54RIVER STREET Reimagining highway development in Eureka, Kansas

SMALL TOWN STUDIO

Reimagining the Commercial Strip

MAIN STREET

AMBIGUOUS BLOCKS

RESIDENTIAL SWATH

WESTERN GATEWAY

The Small Town Studio, a fifth year thesis studio, has spent the year working in Eureka, Kansas, a small town in the southern Flint Hills. The town of 2500 is emblematic of many of the rural farming communities that have been slowly dieing since World War 2. Our task has been to identify and rectify the causes of this slow death. My area of study has been the commercial strip along Highway 54 as it passes through town. Cheap, low density commercial strips can be found along the edges of almost every American town and city, and the ubiquity of these conditions is what attracted me to the area.

54ADAMS HOUSING

RIVER STREET MARKET

COMMERCIAL STRIP

EASTERN SUBURBS

EASTERN GATEWAY

My project spans a number of scales. Initial analysis of the in-town stretch of highway led to a set of design guidelines for businesses looking to develop a site. Two architectural projects, the River Street Market and the 54Adams community housing project, aim to demonstrate what healthy development can look like in the most blighted area of the strip. This structure - an umbrella analysis/proposition under which sits two “case study projects - was very well received in critiques. My project was chosen to represent my studio in the prestigious 5th year Heintzelmann competition.

Communal Courtyard While the street facades feature several small windows, the units open to the courtyard with an eight foot curtain wall. The courtyard provides a space for recreation, socializing, and barbecuing against a wooded backdrop. With five individual units, the community of 54Adams is small, and with a pleasant common area, can be tight-knit. The courtyard invites residents to come together, and the inner, partially glazed facades forces a certain level of intimacy and mutual trust among the residents.

Courtyard Section

54Adams One of the many problems afflicting small rural communities has been colloquially termed the “brain drain”. Young, educated talent leaves town, never to return. The 54Adams housing complex offers contemporary living, with the intent of enticing young people to return to their hometown. The 54ADAMS housing project is designed to introduce a new type to the existing housing stock in Eureka. As the town attempts to entice younger people to move and work in town, smaller contemporary housing options can offer an alternative, communal quality of life. The apartment units work with four core tenets: a communal, courtyard orientation, a non-confrontational form based on the archetypical “housing” form (square + pediment), an interior armature that provides necessary shelving and furniture, and a single, lofted interior volume.

Courtyard Rendering

Site Plan

Interior Armature For many young people, the idea of buying a dining room table or an armoire is as restrictive as buying a house. In a tight apartment plan, even modestly sized furniture can feel overwhelming. An armature of built in shelving, a desk, and a dining table eases this dilemma. Beyond providing the necessary furniture and program elements, the shelving is able to spatially separate the kitchen from the dining and living space while retaining sight lines and the feeling of continuous space. While the exterior of the units is kept relatively plain, the wood interior armature serves as the visual interest and compelling parti of the project.

River Street Market Eureka sits on rich, fertile ground, surrounded by farm and ranch land; yet there is little opportunity for residents to buy the product of the land. The River Street Market, a project proposed by Larry and Susan Cook, aims to confront public conceptions of physical and economic health, and by renovating an abandoned gas station according to the design guidelines I created, address the visual blight of the commercial zone surrounding the site. The design can be broken into three phases to be developed as the business proves itself to be economically viable: _Gutting the gas station to its CMU structure and installing the new facade, made from reclaimed barnwood. _The creation of the front porch, a common vernacular typology and important liminal space. _The development of the out building into a cafe, and the construction of the overhead shading that defines the outdoor patio space. The River Street Market, through its design and goods, has the potential to transform Eureka, providing nutritious food, a local investment, and good placemaking to the community.

At the end of the year, the Small Town Studio presented the entirety of its work in a book, Design for the Campestral. The 200+ page publication was a gratifying culmination to a years worth of hard work. With my experience working on the Oz Journal, I played a leading role in the design and publication of the book. Alongside my thesis work, I provided the graphics and photographs for the cover and leading pages.

While interning at Helix, I worked on a project to create a meeting area and showroom on the factory floor of a HVAC company. The project was well suited to my brief time there, as I was able to see it through all stages of development. I attended client meetings and site visits, and was solely responsible for the Revit model and drawings. ::

Located in the arid mountains of Syria, over an hour from any major city, the Deir Mar Musa Monastery attracts pilgrims and tourists alike, though it lacks the proper accomodations for a longer visit. The pilgrimage center seeks to provide accomodation as well as education for visitors to the monastery. Program is split between the three components of the design: the northern building houses a library, a gallery, and a multipurpose space. The southern building provides five small apartments and a communal dining room for pilgrims looking to stay overnight. And lastly, the courtyard serves as an informal meeting space for the hike up to the monastery.

The Park Avenue Disconnect Pavilion offers a space away from electronic distraction. The pavilion is clad in lead panelling, effectively blocking radio waves and WiFi signals, and the skylight is coated with indium tin oxide reflecting radiation. The complex revetment incorporates reentrant triangle geometry to deflect radio signals and dissipate their energy. Seagrams Plaza is an ideal installation venue, offering electronic respite for passersby.
