Lots to achieve in the coming year CityLife is Wodonga Council’s monthly publication and is delivered around Wodonga. Approximately 16,000 copies are printed each month by Border Mail Printing, Wodonga. CityLife is printed on recycled paper, which is made up of 20 to 40 per cent of recycled fibre from old newspapers. It can also be re-added to newsprint production as a recycled fibre after use. As a council, we’re pleased to be able work with these groups; sharing and maintaining efficient use of our community facilities for a range of activities.

I am incredibly honoured and humbled to serve as mayor of Wodonga Council for the next 12 months. After a decade as a councillor, I understand the huge commitment that is required to fill this post and am excited about all that is ahead this year. I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge my predecessor, Cr Rod Wangman. Cr Wangman’s capacity and dedicated hard work over the past two years has been monumental and on behalf of the community, I thank him for all that he achieved as mayor.

We also have a growing base of volunteers that work with the council across a range of activities and are invaluable to our city. strategic resource plan and council budget. We will move forward, and there’s plenty of hard work ahead for us all. I’m excited to see how much we can achieve in the year ahead for the benefit of our great city.

Thank you must also go to my family for their love, trust and support to be able to step up to this role.

We are now realising the projects that have been spoken about for the past decade.

I am also very fortunate to have four very experienced previous mayors who continue to sit around the council table.

This includes the rail terminal at Logic coming out of the ground and opportunity for further investment in our CBA.

I look forward to both their guidance and support over the next 12 months.

Across all parts of our city, we have been building infrastructure, with the Baranduda Preschool and Community Centre the final project in a comprehensive refurbishment plan, new and fantastic playgrounds installed at Henry Nowik Park and Rex Chamberlain Park, the final stage of the James Scott Memorial

Together with all Wodonga councillors and staff, we will continue to ensure delivery of the community projects, inter-generational infrastructure and opportunities for this city as is clearly defined in our

Skate Park completed and a new Welcome Centre, interpretative content and works completed at Bonegilla Migrant Experience. And it doesn’t end there with works under way in our CBA through the funding under the National Stronger Regions Fund, with The Promenade starting to take shape at Junction Place. Next year we are due to see works begin on the Havelock St extension, followed by the redevelopment of High and South streets and the planning and landscaping of Richardson Park. But it’s not all about the built form and hard infrastructure. Our city is what it is because of our community and its people. We are fortunate in Wodonga to have a strong network of community groups doing many great things for our city.

I look forward to meeting many more of you out in our community over the next 12 months. As a council, we have a role to play in promoting positive health outcomes for our people. We offer a range of activities, as well as sporting precincts, recreational facilities, bike paths, walking tracks and playgrounds, which ensure our people have access to options for physical activity and social connections. This will ensure our community is happy and healthy for many years to come. So I look forward to an exciting, and busy, 12 months as our council enters the final year of its term. And I wish all of you a merry Christmas and a happy holidays. Stay safe on the roads and enjoy the time with family, friends and loved ones.

WHITE RIBBON BALL More than 200 guests attended The White Ribbon Ball in Wodonga last month – raising awareness of domestic violence and much needed funds to tackle the issue. The ball, hosted by Wodonga Council, AlburyCity and the Victorian Police, promoted awareness of the scourge of domestic violence in the community and raised more than $25,000. The vital funds will be used to combat the issue in the local community. Businesses rallied behind the White Ribbon Ball a bid to end violence against women.

Bonegilla Migrant Experience upgrade unveiled A new Welcome Centre is part of a major redevelopment officially opened at the Bonegilla Migrant Experience recently. Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie joined Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie in opening the $760,000 project in November. The project also included landscaping, signage, restoration of the Recreation Hut and two public artworks.

Caravan Industry Association Victoria and Telstra were major sponsors of the charity event, with Joss Group, Hume Bank and Gloss and Bean supporting sponsors.

Cr Speedie said the redevelopment has made the Bonegilla Migrant Experience more visitor-friendly and will help preserve an important part of Australian history for future generations.

New exhibition materials have been installed in the Recreation Hut and throughout the Bonegilla Migrant Experience to better tell the stories of those individuals and families who stayed at the site.

residents of the site and their families.

Victoria Cross recipient Mark Donaldson used the keynote address at the ball to ask everyone in the community to be a role model on how women are treated.

The event also coincided with the launch of the revamped Bonegilla Migrant Experience website, found at bonegilla.org.au, and a new Facebook page.

He also revealed that his mother’s disappearance, presumed murder, put him on a rough path that eventually led to the army.

SENTINEL CHICKENS AT TRANSFER STATION With the start of the mosquito monitoring season, 20 sentinel chickens have moved into in a new purpose-built coop at the Waste Transfer Station. These chickens are part of the Victorian Arbovirus Disease Control Program run by the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Economic, Jobs, Transport ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

and Resources, Bioscience Division. The chickens provide a warning mechanism for mosquito transmitted diseases and are tested weekly for diseases that may be a threat. Wodonga Council is hosting the chickens, trapping adult mosquitoes and monitoring larvae sites.

Data has been collected over 25 years and will continue to be collected to identify trends and possible treatments if the control of mosquito-borne disease in our community is needed.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest global maleled movement to stop violence against women. It engages and enables men and boys to lead this social change. The ball – featuring a black and white theme - was held at The Cube Wodonga.

Eggs will be donated to a local charity and the flock will be donated to a local school’s education program at the end of the season in April. CITYLIFE

A barking dog in my neighbourhood is driving me crazy, what can I do?

Please notify your neighbour that their dog is barking. Sometimes the owner is unaware that their dog is causing a disturbance. If the dog continues barking, contact Wodonga Council and council staff will ask the owner to do something about the situation. You must then complete a log sheet (supplied by the council) of the dates and times the dog is barking and return it to the council. If the council cannot resolve the problem with the owner, the matter can be referred to court for a decision. Phone (02) 6022 9300 for more information.

Street trees and nature strips are the property of the community. Wodonga Council is responsible for enforcing nature strip requirements in the case of hazardous or unsuitable installations, but maintenance of the nature strip is the householders’ responsibility. In some cases property developers may be authorised to install suitable nature strip landscaping at their cost to an approved plan, but the council will not maintain the verge once transferred to the council.

What can I do with my pets during New Year’s Eve?

While you’re enjoying the festive season, it’s important to have a plan for your pets. Check gates, doors and fences and ensure that they are secure, provide plenty of food and water. Where possible, animals should be left inside with blinds and curtains closed and music or the television playing to lessen the impact of sudden noises. All pets should be microchipped and registered and owners should check registry details are up-to-date.

It sure is. If you run out of liners, additional rolls of the suitable lime green kitchen caddy bin liners can be collected from the council offices in Hovell St. If you need a quick fix, consider lining your kitchen caddy with newspaper or drop them straight into the green bin. A new roll of compostable bin liners will be delivered to your home every 12 months.

It is with the challenges and opportunities this population growth presents in mind that Wodonga Council has developed this draft growth strategy to create a vision for the city’s future.

The community is encouraged to have its say on the documents, which set out to enhance the existing liveability and prosperity of the city as it grows and changes. Wodonga Council will be holding information sessions around the city and is keen to receive your feedback about the draft strategy.

7 TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER BARBECUE

Wodonga Carols by Candlelight 2015 The Wodonga Carols by Candlelight will mark 40 years this month with the concert to be streamed live for the first time online. Organised by Wodonga Brass, the event will be held on Sunday, December 20 with 21 singers leading the program of 25 carols. They will be supported by a combined 70-voice choir from Sing Australia, New Life Chapel and local primary schools, and the 40-piece Wodonga Brass band. Six performers will take to the carols stage for the first time.

TIP ONE: CUT DOWN ON THE FAT

TIP FOUR: SWAP THE SEASONING

The carols already attract a much wider audience than those who attend the event by being broadcast on 1494 2AY radio.

Try minute steaks, lean meat kebabs or skinless chicken burgers, or remove any visible fat from meals before cooking. Ask your butcher for reduced-fat and reduced salt options.

Use herbs and spices to flavour meats instead of salt, and also try to use salt-reduced sauces and dressings.

Organiser Lindsay Hanchett said live streaming on the website, Brassbanned.com, will provide the event with a “whole new dimension”.

TIP TWO: CHOOSE HEALTHIER OILS Use healthier plant cooking oils such as canola or olive oil and limit your use or use a spray oil to manage quantity.

TIP THREE: ADD FRUIT AND VEGETABLES Always serve salad items such a sliced tomatoes and lettuce with bread options. Add grated vegetables to lean meat paddies, or add sliced watermelon or fruit kebabs as a side option - a little can go a long way.

TIP FIVE: PROVIDE WATER Water is the healthiest drink for people of all ages and it’s the best to quench thirst.

TIP SIX: PROVIDE BETTER BREAD Use wholegrain breads, rolls, pitabread, English muffins instead of plain white variations.

TIP SEVEN: MAKE HEALTHY EATING EASY People generally enjoy eating tasty healthy foods, support healthy eating by making the healthier options the only options.

The carols will return to Willow Park in Pearce Street after re-seeding forced the event to move to Birallee Sports Ground last year. It will be held from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, with pre-carols entertainment and food available from 6pm. Proceeds from the sale of candles will go towards Albury Wodonga Regional Health and has raised more than $35,000 in the past 10 years.

Wodonga New Year’s Eve Family Fireworks Spectacular Finish 2015 with a bang at the Wodonga Family Spectacular on New Year’s Eve. Wodonga Raiders Football Club will host the free, all-ages event at Birallee Park for the fifth year running, with support from Wodonga Council. Gates open at 5pm with patrons encouraged to bring chairs, rugs and sun shelters and enjoy the entertainment provided by Bowen’s Entertainment. There will be rides including the Cha, Cha, dodgem cars, tea cups, giant slide, jumping castles, train and various carnival games. Food and alcohol will be available on the night, with no BYO alcohol allowed. Fireworks will fill the skies between 9pm and 10pm. The council also reminds pet owners to be aware of their pets’ needs on the night and over the festive season. “While you are celebrating, make sure you have a plan for your pets,” Team Leader Compliance Craig McClanahan said. “Animals should have a tag with a phone number on it so if your pet does escape, they can be returned promptly and safely. “We prefer to return pets immediately than to have to put them in the pound.” Pet tags can be bought from council or you can provide your own.

Wig library Rose garden returns home anniversary The Brave Hearts Wig Library has returned home to the Murray Valley Private Hospital where it started its journey some 10 years ago. The library provides modern, fashionable wigs for hire at an affordable price, to any woman who has been diagnosed with cancer in the region. It will now be more easily accessible to more women with Brave Hearts securing a room, kindly donated by the Murray Valley Private Hospital in Wodonga. Brave Hearts president, Jenny Black, said it was vitally important that the library was as accessible as possible for women in the region. “It is difficult enough for those going through cancer treatment and if we can help in a positive and affordable way to help bolster their self-esteem during this time, we will be thrilled,” she said.

“This is the main reason that Brave Hearts was formed in the first place and we are so fortunate to be able to revitalise this service for the women in our region.”

Brave Hearts is calling for more volunteers to help staff the library and to bolster the small band of volunteers already available. Anyone interested in helping can contact Ms Laundess email contact@ braveheartsonthemurray. com.au FOR MORE INFORMATION braveheartsonthemurray.com.au

UnitingCare Christmas appeal Wodonga residents are being urged to turn one dollar into $1 million for emergency relief this Christmas. As well as donating gifts, the UnitingCare and Target Christmas Gift Appeal is asking shoppers this year to purchase a bauble gift tag for $1. It is hoped $1 million can raised to assist families who struggle to celebrate Christmas, with last year supporting over 42,000 Australian families. “Fortunately we have so many generous locals and we are relying on them to dig deep, show compassion and support our appeal at Target Wodonga. We’re committed to making sure all gifts go to local families.”

ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

“This year has been a really tough year in our community. We have seen people finding it hard to make ends meet and thankfully through this appeal we can help give them some relief,” local UnitingCare co-ordinator Susan Cheetham said. Cr Michael Fraser launched the appeal in Wodonga. “UnitingCare and other agencies continue to be overloaded with requests for relief services, and this demand always spikes around Christmas time,” he said. “The local volunteers do a wonderful job in keeping up with this demand.” The appeal will run in all Target stores through until Christmas Eve, December 24.

DO YOU USE BPAY VIEW? Wodonga Council is able to issue rate notices via BPay View directly to your personal internet banking portal. Register through your internet banking site. Financially supported by Brave Hearts on the Murray and run by volunteers, the library is open from 10am to 2pm each Tuesday and Thursday. Appointments can be made by ringing the Brave Hearts Wig Coordinator, Di Laundess on 0421 173 545.

IN BRIEF

RATES NOTICES EMAILED

The five-year anniversary of Wodonga’s Celebrations Rose Garden was celebrated last month.

Cr Anna Speedie backed the project when it was first established and attended the anniversary celebrations.

The garden at Belvoir Park opened on November 14, 2010 to commemorate those who have lost their battle to breast cancer and celebrate the lives of those who have survived.

“It’s been great to have somewhere special where people can come and reflect, remember and be inspired at any time of the year,” she said.

It was established by cancer support group Brave Hearts on the Murray, with support from Wodonga Council, and consists of Jane McGrath, Pink Seduction and Iceberg Roses surrounding a 2.5 metre bronze sculpture of a woman reaching to the sky.

“The council has worked and will continue to work with Brave Hearts on the Murray to maintain the garden and ensure it is still available for local residents to enjoy for many years to come.” Brave Hearts on the Murray President Jenny Black thanked the council for its ongoing support.

Freemasons support the community Have you ever bought a barbecue sausage, or a soft drink from the Freemasons outside Woolworths in Wodonga on a Friday, or occasionally outside Bunnings and wondered where the money goes? Here is the answer. Each year at their October meeting Lodge Belvoir distributes the funds raised to various local organisations and individuals. The recipients this year included Belvoir Special School, Uniting Care, Salvation Army, Scout Groups and 10 student bursaries

across schools in the Wodonga area.

The facility is available for the council to issue rate notices as a pdf document to the nominated email address provided by any ratepayer. If you wish to use this method and not have your notice posted, please contact the customer focus team on (02) 6022 9300 to provide the email address. About 90 non-Freemasons from the local community attended the last meeting. The lodge retains nothing for its own purposes. About $9000 was distributed this year and there will hopefully be more next year. This year, as in the past, the community and Freemasons in the North East have enjoyed the support of the broader organisation of Freemasonry in Victoria, which has now existed for just over 125 years and over 300 years globally.

BUSHFIRE PLANNING

Planning scheme gets a refresh Wodonga Council is in the process of updating its planning scheme to make it simpler and easier to read.

Being fire ready will ensure you and your family will be able to act responsibly under the pressure of bushfires this summer.

The council recently reviewed its planning scheme as required by Section 12B of the Planning and Environment Act 1987. It is now undertaking a rewrite of the local content of the scheme, known as the Local Planning Policy Framework, to implement the findings of the review. It aims to streamline, simplify and update the local content and ensure it aligns with the structure of contemporary planning schemes. The rewrite will also implement widelyconsulted strategies adopted by the council, such as the Wodonga Integrated Transport Strategy and the Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Plan. The new draft Local Planning Policy Framework will go on public exhibition as part of a planning scheme amendment from February 2016. Further information is available by contacting our office on (02) 6022 9300.

Your fire plan should already be in place – if not discuss it with your household today.

LENEVA BARANDUDA URBAN AREA Draft structure plans for the Leneva-Baranduda growth corridor will soon be released for public comment. The Metropolitan Planning Authority and Wodonga Council, are in the process of refining the draft Future Urban Structure and has progressed in the preparation of the Precinct Structure Plan. Informal consultations with affected stakeholders will be held before the documents are placed on public exhibition for comment early next year.

Draft Wodonga Growth Strategy now out The Draft Wodonga Growth Strategy is now open for public comment. Wodonga Council has developed this draft growth strategy to create a vision for the city’s future. As one of the fastest growing regional cities in Victoria, Wodonga is expected to double its population within 25 years – presenting not only challenges but also opportunities. The community is encouraged to have its say on the document, which sets out to enhance the existing liveability and prosperity of the city as it grows and

changes. Copies are available at the library, community centres, customer focus centre or on the council website.

Pack important documents, photos, medications, money and clothes so you can leave easily before a fire starts.

You can provide your feedback by: • Going to our website at makewodongayours.com. au; • Contacting the council on (02) 6022 9300; • Emailing info@wodonga. vic.gov.au; or, • Writing a letter to the Strategic Planning Team, Wodonga Council, PO Box 923, Wodonga, Victoria 3689.

Prevention is everyone’s responsibility. If you see smoke or fire, phone Triple 000 immediately. If you see something suspicious, phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Please have your say before Thursday, December 17 at 5pm.

Wodonga’s Youth Leadership Program graduates were recently inspired by Paul de Gelder, a motivational speaker who lost two limbs in a shark attack. Nine Leadership Program participants aged 18 to 25 graduated in the council’s seventh year of running the program. Participant Mark said the program taught him to “back yourself, follow your passion and don’t let the curves in the river stop you from doing whatever you want to”. Brooke said it showed her: “Nothing is

Let Fire Danger Ratings guide you on when to leave – they tell you how dangerous a fire would be if one started. As the ratings increase, so does your risk of fire.

impossible. If you truly want to do something, you can, if you want it bad enough.” Another graduate, Caitlyn, said she would take every opportunity that presented itself and now understand that everyone has their own struggle or story. Applications will open for next year’s program in March. To stay up-to-date follow Wodonga Youth on Facebook at facebook. com/wodongayouth MORE INFORMATION wodonga.vic.gov.au/ylp

THIS SUMMER, STAY HEALTHY IN THE HEAT With heatwaves becoming a regular feature of the Victorian summer, it’s important to plan ahead and consider how you can look after yourself and others. If you know extreme heat is on the way think about how you can keep your house cool, places you could go to escape the heat, friends, family or neighbours who might be especially vulnerable and how you could look out for them. Heat-related illness can affect anybody, including the young and healthy, however the elderly or frail, pregnant women, babies and young children and people with a disability are more at risk. WHAT’S ON IN 2016

SUMMER 2015-2016

The Cube Wodonga The Cube Wodonga is thrilled to be offering a season program full of some recognisable faces, cultural and contemporary dance, indigenous music, family shows based on favourite books and breathtaking circus. Country Song in May is a fictionalised story inspired by the life of Jimmy Little. James Oswald “Jimmy” Little AO was an Australian Aboriginal musician, actor and teacher from the Yorta Yorta people. Queensland Theatre Company brings together a talented cast of six actor/musicians weaving the story and songs of Little to life. The 2016 season sees the first collaboration with the nationally recognised Flying Fruit Fly Circus with Junk. This partnership with the ‘fruities’ will result in them premiering a new work every two years at The Cube Wodonga, before they tour to Sydney Opera House. Junk will take audiences on a journey back in time, before children had access to televisions, computers and expensive toys, when the neighbourhood street

was a playground full of adventure and makebelieve. On the circus theme, The Cube Wodonga also has Gravity Dolls, winners of the New Circus Award at the 2014 Melbourne Fringe Festival, with their show My Life in Boxes. And yes, it’s back, the popular, quirky and oh so fringe A Little Bit of Shhh with Out of the Box (cubes and boxes hmmm). Seeing artists swinging on trapeze over your head one minute while others tumble and fly through the air, or seemingly glide up and down on ropes, will be sure to give you goose bumps! Rod Quantock will be a familiar name (and bearded face) to many of you. Quantock will be gracing the stage for a night of absurdity, climate change and contemporary politics in September in his show

Boredom Protection Policy. Films are back in 2016, however this time they will take you on three separate journeys filled with hope, inspiration, faith and motivation with Movies that Matter. The Cube Wodonga continues to support PROJECTion Dance and Murray Conservatorium with two performances each. The work that these two artistic communitybased companies produce is of world-class standard. Of course other shows will round out the season, so make sure you study the program and become a member of The Cube Wodonga to receive all of the benefits. Enjoy!
