Buying an engagement ring? Wright marshall’s jewellery specialist Francesca Garvey talks you through what to look for when buying an engagement ring…
B
uying a diamond should be an unforgettable and exciting experience, especially if you are buying for a loved one! The most important aspect to consider are the 4 C’s; carat weight, cut, colour and clarity. Each of these elements together enable the true worth of a diamond to be justified. The creation of the Diamond 4C’s meant two very important things: diamond quality could be communicated in a universal language, and diamond customers could now know exactly what they were about to purchase.
Colour The colour of the diamond is hugely important when it comes to purchasing a diamond. The colour scales begins with the letter D, meaning colourless and rarest stones, with increasing colour through to Z. Diamonds graded M – Z are noticeably off-white or tinted and can display obvious yellow or greyish hues. At the upper end of the scale, the subtleties between exceptional and rare white colours are virtually indistinguishable to the naked eye. Commercial white of G – J colour, are still beautiful stones without breaking the budget. The metal used in the setting and also the shape of the stone itself, may enhance or emphasise the colour of the stone. 4
Artificially treated fancy coloured diamonds such as yellow, green, blue, pink and black colours are readily available at a fraction of the price of their natural counterparts Carat Weight It is important to note that extra carat weight does not always equate to extra beauty! Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear visually different in size due to the overall proportions of the stone. A 0.50ct modern round brilliant-cut diamond should have a diameter of approximately 5.1mms. If the stone has a smaller diameter it is likely to be deeper or thicker in proportion. This will reduce the amount of light reflected back out of the diamond and consequently affect its
‘sparkle’. In addition, it is important to note that diamond prices increase hugely. The most significant increases occur at the full and half carat intervals, i.e. a 1.01ct diamond will cost more per carat than a 0.97ct stone, if all the other factors are equal. For another reference, one carat equals 0.20grams. Cut A diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamonds’ facets interact with light, often confused as simply the shape of the finished diamond (pear, round emerald). Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry, and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.

Clarity
The cut can be considered as separate characteristics: • finish – is the overall polish • s ymmetry/ proportions - both qualities affect the sparkle • o utline shape - a diamond cut with near perfect proportions will always sparkle, regardless of the shape. The modern round brilliant-cut is one of the most popular cuts today and if it is well cut it will be lively and full of fire. However, if the
diamond is poorly cut the value of the stone can be affected by more than 40% and the beauty of it. The Diamond Cut Scale for standard round brilliant diamonds in the D-to-Z diamond colour range contains 5 grades ranging from Excellent to Poor. There are many types of cut available today, ranging from fancy-cuts to timeless traditional ones, when cut to the correct proportions all cuts have their own merits and can look fantastic in the right setting.
A stone is said to be flawless if, under 10-power magnification, no natural internal flaws and no external imperfections are visible. At the top of the scale, absolutely flawless diamonds are exceedingly rare and priced accordingly. Included stones are far more common, they can appear to be clean to the naked eye with many inclusions only being detectable on much closer inspection. Prices drop dramatically for diamonds with imperfections, especially when they compromise the durability or path of light through the stone. If you are considering purchasing a diamond or selling one why not start at Wright Marshall. Come along for an informal chat with their Jewellery Specialist.
