Cross on Kobyla Góra

Route from Ostrzeszów to Mikstat

In the past amber trade was very common in many countries in Europe. Merchants’ caravans carrying “the treasure of the Baltic Sea” were crossing the continent in every direction. One of the most popular trade routes was the trail connecting the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic Sea. It crossed the present region of Wielkopolska leading along the ribbon of lakes Ślesińskie through Kalisz, Ostrzeszów and further to Śląsk (Silesia). Today we can follow this route travelling by bike along the Amber Bicycle Route - recommended for cyclers with bicycle bags. Distance:

Recommended tourist attractions Kobyla Góra – the highest peak of Wielkopolska (284 m above the sea level), the “Wielkopolska Cross” - 20 m high, made of metal and painted blue, erected in 1999 to celebrate the millennium.

Parzynów – a wooden St Nicholas’ church from the second half of the 19th century, with Renaissance furnishings.

Ostrzeszów – a tall tower and a part of Medieval defensive walls, 14th century parish church of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Baroque post-Bernardine monastery dating from the 17th century, a wooden St Nicholas’ church from the mid-18th century, and a town hall dating back to 1840. Mikstat – the Neo-Baroque Holy Trinity Church from 1914-18 with an impressively big false dome. A wooden cross from the second part of the 19th century, made by a famous folk artist Paweł Bryliński, situated in front of the church. Above the village buildings you can find a cemetery and a small shingled wooden St. Roch Church from 1788 with a tower topped by a tented roof. Interesting information: every year in the middle of August blessing of pets and other animals takes place here.

Russów – a manor house which is a place of birth of Maria Dąbrowska (1889-1965) - the author of the four part novel “Noce i Dnie” (Nights and Days), which gave a base to a popular television series. At present the building is a branch of the Kalisz Museum. The exhibition presents the 19th century life in Wielkopolska villages and many memorabilia related to the novelist. In a nearby park you can find an open air exhibition of village constructions from Kalisz and its vicinity.

Kotłów – a small village situated on the slopes of high hills in the northern part of the so called Ostrzeszów Hills (Wzgórza Ostrzeszowskie). A Romanesque Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the second part of the 12th century, reconstructed many times. From Kotłów you can admire one of the most remarkable panoramas in Wielkopolska. The view embraces Prosna and Barycz Valleys.

Stawiszyn – a smallest town in Poland comprising a territory of slightly over 100 ha. It keeps an oval urban arrangement. The monumental Gothic St Bartholomew the Apostle Church of Kazimierz the Great Foundation. The tall and younger than the church tower is visible from a long distance. The tenement house with a clock tower is the most characteristic element of the well-kept market (Wolności Square).

the sanctuary in Licheń is the second biggest centre of religious cult in Poland, following only the Jasna Góra sanctuary. The most commonly visited places: the holy icon of Our Lady of Licheń, the place of revelation in the nearby Grąbliński Forest, a spring considered miraculous, stone mountain of Golgotha made by pilgrims, 25 m high the Way of the Cross, “Maria Bogurodzica”- the biggest in Poland 14.7 ton bell, organs which give musical frame to celebrations taking place in Licheń and last but not least the Basilica – a votive of Polish nation for the third millennium.

Ślesin – The triumphal arch situated at the road to Sompolno is the

present, with a huge flying buttress. In the first part of the 13th century the Cistercian Order of Nuns was established here and the present church building is its last remaining element. The Order was closed by the Prussian authorities. A small museum of church art and a cemetery with the 17th century shingled wooden parish church.

Kalisz – regarded as the oldest Polish city since the name “Kalisia” was discovered in the 2nd century writings of a scientist Claudius Ptolemy. Originally a merchants’ settlement on the Amber Road, under the rule of the Piast Dynasty Kalisz became one of the biggest strongholds. It was granted city rights in 1257. Before the Second World War the town was under strong Protestant and Jewish influence. Commercial growth of the city took place in the 15th and 16th century. The creation of the Duchy of Warsaw boosted another period of development, hindered only by a complete destruction of the city by the Prussian troops in 1914. The biggest attractions: the Main Market Square with a town hall, St Joseph’s sanctuary, St Nicholas’ cathedral, Wojciech Bogusławski Theater, “Dorotka” tower with remains of defensive walls, the oldest municipal park in Poland, monastery complexes: Franciscan and Jesuit (the latter one with the biggest illusionist polychrome in Europe) and an ancient cemetery located behind the former tollbooth.

– The Reformed Evangelical parish was established in Żychlin at the end of the 16th century as a commune of the Reformed Evangelical Church. It is the only reformed evangelical parish which has remained since the times of the Polish Reform Movement until today. The objects of the church complex, among others the 19th century Classical church and a wooden bell tower, compose a unified set of buildings and have been used appropriately until today. In the park you can find the Classical manor house of the Bronikowski family dated back to 1820. In September 1829 Frederic Chopin was a guest at the wedding reception of the village owner’s daughter Melania Bronikowska.

Konin – the old Konin boasts a Medieval arrangement of buildings which are concentrated around the market square (Wolności square). It was once crossed by a trade route from Kalisz to Toruń. A Classical town hall with a wooden tower dating back to the early 19th century can be admired at 3 Maja square. The clock was brought from the monastery in the nearby town of Ląd. Not far away you can find a Gothic St Bartholomew’s church from the late 14th century, with Art Nouveau polychromes and stained-glass windows in side naves, created by Eligiusz Niewiadomski-the man who assassinated president Narutowicz. In the front yard of the church, there is a sandstone pole dating from

1151, considered to be the first road sign in Poland. According to the inscription on this unusual monument it used to serve as a landmark indicating halfway between Kalisz and Kruszwica.

Licheń Stary – Taking into consideration the number of pilgrims,

most interesting attraction of Ślesin. It is called by the citizens “Brama Napoleona” (the Napoleonic Gate). The arch was erected in 1811 to honor the French Emperor of who crossed Ślesin 4 years earlier. This monumental structure was to welcome him again in 1812, after (how it was believed) the victorious Russian Campaign. Because of bad fate Napoleon did not see the construction at all.

Lake Ślesińskie - with the surface 152 ha and maximum depth 25 m, is a part of the Warta– Gopło Canal and a place for fishing. You can find here the following types of fish: bream, perch, sander, roach, ruff, stickleback, tench, rudd and chub. Steep banks are covered with trees decorating the picturesque landscape.

The Warta–Gopło Canal – the inland water way connecting the middle Warta with the upper Noteć by the ribbon of lakes. The canal is 32 km long and it has four locks. The canal was constructed in 1938-50 and at present it is used only for tourist purposes (pleasure boats, canoe trails).

The route is a treat for nature lovers. This trail will lead you away from people and civilization, close enough to see plenty of birds and other animals living in the boggy overflow areas of the Warta river. You can also visit a number of tourist attractions: a monastery in Pyzdry, Stary Konin, the remains of a concentration camp in Chełmno, a lovely town of Uniejów and the so-called „Sieradz Sea”, the largest inland water reservoir – Jeziorsko.

Pyzdry - a late-Gothic parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the second half of the 15th century. A frequently rebuilt 14th century Post-Franciscan monastery complex. The remains of a 14th century castle to the north of the monastery.

North to the market square, there is a late-Gothic church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating back to the 14th/16th century. We recommend to you also a visit to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary church in the Post-Franciscan Baroque monastery complex from the 17th/18th century in the Ostrówek district. The town boasts many relics of the past connected with its rich tradition of uprisings and two renowned personalities: Rev. Piotr Wawrzyniak – patron of the cooperative movement, and professor Heliodor Święcicki, the first chancellor of Poznań University, who was born in Śrem. In the town there is also the biggest Polish cast iron foundry.

Recommended tourist attractions

1994 to protect the area where the Lutynia river flows into the Warta river, with fragments of elevations such as the Żerków Flood Bank (164 m in the highest point). A varied shape of the land, vast views of the Warta overflow areas, covered with riparian and broadleaved forests.

Warta River Landscape Park - established in 1995 on the basis of the former Pyzdry Protected Landscape Area, founded a decade earlier. A nesting place for 150 species of birds, i.e. 65% of all breeding species in Poland.

Koło - a nicely preserved layout of the Medieval town, founded in the second half of the 14th century by King Kazimierz the Great. In the Old Market Square there is a town hall, originally Gothic, from the late 14th century, rebuilt in the first half of the 19th century in the Classical style. South to the market square you can see a Gothic 14th/15th century church of the Exaltation of the Cross, with a mid15th century gravestone of Jan of Grabów, a son of famous Zawisza Czarny (the Black Knight). In the neighbourhood you can find the Bernardines monastery complex dated back to the second half of the 15th century, rebuilt in the 18th century. The ruins of the Gothic castle of King Kazimierz the Great from the second half of the 14th century on the left bank of the Warta river, 2.5 km away from the centre of Koło. Chełmno nad Nerem

- a neo-Gothic church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating back to the second half of the 19th century, beautifully located on a high bank over the widespread Ner river valley. During the Nazi occupation the town was one of the five extermination centres in Poland; the others located in Auschwitz-Birkenau, Bełżec, Sobibór and Treblinka.

Uniejów - in the northern part of the Market Square there is a Gothic St Florian’s church from the mid 14th century, expanded in the mid 15th and mid 16th century. A mid 14th century castle, the former seat of Gniezno archbishops, on the left bank of the Warta river.

Jeziorsko Reservoir - a storage reservoir created between 1975 and 1986 in the central reaches of the Warta river, 22 km south-east of Turek. The largest artificial lake in Poland.

A picturesque path from Radojewo to Biedrusko

Along the Warta River

The western section of the Nadwarciańki Bicycle Trail (NSR-W), opened in 2009, is a successful extension of the eastern section (NSR-E) created four years earlier and described in a separate brochure. At present the whole route, marked uniformly blue, is 382km long and it leads along the Wielkopolska section of the Warta River. Although the western section is not much shorter than its eastern counterpart, it is considerably easier. However, it can surprise cyclers with unexpected difficulties. One Hundred Lakes Bicycle Trail can be an interesting alternative to NSR-W. (see: the relevant brochure) Distance:

Level of difficulty: mainly asphalt roads with little traffic, a few not very demanding uphill rides, during spring flooding Radojewo-Biedrusko and MokrzecMiędzychód sections may be impassable. Oborniki – the Holy Cross church

Stobnica – the estuary of the Kończak Canal, a former mill

Recommended tourist attractions Biedrusko – A palace constructed in 1877-80 for Albert von Treskow by Ludwik Huhn. The main entrance is placed in a side façade and you can find a porch and a staircase behind. A high tower with stepping façade and central vestibule lit by a skylight, the doors lead to the surrounding rooms. A landscape park with various trees (6 ha) spreads around the building. Nature Reserve „Śnieżycowy Jar” (Snowdrop Valley) – its uniqueness is marked every spring by blooming snowdrops. They grow in a large number covering a ravine falling towards a valley, on the banks of a brook. According to some sources the snowdrops were planted here at the end of the 19th century.

Oborniki – in Oborniki the Medieval urban arrangement of the old town can be observed with the streets leading to the main market square towards the crossing on the Warta river. The market was designed following the granting of town privileges. It preserves its original shape and a turbine plan of streets leading in pairs from each corner. Recommended churches: Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph’s church and the Holy Cross Church. Bąblin – it is famous in Poland and worldwide for the Missionaries of the Holy Family and their retreat house. The centre organizes meditation days, oasis meetings and rehabilitation meetings with purification treatment based on a fruit and vegetable diet.

Stobnica – Research Station of Zoology Department of Poznań University of Life Sciences created in 1974 in order to breed, restitute and reintroduce rare and endangered species of animals. Chojno – in the centre of the village you can see a neo-Baroque

- it starts in a parking lot at a forest road connecting Stobnica and Boruszyn. It is 7.7km long. It takes about 4-5 hours to walk it all. It is marked with a silhouette of a beaver according to PTTK standards.

church dating back to 1927. At the end of the 18th century, the borders of Notecka Forest were settled by the so-called Mazurzy Wieleńscy, who left behind a lot of wooden architectural traits.

Obrzycko – This town picturesquely situated on the left bank of the Warta River for ages has preserved the climate characteristic of small towns of Wielkopolska. Above the low buildings of the town three towers draw visitors' attention: St. Peter and Paul the Apostles church, a post-evangelical church, and the town hall. The Baroque St. Peter and Paul church is the oldest monument of the town. It was constructed between 1714 and 1756, according to the design of Pompeo Ferrari. However, it is the town hall that mainly attracts visitors in Obrzycko. On the southern façade of the building, at the first floor level, you can see marble windows dating back to 1527.

Bucharzewo – „Chata Zbójców” – (Outlaws’ Hut) the Centre for all-year events, camps and individual tourism. Since 1990, horse-riding and recreational camps for primary and secondary school pupils have been organized there.

Wronki – A large prison complex completed in 1894 is situated in Wronki. In the period between the world wars and in the years 194556, it used to be a political prison. During the German occupation, 800 prisoners were killed in there. Amica, a widely known Polish manufacturer of household appliances, is the biggest factory in the town. The monuments: St. Catharine parish church and Franciscan church. Wartosław – once a Town (city rights from 1785) with its original name Nowymost. It is arranged on a plan of three parallel streets connecting the market and the church from the east side. The town declined in the mid 19th century when the Prussian government limited the trade with customs barriers, in effect of which manufacturers lost their potential customers. In the village you can visit the Holy Trinity church built in 1785. In the western part of the village, there is a neo-Gothic Heart of Jesus church, a former evangelical church. On the south end of Lake Pożarowskie, there is a beach with recreational facilities.

established in 1991 to protect the landscape shaped by a glacier, with moraine hills, cut by numerous rivers and brooks. The tourist attractions around Sieraków include: a hilly area with numerous clear lakes. An abundance of interesting places friendly for hiking, cycling, canoeing and even car tourism. We recommend visiting the Stallion Stud, the Opaliński family castle and a former Bernardine parish church.

Sieraków – it is the centre of the Sieraków Landscape Park,

lake and a river. Setting out from one of the most picturesque markets in Wielkopolska, you can go to the Warta river and the lake. The town is also full of characteristic tenement houses and unique narrow streets, lanes called “gaski”, leading to the lake or to the Warta river. “Laufpompa” is another exceptional attraction. It is an artesian well in the shape of a cast-iron pump, about 90m deep. Its water has an unusual smell and medical value.

The Ring around Poznań is the first element of the Wielkopolska Bicycle Lane System and, at the same time, the local cyclists’ most favorite route. Its special structure in the shape of a bicycle wheel with seven spokes will help you plan more than a dozen unique and not very long trips which begin and end in the capital of Wielkopolska. Recommended tourist attractions Mosina – a major junction of cycle routes to the south of Poznań. An interesting Town Gallery in the former synagogue building, St Nicholas church dating back to 1852-54, a mansion from the second half of the 19th century. “Drążynek Lake” Nature Reserve – it protects a lake

Uzarzewo – a village on the northern bank of the Cybina river with a nearby Lake Uzarzewskie. St Nicholas church with Prussian walls dating back to 1749. It has hall architecture interior, Baroque decorations, a masonry chapel with a crypt of the founders – the Żychliński family, and a wooden tower from 1869. Inside the eclectic palace dating back to the second half of the 19th century there is a Museum of Natural Environment and Hunting, opened in 1977, with a rich collection of hunting trophies from all over the world. The palace is situated in the late 19th century landscape park designed by Augustyn Denizot.

Baroque church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Trzemeszno

– established in 1993, it encompasses over 2,000 hectares of postglacial land, with moraine hills, mixed forests and a few lakes. The park comprises several nature reserves. An abundance of rare plants, typical for boggy areas.

Pobiedziska – the name (from Russian pabieda – victory) is connected with the legendary victory of King Kazimierz the Restorer over Masław in a battle fought there. The town was plundered by Teutonic Knights in 1331. The town was often visited by King Władysław Jagiełło. At the eastern frontage of the foursided market square there is an early Gothic St Michael’s church with a wooden roof dating back to the 13th and 14th century,. In the interior of the church, late Gothic furnishings and interesting epitaphs. In the church walls there are mysterious holes which, according to a legend, were drilled with fingers as penance for sins. In fact, they are effects of fireworks lit at Easter.

Węglewo – the birthplace of Józef Kostrzewski (1885-1969), a renowned archeologist and Poznań University lecturer, a researcher of Biskupin. In the town, a wooden church from 1818 with Gothic furnishings.

Moraczewo

– a well-preserved stronghold proving that there were two settlements here – in the 8th and 10th century (destroyed during the invasion of Brzetysław in 1038). Two 18th century wooden windmills on the other side of the road.

Dziekanowice – old wooden structures from various parts of Wielkoolska were brought to the Wielkopolska Ethnographic Park created here in 1976. An eclectic St Martin’s church dating back

to 1865 with 19th century furnishings. About 2 km north-west to the trail there is the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica (a ferry to Ostrów Lednicki): remains of a palatium – residence of Prince Mieszko I and King Bolesław I the Brave.

Gniezno

– it used to be one of Poland's most important strongholds of the Piasts (the first royal dynasty). Otto III, German Emperor, visited Gniezno while on a pilgrimage in the year 1000. The town witnessed the coronation of Bolesław the Brave and Przemysł II. The Romanesque cathedral with St Adalbert’s relic in a silver coffin, Romanesque Gniezno Doors, many historic chapels, epitaphs, sculptures. It is definitely the most interesting building of historical significance.

Trzemeszno – It is believed that St Adalbert was the founder of St Benedict’s monastery in this town. Historical facts, however, prove that the complex, which from the very beginning was a property of St Norbert’s monastery, was established by a Polish king Bolesław Krzywousty in the first half of the 12th century. Nowadays there are only fragments of walls which remained after the original Romanesque and late Gothic temple. At present you can visit here a magnificent, three-nave, Baroque church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was built on the plan of a cross. The interior of the church reveals many architectural and artistic points of interest. Trzemeszno is also the birthplace of Jan Kiliński (1760-1819). He was a shoemaker, but history presents him as one of the main figures of the Kościuszko Insurrection. Jan Kiliński’s monument can be found in the square which took its name after him – Jan Kiliński Square.

A forest path in the vicinity of Ostroróg

Designed in 1999, the One Hundred Lakes Bicycle Trail is one of the oldest bike routes in Wielkopolska. The trail offers breathtaking views and leads you towards Międzychód-Sieraków Lake District, one of the most popular holiday destinations in this part of the country. The trail is linked to the international cycle trail “R-1” (Calais – Saint Petersburg).

Szamotuły - a former castle of the Szamotulski family from the second half of the 15th century, rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century by the Górka family. The Gothic shape was restored in 1976-89. A museum with castle furnishings dating to the 16th/18th century, a rich collection of icons. A museum with an ethnographic collection is situated in one of the late-18th century outbuildings. The so-called Halszka Tower from the 16th century, named after Halszka of Ostróg, the wife of Poznań Province Governor Łukasz Górka, imprisoned there by the cruel husband. In the nearby 19th century granary you can see an archeological exhibition with objects from the Yamal-Europe Gas Pipeline building sites.

A little further east you can find a stallion stable (“Stado Ogierów”) with a well equipped coach house surrounded by a 19th century landscape park with interesting trees.

Zajączkowo - a late Baroque manor house dating back to the late 18th century, which most probably replaced the former defensive settlement, situated on a peninsula by Lake Zajączkowskie. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century and converted into a leisure centre of the Poznań Department of Education in the 1980s. Łężeczki - farm buildings from the second half of the 19th century and a manor house dating back to the early 20th century. A panoramic viewpoint marked in 1994 on a postglacial hill by the road to Pniewy.

Chrzypsko Wielkie - A late Gothic St Adalbert’s church from 17th

the early century, with a wooden ceiling and furnishings dating back to the 17th and 18th century. The nearby lake under the same name as the village.

Sieraków Landscape Park - created in 1991 to protect the postglacial landscape of the eastern part of the MiędzychódSieraków Lake District. Numerous moraines, dunes, lakes, river valleys, and interesting forest. North to the Warta River you will mostly find sand dunes in the Noteć pine forest, and if you travel south – a considerably varied area with deep gully lakes, beech and mixed forests. Interesting nature reserves.

Chalin - a former manor house dating back to the mid 19th century, converted into the Environmental Education Centre in 1995, with an interesting nature exhibition, a big conference room and guest rooms. A landscape park around the house, offering three educational paths. Kamionna -a Gothic, late-15th century church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a single nave and a tower-shaped belfry. An interesting, three-level, ornamental gable on the east side.

Międzychód - east to the market square there is a St John the Baptist’s church from the late 16th century, originally late Gothic, altered in the 18th/19th century. In the church wall there is an interesting brick which presents a mask or a face. Across the street there is a pump which supplies water containing large quantities of sulfide and smelling in a characteristic way. A small Regional Museum at 17 Stycznia street. A late Classical post-evangelical church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary dating to the first half of the 19th century in Lipowiec street. Międzychód is an excellent starting point for all those who want to explore the Międzychód-Sieraków lake district and the Noteć Forest.

The trail leads from the capital of Wielkopolska to Okonek, the northernmost commune in the Province. Despite its considerable length, the route is easy because you usually travel on roads with little traffic. Cyclists can expect some occasional sandy sections, the longest of which is the one between Piła and Plecemin but it is also one of the most interesting sections in terms of its natural features. Brączewo - a village with a nice view to the Noteć Forest. You can use the bridge over a closed railway line towards the other bank of the Warta river, where, in Stobnica, you can find Zoology Department of Poznań University of Life Sciences research station which breeds endangered species of animals, such as wolves, Polish ponies, black grouses and capercaillies. An interesting natural path.

Daniele - a recreation center of the National Forest Company, with a wooden hut, a place for a bonfire and a car park in the forest. “Oak Forest,” an educational path in the adjacent nature reserve called “Świetlista Dąbrowa.” Obrzycko - the town has preserved its old arrangement of buildings with a market square in the shape of a trapezium, Prussian wall and brick-and-stone historic houses and a Baroque town hall from the second half of the 17th century. On the southern wall of the town hall there is a Renaissance window frame dating back to the 16th century, brought from Portugal in the mid 19th century.

Lubasz - a late Baroque church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the mid 18th century, with two chapels, two towers and Rococo furnishings. The Virgin Mary Sanctuary with a miraculous painting of the Snow Mother of God (Matka Boska Śnieżna) from the 16th/17th century. A resort and the LIMOSINUS beach by the lake. Czarnków - town buildings are located between a river and the edge of the Toruń-Eberswald Valley. A Gothic Mary Magdalene’s church from the second half of the 16th century situated in Wolności square. Next to it you can find an eclectic town hall dating back to the mid 19th century. The remains of a ski jump, a toboggan run and an amphitheatre can all be found in the Staszic Park. Trzcianka - a neo-Baroque St John the Baptist’s church from the early 20th century. A Regional Museum in Żeromskiego Street. North to the town, there is a leisure center with a beach and sports facilities by Lake Sarcz, which is beautifully surrounded by forests.

Piła - one of the “greenest” cities in Wielkopolska, surrounded by vast forests. In accord with the Treaty of Versailles this German town was returned to Poland in 1945, after fierce battles which destroyed the valuable Old Town almost completely. A neo-Gothic one-nave St Stanisław Kostka’s church from the late 19th century, an originally evangelical, neo-Baroque, three-nave Holy Family church dating back to the early 20th century, with a barrel vault and an interesting portal over the façade; St Antoni Paderewski’s church dating to 1929/30 with the biggest crucifix in Europe, carved from a single piece of wood (7 meters high). A museum with interesting natural exhibits At Browarna street two museums: the Local Museum (in the 19th century villa, which was a home to Polish Consulate between wars) and Stanisław Staszic Museum. A big leisure center with a lake beach by Lake Płotki, 7 km north-east of Piła. Płytnica - near the village you can find a railway bridge with two spans over the Gwda river. The retreating German troops blew up the bridgehead and seriously damaged the bridge pier. Tarnówka - post-evangelical church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the second half of the 18th century with a Baroque tower and Baroque furnishings.

Jastrowie - a few kilometers outside the town there are some picturesque remains of a railway bridge, blown up in 1945. Podgaje

- one of a few water-power plants on the Gwda river, built by German engineers before the Second World War.

Okonek - a small town on the banks of the Czarna river. A neoRomanesque church of Mother of God from Slaves from the mid 19th century with modern furnishings. A view tower on the top of Tecławska mountain (191 m), about 1km north from the town.

The northern track is full of forests and lakes, whereas the southern route is very different, with endless fields, valuable monuments and sites of historical and cultural interest. expanded in the early century. A neo-Gothic, former evangelical church from the second half of the 19th century turned into the Miłosław Regional Museum. A neo-Renaissance 19th century palace of the Mielżyński family surrounded by a 19th century English-style landscape park. In the park you can find the oldest Polish monument of Juliusz Słowacki (1899). In the nearby pheasantry you can find a former hunting castle dating back to the mid 19th century.

Level of difficulty: generally easy, mainly with asphalt roads; relatively difficult sandy sections from Tursko to Gołuchów and from Antonin to Ostrzeszów, demanding uphill rides to Żerków, Bałczyna and Kobyla Góra.

Żerków and Czeszewo Landscape Park - created in 1994. A part of the Warta river valley with forest nature reserves in the north and a considerably varied postglacial landscape (called “Żerków Switzerland”) in the south.

Koszuty - The Museum of Środa Region in a larch manor house dating back to the 18th century.

Środa Wielkopolska - a late Gothic, three-nave collegiate church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the first half of the 15th century. Between the railway line and the ring road of route 11 you can see overflow areas of the Średzka Struga river – a protected landscape area with 30 species of water fowl. A narrow-gauge railway station (the Środa Wielkopolska–Zaniemyśl line).

In the municipal park you can find the Prevention and Rehabilitation Center with a swimming pool built during the Nazi occupation.

Jarocin - an arcaded town hall dating back to 18th/19th century, with a Regional Museum inside. An early 18th century St Martin’s church, originally with a late Gothic, and, after alterations, Baroque architecture. A characteristic sundial. A neoGothic palace of the Radoliński family from the mid 19th century. In the neighborhood, a 19th century landscape park with a pond, amphitheater and remains of a medieval castle. Tursko - a sanctuary of the Holy Mother of God in a late Baroque St Andrew’s church from the second half of the 19th century. A basilica with three naves, a square-shaped tower, classical furnishings. It is a destination of pilgrimages: a miraculous painting of the Mother of God from Tursko, a colored woodcut from the second half of the 18th century, made by a folk artist.

Ostrów Wielkopolski - a Prussian wall post-evangelical church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland from the second half of the 18th century and with a neo-Romanesque tower dating back to the mid 19th century. Baroque furnishings with interesting two-level balconies. South-east of the church you can find a monumental, neo-Romanesque St Stanislaus’s parish church from the early 20th century with interesting furnishings, since 1922 it has been a counter cathedral of the Kalisz Diocese. Other places worth visiting: an old parish cemetery, a former synagogue building from the mid 19th century, “Komeda” – a modern cinema, and “Piaski-Szczygliczka” - a leisure park.

Gołuchów - a dendrological park – the biggest arboretum in Poland and the largest landscape park in Wielkopolska with a Renaissance castle from the mid 16th century, rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century by Izabela Dzialyńska nee Czartoryska in the style of castles on the Loire. South to the village – Gołuchów Lake with a beach, leisure center, campsite and sailing marina. A little farther in the forest – the biggest erratic block in Wielkopolska.

Kalisz - regarded as the oldest Polish city since the name “Kalisia” was discovered in the 2nd century writings of scientist Claudius Ptolemy. Originally a merchants’ settlement on the Amber Road; under the rule of the Piast Dynasty, Kalisz was one of the biggest strongholds, it was granted city rights in 1257. Before the Second World War the town was under strong Protestant and Jewish influence. Commercial growth of the city took place in the 15th and 16th centuries. The creation of the Duchy of Warsaw boosted another period of development, hindered only by a complete destruction of the city by the Prussian troops in 1914. The biggest attractions: the Main Market Square with a town hall, St Joseph’s sanctuary, St Nicholas’s cathedral, Wojciech Bogusławski Theater, “Dorotka” tower with remains of defensive walls, the oldest municipal park in Poland, monastery complexes: Franciscan and Jesuit (the latter one with the biggest illusionist polychrome in Europe) and an ancient cemetery located behind the former tollbooth. Droszew - a wooden All Saints church from the second half of the 18th century with a shingled roof. At the local cemetery – a tall, wooden crucifix with scenes of the Passion, and a sculpture depicting Adam and Eve by Paweł Bryliński, a famous folk sculptor.

Lewków - a classical palace of the Lipski family dating back to the late 18th century, thoroughly renovated. Rich stucco decorations and impressive paintings in the interior.

Antonin - a wooden classical hunting lodge from the first half of the 19th

Ostrzeszów - places worth visiting: a tall tower and a part of Medieval defensive walls, 14th century parish church of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Baroque post-Bernardine monastery dating from the 17th century, a wooden St Nicholas’ church from the mid-18th century, and a town hall dating back to 1840. An interesting Regional Museum. Parzynów - a wooden St Nicholas’ church from the second half of the 19th century with Renaissance furnishings. Kobyla Góra - the highest peak of Wielkopolska (284 m), the “Wielkopolska Cross” erected in 1999 to celebrate the millennium, made of metal and painted blue, 20 m high. Pólko - an impressive wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary called “Na Pólku”, dating from the early 18th century Siemianice - a neo-Romanesque church of St Giles the Abbot from the second half of the 19th century, with a crypt of the Szembek family. In the landscape park there is a palace housing the Forest Research Institute of Poznań University of Life Sciences.

Recommended tourist attractions Mosina - a major junction of cycle routes to the south of Poznań. An interesting Town Gallery in a former synagogue building, St Nicholas church dating back to 1852-54, a mansion erected in the second half of the 19th century. During the Springtime of Nations (1848) Mosina acted as the capital of independent Poland for a few days. A railway station.

Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park - created in 1992, mostly to protect a unique cultural and agricultural landscape formed in the mid-19th century by General Dezydery Chłapowski.

Racot - the National Stud Farm in Racot established in 1928. Nicely restored classicist palace from the late 18th century, with a conference and training centre. Kościan - since the year 1400 it has been the biggest – second only to Poznań – completely fortified town in Wielkopolska (the trail runs over the green belt leading along the so-called “channel of relief”, which surrounds the oldest part of the city – visible remains of medieval walls). We recommend visiting the market square with a late 18th century town hall (a Regional Museum inside), the Gothic parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 14th century, the Gothic Holy Spirit church dating back to the 15th century, and two old windmills.

Osieczna - a popular holiday resort by Lake Łoniewskie. A post-Reformation monastery complex of the Franciscans: a late Baroque St Valentine’s church from the 18th century and a Baroque monastery from the 17th century. In the vicinity there is a late-Gothic Holy Trinity church from the 16th century, rebuilt in the Baroque style. A 15th century palace now serving as a pediatric rehabilitation hospital. Three wooden windmills.

Leszno - an important centre of Protestantism and cloth production. Recommended attractions: an attractive Baroque and Classical town hall and interesting churches: a Gothic, catholic St Nicholas’ collegiate (a former evangelical Holy Cross church), a late Gothic, Catholic St. John the Baptist church, formerly the Unity of the Brethren church. A former synagogue dating back to the 18th century, at present Local Contemporary Art Gallery. A wide range of recreation centers: “Akwawit” water park, a stadium with a speedway track, glider airport and a small zoo.

Regional Museum, St. Andrew Bobola’s parish church from the early 19th century. In Rawicz there is also a top-security prison.

Golejewko - a breeding farm with thoroughbred English race horses. A mid 19th century palace erected for the Czarniecki family and surrounded by a park. An impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles and an alley with plaques dedicated to distinguished horses. A so-called transit gate topped with a bulbous helmet bearing a golden crescent, a trophy brought from the Battle of Chocim against Turks in 1620.

Pakosław - a classicist palace and park complex dating to the late

18th

century. A neo-Gothic church dating back to 1899 with coffin portraits and plaques bearing the coat of arms of the Zakrzewski family. The 15-km, yellow Honey Trail begins in Pakosław and runs through the most beautiful apiaries and beehives. An open-air bee-keeping museum is going to be created in Ostrobudki. You can buy honey and accessories for its production.

Turew - a Baroque palace and park complex of the Chłapowski family from the 18th century. A Research Station of The Institute for Agriculture, Forestry and the Environment of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Gostyń - the bourgeois tradition of Gostyń goes back to 1278 – to the rule of Przemysł II – which is manifested in the well-preserved Medieval arrangement of buildings. We recommend visiting the late Gothic St Margaret’s fara church from the 15th century and the Private Museum of Vintage Cars.

Głogówko - on Święta Góra (Holy Mountain), where an impressive monastery of the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri is located, you can visit Mother of Christ with the Child Sanctuary, one of the most frequented pilgrimage destinations in Wielkopolska. In the main altar of the church you can admire a painting depicting Mother of Christ with the Child and a rose, type Hodigitria, dating to 1540. The church is a part of a monastery complex.

Pępowo - an estate of Gniezno archbishops since 1136. A village famous for breeding the Wielkopolski horse. Gothic St Jadwiga’s church from the 15th century with a characteristic tower resembling a fortified castle. Near the village there is a palace complex of the Mycielski family dating back to 1780 (currently a private property).
