M+ Rover is a major school and community outreach programme that launched in 2016. The customised trailer of M+ Rover is a travelling creative studio and exhibition space that tours to local secondary schools and community spaces. M+ Rover 2018 is on the road from February to June 2018. Schools participating in this free programme receive an original M+ resource pack outlining the creative spirit of M+ Rover. M+ Rover experience is like a space expedition to an unknown planet, taking students to an uncharted creative territory. The programme emphasises participatory art practices and collaborations between students and artists, and offers an experience of the creative processes of contemporary visual culture that encourage interpersonal interactions, dialogues, and exploration of new possibilities. M+ Rover features an exhibition that evolves as it travels from school to school and as students contribute to the ever-changing show. The exhibition is open to all staff and students on

the activity day, and participating students can also take part in community visits with M+ Rover and initiate a dialogue with the public. Each year, M+ commissions a local cultural practitioner to participate in the programme. This year, M+ is collaborating with artist Ng Ka Chun. In the first year, M+ Rover 2016, M+ collaborated with artist Tang Kwok Hin and photographer Siu Wai Hang. In M+ Rover 2017, M+ worked with illustrator and comic writer Rainbow Leung. Participating schools will receive an artist toolkit developed by M+ in collaboration with the commissioned artist. The toolkit provides additional information on contemporary visual culture and art, and is designed to help teachers develop their lesson plans and make the best use of the museum’s collection and relevant learning resources.

藝 術家簡介

Taking the concept of “village building” as the starting point, Ng Ka Chun and his students take up the role of villagers in their re-imagining of new possibilities for communal or campus facilities. In the spirit of DIY, Ng guides his students to put the concept of “Think with your hands” into practice and seek the meaning of remodelling through the process of assembling ideas and objects. By incorporating deviations into the final creations, accidents are turned into components of the concept.

M+ provides secondary school teachers with a resource pack that helps them to prepare their students for the activity by introducing them to the participating artist and his or her works before the M+ Rover visit. After the visit, this pack can help initiate discussions and related activities, serving to enhance the student experience. This resource pack collection grows with a new commission every year. Teachers may use the pack for research and lesson planning.

A Hong Kong artist, Ng graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University. His works are mainly in sculptural and installation formats, presenting the recycling and remoulding of manufactured goods as a response to the essence of space and object. Ng has participated in school projects such as the “Artist-in-residence Programme” (HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, 2015) and “Social Furniture: Public Waste Recycling Project” (1a Space, 2011) with the aim of bringing students into social settings, in order to explore the formats and possibilities of public goods from the perspective of blending craft with product design. Ng’s move back to Pat Heung, Yuen Long in 2013 inspired him to create more works that explore the rural-urban development. In the same year, he co-founded the art group MUDwork with local artist Chung Wai Ian. He has participated in a number of local community and art education projects with the method of object creation. These projects include “Play Depot” (Play Depot 2017), “W Playground” (Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, 2017) and “A Pot of Spring on the Stairs” (Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2017).
