W.M. Whitaker & Associates is a full-service Landscape Architecture firm founded in the Chattanooga metropolitan area in 2013. William Matthew “Matt” Whitaker spent his formative years outdoors learning first-hand about the region’s natural history and ecosystems. His passion to help others connect with the environment led him to pursue a career in landscape architecture and to form W.M. Whitaker & Associates. FIRM PHILOSOPHY Our firm’s philosophy is inspired by nature. Landscape designs based on natural processes are more efficient, more stable, and inherently sustainable. We believe design is best informed when the nature of a place is viewed though a local lens. Our work is informed by a wide range of factors: natural resources, traditions, climate, circulation patterns, hydrology, geology, landforms and ecosystems. Through this process, we create Place – rooted in locale – from space. With combined experience of 24 years working throughout the U.S. and meticulous attention to detail, we excel at providing customers with second-to-none service and delivering projects within budget. Our staff boasts experience in a variety of project types and scales including large scale urban, mixed-use, open space/park design, agricultural and single family residential. Many projects involve sites with ecological, cultural and historic significance. Specialties include environmental analysis, on-structure/intensive green roofs, green infrastructure, stormwater design and habitat restoration. Areas of expertise include extensive knowledge of Eastern North American native plants, their habitat and ecology. The firm is licensed to provide professional landscape architectural services in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, and Maryland. Additional professional certifications include ISA Certified Arborist and LEED Accredited Professional BD+C and ND.

Native Meadow

Albemarle County, Virginia Native Meadow is a private residence in the Piedmont foothills of Virginia. The site, originally consisting of abandoned fescue pasture and minimal tree cover, was slated for small-scale development. Purchased by the client in 2004, she tasked the design team with developing a plan for the house and gardens that would minimize their ecological footprint and with restoring the remaining site’s ecological health. The resulting design located the home and gardens between forest and meadow. The use of native plants and local materials throughout serves to connect with the natural surroundings. Among the gardens are the “cultural” and “meadow” gardens, organized around edible and native plants, respectively. The cultural garden features fruits, vegetables, herbs, and cutting flowers. The meadow garden is a stylized Country Garden whose palette is composed of native meadow species. The garden serves as a nursery for on-going site restoration projects as thinned plants are collected and used in areas of reclamation. PROJECT SIZE DATE ROLE

Waterfront Botanical Garden Louisville, Kentucky

Developed on a former landfill site, the Waterfront Botanical Garden was a rare opportunity to remediate a blighted urban area and create an iconic civic space for the city of Louisville. The project involved master planning and programming for the 23 acre site, incorporating sustainable technologies, cutting edge architecture, and splendid garden exhibits. The garden design focuses on the use of native plant communities in all collections and offers multiple educational opportunities to demonstrate sustainable efforts. The design process integrated valuable community input, resulting in a world-class facility that has received considerable praise from neighborhood members and city officials. PROJECT SIZE DATE ROLE

Hahn Meadow Garden

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Blacksburg, Virginia The Meadow Garden is a 2.5 acre garden within the Hahn Horticulture Complex on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute campus. The garden is an educational space showcasing native grasses, perennials, shrubs, and trees found across Virginia’s varied physiographic regions from the mountains to the coastal plains. Along with a two-thirds acre native meadow, the garden includes a number of display and demonstration areas. A buffalo grass field demonstrates a native, low maintenance, ecologically friendly alternative to the conventional lawn. The 75 seat terraced hillside amphitheater, built with Virginia Tech’s signature Hokie Stone, provides a gathering event space within the Meadow Garden. PROJECT SIZE BUDGET DATE ROLE

National Public Radio Washington, DC

National Public Radio’s new headquarters contain both the corporate offices and the broadcasting studios for NPR’s national programming. The landscape design reflects NPR’s ethos by creating open gathering spaces and incorporating new landscape technologies. The project’s streetscapes incorporate Low Impact Development (LID) strategies in the tree planters, which collect stormwater from the adjacent sidewalk and street, removing pollutants before the water reaches the city’s storm sewer system. The entry features a large plaza with benches, steps, and a sculpture to provide seating. This “front porch” creates an opportunity for public gatherings and fosters a sense of openness and accessibility, reflecting NPR’s mission. The landscape design also incorporates roof terraces, which use both intensive and extensive technologies to provide spaces for employee use. PROJECT SIZE BUDGET DATE ROLE

College of Coastal Georgia Brunswick, Georgia

Founded in 1961, the College of Coastal Georgia is located on 193 acres in the city of Brunswick. From its current semester enrollment peak of over 3,000 students, the College plans academic and infrastructure improvements to accommodate 10,000 students. The design team used this opportunity to help develop a flexible framework for future campus growth by repositioning the campus to take advantage of existing site features. The site design is centered on a campus green that replaced an existing parking lot and a series of entry plazas that anchor the Lawn. The plazas provide much needed outdoor activity space for informal dining, studying, social interaction, and other campus events. Through the use of native vegetation and preservation of existing site features, the design team was able to create a beautiful and sustainable landscape that speaks to the unique character of coastal Georgia. North Bethesda Market Bethesda, Maryland

North Bethesda Market is a high-density mixed use development with 425,000 square feet of residential space and 220,000 square feet of retail, including restaurants, stores and a Whole Foods Market. Located two blocks south of the White Flint Metro Station, the transit oriented development provides on and off street bike paths as well as five distinct streetscapes. A plaza and fountain serve as a central knuckle to the public realm and connect multiple streets. The plaza and fountain are located on structure above below-grade parking and a gym. The design was inspired by the region’s geology and the proximity of the “fall line” which results from the transition between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions. This served to inspire the fountain, art, planting, and materiality. Local Carderock was utilized on site walls, the fountain and benches. The renowned artist Jim Sanborn created a public art piece inspired by Nelson Byrd Woltz’s design vision. The roof amenity spaces included two swimming pools, a game lawn, pergolas, a fire pit, gathering spaces, and gardens. Site stormwater is managed with a rain garden on the Rockville Pike streetscape, intensive and extensive green roofs covering a majority of the buildings and underground storage tanks. Mococa Beach Development Caraguatatuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil

With a significant natural preserve and numerous municipal limitations, the development on Mococa Beach was an exercise in creative master planning. Working closely with the architecture, the design allowed for unobstructed ocean views for all residents while providing a wide range of amenities for guests. Long, continuous boardwalks connect housing blocks to both pristine natural preserves and white sand beaches. Combined with a plethora of amenities such as sculptural playgrounds, sports courts, and open lawn areas, the development offers a spectrum of activities for guests to engage. Pockets of usable green space breakup a substantial parking requirement and maintain the development’s natural feel and ecological sensitivity. The chic waterfront pool, club, and native garden are sited on the property’s high point to provide unmatched views of the Brazilian coast. PROJECT SIZE DATE ROLE

Streamline Broad Street Chattanooga, Tennessee Streamline Broad Street re-imagines a new pedestrian and commercial district that emphasizes safety, sustainability, and quality of urban design in downtown Chattanooga. Parking and traffic flow are redistributed to optimize car travel lanes, protect cyclists, and create larger pedestrian spaces. The added sidewalk area provides space for outdoor cafes, benches, bike parking, newspaper boxes, street fairs, and other special events. Bikers have dedicated, separated lanes and cue in front of stopped traffic at intersections to keep them in view and provide a head start. Curb extensions at crosswalks shorten pedestrian exposure and travel distance, slow traffic, and reduce unnecessary vehicular paving at intersections. The intersection of Broad Street and MLK Boulevard acts as the gateway to the City Center with Broad Street terminating at the Tennessee Aquarium and River. To strengthen these vital intersections, the pedestrian scramble crosswalks allow comfortable crossings while all other traffic is halted. The redesigned streetscape showcases sustainability through the integration of multiple green infrastructure improvements such as uncompacted soils to support large canopy trees, porous paving, and rain gardens. Trees reduce stormwater through interception and evapotranspiration. Rain gardens and porous paving provide infiltration and distributed storage. The resulting run-off volumes and peak flows are greatly reduced while prime urban public space is created. PROJECT SIZE DATE ROLE
