A MESSAGE FROM
Lisa A. Lalama & Anna Quisel
Dear WMS Families and Friends, The 2013-14 school year will be remembered as a time for celebration — Wilmington Montessori School has been educating children for 50 years! This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without you. Throughout the year, we reminisced about our rich history and also looked to the future and all the possibilities ahead of us. The year began with our founding Head of School Marie M. Dugan completing her tenure as the Interim Head and continuing to co-chair the Marie M. Dugan Fund for the Future Comprehensive Campaign. Her efforts have allowed us to move solidly into the future, eager to begin our next 50 years. We marked our 50th anniversary with a gala at which old friends gathered and celebrated the tradition of Montessori excellence so prevalent at WMS. We enjoyed stories from the past and shared plans for the future. It was so nice to see so many people who have had the pleasure of being a part of the WMS community. Thank you for joining us. Service learning continues to be an integral part of WMS as we prepare our students to be responsible and compassionate global citizens. During the 2013-14 school year, the sixth-grade students supported Vision For and From Children as a part of their experience at the Global Citizenship Action Project. They learned about this organization founded by a young woman who is working to bring surgery and vision services to children who desperately need them. We continued to support the Food Bank of Delaware and collected 1,853 pounds of food as part of the DelawareCAN competition. The 9-12 students created sculptures from the cans and boxes and were recognized with awards for “Best in Show” and for collecting the most food. Our 25-acre campus continues to be a highlight of the school. This year we had the honor of becoming a certified Monarch Way Station. The 3-6 classes
planted a garden designed to provide monarch butterflies with a safe place to stop, rest, lay eggs and get nourishment as they migrate. Our 9-12 students created a year-round garden outside of their classrooms, sharing their bounty with the Food Bank. Our stage in the woods was refurbished by an alumnus as his Eagle Scout project. All of these projects have allowed us to enjoy our time outdoors. As a result of the hard work of our education team this year, we were reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), demonstrating the quality of our early childhood programs. We also remain the only school in Delaware to be jointly accredited by NAEYC, the American Montessori Society (AMS), and the Middle States Association (MSA) of Colleges and Schools, along with maintaining a five-star designation from Delaware Stars for Early Success. As we move into our next 50 years, we look forward to implementing our 2013-16 Strategic Plan. Because of your support during the 2014-15 school year, we were able to begin the implementation of our technology initiative, continue to enhance and utilize our outdoor spaces, and prepare for future initiatives including our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) program and arts integration. We cannot thank you enough for being part of our first 50 years; please join us as we head into the next 50. Sincerely, Lisa A. Lalama Head of School

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS
2013-14
D
uring the 2013-14 fiscal year, Wilmington Montessori School continued to build upon the financial turnaround that began in the previous year. Enrollment remained stable and the Board and administration worked diligently to control operating expenses to match the school’s revenues. As an investment in WMS’s future, $300,000 was spent on Strategic Plan initiatives. Fundraising continued to be strong for WMS during its 50th year. We raised more than $1 million as our donors continued to confirm their confidence in WMS and their support for independent Montessori education in Delaware.
