Clint Stoerner

The Whole Story By Eli Cranor Clint Stoerner was born in Texas, and that was the first obstacle he had to overcome in his career. Texas and Arkansas have endured a longtime rivalry, especially when it comes to football. But Stoerner, a standout Texas quarterback, chose Arkansas, and the state has taken him in and made him one of its own. Stoerner was the quarterback for the Hogs during the 1997, 98, and 99 seasons, a time that many claim restored the sport of football in Arkansas. During his time, he set single game records for pass attempts (52 against Alabama in 1999), pass attempts in a season (357 in 1997), career pass attempts (1,023), career pass completions (528), passing yards in a game (387 against LSU in 1997), passing yards in a season (2,629 in 1998), touchdown passes in a season (26 in 1998), career touchdown passes (57) and consecutive passes without an interception (134). Stoerner also went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys for four seasons, and started two games in the 2001 season. Today, Stoerner is a successful businessman in the Little Rock area. But each one of these successes has their own obstacles, and it was the process of overcoming these obstacles that made Stoerner the man he is today. Clint started playing football at the age of five. “I had an older brother who was two years older than me, but I was bigger than him, and big for my age, so I played up in his league,” Stoerner says. In those early days, Clint played running back and linebacker for the Optimus League Ponies. Because of Stoerner’s size, he was able to dominate at a young age. “I can remember just dragging guys when I was running the ball, but I didn’t really like to get hit. I actually hated hitting anyone or being hit, so that really only left one position for me,” Stoerner says. That position was quarterback, and up until his junior year, Clint Stoerner honed his craft as a football quarterback. Going into Stoerner’s junior year he had grown

as an opportunity to learn more about how receivers were thinking, and in the end, it made me a better quarterback.” Clint must have been taking notes, because by the end of his high school career he was highly ranked among Texas quarterbacks. He even started for the Texas team in the Texas-California All-Star game. “I ended up having a pretty good high school career, and I have Dick Olin to thank for a lot of that,” Stoerner says. “Coach Olin was my high school coach and he really believed in me, and he promised me that if I stuck with him, he’d get me a Division 1 scholarship. I didn’t really believe him, but he kept his word.”

accustomed to playing quarterback. However, before that season, Clint would face the first true obstacle in his football career, and how he responded to this obstacle would shape the rest of his life.

When recruiting season came around, Clint was in more of a demand than he could have ever expected, and Coach Olin’s promise of a Division 1 scholarship had come to fruition. He visited Vanderbilt, Kansas, and LSU, and was offered scholarships by all three. But none of those felt like home for Stoerner. However, from the moment he stepped foot on Arkansas’s campus, something was different. “From my very first visit there I fell in love with everything. The guys I met on my visit were great and we really hit it off.” Another reason Clint was so intrigued by the prospect of playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks was that he was truly needed. “I remember going up into the coaches office and looking down at the field. The team was practicing and I was watching, and I remember thinking that I could play ahead of the guys that were there,” Stoerner says. As Stoerner was getting ready to leave, a coach pulled him into his office and simply told him that he was needed, and that was all Clint needed to hear. “After I heard that I went right back into Coach Ford’s office and told him by myself that this is where I wanted to come to college,” Stoerner says. The rest, as they say, is history. Stoerner would go on to become one of the Hogs’ most prolific passers and an icon around the state of Arkansas, but not before he would have to overcome another massive hurdle, and this one would be even bigger than before.

That year it was going to be best for the team for Clint to play wide receiver. “That was really tough at first,” Stoerner says, “but after I thought Going into the 1998 season, the Razorback football team knew something was about it awhile, I knew that was where I was the most needed. I took that year different. “We had just hired Coach Nutt, and he was so different from Coach Ford,”

Stoerner says, “Everything was different: the coaches’ attitudes, the players’ touchdown, and went on to win the National Championship. Arkansas would attitudes, practices schedules, just everything. Until that point we had been finish the season 9-3. trained to just beat on each other, and then Coach Nutt came in and we relaxed “I had to take the blame and move on, that’s just the way I was raised,” Stoerner and played football.” says. “And honestly the only thing that was on my mind were my teammates. I The new attitude towards Razorback football transpired to the field, and the felt like I had let my teammates down. Of course there were bigger implications Hogs went on an epic 8-0 run. In their ninth game, they faced off against the to this game, but that’s not what I was thinking about. I wasn’t thinking about the top-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. “Really, the game against Tennessee was fans, the rankings, or the coaches. I was just thinking about my teammates, and no different,” Stoerner says. “It was a big game, and people were very excited that group of seniors, that would never get to play Tennessee again, and I was worried that I had let them down. That was my only regret.” about it, but Nutt did a good job about keeping it all suppressed.”

“I had to take the blame and move on, that’s just the way I was raised,” says Stoerner.

The game started, and things were going just as the Razorbacks had hoped. They were playing right along with the top ranked team in the nation, and it felt like just another game for the Hogs. “It was the best college football game that I’d ever played in,” Stoerner says. “I remember thinking we’d arrived, that we were beating the tar out of the best team in the nation. Things were going just about as good as they could. For the first time, I thought we had a pretty good team.”

Stoerner faced this obstacle with the same will and determination as he had earlier obstacles in his life. He took a businesslike approach to his football career and went to work. “I was so worried about throwing the hitch route on the up-field shoulder and hitting the receiver in stride that I didn’t really have time to think about all the other things going on,” Stoerner says. There was no point in worrying about the past, and Clint’s work would pay off, when the Razorbacks faced the Volunteers again in 1999.

Then it happened.

“We had really high hopes for that season,” Stoerner says. “Things didn’t go as planned early on, so we kind of had the Tennessee game circled for a long time.”

With 1:43 left to play, the Razorbacks needed to only make one first down to solidify the win over the top ranked Volunteers. But Stoerner stumbled coming This time around, the Volunteers were again ranked amongst the top five in the out from under center and fumbled the ball. Tennessee recovered, scored a nation and had hopes of another National Championship. Down 24-21 late in the

fourth quarter Clint found his favorite target, Anthony Lucas, in the end zone to put the Hogs up 28-24. The defense held, and the Razorbacks ended the Volunteers Championships hopes by the same exact score that they had been beaten by a year before. Stoerner completed 18 passes on 28 attempts for three touchdowns and over 300 yards passing. “That game was the one time in my entire career that I really felt pressure. To me, there was no other outcome for that game other than winning. Everyone played great, it all came together, and we won,” Stoerner says.

or like my arm wasn’t strong enough. It was such a business and they put all their chips where there money is invested, and it wasn’t invested in me,” Stoerner says. But even after Stoerner’s football career, he wasn’t done building teams and being successful. And getting over the fact that there would be no more football would prove to be his final obstacle. “Now I’m so interested in building a team and building a successful, strong business that it’s really kind of taken the place of football, and that has taken a long time,” Stoerner says. “I look forward to winning in the business world and being recognized for that.”

Needless to say, this moment would forever define Clint Stoerner’s life, and his reaction to this moment is a lesson that he’ll never forget. “When we won, I thought I wanted that game more than anyone because I was the one that dropped the ball and it all happened to me. But that wasn’t the case. Everyone wanted it, and it showed,” Stoerner says.

Now that Clint is working to establish his company, Stoerner and Havas Insurance Agency, he can look back and see just how football and the obstacles that it presented molded him into the man that he is today. “It’s human nature when something bad happens to think the worst, but from all of those situations I’ve learned not to over react. And that goes with the good and the bad. I’ve learned After his college career, Clint never thought he would continue to play football. to be a good manager of people. It’s all about reactions. Sports have taught me But he did. “I look up one day, and I’m playing for the Dallas Cowboys, America’s how to live and deal with life, and that’s all that I could have ever asked for,” team, and I realized that I didn’t ever even think that I would get the chance to Stoerner says. play Division 1 football. I knew right then that I truly got the most out of what I had,” Stoerner says. As a culture we spend billions of dollars on organized sports each year. In fact, in 2011 the sports industry more than doubled the revenue of the automobile Clint played for five seasons in the NFL, four with the Cowboys and one with the industry. Some people would look at this statistic and wonder, “why”? Miami Dolphins. He started two games in 2001 for the Cowboys, but was later released. “I never really felt like I belonged in the NFL. I always felt undersized Clint Stoerner’s story might be the best possible answer to that question. From a young age, a boy was taught about meeting obstacles and overcoming them. Through football, Clint was taught what it meant to succeed and what it meant to fail. If we know anything about life, we know that it comes with its share of good and bad times, and the only thing that people can control is how they react to these times. Through the game of football, Clint Stoerner was taught to put others above himself, to take responsibility for his actions, and to know how to work with people effectively. “In the end, sports actually define me to a certain extent,” Stoerner says. “Sports are the most important factor in making me who I am today.” In life, everyone has their own obstacles to overcome, but it’s how we respond to those obstacles that make us who we are. Clint Stoerner made the most out of his successes and his failures in order to be the man that he is today.

After a combined 22 wins and one conference championship in the previous two seasons, the Bald Knob Bulldogs faced high expectations in 2011. The pressure, coupled with a struggling defense, contributed to the Bulldogs’ four-game losing skid to start the season, including competitive losses to Pocahontas (28-21) and Newport (66-57), and blowout losses to Heber Springs (55-19) and Earle (62-20).

Junior Malachi Watson (6’0, 201 lbs) carries the load at running back, rushing 41 times for 338 yards and two touchdowns last year. He fills the hole left by graduated leading rusher Tyler Gilmore.

But the Bulldogs rallied midway through the season to win three in a row before losing three of their last four games to finish the year with a 4-7 record. “We did not do as well as I thought we could do,” head coach Paul Johnston says in regards to last season. “We’re going to have to learn from our mistakes.”

Bald Knob’s offensive line is unproven, and coach Johnston has worked on improving their fundamentals throughout the offseason. Junior left tackle Cory Carter, junior left guard Brady Zomant (6’1, 265 lbs), senior center Cody Davis (6’0, 175 lbs), and senior right tackle Joe Stelly (5’10, 200 lbs) comprise the line. Following a three-win season in 2009, the Beebe Badgers have returned to form in recent years. They won six games in 2010, and won seven last year despite suffering from streaky play throughout the season. They lost the season opener to Greenbrier before winning four straight. After their loss to Wynne, the Badgers won two out of their next four to make the playoffs. Beebe edged out Watson Chapel 54-48 in the first round before losing to Camden Fairview.

PANTHERS A Fresh Start

Cabot Panthers Conference: 7A/6A East Head Coach:Mike Malham Years as Head Coach at school: 5 Record at School: 249-110-4

For a program as successful as the Cabot Panthers’, the 2011 season was drastically out of character. But Cabot joins the 7A East for the 2012 season, and the new conference promises both tough opponents and a fresh start for the Panthers.

Junior Kason Kimbrell inherits the starting quarterback job. He enjoyed a productive offseason and threw well in the 7-on-7 tournament this summer. Backup quarterback Grant Bell posted a polished performance in the tournaments as well. The junior completed eight passes on 17 attempts for 89 yards and two touchdowns in a day of play.

Senior Brandon Boatright starts at tight end. Junior Keith Pledger is a member of the wrestling team, and brings the same physicality to the tight end position opposite Boatright.

Senior center Zach Calhoun benches 265 pounds and was named an Academic all-Conference player. “He’s small but he’s scrappy,” Malham says. Junior duo Martin Turner and Chris McTague start at the two tackle positions. Strong junior Alec Ramirez throws shot-put in addition to handling blocking duties at guard. Heath Pledger, the twin of Keith Pledger, works at the other guard position. Cabot returns five starters to a defense which allowed an average of 42 points per game last season, but Malham sees the squad as much improved going into the fall. “We weren’t that good in the secondary last year,” he says. “We gave up a lot of big plays. If we stop giving up the home run, we’re going to be tough to beat.”

YELLOW JACKETS The Road to Success The Clinton Yellowjackets won seven games in the 2011 season on their way to a playoff birth. They defeated Maumelle 56-21 in the first round, before a very good Pottsville Apache football team defeated the Yellowjackets 49-16 in the second round.

Clinton Yellow Jackets Conference: 4A-2 Head Coach: Chris Dufrene Years as Head Coach at school: 11 Record at School: 69-51 Athletic Director: Chris Dufrene Football Staff: Joe Hudon – Defensive Coordinator/ Linebackers Lance Campbell – Offensive Line Defensive Ends Jessie Wilson – Receivers/Defensive Backs 2011 Overall / Conference Record: 8-4/5-2 Varsity Players Expected for 2012: 45 Returning Lettermen: 20 Returning Offensive Starters: 5 Returning Defensive Starters: 6 Offensive System: Wing T Defensive System: 4-3

It was the second time Clinton had lost to Pottsville that season, and was a fitting end to a season in which the Yellowjackets’ four losses came to teams with a combined 2011 record of 31-5. Additionally, Clinton enjoyed an undefeated record at home, but won just two of its six road games. “It was a good season,” head coach Clint Dufrene says. “We lost to some good teams, but we made it to the second round of the playoffs.” This year, Dufrene looks to avoid the road woes that plagued the 2011 season in an effort to make a deep postseason run. The Yellowjackets return five starters to an offense that averaged 36 points a game last season, with most of their points coming from a balanced rushing attack led by a stable of backs. Junior running back Mason Speer’s explosiveness makes him a weapon in the Yellowjacket offense. He rushed for 40-yard and 92-yard touchdowns at Stuttgart last season, in addition to an 86-yard kickoff return that resulted in a score. Junior wingback Stephen Sappington sees passes thrown his way also.

The Yellowjackets’ rushing attack could struggle because of an inexperienced offensive line, but Dufrene hopes for his lineman to settle into their roles early in the season. Junior Kaleb Ward and senior Malcolm Cambron start at the tackle positions, while sophomore Harrison Lester and senior Dalton Jackson start at guard. Senior Cole Leonard anchors the line at center. Clinton returns six starters to a defense which benefits from a strong front four, but struggles with inexperience elsewhere. Stephen Sappington and Kaleb Ward rush the quarterback from the defensive end spots. Sappington is quick off the line and gives opposing lineman problems with his speed. Dufrene says Ward’s athleticism makes him just as dangerous on the other end of the line. Seniors Jason Barnett and Malcolm Cambron anchor the line at the defensive tackle positions. At linebacker, sophomore Harrison Lester starts alongside Dalton Jackson, Casey Stacks, and Ethan Mizell, all of which are seniors.

In the secondary, senior Cody Webster, junior Mason Speer, and sophomore “We have a good group of running backs,” R o b e r t Dufrene says. “They have a lot of experience Farrell all and a lot of athleticism.” Senior Casey Stacks rounds off Clinton’s Wing-T attack at the fullback position, while sophomore Fielder Dufrene takes snaps at quarterback. Dufrene is a first-time starter, but found success leading the junior high

WAMPUS CATS Building on Success

The Conway Wampus Cats were inexperienced last year, but that didn’t stop them from winning games. After losing the opening game of the season 32-27 to Southside, Conway won eight of its next nine games on the way to its second consecutive conference championship. After a bye week in the first round of the playoffs, they lost in the second round 49-28 to the eventual state champions Fayetteville, a loss that ended Conway’s season with a 9-3 record.

is bolstered by an offensive line of four upperclassmen. Ashcraft is most impressed with his senior left tackle Bryton Booher and senior left guard Brannon Kotch. “I think they’re going to have breakout seasons,” he says.

“We had a great season last year considering we only had two returners on offense,” head coach Clint Ashcraft says.

The Wampus Cats struggled with inexperience on offense last season. This year, however, it is the defense that struggles. Conway’s defense only returns two starters, and they rely on the first-time starters to find success in 2012. Eight of the starters are seniors, however, so Ashcraft hopes they will settle into their respective roles quickly.

Ashcraft seeks to build on last season’s success, as several inexperienced players have blossomed into veterans. The Wampus Cats’ offense returns six starters to their spread offense, led by quarterback Cody Rhoades. It’s the senior’s first season as a starter, but Ashcraft is confident in his abilities. “We will have a new starting quarterback, but with a lot of experience around him,” Ashcraft says. “He shouldn’t feel like he has a lot of pressure on him.” He looks to gain some confidence by completing passes to the speedy Brandon Cox. The senior had over 1,000 yards receiving last season, as well as 10 touchdowns. Juniors Quinton Wyrick and Sidney Moore also see catches at wide receiver. Senior Jeff Anderson and junior Evan Wilson split the duties at tailback. Senior Quincy Wardlow sees a variety of duties at the H-back position. He blocks and catches, and might even see carries. He caught a 22-yard pass at the end of the first half in the playoff loss to Fayetteville. Conway’s

“We have a lot of guys that are going to have to step up and play well,” Ashcraft says. “They have been waiting their turn, and it’s here now.” Senior Jerell Credit rushes from an end spot after a productive offseason. Senior Marcus Wright moves to noseguard from defensive end. At linebacker, seniors Paul Revis and Austin Morgan lead the linebacking corps, with juniors Justin Vinson, Landon Hood, and Jackson Smith seeing playing time alongside them. Conway benefits from a seasoned secondary consisting of four seniors. Junior corner A.J. Burton caught two interceptions last season. Seniors Jalon Hughes and Devin Dooley compete for time at the opposite cornerback position. Seniors Andrew Nance and Tanner Blumhorst prowl at safety. Conway’s first home game is in week two on September 7th, when they host Jonesboro at John McConnell Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.

But they lost steam at the end of the year, dropping the last two games of the regular season to Greenwood and Vilonia. They won the first round of the playoffs 35-16 over Arkadelphia, but their dynamic offense was stifled by Batesville in the second round, losing 16-6.

The words “Train Like A Champion” are painted in red lettering on the wall of Harding Academy’s weight room. But being a champion is not a purely physical endeavor. Below the phrase are three different branches of training. Wildcat players train spiritually, in order to “Be like Christ.” They train physically to increase athleticism and power. And they train mentally, to form a winning attitude. This is the culture head coach Roddy Mote has created at Harding Academy. And it has paid dividends for Mote, who enjoys a 45-7 overall record as a coach of the Wildcats. The team benefited from both an explosive offense and a stalwart defense in the 2011 season, giving up just 12.8 points per game last year while scoring an average of 36.2 points per game. This staggering point differential led the Wildcats to an 11-2 record, but they fell short in the third round of the playoffs, losing 35-9 to the eventual state champions Charleston. “It was a great year that ended with a disappointing loss to the state champion,” Mote says.

season, and threw for over 3,500 yards and 38 touchdowns with only six interceptions. Harding Academy’s spread attack is especially dangerous with remarkable depth at the wide receiver position. Senior Hunter Gentry (5’10, 150 lbs) returns at wideout. He caught 48 passes for 831 yards and nine touchdowns last season, including a three-game run in midseason where he caught two touchdowns passes a game. Junior Trey Davis (6’0, 190 lbs) returns after catching 50 passes for 675 yards and eight touchdowns in 2011. Senior Isaiah English, junior Kohl Blickenstaff, Lane Carger, Nate Rogers and Jake Mackey see playing time at wide receiver as well. Harding Academy graduated its leading rusher last year, and junior Trevor Smith steps up as the Wildcats’ second-leading rusher. He rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns in the 2011 season. Senior Barrett Henderson (6’2, 205 lbs) anchors the offensive line alongside seniors Noah Watson (6’2, 185 lbs), J.R. Miller (6’0, 195 lbs), and juniors Rayel Jackson (5’10, 195 lbs) and Austin Calhoun (5’10, 190 lbs). Henderson is the Wildcats’ biggest starting lineman at 205 pounds, and Mote has concerns about the lack of size on both the offensive and defensive lines. “We also lack depth up front that has game experience,” Mote adds.

This fall, Harding Academy works towards winning its first state championship in a decade. Senior leadership is a key strength for the Wildcats this fall. “It seems like every year, our seniors do a great job of leading our team and making sure we stay focused on the mission of Wildcat football,” Mote “One of our biggest challenges is going to be developing our young players in such a says. way so they can provide depth for us on Harding Academy returns a total of sixteen the offensive and defensive lines,” Mote starters to its team, including seven continues. “We’re hoping to get a lot of offensive starters. Heber Springs

PANTHERS The Crucial Spots For the Heber Springs Panthers, the road to perfection ended in the playoffs, but it didn’t end in a state championship. The 11-0 Panthers faced a 10-2 Farmintgon Cardinals team in the second round of the playoffs, where the Cardinals upset the Panthers 28-12 and sent them home packing.

Heber SpringsPanthers Conference: 4A-2 Head Coach: Steve Janski Years as Head Coach at school: 7 Record at School: 54-28 Athletic Director: Steve Janski Football Staff: Daren Gowen – Offensive Coordinator David Farr – Defensive Coordinator Mark Brigance – Special Teams 2011 Overall / Conference Record: 11-1/7-0 Returning Lettermen: 12 Returning Offensive Starters: 6 Returning Defensive Starters: 6 Offensive System: Multi Defensive System: Multi

Despite the early exit, head coach Steve Janski saw plenty to be happy about in 2011. “It was the best season in school history,” he says. “And it was one of the best teams I’ve ever been around.” The Panthers return twelve starters from that squad, but they replace several key positions on both sides of the ball. They return six starters on offense, but must replace crucial spots at quarterback, running back, and center, amongst others. Most notable is the hole left by quarterback Michael Ludwig, who graduated last spring. Ludwig accounted for nearly 3,000 allpurpose yards last year and 36 all-purpose touchdowns, garnering him a nomination for Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year from Farm Bureau Awards. Quarterback Michael Kramer fills Ludwig’s big shoes and brings a different style of play to Heber Springs’ offense. As a pocket passer, Kramer relies on an improved receiving corps to help make plays this fall. Speedster Ethan Bly starts at tailback after averaging nearly 10 yards per carry last season at wide receiver. The Panthers utilized him on sweeps in 2011, and his explosive speed (4.51 40-yard dash) makes him dangerous in the open field. In limited playing time last season, Bly rushed for 372 yards on an impressive 37 carries for eight touchdowns. He enjoyed breakout games against Harding Academy (4 carries, 94 yards, 1 touchdown) and Lonoke (11 carries, 101

yards, 3 touchdowns). At wideout, the Panthers’ primary target is senior deep threat Clint Ligon (6’2, 190 lbs). In 2011, he caught 15 passes for 392 yards and five touchdowns, notching 26 yards per reception. His versatility ensures he sees time running the ball as well, and he also returns kickoffs. Because of how dangerous Ligon can be, expect senior wide receiver C.J. Cannon (6’0, 165 lbs) to exploit defenses which double-team Ligon. Seniors Micah Dew and Gunner Nelson see playing time at wide receiver as well. The Panthers’ offensive line is a major strength of their offense, mostly because of their size and strength. Junior Nate Hills (6’4, 306 lbs) starts on the offensive line alongside junior Jason Hammons (5’9, 230 lbs). Senior Derrik Fisher also sees playing time on the line, and senior Ethan Lee (5’9, 210 lbs) starts at center. Senior Paul Ballard (5’10, 210 lbs) helps at guard. The Panthers benefit from a big but inexperienced defensive line. “We lost some guys that made some key plays for us last year,” Janski says. “So we’re working on setting some new guys up and getting them comfortable in our system.” In addition to starting at tight end, junior Zach Rasmussen (6’3, 244 lbs) plays defensive end. He recorded 55 tackles and five sacks at end last season, and his length gives offensive lineman difficulties. Junior Cody Bearnhardt rushes the quarterback at the end spot opposite Rasmussen. Derrik Fisher clogs the interior at defensive tackle, while Harley Hooten anchors the line at nose guard.

The linebacking corps is led by Ethan Bly. He recorded 42 tackles in 2011, as well as five sacks and two interceptions. Seniors Josh Hudson and Tylor Alaniz also start at linebacker. Strong safety Micah Dew leads an experienced Panthers secondary consisting of three seniors. Dew compiled 41 tackles in the 2011 season, as well as one sack, not to mention two forced fumbles. Senior Brooks Morgan and Avi Patel are hard hitters at cornerback. Heber Springs’ conference is one of the toughest in the state, and Janski understands the precariousness of facing athletic teams week in and week out when trying to make the playoffs. “We picked up Pine Bluff Dollarway. They’re a very athletic team, and it’s a very athletic conference,” he says. “You could be a good football team and lose to teams like Dollarway, Newport, Marianna and Clinton, and you’d be out of the playoffs.” Heber Springs’ first home game is in week one on August 31st, when it plays host to the Pottsville Apaches at Panther Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Arkansas Baptist

EAGLES Highs and Lows The Arkansas Baptist Eagles enjoyed an 11-2 record last season, building on a 9-2 record from the previous year. After Arkansas Baptist drummed Barton 33-0 in week four, the Bears got revenge in the second round of the playoffs, beating the Eagles 42-7.

Arkansas Baptist Eagles Conference: 4A-7 Head Coach: Brad Helm Years as Head Coach at school: 2 Record at School: 20-4 Overall Record as HC: 20-4 Athletic Director: Billy Goss

Head coach Brad Helm was disappointed with his team’s early exit after a one-loss regular season, but has used the 2011 year as motivation for his players. “I believe we will take the highs and lows of last year and use those for this upcoming year,” he says.

Lamb rushed for 162 yards Byrd last year and scored three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Ryan Perkins returns after earning an all-state selection last season. He caught 84 passes for 1,319 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Senior Dakota Newkirk led the Eagles with 12 touchdown receptions last year. Junior Austin Sherman starts at wide receiver. Mayflower

EAGLES Working as a Team The Mayflower Eagles 2011 season could be summed up with one word: inconsistency. The Eagles struggled to find an identity in a season where they rarely pieced together a complete game of football.

Mayflower Eagles Conference: 3A-5 Head Coach: Jed Davis Years as Head Coach at school: 5 Record at School: 29-28 Athletic Director: Brent Stallings Football Staff: Chad Floyd – Offensive Coordinator Curtis Shannon – Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hill – Wide Receivers/Secondary 2011 Overall / Conference Record: 4-7/3-4 Varsity Players Expected for 2012: 48 Returning Lettermen: 13 Returning Offensive Starters: 5 Returning Defensive Starters: 7 Offensive System: Spread Defensive System: 3-3

Through weeks two through four, they lost by an average of 28 points per game, before drumming Brinkley 69-39 and Rose Bud 42-12 in weeks five and six respectively. They then dropped three of their next four games, limping into the playoffs where they lost in round one to West Fork. “We played many great halves of football games, but rarely put together four good quarters of football,” head coach Jed Davis says. “Our players learned that it takes more than ability to win football games. It takes a team that is willing to work with and for each other.” The Eagles seek to improve their consistency with an offensive group of players perfect for the spread offense Davis runs. “We are really excited about the four and five receiver sets we will be running on offense in the fall,” Davis says. Sophomore Adam Dycus and junior Jordan Burns each take snaps at quarterback for the Eagles. Dycus’s quick feet allow him to make plays for Mayflower in a number of ways. Dycus and Burns throw to a dynamic group of receivers. Senior Daniel Gieber had nearly 300 yards receiving last season, and senior Brandon Forrester returns at wide receiver after a productive offseason. Junior Madison Chambliss makes an impact at inside receiver after catching two touchdown passes last year. Junior Garrett Taylor runs a 4.7 40-yard dash. Sophomores Drew Duncan and Josh Woodham hope to help light up the scoreboard next year for the Eagles. Mayflower’s passing attack is bolstered by an experienced offensive line that returns four starters, including juniors Trey Bradley, Jordan Graves, and Tristin Speed. Senior Chad Hollis anchors the line as a returning starter, and junior Wesley Black is first-time starter on the offensive

line. On defense, the Eagles look to junior safety Bradley Chambliss and senior linebacker Brandon Forrester to lead a hungry Mayflower defense. “We will run a 3-3 or 3-4 with an attack mentality,” Davis says. Forrester was named Mayflower’s Defensive Player of the Year last season. Davis looks for his younger defensive players to step up and embrace their roles in the defense as well. Sophomore Tyler Roberts, as well as junior safety Rick Manning and junior corner Graham Wilson, seek to contribute to an experienced defense that returns seven starters. Senior Jason Dawson mans a cornerback spot. Juniors Ryan Koonce and Jordan Graves return to the defense at the linebacker and defensive line positions respectively. Junior Josh Sutton and Chad Hollis project as defensive lineman. Out of all of his team’s qualities, Davis is most impressed by their work ethic. “These players have committed themselves to the w e i g h t room and t o getting faster,” Davis says.

Quitman

BULLDOGS Confidence and Drive Quitman entered the 2011 season having never enjoyed a winning season, which made the first half of the Bulldogs’ season more than just a pleasant surprise for its fans - it was a shock.

Quitman Bulldogs Conference: 2A-2

Head Coach: Fritz Heidenreich Years as Head Coach at school: 3 Record at School: 13-19 Athletic Director: Gary Rieck Football Staff: Steven Moore – Defensive Coordinator, Runningbacks/Linebackers David Johnson – Offensive Line/Outside Linebackers Caleb Clark – Receivers/Defensive Backs 2011 Overall / Conference Record: 7-4/5-2 Varsity Players Expected for 2012: 28 Returning Lettermen: 13 Returning Offensive Starters: 7 Returning Defensive Starters: 5 Offensive System: Multiple Defensive System: 4-3

Pg. 40 • Conway Central AR Football 2012

Quitman won six of its first seven games, including blowout wins over Poyen (43-6) and Hector (62-0), as well as a nail biting 46-43 shootout with Conway Christian. But the Bulldogs withered in the second half of the season after a 48-12 loss to eventual conference champion Magnet Cove. They limped into the playoffs having lost two of their last three games, where they were defeated 44-22 by Des Arc. With a winning season under its belt, Quitman enters this fall with confidence and drive - and given its conference schedule, the Bulldogs will need it. “Last year provides us with the added incentive to go further than we have,” head coach Fritz Heidenreich says. “But we lost some key players, and other schools in our conference will be tough.” Quitman returns seven starters to an offense that averaged 33 points per game last year. Junior Hadley Martin and sophomore Walker Johnson compete at quarterback. In limited playing time last year, Martin completed 31 passes on 66 attempts for 413 yards and two touchdowns. Quitman saw most of its offensive success with the ground game last year. It averaged 263 rushing yards and 3.5 rushing touchdowns per game last season, and all-state senior running back Allen Mannon returns to spearhead the Bulldogs’ ground game. Mannon rushed for 1,189

yards on 173 carries, and visited the end zone 16 times in 2011. A solid senior receiving corps adds crucial experience and versatility to the Bulldogs’ offensive attack. Senior all-conference wide receiver Chase Stewart is the Bulldogs’ primary target. He was their go-to guy in 2011, catching 35 passes for 536 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior Hunter Martin, who moves to receiver after earning all-state honors at quarterback makes, an impact alongside Stewart. Seniors Jamen Ellis and Hunter Bridges comprise the remainder of the wideouts. Heidenreich sees moving the ball as a challenge with an inexperienced offensive line. Quitman starts two sophomores in Josh Harrison and Ty Davis. Juniors Jacob Carr and all-conference returner Eugene Peguese anchor the line. Returning starter Devin Brown is the only senior starter. On defense, the secondary is a strength for Quitman. All five starters return to their respective positions. Seniors Hunter Bridges and Dakota Bohannan are three-year starters at cornerback, while senior Ian Johnson, Hunter Martin, and Hadley Martin work as safeties. Quitman’s front four make up for its lack of size with a tenacious work ethic. Seniors Derek Robinson and Eugene Peguese return to play defensive end, while seniors Colby Carter, Cody Tennant, and Sawyer Johnson rotate at defensive tackle. Senior Justin Kent and junior Jacoby Brown return to start at the linebacker positions. Heidenreich named Brown the defensive player of the week for his week five performance against Poyen last season, in which he recorded seven tackles and one sack. Bigelow is a crucial matchup for Quitman this season.

RAMBLERS Learning from Experience

Rose Bud Ramblers Conference: 3A-2

Head Coach: Steve Rose Years as Head Coach at school: 4 Record at School: 6-34 Athletic Director: Dennis Smith Football Staff: Steve Rose – Offensive Coord/ Quarterbacks/Linebackers Matt Porter – Defensive Coord/Strong Safeties/Outside Linebackers Scotty Starkey – Wide Receivers/ Defensive Backs Joey Pruitt – Offensive line/Defensive Line 2011 Overall / Conference Record: 2-8/1-6 Varsity Players Expected for 2012: 37 Returning Lettermen: 26 Returning Offensive Starters: 10 Returning Defensive Starters: 8 Offensive System: Spread Defensive System: 3-5-3

The Rose Bud Ramblers football program had won only five games in the previous four seasons going into the 2011 year, but the Ramblers enjoyed a competitive showing last season for such a young team. Even though they finished the season 2-8, they played with their conference opponents, and led in several games that they lost due to inexperience. It was a learning experience for head coach Steve Rose’s team, and he saw plenty of room for improvement this offseason. “We struggled as a young team,” Rose says. “We had several early leads that we were unable to hang onto last season. We have addressed these in the spring and the year of experience helped a lot.” Experience is a major strength for the Ramblers in 2012, as they return a total of 18 starters, including 10 on offense. Junior quarterback Christian Reynolds leads Rose Bud’s explosive spread offense from the quarterback position. He passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns in the Ramblers’ season-opening shootout against Quitman. Junior Cole Robertson, Rose Bud’s leading rusher, also returns, as well as its two senior playmaking receivers Dillon Reesnes and Spencer Starkey. Starkey had a big game in week five against Riverview last season, catching eight passes for 120 yards and one touchdown. Josh Pratt and Turner Moon see playing time at receiver also. Sophomore Caleb Ferren starts at halfback after pacing the junior high squad a season ago. He caught a 33-yard touchdown pass against Quitman last year. Senior left guard Tyler Jett returns to anchor the offensive line, alongside left tackle Tristan Woods, center Sam Brannan, right guard Trey McCann,

and right tackle Brandon Hampton, all of which are juniors. The Ramblers’ 3-5-3 defense is led by linebackers Osiris Jauregi and Daniel Strain. Jauregi, a senior, tackled the ballcarrier 65 times in 2011. Strain, a junior, recorded 12 tackles in the week two win over Mountain View. Junior Blake Moss and sophomore Blake Ferrell compete for the starting job at the other linebacker spot. While linebackers are the primary playmakers for Rose Bud, Rose sees its run defense as a weakness, which he has improved through tackling drills. Juniors Tristan Evans and Tristin Wood start at defensive end, while sophomore Francisco Charqueno clogs the middle at nose guard. Junior Josh Pratt returns to the dog position after racking up 42 tackles last year, and junior Tyler Weatherley returns to the rover spot. In the secondary, senior Bodhi Perry and junior Chris Henry start at cornerback. Sophomore Sam Mcgrand is a first-year starter at free safety. Rose Bud struggles with a lack of speed on both sides of the ball. Coach Rose has addressed this in their strength and conditioning program and hopes to improve on their quickness for the fall. Rose’s goals for the 2012 Ramblers are to make the playoffs and win his conference. He seeks to build a winning culture at Rose Bud, and hopes to begin in a 2012 season that is rich with experience. “We want to build a tradition in the program of winning and being a playoff contender,” Rose says. “We continue to build on our success in the junior high program, as we were conference runner-ups. It was the best three seasons in the program’s short history.” Rose Bud’s first home game is against Quitman on August 31st in week one at Rambler Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

LIONS Staying Hungry After winning just 11 games in the previous four seasons, the Searcy Lions surprised opponents last year. An explosive offense led the Lions to a 9-3 record, including a signature victory over an excellent Jonesboro football team.

“We had a very good year and it left us hungry for more,” head coach Tim Harper says. “We felt like we still let a couple of games get away from us, and we hope not to make some of the same mistakes again.”

Seniors Mickey DeMarzo, Codie Reed, and Javion Clifton anchor the offensive line. Sophomores Brady Anderson and Kurt Briggs are first-time starters. Hal Niederbrach The Lions return five starters on defense, including senior defensive linemen Hal Niederbrach and Dre Chatman. Junior Grant Grady starts on the line as well, and juniors Luke Feather and Dezmond Gavin play at the defensive end spots.

Harper hopes his offense will be just as volatile in 2012 with eight returning starters on offense. Searcy has a stable of backs, including all-state seniors Antwon Arnold and Cam Woodruff. Harper wants to carry the momentum from last season’s quarterfinal run into this season, and sees plenty to improve upon. “We want to make it to at least the semi-finals in the 6A playoffs,” Harper says. To do that, Searcy needs to win pivotal non-conference matchups against Batesville and Morrilton in weeks two and three. Harper feels it’s crucial to win early in the season to establish momentum going into the difficult conference schedule. EAGLES Building Momentum

Pg. 46 • Conway Central AR Football 2012

The Vilonia Eagles faced many challenges in the 2011 season, the biggest being its tough schedule that included road games against Wynne, Beebe, Morrilton, and Greenwood. And while the Eagles played with their opponents, Vilonia was unable to pull off wins in several close games, finishing the season with a 4-6 record. But there was a silver lining to Vilonia’s season. It closed the year with two consecutive wins over Harrison and Greenbrier, and head coach Jim Stanley seeks to carry that momentum into this fall with just over half of his starters returning. Vilonia returns six starters to an offense that averaged 26 points per game last season. Senior Michael Atkinson returns to lead the Eagles at quarterback. Atkinson received all-conference and all-state accolades last season as a running back, and brings a dual threat to the quarterback position. Junior Joseph Owens carries the load at running back with size and speed, but several players will see carries this fall. Junior Drew Estes projects at fullback, but both he and senior tight end Jake Steward rotate between the skill positions. Steward was named as an all-conference honorable mention in 2011. Junior wingback Houston Cotton’s athletic ability makes him a weapon for the Eagles’ offense. Senior duo Dylan Bryant and Madison Temples use their size to create mismatches at wide receiver. Juniors Chase Marshall, Seth Warner, Kent Madden, and Cody Earnhart see playing time also.

www.arsports.net

Senior tackle Tyler Velasco anchors the line with good footwork. Juniors Jon Alexander and Nathan Max start at center and guard, respectively. Junior Logan Penter and senior Braylin Richardson rotate in on the line. Logan Penter leads the pass rush at defensive end with strength and speed. Junior Jon Alexander clogs the middle at noseguard. Senior Tate Smalley, junior Dustin Waller, and Nathan Max rotate play on the line also. The Eagles defense benefits from a seasoned group of linebackers consisting of three seniors. Zane Jefferson leads the linebacking corps, starting alongside Martin Reyes and Elijah Lawrence, both of whom had productive offseasons. In the secondary, senior Trey Wyatt projects at cornerback. He’s only five-foot-ten, but Stanley says his vertical gives him added ability at the position. Senior duo Jake Steward and Michael Atkinson ball hawk at strong and free safety, respectively. Stanley highlights work ethic as a major strength of this Eagles football team and lack of depth as a weakness. Stanley foresees Morrilton and Alma as two pivotal games in Vilonia’s conference schedule this fall. Vilonia’s first home game is on September 14th in week three, when the Eagles play host to Wynne at Phillip Weaver Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The Riverview Raiders’ 2011 season was a year of streaks. They began the year with a three-game losing skid before winning four in a row. A 47-6 loss to Harding Academy evened their record at 4-4, and they dropped the remaining three games of the season to finish the season with a 4-7 record. Although they ended the season with a losing record, the Raiders’ spread offense saw plenty of success, averaging 22 points per game in a conference filled with tough defenses. They return plenty of weapons from that offense, most notably senior Cole Butler, who threw for nearly 1,300 yards last season and 11 touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 415 yards last year and four touchdowns. The Raiders return their leading rusher McKenzie Jones, who starts his senior year after a breakout junior season in which he rushed for 678 yards and six touchdowns.

Riverview returns seven starters on defense, most notably nose guard Avery Edom. Junior Rodrigo Thomas blows by lineman at defensive end, recording three sacks last season. Seniors Zach Derrick and Cole Butler anchor the linebacking corps. McKenzie Jones and senior Desmond Pettis combined for over 150 tackles last season in the secondary. Junior Zane Honey covers receivers at cornerback. Head coach Stuart Hill looks for the Raiders to play polished football this fall after struggling with turnovers a year ago. Riverview committed a combined 34 turnovers over the course of last season, with 17 fumbles lost and 17 interceptions thrown. Experience at the skilled positions should help reduce those types of mistakes.

A seasoned group of receivers return to bolster the passing attack, including seniors Dalton Davis, Ramiro Beltran, and Austin Riverview’s first home game is on August Fulks. How to Select an Orthopaedic Surgeon As it sometimes happens, your first encounter to serving communities and individuals with with an orthopaedic surgeon may be in the unique needs.” (AAOS, tyyp://www.6.aaos.org/ hospital emergency room after you have about/public/definition.cfm) sustained an injury – a fractured ankle, for example, or a sprain. But how do you find Things to Consider when an orthopaedic surgeon when there isn’t an an Orthopaedic emergency and you need a specialist to check Choosing out that sore knee or chronic shoulder pain? Surgeon

Here’s a look at what orthopaedists do and how to choose the one that’s right for you. According to the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, “an orthopaedic surgeon is a physician devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, disorders and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. This system includes bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and tendons. While orthopaedic surgeons are familiar with all aspects of the musculoskeletal system, many orthopaedists specialize in certain areas, such as the foot and ankle, hand, shoulder and elbow, spine, hip or knee. Orthopaedic surgeons may also choose to focus on specific fields like pediatrics, trauma, reconstructive surgery, oncology (bone tumors) or sports medicine.” Some orthopaedists may specialize in several areas and may collaborate with other specialists, such as neurosurgeons or rheumatologists, in caring for patients. There are many musculoskeletal conditions that can be treated without surgery through the use of medication, exercise and other rehabilitative or alternative therapies.

Who does an Orthopaedic Surgeon Treat? “Orthopaedic surgeons treat patients of all ages – newborns, children, athletes, baby boomers and the elderly – with conditions that range from bone and joint disorders and fractures to diseases or tears of the muscles, ligaments and tendons in all regions of the body. It is essential that patients and their families develop partnerships with their physicians. This will help ensure that decisions about medical treatments honor the patients’ wants, needs, preferences and values. Orthopaedic surgeons respect the value of diversity and are committed

One of the first things to consider is the doctor’s level of education. An orthopedist may have completed up to 14 years of formal education, including four years of undergraduate education, four years in medical school, five years of concentrated study in an orthopaedic residency at a major medical center, and an additional year of specialty training. After becoming licensed to practice medicine, an orthopaedic surgeon completes board certification. To become board certified, an orthopaedic surgeon must undergo a peer-review process, and then demonstrate his/her expertise in orthopaedics by passing both oral and written examinations given by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. It is important to visit orthopaedic surgeons who are either board certified or in the process of becoming certified. Because orthopaedic surgeons complete a rigorous recertification process every 10 years, they spend many hours studying and attending continuing medical education courses to maintain current orthopaedic knowledge and skills. Next, make sure the orthopaedist you choose has experience in your injury or condition. Chances are your primary care physician has already diagnosed your problem and has made the referral, but when you contact the orthopaedic clinic make sure to ask for the orthopaedist with experience for your problem. If your primary care physician hasn’t made a referral for you, ask for a recommendation of the best local orthopaedists. Talk to your friends. For common conditions, such as arthritis, ACL surgery, carpal tunnel, etc., you are likely to have co-workers, friends or family who know a good orthopaedist and will have firsthand experience. In addition, an excellent source of information is the AAOS website: www.aaos.org. Once you have made a selection, think about what you want to ask the doctor. During the course of an appointment, an orthopaedist will www.arsports.net

obtain a complete medical history, prescription drug/medication inventory, and description of the problem. Orthopaedists are skilled in the diagnosis of an injury or disorder, prescribing treatment, recommending rehabilitation, and offering information on prevention. But, it’s still important to ask questions. Consider bringing a friend or family member with you to help you remember questions. Don’t be afraid to ask about your doctor’s credentials and experience. Here are some questions recommended by the American Association of Hop and Knee Surgeons: -Do you have written materials or videotapes about this surgery that I can review? -How much improvement can I expect from this surgery? -What is your experience doing this type of surgery, and how many have you done? -Are you board certified? -What are the risks involved? How likely are they? -What type of anesthesia will be used? What are the risks? -What type of implant will be used? What is the track record for this type of prosthesis? -Will I have to stop taking any of my medications before surgery? -What options are available to avoid a blood transfusion? -How long will I have to stay in the hospital? -How much pain is normal to expect and how long will it last? Will I receive medication for the pain? -When will I start physical therapy? Will I need home or outpatient therapy? -Will I need to arrange from some assistance at home? If so, for how long? -What limits will there be on activities, such as driving, bathing, climbing stairs, eating, etc.? -How long will I need to be off work? -How often will I need to return for follow-up visits? -What complications, if any, can arise after surgery? What are the signs to look for? Look for an experienced, well-regarded surgeon. Meet your orthopaedist to make sure you can work well with him/her. Trust your instincts. If a meeting with a doctor does not go well, it doesn’t mean he/she is a bad doctor or you are a bad patient. It simply may mean the two of you are not a good fit.
