book called J.U.D.G.E. I spent a year and a half writing and designing this book. I had always had a love for airbrush illustration and figured this might be my last chance to make my mark, so I decided to digitally paint the entire comic book in my airbrush style. The book was a gargantuan success for me personally—probably the most important thing I’ve ever done for myself. But, it was only a moderate success financially, and I was left in limbo after about 11 years of trying to break in mainstream. I was literally about to quit comics and get a real job, when I finally got the call from Marvel Comics. So, when people ask me how to break in to comics, I’m not really sure what to tell them. My path was filled with a lot of frustration, but then again, I learned a lot in all that waiting and fighting. It’s a good thing in its own way…. but man 11 years is a loooong time.
WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS FOR SOME OF YOUR WORK? WHEN DID YOU BEGIN DRAWING AND WHAT/WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR INSPIRATIONS? My mother started teaching me to draw at a very early age. That makes her my first inspiration. I hope that’s not too corny! It’s true! Then later in life I was inspired by the superstar artists of the day like John Byrne and George Perez. I once showed George how I
WWW.WIZARDWORLD.COM

used to copy his art work to learn how to draw. He was so impressed he offered to write the foreword in my art book. Most recently, my kids are inspiring me because as I teach them to draw I find myself looking at art from a more basic point of view, instead of the myriad of complications I’ve built it up to be over the decades! For instance, I bought my daughter a Crayola painting kit, and she asked me “Daddy, why don’t you never draw with Crayons?” I didn’t have a decent answer, so I drew a Spider-man in crayon—it was terrible! But then, I started playing with the Crayola watercolors, and the Crayola Oil pastels (something I had never tried before), and before I knew it I had paint under my nails again! Something old became new again, and now watercolor and oil pastels are staples of my art when I’m doing traditional sketches or drawings on paper.
YOUR PROJECTS HAVE RANGED FROM COMIC BOOKS TO ADVERTISING FOR THE 2004 US OLYMPIC BASKETBALL TEAM. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS TO WORK ON AND WHY? The Olympic poster ranks right up there. It is easily my best paying gig ever—that never hurts… and certainly the widest circulation with spreads in all the major magazines. I will never forget walking in to Barnes and Nobles that week and picking up USA Today, Newsweek, Time, Sports Illustrated, ESPN… and inside each of them was my art work— usually as a pull out or centerfold piece— it was just amazing! Early on at my career with Marvel, a lot of advertising agencies and video game companies took note of the ground breaking digital art I was doing on their comic book covers, and I ended up with an unbelievable amount of high-profile
WWW.WIZARDWORLD.COM
assignments in a short period of time. I was Future Networks exclusive cover artist for about 3 years straight, and painted about 50 magazine covers between Playstation, XBOX, and PCGAMER. At the same time, I was also working on video game box art, and a plethora of advertising campaigns with the biggest names in the industry like Universal, Nike, Blizzard, EA Sports, Sony, GM-- all while plowing away on my Marvel covers. It was a crazy, busy time, and I don’t know how I survived! There’s been a lot of big jobs over the years, big names, but I’d have to say, the projects I still love the best are my comic book assignments with Marvel. The comic book mythology is so appealing to me and has always been my one true love regarding art. I became an artist because of the joy I found in comics, and that inspiration continues to this day. Wolverine just never seems to get old!
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROJECTS YOU ARE WORKING ON NOW? Right now I am working with The Walt Disney Company on a video game called MARVEL:War of Heroes. It is getting a ton of attention and the fan base is just insanity times ten! I get to draw a lot of characters I’ve never tried before like Galactus and Thanos and Silver Surfer. And of course there is always the women of X-men: Jean Grey, Storm, Black Widow, and Psylocke! It’s been a blast meeting all the fans of this game. They’re kinda crazy! The game is available for free on iPhone, Android, etc.
artistic endeavor for that matter, especially if you are doing a lot of travelling! I’m very lucky to have found someone who is behind me every step of the way! On the technical side, be sure to diversify your trade skills. Learn to pencil, ink, AND color because you never know which ability will click for you in a compelling way to people. You may WANT to be the superstar penciler, but perhaps coloring will open the door for you!
If you want, come work for me… for free. I’ll chain you to the basement floor and guarantee you’ll be prolific at the very least! For all the latest news and artwork, join Greg’s Facebook page at
