Told almost entirely without dialogue, Lula del Ray recounts the story of a lonely adolescent girl growing up with her mother in an isolated trailer on the edge of a vast, desert satellite field. One night, while watching stars in the dark sky, she hears the songs of the soulful country duo The Baden Brothers on the radio. Obsessed by their music, she runs away from home, heading to the city and into a world of danger, deception and disappointment. Set in the American Southwest of the 1950s, the original, feature-length, live cinematic shadow puppet show Lula del Ray is a mythic reinvention of the classic coming-of-age story, inspired by the imagery of old films and the music of Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline.

Company Bio

Manual Cinema MANUAL CINEMA is a performance collective, design studio, and film/ video production company founded in 2010 by Drew Dir, Sarah Fornace, Ben Kauffman, Julia Miller, and Kyle Vegter. Manual Cinema combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and innovative sound and music to create immersive visual stories for stage and screen. Using vintage overhead projectors, multiple screens, puppets, actors, live feed cameras, multi-channel sound design, and a live music ensemble, Manual Cinema transforms the experience of attending the cinema and imbues it with liveness, ingenuity, and theatricality. To date Manual Cinema has created five original feature length live cinematic shadow puppet shows (Lula Del Ray, ADA/ AVA, Mementos Mori, My Soul’s Shadow, The Magic City); a live cinematic contemporary dance show created for family audiences in collaboration with Hubbard Street Dance and the choreographer Robyn Mineko Williams (Mariko’s Magical Mix); an original site-specific installations (La Celestina); an original adaptation of Hansel & Gretel created for the Belgian Royal Opera; music videos for Sony Masterworks, Gabriel Kahane, three time GRAMMY Award-winning eighth blackbird, and NYTimes Best Selling author Reif Larson; a live non-fiction piece for Pop-Up Magazine; a self-produced short film (CHICAGOLAND); a museum exhibit created in collaboration with the Chicago History Museum (The Secret Lives of Objects ) a collection of cinematic shorts in collaboration with poet Zachary Schomburg and string quartet Chicago Q Ensemble (FJORDS ); and live cinematic puppet adaptations of StoryCorps stories (Show & Tell). “this Chicago troupe is conjuring -Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Puppet Festival (Minneapolis), The Screenwriters’ Colony in Nantucket, The Detroit Institute of Art, The Future of Storytelling Conference (NYC), the NYC Fringe Festival, The Poetry Foundation (Chicago), the Chicago International Music and Movies Festival, the Puppeteers of America: Puppet Festival (R)evolution, and elsewhere around the world. Manual Cinema was ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago in the Theater and Performance Studies program in the fall of 2012, where they taught as adjunct faculty. In 2013 Manual Cinema held residencies and taught workshops at the School of the Art Institute (Chicago), The Future of Storytelling Conference (NYC), RCAH at Michigan State University, and Puppeteers of America: Puppet Festival (R)evolution (Swarthmore, PA), Southern Illinois University, and the Chicago Parks District. In Spring 2016 Manual Cinema held workshops at Yale University as visiting lecturers in the theater department. Recently, Manual Cinema premiered The Magic City, a new show for children and their families, adapted from a novel by Edith Nesbit, at Chicago Children’s Theatre. In Fall 2016, they contributed visuals, music, and sound design for an immersive adaptation of Peter Pan with producer Randy Weiner (Sleep No More, The Donkey Show, Queen of the Night) which premiered in Beijing in December 2016. This spring they begin production on another feature length show, The End of TV, to premiere at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, June 19-22, 2017. They are also currently creating a new performance, No Blue Memories, about the life and work of poet Gwendolyn Brooks, commissioned by the Poetry Foundation and based on a screenplay by Eve Ewing and Nathaniel Marshall. In 2017, the company will have debuts in Australia, France and Germany and will return to the Edinburgh Fringe with Lula del Ray.

She holds degrees in Theatre Performance and French from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She also trains in aerial/circus arts, and does motion and performance capture for video games. She most recently completed the cinematic performance capture for Supergirl in Injustice 2.

Other favorite puppet and non-puppet related credits include: The Plagiarists, Oracle Theater, Tympanic Theater, Right Brain Project, Rough House Theater, The Ruckus, Lifeline Theater, Factory Theater and the Whiskey Rebellion. You can find her occasionally performing her dance theater pieces at Salonathon on Monday nights. Charlotte is represented by Grossman & Jack.

Her primary medium is shadow puppetry, though she has also been experimenting with puppetry across multiple media -- paper craft, sculpture, video, animation, and taxidermy. She often performs at Nasty, Brutish & Short, a quarterly puppet cabaret in Chicago. Most recently she was selected to perform at the 2016 National Puppet Slam in Atlanta, GA. He currently sits on the board at the Friends of the Gamelan, Chicago's Javanese Ensemble, and is working on a full length album and video installation. For his acting endeavors, he is represented by Brown Management group, and during the school year he works as a substitute teacher for Chicago Public Schools.

LIA KOHL is a cellist and multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago. Her work centers on improvisation, performance and sound art. She is a curator and ensemble member with the acclaimed performance ensemble Mocrep, with whom she has toured nationally and internationally. As a member of Mocrep, she has collaborated with artists such as Jennifer Walshe, Natacha Diels and Steven Kazuo Takasugi and partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago, MCA, Lumpen Radio, and Mana Contemporary Chicago. As an improviser she performs regularly around Chicago and with her clarinet / percussion / cello trio, ZRL. An avid interpreter of contemporary music, she performs with Chicago Composers Orchestra, Fonema Consort, manual cinema and Ensemble Dal Niente.


IZZY OLIVE SFX / 歌唱 Vocals Izzy Olive 是一位活躍於芝加哥的音樂師和作家。作為 Half Gringa 樂隊成 員的她畢業於芝加哥大學。為 Chicago tape Parlour Tapes+ 的音響工程 師及 First Floor Theater Company 的作曲及作詞。她大部份的作品關於 思考如何以不同方式同時呈現音樂和戲劇。 Izzy Olive is a Chicago-based musician and writer who performs as Half Gringa. She spends a lot of her work thinking about different ways to present music and theater simultaneously.

ERIC STREICHERT 結他 Guitar / 低音結他 Bass / 歌唱 Vocals Eric Streichert 成長於佛羅里達州裡的代托納海灘,於 Flagler College 主 修心理學。他受《易經》啓發移居到芝加哥 6 年,為電子合成樂隊 Color Card 的低音結他手,曲風較夢幻而不重型。Eric 也是一名調酒師,於美 國 DePaul University 修讀寫作與出版碩士,現為 lumpenradio.com 節目 《The Butter Hours》聯合主持。在手動影院的演出中他會演奏多種樂器, 亦會於部份情況下製作剪影。精神動物:烏龜,就和 John Dillinger 一樣。 ERIC STREICHERT (Guitar, Bass, Vocals) was born and raised in Daytona Beach Florida. Majored in Psychology at Flagler College. Had a profound experience with the I Ching. Received affirmation that he should move to Chicago. Has lived in Chicago for 6 years. Plays bass in dreamy synth band that is not as synth heavy anymore, Color Card. Bartends downtown. Master of Arts in Writing and Publishing from DePaul University. Co-host of The Butter Hours on lumpenradio.com. Multi-Instrumentalist and occasional silhouette for Manual Cinema. Spirit animal: turtle, same as John Dillinger.

SHELBY GLASGOW 團務經理及舞台監督 Company/Stage Manager Shelby 是一位喜歡旅行的自由身舞台監督。自今年 9 月加入手動影院作 巡 演 舞 台 監 督 和 團 務 經 理 後,她 就 帶 領《Ada / Ava》、《Lula Del Ray》、 《Mementos Mori》和最新作品《The End of TV》在美國和世界各地巡迴。 Shelby 畢業於中佛羅里達大學,獲舞台管理藝術學士學位,一直於美國 各地擔任舞台監督。她感謝手動影院為她提供了這個難能可貴的機會。

Shelby is a freelance stage manager who loves to travel! She joined Manual Cinema in September as their Touring Stage Manager and Company Manager. She has since toured within the United States and internationally with Ada/Ava, Lula Del Ray, Mementos Mori, and their newest show The End of TV. Shelby graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BFA in Stage Management and has since stage managed regionally all over the country. MIKE USREY (Production Manager, Sound Engineer) has mixed in around a hundred venues worldwide, ranging from large outdoor festivals to theaters and clubs. He toured internationally for three years with the band Dark Dark Dark (Minneapolis, MN) as front of house engineer. He has also toured with Pillars and Tongues (Chicago, IL), A Hawk and a Hacksaw (Albuquerque, NM), Royal Canoe (Winnipeg, MB Canada) and Pattern is Movement (Philadelphia, PA). He has been the front of house sound engineer for Manual Cinema since 2014.
