ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
ROB
PRIOR CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED PAINTING AND DRAWING WITH BOTH HANDS? When I was about 10 years old. I got it in my head that I might someday lose my right hand so I switched to my left hand for the next couple of years. Later, when I was almost 17, I had math homework and a painting due. So I picked up two brushes to get my work done faster. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR INSPIRATIONS AS AN ARTISTS AND AS A STORYTELLER? Wow... Artist wise I would have to say Robert Hiendel, Drew Struzan, and my father Alan Prior. As for writing/directing, Alfonso Cuarón and Christopher Nolan YOU SEEM TO BE A JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES; WORKING IN PRINT, GAMING, TELEVISION, AND FILM. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING PROJECTS TO WORK ON? Wow again, to say I have a lot going feels like an understatement. On the art side I am working on several things, but the most fun and cool is the art I am doing with and for Tech N9ne! We have an art book coming out and posters as well. Along with the art book and posters, I have had the opportunity to paint on stage during several of Tech N9ne’s live performances. Tech has been the most fun and he has become a great friend. Speaking of performances, I am performing with a couple of other bands, which I will announce later this year. In the television world I have a show with Warner Horizon call “Red Brick Road”, and a few more in the works. As for movies, I have four that I am currently signed to do. In October I will be shooting a film called “Whisper” written by Tyler Erskine. Later in

the year, I am working with writer Adam Simon on two films called, “Scroll” and “The Change”. The last film on my list is a very special one to me written by Beverly Hynds called “Story Tellers”. Not to add even more (but I will), I have recently become The SVP of Creative for “Heavy Metal” magazine with my partners Jeff Krelitz, David Boxenbaum and the ever amazing Kevin Eastman. YOU HAVE BEEN COMING TO WIZARD WORLD FOR MANY YEARS. WHAT MAKES WIZARD WORLD DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CONVENTIONS? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS AT WIZARD WORLD? A bunch of great things! My top four reasons why Wizard World is different: the tour, attending guests, the industry, and the staff. I like the national appeal from doing conventions all over the country. It has also been nice to see all the stars there (most of my friends), which ties into my film world. Lastly, the folks at Wizard World have become like family. An amazing wonderful group of people! TELL US ABOUT WIZARD WORLD’S CREATOR PRO AM: DRINK AND DRAW AND HOW YOU ARE INVOLVED? I am the host and let me tell you, SH#T gets crazy!! It is simple really, there is an art portion and a writing portion of a cool and friendly competition that involves giving away prizes and alcohol. Does it really get any better than that!? WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON AND MOST EXCITED FOR IN 2014? I have several gallery shows to add to the long list of stuff that I am doing already. I am most excited to meet the fans, both old and new.

‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Star MICHAEL ROOKER Talks Movies, Comic Cons
M
any Wizard World fans probably think first of “The Walking Dead” when they see the outsized personality of Michael Rooker holding court at his celebrity booth, the line of well-wishers and autograph seekers spilling into the aisle. But with more than 100 television and film roles to his credit, notably Cliffhanger and Henry, and the Marvel feature Guardians of the Galaxy hitting the big screen this summer, Rooker has shown that his resume is quite diverse. Rooker recently took a few minutes to talk to Wizard World about his famous roles, how filming went for Guardians and how he prepared for the role of Yondu.
WIZARD WORLD: You are one of the most popular guests at Wizard World shows. What do you like about attending the events? MICHAEL ROOKER: The big answer, of course, is meeting all the fans that come out. First off, some have made a tremendous effort to get to these events. Meeting the fans is just the most interesting aspect of these shows. WW: Besides ‘The Walking Dead,’ which roles do fans most want to talk to you about? MR: It’s by far ‘The Walking Dead,’ but now ‘Guardians of the
Galaxy,’ because it is coming out this summer, is becoming more of a topic people are asking about. Also, a lot of people from the world of gaming ask about ‘Black Ops’ and ‘Black Ops 2.’
different from most; all actors have their own persoal way of getting ready, preparing, getting into the role, it’s all up to the individual. I really truly enjoyed that whole process.
WW: What did you enjoy about filming ‘Guardians?’ MR: I have discovered that it’s actually OK to be sitting in the makeup chair for hours (laughs). I never used makeup in my regular acting, hardly ever used any whatsoever, unless it was a scar or prosthetic work. But for Guardians it was five to six hours from arriving to being set ready, including makeup and wardrobe. I found that the whole process of preparing what you look like and makeup has been a very intersting thing for me. I got to do my internal prep work, getting myself ready while all the make up and wardrobe was being applied. Once we were ready for the camera, I stayed prepared throughout the day.
WW: Yondu is a bow hunter. How is your real-life marksmanship? MR: Dude, I made 50 yard hits with my bow. And, well, I made a little wager with my buddy at the range, there’s a mockup version of a grissly 150 yard away, and he said there’s no way I could hit it, but I knew I would hit it square. I asked what he wanted to wager, because I didn’t want to take his money, so we wagered a double tall mocha latte. First shot, bam! One hundred fifty yard away with a Mathews bow. It’s a simple short bow.
WW: Was there a particular challenge in the role of Yondu? Did you review some of the comics? Is it a copy of that character or more of yourself? MR: Definitely more of myself to it, because it was written that way. James Gunn wrote the role with me in mind: my aggressiveness, my humor is all over the role. So I did some research in regard to Yondu, but I was informed that I shouldn’t do too much, because we didn’t stay completely with the status quo with what Yondu is about in the comics. We departed a bit, and I think everyone is anxious to see how this is going to come out. WW: How was the preparation different than for other roles? MR: My preparation is a little

it. I was laughing so hard, it was really fun to watch. It’s so different from what we did on ‘The Walking Dead’ in terms of what we did was so serious, based in reality. It was a lot of fun to see zombies done in a campy way. I had just come from England – six months doing Guardian – so I had made a lot of friends there. So it was even funnier for me then.
WW: So who is a better marksman, you or Jennifer Lawrence? MR: Me, for sure (laughs). It’s two different types of bows. I’m pretty good with the natural bow, recure longbows. I’m pretty good at hitting targets in general. When I see the target I can hit it. Slingshots, shooting pistols, rifles. Anything with a target I like. WW: What is it about the 2012 spoof “Cockneys versus Zombies” that you find so appealing? MR: It was so silly and stupid I loved

t has been more than 35 years since “The Incredible Hulk” first hit TV screens in the fall of 1977. One of Marvel’s most popular comics franchises was brought to life by the brilliant acting of Bill Bixby as Dr. Banner and the iconic portrayal of The Hulk by Lou Ferrigno, then a newcomer to Hollywood but already an accomplished athlete and bodybuilder. Though he has gone on to a successful career in acting, fitness and other endeavors, for many, Ferrigno will always be the one and true Hulk. Thousands of fans at dozens of Wizard World shows have “marveled” at this gentle giant, still in fantastic condition at 62
and currently co-founder of FerrignoFit.com, a community that celebrates positive, healthy living, along with his daughter Shanna. Ferrigno took a few minutes to discuss the legacy of the Hulk and what it means to him to reach out to fans at Wizard World shows nationwide. WIZARD WORLD: What do you think made ‘The Incredible Hulk’ such a successful series? LOU FERRIGNO: Every one of us has a little Hulk inside of us. The Hulk releases out anger and inner frustrations, and I think people can relate to that.
WW: You have noted that Bill Bixby was very much a mentor to you. How did he influence your acting career? LF: Bill taught me how to be a professional. I had no acting experience when I first got the part, and he immediately took me under his wing and helped me immensely. His simple advice was to know your lines and be in character. He taught me to believe in the character, and everything worked from there. WW: How much of a fan of the Hulk were you before you took on the role? LF: I was The Hulk my whole life. I loved the comics. When I was growing up, because I had hearing loss, I was shy and didn’t socialize

much. I imagined I was The Hulk and would one day overcome that and do great things. WW: You were competing against the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger when you started your acting career. How did you get the Hulk role? LF: Universal Studios called me for an audition. They had shot the pilot, and as I understand it, the young son of one of the producers was on set and said, ‘That’s not the Hulk!’ Another actor was in the role, and he was taller and didn’t embody the Hulk character as well. I had done the documentary ‘Pumping Iron’ with Arnold Schwarzenegger and they had seen that. When that boy saw me on set, he said ‘now THAT’s the Hulk.’ WW: What was the most challenging part of playing The Hulk? LF: More than the time to put on the makeup was sustaining the makeup and enduring the long hours. There’s a scene where I’m overturning a car into a ditch, and we did a few takes with a chain attached. It was so late and I was so ready to leave, I just lifted it up without the chain and we had the shot. WW: Other than the Hulk, what role do the most fans ask you about at Wizard World shows? LF: They like to talk about The King of Queens. It was fun playing the neighbor, and fans really connected with that. Kevin James and the whole team were great to work with. Or they like to talk about weightlifting and Arnold. WW: What is your favorite thing about attending shows like Wizard World Comic Con? LF: I love Wizard World show because the fans are great and so many of them are happy to see me and the other celebrities in this setting. There is so much excitement for pop culture, and I think Wizard World gives the fans the best entertainment.

Q&A
with
ERIC
“THE SMOKE” MORAN
WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED AS A COSPLAYER AT WIZARD WORLD? I’ve learned to inspire many people to be comfortable and not be intimidated to cosplay regardless of size, color, shape, or gender. While participating in cosplay panels at Wizard World, I am able to reach out and answer question for people that want to cosplay.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST LABOR INTENSIVE COSTUME? The biggest cosplay challenge was my Optimus Prime costume. My friend, Mike, helped me put it together and it was a five to six month project.
CHECK OUT THE MAKING OF PRIME: http://youtu.be/peEO6K_TmzU
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO COSPLAYERS OF ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE? My advice to all cosplayers, is that there is no such thing as “Elite Cosplayers.” It’s just cosplay! Just help inspire others who want to break into cosplay and have fun.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST MEMORY AT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I’ve had many great moments at Wizard World over the years, but the one that stood out for me was hosting the Wizard World Costume Contest last year for the first time at Wizard World Ohio. From the crowd to the contestants, to the judges it was incredible! It was like being in a dream and not wanting to wake up.
RECENTLY, YOU WERE ANNOUNCED AS THE ALTER EGO FOR DC COMIC’S FREIGHT TRAIN! TELL US HOW PUMPED YOU ARE AND WHAT THAT MEANS FOR YOUR GOING FORWARD. When Dan Didio from DC Comics presented me with the honor of becoming Freight Train, it will be a moment of my life that I will never forget. Being Freight Train gives me the chance to show kids a real superhero. For me, it brings a whole new level of cosplaying.

Ryan Frye TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU GOT STARTED AS A COSPLAYER? It all started while searching for a costume at a retail Halloween store. The clerk and I started talking about how much we love wearing costumes. One thing led to another and he introduced me to his group of friends that “cosplayed”. I had heard this term before when I watched a documentary about how popular it is in Japan. But, I had no idea how popular it is here in the states too. Turns out his friends welcomed me into their circle with open arms and I started doing charity events with their group Costumers With a Cause. From then on I was hooked and started touring various cons.
YOU ARE MOST KNOWN TO COSPLAY AS THOR. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE COSPLAYING AS THOR. I like to get into character no matter the costume I’m wearing. So I have a lot of fun doing a parody version of Thor. You know, the big Jock with the cheesy one liners. Thor has become tremendously popular because of the recent movies so people are naturally drawn to me when I wear this costume, but then they can’t help but laugh when I start talking to them.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST MEMORY AT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I’ll never forget meeting Stan Lee in the hotel I was staying at during Wizard World Austin Texas. I was coming down the elevator, half dressed in my Thor costume, when it stopped at one of the floors. In walks Stan Lee with his handler who ended up standing between us as the doors shut. I didn’t want to be “that guy” that freaks out in front of Stan the Man Lee so I just stood there suppressing my inner screaming fan boy. After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Stan’s handler leaned over to him and said, “Hey Stan, we’ve got the god of thunder over here.” and then motioned over to me on the other side. He leaned around his handler and shouted, “Oh hey! Nice to meet you!” We shook hands and the rest of that elevator ride was glorious.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO COSPLAYERS ON ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE? Be you and have fun. I know that sounds cliche, but there are too many in this community that exclude people just because they don’t look the part of the character or didn’t make every little piece of the costume themselves. Learning to make costumes comes with time and through the amazing friendships that seem to instantly form in this community.
WHAT ARE OTHER COSTUMES YOU ARE WORKING ON AND WHAT IS YOUR DREAM COSTUME TO MAKE? Right now I’m currently working on a steam punk version of Lion-o from the 80’s cartoon Thunder Cats and the 90’s version of Aqua Man. My dream costume? I have always wanted to cosplay a character from one of Frank Frazetta’s artwork. But to narrow it down from there would be impossible because I love all of his paintings.

COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT
Q&A with IVY DOOMKITTY ON COSPLAYING: HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET STARTED AS A COSPLAYER? Well, it started a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away. I went to my first comic book convention about 9 years ago. Oddly enough, it was Wizard World LA. I saw people running around in costume and loved the idea of expressing your fandom through costuming and emulating the character. It was something that I wanted to do, but felt that I would get called names, laughed and ridiculed, therefore I chose not to proceed. This mentality continued for years, deciding to do a costume before a con, only to let my insecurities and thoughts of what others would think affect me, and then choose not to cosplay. It wasn’t until 4 years ago that comic book artists/writer, Frank Cho, asked me to model for his live art panel... in costume. It was a huge deal for me and with the help of a friend, I made the costume. It was fun and I loved modeling, but I didn’t quite count it as cosplay. I did this for the next 2 years as well, growing a little bolder with each modeling session at the con, but still quite afraid to walk a convention floor in costume. It wasn’t until SDCC 2012 that I decided to just do it and walk the floor in costume. I had emailed Frank about cosplaying as his Liberty Meadows Brandy dressed as a Star Trek TOS red shirt print that he was doing for the con and he said to go for it. With 2 days left before the con, I made the costume. It was an absolute blast walking the con floor. What I loved was the conversations about TOS that I was able to have with anyone that stopped me. I felt that I was finally able to emulate a character and express my fandom. After that I dove in and went crazy on costume making.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE INSECURITIES ABOUT THEIR BODY IMAGE FOR COSPLAYING AND IN GENERAL? Don’t believe for one second that you are the wrong “body type” for a character. Artists draw different versions of characters all the time. Look at artists like Frank Cho and J. Scott Campbell. Both draw their women very differently, but they are nonetheless beautiful in every way. Cosplay is also an expression of art. You’re showing your love for a character and there is nothing wrong with celebrating that, regardless of your size/shape/etc. There will be people that are negative and sometimes try to knock you down, but at the end of the day the important thing is that you had had fun and are happy with yourself. Also remember: For every one negative comment that you see, there are 20+ positive ones. Why let the negative ones affect your life and dictate what you do and don’t do. Stick with the positive and you will be happier.
ON WIZARD WORLD: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS ABOUT A WIZARD WORLD SHOW? I love the feeling being amongst family when I go to a Wizard World show. I very much enjoy how they make cosplay a MAJOR part of their convention, promoting the art and now including Cosplay Circuit. I like how there is a perfect balance between media guests, comic book artists/ writers, and cosplayers. One thing that I love that I noticed no other con does, is greet every person that walks through the door in the morning and thanks them for coming to Wizard World. I like how they show appreciation for the attendees of the con.

LIVE FEARLESSLY I
n the year 2013, I told myself and my fans to challenge ourselves by living fearlessly every day. Now in 2014, I expect nothing different. Living fearlessly is not something that is an option, it’s a way of life. Fears are nothing but restrictions, they stop us from fulfilling the most out of life. I am not afraid of much, but I made it my goal in 2013 to get conquer some of my fears. How could I tell my fans to live fearlessly, if I did not face my own fears? I feared clowns and hot air balloons, so naturally, I dressed up as a clown and jumped out of a hot air balloon. It was scary and I was nervous but they don’t call me Fearless Frank for nothing. I will overcome each and every one of my fears along with all of you. In order to be fearless and succeed in life, the first fear to overcome is the fear of failure, which is something we all are afraid of. Do not be afraid to fail, everyone has failed at something. Even if you fail once, twice, three times or more, the way to conquer that fear is to try and try again. Tell yourself “I CAN” every day and after every try because if

you keep your mind positive and focused you will succeed. Do not let failure defeat you, if you do, you will never know what could have been or what can be. Live fearlessly, do not tap out, and you will succeed. I encourage everyone to write down any of your fears, whether it be afraid of speaking to someone you like, fear of flying, fear of going after that position you want, and face them head-on. Once a person confronts their fears, those limitations stop being an obstacle and life becomes limitless. No fear is too small or too big, you have to work at overcoming them. You have to have the courage to take risks and go out of your comfort zone. This New Year is the perfect opportunity to start fresh and take the necessary steps to replace fear with greatness. We CAN reach all our goals, our dreams, and anything we put our minds to. Let’s take 2014 and make it our year. ––– Jason David Frank

TV PERSONALITY SPOTLIGHT WW: Do you cosplay, and as what? AS: I am an authentic but low-maintenance
cosplayer. I’ve got great Indiana Jones, Zombie Tony Stark and Shaun (from “Shaun of the Dead”) costumes that I rotate.
WW: What has been your favorite cosplay at a Wizard World convention?
AS: At Wizard World Philadelphia, a group
of cosplayers were dressed as Batman characters from the 1960s Adam West show. They were great, but the experience was only made better when they all crammed into an amazing TARDIS replica and poked their heads out of the door.
WW: Do you have a favorite nerd debate you like to get into?
AS: I will debate to no end that “Indiana
Jones and the Temple of Doom” is grossly underrated, as is “Dawn of the Dead.”
TV PERSONALITY SPOTLIGHT WITH
AARON SAGERS
A
aron Sagers is a TV personality, entertainment journalist and author. He also really, really loves zombies, the paranormal, Doctor Who, Star Wars and a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. For more than a decade, Aaron has been a “professional nerd” interviewing some of the coolest names in geek culture and covering every aspect of the nerd world. The New York City resident has gained a following as host/co-executive producer of Travel Channel’s “Paranormal Paparazzi,” an entertainment/lifestyle news show revolving around the horror and supernatural genres. His credentials also include MTV, CNN, The Huffington Post, BBC and recently hosted an online show for the premiere of Syfy’s “Being Human.” He is author of “The Paranormal Pop Culture Collection: Rambling and Shambling Through The Entertainment of the Unexplained” and is founder of the blog ParanormalPopCulture.com. And since 2013, he’s been one of Wizard World’s resident hosts, and has moderated for Norman Reedus, Zachary Quinto, Robert Rodriguez, Michael Shannon and more.
WIZARD WORLD: Can you share some recent nerd milestones? AARON SAGERS: My job has led to some awesome adventures lately. I dressed up as Robin
and rode with Batman in one of Adam West’s Batmobiles through Time Square; I went to London to film an Simon Pegg and ended up going on a pub crawl of the bars from “The World’s End”; I was in Transylvania with Bram Stoker’s descendant to film a project. Then I got to interview five Doctors from “Doctor Who,” including Tom Baker, which led to me breaking the news story about his involvement in the 50th Anniversary Special!
WW: What’s next for you? AS: I’ll also be speaking at the International
UFO Congress in Arizona, which is huge honor. Additionally, I’ll be working on a few TV projects I can’t yet reveal but I am ecstatic about those.
WW: How can fans find you? AS: Hit me up on Twitter @AaronSagers or at ParanormalPopCulture.com!
WW: Who’s your favorite Doctor? AS: I grew up watching Tom Baker with my
dad on PBS, and I still love the scarfed one. But Matt Smith is a very close second.
WW: Luke or Han? AS: As a kid, Luke. But as you get older, you
realize you want to be the cool scoundrel, so then it was Han.
WW: Ewoks or Jar Jar? AS: Ewoks. I loved them when I was a kid. Plus they had the “Yub Nub” song. AND they were maneaters. Trust me.
WW: What is your favorite Wizard World experience? AS: Every Wizard World I attend is both unique but also familiar. I walk away with so many
stories, but my favorite to date was from Nashville. As I was walking from a panel back to the convention floor, I saw a cosplayer dressed as Iron Man. A little girl ran up and gave him a huge hug. It was just so cool and reminded me how much of an impact this world has on people.
WW: Who has been your favorite celebrity to meet and moderate for at a Wizard World? AS: Introducing Bruce Campbell was a real treat for me because he was one of my first
celebrity interviews when I became a journalist. A lot of time has passed since then but now that I live the life of a professional nerd, it feels kind of like full circle for me. I also always dig speaking to Wil Wheaton. His insights on geek culture are really dead-on, and he’s had a very positive impact on the community.

Here, to give an overview of various ideas about and approaches to comics studies are a cross-section of comics scholars and teachers, including: Dr. Travis Langley (Henderson State University; Batman and Psychology), Eric Bailey (Henderson State University), Peter Coogan(Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre), Rob O’Nale (Comics Through Time), and David Schuman (Washington University St. Louis). FROM TOTTER’S LANE TO TRENZALORE: MORE THAN 50 YEARS IN THE TARDIS
What is Steampunk? Increasingly popular and rabidly promoted by its converts, this aesthetic has a design sensibility that borrows from our steam-engine past to imagine a Victorian future that never was. From Victorian England to American Wild West, to the deepest of darkest Africa, fashion from all over the world is fair game. But what is good fashion without good accessories? This panel will talk about how to build props and devices for the steam punk costume of your dreams. Starting a basic level that allows for beginners, but informative enough that experts can also gain from this panel, it is open to all who wish to learn about steam punk, in a half lecture, half Q and A format. Come explore steampunk with Joshua Hart AKA Baron Bon Bar, noted local-to-St. Louis Steampunk artist who has had nationwide exposure, in several books and websites, including Geeks are Sexy, Boing Boing, 1000 incredible costume ideas, and the International Steam Punk Book of Fashion. (ROOM 144)
Marvel Comics (then known as Timely) was founded 75 years ago, in 1939, with its first comic book, Marvel Comics #1, which featured the debuts of Sub-Mariner and Human Torch. But the company’s biggest hit would be Joe Simon & Jack Kirby’s Captain America, which premiered a year later. With this weekend’s opening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a panel of Capophiles assembles to yap about Cap and Marvel. The group includes: Chris Samnee (Captain America and Bucky: The Life Story of Bucky Barnes), Salvador Larroca (Heroes Reborn: The Return), Peter Coogan (Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre), Rob O’Nale (Comics Through Time), and Danny Fingeroth (The Stan Lee Universe). (ROOM 151)
What began as a Police Box in a junkyard five decades ago continues this fall with more epic adventures in time and space. This panel surveys all things Doctor Who looking back at the first Eleven Doctors of the new and classic series with a preview of Season Eight as Peter Capaldi takes over as The Doctor. (ROOM 142)

WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN (& WOMEN)? I DO! I DO! THE DELIQUENT COMIC ART OF WASCALLY WEE HARROFF
Using Comic Life software, these comic historians will offer the humorous, bittersweet assertion that comics really are responsible for juvenile delinquency - and they’re just the comic-reading delinquents to prove it! Ever since the self-appointed culture wars expert of the 1950s, Dr. Fredric Wertham (think Dr. Phil), declared comics responsible for juvenile delinquency, America’s parents have been running scared of their children. The funny thing is that the same topics that frightened the bejabbers out of Americans back then continue to plague our nightmares, today. The only difference is that our weather is worse. The authors will relate Wertham’s loony, quasi-scientific arguments and then show you how his hypothesis can be used to create award-winning modern art. But don’t look too closely! Are those naughty bits in Wascally’s comic art only visible to his eye or do you see them, too? It’s infinitely more fun to be a juvenile delinquent. Learn how! (ROOM 160)

CREATIVITY THAT LASTS
11:30 – 12:15PM
1939: THE YEAR THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
As an artist, writer, actor, musician or creator, there is nothing more challenging than the development of the creative process. Is art birthed from the spontaneous or is it a result of a carefully crafted rhythm and structure? In this panel, esteemed creators, Rob Prior (Spawn; Deep Space 9; Evil Ernie; Heavy Metal,) Genese Davis (The Holder’s Dominion,) and Aaron Dontez Yates (Tech N9ne) will describe how to overcome creative obstacles and share their keys to unleashing creativity. (ROOM 144) 75 years ago, as fateful events that would lead to the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 were coming together in Europe, the U.S.A. was experiencing, in the same year, an explosion of popular culture. In 1939, Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27; Timely (later Marvel) Comics released Marvel Comics #1, showcasing the first Marvel superheroes, Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch; and Hollywood produced classic films including The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Stagecoach. Discussing historical and cultural factors that made that year so important is a panel including Athena Finger (granddaughter of Bill Finger, the co-creator of Batman); Dr. Travis Langley (author of Batman and Psychology); Eric Bailey (Henderson State university). Peter Coogan (Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre), and Danny Fingeroth (Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero.) (ROOM 151)

OUT OF THE SHIRE WITH SEAN ASTIN
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Batman co-creator Bill Finger’s birth, 75th anniversary of Batman’s debut, and 25th anniversary of the Tim Burton motion picture that proved audiences could take Batman seriously. Who really created Batman? How much of the Dark Knight’s design and defining qualities came from the character’s uncredited co-creator, Bill Finger? How many of his enemies thrill us thanks to Finger, and how many of Batman’s adventures, supporting characters, and wonderful toys as well? Not only did he enrich the Dark Knight mythos, but Bill Finger also co-created Wildcat, came up with Superman’s other girlfriend Lana Lang, and wrote the very first Green Lantern tale. To discuss the Cape Creator’s life and work, Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight) has assembled a truly super team: Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch,) Robert O’Nale (The Cape Creator: A Tribute to Bill Finger) and - making her very first convention appearance anywhere - Bill’s only heir, Athena Finger. (ROOM 151)
Cultural trends are almost always reflected in popular media, comic books are no exception. By exploring some ground breaking moments in comic book history and how they reflect what was happening at the time of their writing we can gain a better understanding of how comic books portrayed early stages of the civil rights movement and other social justice movements such as LGBTQ issues and immigration. Finally we will also have a Q and A on the state of comic books and tolerance as it stands today. (ROOM 151)

Every great superhero faces a rogues gallery full of colorful supervillains. What makes a great supervillain? How evil do they have to be? Do they resemble real criminals in any way? Are they truly insane or just having fun? Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight) assembles of super-team of experts to explore what it means to be a supervillain and what kind of person could become one: Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch,) Eric Bailey (Henderson State University,) Peter Coogan (Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre) and maybe a villain or two. You’ve been warned! (ROOM 142)

Whether it’s cultural barriers or societal sexism, super women have had to fight more than just crime in order to survive. Come join author Genese Davis (The Holder’s Dominion) and special guest speakers discuss the challenges and obstacles of creating relevant female protagonists. They will divulge not only important discoveries, but relevant discussions about gender in entertainment and pop culture. (ROOM 144)
As writers, we’d love to sleep as late as we want, spend all day - or night - writing, and go to bed whenever we feel like it. In reality, we have day jobs, families, hobbies, and emotions. These can all make it hard to get your dream out into the world. How do you juggle all this with your passion and make your dream a reality? Learn some tricks to keep your sanity while still being productive. (ROOM 151)
