Making Weather Observations for a week At Glebe House From 1 s t February to 7 t h February 2016
Observations made by Daniel and Linda, report by Mark and Linda
Introduction We made a rain gauge from a squash bottle, cut off the top and turned it upside down to make a funnel. The black line shows the level to which we filled the gauge at the start, above the curved base. We buried the gauge in the vegetable patch.
The max-min thermometer was beside our oil tank, out of the sun. We took readings of the rainfall and temperature at 4pm each day.
Weather forecasts These pictures show two five-day weather forecasts for St Day, from the BBC web site.
Mark also set up a data logger in the greenhouse, that recorded light levels and temperature every 10 minutes. The thermometer was in the shade, but not fully protected from the sun, so it sometimes recorded higher temperatures than the thermometer beside the oil tank. The most interesting weather during the week was the heavy rainfall on Saturday, which caused flooding in Cornwall. We saw pictures of the flooding on the BBC local news.

From internet Weather forecast for this day as shown the day before
09:12
09:16
Tuesday looks bright but blustery with long sunny spells. There may be one or two showers but most should stay dry. Through the day the winds will ease.
09:18
A few showers at first, but these soon clearing to leave a mostly fine if chilly afternoon, as winds moderate a little. Further wet weather is expected by late evening.
09:22
Most of the region will be dry with variable, often large, amounts of cloud. There will however be a few drizzly patches, these most likely on hills and moors. Mild.
09:25
Mostly cloudy with some patchy rain through the day. Heavier rain will arrive by evening, with strong winds and coastal gales.
09:28
Very wet and windy across all areas, especially southern hills. Rain will often be heavy leading to a risk of localised flooding. Strong winds with gales around coasts and hills.
09:31
A brighter day with blustery showers and occasional sunny spells, however more persistent rain will arrive across Devon and Cornwall in the afternoon. Gales developing later in the west.
