The Western Michigan University softball program is under the direction of ninth-year head coach Kathy Leitke, who surpassed the 200 win mark at Western Michigan University during the 2009 season and amassed at least 20 wins for the eighth-straight time in nine seasons at the helm of the Broncos. WMU had three all-conference selections with Lexi Jager and Meredith Whitney earning First Team All-MAC and Brittney Reist earning Second Team All-MAC in 2009. Whitney was also named MAC Freshman of the Year, the second Bronco to ever earn that honor. The Broncos saw sophomore slugger Jager, also named First Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Great Lakes Region, break the single-season and career home run records in 2009 as Broncos earned MidAmerican Conference Player/Pitcher of the Week honors five times. Western Michigan won at least 16 conference games for the fourth time under Leitke and finished second in the MAC West Division for the four time as well, second year in a row. WMU ended the regular season with the second-best conference record in the MAC and earned a spot in the MAC Tournament title game for the sixth time ever and second time since 2006. In 2008 Leitke reached two significant milestones in her career. On April 25, she reached the 500th coaching victory of her career with a 13-3 win over Akron. Two weeks earlier, Leitke reached the 100-win mark in Mid-American Conference games with a 7-2 victory over Buffalo. Leitke and associate head coach Jamie Spitale came to Kalamazoo in 2001. Since her arrival from the junior college ranks, Leitke has developed the Bronco program into one of the top competitors, not only in the MAC, but in the region as well. WMU has surpassed the 30-win plateau in three of the last six seasons, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished in nearly a decade. The Broncos’ current run of seven-consecutive winning MAC records has been accomplished only one other time in program history (1977-84). Fran Ebert’s Broncos accomplished the feat in eight seasons as there was only a conference tournament during the 1982 campaign.

The 2004 season included another deep run into the conference tourney and a second-place finish in the West Division. The all-conference rosters were full of Bronco players, including the MAC Freshman of the Year (Kristi Strange). The 30-win campaign in 2003 was highlighted by a MAC West Division title and an appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Broncos posted a perfect 3-0 record in the league tourney en route to the title and earned the MAC’s automatic postseason bid. The 2002 Bronco squad improved its win total by nine games from the previous year and advanced to the six-team Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time since 1997. WMU posted a winning league slate and posted the most overall wins in several seasons. The roster also featured the program’s first .300 hitter and all-league selections since 1999. Since her arrival in the spring of 2000, Leitke has overseen upgrades in both facilities and the team schedule. In each of the past four years, WMU has played some of the top squads in the nation during its spring trip.
Leitke, who arrived in Kalamazoo from nearby Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, is the program’s fourth head coach in its 25-year history. At LMC, Leitke guided the Indians to a 312-167 (.651) record in nine seasons, including a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship in 1993. Leitke’s tenure also produced six Western Conference titles, five Region XII championships and five national tournament appearances. Highly respected in her profession, Leitke was named NJCAA and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Coach of the Year in 1993. She was tabbed the regional coach of the year five times, league coach of the year on four occasions and NFCA East Region Coach of the Year three times.
Western Michigan reached 20 wins for the eighth time in nine seasons under Leitke in 2009, finishing the year 25-22 and 16-6 in the MAC. The Broncos boasted two first team All-MAC selections in Becky Bartosz and Kyla Sullivan and the program’s second MAC All-Freshman Team selection in three years with Lexi Jager. Jager was also named second team All-MAC.
In 1999, both Leitke and current Bronco associate head coach Jamie Spitale were selected to coach a team of junior college all-stars in Canada. The team competed against world-ranked teams which participated in the 2000 Olympics.
WMU is also one of only two programs to advance to the MAC Tournament in each of the last seven opportunities.
Prior to taking over the head coaching post at LMC in 1991, Leitke served as both an assistant coach (1988-91, 1985-87) and assistant director of intercollegiate athletics (1988-91) at the school.
WMU notched another 20-win season in 2007 after claiming its third regular season title in 2006, going 31-13 and 18-4 in the MAC, during the regular season. The Broncos earned the top seed in the postseason tournament in 2006, falling in the championship game. Leitke was named MAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her tenure in Kalamazoo. She became the second coach ever to win the award (Kim Worden, 1997) and the only WMU softball coach to win it outright.
In 1991, Leitke was also named the college’s director of athletics. While serving as an assistant, the Indians claimed five league titles, four region championships and made four national tournament appearances.
Then junior Kristi Strange led the nation in doubles per game (0.48) in 2006, while also setting the team and conference marks for doubles in a season. Under Leitke’s tutelage, then junior Amanda Heckaman broke the school record for RBI in a game with seven. This feat was matched by Becky Bartosz against Illinois-Chicago during the 2007 campaign.
After beginning her collegiate studies at Lake Michigan College (1980-83), where she was a two-time All-American, Leitke earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1985.
The Broncos finished second in the West Division for the second-straight year in 2005, earning yet another appearance in the league’s postseason event. WMU finished 14-9 in league action and had a pair of student-athletes tabbed to the First Team All-MAC squad.
Leitke served as an assistant coach for the Broncos in 1988 under head coach Kim Worden.
The youngest of six children, Leitke’s parents (Rein and Tina) have been lifelong residents of nearby Dowagiac, Mich. Her sister, Judy Truitt, graduated from Western Michigan University. Leitke has a total of 16 nieces and nephews, five great nieces and two great nephews.

SPITALE BY THE NUMBERS
SPITALE Jamie Spitale (formerly Mandarino), who arrived with head coach Kathy Leitke in Kalamazoo for the 2001 season, was promoted to associate head coach on July 18, 2005 and has been with the program for nine years. The St. Joseph, Mich., native completed a standout career as a player under Leitke at Lake Michigan College before returning to the school in 1997 as an assistant coach. At WMU, Spitale focuses her efforts on recruiting and team development while also working closely with the Bronco pitchers, catchers and infielders. It was another banner year for the Bronco pitching staff led by 2009 MAC Freshman of the Year Meredith Whitney. Whitney became the first Bronco pitcher in program history to earn the award and was also named First Team All-MAC, a member of the MAC All-Freshman Team and the MAC All-Tournament Team. She finished her rookie campaign with 196 strikeouts, the third most in a single-season at WMU. Her star pupil in 2007 and 2008 was Kyla Sullivan. The Saugus, Calif., native earned Second Team All-MAC and All-NFCA Great Lakes Region as a junior and improved to First Team All-MAC during her senior campaign. Sullivan combined with Kelli Zache for the program’s first no-hitter since 2006 with a five-inning no-no against Northern Illinois on April 5, 2008. The Bronco pitching staff was highlighted by Krysten Shumaker in 2006. Shumaker ranked 22nd in the nation in ERA (1.10), 27th in strikeouts per game (9.1) and fifth in saves (5). She also eclipsed the WMU single season strike out mark (239) previously held by Laura Stewart, who held the mark at 237 in 2004 under Spitale’s tutelage. Under Spitale’s guidance, the Bronco pitching staff has shown marked improvement and featured all-conference performers in each of the last six seasons: Laura Stewart (2003 and 2004), Jaymie Voss (2004), Tricia VanDerSlik (2005), Shumaker (2006) and Sullivan (2007 and 2008).

As an assistant at LMC (1997-2000), Spitale helped numerous players develop into nationally recognized student-athletes, including three All-America selections. Nine players earned all-conference accolades, four were named to the all-state team and four garnered all-region honors during her tenure. While at LMC, Spitale also served as the department’s assistant athletic director, focusing her efforts on academics. During her tenure, 93 percent of the second-year students transferred to a four-year school and 41 athletes were named academic all-league. The school had five student-athletes garner Academic All-America honors and 39 were named to the Academic “A” Team during the time Spitale was directing the program’s academic success. An Academic All-American selection as a player, the pitching standout helped lead LMC to the national championship in 1993. She pitched a shutout in the semifinal game of that title run, teaming up with former assistant coach Wendy Swinehart to claim the top spot in the nation. During her playing career, Spitale played on two regional championship squads, earned allconference, all-region and all-state honors and was a second team All-America honoree. In 2003, Spitale was inducted into the St. Joseph’s High School Hall of Fame for her efforts on the softball field. Spitale was married to Joe (Spitale) on Nov. 25, 2006 and the couple welcomed their first child, Haley (2), on May 30, 2007. Two of Spitale’s three siblings attended and graduated from Western Michigan University.

2010 Western Michigan Softball The Western Michigan University softball program plays all of its home games at Ebert Field, conveniently located on campus in near proximity to all of the WMU athletic facilities.
SOFTBALL FACILITIES
The complex was renovated during the summer and fall of 2005 to enhance the experience of the fans as well as provide a quality venue for the Broncos. The renovation included the installation of stadium bleachers and a state-of-the-art press box, equipped with a separate video tower located high above the press box. A concessions stand with public facilities was also constructed as a part of the renovations. The now 500-seat stadium also went through changes in 2000 and 2001. The parking lot was expanded to accommodate both baseball and softball. A fence surrounding the perimeter of the field was added and wind screens were installed on the outfield fence to help combat the windy conditions associated with the park. With Ebert Field earning the reputation as a pitchers’ field, the entire fenceline was moved in after the 2000 season. Straightaway center is now 220’ and both corners measure out at 200’. Prior to reconstruction, left field did have the shortest porch at 219’, while center was 225’ and right measured 226’. Prior to the work being completed, both the home and visitor dugouts were remodeled and a new scoreboard was installed. The complex also contains a pair of batting cages as well as a bullpen and storage area. The field was named after the late WMU coach and professor Fran Ebert (1930-2008). A selection to the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame, Ebert began the softball program at Western Michigan in 1976 and went on to compile an overall record of 270-116-1 in 10 seasons. She was named Woman of the Year by the Varsity “W’ Club in 2000. Ebert led the Broncos to a pair of AIAW College World Series appearances (1980-81) and one trip to the NCAA College World Series (1982). In 2000, Ebert was one of the three indviduals inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame at the national convention. In 1985, Western Michigan’s Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to name the school’s diamond in her honor and it was dedicated on June 29 of that year.
FRAN EBERT (1930-2008)
Fran Ebert, the namesake for the Broncos’ home field, passed away on Nov. 7, 2008 at the age of 78. “She was the epitome of a coach,” said Christine Hoyles, an associate AD at WMU from 1976-88. “Her teams competed with excellence and civility.

Kathy Beauregard, the Director of Athletics at Western Michigan University, has been involved with the Broncos in several capacities over the course of the past 29 years. She is the second-longest serving athletic director in the Mid-American Conference.
KATHY BEAUREGARD
Beauregard arrived in Kalamazoo as a coach before moving into administration and is entering her 12th season as mentor of one of the top programs in the MAC.
Along with four MAC titles (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s tennis) in 2003-04, the Broncos also enjoyed an increased level of success in the classroom. WMU’s graduation rate of 83 percent in 2003 ranked eighth nationally and featured a program grade point average of nearly 3.00. On the playing field in 2002-03, the athletics campaign was highlighted by a pair of conference titles in women’s basketball and softball. The men’s basketball team also made a postseason appearance, competing in the National Invitation Tournament. Postseason appearances by the WMU football, volleyball and men’s tennis team highlighted the program’s 2000-01 athletic competition.
WMU athletic facilities have greatly improved under Beauregard’s leadership. The $8-million dollar Bill Brown Football Alumni Center and the $21-million Seelye Athletic Indoor Center have benefited numerous sports teams and provide top-notch facilities for Bronco student-athletes. The locker rooms at Lawson Ice Arena were renovated and completed over the past year and the department continues to raise funds for the Hyames Field Renovation Project. WMU is in the midst of building a two million dollar state-of-the-art facility and Field Turf was also installed at Waldo Stadium during the Summer of 2006.
The 1999-2000 campaign was highlighted by the football team’s West Division title and trip to the MAC Championship. The women’s tennis squad captured the MAC Tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the women’s basketball squad made its second-consecutive appearance in the WNIT.
Heavily involved in her profession, Beauregard assumed the chair position of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee in 2001, a position which she held for two years. She represented WMU as a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and NCAA Football Bowl Certification Committee and currently serves on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Previously the senior associate athletic director (1993-97), she supervised all revenue sports, the University’s compliance with NCAA rules, academic services, student-athlete welfare, and athletic marketing and communications.
The 2008-09 year saw the Bronco volleyball and men’s tennis programs capture regular season MAC crowns. The volleyball team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament, while the Bronco football team participated in its second bowl in three seasons and the men’s basketball team won yet another MAC West title.
In just her second year (1998-99), Beauregard provided support which helped the Bronco men’s athletic squads jump from 10th to first place in the Reese Cup standings, giving Western Michigan a share of its first all-sports trophy in 17 years.
Beauregard initially came to WMU in 1979 as head women’s gymnastics coach. In nine seasons (1980-88), she produced two MAC title teams and was twice named the conference’s coach of the year. Beauregard has been active in numerous community service organizations, including Kalamazoo Rotary, the American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council.
The 2007-08 academic year saw success within the department, on the playing field and in the classroom. WMU Athletics announced the renovation of historic Hyames Field. Heading into the future, the facility will be known as Robert J. Bobb Stadium and will undergo $2.0 million of work over the next year. Renovations to Sorensen Courts, Fran Ebert Field and upcoming work to the men’s basketball locker rooms all highlight Beauregard’s dedication to moving WMU Athletics forward.
Honored by numerous organizations throughout her career, Beauregard was awarded both the Woman of Achievement Award (YWCA) and Athena Award (Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce) in 2002.
Athletically, WMU’s tennis programs found success yet again with both winning a regular season MAC title and the men’s program capturing the tournament title to earn a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Dave Morin and Besty Kuhle were named MAC Coaches of the Year for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs captured MAC West titles during the past athletic season. A pair of Bronco track student-athletes earned All-America honors with Becky Horn earning the nod during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finishing third in the 800m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
In 2000, Beauregard received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.
Beauregard is a native of Kalamazoo and graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1979 and a master’s degree from WMU in 1981.
She and husband, Rick, have a 18-year-old son, Brad, who will attend WMU in 2009. Rick retired from Kalamazoo Public Schools after 32 years of service and began Beauregard Home Services in the Fall of 2006.
Beauregard ensured the longevity of WMU’s football and men’s basketball programs by restructuring Bill Cubit’s and Steve Hawkins’ contracts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. WMU Athletics also welcomed Tasha McDowell as the fifth head coach of WMU’s women’s basketball program in 2008. Academically, WMU boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in Anthony Gebhart (first team) and Joe Reitz (second team). Gebhart was the first football representative since 1998. Volleyball, baseball and gymnastics finished in the top 10 among other like programs in the APR and WMU football had the highest APR score in the MAC for the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, 415 student-athletes finished 2007-08 with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. In 2006-07, men’s and women’s tennis not only repeated as MAC Tournament champions but captured regular season titles as well. Both Morin and Kuhle earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. The WMU football team participated in the program’s first postseason bowl game since 1988. The Broncos boasted three NCAA statistical champions in five categories — Ameer Ismail (FB - sacks and tackles for loss); Carrie Moore (WBB - points per game) and Mark Letestu (HOCKEY - freshman scoring and short-handed goals). Western Michigan continued to pursue excellence in the classroom in 2006-07 as 26 student-athletes in 14 sports earned Academic All-MAC status. WMU had five of its programs honored as being in the top-10 percent in their respective sport in the announcement for their excellence in the classroom over the years identified in the most recent APR; baseball, men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Broncos boasted five academic all-district selections and a pair of academic all-americans in Joe Reitz and Carrie Moore. Moore and Ismail earned All-America status in their respective sports with Moore receiving honorable mention for Kodak All-American and Ismail earning Second Team AP All-American.

In 2005-06, Beauregard oversaw a department that captured the Jacoby Cup Trophy, awarded to the top women’s program in the MAC based on sports standings. WMU has now won the Jacoby and Reese (men’s overall sports award) trophies during Beauregard’s tenure. The Broncos garnered three regular season titles — gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis and two MAC Tournament titles — gymnastics and women’s tennis. Under Beauregard’s direction, WMU also won its 100th MAC title all-time in 2005-06. The 2004-05 athletic campaign continued what has become common place at Western Michigan. Team and individual success began in the fall and continued through the spring, highlighted by a MAC Championship in women’s tennis. The strength of the women’s programs as a group allowed WMU to finish second in the Jacoby Cup.
