art house. 500+1 Berlin Beyond the Wall

011

The idea of the project is an effect of the research about Berlin, The Berlin Wall and a role of artistic comunity in the history of the city. 500+1 is not only a building, but rather a manifesto, based on the symbolism and squat culture.

symbol of fighting against regim, give users a feeling of being in the forest. Those elements also lead users to the main staircase which is the entrance to the building. Here emergency staircases and elevators were also organised.

While designing a building I wanted it to be like pure canvas, which would eventualy change together with its residents. Because of that I decided to create a base, which would give residents a possibility of realising and transforming different scenarios. Building itself is organised on the 3x3m module, which allowed me to create a flexible space, divided into three main functional areas.

Second functional area, localised at the level +6m is the openspace, services area, which contains gallery, cafeteria, workshops and indoor market, with specially designed furniture. At this level users have a perfect view at the surroundings, through glass facades, which – together with skylights – provide a needed amount of daylight.

First of it is a green space - a meadow - which became a path to the building. Main reason why I decided to create it was the fact, that I wanted to save as much of the trees and green spaces as possible, creating at the same time a perfect space for meetings or events. Moreover, because of the close location of the city railway station, bars and restaurants, by freeing the ground floor, new walking and cycling paths has been created. The only architectural element here are white pillars, that support the construction and, together whith designed birch grove, which is a

Last and third functional space is designed for residents only, localised above the ground, in order to secure private community space and avoid traffic noise. However it is not a typical living area, because there are no regular apartments. Instead of that users can use 3x3m modules - each with an access to the bathroom - where one module is provided for one person and can be organised in unlimited variations. What is more every single living module has access to small indoor patio, which provides daylight. Spaces such as kitchen, living room, etc. have been designed as common spaces, through which users have to walk

012

whenever, they go to their module. Another non-typical thing about this space is the fact that each module has four frames/ doors that allow people to access it – together 500 doors in the building. The inspiration was the strong squat culture that occurs in Berlin, which is based on creating a community. In 500+1 we have the same situaton – user can have his/hers own space, which within seconds can be extended by connecting modules together. What is more, each module can be occupied for 1 day, week, month or year – it only depends on the needs of the users. Doors have also another nature – they symbolise the Berlin Wall, but instead of dividing people, they allow them to connect with each other, to connect through art and space. 500+1 indeed should be seen as a base for residents, a place where anything can be created and transformed according to their needs, letting people decide how they want to live, without any interruption.

level 0 - the open air meadow, extended for recreational greenery Because of lifting the main part of the building, above the level of the ground, it was possible to create a

meadow, opened to the public, which perfectly fits in the Berlins green system. Meadow is also connected to the birch-tree shrubbery. Construction pillars, together with existing greenery create a kind of city park/ forest, designed for all of the inhabitants.

The only architectural element of the shape of the stem clearly marks the entrance area. What is more, the oppening of the ground floor allowed to open new walking and biking paths, as well as released perspectives, important in the city structure.

section, all of the zones infiltrate each other. What is more, in order to provide the best views, at the city, and needed amount of daylight, all of the technical rooms, such as toilets, kitchen or communication, has been located in the centre of the floor.

Presented variant pictures the complete spatial fulfillment, taking into account flats, common kitchen modules, individual bathroom modules, common spaces, workshops and patios - both open air and winter gardens. Because of the special system of

glass and light partitions walls, the whole space can be easily transformed. According to the squat culture, highly developed in Berlin, residents are the ones who are responsible for how the space should look like and function.

light voids the light scenarios

029

Light Voids is the project, which became the effect of an observation and an idea. At the beginning there was a problem – how to use empty voids, existing between buildings? What to do, to make them an attractive place in the city? How to work, to make them function locally, for small societies, but globally as well, to create the movement around the city, to provoke people to explore unknown parts of it for better space understanding? How to develop usage of such huge amount of empty, unused spaces, which often become a landfill, dark and forgotten space, that generates pathologies? So in short - how to heal a dead slots of the city? After a thorough analysis of the various places, the time has come to understand the emotions, which are being evoked in the current state of all the cracks. Overwhelm, depression or even fear – this feelings were not foreign to me, during the site visit. On the other hand, each of these spaces had something special and mysterious about them, which didn not allow me to forget about them. At all of it, I was intrigued by the fact, that no one seemed to be oblivious to these places, passing next to them at their way to work or an appointment, without even noticing the potential that was hidden in those voids.

From the very beginning I knew that the basic element, which will bring this dead cracks to life was a sunlight. The only problem that I still had was hot to work on them, because each of the voids has been different, unusual. That is the reason why I have designed the special selection table, with a code contained in it, which allows the user to create a great light scenario for each location, for it own needs. The table has been divided into four sections – DIMENSION, which is the best height, that fits to a specified gap; CHARACTER, which allows to create needed atmosphere in the interior; LEVEL, which talks about different kind of interior spaces – divided, semi-closed and opened; SIZE, which is a quantity, that needs to be developed. But to accomplish scenario I needed spatial element, which could easily organize whole space. That is why I designed a special, repetitive, glass pillar, which thanks to a chemical filling can beam with a natural light, without any artificial, electrical energy usage. Thanks to light pillar I could have easily develop the biggest from the voids that I found, which is located between two separated buildings, from an old and nowadays abandoned hospital complex, next to Podwale Street.

030

In this way, six –leveled light pavilion has been designed, which concentrates cultural functions, such as open scene, open art gallery, private and exhibition zones, multifunctional hall or an audience house. Because of different pillars placement I was allowed to create various zones – intimate and common, which emotional understanding has been provided by different light intensity. The pavilion is supposed to be a kind of a model, showing how to create a specific scenario, which could become an answer for spatial need for all the voids. Moreover thanks to the form it does not dominate in the context – with its transparent, light pillars, transparent floors it becomes rather an ethereal object, lighting point that attracts users. It becomes one of the light voids, which is a medicine for dead gaps of the city.

expo 2015 polish pavilion

041

The image of Poland - a modern country, thriving and appreciated in many fields in the international arena, and at the same time domestic with a strong tradition, made a unified vision of Expo pavilion, expressed by a terse geasture in the space. The starting point for the pavilion idea become a distinctive feature of Poland and Poles, which captivated visitors in our country. This feature is polish hospitality, which symbolically depicts the sumptuous table. The table, because it is an importnant motive, present throughout the years in polish culture. Table is a place where Poles always celebrate the most important moments of their lives, where they meet their friends, host their guests, straighten family bonds and start new periods of their lives. However the table has never been a reflection of financial status of the family - even when people where poor, they wanted to give whatever they had to their friends and family. So the table - its form and idea reflects in the concept of the pavilion, which has been shown in two ways - one straightforeward as a physical table, full of food, and second - mataphorical - as the shape of the building.

Consumerism is a disease of contemporary society. From each side people are being bombarded with advertising slogans, that force them to buy new products. Make them constantly want more and more. Factories destruct the environment, irrevocably degrading occupied territories. People are being exploited for slave labor, while the consumer stays oblivious. S/He falls into this spiral, a trap with no way out, not being aware, that in this way the balance is disturbed and sustainability is not possible. Our cure is the Transmass. It is not just an ordinary pavilion, but multidimensional idea. Lets imagine an object – neon color, streamlined shape. It becomes an icon, a place where each of the festival participants wants to spend their free time, having fun with friends. It’s at the same time easily available, because it’s been placed in the center of the festival. But it conceals a mystery. We step into its interior, being drawn to the inside of the symbolic spiral, made only by using just one, simple wall. In this way a user becomes the involuntary actor, the exhibition - kind of the performance and architecture – the scenography.

054

stage 1 We are in the first, open-air part of the pavilion. gradually fading light clams us emotionally down.

stage 2 We are being overwhelmed by commercial slogans. The same that we see daily.

stage 3 We realize, that we are being constantly brain washed. Consumerism propaganda is everywhere. 055

stage 4 We change into product victims. We want more, we need it. Amok embraces us.

stage 5 We realize the real origins of the products and effects caused by their production. Environment degradation, slavery, destrtion.

stage 6 Our emotions are being accumulated – we face our reflection. We pass through the inside transformation. But, will we decide to change anything? 056

At the beginning pavilion leads us through the open space, constantly conducting into the center of the spiral. After a while user realizes that sunlight dims, and he itself is being dragged into the interior. Then he sees slogans at the wall, which of he is an everyday suspect, that in a subliminal way encourages him to

buy new products, involving in a consumerism amok. Then images appear – they have to consolidate whole experience. And that’s how the performance begins – the fact that he’s not able to break free and out of pure curiosity he wants to know where it all leads to.

057

After a while he perceives that with every step walls are getting closer to him, and the ceiling will be soon within the reach. He is being bombarded with new slogans, that present the hypocrisy of the consumerism – on the one hand they say:”You need this! Don’t bother!”, on the other they show slavery in

orientation

enormous factories, where even children are forced to work. However, the spiral draws him further and deeper. Space inexorably declines. The emotions are being accumulated. The darkness comes. But just behind a curve he sees a delicate glow of light.

And here he faces the end of the emotional path, because he finds out what was the mystery. Figuratively a man is trapped with no way out. In front of him stands‌. A mirror. He looks at the reflection and in the exact same moment he realizes that HE itself is a part of consumerist race.

Thus the TRANSMASS worked at every dimension. Its particle has been seeded in his mind and the whole transformational machine, that was supposed to affect human mass started to work. The question is whether this man is encouraged enough to change something in himself?

alter experience

061

Nowadays cities develop rapidly , although buildings that constitute them, remain static. Moreover, because of the surface restrictions, we are forced to dense infrastructure, which is possible only in one dimension. The idea of the ALTER-EXPERIENCE is to break this barrier and give its users unforgettable experiences. ALTER-EXPERIENCE is an idea, which creates one mega-structure. The first element so called mother-building, seemingly looks like an ordinary skyscraper. The whole solid has been formed in a way to create an object with an irregular, fully transparent structure, that allow users to take a look inside, which encourages people to spend time in it. It contains four main parts – representative foyer, reception, toilets, anteroom and staircases. Next thirteen storeys has been reserved for hotel rooms with different character. Penultimate floor has been transformed into glazed restaurant area, which offers extraordinary panoramic view of the old town. . The building has been topped with a kitchen-warehouse part, which became a buffer. In the core of the building massive elevator has been placed. Thus we came to the second element comprising ALTER-EXPERIENCE, which translates to a general dynamism and variability of

the whole structure. Each room has been designed as an independent box, giving such a desired thing privacy. Founded on a square plan, with monolithic structural element - the main sanitary core connected to the ceilings - allowed us to gain clarity and division of the space. With its individually designed furnishings it was possible to obtain a uniform and consistent space, in several variants for family, couple, friends or even for business meetings. Moreover, in order to give the best space experiences, the box from each side has been glazed. However, the biggest advantage is the fact that each room does not have to remain stable. The main elevator allows to transport boxes from the main location, providing unforgettable experience. Because the building itself is constantly changing, we have an impression, that we are dealing with a “living structure”, which users form themselves.

experience something unattainable until this time – absolute freedom. Boxes leaving the mother-building are inviting them for an amazing journey over the city. It gives ease and allows to explore the city from an unknown perspective. Moreover, comfortable stopping places do not limit users and allow them to use those part of the city, that best suit their needs. The hotel thus become not only a place of temporary residence, but a guide as well. ALTER-EXPERIENCE is a completely new dimension. Constantly unpredictable, ever-changing and essentially unlimited. It gives users freedom, focuses on emotions and perception. ALTER-EXPERIENCE is not a building anymore – it is an innovation experience. Innovation of tomorrow, attainable today.

We have noticed, that cities are constantly growing vertically, but it does not affect the infrastructure in any way. Therefore the third element of the ALTER-EXPERIENCE is a specially designed structure, overhanging the city in a form of the ring. Thanks to this infrastructure, extended for stopping points in strategic places, users are allowed to

Level of experience was supposed to be designed only as a kindergarten. But in fact it is an absolutely new way of understanding how kindergarten should look like. Of course it is still a kindergarten, but thanks to contener architecture opportunities, there was a chance to arrange a space and make it multifunctional. So the open-spaced kindergarten has been created, which also, after usual houres of kindergarten opening, transforms into the new cultural centre of the city of Wroclaw. Level of experience has to become a new meeting place, which allows everyone to develop themselves, no matter how old they are. To the multifloor, transparent building, leads us a strong, colorful gate, placed in the gap between old and devastated tenement houses, becoming an invitation to the new experiences, provided by everything what building includes.

the concept of ribbon hall

085

Movement. Everything around us is the movement, including even the sunlight, which determines human lives. In opposition stands an architecture, which is not able to follow the light, becoming the barrier between people and things which are natural, primary and also really important in the human existence. So here comes the concept of Ribbon Hall - simple but multifunctional structure, creating an open space, conventionally divided into two lanes with central row of pillars, situated in Copenhagen. Whole gives a possibility which were not known in architecture until this time. The project is based on the simple module made out of three slight pillars, supporting fabric stripe, obtained from natural materials, which after multiple repetition creates the whole block. Each stripe is covered with photovoltaic layer, which allows to obtain energy from sunlight, to use it after storage to backlight Ribbon Hall at night. However action scheme is very simple - offset by a man any of the pillars from each module results with stretching or loosing material and thus creates gap in the gap in the roof. All this means that each individual becomes the architect of light, which allows them to create unusual and highly emotional space.

087

088

balanced structure structure has fully closed roof. Whole space - both interior and exterior - are rhytmic which increases harmony. Sunlight is just a subtle fulfillment, gently infiltrating through the material. It allows to create a muted, calm environment. This type of space is a perfect place for people who need to take a rest and even temporarily cut off from the bustle of the outside world.

089

regular structure regularly set pillars create totally new character of the architecture, new type of rythm. This provides a different perception and emotionality. It is a good choice for people hungry for new experiences. Sunlight becomes the contrast to interior shadows. Chiaroscuro is the reflection of people choices.

090

created structure this type of space has simultaneous and independent zones - closed gallery and open-air theatre. Structure becomes a living scenery and the extension of human movement. Here, architecture and sunlight play role of the actor and are the reason of strong and deep emotions. As a contrast gallery with the closed exhibition has spotlights focused at important things.

091

chaos structure each element of the structure is different and unique, without any rhythm. All of the fragments arise because of different people decisions. Thanks to full independence in creating light, which is needed the most and because of various reasons, intime enclaves and public spaces can be created at the same time.

092

093

094

line school

095

Line school is a synthetic project of a ground school, based on a simple scheme. Everything is being determined by stripes that are demarcating specific areas. Thanks to different heights of each elements, but also ordered structure, block becomes dynamic and contrasts the chaotic environment. Each module provides lighting because of height differences, creating also interesting light effects in the interior. Clear division of the interior helps children to orientate in the space, creating stimulating points of interest at the same time. Everything was divided in to functional areas, designed for older and younger children and also for loud and quiet zone.

The reflection of the dynamism and the form of the building can be found also in the terrain zone - green areas, courts and even a parking lot were determined by the lines of the building. Thanks to that both, interior and exterior, supplement and penetrate each other. That is why boundries between this two spaces obliterates, creating one, uniform, harmonious and amicable ecosystem.

Each classroom is a base module, surrounded by open-air patios with greenery, which provides high amount of daylight inside of the didactic rooms and also places to relax and play. Internal patios spreaded around the school were fulfilled with intense color accents. Because of a big amount of glazing, interior is bright, transparent and fully open. Main hall can be used as a multifunctional assembly hall.

bohema of the contrast

000 109

Bohema of the contrast is an idea of a whole new way of understanding of the residential building, designed in a complete contrast to those, that already exist. Ultimately it was supposed to be dedicated to artists of Wroclaw. It is not about closing in a simple box, but about induction of emotion and contrasting feelings from the way how people precieve architecture and also creating living organism.

But not only residents are allowed to do that everyone can integrate with them, because building is a kind of a background for various events, an art gallery, which allows residents to present their works. Each aspect of human nature reflects in this building - it was designed to show their unique and contrasting personalities.

Whole building is based on using individual, habitable modules, which become a part of private living space. Access to them is provided by galleries, again contrasted to those which are already known. They create a path system at each floor, that can spread into common terraces and narrow, when it is needed. It is this galleries, which should become an excuse and also opportunity for meetings, new way of integration - they allow to create intimate and common spaces, they let residents to take a look inside neighbors flats, in opposition to what is a todays standard. Furthermore, holes appearing between floors provide daylight and let residents to take a deeper look into the structure of the building.

119

The INside OUTside habitat is an idea for the whole housing area. It was based on a main module - house designed as a luxurious mansion for a doctor, with additional building including the office. Everyting is determined by the shapes of the building - paths, water, even greenery. Houses were designed in the way to create strong, emotional connection between interior and exterior. Each house is able to be opened, so greenery could pour into the house. In the centre of each house the spatial, multifunctional box-like module was designed. The structure of this element allowed to create different spaces, which include kitchen, dining room, living room and hobby room. What is more, this box divides the entire house into different areas, however, because of its structure, it was possible to keep the open space character. Most of the functions were hidden inside of thick walls. Habitat was designed as a sustainable settlement, with ecological systems, watercourses and green areas. To make the habitat even more eco-friendly, it was partially based on a usage of recycled materials.

oHouse simply shows how valuable reccurent element can be. Main concept was to capture the emotional feeling of deep perspectives - thanks to the design users can easily see through the whole building. Multifunctional modules, with windows-like-openings in the centre of each, were placed in every room, as a type of new understanding of a wall or rather a division of a space, but with different functions, that reflects needs of certain space. Each room is also at the higher level, than the previous one, due to the rise of the terrain, fulfilled by open-air terrace. Moreover, the deeper part of the house, the more private it is. Thanks to different heights of floors and the terrain, it was a possibile to create an underground parking. To intensificate emotional feeling of the house, last floor has been placed at such level, that allows users to admire the view of the sea. Because modules are actually the only walls in the building, users have no obstacles of experiencing and interacting with surrounding nature.

living room module

kitchen module

module simply allows to organise basic needs of the living room. Thanks to open character, every element such as books, etc. is esily accessible.

module provides basic equipment, like cupboards or fridge. The sink has been integrated into the module, and became an integral part of it. The rest of the equipment is provided by an island in the centre of the kitchen, extended by a table.

bathroom module

wardrobe module

in this module again all of the equipment has been hidden inside of it, with a shower and toilet. Same as in the kitchen, the sink has been integrated into the module.

wardrobe modules, that appear in the house in few variants, have the same character - all of them can be used as a storage. What is more, each of them have a place to sit and relax.
