SMITH RECEIVES CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR Junior Brianna Smith earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for her game-winning goals in the Golden Griffins’ sweep of conference opponents Saint Peter’s and Manhattan. For the second consecutive contest, Smith scored the game-winning goal, as the Golden Griffins defeated Manhattan by the score of 2-1 in the team’s home finale at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Prior to Sunday’s win, Smith rallied the Griffs to a 3-2 comeback win in double overtime over Saint Peter’s on Friday evening with her first career hat trick. With just under three minutes remaining, Smith buried a one-on-one opportunity to give the Griffs a 3-2 win and their first conference win of the season. Smith led the Griffs’ offense, accounting for close to half of the team’s 28 total shots with 12 in the contest. TURNING ON THE OFFENSE Smith helped snap the Griffs’ six game winless streak in the win over the Peacocks. Smith has accounted for six of the Griffs’ last seven goals since opening conference play on Iona on Oct. 5, registering 12 points in the span of four games. As the Griffs’ leading goal scorer and point leader, she currently has ten goals for 20 points on the season. She is currently the MAAC leading goal scorer and is tied for the lead in gamewinning goals (3). STEPPING UP IN GOAL Entering the Griffs’ contest as relief on Friday evening against Saint Peter’s in the 11th minute, sophomore Brigid St. Leger incurred a 2-0 deficit. The sophomore kept the Peacocks scoreless, while the Griffs’ offense staged a 3-2 comeback win in double overtime for the team’s first conference win of the season. St. Leger registered her first career win in over 75 minutes of action with one save against the Peacocks. Earning her second career start on Sunday afternoon against Manhattan, the Cazenovia, N.Y. native tied her career game-high with nine saves to collect her second consecutive win. On the weekend, the sophomore posted a 0.54 GAA and a .909 save percentage with a 2-0-0 record.

2012 CANISIUS WOMEN’S SOCCER • GAME NOTES vs. RIDER/LOYOLA (MD.)

THE FOUNTAIN YOUTH The Golden Griffins field a young team in 2012, including nine freshmen. Besides the three seniors, the other 14 returning letterwinners have played in 210 combined contests with 125 starts or an average of 8.9 starts for the Griffs entering this season. Seniors Brooke Bandazian, Keily Funk, and Emily Paquette have played in a combined 153 games with 50 starts entering their final season. WE ARE YOUNG Beyond the players in the field, the Golden Griffins are young in goal. The Griffs goalkeeping staff is made of three returning letterwinners inTock, Brigid St. Leger, and Deanna Bowers and newcomer Kailee DeFranks. The returners have made a combined 10 career appearances. Tock is the only goalkeeper on the Griffs’ roster with starting experience in six contests. Last season, Tock primarily served as a backup before starting in three of the Griffs’ last four games. Tock started in four of five appearances last season with a 1.53 GAA and a .806 save-percentage. Tock is looking to replace 2011 graduate Caroline Robert, who started in 15 contests for the Griffs last year. YOUR CAPTAINS FOR THE SEASON At the start of the season, Wendling announced the selection of three upperclassmen captains for the 2012 season. Serving as captains this season will be seniors Funk and Paquette and junior Kelly McMahon. A two-time MAAC All-Academic selection, Funk has played in 62 career games for Canisius. Paquette provides the Griffs with leadership along the backline, playing in a total of 63 games as a Griff. A junior, McMahon adds a strong presence in the midfield as an upperclassman. SELECTED TO FINISH SIXTH IN MAAC In the MAAC Coaches Preseason Poll, Canisius was picked to finish in a tie with Iona for sixth place. Last season, the Golden Griffins compiled an 8-7-4 overall record and a 3-3-3 record in conference play. From this past season, the Golden Griffins lost six letterwinners, all starters. The Griffs have a large void to fill in leadership and offensive production with the graduation of all-time career assist (35) and point leader (107), Kelly Reinwald. Last season, the senior Griff led the team in goals (10), assists (11), points (31), and shots (75).

Jim Wendling • Dayton ‘83 HEAD COACH • FIFTH SEASON

Jim Wendling is in his fifth season at the helm of the Canisius College women’s soccer program. In his three previous seasons on the Golden Griffins’ bench, Wendling has helped turn around the Blue and Gold, highlighted by the school’s first MAAC regular-season crown in 2010 thanks to a school-record 14 wins. In his previous three seasons at Canisius, Wendling has compiled 50 total wins, with 22 of those coming in MAAC action. The 2008 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year, he is the first coach in school history to lead the Griffs to three-straight MAAC Championship Tournament appearances. In 2010, the Blue and Gold advanced to the MAAC Championship game for the second time in school history, and he helped guide a defensive unit that posted a single-season school record with eight shutout victories. The team posted an overall record of 8-7-4 in 2011, his fourth season with the Griffs. With a 3-3-3 record in MAAC play, the team finished sixth in the league standings. In 2011, former Griff Kelly Reinwald celebrated her four-year career with Wendling by becoming the all-time leader in both points (107) and assists (35). In addition, the Stafford, Va native earned her second CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Second Team selection for her success on the field and in the classroom. In his first year as Canisius’ head coach, Wendling led Canisius to an 11-5-3 overall mark and a 6-3 conference record. In his second season, the Blue and Gold went 13-4-3 record and 4-3-2 MAAC action. The 13 wins in 2009 stood as the most for the program in one season until that mark was passed in 2010. Wendling was named the fifth women’s soccer coach in school history March 3, 2008. Before joining the Canisius team, he spent nine years as the men’s and women’s soccer head coach at Urbana University. During his tenure there, Wendling started both the men’s and women’s soccer programs and guided two student-athletes to All-America status. He also coached eight all-region players, two-conference freshman of the Year and 58 all-conference performers. Wendling led the women’s soccer team to 72 wins in seven years, recording a winning record in five of the seasons. The men’s team won 50 games in five years under his direction. Before leading the Urbana soccer teams, Wendling spent three years with the Wittenberg women’s soccer program, including serving as head coach during the 1995 season.

What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best allaround athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
