The 1947 comprehensive plan defined St. Louis as a metropolitan structured by the mass transportation system. However, the highway is designed for vast vehicle connections, it is a boundary splitting the city on a neighborhood scale without having any interaction with the urban context. Forest Park Southeast is a community adjacent to urban amenities and facilities such as Forest Park and Wash U medical campus in midtown St. Louis, but it is also absolutely isolated because of the I-64 in between. In this project, a double-layered landscape bridge hovers over the highway and connects the pedestrian and bikers from the neighborhood to the university and the park. The project explores a new understanding of infrastructure, which is not as a transportation system, but as an extension of the landscape, a new form of urbanism.
METROPOLITAN WITH INFRASTRUCTURE
The history of St. Louis is case studies for the infrastructural development of a modern metropolis. The 1947 comprehensive plans defined the city as a metropolitan structured of the automotive transportation system with the booming of industry, thus brough mass highway construction. However, designed for cars but not people, the highway is more like an artificial boundary in a community scale, cut the city into segments like "islands”, and bring equity, economic and urban renewal challenges.

Great Rivers Greenway, a locally based government agency in St. Louis proposed the ongoing Brickline Greenway project aims to establish greenway trails connecting St. Louis landmarks, neighborhoods and communities. The Forest Park Southeast (FPSE) community is an important node locates at the starting point of this greenbelt but isolated by highway I-64 & I-44 on north & south.

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT
Focused on the northwest corner of the FPSE, the penetration point is the community, highway, park, and university relationship. The original pedestrian bridge over I-64 is transformed into a layered landform bridge to connect the different elevations across the highway and communicate all the flows to different ends. The project intends to reconnect the neighborhood as well as reactivate the energy by promoting share, prosperity, inclusion, participation, and joy of nature.

The roof floor works as a rising and extending landform across the highway, connecting the community, the university, and the park. Organized by pedestrian and bicycle paths, the bridge merges with the landscape as the entrance is rising as a garden. Some of the site's original trees were kept as an intersection to bring nature amenities to the structure.

URBAN LANDFORM
The proposal is to explore a new understanding of infrastructure basing on the idea of urban landform, which can be the next adaptive co-management direction and solution for community transportation system. In terms of the scale, the new infrastructure is not a vast connector for cars anymore - it is designed under a localized scale, focusing on neighborhood condition and designate for short distance transportation by building human friendly walking & biking trails and offering related facilities. In terms of the function, the infrastructure is designed to enhance the idea of a compact community. Parks, arts districts, transit corridors, cultural and educational institutions, public spaces, community business & service are all integrated.

BRIDGE FLOOR
Organized by a highway atrium in the center, the bridge floor is an open infrastructure serving as a compound including multiple programs of both indoor and outdoor activities. A public library locates in the north, serving both the university and the community. Highway observation playgrounds are in both the atrium and an enclosed pavilion. The tree pits sheltered by metal mesh also serve as gathering spaces on this floor.

STUDY MODEL & BRIDGE SPACES
Inspired by the study model of "layers", the two rubber layer is translated as steel bridge decking with growing media to keep the elastic condition of nature, the entangled surfaces form flowing interior spaces and atriums. Another study model uses wood strips to mimic the people flow along the bridge, and the topo flow of the site condition, thus helps the understanding of the connection & overall structural layout. Starting at researching the “central room” from medieval European residential typology, this project tried to represent this historical concept in a modernism way and utilize it to maximize the flexibility in every dwelling unit at the historically rich city Santiago de Compostela.

Santiago de Compostela is a historical religious city with a hilly landscape and distinctive building style. One traditional architecture element used here, called “Galleria”, is an overhanging curtain wall system usually installed at the higher level facade of dwelling buildings.

"CENTRAL ROOM" AND FLEXIBILITY
In 19c, the modernism wave brings the concept of “form follows function”. However, the high-efficiency design and fixed-function plan usually fall into the trap of specializing the rooms by giving them the sizes in proportion to their functions, limiting the flexibility in dweller usage. Starting at the research on the “central room” idea in a dwelling project from medieval Europe, this project tried to represent this historical concept in a modernism way and utilize it to maximize every dwelling unit’s flexibility.

3 THE IDEA OF "CENTRAL ROOM"
The room in the center has an obscure, undefined function. But it has enough space to hold any function that the dweller thinks is the most important, which should be the center of their life. The dweller can also adjust the four surrounding main rooms and the room between main rooms accordingly to maximize the flexibility. Together with the double-layer “galleria system”, the whole project offers an elastic, energy saving, and exceptional living experience.

e of a building is never a simple envelope. The exterior “galleria” system serves as both a balcony space and a rainfall shelter, and it can also an in-between room to have flexible functions. The inner wall with continuous opening serves as the second layer - with the exterior glazing d interior wood doors, the user can adjust it for various ventilation and lighting needs during different seasons. These two layers altogether as a passive thermal device to improve the interior climate.

Archigram’s instance city project reveals the fact that Architecture’s nature as a connector between individual and community. In Sweden, the aging population and the low birth rate have been a significant problem for the whole society, to reconnect people with community and city is the key role that architecture plays here. By understanding architecture as an intermediate, this project tries to discuss the new relationship between the individual and city, as well as rethink a new type of urban commune dwelling.
THE MARIAHISSEN
The Mariahissen was originally a lift between higher and lower Urban Levels on Stockholm riverside. Through the relief model study, understanding the building an urban connector, the reform focuses on creating the public spaces inside the architecture and connecting people, city and nature.
3 THEMES
The 3 relief model & sketch studies: connection, nude and light serve as the toolkit of the typology that reconfiguring the existing structure as an urban commune with “flow”, “void” and “megastructure” as the 3 themes in this transformation. The model collage and the study model reveal the possibility of combing & intersecting these themes in 2D and 3D.

ARCHITECTURE AS INTERMEDIATE
The “void” is revealed as “bubbles” and the “megastructure” becomes the framing structure. These public atriums are enclosed by the semi-transparent membrane. On one side, bubbles are public spaces soaked in the solution of residential units and their surrounding in-between spaces, which bring the people out of their dwelling chamber to live and work together. On the other side, the bubbles connect multi outside levels and break them through inside the building, leading the “flow” - visitors and sunlight into the project.

FLEXIBLE LIVING CHAMBERS
The floorplan is organized surrounding the public voids. Public working, dining, entertainment, leisure spaces are all included inside or outside the bubbles. Long stairway serves as both transportation and gathering spaces among levels, and the existing lift in the center is transformed as an open lift to give movability of the living chambers.
FLEXIBLE LIVING CHAMBERS
The private part, the residential chamber is designed as moveable, independent pre-fabricated furniture. With changeable modularized elements, it can meet the essential requirement of private living with flexibility. With an opened lift inside the building, it can move to anywhere they want inside the building, gather as an ethnic group, and plug-in at the ceiling for water supply and drainage.

RE-URBANIZATION
The “Re-Urbanization” idea intends to bring all the different living experiences back into the heart of the city - Chicago Lakeshore to re-grant citizens the right to choose their own life. The tower's volume is gradually shrinking from lower level to higher to accommodate different living concepts, thus create four main zones. The overall structural & MEP system is designed based on this zoning idea. With a rigid frame tube in the center, the whole tower is braced with the belt trusses where the mechanical floor locates.

The Distributed Tri-Generation System can help the building transform energy from the city natural gas resource into electric power. Simultaneously, utilize the released heat in the heat recovery boiler for heating or in the absorption chiller for cooling. The systems are designed according to the “zoning” idea - they’re distributed on every mechanical floor and serve independently for each zone. Thus, the system can balance the energy income and output in different zones.
