95A An extremely rare Maine Guano art bottle, dated 1884 28.5cm bottle, decorated with multi coloured bands and initials T. R. M. further inscription Lobos de Afuera Mzo 17 1884 and John Trahey, lower section with decoration of a ship approaching rocky outcrop with a flag pole flying the French flag. NB: The worlds best quality guano was found in the Chincha Islands off the coast of Peru. Provenance: The bottle came to the UK in 1950s, a young sailor from Bangor, Wales who sailed on the SS Corinthian out of Liverpool to New York was gifted it by his Aunt who he had met for the first time when he docked in New York. It was something she wanted him to have, so he brought it back with him to Bangor and gave it to his mother, who was his Aunts sister, thence by descent. According to the Penobscot Marine Museum who loaned their bottle to the Smithsonian they had no doubt that this bottle was the identical bottle to theirs. The name on the bottle John Trahey refers to a ship building company based in the 1880s in Nova Scotia. This bottle could be named after one of the flag ships for this company or gifted to the owner of the company who built the Guano recovery ships for the United States of America. Also included in this lot is some research regarding the very similar bottle at Penobscot Marine Museum

EXPLANATION OF CATALOGUING TERMS - PICTURE SECTION
The Artist’s Resale Right Regulations
Any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition is a statement of opinion and is not to be taken as a statement of fact. Wright Marshall Ltd reserves the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority considered by them to be reliable.
Following the introduction of the Artist’s Resale Right Regulations on 14th February 2006 and subsequent revisions on the 1st of January 2012 Frank Marshall will implement the new levy as follows:
1 A picture catalogued with the forename(s) and surname of the painter is in our opinion a work by the artist. When the artist’s forenames(s) is not known, a series of asterisks, followed by the surname of the artist, whether preceded by an initial or not, indicates that in our opinion the work is by the artist named.
Frank Marshall will collect the same amount as the resale royalty from the buyer for any work of art covered by the regulations. Royalty rates will only apply to works sold in the secondary market and not for those sold for the first time, and for works which are sold for €1000 or more (approx £780 hammer price). Royalty rates are calculated as a percentage of the sale price on a sliding scale from 4% (from €1000 to €50,000) down to 0.25% (over €500,000).
2 ‘Attributed to’ is in our opinion probably a work by the artist but less certainty as to authorship is expressed than in the preceding category.
Resale royalties ARE NOT subject to VAT.
3 ‘Studio of’ is in our opinion a work by an unknown hand in the studio of the artist which may or may not have been executed under the artist’s direction
Important Notice to Buyers:
5 ‘Style of’ is in our opinion a work by a painter working in the artist’s style, contemporary or nearly contemporary, but not necessarily his pupil.
Buyers are requested to acquaint themselves with the revised Terms of Sale and Notices. Particular note should be taken of the 17.5% plus VAT Buyer’s Premium which is payable to the Auctioneers in addition to the hammer price on each and every lot. The lots in this sale are of some age and buyers are advised to satisfy themselves of the condition of each lot before bidding. Please note that phone bidders must be prepared to bid to the lower estimate in order to secure a line.
6 ‘Manner of’ is in our opinion a work in the style of the artist and of later date.
Buyers Registration:
7 ‘After’ is in our opinion a copy of a known work of the artist.
Please note that in order to comply with current Money Laundering regulations Wright Marshall Ltd will perform an ‘Anti Money Laundering’ check on all new clients, should a buyer fail to supply sufficient information to perform this check or if they fail to meet the necessary criteria to pass this check then their registration will be refused.
4 ‘ Circle of’ is in our opinion a work by an as yet unidentified but distinct hand, closely associated with the named artist but not necessarily his pupil.
8 The terms ‘signed’ and/or ‘dated’ and/or ‘inscribed’ means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription are from the hand of the artist
44
9 The term ‘bears a signature’ and/or ‘date’ and/or ‘inscription’ means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription have been added by another hand
