December

Friday, May 5, 7pm

December shows us the strength of the human spirit and ability to find hope amid crisis. Joy can shine through even the toughest devastation. Working on a grand scale, Jake uses his acrobatic movement to inform the creation of a series of large-scale drawings and paintings that bring this narrative into clear focus. Balancing between abstraction, and literal, this physical theatre work is an example of the cutting edge of Australian contemporary circus.

David Walliams’ award-winning book comes to life on stage! "Mr Stink stank. He also stunk. And if it was correct English to say he stinked, then he stinked as well …”

It all starts when Chloe, just about the loneliest girl in the world, makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp. Sure, he smells a bit, but he’s the only person who’s ever been nice to her. So, when Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed.

Now Chloe's got to make sure no one finds out her secret, but she’s about to learn that some secrets have a way of leading to disaster. And speaking of secrets, there just might be more to Mr Stink than meets the eye … or the nose … The team behind The Midnight Gang and The 13-, 26-, 52-, 78- and 91-Storey Treehouses return with this touching, twisted and hilarious, and very smelly tale. Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above the ground. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a mesmerising negotiation of cause and effect.

Circus necessarily develops high levels of trust and communication within ensembles. By a Thread was created to bring a new dimension to these acrobatic relationships, and the parallels they draw to our everyday interactions. Virtuosic acrobatics and intricate choreography weave through moments of confusion, hilarity, romance, playfulness, fear and friendship.

An intricate and mesmerising piece of art.

Of The Land On Which We Meet

Thursday, October 26, 7.30pm

We are not the first – nor will we be the last – to walk on this land. When walking on stones and cement it can be hard to remember what it feels like to have earth beneath our feet. What does it mean to be where we are?

By opening up the acknowledgement of country and taking a closer look within it, we search for a way to address the possible lack of connection contemporary Australians have with the spirituality of the land.

We follow the journey of three contemporary Australian circus artists with distinct relationships with country - an indigenous Australian, a descendant of migrants, and a descendant of colonial settlers.

Of the Land on Which We Meet hopes to rediscover a connection we once had on-country with 60,000 years of history, spirit and story.

Created by Isabelle Champagne-Chittick, Margot Mansfield and Harley Mann. Conceived and directed by Harley Mann. This work was first commissioned by Melbourne Fringe as a part of the Deadly Fringe program and generously supported by the City of Melbourne, Creative Victoria and the Australia Council for the Arts.
