What choices do I have on Karate belts? Your interest in Karateto keeps yourself physicallyfit or maybe as a form of self-defence has seen you enrol in a training facility. Congratulations. But are you aware of the type of Karate belt your facility will accept? Do you know that Karate belts are used to define ranks and what a beginner Karate practitioner wears is different from what a seasoned practitioner will wear?

It is a daunting task deciding on which belt to settle at while attending your Karate sessions. It is for this reason that we are breaking down the fundamentals of a Karate belt to ease the task of choosing. What to consider before choosing a Karate belt: Material: Depending on your taste for the outer material used to make Karate Belts, you have a choice of three materials namely;   

Pure Cotton Pure Satin Silk

Cotton belts- For those with the taste of antique Karate belts, your hassle is over. Karate belts made of cotton are apparently the most traditional belts. They pose a tight grip when tied with a commendable durability not forgetting that they never fade abruptly. Satin Belts- You must like how satin belts shine. With an exceptional durability, these belts can be a great choice for you. Silk Belts-Talk of luxury in Karate and there you have the silk made karate belts. I must admit that it is the most beautiful of all the belts. Well, its limitation, however, comes when they don’t last for long.

Brand: Depending on the manufacturer, one has a choice of counterchecking on the quality of material used, the craftsmanship portrayed when making the belt. I must mention that settling on a certain brand is a matter of personal choice. What size to wear? The Size of Karate belt to wear is dependent on the manufacturer. It is however recommended that you settle on a longer strap if you don’t find a perfectly fitting belt because when washed, these belts tend to shrink and will at least still fit you. Here is a typical formula used to come up with the size of belt to wear: “Length of the belt= waistline (cm) with the kimono (karate suit) on +Hanging Length (cm) (length supposed to hung in front after tying the knot) + 30cm (for the knot)”

Embroidery: As you ascend ranks in karate, you may like to define your achievements through the art of embroidery. These are exceptional designs with great popularity in the motherland of karate –Japan - and have seen a lot of imitation elsewhere in the world. The most acceptable colour for embroidery in most styles is gold with different manufacturers customising variations on this colour. It must be noted that colour is a primary concern in choosing a Karate belt. Before purchasing a Karate belt, it would be wise if you consult with your school so that you may not go against their standards. Most schools will commence training on white belt and their colour sequence will be explained before rising up the ranks.
