STUDIOS AND GALLERY
This studio project is an expansion to Seattle Academy's art department. The sculpture studios are located close to the ground, to give access to outdoor space. The painting studios are located on the top floors to maximize natural light. The gallery spaces are sandwiched in between. GALLERY LEVEL
MATERIAL CONCEPT The studio began with the creation of a visual collage, followed by a material concept. Both were based on the materials and textures that are "naturally occuring" in the urban environment. ENTRY LEVEL

The University of Washington is engaged in research ranging from historical and anthropological documentation of the native cultures of the Northwest to cutting edge experimentation in biotechnology and plasma fusion. This studio project provides a place where UW's academic output can be presented to the public in various media.

LOCATION DRIVES FORM
FROM CAMPUS MASTER PLAN
The site is located at the intersection of several major routes of pedestrian and vehicle circulation. Being at the corner of 15th & Pacific also makes it the University's face to the city, and a symbol of UW as a public institution.

Arch 402 - The Modern City in the Age of Globalization Due to Chandigarh’s strict architectural regulations, recent developement has taken place outside of the city limits, with Indian companies such as Infosys and Reliance locating in the periphery. This project is located at the site of the old Interstate Bus Terminal in Sector 17. It departs from Le Corbusier’s controls, and places an iconic structure in the city’s core. This is intended to create a sense of place and spur growth that conterbalances the movement of business away from the city center.

“The existence of one building encourages growth of buildings around it, with the buildings acquiring specific urban value through their relationship to one another; in time they become incomplete forms when considered by themselves. - Richard Sennett, The Open City N

The louvered dome is designed to admit sunlight whenever the sun is below 50° (Chandigarh’s sun angle at the equinox). The louvers also shed rain, and the angled section allows them to support their own weight.

THE INTERSECTION OF PATHS, UNEXPECTED OPPORTUNITIES
Corbusier’s plan for Chandigarh was based on minimizing points of intersection in order to decrease commuting times and make the city more efficient. This project tries to do the opposite without increasing congestion. The idea is to make the planned city of Chandigarh a place where unplanned combinations result in social and technological progress, and the creation of new opportunities.

CHANDIGARH REGIONAL COMMUTING
in interviews people said they commute up to 2.5 hours each way by car, bus and train. Most of these cities and villages are within this range.

RAIL TO SECTOR 17 Panchkula

Because Chandigarh's existing rail station is outside of the city's core, usage of rail is below its potential. This project proposes that commuter trains coming from Ludhiana and Ambala terminate in Sector 17, Chandigarh's central business sector.

Arch 403 - Lowrise Housing Studio The widely criticized Seattle “4-Packs” remain popular with buyers because they provide easy car access and private outdoor space. This project improves on the 4-Pack by providing larger outdoor spaces and more natural light. Parking is provided below grade. South facing windows provide passive heating, and north-facing solar water heaters gather diffuse light during Seattle’s cloudy winters. (It was later stated that solar panels should always be oriented toward direct sunlight)

CONCEPT
STAGGERED “ROWHOUSE”
The original idea was to use a checkerboard based figure-ground pattern in order to increase interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Two of the units were kept at a zero lot-line condition in order to minimize the amount of narrow, unusable space. Three of the units were pulled away from the lot line to provide circulation and minimize the site’s impact on neighbors.
SHARED COURTYARD
The shared courtyard configuration is becoming a popular alternative to detatched single-family housing, but the half-arc layout results in a long wall on one side of the site that would adversely affect neighboring sites in a lowrise neighborhood.
Site Context
BALLARD TOWNHOUSES SEATTLE, WA ZONING: LOWRISE-3 FAR: 1.4 PARKING: UNDERGROUND 18
5 HOUSES, 5 COURTYARDS This project provides each home with access to a private or semiprivate courtyard. The units are laid out so that there is easy access to outdoor spaces. Sliders are placed to increase this interaction between indoor and outdoor. The garden spaces are meant to be continuous with indoor living.
POST-PROJECT REVISION
The drawing above shows the possibilities offered by eliminating on-site parking. However unrealistic, this allows a more livable example of the staggered rowhouse concept.

IZUMO SHRINE This torii frames a view of the forest behind it. I think it is a powerful symbol, and looking into the distance one can almost feel the presence of a deity, with limitless power; the direct anti-thesis of a bomb. 24
PIRANESI DRAWING The assignment for this drawing was to complete a Piranesi drawing with the center taken out. 25
PISTON - XRAY AXONOMETRIC These drawings are architectural in that they reveal underlying structure. They are part of a pre-architecture hand drawing class.
