Canisius, Will-East & Wheatfield Crowned Champs BY DAVE RICCI
CATHOLIC
SMALL SCHOOL
LARGE SCHOOL
Never underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned rivalry to bring out the best in everyone. With three rivalries in one night, who could ask for anything more? Canisius, Niagara Wheatfield and Williamsville East made their championship dreams come true when they emerged as winners during the Super Monday High School Hockey championships, held at the First Niagara Center on March 2. A five-point performance by Garrett Downie helped Niagara Wheatfield win a 6-4 shootout over Williamsville-North for the Large School title. Will-East blanked Kenmore East, 2-0, for a second year in a row to claim back-to-back Small School titles. And Canisius shocked top-seeded St. Joe’s with a 2-1 win to claim the Catholic title and set the stage for their run to the NYSCHSAA championship on March 8. CATHOLIC Clearly the underdogs in this meeting, the Crusaders tied St. Joe’s in their second regular season meeting. But if they had any hopes of winning on Super Monday, they would have to shake the mental side of being dominated by their rivals in a 5-1 loss in their first meeting. “We had a little talk in the locker room before the game and we brought up the fact that Joe’s kind of took it to us at the beginning of the year in a 5-1 game,” said coach Sam Belsito Jr. “We thought that we kind of quit on ourselves in that game. We talked about that and we talked about how they were going to be coming at us again and this time we were a little more mentally prepared for them. We bent a little, but we played a great third period. We stayed composed and got out of it.” Belsito, who returned to head coaching duties after a three-season hiatus, must have struck a chord inside his players with his words, and the Crusaders did not back down one inch against the more physical and experienced Marauders team that won 21 games this season. George Munschauer took the weight of the world off of his team’s shoulders when he scored the opening goal on the power play 3:07 into the second period. Munschauer took a feed from Kurt Villani and fired a wrister over the right shoulder of St. Joe’s keeper Ben Higgins. “It’s nuts,” said Munschauer. “I’ve been here for four years and we’ve never really got to this point where we’ve come together this much and played as a team. It’s just a great feeling to finally beat them.” Jake Nichols stopped 27 shots to earn team MVP. The lone hiccup came when Jacob Colosanti beat Nichols with 2.4 seconds to play in the game. Grigorios Koutsomitis scored the game winner with 34 seconds to play when Joe’s pulled Higgins for the extra attacker. Brendan Dallas would be named MVP a week later when Canisius defeated Chaminade (L.I.) 6-1 for the state title. LARGE SCHOOL After skating to a pair of 1-0 finals, both won by Wheatfield in the regular season, this was far from the defensive battle that everyone was expecting. Then again, anything can happen when the Falcons and Spartans lock horns.

GOOD OLD-FASHIONED RIVALRY BROUGHT OUT BEST IN EVERYONE ON SUPER MONDAY
5 SUPER MONDAY FEATURES THREE RIVALRIES IN ONE NIGHT Andrew Logar scored what proved to be the game-winner off a pass from Downie 4:45 into the third. But it was the four-goal outing by Downie that stole the show as the Falcons claimed their fourth straight WNY Federation Large School title. “It feels amazing,” said Downie. “There’s no words for it.” It wasn’t just the fact that Downie, who would be named the No. 2 spot on the WKBW Super 7 Athlete of the Week list, scored four times. What earned him Super Monday MVP honors was the manner in which he scored. Downie, who scored a natural hat trick that put the Falcons up 3-1, got his first goal when he fought off two Spartans and did a spin move before firing the puck by goalie Nick Stafford. The second came when Downie intercepted a pass in the Will-North end, slid into the slot, and beat Stafford. But Will-North didn’t pack their bags. Far from it. They battled back with a late goal in the second and an early goal in the third to make it a 4-4 tie, just 35 seconds into the third. Downie, after setting up Logar’s winner, would add the empty netter to secure the win for the Falcons, who have met Will-North in five of the last seven Large School games. Looking to regain the momentum after Will-North cut the lead to 4-3, Wrazin pulled senior keeper Casey Wall and put in soph Dom Tallarico late in the second. Giving up just the one 3rd period goal, Tallarico stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced. “Sometimes you make a change like that and it gives you a kick and gets them back on track,” said Wrazin. “And that’s what we were looking for.” Matthew Terrance scored twice for Will-North. SMALL SCHOOL A sparkling 17-save performance by goalie Max Battistoni helped the Flames make history as they became the first team to repeat as Small School champions. As solid as Battistoni was, he was aided by strong play from defensive stalwarts Casey Charlton and Nick Vermilye who physically manhandled the Bulldogs. They cleared the lane so Battistoni could have a clear view of every shot he faced. “They were relentless on the back end,” said Will East coach Mike Torrillo. Matt Steffan (MVP) and Alex Finley scored for the Flames, who have now played in the title game five years in a row, also winning in the 2010-11 season. Steffan sealed the win when he beat Ken-East goalie Bradley Hermann at the 5:18 mark of the first period. This was also the fifth time in six years the Flames and Bulldogs met in the championship game. “I think tonight you had the three biggest rivalries in the whole Fed,” said Ken East coach Kyle Pray. With just four seniors, the young Bulldogs squad is sure to be back in the mix next season. “We’ve been here the last five years so I don’t think we were as nervous as they were,” said Matt Steffan. “They’re a very good team. Very young, very talented. I think we were just on a mission. No team has ever won back-to-back (small school) championships until right now. It feels great. I think we graduated 12 seniors and they were all texting me before the game. We were able to win again, for them.”

Sabres’ Pat Kaleta a Lego® Master By Bob Koshinski
uffalo right winger Pat Kaleta is a tough guy who leaves it all out there when he is on the ice for the Sabres. Born in Angola, New York, Kaleta has had an up and down career filled with injuries and suspensions, but he continues to be an interesting fan favorite. When he is off the ice, to relax, Kaleta often spends time on his hobby which is collecting and building Lego® sculptures. “I’m the type of person where I get going with something and then run with it,” says Kaleta. “I’ve been called a collector, I’ve been called a hoarder, by my mom actually,” Pat says with a laugh. Kaleta has an entire room dedicated to his collection at home. It features everything from a Lego® version of the London Bridge to what he calls his greatest accomplishment - the Taj Mahal. It all started after Pat noticed it was also the pastime for famous soccer star David Beckham in 2010. “Beckham did a Lego® set during the World Cup I believe, so I said if he can do it, I can do it,” Kaleta boasted. Now, having amassed just about every available Lego® sculpture on the market, Kaleta has added McFarlane figurine statues to his hobby. Pat’s “hobby” room is filled with Marvel® characters like Thor, Silver Surfer, Captain America, Spider-Man, Nightcrawler, and many more.
This rough and tough NHL player sees nothing wrong with his hobby of collecting what some may feel are children’s toys. “It’s okay to be different,” says Kaleta. “I play in the NHL and do Legos® that five-year olds do, but that’s what I love to do. Whatever other people think, I really don’t care.” Kaleta is also best friends with another well-known Buffalo sports figure, Fred Jackson. The two met several years ago when they lived in the same apartment complex, and have been pals ever since. “Pat is a great guy,” said Jackson. “My kids love him and they love visiting his house to see all his Legos®,” added Fred, who is also a fan of Marvel® superheroes, especially the Hulk. When asked if he allows Jackson’s kids to play with his Legos®, Kaleta said “I have a bunch they can build with, but they know they can’t touch the sculptures on the shelf.” “I always touch his buildings just to make him nervous,” chimed in Jackson, with a chuckle. Pat Kaleta is a local player who is living his dream of playing for his hometown team. If he wants to visit other places, he just walks into his “collection” room and he’s quickly off into space with his Lego® Star Wars Death Star or to India with his intricately built Taj Mahal.

Sabres’ Love Affair with Chef’s By Bob Koshinski
uffalo’s professional athletes historically frequent certain iconic restaurants over others. For example, many of the Buffalo Bills can be found at Ilio DiPaolo’s restaurant in Blasdell immediately following their home games. For the Buffalo Sabres, however, Chef’s Restaurant has always been the go-to spot on game day. Chef’s Restaurant opened in 1923 and in 1941 a young Louis Billittier was hired to wash dishes by then owners Gino Silverstrini and Lee Federconi. Lou worked his way up to busboy, then waiter, and eventually earned the title of restaurant manager. In 1950, he became sole owner. The basic history of Chef’s Restaurant is a feel-good story of a local boy who made good in his hometown and then returned the favor. Lou Billittier also became a father figure to many of the young hockey players in the 1970’s who played on the town’s expansion hockey team, the Buffalo Sabres. In particular, Lou became a mentor, advisor and friend to Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin and René Robert - the French Connection. “Back then, there was always one of them in my dad’s office asking for advice or just talking to him,” Lou Billittier Jr. remembered. “A perfect example of their love of my father was when he died. The three of them were in western Canada doing some promotion when they heard he had died,” Louie John said. “René called me and said, ‘You are not burying your father until we get back there.’ I said, ‘Yeah, okay,’ and went on with our plans. They immediately left western Canada and took two planes into Toronto where they rented a car so they could make it to the wake on time. That was impressive.” The relationship between Lou Sr. and the three Sabres stars was so important that Lou Jr. created “The French Connection Room” in 2010 at the suggestion of René Robert. “René looked at this room and said, ‘For all the time we spent in the restaurant with you and your father, you should name this room after the French Connection,’ ” said Billittier. “I liked the idea and I had a lot of memorabilia from when they played so I put most of it on the walls,” Louie Jr. said. “A lot of the pictures are ones people have never seen before. This is more than a tribute to these guys for all the years they spent here.” Lou’s most memorable item in the room is a large photo of the French Connection dressed in tuxedos from when Perreault was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The French Connection presented it to Lou’s dad during an Alumni game in 2000. “It was four months before my dad died, and he was very sick, but he wanted to be there with those guys. My father really loved that experience,” Louie John explained. Another memorable photo at Chef’s Restaurant was one with Louie John, his sister and his dad with the French Connection in their hockey uniforms in 1997. “It was 1997 and we were rolling out our brand of bottled sauce, so we used the Connection in our Chef’s Restaurant television commercials. Those were some fun times for all of us.” “After the commercial had run for

several years, Rico and his wife come into Chef’s Restaurant for dinner,” Louie John said. “Rico comes up to me and says, ‘Some women and men came up to me in the Boulevard Mall and say ‘I know you - you are the guys from the Chef’s Restaurant commercials who sing.’ ” Rico replies, “No, I play hockey.” To which the man says, “No, you were on the commercial singing. You are a singer, right.” Ironically, Richard Martin died before Lou could officially dedicate “The French Connection Room.” “Rico stopped into the restaurant the day before he died and I got him to sign a French Connection jersey that I was going to use for a charity event,” Louie John said. “The next morning, I was shopping at Wegmans when Tickets (a.k.a. Danny Gare) called and broke the news of Martin’s death.” A week after he died, Louie John called Rico’s wife to ask if it was okay that they dedicated the new room at Chef’s Restaurant in honor of the French Connection. He explained that he was going to ask the Sabres new owner, Terry Pegula, to step in for Rico. She was fine with it. Louie John called the Sabres and Pegula said he would be honored to participate. “Terry was great and at the end of the ceremony I gave him the framed French Connection signed jersey and a Captains of the Aud framed autographed photo,” Louie John said. Chef’s Restaurant’s association with the Buffalo Sabres began when the Knox brothers were awarded an NHL expansion franchise in 1970. Frank Christi, the long-time trainer of the AHL’s Buffalo Bisons and then Sabres, was responsible for sending players to Chef’s. He was a friend of Lou’s and when the players started coming into town Frankie explained that they were not making much money and they needed a good meal. Lou welcomed the players, including Perreault, with open arms and he never charged them for a meal. Photos by Bob Koshinski

Louie John was a 15-year old student at St. Francis High School who worked at Chef’s Restaurant in his spare time. He and his father used to watch games that year by standing on the ice at the Zamboni entrance. “It was a great experience,” said Louie John. “I got to meet all the players.” During the second season when Martin joined the team, Louie John was in the kitchen washing dishes when Christi called in a panic. They had just fired the stick boy for the visitor’s bench and he needed one immediately because Minnesota was in town for a game that night.“He asked if I was around because he needed me on the visitor’s bench,” he explained. “I didn’t know the first thing about being a stick boy and next thing I know, I am in the dressing room with the North Stars. Early in the game Bill Goldsworthy broke a stick and I am trying to find one for him and he starts yelling at me. It was horrible.” “It was a great experience,” said Louie, who was a stick boy for seven seasons. “I worked for all of the great players—Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky.” Louie John also remembers an important moment that involved his dad and René Robert. “Another time we were standing by the door to the ice and René comes by and whacks my father on the ankle before he goes onto the ice. He scores two goals that period and he tells my Dad he was to stay there because he is going to whack his ankles before every period,” Louie explains. “After a few games, my dad says, ‘This sonofa#@%&# - I have black and blue marks all over my ankles.’ ” Now, after fifty years of being at the corner of Seneca and Chicago Streets, Louie Billittier Jr. and his sister Mary Beth continue in their dad’s shoes with the Sabres players. “It is exciting for me,” he said. “I know these players on a first-name basis. I’m very fortunate and I consider many of these players and alumni as half-brothers.”

With the Connor McDavid/Jack Eichel derby in full force, it’s time to clarify where and how the Buffalo Sabres may end up in this year’s National Hockey League draft. Assuming the Sabres finish last overall in the league, under the current NHL draft rules, the team will have the greatest chance to land the top spot for picking the 2015-2016 rookie class. An NHL Draft Lottery to actually determine the first round order for non-playoff teams is scheduled for April 15 in Toronto. For Sabres’ fans hoping the team lands either McDavid, a star with the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters, or Boston University’s Eichel, that is the key date. Under the rules that went into place last year - and remain in effect for this year - the team that finishes 30th (or last overall) in the 2014-2015 standings has the greatest chance to grab the top spot in the first round. The draft lottery odds puts a 20 percent chance for the last place team to gain the much-coveted top drafting slot. Under the old format, the last place team had a 25 percent chance. Interestingly, last year the Florida Panthers finished 28th overall, yet won the lottery. The Sabres finished in last place last season, then dropped down to the second drafting slot, and ended up taking center Sam Reinhart. Even if the Sabres finish last overall, the worst they can draft in this year’s first round is second. In all subsequent rounds, the Sabres will draft in the top spot. Next year, the NHL will introduce a new lottery plan where the teams that finish with the three worst records will have a special lottery to determine who drafts overall. Potentially, the team that finishes worst overall could end up with the fourth overall draft pick and not one of the top three slots. The chart below shows this year’s draft lottery odds.

SCOTTY BOWMAN SHOWCASE ION ADMISS IS ONLY
SUNDAY APRIL 12 th 2015 • first niagara center • THREE ALL-STAR HOCKEY GAMES The 2015 Scotty Bowman Showcase consists of three all-star hockey games between players from Buffalo, N.Y. and their rivals from Rochester, N.Y. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. with high school juniors from the two cities facing off against one another for the Tim Horton Memorial Cup. In 2014, the Buffalo juniors won the trophy with a 4-3 shootout victory. The next game will take place at 3 p.m. between high school seniors from each city. The winner of the second game will be awarded the Scotty Bowman Cup. This award and the event are named after the legendary Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history. Bowman will be in attendance to present the Bowman Cup to the victorious senior team. The Buffalo seniors won last year’s Bowman Cup, improving to 7-3 in the event’s 10-year history. The third game will feature players from Buffalo and Rochester who play prep school or junior hockey, either locally or elsewhere. The junior and senior-year high school-aged players will face off for the Rick Martin Memorial Cup at 5 p.m. All three games will consist of two 22-minute halves. Players will be individually nominated and rated by a group of area high school, midget and junior coaches from both cities based on their play this past season. For more information, or to nominate a player for consideration, please contact Sabres Youth Hockey Manager Ed Grudzinski by phone at 716-855-4174 or via email at ed.grudzinski@sabres.com. Several players have furthered their careers following their participation in the Scotty Bowman Showcase, with the most high-profile player being Phil Lane of Rochester. Lane was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft, after competing in both the 2008 and 2009 events. The final selection of each team will be completed by the Buffalo Sabres based on the ratings of the nominating committee. The participants for each game will be announced at a later date.

USA Hockey Tier 1 National Championships By James Fink
Some of the country’s top teen-aged players will be coming to town as part of a large-scale USA Hockey tournament. USA Hockey Tier I National Championships will be held from March 26 to 30 at the Northtown Center at Amherst, bringing with it the top U14, U16, and U18 teams. A total of 48 teams will be in the tournament, including teams from Amherst and the Buffalo Jr. Sabres organization. Visit Buffalo Niagara, who is presenting the tournament along with Amherst Youth Hockey, the Buffalo Sabres, and Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission, said more than 3,500 hotel room nights have been booked across the region because of the tournament and its economic impact will exceed $2.5 million.
Combined with a pair of New York state hockey championships held earlier this month, also at the Northtown Center, the economic impact from the three events will top $4.5 million, according to Visit Buffalo Niagara statistics. “Teams come in early and stay late,” said Robert Schell, Amherst Youth Hockey tournament chair. “It has a huge economic impact.” The tournament marks the ninth time since 2003 that the Northtown Center has hosted a major USA Hockey youth tournament. “It feels like a second home,” said Dave Fischer, USA Hockey spokesman. As part of the tournament, several NHL trophies from the Hockey Hall of Fame will be on display in the Northtown Center’s lobby.

www.AnytimeHockey.com New Adult Hockey Provider Lets You Play Hockey Whenever You Want Ever find yourself wanting to play hockey, but you’re not able to bring together enough friends to play in a quality game? Maybe it’s the opposite. You show up to a game along with 35 other skaters and you end up talking to Bob on the bench the entire time instead of getting the ice time you wanted. What if you are a parent of three and you want to try playing hockey for the first time, but all you can find are adult leagues that hold you to a rigid schedule week after week? If this is true, then you should check out a new adult hockey provider called Anytime Hockey. Anytime Hockey is buzzing around the adult hockey world and the best part is anyone can play. That’s right, each Anytime Hockey game has a specific skill level, so if you are a beginner / lower skill level skater, Anytime Hockey gives you the opportunity to play with players who want a slower paced game as well. On the other hand, if you’re a more skilled player looking for a faster paced game, you can sign up for the Intermediate / Upper level games. So how does it work? All you have to do is go to www.AnytimeHockey.com and find a game that fits into your schedule, at your preferred location (using the game finder), then sign up for that game, and show up and play. All Anytime Hockey games include a referee, a guarantee of two goalies, and a maximum amount of 20 skaters. This is an adult hockey player’s dream! We asked co-creators Ryan Clifford, Matt Clifford, and Brandon Merritt where the idea for Anytime Hockey came from, and this is what they had to say: “We have been playing hockey in Buffalo for a long time now along with many other of our friends and family. What we have noticed is that it is really difficult to play hockey when you want to play hockey. There was no adult hockey provider out there that would allow players to select and play in hockey games on a game-by-game basis. Really, this idea came from the love we have for the game of hockey and us wanting to provide all adults with the ability to play as much hockey as he or she wants.” Anytime Hockey now has games at the HarborCenter, Holiday Twin Rinks, Leisure Rinks, The Northtown Center and the North Buffalo Ice Rink. Cost starts at only ten dollars per game. Games are available for sign up at www.AnytimeHockey.com
