Sports have always been in the blood of the community of Central Arkansas – and basketball, without any doubt, has been a major part of it. It has homed former NBA greats such as Scottie Pippen and Derek Fisher and in the recent history continued to follow such tradition with the return of Arkansas’ native Corliss Williamson as the head coach of UCA and manufacture of college stand-outs like Nate Bowie and Durrell Nevels who actively pursue their professional careers in Europe these days. Basketball has touched nearly every household in every town we covered, and as people who live and breathe basketball; we know how hard it is to keep up with everyone and everything that’s going on…especially, if you wish to follow your favorite teams that don’t get enough state or national exposure.

Quitman Bulldogs...................26

For these reasons, we are very proud to bring you this inaugural publication. We have poured ourselves into the 2011 issue of Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine, and in order to meet the expectations of fans, players, parents and coaches, we have put together a winning team of dedicated writers, editors, designers, interns and sales staff to bring you this first edition. Our goal is simple – to turn a massive, full color, comprehensive mirror on basketball in this area. We wish to portrait each of these teams with articles, stats, recruiting information, photography and analysis they deserve and reflect the passion we witnessed with our own eyes every time we walked into their high school or college arenas.

It takes pride, determination, commitment, passion, and toughness to be a basketball player on any level. The players know it, and their coaches know it. Now, we want everyone else to know it, as those traits are displayed by every player listed in this publication and in thousands more who lace up their shoes and give it their all for the team and the community. For you, and for them, we are very proud of the 2011 Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine. We hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed publishing it, and that this just the first of many exciting issues to come in the future. Now…let’s get down to basketball. Ronnie Brewer

From UofA to the NBA

As basketball season takes center stage in the sports world, we figured the time was right to check in with one of Arkansas’s most successful players, the Chicago Bulls’ 26-year-old Ronnie Brewer. The 6-7 guard and former University of Arkansas stand-out holds career averages of 9.4ppg, 3.0 rpg and 1.5 spg in the NBA in six seasons with Utah, Memphis and Chicago. In 2010-11, Brewer’s Chicago Bulls enjoyed their most successful season in the post Michael Jordan era, finishing their regular season with 62 wins and making a deep play-off run that ended in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. This summer we had a chance to sit down with U of A’s former great and do a little oneon-one interview: Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine: First off Ronnie, we would like to congratulate you on a great run you made this year with Chicago. It seems like the Bulls finally have a championship squad again. What’s been the key part of the team’s dramatic improvement over the last two seasons?

sacrifice a big part of your game in order to help them out?

Ronnie: Adjustments are part of the game. Sometimes you do have to sacrifice in order to make it in this league. Jerry Sloan once told me that if I wanted to play for him, I had to provide something to the team that they didn’t have – athleticism and a Ronnie: Thanks a lot man, I appreciate the support. We really defensive stopper. I bought into it and hang my hat on that every have a wonderful coach in Thibs this year. He made us believe time I step on the court. that if we all come to play together as a team on both ends of the floor, we could be something special. We bought into it and that’s Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine: Being that Central Arkansas why we made such improvements. Hoops Magazine is primarily a High School Basketball Magazine; our younger readers would certainly like to know something about Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine: You’ve obviously played those adjustments that basketball players face when they make against some of the best players in the world and had many of transitions from one level to the next. In your opinion, what was them as your teammates too, but now you’re play alongside the the biggest challenge you had to deal with when going from high league’s most valuable player, Derrick Rose. How does that feel? school to college of from college to the NBA? Does playing along D-Rose impact your game in a different way than playing along with Deron Williams? Ronnie: Oh man, the biggest challenge? I’d have to say it was the speed of the game. It seems like at each level the game just keeps Ronnie: To be honest, it was a complete honor to be able to play getting faster. For the younger readers, I would advise them to alongside such a great young talent as Derrick. He is such a hard train every day as if they were playing in real games. They need to worker and has made huge strides in becoming the league’s MVP. use their practice time to simulate the actual game situations and D-Will is a true point guard – arguably the best in the league, but intensity that comes with them. Ronnie: I think hard work gets you noticed, period. If you work hard all the time, you will be seen no matter how small the city you reside at is. Products of hard work always show up on the court, and people who know the game of basketball will eventually recognize talent.

keep a positive attitude and always stick to your plan, no matter how unachievable it may seem to everyone else around you. Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine: Let’s talk a little about college recruiting. Can you tell us, what are some of the most important qualities that coaches on higher levels look for when they scout for potential players? Ronnie: I think that every coach wants just one thing from his players – to be coachable. In other words, they look for players that will adopt their philosophy and listen to them. They all love to see players who show heart on the court and who play with passion. They look for team players, players who can overcome all sorts of adversities, as well individuals who will do the right thing when no one is looking.

Ronnie: Not necessarily, because in team sports like basketball there are a lot of different situations that players can be put in and numbers don’t always reflect their true value. You never see any crazy stats when you win games with great teamwork or with great coaching, but great teams are more often than not the product of those factors.

Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine: Any advice for high school coaches on what they should do to prepare their players to be successful on and off the court on college level.

Ronnie: They need to make sure their kids stay focused in school. High school and college players should put equal effort in the classroom as they do in the gym, and coaches need to hold them Central Arkansas Hoops Magazine: So do you believe then accountable for it. has also graduated some quality players, but Conway’s schedule remains competitive as ever. “Having lost most of our offense from last season definitely presents a challenge, but our winning standards won’t change because of that. We will continue to work hard and play together. Along with the already mentioned issues, we will also try to develop some chemistry because it always played a big part of our team’s success.”

As far as the question of team’s starting playmaker, Bates seems to have several names in mind – amongst them Kevin Guiden, Dominic Taylor, Garan Davis and DeSean Turner, and says, “Right now, I don’t have any favorites. Everyone will get their chance. Most of the kids we have this year, however, have not played that role before. We need someone who will set the plays and get us going when things get tough. We are largely unproven and we want our point guard to distribute the ball evenly on the floor and get us some easy shots whenever that’s possible. Whoever can do that, will be the guy that gets the job. ”

Due to lack of size, speed will be the main strength of this squad – especially at guard. Coach Bates plans to implement all types of running game with lots of outside shooting, “Quickness and speed are going to be our main weapons. We’ll try to run against everyone, but I also want to see some balance out there. There will be some tough nights and against certain schools we simply won’t be able to play an up-tempo game. Because of that, we will look to improve in our half-court offense in the preseason.” This year’s team resembles a lot to last year’s, and if certain issues are worked out in the training camp, there is no reason to think that the Wampus Cats can’t go deep in the playoffs. Coach Bates is extremely confident in his players and expects them to compete every night as a unit. The rest of the 7A Central Conference

lack of size with speed and quickness. They are a tough bunch and play great defense, and we will use that to our advantage. Because of their attitude, I think it’s safe to say that nobody will run us over this year.” Another key issue that Nance hopes can be resolved early in the season is scoring. With the departure of Taylor Gault (UALR signee), who was a huge part of their offense and team’s leading scorer, other players will have to step up. Last year’s sixth man, Alexus Clardy (Senior) is expected to take on the role of a starter and contribute more on offense while having the same impact on defense. “Alexus is a terrific player”, Nance says. “She does a lot of dirty work for us. She rebounds the ball well, generates steals, and sets good screens. She is very smart and we’re looking for her to take on an even bigger role for us offensively. I think she’s just a great all-around player.” The remaining two spots in the starting five remain unknown, and out of the 16 names on her roster, coach Nance plans to use the preseason workouts to figure out who out of that bunch wants it the most. “Right now I can’t say for sure who the other two starters are going to be. Their commitment in the preseason will determine that. We are always looking to put our best five to start the game, but also the five that have worked the hardest and deserve it the most.” Expectations are certainly high this year for the Lady Cats, but how far they will go, remains to be seen. Conference rivals like North Little Rock and Cabot are returning their key players from last season and will present a major challenge. Nance shows optimism and excitement when talking about the upcoming season, “I expect my players to be more comfortable with my coaching style. I want them to be a serious contender in our conference, and I believe we can achieve that. I was very pleased with what they gave me last season and I think we can build on it. I look forward to seeing where we stand, but overall I think this will be a good year for all of us.”

greenbrier Lady Panthers

To Become Winners is... Lady Panthers Goal There is a lot that is new about the Greenbrier in 2011-12: new coach, new staff, new lineup, and new leaders. But not everything is new, as the Lady Panthers are expected to still have a substandard product on the floor that is not likely to improve much upon a sub.500 showing. Following a 14-15 overall record, the Lady Panthers hired Tobin McCammon, who holds an impressive 455-210 record in 23 years of head coaching. McCammon is familiar with Greenbrier’s team and system, having spent the last few seasons there as the girls’ assistant coach. His mission for 2011-12 season is to revive what used to be one of the best programs in the 5A-West Conference and lead them back to the state tournament. “Our goal is to become winners”, McCammon explains. “Last season we didn’t make it to the state tournament and I’m hopeful that some of these players will use that as motivation to do better this time around.” Greenbrier girls’ squad returns 7 names from a season ago. The most productive returnee is senior point guard Ali Rowden who average 8 points per contest last year. She will look to improve on that number and provide the team with leadership and stability on both ends of the floor. Another likely starter is wing Kailey Madden who also averaged 8 points for the Lady Panthers in 2010-11 and has one year of eligibility remaining.

“Other than Ali and Kailey, I really don’t know who else will start for us this year”, McCammon offers. “Our outside game looks pretty strong at the moment, but we need to improve our rebounding if we’re going to be successful. I expect Aundra and Becca to see extended minutes on the floor and flourish in their new roles. Our success will depend largely on their contributions this season.”

It could be weeks before McCammon has a feel for his roster and settles on the rotation.

“Obviously, we have a lot of work to do to restore the pride and winning mentality back in our basketball program at the Greenbrier High School”, McCammon says. “It’s not going to be an easy thing to do. When asked about his players and the team’s expectations for the upcoming 2011-12 basketball season, Vilonia’s head coach, Lance Davis, showed signs of cautious optimism as his Eagles look to improve on last year’s disappointing 6-15 record (2-9 in conference play).

It’s barely September and there are still lots of question marks surrounding this year’s team”, Davis says, laughing as he sits in his office. “We are going to be very, very young this season, and our preseason schedule will be huge for us when it comes to answering some of them. The good thing is that I have 25 guys out there on the floor now and all of them are willing to work their hearts out every single day in practice.” As it turns out, this year’s squad will be as inexperienced as any in the 5A West conference, with only two returning lettermen, yet Davis has enough talent to improve on last year’s record. In particular two players; Nick Schnebelen (guard) who played heavy minutes last season and is anticipated to have a much bigger role, and Trevor Martin (combo-guard) who was named all-conference last season. Martin is expected to be the team’s captain as well as Davis’ main offensive weapon. “Both of those guys will be our anchors. They know that this is their year and we certainly expect a lot from them”, Davis offered. “However, we do have some other issues that concern me, which we must address before the season starts.” Seniors Trey Lewis (Point Guard), Sam Woody (Forward) are expected to fill in the roles of the team’s leaders as well, and provide the Eagles with the much needed experience that will help them close out games better than in 2010-11 – something that, according to Coach Davis, really hurt them and their overall record. Davis plans to keep things simple on the offense by using motion as their primary option and a few other set plays for guys like Martin and Schnebelen. Due to lack of size and height, they will have to rely on fast tempo, run-and-gun style of play generated

Vilonia Lady Eagles “Lady Eagles Have No Need To Panic” “Rebuilding Doesn’t Mean Losing”

Colleen Ferris

Alaina Riley

Baylee Daves

Lydia Gordon

With the 2011-12 basketball season on the horizon, the Lady Eagles seem to be headed towards an unfamiliar territory. After three very successful, play-off enriched seasons, this year’s squad certainly looks like a team in transition. “Rebuilding – it’s definitely not a term I like to use when I think about my squad, but having lost so many quality players from last year, I’m afraid that’s exactly where we’re headed”, coach Alvin Riley, who lead the Lady Eagles to state title in 2009, explains while we sit in his office. However, Eagles faithful don’t need to panic, because the term “rebuilding” doesn’t quite mean the same as losing in Coach Riley’s dictionary. Even after suffering key loses on his roster, he still believes that this year’s team is capable of keeping up with the rest of the competition and certainly has no plans to expect less from his players once the new season starts. “We’re going to work hard and try to win every single game. We will compete all the way until the final buzzer sounds”, Riley affirms. “We probably won’t succeed in our goal to win all of our games, but that’s the mindset we’re going to have anyway. Just because we’re a team in transition, it doesn’t give us the right to make excuses. We’ve lived up to our expectations in the past, and our standards will not change this year.”

(guard), Alaina Riley (guard), Baylee Daves (forward) and the only returning starter, Lydia Gordon (guard). These four Lady Eagles are expected to start this year, while the fifth starting spot remains Riley’s source of additional motivation for the rest of the team throughout their pre-season trainings. “As of right now, that fifth spot is still up for grabs. I’d say Ashlyn Hightower has a great chance to be there for us, but being that it’s still early in September, nothing is guaranteed and someone else could easily swoop in that place instead of her.”

The inside game is where the question marks will be for this team. The Lady Eagles have lost their leading scorer and leading rebounder from a season ago in Catherine Puckett, and will need a more balanced offense this year to compensate for it. Coach Riley certainly believes that their outside game will be much stronger than it was in previous years and will be looking for his team to push the ball as much as they can. The Lady Eagles will basically be working with an eight player rotation – using motion offense and mixing the 2-3 zone with man-to-man on defense.

According to Coach Riley, the key for this season will be to work What is going to help Coach Riley to accomplish hard from the month of August until October and make sure that their team goals this season is the return of four everyone fully understands their roles. It seems obvious that a key players from last season – Colleen Ferris new leader on offense and defense has to emerge for the Lady Eagles, but Riley doesn’t show lack of optimism when it comes to resolving those issues. “This is a very hard working group of kids and they are extremely smart and patient. The other teams in our conference have to deal with key losses from as well, so we’re not the only ones with that problem. It just means that this year we’re going to have a new leading scorer and a new leading rebounder.” As an answer to our question about how far the Lady Eagles could go this year, Riley was short, but his message was loud and clear; “We won’t make any predictions about how far we can go this year. We’re not the type of team who does that. But what I can say is that it’s going to be a process for all of us, and we’re going to work very hard all year to make sure we’re competitive once again.”

Entering his 7th year as head coach, Brent Bruich faces a difficult task of finding quality replacements for four of his last year’s starters. Expectations Always High At St Josephs

For someone who lost a number of quality players and whose program wasn’t expected to do a lot in 2010-11, Chris Kordsmeier produced a heck of a season at St. Joseph’s. The Lady Bulldogs’ 15-14 overall record and 5-7 in conference should not be denigrated. In fact, it could be argued that Kordsmeier did one of the better coaching jobs in the league but was overlooked because of the team’s earlier accomplishments (state runner-ups in 2009 and 2010).

The Lady Bulldogs have enough good players to be successful in 2011-12. But how successful they can be depends on whether Kordsmeier can fit the pieces of the puzzle together and assign the right roles for each of his players. Expectations at St. Joseph’s are high as always. “Going to state tournament is constantly a goal for us”, Kordsmeier concludes. “I hope that the experience we’ve gained since then can Entering his 22nd season as head coach, Kordsmeier’s goal is to help us in 2011.” build off of last year’s success, and a few key components from that team have returned to make his job a bit easier. The Lady Bulldogs have plenty of experience on the inside, but lack some leadership and skill on the perimeter. Kordsmeier, who doesn’t have a projected starting lineup at the moment, expects from some of the younger players to step up and fill in that void for them. “We lost a lot of good guards from last season and in order to be successful we have to address that issue as soon as possible”, Kordsmeier said. “We had a pretty good junior high team last year, so we hope that our young players like Meagan and Rachel Briggler can step Coach: Chris Kordsmeier up and really help us out.” AD: Chris Kordsmeier Principal: Joe Mallett Another key component 502 Front St, Conway that returns is a swingman, Gym - 501-327-1586 Jennifer Hegeman. “Jennifer Class: 2A was one of our top players a year ago”, Kordsmeier adds. Head Coach, Shane Davis, is somewhat guarded when answering questions about this squad but lacks no optimism when it comes to expecting an improvement on last year’s 11-14 overall record (4-8 in conference). “As a school, we are highly motivated to do better because we believe we can do that. Davis expects to have a roster with 14 names on it when the season starts, and the best news about that is that he will have 10 returning lettermen (six of Class: 2A them being seniors) whose experience will be used to Colors: Blue, White, Eagle’s advantage. Ethan Ellis, Red a senior guard, is expected to Mascot: Eagle take on a much bigger offensive role (8PPG, 3RPG, 2SPG last season), along with fellow senior guard, Lance Beckman (4PPG, 2APG, 1SPG last season) and junior Tanner Stevenson (6PPG last season). Davis expects that these three players can carry the offense that suffered greatly with the departures of All-State Kirby Powell (23PPG), Zach Johnson (15PPG, 9RPG) and Caleb Stanton (7PPG, 5APG). “We have a lot to replace offensively,” Davis offers. “We have to play at a faster pace than years past and use our speed and athleticism to our advantage. We hope to find more scoring options since we just graduated 45 points per game from our three seniors last year, and I am eager to see which one of these kids will step up and fill that void for us.” Centers Will Sanderlin, Will Den Hartog and Caleb Dather are expected to be major contributors off the bench and could turn out to be starters later in the season depending on how successful the offense is in the 4 guard system. In fact, Davis hopes that one of those three players can step up for them as early as in the preseason since the team’s lack of size could mean potential match-up nightmares on defense. The projected starting five: Ellis, Beckman, Stevenson, Tyler Ratliff and Jacob Callaway is athletic and rebounds well for its height, but lacks true inside presence. Davis plans to relay on fundamentals in order to compensate for their deficiencies, “There is no doubt that we have to do a better job with our half-court defense, especially against the dribbledrive. We have to be fundamentally sound because at the moment we simply don’t have quality big men we can rely on every night. The guards have to make sure they stay in front of their opponents; otherwise nobody will be there to protect the rim. I plan to use multiple defenses on any given night and hopefully catch some of the other teams off guard. The main thing I expect from my players is to force a lot of turnovers and deflections, which in turn will feed our fast-breaks where we can use our main strengths – speed and quickness.”

Lady Eagles

Returning Letter Winners Expected To Take New Roles

In 2010-2011, the CCS Lady Eagles played a brutally tough schedule, including 9 opponents who finished as semifinalists or better in the state tournaments and ended the season with an overall 10-17 record (7-5 in conference). The end of season also meant the end of high school careers for two of the most decorated basketball players in Conway Christian history - Kelly Hays Sarah Nekonchuk (Harding signee) and Christina Den Hartog who finished their careers having both scored more than 1000 points. Also ending their careers were key-contributors Alexi Dather and Sarah Martin.

to lack any optimism and faith in his players as he goes on to say: “This year’s team is athletic and well-balanced, and most of the time that balanced scoring is more effective when it comes to winning games than having one or two really great players. Basketball is a team sport after all, and once players buy into the philosophy of sharing the ball, moving without it and helping each other on defense, This season’s Lady Eagle squad is largely unproven. Head Coach great things can happen.” Jeremy Carson expects to have a roster with 9 names, but won’t be able to count on the play of sophomore Hannah Cates who is ineligible due to transfer rule. Furthermore, the roster features 5 players who are new to the varsity team, including transfer Haley Carter, and sophomores Reagan Coffey and Anna Cain. The returning letter winners from last season Allison Hopkins, Sarah Nekonchuk, and Sarah Roberson are expected to take on new roles as team leaders after serving as key reserves last year. “Inexperience is something that we will have to deal with as a team. It will be a learning process for all of us”, Coach Carson explains. “We only have 2 seniors on the roster this season, and compared to some of the other teams in our conference that’s not a lot. However, I still expect them to provide us with the necessary leadership on and off the court, and help their teammates as they make their transition into new roles. We hope to learn and get better as a team as the season progresses.”

Some of the key roles that need to be filled for this team this year are the roles of the offensive leader and defensive stopper. With the losses of Hays and Den Hartog, Carson’s team looks somewhat shaky in those areas as nobody on the current roster made any significant statistical contributions previous season. The projected starting five Carter, Cain, Hopkins, Nekonchuk and Roberson is inexperienced as any in the league, so determining everyone’s roles will be crucial to CCS’s success. Carson plans to address this issue in training camp and have it resolved as early as in the preseason: “Scoring and rebounding seem to be major problems for us as we head into the new season. When you lose two great players like Kelly (Hayes) and Christina (Den Hartog), it’s never easy because you have to start the process all over and assign team roles from scratch.” Carson, however, doesn’t seem www.arsports.net

Ladies Bench Full Of Optimism

Finishing with an 11-17 overall record (5-9 in conference) and a first-round exit at the regional tournament may not seem like a success story to many of our readers. But, after going 0-41 in his first two seasons, head coach David Frizzell enters his fifth year on Mayflower’s bench full of optimism, “We’re taking baby steps, but I think we’re getting there”, he said. “This year, we’re going to be better all the way around. She is expected to play more at the point guard position and provide the Lady Eagles with steadiness on offense. The Lady Eagles are especially interested to see how they measure up against Jessieville, a team that hasn’t lost a conference game in nearly two years. “Our calendar is not an easy one”, Frizzell concluded. “We are scheduled to play some great teams. But needless to say, we’re not discouraged. We have some good talent on our squad and great chemistry. All the girls get along very well, and come ready to work every single day. If we can avoid any additional problems and steer clear of major injuries throughout the year, I believe this team has what it takes to go very far in the playoffs.”

Additionally, Jessica Web (5’10 sophomore) who averaged 10 points per game on the junior high squad could become a force in near future. Frizzell expects her to be an immediate contributor off the bench and fill some of the team’s gaps – especially on offense. Ashley Walter (5’7 sophomore forward) and Kaitlyn Carter (5’11 sophomore transfer) could get playing time in Frizzell’s rotation as well. Tierra Lasker (5’0 sophomore) will play as back up to Croft at the point position, while Misty Bowden (5’3 senior guard) and Shelby Ryals (5’2 junior guard) are looking to solidify the team’s bench. The addition of Webb, Carter, Walter and Lasker – bulk of sophomore class that returns after a 19-3 run through its junior high schedule, has Frizzell thinking this could be his first team to make the Class 3A State Tournament. “Their arrival to the senior high team helps us in so many ways”, he explained. “Most of them are ready to be immediate contributors, and that’s huge for this team since depth is an issue this year. We only have 10 names to work with, but thanks to the high level of play of some of these new additions, we’ll be very flexible in terms of substitutions. I feel like over the next few years, we’re going to be pretty good.” In a conference loaded with talented teams, margins for error are very small. Panthers Capable Of Pulling Off Another Deep Playoff Run Finishing the 2010-11 season with a 27-8 overall record (13-1 in conference) and making it all the way to the state tournament quarterfinals doesn’t seem to be enough for Heber Springs and Kevin Kyzer. Austin Brown

John Price

Entering his third year as Panthers’ head coach, Kyzer demands more from his players and expects them to defend their 2-4A Conference title to the best of their abilities. “I think we have a good chance of building on last season’s accomplishments thanks to our size and talent”, he says. “We’re more gifted and bigger than we were a year ago and despite losing four of our starters, I believe we’re capable of pulling off

another deep playoff run.” Austin Brown (6’3 senior guard) is a two-time all-state returnee who averaged 16.5 points and 12 rebounds per game. He is expected to have another stellar season and lead the Panthers in all segments of the game along with fellow senior John Price (6’0 point guard) who is a tremendous scorer but was ineligible to play a year ago. Judson Smith (6’0 junior guard) will contribute to the outside game as a strong 3-point shooter, while Mason Schroeder (6’5 sophomore center) is expected to be a monster presence and control the paint. Additionally, Austin Adkins, Aaron Brown, Michael Kramer and Waren Olmstead are among Panthers’ players looking to make a steady impact off the bench and help their scoring game. Inexperience might be a hindrance for this team, but to bet against the Panthers this early in the season seems rather foolish. Kyzer possesses the right pieces in terms of talent, size and team chemistry, and if his Panthers can avoid major injuries then Heber Springs’ faithful are in for yet another memorable season in 2011-12.

COURT Riddle Expects Season To Be A Daunting Challenge Heber Springs Lady Panthers have lost four starters from a team that finished the 2010-11 season with a 25-6 overall record (won the 2-4A Conference title) and return a total of only three players from that roster. Entering his 12th season as head coach, Jamey Riddle, expects the new season to be a daunting challenge but remains hopeful about his squad’s Magen LaRosa chances. “Exceeding the great success from last year will be tough, but with the way the girls are practicing and the sophomores are stepping up, I think we have a chance to do that”, Riddle said. “Hopefully, if they can get their confidence early and find their roles on the team, you never know what can happen. It will be hard to match last year, but I think this bunch can do it.”

While the Lady Panthers have been working hard at practice, it is difficult to predict how far they will go – mainly because of their lack of experience. “We are aware of the challenges that lay ahead of us”, Riddle said. “We’re an unproven team with a bunch of girls who lack experience. Getting our sophomores acclimated to senior high basketball could turn out to be the deciding factor in our success this season.”

Magen LaRosa (5’10 post player) is a senior and team’s lone returning starter in 201112. She averaged 9 points and 5 rebounds per game last season and has the most experience on Riddle’s roster. Devrie Attendorn (guard) is expected to contribute to the outside game as she enters her junior year. Riddle said Attendorn played off and on last season, but does bring some experience. “We’ll be relying heavily on her to just run the offenses”, Riddle said. “Magen will be our go-to player, but Devrie’s ability to control the tempo and knock down some outside shots will be crucial to our success this year.”

Yellow Jackets Rookie Coach Says Team Giving 100% At Practice For a team that finished with a dismal 3-20 overall record and placed last in 4A-2 Conference last season, the arrival of first year coach Ben Lindsey seems like the breath of fresh air everyone’s been waiting on. Lindsey, who was an assistant to Mike Anderson at the University of Missouri for five years (current University of Arkansas head coach), hopes to install a winning mentality and turn around the struggling Yellow Jackets through good old bluecollar effort. “Right now the kids have to learn how to win and playing for a new coach has its adjustment phase”, Lindsey says. “They are working hard and my hope is that we can get acclimated to each other as soon as possible. Winning a few games early in the season would give us a huge lift.” Clinton lone returning starter is a 6’3 senior Michael Sykes, and Lindsey expects to rely on him to provide the team with interior presence along with fellow 6’2 power forward Kendall Bates.

The rookie coach also added that he has been rather surprised and pleased with his team’s work ethic in the offseason and hopes that such commitment continues throughout the rest of the year. “The boys come to work every day and give me their best effort no matter how long or how short our practices are. When we’re out here, they’re always giving their 100% and that will only make them better.”

Guards Park Parish and Taylor Gray are both entering their senior years as well. They are expected to run a different offense than years past since Lindsey hopes to implement bits of the same style he and coach Anderson had at Missouri. “Our systems won’t be mirror images. That’s not what we’re trying to accomplish here”, Lindsey explains. “There will be some similarities of course, but

Corene Knoerr, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, is the team’s defensive specialist and has recorded 75 blocks in 2010. Knoerr is expected to provide leadership with fellow seniors Mary Duke and Justine King who will control the game’s tempo from the perimeter. With only 8 names on the roster and just one returning starter, Gentry knows that in order to repeat those numbers, the margin for errors has to drop significantly. “This year our main problem will be depth and experience”, Haley Delk Gentry says. “I have only 1 returning starter that has played a lot of minutes for me. Seniors William Ward and Daniel Lary look primed to take on the roles of offensive leaders and fill the voids left by the last year’s trio Danell Henderson, Brandon Rooney and Brian Hooten. “Those 3 guys were our All-State players a year ago, and replacing them will be rather difficult”, Hutchcraft offers. “Ward and Lary are very gifted young players and I expect them to do a good job for us. I imagine they will need a short period of adjustment early on, but as the season progresses they should get better and more comfortable in their new roles.”

The rest of the starting lineup spots will be filled by Darius Young (guard), Irish Fitzgerald (post), and Garrett Whisenhart (guard), while Hutchcraft hopes to receive strong contributions off the bench from Trey Owens, Jimmy Miller, and Zach Hartwick. The biggest setback for the Thunderbirds thus far has been the injury of guard Austin Rimmers who was a potential starter. “Austin was our best perimeter shooter and losing him hurts us tremendously”, Hutchcraft explains. “Our bench is far weaker now, and we simply don’t have an adequate replacement for a player of his skills.” Nevertheless, the winning mentality of Guy-Perkins will not change. Hutchcraft still believes his team is capable of making a deep post-season run: “Our goal is to get to the state tournament”, he concludes. “From that point on anything is possible. We’ve lived up to our expectations in the past, and our standards will not change this year.”

Outstanding Attitudes And Winning Personalities Drives Team Towards State Tournament Following the same rich tradition as the senior boys’ team, the Lady Thunderbirds of Guy Perkins have been a powerhouse team throughout the past years, winning several state championships and state runner-ups. This year, head coach John Hutchcraft will have a roster of ten names, and expects all of them to be in rotation as the season tips off. “This year will be very exciting for us”, Hutchcraft says. “We are very deep and we’ll have a ten-player rotation. Other than winning our games, my biggest desire in 2011-12 is for everyone to get an equal amount of playing time and contribute to our success.” Alexis Hogan is expected to assume the role of the team’s go-to player and therefore fill the void left by Laney Legacy (Arkansas All-State Team in 2010-11). Hogan (5-foot-10, sophomore) is a skilled swingman who started all 30 games as a freshman last season. She will be joined by Lyndsie McChee (senior, pointguard), Ashley Hicks (guard, sophomore), Cari Beth Halk (junior, post) and Jennifer Turnage (senior, guard) in the starting lineup, while Victoria Rodgers, Rachel Tackett, Kendra Bivens, Elizabeth Webber and Ashley Ray are likely to contribute off the bench.

Entering his 12th season at Mount VernonEnola, coach Justin Rodgers is confident in his squad but faces a difficult task of replacing four players from his starting lineup. “With only one returning starter, lack of experience looks to be our biggest weakness this year”, Rodgers says. “Unfortunately, that’s one segment of the game that we can’t prepare for in advance. Lady Warhawks Having a total of only eight, largely inexperienced players on their roster in 2010-11 did little to prevent the Lady Warhawks from reaching the state tournament and finishing the season with a remarkable 25-10 overall record. Entering his 15th year as head coach, Freeman Isaacs expects to have all of his key players back for another run, as well as a roster with 18 names on it. He believes that the team’s winning ways will continue in the upcoming season thanks to the experience they’ve gained in 2010-11. “We were really young last year and only had eight players, including two freshmen. We’re still young, but at least we have 18 players on the roster now”, Isaacs said. “Out of the ten games we lost, we probably lost six in the fourth quarter. We hope that the experience we’ve gained since then can help us be a little more relaxed going into those pressure situations now.”

Adam Caudill (sophomore point guard) will be the go-to player for the Warhawks in 2011-12. He started all 30 games as a freshman, and is expected to provide them with steadiness and leadership on both ends of the floor. Rodgers places much hope on this basketball prospect Among returning players that started last year and anticipates him to develop into a true leader are Heather Prowse (sophomore guard), Kathryn before his high school career is over, “Adam Barlee (junior guard), Shana Smith (junior will be a great player very soon”, he says. “He guard), Emily Jobe (sophomore post), Katie is extremely talented and works very hard. A schedule filled with names of powerhouses like Guy-Perkins, Rose Bud, Concord, and Shirley looks imposing, even to more experienced teams than the 2011-12 Warhawks. Nevertheless, Rodgers is pleased with his squad’s effort thus far and doesn’t shy away from any upcoming challenges. “We are well aware of the level of competition we will face this year”, he concludes. “However, all of these kids have worked extremely hard to be where they are right now, and giving up is not something they’re ready to do. Our goal remains to get back to the state tournament.”

Regardless of their ongoing problems, Isaacs remains hopeful about their chances and believes his team is capable of repeating last season’s success. “We have been in the fire, and we have learned a whole lot from year’s experience”, he explained. “Our main concern is to stay healthy and learn how to use the clock as an ally to slow things down when we have a late lead. If we’re successful in these two areas, I have no doubt in my mind that the rest of the things will fall right in their place as well.”

Ramblers Welch Determined To Capitalize On Painful Memories Nick Cartwright

Brad Lumpkin

Our interview with Rose Bud’s head coach Rob Welch on his team this year could be summarized with two simple words – antipathy and determination. The first word relates to the bitter taste of Welch’s rookie season as head basketball coach in which his team suffered a major letdown. The effects of such turbulent and disappointing season are still largely felt by everyone involved with the Ramblers, but Welch is determined to capitalize on those painful memories from the past and provide this year’s Rose Bud squad with more than enough fire to turn things around. The word “determination” comes in play here, reflecting the players’ positive attitudes and their hunger to prove all of their doubters wrong. Welch certainly looks poised to bring back the winning ways to the team who won the 2008 Boys 3A State title, as his expectations couldn’t be any higher: “I expect us to be very competitive this season. Our guys have worked hard during the off-season and are excited about the upcoming year. We have good size and great speed. We’ve got some depth and a great group of guys to coach. interesting player in this bunch. He finished his sophomore season in a very promising fashion and led the team in scoring in their last few games. He is expected to continue with his improvement and Welch hopes he could soon become one of his go-to-guys. Athleticism and depth don’t seem to be a concern for this squad. Ramblers are looking to play an exciting, up-tempo style on offense where they can take advantage of their exceptional speed and quickness, while the team’s depth will allow them to put pressure on their opponents with high intensity defense. “Athleticism and depth will certainly be our strengths. We have moved up a very athletic group of sophomores and these younger guys will complement our returning players to give us more options on both ends of the floor. We have a good group of kids that work very hard. They want to win and are willing to put in the effort that makes winning possible. I believe that we are 8-9 players deep this year, possibly even 10.” How far will the Ramblers go this season, remains to be seen? Conference rivals Harding Academy and Riverview all look to have strong seasons as well, and will present a challenge for the largely unproven Ramblers. Consistency and fundamentals on both offense and defense will be major factors in their success. Welch

remains optimistic when talking about Ramblers’ goal to reestablish their winning identity: “I am excited about the upcoming season. We’ve got a great group of kids and they possess the skills necessary to take us far this year. They are well-disciplined and have worked hard to earn a better understanding of the game. Lady Ramblers Goodwin Began Season With A Good Mix Of Experience And Speed

Tori Willburg

Sara Sartin

In 2010-11 the Lady Ramblers enjoyed one of the most successful regular seasons in recent school history, but couldn’t quite capitalize on their success come playoff time. The overall record of 26-4 (9-1 in conference), however, speaks for itself, and head coach Mandy Goodwin expects her team to build on it and play at an even higher level this year – especially in the post-season. “We played steady throughout the whole season last year. Appeared to play our best basketball during the district tournament and finished it with only one loss on the season. Following district we seemed to never find out touch again, wining only one game before going on an 0-3 run to end the season. We hope to turn it around this year and go deep in the regional and state playoffs. We are definitely capable of it.”

Goodwin certainly appears to have a good mix of experience and youth in her team. Out of 21 names on the team roster, 8 of them are returning lettermen. The Lady Ramblers look to use that experience along with their speed, but coach Goodwin hopes they can also improve other areas of their game such as half-court offense and ball movement. “Up-tempo game is something I would like to see for the most part of this season. Tori Lemieux We’re going to look for easy ways to score the ball, but in order to make it deep into the playoffs, other segments of our game need to be just as strong ”, Goodwin explains. “We hope to be one of those teams that have the ability to score from multiple positions. Everything we do will be achieved through team concept, which depends on all players to do their assigned chores. It is easy to key on one or two players, but very difficult to guard all five on the floor that work together to find the best shot on each possession.” Certain voids need to be filled, especially on defense, but Goodwin anticipates that the more experienced players such as seniors Tori Willburg and Lauren Wynne can assist the team

in terms of leadership and making sure that everyone knows their roles. Willburg is expected to be the team’s leading scorer this season, while Wynne (coming off an ACL tear) should provide the much needed inside presence and rebounding.

The strength of this team will be in their numbers, as Goodwin plans to implement a team oriented system on both offense and defense. Seniors Sara Sartin, Tori Lemieux and Madelyn Murphree will add experience on several positions, especially on the defensive end, while juniors Kyndl Harlan and Jessi Mann look to boost the offense with their outside shooting and ability to break down defenses in transition. “As of now, it looks like we are going to be very deep at guard positions”, Goodwin says. “Unlike some other teams, we’ll be able to keep speed on the floor throughout the entire game and we must take advantage of that. The key, however, will be to learn how to be consistent and understand our strengths night in and night out.” High expectations surround this team, and by the looks of it, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to think that the Lady Ramblers can do damage this year and finish the season strong, even against tough competition like Mountain View, Harding or Bald Knob. Coach Goodwin offers a measured dosage of optimism speaking of her squad: “I am very proud of my girls for overcoming adversities they have faced through the summer. We will not only prove to be a stronger, mentally tougher team on the floor, but I believe more importantly, we will be better individuals off the floor with a strong bond and taking nothing for granted. We have all learned that this is a fun sport which leaves many short of their individual expectations, but the reality of that taught us that we must meet life with faith and never be short of it.”

HOW ARE BASKETBALL INJURIES TREATED? Ankle Sprains Treatment for an ankle sprain involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). The need for X-rays and evaluation by a physician is determined on a case-by-case basis and depends on the severity and location of pain. Pain and swelling over the bone itself may need further evaluation. An injury to the ankle in a child who is still growing could represent a simple sprain or could be the result of an injury to the growth plates located around the ankle and should be evaluated by a physician. Jammed Fingers Jammed fingers occur when the ball contacts the end of the finger and causes significant swelling of a single joint. Application of ice and buddy taping the finger to the adjacent finger may provide some relief and allow the athlete to return to play. If pain and swelling persist, evaluation by a physician or athletic trainer is recommended and an x-ray of the finger may be needed. Knee Injuries Basketball requires extensive stop and go and cutting maneuvers which can put the ligaments and menisci of the knee at risk. Injury to the medial collateral ligament is most common following a blow to the outside of the knee and can be often treated with ice, bracing and a gradual return to activity. An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament is a more serious injury and can occir with an abrupt change in direction ad landing for the jump. Although this ligament tear is most commonly a season ending injury that requires corrective surgery, current techniques used to repair the ACL ligament generally allow the player to return to play the following season. Deep Thigh Bruising Treatment uncludes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Commercially available girdles with thigh pads are now available for protection. Facial Cuts Depending on the depth of the injury, the cut may require stitches or a “butterfly” sterile tape. Ice may provide pain relief and decrease swelling. Players can return to play after all blood is removed and the wound is dressed. Stress Fractures Stress fractures can occur from a rapid increase in activity level or training or from overtraining. Stress fractures in basketball most commonly occur in the foot and lower leg (tibia). Once diagosed, a period of immobilization and non-weight bearing is recommended. Return to play is permitted once the fracture has completely healed and the athlete is pain free.

HOW CAN BASKETBALL INJURIES PREVENTED? • Have a pre-season physical examination and follow your doctor’s recommendations • Hydrate adequately-waiting until you are thirsty is often too late to hydrate properly • Pay attention to environmental recommendations, especially in relation to excessively hot and humid weather, to help avoid heat illness • Maintain proper fitness - injury rates are higher in athletes who have not adequately prepared physically • After a period of inactivity, progress gradually back to full-contact basketball through activities such as aerobic conditioning, strength training, and agility training. • Avoid overuse injuries - more is not always better! Many sports medicine specialists believe that it is beneficial to take at least one season off each year. Try to avoid the pressure that is now exerted on many young athletes to over-train. Listen to your body and decrease training time and intensity of pain or discomfort develops. This will reduce the risk of injury and help avoid “burn-out.” • Talk with your coach and/or athletic trainer about an ACL injury prevention program and incorporating the training principles into team warm-ups • The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a health care professional. Williamson Expecting... Big Turnaround The University of Central Arkansas men’s basketball team ended the 2010-11 season with a dreadful 5-24 overall record (1-15 in Southland Conference). Heading into his second season with the Bears, head coach Corliss Williamson expects to turn things around in Conway and improve on those numbers as quickly as possible.

during the offseason looking for prospective quality recruits. “This summer has been really busy for us”, Williamson said. “We had a couple of guys who sat out last year because of injuries, and six seniors who graduated. We looked to find the right players for our program – ones that will help us establish a winning mentality and fit in well with the rest of the squad. I’m very pleased with the job that we were able to do thus far.”

The Bears enter the new season with a revamped roster. Six seniors from last year (TK Smith, Tadre Sheppard, Carlos Dos Williamson and his staff added a couple of familiar faces to the Santos, Mike Pouncy, Imad Qahwash and Jacquan McClinton) Bears’ program – the former Conway High talent Jarvis Garner are no longer with the team, so the coaching staff remained busy (6-foot-6, 220-pound forward) and Robert Crawford (6-foot-5,

195-pound guard) now in his second stint with UCA. Garner averaged 14 points and nine rebounds per game at Connors and was nominated for the NJCAA Region 2 Player of the Year. Garner was on the All-State team at Conway High School and was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 2009 Arkansas High School All-Star Game. Crawford averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Connors and was named to the All-NJCAA Region 2 first team. He was also an honorable mention JUCO All-American. Both players are expected to have an immediate impact on the team and Coach Williamson doesn’t lack enthusiasm. “We’re excited about having Jarvis come back home. I coached against him at Arkansas Baptist. He brings a lot of versatility. He can play two or three positions, in our style of play and in our conference. He’s definitely going to be an immediate impact for us and we definitely expect some big things from him.” Addition of players like Crawford will bring a new aspect to the Bears’ lineup. “Robert is a good talent,’ said Williamson. “He loves the game, he has a great knowledge of the game and he respects the game. He brings versatility as well, from a two guard to a small forward. He had the ability to knock down the three; he can post up smaller guards. His mid-range is one of the best I’ve seen in a while in a college athlete.” Garner and Crawford join four other new recruits for the Bears in 2011, including Anthony Borden from Holmes Community College, Darius Singleton from Sachse (Texas) High School, Malcolm Canada from Akins High School in Austin, Texas, and Carlin Bremner, from North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, N.C. Williamson expects each of these players to have an immediate impact. “We want these guys to come in and feel comfortable in the new system. We have a lot of versatility in this bunch, and almost everyone can play multiple positions for us out there. I think these guys are all going to come in and have an immediate impact on our team and how we play and how competitive we are.”

The rest of UCA’s squad looks very formidable as well. The Bears will rely heavily on seniors Mark Rutledge (6-foot-4, 180-pound guard) and Dewan Clayborn (5-foot-11, 180-pound guard) to provide the team with enough offense. Rutledge averaged 9.6 points per game and was the team’s second leading scorer behind Imad Qahwash, while Clayborn averaged 8.7 points per game and ranked fifth in conference with 1.6 steals per game. Both players are looking to improve on those numbers and provide the team with much needed leadership. One of the key issues for the Bears this season will be the fan support at Ferris Center where they hope to generate the necessary toughness and ability to compete with other programs. “Establishing a winning attitude here at home is going to start with our fans. We had a great turnout last year when people came to the games to support us through bad weather”, Williamson explains. “That’s just an issue that we’re going to challenge this season. We want to challenge our community, and challenge our school to have more people come out to the games and take pride in us and what we do. We feel like if we play hard and compete, that will help us bring more fans to support us, and that’s always a good sign – a sign of a winning program. You have to have a good, strong fan base to be a top notch team, and we’re definitely working on attaining that.”

Sugar Bears

Sugar Bears Return Southland Conference Player Of The Year The Sugar Bears ended their first year out of the Division I reclassification period with their second consecutive 21-win season (11-5 in conference). More importantly however, the team enjoyed its first-ever NCAA Division I postseason tournament game against UAB in front of a record crowd of 2,953 people, and even though they didn’t win it, Central Arkansas is looking to ride that momentum into the 11-12 season. Sugar Bears head coach Matt Daniel wasn’t shy in expressing his satisfaction with last year’s success. “I was very happy with the way things played out for us. If we’d have won the game against UAB, we’d have advanced further and I’d have gotten to coach another game. But it’s been a good year, we learned a lot and that’s something we were able to take into the offseason with us and feel pretty

good about it. It’s hard to put into words everything this team’s accomplished in back-to-back years. We get to hang a banner in here for going to a postseason tournament, and that’s something that will never be removed. This team is the first one to do that in Division I. I asked them to do me one favor – make sure it’s not the last.” Whether they can do it again in 2011-12, remains to be seen as the Sugar Bears are scheduled to test themselves early with a pair of marquee games against Indiana and Alabama on Nov. 11 and 15 – marking the first time UCA will have hosted a Big Ten or SEC basketball team. “This is a big-time non-conference schedule,” said Daniel, who will enter his fourth season at the school. “The opportunity to have these big name programs on our campus should speak volumes to how much we’ve grown in a very short time. It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase to our community and state that we are here and that women’s basketball is important. Our crowds have grown exponentially over the last couple years, but with a schedule like this we hope and anticipate the crowd of 3,000 we had in postseason play last year becomes a

Sugar Bears’ best player, Megan Herbert, shares her coach’s Sugar Bears have had a successful offseason as well and managed enthusiasm and adds, “Our expectations are high. A New Coach, New System, CBC Men’s Team an Exciting Brand Of Basketball As the 2011-12 season approaches, Central Baptist College men’s basketball team is headed towards an unknown territory. Rookie head coach, Tony Price, who comes to CBC after serving the last two years as a independent state scout for several junior colleges, most notably Colby Community College in Kansas, faces a daunting task with a roster of 15 names – only 3 of which are returning lettermen. Introduced as the new head coach in May this year, Price replaces Josh Austin, who resigned after five seasons with the Mustangs to take the head job at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge. “I’m very excited about this opportunity”, he said. “We’ve got a couple of good players coming back and I’ve been hitting the recruiting trail hard ever since I got here. There’s just so much on the horizon.”

and Gavin are our returning offensive and defensive leaders and we expect them to give us another solid year”, Price said. “Both players will be asked to provide leadership considering that we are a very young and inexperienced bunch. Dane, Xavier and DC will compete for the remaining two spots which at the moment are up for grabs.” A new head coach, a new system and a vast majority of the team made up of freshmen and sophomores do not inspire much confidence to the spectators around Central Baptist. The Mustangs finished last season with a 13-14 overall record, but that doesn’t seem to temper Price’s expectations for 2011-12, “My expectations are high”, he said. “Our conference is a tough conference. We have a difficult start of the season with Arkansas State - Southern Arkansas, Arkansas Tech-Christian Brothers Union, and Harding, and I’ve been told by quite a few folks that we’re not expected to win any of these games. I haven’t seen any of these teams on film yet, but we’re going to have an up-tempo style of play. We’re going to press our opponents on both ends of the court and try to have an exciting brand of basketball. “

Seniors Tommy Williams (6-foot-3, forward) and Gavin McDaniel (6-foot-6, center/power forward) are expected to form the nucleus of the Mustangs’ new system, and with the addition of gifted freshman, Spencer Caraway (6-foot-5, forward), they are looking to establish themselves as the team’s go-to-guys. Dane Lottner, Xavier Lindsey and DC Green are amongst other prominent “I believe that with hard work and good system we can be very players who will look to earn a spot in the starting lineup. “Tommy successful this year”, Price added.

Lady Warriors Returns Familiar Faces... And Looks To Much Smoother Year

Anna Roane

Avery Roller

Caty Hensy

Finishing her rookie campaign with a 17-11 overall record doesn’t impress the Lady Warriors head coach Emily Cummings. In fact, it only supplies her with added motivation to do better this year. “Our record really does no justice to what our team accomplished last season. We struggled in the first half because I was new to them and they had to learn the new system”, Cummings said. “The second half of the season, however, we came together and bought in to what we wanted to do on both ends of the floor. We went on a great winning streak to end the season and win our West Division but, unfortunately, fell short to DePauw University in the conference championship finals. That loss has certainly inspired us to work hard this summer in order to finish better and erase the bitterness out of our mouths.”

threat by shooting a sound 37.7% from beyond the arc. Roane is expected to be joined by fellow seniors Avery Roller, Samantha Devlin, Katy Ashley-Pauley and Caty Hensy in the starting lineup, thus establishing one of the most experienced lineups in the league this year. Katy Ashley-Pauley who is the team’s returning offensive leader expects to make a statement in her final season at Hendrix, but also help with the development of younger players in order to keep the program competitive in the years to come. Another key returnee is the second-year center, Jamie Tate, who averaged 7 points and 9 rebounds per game in her freshman year at Hendrix. Although undersized at her position, Tate is expected to see more playing time of the bench in 2011-12 and will look to improve her numbers. Coach Cummings expresses her satisfaction with the team’s unity and ability to play as one. “We are extremely lucky to have seven seniors on our team this season”, Cummings says. “Our level of chemistry couldn’t be better, and the girls have a wonderful sense to read and react off of each other. Those are two very important things in basketball, and seeing them this early in the season is always a sign of nice thing to come.”

Entering the new season, Lady Warriors will have a roster of 14 players – 9 who are returning lettermen. With so many familiar faces, Cummings hopes for a smoother year, particularly on offense where she expects to implement both 4 in – 1 out, and 3 in – 2 out Tightening up the half-court defense is still a concern for dribble drive systems.
