Cool weather, the smell of popcorn, and November can mean only one thing – BASKETBALL season has arrived! The sweet sound of the orange ball bouncing on the hardwood and ripping through the net can be heard in arenas all over the country. The anticipation is building, the pressure is on, and the excitement is in the air. As the seasons begins, we are pleased to bring you the most extensive coverage of both boys and girls basketball that has ever been seen in the River Valley. From the largest school in the area, the tradition-rich Arkansas Tech University, to the smallest, the ever exciting Hector High School, basketball season brings new hopes and expectations for success to each campus. Join us as we take you through an in-depth look at River Valley basketball teams of 2011-2012, including Russellville Junior High Eastside and Westside. Our preseason preview will put into your hands the most collective insight available. We have traveled to all the schools and have asked all the questions necessary to put into perspective each team as well as their competition. Basketball has always been a well-supported tradition in the River Valley communities. This area takes pride in having produced players such as former NBA great and Arkansas Razorback Final 4 MVP Corliss Williamson from Russellville. Basketball has touched nearly every household in every town we have covered, and as people who live and breathe basketball, we know how hard it is to keep up with everything that’s going on, especially if your favorite teams don’t get enough state or national exposure. For these reasons, we have poured ourselves into this inaugural publication of the River Valley Hoops Magazine. In order to meet the expectations of fans, players, parents and coaches, we have put together a winning team of dedicated writers, editors, designers, interns, and sales staff to bring you this first edition. Our goal is simple – to turn a massive, full color, comprehensive mirror on basketball in this area. We wish to portray each of these teams with the articles, stats, recruiting information, photography, and analysis they deserve, and to reflect the passion we have witnessed with our own eyes every time we have walked into their high school or college arenas. As every player and coach well knows, it takes determination, commitment, passion, and toughness to be a basketball player on any level. Our goal is to make this known to everyone, because those traits are displayed by every player listed in this publication and in thousands more who lace up their shoes and give it their all for their team and community. We are very proud of the 2011-2012 River Valley Hoops Magazine. We hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed publishing it, and that this just the first of many more exciting issues to come. Now let’s get down to basketball… The staff of The River Valley Hoops Magazine, Published by WMP Marketing Russellville, AR www.arsports.net

By Kristin Hare Not every child that plays basketball will make it to the NBA, but it doesn’t mean they can’t feel like a star when they’re on the court. The Shooting for Success program does just that. Shooting for Success is an extracurricular basketball league for kids with special needs. It is held throughout the month of October at First Baptist Church in Russellville. Brandi Akin, an Occupational Therapist in the River Valley, began the program four years ago as a student at the University of Central Arkansas. “Each member of my class was given the assignment to find an occupational therapy need in their community and create a way to meet that need.” Akin grew up playing basketball, and it was her love of the game and her desire to become a pediatric OT that developed into Shooting for Success. “After a lot of research, planning and many phone calls, it was obvious that our community needed a program like this, but I couldn’t get it started alone. If this was going to happen, I was going to need a location and a lot of volunteers,” Akin explains. Jay Ham, the Minister of Church Recreation, Outreach and Missions at First Baptist Church in Russellville, partnered with Akin to help coordinate the event each week. He also arranged for the program to be held in the church’s gym. “It is our privilege as a church to host such an awesome outreach,” says Ham. “It is pretty cool that is started off as a school assignment, and it has grown into what it is today.” During the first year of the program, there were twelve kids that participated in Shooting for Success, but with word continuing to spread, they have nearly quadrupled their total participants for the 2011-year. The number of volunteers needed has also increased over the years. There are one hundred volunteers that aid in the success of the program. “We pair each child with a volunteer,” explains Akin.

“The volunteers are there to encourage, direct and assist the child during each game.” Anna Bailey has been a league volunteer for the past three years. “Shooting for Success is a great outreach opportunity,” says Bailey. “Most of these kids had never played basketball before this program came along. It allows them to get out on the court, have some fun, and make new friends. Seeing the smiles on their faces makes everything we do as volunteers worth it.” Looking around the gym on game night, it is obvious how the kids and their parents feel about Shooting for Success. “As a parent, I love the Shooting for Success program! It is a way that my son has the opportunity to play a team sport that he likes,” says Cynthia Ellsworth. Garrett, Ellsworth’s son, has participated in the program since it’s beginning in 2008. “It is wonderful to see him make a basket and feel good about himself,” says Ellsworth.

“It is so encouraging to see everyone (the crowd, the players and the volunteers) cheering for all the players. Everyone is a winner!” As for what Garrett has to say about the Shooting For Success program, “It is something fun to do.” The Shooting for Success basketball league isn’t about winning or losing a game. It is far more important than that. Shooting for Success is about reaching beyond the disabilities these kids face on a day-to-day basis, and discovering they are far more capable then they ever thought possible. HOW ARE BASKETBALL INJURIES TREATED? Ankle Sprains Treatment for an ankle sprain involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). The need for X-rays and evaluation by a physician is determined on a case-by-case basis and depends on the severity and location of pain. Pain and swelling over the bone itself may need further evaluation. An injury to the ankle in a child who is still growing could represent a simple sprain or could be the result of an injury to the growth plates located around the ankle and should be evaluated by a physician. Jammed Fingers Jammed fingers occur when the ball contacts the end of the finger and causes significant swelling of a single joint. Application of ice and buddy taping the finger to the adjacent finger may provide some relief and allow the athlete to return to play. If pain and swelling persist, evaluation by a physician or athletic trainer is recommended and an x-ray of the finger may be needed. Knee Injuries Basketball requires extensive stop and go and cutting maneuvers which can put the ligaments and menisci of the knee at risk. Injury to the medial collateral ligament is most common following a blow to the outside of the knee and can be often treated with ice, bracing and a gradual return to activity. An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament is a more serious injury and can occir with an abrupt change in direction ad landing for the jump. Although this ligament tear is most commonly a season ending injury that requires corrective surgery, current techniques used to repair the ACL ligament generally allow the player to return to play the following season. Deep Thigh Bruising Treatment uncludes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Commercially available girdles with thigh pads are now available for protection. Facial Cuts Depending on the depth of the injury, the cut may require stitches or a “butterfly” sterile tape. Ice may provide pain relief and decrease swelling. Players can return to play after all blood is removed and the wound is dressed.

late to hydrate properly • Pay attention to environmental recommendations, especially in relation to excessively hot and humid weather, to help avoid heat illness • Maintain proper fitness - injury rates are higher in athletes who have not adequately prepared physically • After a period of inactivity, progress gradually back to full-contact basketball through activities such as aerobic conditioning, strength training, and agility training. • Avoid overuse injuries - more is not always better! Many sports medicine specialists believe that it is beneficial to take at least one season off each year. Try to avoid the pressure that is now exerted on many young athletes to over-train. Listen to your body and decrease training time and intensity of pain or discomfort develops. This will reduce the risk of injury and help avoid “burn-out.” • Talk with your coach and/or athletic trainer about an ACL injury prevention program and incorporating the training principles into team warm-ups • The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a health care professional. Sports Tips provide general information only and are not a substitute for your own good judgement or consultation with a physician. To order multiple copies of this fact sheet or learn more about sports injury prevention.

Stress Fractures Stress fractures can occur from a rapid increase in activity level or training or from overtraining. Stress fractures in basketball most commonly occur in the foot and lower leg (tibia). Once diagosed, a period of immobilization and non-weight bearing is recommended. Return to play is permitted once the fracture has completely healed and the athlete is pain free.

HOW CAN BASKETBALL INJURIES PREVENTED? • Have a pre-season physical examination and follow your doctor’s recommendations • Hydrate adequately-waiting until you are thirsty is often too Pg. 12 • River Valley HOOPS 2011

Russellville

Cyclones

A Mann with a Plan for the Cyclones

After seven years as the assistant coach for the Russellville Cyclones, Codey Mann takes over as head coach. Dexter Hendrix has joined the staff as his assistant. Mann has awaited such a leadership opportunity and is excited that it has happened in Russellville. His goal is to build pride and enthusiasm for the Cyclone basketball program. He wants to promote Cyclone basketball by encouraging boys to get interested and involved at a young age. Mann plans to spend more time working with the middle school and junior high teams, as well as boys of all ages in the Russellville School District that want to become better basketball players. As far as the 2011-2012 Cyclones, Mann knows that the key to a successful season is being able to win the close games. Mann said, “We lost a lot of close games last year. A play here or there and we could have had a different season.” The Cyclones have put in several days and hours of practice this summer. They played in several Hoop Play USA

Pg. 18 • River Valley HOOPS 2011

tournaments and Mann thinks this experience will carry them a long way. He commented, “The boys had a great summer. We were in the gym at least 5 days a week for 3 hours a day and on some days we were in the gym 7 days a week. We learned how to win this summer, and the boys expected to win every game they played.”

Mann is counting on team chemistry, experience, and outside shooting this season. The Cyclones have 3 starters returning and he feels that they are all great leaders. Senior guard/forward Grey Harris (6’3”) led the team in scoring last year averaging 16.3 p.p.g. Harris is an overall great player that makes others around him better. He averaged 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Chris Washington will begin his third season as the starting Cyclone point guard. He averaged 14.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game as a junior. Mann knows that in order for the Cyclones to win

www.arsports.net

those close games his point guard must step up late in those games. The third returning starter is Eric Turner. Turner is a (6’4”) guard/forward that can hit 3’s from anywhere on the court. Turner led the team in rebounding a year ago averaging 7.4 per game. He averaged 10.2 points and 2.4 assists per game. For the Cyclones to improve from last year’s campaign Turner must become more of an inside scoring threat.

“Every team in our conference will be good; there are not any easy nights.” With that said the head Cyclone knows that his team must improve defensively. He has implemented a tough and physical man defense during the off-season. You can expect the Cyclones to pick up the tempo on offense. Most nights they will be undersized, and Mann knows that they will need to use their speed and quickness to be successful.

The Cyclones are loaded with seniors this year. Jordan Barrett (6’0”), Kyle Jones (6’0”), Brandon George (6’3”), and Michael Sacrey (6’1”) all bring varsity experience to the team. Mann knows that the work that these young men put in this summer will benefit the Cyclones this season. Junior Dakota Young (6’3”) has developed his skills over the past year and Mann feels that he could LISTEN TO THE GAME ON give the varsity team some good minutes off the bench. Juniors Mason Freeman , Wes Prewett, Dre Johnson, and Landon Kordsmeier will all be or on the internet at working this off-season for a spot on the varsity team. Mann is excited about sophomore guard Jalen Curtis (5’9”). Curtis could provide depth at the point position before the end of the season for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones will be competing in the 6A/7A Central Conference. This is considered by most people in the state as one of the toughest conferences. Mann says,

Russellville

Lady Cyclones Lady Cyclones Seek First State Title in 34 Years The Russellville Lady Cyclones have been waiting for a senior class like the 2012 class for many years. This group of young ladies has been one of the most successful teams in Russellville from 7th grade to high school. Coach Steve Weidower in his 3rd season at the helm knows that this could be a banner year. Coming off a state quarterfinal appearance, the Lady Cyclones have been preparing for the upcoming season since their heartbreaking loss to Van Buren in the 2011 6A State Tournament at Marion. They return all five starters and six of their top seven from a team that went 22-7. One thing that is special about this group of Lady Cyclone seniors is that they are very unselfish and they know that it will take teamwork to achieve their two main goals, a conference title and state title. Each senior brings a different strength to the team. Guard Mary Carol Davis (5’11”) does all the little things that coaches love. She is a tremendous defensive player that led

One of the players Class: 6A that takes advantage of this is Conference: East sharp shooter senior forward Kaylee Weidower (5’10”). Point guard Susan Taylor (5’6”), has become one of the leaders of this team. She plays the game with a great deal of passion and has the will to do whatever it takes to win. Taylor averaged 7.4 points per game and had several big scoring nights last year. Forward Natalie Shockey (6’1”) gives the Lady Cyclones an inside outside scoring threat. Shockey is able to hit the three as well as post up in the paint averaging 8.6 p.p.g. in 2010-2011. Post Lindsey Glover (6’0”) is the most physical player for the Lady Cyclones and spends most night battling it out in the paint. Glover knocked down 6.2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds

per contest a year ago. Guard Sara Prochazka (5’6”) is the spark plug off the bench for the senior class. She is one of the best athletes on the floor and gives the Lady Cyclones a boost on both defense and offense when she enters the game. Junior post Meredith Scott (6’0) will give the Lady Cyclones depth inside. Coach Weidower says that she has been the most improved player during the offseason. Brooke Hunt rounds out this outstanding class of 2012. The rest of the 2011-2012 Lady Cyclone roster includes juniors Ann Reynolds, Rosalyn Peevy, and Xiomara Sanchez. The sophomores are Kenzie Weidower, Shelby Gray, Ashlyn Hill, Mallory Harpenau, Kristen Hodges, Brittney Harris, Ashtin Kendrick, Brooke Knight, Allie Green, and Taylor Bleakley. Coach Weidower is excited that he will be able to get these girls some great minutes during the Junior Varsity games. Coach Weidower knows that his team must be ready to play every night. They reeled off 12 straight wins to start last season and teams will be ready to get their revenge. They will be defending their 2010 Mt. St. Mary’s Heavenly Hoopfest and Morrilton Tournament championship titles. The 6A/7A Central Conference will once again be tough. North Little Rock and Cabot will both sport Division I players and Weidower expects to battle them for the title. This difficult conference will prepare the Lady Cyclones for the 6A State Tournament in March. Weidower wants to have the girls playing their best basketball when they get to the post-season. Fans need to come out and be a part of what could be one of the most successful seasons in Lady Cyclone history.

Little Johns Little Johns Have Big Plans

The Danville Little Johns are coming off an impressive 24-3 overall record and an undefeated conference championship from the 2010-2011 season. They return several key players from last year and this has Coach Dusty Wright, in his 6th season at the helm, optimistic about the upcoming campaign for the Little Johns. Danville will once again rely on their full court pressure defense to keep teams off-balance. Wright said, “Depth will be a huge strength for us again this year. We believe we have 8-10 guys who can contribute at a very high level.” This should allow the Little Johns to keep up the pressure without fearing foul trouble.

Garner, and sophomore forward Brett Wilkins.

Danville will once again be the conference favorite. They will battle Magazine and Two Rivers for the championship. One of the areas that the Little Johns must improve upon is finishing games strong. This has been a focus in practice and Wright hopes this will help Danville advance deep into the The Little Johns have an outstanding senior class. post season in 2012. Lady Little Johns Lady Little Johns Ready for a Magical Season

The Lady Little Johns are anticipating a great season. After a 22-10 campaign in 2010-2011, they return with a wealth of talent and experience. Beginning his fourth season as the head coach, Kevan Moore is eager to get the Lady Little Johns in front of their wonderful fans. After years of implementing his up-tempo coaching style, Moore is beginning to see the benefits. He said, “Our program is moving in a great direction.” Danville will be led by an outstanding senior class. It all starts with post Alexus Elmore (5’8”), who averaged a doubledouble as junior putting up 16 p.p.g. and pulling down 12 r.p,g. Guard Maranda Turner (5’1”) is an outstanding defender, averaging five steals per game last year. Guard Katelyn Derrick (5’3”) gives the Lady Little Johns another hard-nosed guard that can shoot the three. Moore knows that Elmore, Turner, and Derrick must have a great year in order for the Lady Little Johns to compete for a state title. Wings Katelyn Lane (5’5”) and Rachel Knight (5’7”) give this Lady Little John team the depth it takes to be successful during a long season. According to Moore, “A senior leader was missing last season, and if a leader steps up out of this group this year, the possibilities are endless.”

out the junior class. Moore is hopeful that sophomore center Tora Eggleton (5’10”) will give the Lady Little Johns an inside presence offensively and defensively. Sophomores Peyton Powers (5’2”), Gabby Gomez (5’5”), and Sydni Tolliver (5’7”) complete the 2011-2012 roster.

Moore will be looking for a trio of juniors to make this year one of the greatest in school history. Guard Hope Moore (5’4”) can do it all. She averaged 7 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals a game as a sophomore. Guard Emily Tramel (5’2”) and wing Mariah Dorrough (5’6”) could find themselves in the starting line-up. Panthers Panthers Reload as Favorite to Repeat

Clarksville’s third year head coach Tony Davis may have to change his name to Tony Dynasty. The Clarksville Panthers return nearly their entire roster full of firepower in 2011 to defend their 2010 state title that they won over current Razorback freshman Hunter Mickelson and Jonesboro Westside last year in Hot Springs. The Panthers were able to avenge a quarterfinal loss from 2009 against that same Jonesboro Westside club. Do everything junior Dederick Lee still has two more years to score in Davis’ scheme and he broke the 1000 point plateau last season at the mid way point! Plus the recruiting pressure is off of Dederick as he has already verbally committed to join Hunter Mickelson and run up and down in Mike Anderson’s Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball when he finally does graduate. Dederick has great quickness off the dribble and can drain the three if defenders sag off of him to stop the drive. His range is literally NBA and beyond, plus he is a physical, tenacious on the ball defender who plays with solid technique and stays out of foul trouble. As if Dederick Lee alone on a AAAA high school basketball team is not enough, toss in twin brothers Kendrick and Frederick Lee. They are Arkansas’ version of Spud Webb and Mugsy Bogues. Kendrick moved up as a ninth grader to be arguably the best

1703 Clark Road, sixth man in AAAA in the state Clarksville last year and then Frederick was Gym - 479-754-3712 added to the post season roster Class: 4A after competing in junior high. District: 4 Frederick contributed instantly. He is a brilliant passer and has Colors:Red & White a great intermediate jumper as Mascot: Panther well. I’ve watched him make every meaningful shot down the stretch of many AAU summer games from 15-17 feet in tight games without missing a beat. Kendrick has streaky range that rivals his older brother Dederick and is as tough a one-on-one defender as there is. The Lee Brothers have won multiple AAU summer championships and routinely play with and against the best of the best in summer competition. Chemistry has been a big part of the Panthers success over the last couple of years and the class of 2012 is a big part of that. Trey Norris and Preston South have been a huge part of the Panthers success as well over the last two years and they hope to go out with a bang this season. South has a good basketball lineage with his father, Walter, being a former Panther All State standout in the mid eighties. At 6’3” South is forced to guard some larger players on the block but uses his quickness and aggressiveness to provide good defensive help on the interior. Preston also runs the floor

www.arsports.net

very well which is important as the Lee brothers like to get up and down the floor after creating turnovers. Trey Norris has been a big time performer for the Panthers the last two seasons and might start for almost any other team in 4, 5 or 6 A. He averaged nearly a double –double over the last two years and is an excellent all around athlete. Norris has been depended upon to help with the scoring slack the last two years if Dederick Lee got into foul trouble. The consistency of Trey Norris down the stretch run to the championship was integral to the Panthers success. Zach Stumbaugh does all the little things for the Panthers. Diving for loose basketballs, taking charges, guarding an opponent with more size and strength hitting a big shot when everyone else seems as cold as ice_are all things Zac has done to help his team win. Role player is an insult to Stumbaugh as he is much more important to this team. He’s back again to provide great senior leadership with South and Norris. But wait there’s more! Jerren Thompson comes from a longtime Clarksville family of great athletes. Uncles Henry and Johnny were hoop standouts in the eighties and uncle Odell was a football star in the nineties. Thompson is long (6’3”) and is not finished growing yet and moved up with Frederick Lee to help swat 5 blocked shots and sink a falling down “and one” shot against Farmington that was one of the highlights of the 2010 Championship run. Thompson has as much potential as anyone in the state and he’s yet another sophomore. Dale Peterson and Oscar Walker will again return to help add size and depth to the post positions. Each one of them played very well in early season action as sophomores last season. Both players are mobile and have some length and play at full tilt when they’re on the floor. Add all of the above to 6’4” point guard Devin Sims, a transfer from St. Louis, considered one of the cities’ top point guards and the Panthers have a roster that could run every single opponent out of the gym. Finally, a junior high group moves up to become sophomores that did not lose a game last season in the regular season or the district tournament. Tony Dynasty has a nice “ring” to it to the folks in Clarksville. LISTEN TO THE GAME ON

clarksville Lady Panthers New Look For Lady Panthers

The Clarksville Lady Panthers will look like a different team this year. They have no returning starters but that doesn’t concern Head Coach Randy Talley. Talley begins his 10th season leading the Lady Panther program. One of the strengths of this team will be that they have the ability to play multiple styles. Talley said, “We can go small and play an up-tempo game or go to a big line-up and play a totally different style when needed.” The Lady Panthers are looking to improve off of last year’s first round regional tournament five-point defeat at the hands of eventual state champion Shilo Christian. This will be difficult after losing several all-conference players that included all-state player Hannah Banning. This year’s team will be bigger and more athletic than past teams at Clarksville. The lone senior on the team will be guard Kalee Fowler. Talley expects her to take over the leadership role. The Lady Panther junior class is talented. Talley said, “This junior group played a lot together coming up through the program and are used to having success.” They are led by guard Ciara Graham. She pumped in 15 points a game as a sophomore before her injury. Talley said, “A huge key for us is for Ciara to have a healthy, injury free season. It has been a long time since she has been completely healthy, tearing her ACL the last two years. If she stays healthy she has the talent and ability to be one of the best

Lady Devil Dogs McNabb Takes Over in Morrilton

The Morrilton Lady Devil Dogs are under new leadership this year. Longtime head coach, Shelly Davis has departed and Carin McNabb takes over the program. Coach McNabb brings experience as a college and high school head coach. She joins that Lady Devil Dogs and is excited about her new home. McNabb will take over a program that has had tremendous success over the past 10 years, winning State Titles in 2003 and 2006. After a disappointing season in 2010-2011, the Lady Devil Dogs are looking to getting back to their winning ways. McNabb is up to the challenge of making this program a state contender once again. She knows that building a program takes hard work and time. Playing for the legendary coach Joe Foley at Arkansas Tech University has prepared her for those very things. The Lady Devil Dogs return a number of players from last year. Several sophomores saw significant playing time and McNabb is counting on that experience to be a strength for her team. Morrilton has three seniors that McNabb will look to for leadership this year. Forwards Terriona Brockman (5’10”) and Emali Sommers (5’10”) provide good size for the Lady Devil Dogs. Post Emily Jones (5’10”) gives the Lady Devil dogs a presence in the paint. McNabb will need a strong junior class to produce this season in order for the Lady Devil Dogs to make a run for a state tournament appearance. Post KT Davis (6’2”) has the ability to dominate inside on both the offensive and defensive ends. McNabb knows that she will be a key to the Lady Devil Dog attack. She said, “The girls have been working hard during the summer and hopefully we will see the results this season.” Offensively fans can expect to see more motion offense. After four years as the assistant coach at Dardanelle, Russell Sturdivant is excited to be heading up the tradition rich Sand Lizard program. Sturdivant feels that the transition from assistant to head coach has been smooth due to the fact that he has been working with his current senior class since they were in the seventh grade. Sophomore Hunter Howell will give the Pirates the depth inside they will need to compete in a difficult conference. Rounding out the 2011-2012 Pirate roster will be senior Joe Arivett, junior Austin Koster, and sophomores Jacob Ennis, Tanner Howell, Kendall Spence, Tanner Watson, Tristan Watson, and Brendan Wiley. Clarksville and Pottsville should be at the top of the conference standings. Chenowith expects his team to be competitive every game and feels that those high expectations could give his team the confidence needed to compete with the elite teams in the conference.

DOVER Lady Pirates

Lady Pirates Must Believe Every team wants to improve from one year to the next and the Dover Lady Pirates are no different. With two talented starters returning, the Lady Pirates should be able to exceed last season’s 16-10 overall and 8-4 conference records and a first round regional appearance. The conference championship is in their sights. Coach Irvin Fairfield considers his squad as one of the top four teams in the league along with Pottsville, Clarksville, and Dardanelle. “This is a very competitive conference from top to bottom,” said Fairfield, in his fourth year at Dover and his 30th overall. “On any given night any one team could beat any other.” The Lady Pirates lost three senior starters from a season ago, including guard Jordan Ivey, and posts Kali Scott and Kinsey Tarkington. However, senior leadership from returning starters Whitney Worsham and Lena Little should help the Lady Pirates handle the competition. Worsham, a guard, averaged 10 points, 3 steals, and 5 rebounds per game last year. Little, a forward, averaged 6 points, 3 steals and 6 rebounds per contest a year ago.

We just need to believe in ourselves,” Worsham said. “My goal this year is to be a leader on and off the court. For all the girls that look up to me I want to set the best example that I can for them. When everyone is down, I want to lift them up. I want to be someone they can count on.”

Lady Warriors Lady Warriors Counting on Experience After a slow start a year ago, Lamar picked it up in December. They won 16 out of 19 games to finish up 19-8 and Coach Schluterman is hopeful that momentum will carry over to this season. The Lady Warriors were defeated by State Semi-finalist West Fork in the first round of regionals. The Lady Warriors must find a way to replace the leadership and toughness of Jessica Milloway. She has moved on to play for former Lady Warrior Head Coach Carl Ramsey at the University of the Ozarks. Schluterman and the Lady Warriors want to get this program back to the state tournament. Schluterman said, “We have to learn how to use that experience and success from last year to make us a tougher, better basketball team this year.” Lamar has 4 state titles and would love to make it five. The Lady Warriors return three All-District players. Seniors Libby Nepivoda (5’7”), Deidra Holben (5’7”), and Bethany Mitchell (5’6”) should give them a great start on finding that leader. They all averaged 10 points a game last year and Schluterman is expecting them to guide the 2011-2012 Lady Warriors. Lamar

has six other seniors that have been together since the 7th grade. Stephanie Parda (5’4”), Jessica Casey (5’7”), Allie Smith (5’8”), Meghan Noyes (5’5”), Ali McCarley (5’7”), and Amber Jackson (5’8”) will give the Lady Warriors excellent depth.

Lamar has some talented underclassmen as well. Juniors Emilie Nepivoda (5’6”), Jessica DeYoung (5’6”), Ashley Watson (5’3”), and Tiffany Ward (5’7”) have been working hard during the off-season. Schluterman has a group of sophomores that had a successful junior high team last year. Madison Grover (5’9”), Lindy Hignite (5’8”), Lauren Clark (5’8”), Cierra Boswell (5’6”), and Brittany Watts (5’5”) could give the Lady Warriors good minutes off the bench and will push the other players in practice. When facing conference foes such as Charleston and Paris, the Lady Warriors will need to use their experience and depth to make them competitive.

Red Devils Atkins Turns to Tanner

Longtime Red Devil head coach Craig Pinion has moved to the Lady Red Devil program. Taking over the boys will be Keith Tanner, who is excited about the talented team he has inherited. The Red Devils return three starters from last year. Leading the way will be senior guard Trey Bennett (5’10”) and forward Heath Keene (6’0”). Bennett was selected to the AllState team as a sophomore. He led the team in scoring as a junior, pumping in 20 points per game. Keene averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds and gives the Red Devils a tough inside game. Tanner knows that these two must take over the leadership role this year. Red Devil junior forward Konner Johnston (6’0”) had a great sophomore season and has been working hard during the off-season improving his skills.

The remaining Red Devil upperclassmen looking to get into that top seven or eight will be senior guard Peyton Hernendez (5’10”), junior guard Josh Hogrefe (5’5”), and junior guard Kaleb Tunnel (5’9”). The sophomore class consists of Landry Harris (6’1”), Blake Sweeden (5’8”), Joey Vaughn (6’1”), Kyle Chronister (5’8”), Chance Knotts (5’8”), and Brandon Burns (5’8”). Coach Tanner likes this group of sophomores and feels they have all improved during the off-season. Tanner will need the Red Devils to toughen up on defense. “I know

if the boys play hard and are willing to strive for excellence on the defensive side then we can compete and play with anyone,” he said. Patience will be a key for the Red Devil offense. Tanner wants to attack the opponent’s defensive weaknesses. They will look for mismatches as several Red Devils can play inside or outside. Tanner said, “The boys know what it takes for us to be successful. They just need to prove to themselves that they are capable of doing the little things that it takes to be successful.” With this said the Red Devils should be able to gain the confidence and composure to win the close games in the 2011-2012 campaign.

Although they will be young, second year head coach Gary Simmons says that teams better look out for the Lady Wildcats when the postseason rolls around. Hector lost several key players from a year ago and that could get them off to a slow start. Simmons feels that his young team has worked extremely hard preparing for the 2011-2012 season and is certain that this will pay off for Lady Wildcats. Hector is counting on speed and quickness to give opponents trouble. Simmons says they are unselfish and play very well together. Look for super sophomore guard Kasey Rook, who averaged 18 points per game in junior high, to provide most of the scoring for the team. Junior point guard

Brittany Dixon should set the tempo both on offense and defense. Senior forwards Morgan Pack and April Rudder, along with senior guard Sad’e Ester, should give the Lady Wildcats solid leadership. Karena Rook, sophomore guard and twin sister to Kasey, could find herself in the starting line-up before the season’s end. Heather Blalack, Cheyenne Brown, Jade Collins, Whitney Garrison, Brittany McDonald, and Lauren Tereza complete the Lady Wildcat roster. Freshmen guards Katie Winberry and Kayla Birgenske round out the Eastside Lady Whirlwind starting five. The remaining Eastside roster consists of Maria Marasco, Brookelynn Long, Sarah Cole, Victoria

Teague, Madison McKinley, Sidney Brandon, Katie Hefley, Kailey Bradley, and Shelbi Thompson. Coach Chiolino’s team will battle for the River Valley Conference crown with Greenbrier, Morrilton, Beebe and the RJHS Westside. According to Chiolino, one of the greatest strengths of the Lady Whirlwinds will be their depth.

Whirlwinds

Westside Whirlwinds Seek Conference Championship The 2011-2012 Westside Whirlwinds have all the ingredients to be one of the most successful junior high teams in Russellville in several years. They have a great inside and outside game on the offensive and defensive end. The Whirlwinds have excellent team speed at the guard and forward positions. This group has been very successful in 7th and 8th grade and Coach Jeff Crumpton knows the expectations are high. He said, “We will look to build on the success that these young men have had coming up through the system.” The Westside Whirlwinds had a productive summer competing against several great teams across the state. Crumpton is hopeful that experience will put them in the position to win the conference title. In order for this to happen, the Whirlwinds will need to play consistent defense. Crumpton added, “We want to improve on our defense and take pride in playing great defense.” The Westside Whirlwinds have several talented freshmen. Andy Campbell started several games as an

Scott can score from anywhere Conference: River Valley but his ability to Colors: Black & Red find the open man for easy baskets Mascot: Whirlwind may be the key for the Whirlwinds making a conference title run. Tony Jones has an excellent touch from the three as well as the ability to attack the basket. CoCheese Temple-Laws is a gifted athlete that can score and make life difficult on the other team with his defensive pressure. Tyler Allen gives the Whirlwinds great size and has a smooth touch from 15 feet. Mark Moyer brings yet another threat on the perimeter for the Whirlwinds. Grant Gebhardt and Kervin Flores will give the Whirlwinds a solid 8-man rotation. Rounding out the freshmen class are Taylor Allen, Grant Gebhardt, Alan Daiber, Mack Marchant, Tripp Croom, Kervin Flores, and Sam Dunbar.

Lady Whirlwinds Westside Lady Winds Have Excellent Team Chemistry The Russellville Westside Lady Whirlwinds come into this season with confidence after a productive summer and pre-season. Head Coach Jason Martin enters his 7th season at RJHS. He said, “I am excited about coaching this group of girls. They work extremely hard and are a very coachable group.” This should allow Martin the opportunity to make this team competitive each night. Martin points out that the strength of this group is their ability to play team basketball. Martin welcomes Veronica Black as his assistant coach. Black played and assisted at the college level in her home state of Georgia. Martin expects Black to be a huge asset to the Westside Lady Whirlwinds.

Simpson. Martin expects these young ladies to be the main scoring threats in the starting line-up. The remaining freshmen are Marilyn Golden, Cicily Ashcraft, Madeline Bray, Baylee Crozier, Bailey Reynolds, Brittany George, Samantha Brown, and Brooke Tarbox. Martin will look for players in this group to step up and fight for those top seven or eight positions.

The Lady Whirlwinds do not have any star players, just a well-balanced mixture of size and athleticism. In order for the Westside Lady Whirlwinds to be successful, they will need to improve their rebounding and free throws. Wonderboys

Wonder Boys RELOADING This Season

The Wonder Boy basketball program has become an NCAA Division II national power house over the past 5 years. The defending Gulf South Conference Western Division Champions look to find similar success in their newly formed Great American Conference. The Wonder Boys lost in the GSC championship game last year to Harding. They did, however, receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II tournament and lost in the 2nd round in a heart-breaker in overtime to Alabama-Huntsville. These two loses should provide plenty of motivation for the 2011-2012 Wonder Boys. Doug Karleskint begins his 3rd season at the helm as the Wonder Boys head coach. He has had tremendous success going 55-8 during his first two campaigns.

Pg. 60 • River Valley HOOPS 2011

Coach Karleskint has lost 4 starters from last season’s outstanding team. “Laithe Massey, a GAC All-Conference point guard for the last two years, will be tough to replace”, says Coach Karleskint. He is looking for returning starter Johnie Davis (16 ppg) to step up and take over the leadership role. Matt Haney will be counted on to assist Davis as a leader on and off the floor. According to Coach Karleskint, Haney is the type of player that doesn’t show up in the stats but is counted on each and every night to do those little things that help teams win championships. This 2011-2012 Wonder Boys could have one the most athletic teams in school history. Coach Karleskint has built this team around speed. One of the greatest challenges that the Wonder Boys will face this year is coming together as a team in a short amount of time. Fans can expect to see a high octane offense as the

Wonder Boys look to attack at all times. They will attempt to create offense off of their extreme man-to-man pressure defense. Karleskint says, “I am extremely excited to coach this group.” He feels that this team has strong character and fans will grow to love them. Karleskint knows that for the 2011-2012 Wonder Boys to make a run at a national title that they must become a more

Along with Davis and Haney, Karleskint expects senior Mykel Cleveland to help lead this team. Russellville natives, juniors Jared Williamson and Jeremy Hourd, will see significant minutes this season and will be counted on to step up their game. Junior Will Paul rounds out the Wonder Boys top 6 upper classmen. The Wonder Boys will start the season playing a difficult non-

Karleskint hopes that this will prepare his team for a grueling GAC slate starting in January. He feels that the University of Monticello will be near the top of the conference. Harding Head Coach: Doug Karleskint (2nd season) and Southwest Oklahoma will be competing with the Wonder Boys for the GAS conference title as well. Ouachita Baptist University, Southeastern Oklahoma, Southern Arkansas University, and East Central Univeristy all have strong programs. Golden Suns

Golden Suns Crave National Title

After two consecutive NCAA Division II Elite 8 appearances the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns are primed and ready to make a run at the national title. The Golden Suns are coming off a 30-3 season from last year. Coach Dave Wilbers begins his fifth season at Arkansas Tech. Wilbers has an impressive 106-21 record as the Golden Suns head coach. He has led ATU to back-to-back NCAA Division II South Regional Championships and Gulf South Conference titles. The 2011-2012 Golden Suns return two starters from last season. Senior forward Natalie Santos (6’2”) averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds a game as a junior. If the Golden Suns expect to reach all of their goals then Santos must play big every night. Santos has excellent touch around the basket as well as a knack for finding open three point shooters. Junior forward Jessica Weatherford (6’0”) averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds a year ago. Weatherford has become

Pg. 64 • River Valley HOOPS 2011

a strong scorer both inside and outside. Senior forwards Katie Horsman (6’0”), Samantha Ludwig (6’1”), and Lindsey Root (6’2”) give the Golden Suns depth at the forward position. In order for the Golden Suns to reach their ultimate goal they will have to find a way to replace three tremendous guards. Laura Beth Anderson, Jenny Vining, and Shaquilah Davis finished up outstanding careers and will be missed greatly. Coach Wilbers is confident that the Golden Suns have guards capable of filling this void. Junior guard Sarah Martin (5’11”) along with sophomore guards Shanae Govan (5’3”), Lindsey Burgener (5’8”), and Jackie Dennis (5’6”) will be counted on by Wilbers to fill some big shoes. Wilbers has several newcomers for the 2011-2012 season. Wilbers recruited three transfer guards, junior Lily Abreu (Kilgore JC), junior Roselis Silva (Cisco JC), and sophomore Breana Williams (University of Houston). They will give the Golden Suns valuable game experience.

Coach Wilbers, along with assistant Julio Pacheco, welcome a strong freshman class as well. Guard Cara Neighbors (Lonoke, AR), guard Haley Stinnett (Cotter, AR), and guard/ forward Jamie Long (Russellville, AR) all had great high school careers and have been working hard adjusting to the college game. Completing the 2011-2012 roster will be red-shirt freshmen Whitney Donahue and Jae Tucker. Arkansas Tech opens the season at Tucker Coliseum on November 12th with Central Baptist College. They will travel to Pensacola, FL in late December for the West Florida Classic. The Golden Suns will begin their first season in the newly formed Great American Conference in January

The rest of the GAC consists of Southwestern Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma, East Central Oklahoma, Henderson State, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, and Southern Arkansas. The Golden Suns have had record crowds the past few years and fans can expect to see some exciting basketball at Tucker Coliseum once again this year.
