Head Coach Jim Beichner

HEAD Coach JIM BEICHNER

The University at Buffalo wrestling program has undergone a complete turnaround with much of its success due to the hard work of head coach Jim Beichner. In 15 seasons, Beichner has guided Buffalo to a 135-98-4 (.578) dual meet record and has coached 35 Bulls at the NCAA Championships with eight qualifying twice. For the third time in Beichner’s tenure, the Bulls have four wrestlers - John-Martin Cannon, Desi Green, Jimmy Hamel and Jimmy Hamel in the national championships. In 2001, the Bulls set the program mark for most NCAA qualifiers in a season, tying the mark in 2009. Beichner arrived at UB for the 1995-96 season, and guided the Bulls to a 10-4 dual meet record after the team went winless in the season prior to his arrival. The Bulls captured third place in the East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) Tournament and sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships where they each posted wins, the first-ever tournament wins for UB since its return to Division I. Additionally, Beichner was recognized for his efforts, receiving the New York State Division I and ECWA Coach of the Year awards, in addition to Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach of the Year honors. Beichner has made a tremendous impact at the University at Buffalo. He has taken the program from a team with a combined six wins in the four years prior to his arrival to 50 wins in his first five seasons. With 135 dual meet wins, Beichner ranks behind only Ed Michael’s 213 career wins at Buffalo. Beichner and his staff have brought some of the best that collegiate wrestling has to offer to the Western New York area and continue to build a program that is making trips to the NCAA Championships on a regular basis. In recognition of the respect he has earned in collegiate wrestling from his peers, Beichner currently serves as President of the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Beichner and his wife, Diane have three children, Jake, Sam, and Grace.

Assistant Coaches

Assistant Coach Frank Beasley

Assistant Coach Jeff Catrabone

A former NJCAA All-American, Frank Beasley is in his third season as an assistant wrestling coach at UB.

A three-time All-American at the University of Michigan, Jeff Catrabone begins his fifth season as a UB assistant wrestling coach.

“Frank has had a good range of experience for the short time he’s been around and I think that is a positive. What I saw in Frank is his honesty, that he’s very mature and has high integrity. When you add all of those puzzle pieces up he looks like a very good assistant wrestling coach,” said head coach Jim Beichner. “I’m really pleased to have him here, we are all excited and we are thrilled to have him.

“Jeff brings a wealth of experience in the sport of wrestling,” head coach Jim Beichner said. “All I see is positives with him joining our team. I think he is going to do a great job for us.”

Beasley comes to Buffalo after working as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Bloomsburg University, for a year and a half. While coaching at Bloomsburg, Beasley served as the personal coach for Mike Spaid, who became Bloomsburg’s first All-American in 13 years, and also helped the Huskies send five other wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. “UB has given me a great opportunity. I truly believe that Buffalo can be a great program in a couple of years,” Beasley said. “I want to help lead Buffalo to be a top-15 team nationally and producing All-Americans on a consistent basis.” Beasley began his collegiate wrestling career at Lincoln College where he earned All-American honors in 2004 wrestling at 165 pounds. Beasley helped the Lynx earn seventh place at the NJCAA Nationals in 2004 and he was also a two-time NJCAA AllAcademic selection. Following two years at Lincoln, Beasley moved on to Bloomsburg where he wrestled for former UB grappler John Stutzman, collecting 29 victories in two seasons. Beasley finished fourth at the 2006 Eastern Wrestling League Championships. Beasley is a native of Odin, Illinois.

Catrabone came to Buffalo after five seasons as head coach at Erie (PA) Cathedral Prep, where he coached five District-10 final teams, four state placewinners and an All-American. Catrabone finished his collegiate career, 160-27, earning a seventh-place NCAA finish in 1996 and third-place finishes in 1997 and 1998. He was also a three-time Big Ten finalist and holds the Michigan school record for all-time pins with 55. After graduating with a degree in sports management and communications in 1998, Catrabone moved to Erie to become the manager of Braendel Painting and Services. In 2000, Catrabone was named the head coach of Cathedral Prep and he successfully guided the Ramblers to a 65-20 dual meet record in five seasons. “He is dedicated to the sport,” Beichner said. “He has a lot of experience on the mats with young kids. He is a positive influence and has an upbeat attitude. He is a good technician and is very good at organizing, which is seen through his recruiting skills.” In his own prep career at Harborcreek High School, Catrabone earned two Pennsylvania state crowns, finishing 145-12 with 98 falls before graduating in 1993. He also is the owner and president of The Pennsylvania Wrestling News, one of the most prestigious prep high school wrestling journals in the country. The son of Gregory and Johanne, Catrabone has one brother, Greg, and two sisters, Kristen and Michelle. Catrabone lives in East Amherst with his wife, Amy, and his son, Cameron.
