Jerry Mullis Scores Six at Daytona Dirt!
Daytona Dirt World Championships
V
olusia County was the place to be for dirt karters the week between Christmas and New Years with two big events within miles of each other during the final week of 2011.
other dirt racers to win multiple main events were Garret Himmighoefer, who triumphed in Sportsman 1 Lite and Sportsman 1 Heavy, and William Prince, who won Sportsman 2 Lite and Sportsman 2 Champ.
Dirt racers from around the country headed to Daytona Beach this past holiday season for the World Karting Association Daytona Dirt World Championships Dec. 27-30, which for the third time was held at the quarter-mile Daytona Flat Track outside turns one and two of the DIS superspeedway.
Mullis kicked KartWeek off with a win in the week’s first main, Stock Lite. The 32-year-old shoe bested WKA Speedway Dirt veteran Bradley Hauser by 0.308 seconds to capture the 20-lap feature. Aaron Burnett finished in third, a few kart-lengths back of Mullis and Hauser. Wyatt Corkell was fourth and Bruce Edwards rounded out the top five.
Following practice and two days of racing at Daytona, many teams packed up shop Thursday night and traveled to nearby INOX Supreme Lubricants Kartway at Volusia Speedway Park for the Winter Nationals on Friday, Dec. 30 to wrap up nearly a week’s worth of racing. Mullis time When the dust settled at Daytona, Fort Mill, South Carolina’s Jerry Mullis clearly was the dominating force, not only at the Flat Track, but throughout the three WKA Daytona KartWeek events, including the Manufacturers Cup Margay Sprint Championships and National Road Racing Series’ Daytona Championships. Mullis captured an unmatched six wins at the Dirt World Championships, including the prestigious $1,000-To-Win Animal Heavy Money Race Thursday afternoon. The only

Mullis returned to the limestone-based quarter-mile later Wednesday and wheeled his Phantom to the Stock Heavy win, which was the largest field of the day at 22 starters. Mullis fended off challenges from local runner Flyin’ Brian Hunter to win the 20-lapper by a 0.377-second margin. Justin Holt was right behind Hunter in third. Georgia’ Shay Chavous ran fourth and Matt Collier fifth. Sixth through tenth was Wyatt Corkell, Hauser, Jerrod Holle, Chuck Paige and Fast Eddie Alkire. The last race Wednesday, Raptor Heavy, saw Mullis best nine other starters to triumph for the third time on the day. Tara Henderson was the only driver within ear shot of Mullis by the end of the 20-lapper, crossing the stripe 1.4 seconds back of the Fort Mill wheelman. Woody Peatt, Nick Brobst and Josh Parker crossed the stripe nose to tail in third through fifth.
Thursday was a new day at Daytona and it actually started out to be a disappointing day for Mullis. Stock Medium, traditionally one of the most competitive classes in WKA Speedway Dirt competition, kicked the day off and saw Mullis suffer a mechanical failure while running toward the front of the field on lap seven. Mullis’ early retirement may not have mattered in the grand scheme of things. Hunter qualified on the pole with a fast lap of 16.070 and controlled the 20-lap main with challenges only from Florida’s Josh Robinson and Chavous. In the end, Hunter finished over a half-second in front of Robinson for his only win of WKA KartWeek. Chavous took third, Corkell fourth and Aaron Burnett fifth.
“Relax, take a breath and drive smart,” the 18-year-old Hunter said after his win. Mullis’ fourth victory of the week came in Raptor Lite, the final warmup, if you will, before the big Money Race. Mullis led most of the 20-lap main until Hauser, who’d hounded him from the green flag, made a solid inside pass to take the lead and drive to what would have been his second win of KartWeek. However, Hauser had troubles in postrace tech and was disqualified for an illegal carburetor. Hauser’s disappointment was Mullis’ benefit as it gave the Phantom racer another feature win. Henderson was credited with second for another runner-up finish to Mullis in a flathead class. C.J. Waldron was third, Clint Riley fourth and Keith York fifth.

Daytona Dirt World Championships The Animal Heavy Money Race had the fences and grandstands full with a cool $1,000 on the line for the 26 starters. Hunter timed on the pole at a 16.123 with Norman Hynes and Mullis second and third. For the second year in a row the main went green to checkered and the caution-free race was all Mullis needed to take the lead from Hunter early in the race and pull out to a convincing 3.6-second lead for his most dominating victory of Daytona KartWeek.
Hunter bagged $500 for second while Michael Seeright took care of some of his expenses with $250 for third. Robinson and Scott Beckey finished fourth and fifth, while Chavous finished just outside the money in sixth. Darren Brown was seventh, Holle eighth, Collier ninth and Justin Holt tenth. Mullis’ added a sixth triumph to his 2011 Daytona resume with a score in Champ Heavy. Norman Hynes put his Epic Evolution chassis on the pole for the 20-lap, 18-kart Champ Heavy main, besting USAC and Must See Sprint Car racer Troy DeCaire and Mullis by a slim margin.
While most fans were hoping for a closer showdown among Mullis and his top challengers, Mullis surely was happy enough to race to the victory without a challenge or threat and pocket the $1,000 payday before heading to Volusia.
The feature saw Mullis pull ahead of DeCaire and ride to a cool 0.770-second victory over the Florida native. Hauser had his best champ-kart run in a while with a third-place effort. Todd Crenshaw was fourth and Jason Lineweaver fifth. Hynes slipped through the field in the feature and ended up finishing

Himmighoefer, Prince each take a pair Ridgely, Maryland, racer Garret Himmighoefer entered two races at Daytona and won them both – the only KartWeek driver able to make that claim. The 9-year-old racer first won Wednesday’s Sportsman 1 Lite feature by nearly a half-second gap over Florida’s Dillen Brown. Himmighoefer passed Brown for the lead with only four laps remaining and pulled away for the big win. Luke Barnes was third, Daniel Larrimore fourth and Lane Penley fifth in the 11-kart main. “I would like to thank my dad and mom,” Himmghoefer commented. “Without my dad I wouldn’t have been at Daytona. He put in a lot of time to get me here and I just want to say thank you.” Himmghoefer and his Southern Expresspowered Firehawk returned Thursday to best James Seeright in the Sportsman 1 Heavy 20-lapper. Himmighoefer led wire-to-wire and gapped second place by over a half straightaway in a dominating drive. Seeright was 3.661 seconds back in the
runner-up position with Brown in third. North Carolina’s Luke Barnes ran fourth with Pennsylvania’s Spencer Yodock rounding out the top five. “I again want to thank my mom and dad – especially my dad who worked so hard on my kart and tires to get me here. I could never have done this without him. Thank you and I love you!” Himmighoefer said after his second win at Daytona. One of the closest races at the Flat Track saw William Prince win his first main of KartWeek in a highly contested Sportsman 2 Lite affair. The top-six finishers were all within one second of one another at the finish. Prince wheeled his Phantom Seraph to the win by a mere 0.065-second margin over Alabama’s Connor Okrzesik. The tight finishing order didn’t stop with the top-two finishers. New York’s Michael Wagner was a close third, Sean Glennon fourth, Cam Ayres fifth and Holden German was only 0.828 seconds back in the sixth position. Prince’s second win came late in the day Thursday with his score in Sportsman 2 Champ. Prince again bested Okrzesik for the win, this time by a 0.124-second margin. Glennon was third, Wyatt Alexander fourth

In an astounding statistic, Okrzesik ran four competitive races at Daytona and never finished worse than second. Connor’s only win came in Sportsman 2 Box Stock, which saw him drive his No. 14 kart to a 1.3-second victory over Prince. Christain Lee was third, Logan Lane fourth and Matthew Epp fifth. Daffron had Thursday’s Jr Heavy main in hand until a late caution bunched up the field. The restart saw a wild battle for the lead. Nichols muscled his way into the top spot with under five laps remaining and held on for the win over Daffron, who looked like he needed another lap or two to mount a challenge on the Maryland racer. Jesse Riggins picked up another top five with a third-place result. New Jersey’s Scott Neary was fourth and Anderson again finished fifth. Stearly was able to find one victory this year at Daytona in a dominating performance in Box Stock Junior. Stearly pulled out to a 3.3-second lead before the checkers waved. Dustin Peterson was second, Matt Craig third, Bryce Jenkins fourth and Riggins fifth.
“I’d like to thank Spencer Yodock for being such a sportsman driver in the race,” the 8-year-old CKI driver commented after the win. “Special thanks to Lewis Dow at CKI for his support with helping us get into champ buggy racing. Also special thanks to Team Swagger Capt. David Gay for his support with LBK. Keep Jesus Christ in karting!” Florida’s Clay Harris gave Phantom another triumph with his win in Sportsman 1 Box Stock. Harris, 10, took the lead early in the 20-lapper and held on for a 0.839-second victory over James Seeright, who again was denied of a Daytona win with another secondplace result. Daniel Larrimore was third, Lane Penley fourth and Ira Mattice fifth in the ninekart field.

Blaze Burns, Austin Nichols, Branson Dils and Stearly each won a junior main at KartWeek 2011. Georgia’s Burns, a WKA Dirt veteran, passed Stearly late in the Jr Lite 20-lapper and held on for a tight 0.222-second win over the Pennsylvanian. Burns and Stearly were both over two second ahead of third-place Cole
Hynes, Kitzmiller, Holt are all senior class winners Norman Hynes clearly was one of the top champ-kart competitors at Daytona and the 35-year-old’s speed was good enough for the Champ Lite victory Wednesday evening. Hynes qualified fifth in the 15-kart field and worked for the entire race to make his way to the front of the pack with a last-lap pass on Jerry Mullis. Hynes raced his Epic Evolution chassis to the win by a mere 0.061-second margin

Trinity, N.C., dominated the Builder Prepared Box Stock 20-lapper Wednesday afternoon. Hauser finished well ahead of Clint Riley for his first Daytona triumph. Steven Rogers took third, Robert Clements fourth and Jana Gunter fifth. “Half tracking the field at Daytona felt great,” Hauser commented after his win. “I had the best time at Daytona this year. Our karts ran great and our JREngines had plenty of power to keep us up front. Big thanks to Charlie and Dan Sox for all their help.” Alex Cline bested a competitive 16-kart Senior Box Stock main with a 0.288-second victory over Matt Collier. Chavous was third, Wayne Alderman fourth and Michael Nicosia fifth. Thursday saw 21 fast 2-cycle powered karts hit the track for the 20-lap UAS main. Chavous and Peters were the class of the field on this day with Chavous fending off Peters throughout the second half of the race to score his only victory of KartWeek. Peters finished just 0.319 seconds back of Chavous and was close enough to make a move at times, but had to settle for second as Chavous, similar to Peters on Wednesday, made no mistakes throughout the final laps. 2011 UAS national champion John Decker was third on his black and yellow No. 51. Bobby Leslie was fourth and Charles Stoffa fifth.
Peters, Chavous win 2-cycle mains Two big names in karting took a pair of big 2-cycle wins at Daytona. TS Racing’s Victor Peters scored the victory in Wednesday’s WKA Unlimited 2-Cycle before Shay Chavous won Thursday’s Unlimited All Stars 2012 season opener. Peters bested pole-sitter Robby Yow by a 0.603-second margin to score a popular win in Unlimited 2-Cycle. Peters, a veteran of WKA dirt karting since the early days of the World Championships at Daytona Municipal Stadium, found a way past Yow and Chavous and then made no mistakes down the stretch to hold off Yow for the big win.

Racing Dreams Director Marshall Curry nominated for an Oscar® Marshall Curry, the director of Racing Dreams, the award-winning documentary based on the trials of three WKA Speedway Pavement Series competitors, has been nominated for the Oscar® in the Documentary Feature category for his most recent film, If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front. Curry and his crew met the karting community several years ago when he traveled the Speedway Pavement Series and documented Josh Hobson, Annabeth Barnes and Brandon Warren’s experiences at the national karting level. Racing Dreams debuted in 2009 and was met with very good reviews. The Academy Awards are Sunday, Feb. 26. Here’s an update on Josh Hobson and Annabeth Barnes and were they’re at in their lives and racing careers. * Josh Hobson is now a senior in high school, maintains a 4.0 grade average, and is hoping to go to college next year. He is president of the student body, captain of the wrestling team, and is still involved with racing. For the past couple of years he has raced in a full sized car in the ASA Late Model racing series. * Annabeth Barnes is now in 11th grade and is racing full sized late-model stock cars against adult drivers. Last year at the Hickory Motor Speedway (“Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars”) she had nine topfive finishes and one win, finishing fourth in track points for the year. Annabeth is the subject of the Great American Country television series Born to Drive, which follows her as she competes at Hickory. In 2009, she became the youngest person ever selected for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity, a driver development program started in 2000 with the goal of preparing women and minorities to compete in both regional and national motorsports events.

For 25 years,
NATIONAL KART NEWS
has covered it all. and it won ’t stop there. If it involves karting, we’re there. If it came from karting, we’re there. If it evens sounds like it might have something to do with karting, count us in. For a quarter of a century we’ve covered the sport like no other… And we’re just getting started.
