Underfloor Heating Overview

Energy reaches into every corner of the room with underfloor heating. There are no cold spots, no hot heads and no cold feet ! With underfloor heating the air temperature is hottest at floor level, where it is needed and reduces as it rises to the ceiling. Conventional radiator systems have the opposite effect where air temperature is coolest at floor level and hottest at ceiling level resulting in high heat loss through the ceiling which means higher energy usage and fuel bills. Underfloor heating can also achieve comfort levels of heating with air temperatures that are around 2째C lower than other systems.

8 | WMS Underfloor Heating

These factors mean that when designing an underfloor heating system, less allowance is required for building height which means lower energy requirements for buildings with high ceilings such as warehouses, theatres, churches, schools, barn conversions and leisure centres.

overview OVERVIEW

Complete flexibility With multiple control options, your comfort is achievable at the press of a button. Underfloor heating is invisible and being under the surface gives you a totally flexible layout with no radiators to limit interior designs and furniture arrangements. Underfloor heating can also add value to property through its silent operation and lower running costs.

Energy efficient Underfloor heating is the most energy efficient way of transferring heat into any room since it works almost entirely by radiation, from the floor surface onto other surfaces in the room and from there heating the airspace. This is a more natural form of heating and requires lower flow temperatures due to its increased surface area.

Eco-friendly Underfloor heating is an integral part of the green revolution in contemporary heating and cooling solutions. It requires much lower water temperatures than conventional heating systems, it can be connected to a range of eco-friendly heat generators like solar panels and geo-thermal heat pumps making it the natural partner for many heating and cooling solutions in the renewables sector.

Healthier environment Radiant energy is emitted by the floor making it the warmest part of the room with the air cooling as it rises, with the coolest air at the ceiling and the warmest air at the floor level, where we want it to be. This radiation method creates fewer draughts and dust movements and explains why underfloor heating is considered to be the most comfortable and healthiest form of heating. For those who have it, few ever want to return to conventional systems.

The Complete Solution

Underfloor heating systems provide ideal comfort levels for the home, office, retail environment, leisure or industrial complex. They are highly efficient, proven, durable and environmentally friendly.

Manifold The Ambiente stainless steel manifold is a piece of engineering excellence. Acting as the heart of the system, this sophisticated piece of equipment distributes warm water throughout the underfloor heating system. > more information on page 22

Underfloor heating also requires less energy than conventional heating systems, they are completely silent in operation, emit zero emissions and do not rely on blowers or hot surfaces to distribute heat throughout your building. During the summer months our systems can be switched to provide underfloor cooling by simply running cool water through the system. This absorbs heat from the surrounding air and creates a pleasantly cool environment. Our aim is simple. We want to enrich your way of life by offering you a heating system that is more comfortable, reliable, cleaner and much more efficient for the future.

Driveway Heating and Snow Melting Systems Fully automated, radiant heat snow melting systems can be installed in small customised driveways, large commercial parking structures, ramps, loading bays, walkways and more.

How Underfloor Heating and Cooling Works Underfloor heating works by circulating warm water through a series of continuous loops that are fitted underneath your floor creating a large radiant surface that heats your room from the floor upwards. This radiant form of heating is much more comfortable than the convected heat provided by radiators which draws cold air across the floor, heating it and then convecting it upwards towards the ceiling. Underfloor cooling works in very much the same way as underfloor heating except the energy transfer is reversed. Where underfloor heating radiates thermal energy from the floor surface into the air space, underfloor cooling relies on warm air passing over the cooler floor surface which absorbs radiant energy from the air and reduces the air temperature in the room. This process of passing chilled water through the floor keeps the floor area cool which continually absorbs warm air from the room.

WMS Underfloor Heating | 17

What are the Main Components of an Underfloor Heating System? WMS Underfloor Heating can design, supply and install the complete system for you. Our manifolds are designed for connection to any heat source from a conventional boiler to ground source heat pumps or solar panels.

1

> Heat Source

The heat source can be any type of water heater, from a conventional boiler powered by gas or electricity or any of the renewable energy sources, including ground source heat pumps and solar panels. Since underfloor heating heats the whole floor area, the water temperatures required are much lower than that of radiators.

Supplied by others 18 | WMS Underfloor Heating

2 > Design

The underfloor heating design is unmistakably the most important part of any underfloor heating system. Our dedicated design team produces accurate and comprehensive drawings for every system that we install, maximising performance for all our systems, guaranteeing that we will supply the most cost effective and efficient solution for your project.

3

> Manifold

The manifold distributes water from the heating source to the relevant zone. Manifolds will typically have a mixer valve to allow them to mix hot flow water with the cooler return to achieve the reduced temperatures required by underfloor heating.

6

The pipe is at the heart of every underfloor heating system and at WMS we make sure that we only use the very best. Our pipe is a five layered polyethylene tube that uses the latest PE-RT technology.

There are many variations of system type, consisting of pipe work that is set within the floor, typically either a screed or timber floor but fixing methods change according to requirements. Our pipes can heat floor areas at low water temperatures and are designed to be effective with almost any floor finish including ceramic tiles, linoleum, wood and carpets.

Effective controls are an essential part of any heating system especially since around 90% of your underfloor heating system is actually underfloor. The control system provides a user interface with your heating system and can be as simple or as complex as your requirements. Underfloor heating temperatures are measured by room thermostats that are situated throughout the building with floor probe options available for sensitive floors.

It is manufactured in Europe to our own specification and contains an integral EVOH oxygen barrier layer which prevents oxygenation of water inside the system. This is a very important feature because air in the system can cause air locks or corrosion.

Design Capability Our dedicated CAD design team produces accurate and comprehensive drawings for every system that we install, maximising performance for all our systems and guaranteeing that we will supply the most cost effective and efficient solution for your project.

Having our own design team means that we can be much more flexible during the design stage and can quickly accommodate any alterations to the layout and other requirements as they are specified by the architect, builder or client. We can prioritise these changes in our system and minimise any delays. These drawings are also supplied to our clients for their own records. We also keep all our drawings in our electronic database for future reference and if clients require this information we can readily supply it.

20 | WMS Underfloor Heating

We also supply comprehensive wiring diagrams showing how the system should be wired, by your on-site electrician. Each diagram provides clear, concise and comprehensive electrical layout details for the system. Our design team benefits from our unique, approved design system that includes heat loss and output calculations. We provide detailed CAD drawing layouts showing exact positioning of all UFH pipework, controllers, manifolds and bathroom/kitchen layouts to thoroughly assist the install process and ensure all requirements are met.

Manifold: Confidence at the Heart of the System Manifolds are the heart of any underfloor heating system as they control the flow and distribution of water from the heat source (boiler, heat pump etc.) to the individual underfloor pipe circuits. Manifold mixing valves can also be attached to the manifold to regulate the water flow temperature. A pressure gauge ensures that the system is properly pressurised.

22 | WMS Underfloor Heating

MANIFOLDS WMS Underfloor Heating manifolds are manufactured in Europe and represent another quality addition to our range of components. Made out of stainless steel and tested to rigorous standards, they are available in various sizes from just two ports for a small system, up to 12 port versions for areas up to 200M2 . In order to ensure total durability and reliability, our systems are tested to 4 bar for operation within systems that typically operate on less than 3 bar pressure. Following installation, our commissioning engineers provide a comprehensive balancing and commissioning service to ensure the system is working perfectly before handover. At handover we also provide a full list of documentation including a set of ‘as installed’ drawings, detailing exactly where our pipes have been laid and how they are configured in your system. We also provide a comprehensive operating and maintenance (O&M) handbook which gives details of all manufacturing and installation warranties. See the ‘site assist’ section in this brochure for details of our unique aftercare and planned maintenance service contracts that are available for our systems.

WMS Underfloor Heating | 23

PE-RT Pipe: The Hidden Quality WMS Underfloor Heating pipe is a five layered polyethylene tube using PE-RT technology that is manufactured to our own specification and composed of five bonded layers. It contains an integral EVOH oxygen barrier layer to prevent oxygenation of water inside the system. PE-RT pipe PE-RT stands for ‘polyethylene at raised temperature resistance’. Polyethylene has excellent properties at high pressures and temperatures as well as being very flexible and easy to use. It is non-corrosive and has very good resistance to frost. It is also creep-resistant and has a high impact strength, which means that if the pipe is distorted it will return to its original shape within a short period of time. The outer layer protects the oxygen barrier from mechanical damage, moisture and other damaging materials. Polymer adhesive A functionalised polythene that acts as an adhesive layer between the polyethylene and the oxygen barrier. EVOH oxygen barrier Made of ethanol vinyl alcohol that prevents oxygen diffusion at up to 80°C.

24 | WMS Underfloor Heating

Oxygen diffusion is a very important factor within underfloor heating. The nature of under floor heating to cover the whole floor area with pipe at relevant spacings creates a huge surface area of plastic, making it vulnerable to its surroundings. It is then essential that the pipe has a very low level of oxygen permeability so that oxygen cannot permeate into the pipe work and cause unnecessary damage and costs. A standard plastic pipe would not meet this level of oxygen permeability. The pipe is installed with no joints within the floor and even when a pipe does need to be joined after the installation, a simple procedure of exposing and reconnecting the two ends is all that is required. Ambiente® pipe is supplied with a 50 year product guarantee. However, assuming the pipe is not disturbed, it is expected to out live the life of the building itself in the vast majority of cases.

Control Systems Controls are an essential part of any heating system as they create your environment in the most efficient and cost effective way possible. This means ensuring that your system only operates when required and for the minimum period of time. There are various methods of doing this but all are managed by your control system with various levels of integration between the heating zone, heat source and outside temperature. The control system must be accurate and sophisticated as well as easy to use! Room temperature control for underfloor heating is measured by ambient room temperature controllers that are located in each zone. These are linked to the local manifold wiring centre where commands are sent to various relays and other outputs that require a signal.

> Maximum output > Quick installation > Suit irregularly shaped rooms > Versatile pipe layout plan Edge and floor insulation is installed over the subfloor on to which cliprails are then fixed to by both the adhesive backing strip and barbed staples (where WMS is not supplying the insulation, checks should be made to ensure that the insulation is compatible with the cliprail system). Once the cliprails are secured in position, the underfloor heating pipework is laid in continuous loops and clipped down in accordance with the underfloor heating design drawings. Once complete, the system is pressure tested and witnessed to finalise the installation. We recommend that the screeding process is scheduled to follow shortly after installation to avoid leaving the system vulnerable to damage. WMS should be notified if a liquid screed is being used, as the insulation must be sealed to provide a watertight base. Where controls are required from WMS, these will be supplied as ‘second fix’ items for others to fit.

SYSTEMS

> Panels manufactured to suit layout plan > Rapid installation > Wide range of applications

AmbiFloat 10 system requires a flat and level sub floor for the insulation to fully support the floor finish on top. The insulation is pre-grooved to take the underfloor heating pipework and over laid with foil to assist the distribution of heat. The polystyrene insulation panels are manufactured per project to suit the underfloor heating design drawings. The system is then overlaid with a fully floating floor deck onto which your floor finish is applied. In the case of wooden floors, this can be laid directly on to the insulation to minimise height buildup and maximise the heating output. AmbiFloat 20 system has a wide range of applications from sprung sports floors, acoustic floors through to overbattened floors. AmbiFloat 30 system is designed to fit between timber joists supported by battens. This provides a neat solution incorporating the aluminium profile and insulation into one product. The timber subfloor should be installed in the normal way over the joists/battens onto to which your finishes are applied. Engineered timber floors can be fixed directly to the joists/battens.

SYSTEMS

> Maximum heat transfer > Even heat diffusion – highly conductive > No impact on floor buildup > Quick response time The systems consists of aluminium diffuser plates being fixed directly on to the battens/ joists. The plates contain grooved channels into which the underfloor heating pipework is installed in continuous lengths and piped back to the underfloor heating manifold. Before the underfloor heating system is installed, insulation should be laid between the battens/joists and should be laid as close as possible to the underside of the pipework to maximise heating output. The system is then pressure tested upon completion to 4 bar, witnessed by a site agent and signed off. The system should be left under pressure whilst the timber flooring is being laid to highlight any potential damage to the pipework during this process. Controls and pumps (if required) are supplied as loose items for others to install. An ‘as Installed’ drawing will be issued after the installation for the client’s records.

The AmbiStructural system can be used in a wide variety of applications where a load bearing structural floor is required. Such systems can be commonly found in car show rooms and airport hangers where point loadings can be extremely high. High density flooring insulation panels of the required specification are laid over the complete floor area which is overlaid with an A142 reinforcing mesh on to which the underfloor heating pipework is clipped. The specialist 17mm underfloor heating pipework is secured to the mesh in accordance with the underfloor heating designs with no joins in the pipework under the floor. Each loop circuits back to the underfloor heating manifold, complete with flow regulating valves, ball valves, pumps, mixing valves, drain/fill points, auto air vent and pressure gauge. The system must be filled and pressure tested upon completion and left under pressure whilst the concrete is laid. If controls are required from WMS, these will be supplied as ‘second fix’ items for others to fit.

A U-shaped bracket is mounted on to the pedestals on to which insulation profiles are installed. The 35mm x 100mm insulation panels are made of high density insulation and foiled to optimise the energy transfer. This contains a grooved channel into which the underfloor heating pipework is installed with no joints within the floor and piped back to the underfloor heating manifold as detailed on the right. The concept is simple but does require liaison with the access flooring specialist during the design and installation. This system lends itself towards most of the common raised access flooring manufacturers and whilst providing a heating or cooling source, will still maintain full access to services within the floor void.

SYSTEMS

> Suitable for both new and refurbishment applications > Wooden floors can be laid directly over insulation layer > Fits over existing floors

As part of our philosophy of continuous improvement we have developed a range of systems to suit low floor buildups where traditional systems cannot be used. This range is most often used in refurbishment projects where door and ceiling heights are fixed. AmbiLowboard Can be used in existing and new build applications. It utilises the same concept as our AmbiFloat systems but has been scaled down using higher density materials to have minimal impact on the floor buildup. AmbiScreedboard Consists of pre-routered screed boards which offers the perfect solution for tiled floors. The screed boards’ excellent conductivity properties make a highly effective and responsive heating system. Tiles can be laid directly on top of the screed board raising the overall floor buildup by only 18mm. AmbiChipboard Another development of the low floor buildup range that provides a structural floor solution over suspended timber floors, ideally for engineered joists that cant be notched or where full height steels restrict the use of the AmbiPlate system.

Fabrik, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton

The ‘Fabrik’ Coldharbour Lane development is the UK’s first ModernaHus development. ModernaHus is a pre-fabricated house building system that was originally developed by Skanska for the Scandinavian housing market which they have adapted for the UK. The main features of this project are a well-insulated building envelope combined with an underfloor heating system and a central biomass boiler which feeds a site-wide district heating scheme to provide a truly energy efficient and sustainable housing solution.

CASE STUDIES SYSTEM AmbiTak CLIENT Notting Hill Housing trust ARCHITECTS Powell Dobson, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris CONTRACTOR Skanska UK Plc PROJECT VALUE £13 Million PROGRAMME 18 Months

This development consists of two eight storey blocks offering 108 affordable one, two, three and four bedroom homes to tenants over a mix of shared ownership and social rented properties. A key feature of this 5,497m2 development is its energy efficiency and sustainability. A well insulated building combined with underfloor heating results in reduced energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, improved living conditions and increased saleability. Each apartment in this development is up to 44% more energy efficient than standard homes.

The underfloor heating solution used is commonly known as the ‘tacker clip system’ and involves clipping the pipe work directly to a gridded plastic laminate which is pre-glued to an insulation layer. With this system the pipe can be laid in a spiral pattern to ensure an even distribution of heat. The whole installation took just seven weeks to complete, which is an average of four apartments per day. WMS also undertook the controls package, providing individual room temperature control and time control to the hot water system.

Primark, East Ham, London

Primark is one of the UK’s most successful clothing retailers with over 220 stores in the UK, Ireland and Europe. Employing 36,000 people with a turnover of £2.7 billion, Primark has occupied a prime position on the British high street for the past decade.

CASE STUDIES SYSTEM AmbiTak CLIENT Primark Stores Limited ARCHITECT IDL (EU) Ltd CONTRACTOR ISG Pearce Ltd PROJECT VALUE ÂŁ9.5 million PROGRAMME 54 weeks

The project involved the construction of a two storey extension to Primark’s existing store. Structural changes were made to accommodate new goods and customer lift shafts. Additional escalator pits were also dug out for future development and a new service yard and goods loading area were also constructed. Total floor area was increased by 3,328m2 over two floors comprising both retail space and storage areas. The architects wanted a heating system that provided comfortable and

uniform heating across large areas without encroaching on the retail space. Underfloor heating matched these requirements perfectly and it quickly became the preferred choice for this project. WMS used an in-screed AmbiTak system to provide the uniform temperatures required, combined with superior quality Ambiente control systems allowing for variable temperature control to all areas.

3 City Place, Gatwick

The City Place development consisted of the design and construction of a new high quality four storey office block, providing a clean working area to over 500 personnel. The majority of its structure was made up of glass, with panels extending from floor to ceiling on each level creating an open and spacious impression as well as providing plenty of natural daylight.

The building is built in accordance with modern environmentally-friendly standards and is highly selfsustainable and energy efficient. However, energy efficiency is only acceptable when the design leads to a comfortable, healthy working environment. Underfloor heating was considered to be the natural choice for this construction, providing a significantly more cost effective and eco friendly solution as opposed to more traditional heating systems.

Robust, 17mm diameter PE-RT pipe was used throughout this installation. The pipe has 2mm thick walls and is made up of five layers with an internal and external oxygenation barrier to prevent water ingress into the system. It is guaranteed for 50 years although we would expect it to outlive the life of most buildings.

The underfloor installation comprised of our superior AmbiClip screeded floor system, laid over a polythene separating layer and 80mm Celotex insulation on top of the concrete subfloor. The main office areas utilised an access floor allowing for services to run unhindered beneath.

The building boasts over 4.5Km of high performance, 17mm underfloor heating pipe working alongside the latest technology Ambiente manifold sets. Individual, computerised room temperature and timer controllers are located throughout the building with strategically placed room temperature sensors situated in all areas. WMS used an AmbiClip system for the ground floor with a 75mm fibre screed overlay which was power floated to a smooth finish. For the underlying insulation we used a 100mm polyurethane Celotex board with foil on both sides to maximise the reflection of heat upwards. A damp proof membrane/separating layer was laid underneath to prevent moisture permeating through the floor.

WMS designed a bespoke solution for the upper floors with a hybrid screeded floor between timber joists. This had excellent thermal efficiency and maximised output. The system was connected to a state of the art heat pump and operates with various set points including an outside weather compensating control where the temperature of the flow is varied in relation to ambient air temperature. The PE-RT five layer UFH pipe used has a 50 year guarantee and reflects both the building’s intrinsic ‘long lasting quality and sustainability’ and the ethical commitment of Jordans to secure this important building for the long term.

The Architects involved were looking for a heating system that did not encroach on the teaching space as well as achieving maximum comfort, and wanted to maintain environmental standards at all costs. Underfloor heating was the only solution. The whole school was heated through the floor by a tacker system on top of a 50mm laminated polystyrene insulation. The 1,600m2 main building had a tight deadline with the entire system having to be installed in three days! WMS were able to achieve this without compromising our high quality of service.

The private school’s artificial sports ground supports its success in a wide variety of team games and individual sports. It also boasts a separate 250m2 music tutorial building, which contributes to the standards of schooling held to. WMS have provided heating solutions in many educational buildings and are familiar with the requirements, quality of service, and flexibility of timescales they require. Designed by Charles Cockerell in 1845, this Grade I listed building is retained as the frontage for the new museum. The museum plays a key role in Oxford University’s policy of wider access as well as supporting university teaching and research. The project consists of 8,812m2 of new build area, representing a 91% increase in area. The building is arranged over six floors including an excavated lower ground floor level. The spaces created are of high quality and serviced to meet modern museum standards. Underfloor heating was used to heat part of the refurbishment in the form of our AmbiClip screed floor system. The even and gentle form of temperature control that underfloor heating provides made it a natural choice of heating.

The building comprises 37 new gallery spaces for the permanent collection in addition to special exhibitions, a two-storey education centre with designated entrance, office space for the curatorial and administration departments, study collection spaces for the public to view objects by appointment, a new loading bay and transit store for the secure and dry transportation of artifacts and exhibitions, conservation studios and ancillary facilities.

The new facilities feature cross-laminated timber frame and walls, a balustrade staircase with stainless steel mesh and maple wood handrail, cladding and glazing. Energy renewable aspects include rainwater harvesting, a ground source heat pump – utilising buried coils and thermal roof panels, working along with underfloor heating. The main focal point of the building is the state of the art solar shading panels on the exterior and roof.

As every new build school has to comply with the relevant environmental standards and regulations, underfloor heating has become increasingly popular. Running costs have been proved to be up to 30% cheaper than the conventional radiator systems, as well as a generally cleaner and safer form of heating. The practical application of keeping the wall space free from any surface wall heaters is another added benefit.

Many cost saving innovations were used on the build including the use of Kingspan timber panelling. The College has been awarded BREEAM rating – VERY GOOD. The fact that underfloor heating systems work at lower temperatures and stay on for longer periods lends itself towards the renewable heat pump technology.

Cutty Sark, Greenwich

Cutty Sark is the most famous tea clipper ever built and is the only one to survive. Built in 1869 and named after a fleet-footed witch in the Scottish legend of Tam O’Shanter, the ship was almost destroyed by fire in 2007. Following lottery funding and public donations it was decided to conserve the ship to its former glory and build an imaginative new visitor centre at the ship’s home in Greenwich Dock.

The project involved raising the 980 tonne ship by over three metres and constructing a glass canopy over the dry berth to protect the ship’s hull from the elements. This allows visitors to view the clipper’s uniquely shaped ‘built for speed’ hull from below. The new facility also has an indoor shopping area and a cafe. Due to the unusual floor construction in the dry berth area, underfloor heating panels were specially designed by WMS engineers. The installation featured a bespoke, raised floor

build up supported by pedestals holding large calcium sulphate pre-grooved boards to allow the underfloor heating pipe work to be laid flush within each panel. This provided a completely floating floor slab that as the primary heat source, capable of achieving at least 70 watts per metre. This is a unique design and was created by WMS designers using our experience and knowledge of underfloor heating and its wide range of applications.
