Martial art is more than dishing out quick blows and kicks, traditional martial arts also involved weaponry. This enhanced martial art as a combat system and form of self-defense. Weaponry was introduced by the Chinese who are believed to have forged the first blunt weapons that later spread to Europe and other parts of the world, especially when the need for combat systems arose. You have probably noticed that there are many disciplines to choose from as far as martial arts go and therefore, different weapons and equipment are used in these varied arts.

Well, it is interesting training with different types of martial arts weapons, but do you know what perfect weapons may be? We review how to select good martial arts weapons for your training and competition.

Types of martial arts weapons: They are classified into two broad categories 

Blunt weapons-it is easy to identify blunt weapons. Any weapon without a sharp cutting edge is probably a blunt weapon. Despite not having cutting edges, these weapons are deadly as they can cause damage bludgeoning or even stunning. The staff that was used in the ancient Okinawa to balance water or any luggage on shoulders was among the first blunt weapons developed. The club was among Bruce Lee’s best weapons and falls under this category together with crutch and Buddha just to mention a few.

Edged weapons- These are bladed weapons with cutting edges. These weapons are perfect for stabbing opponents, puncturing and even thrusting them with less effort compared to what one would have used to stun an opponent using blunt weapons. Examples of edged weapons include; spears, swords, daggers, axes, knives, you name them!

How do you choose what weapon to use? 1. Motive of having the weapon- depending on what you want to use the tool on, then one can depict what weapon to use. For training purposes blunt weapons are effective. 2. Speed- if you want to achieve a high speed in your moves then it is necessary that you choose light weapons that wont strain you when making quick moves. 3. Opponent’s weapon- when competing with an opponent, it is necessary to choose your weapon after studying what your competitor has. You may decide to use long weapons to keep a safe distance and counter your opponent’s weapon. 4. Size of the weapon- Small weapons are specifically used in certain occasions that long weapons may not be effective, depending on the scenario you are training or competing from then one can judge on the size of weapon to use. 5. The Material used to make the weapon- This can form part of your judgment in finding the best weapon to use. Weapons made of Wood, plastic and metal are relevant in different forms of art.

In conclusion: Different weapons are used to perform specific arts. It is therefore important based on the factors discussed above for one to make a perfect choice on the particular weapon to use in performing that specific art.
