FROM THE EDITOR This colour edition is the start of an association with a new printer and we hope you enjoy the change. We plan to continue i n this format and the only black & white photographs or diagrams you will see in the future will be those that started out that way. We will be missing the Wolseley Herald for a couple of editions as Scribus and his good lady have headed north on holidays. As always I am looking for articles and/or photographs for the Hornet, which will look even better in colour. I am also hoping for a new Club Captain to step forward, another report for the Hornet as well as photographs from the outings that he/ she organizes, where are you?? I hope you enjoy this edition. John.

SPECIAL EVENTS Thanks to all those who attended the outings and guest speakers over the last 12 months. Unfortunately the attendance was sometimes disappointing. Although I realise none of us are always able to turn up to visits and presentations it is embarrassing when only a few turn up, especially as those who oblige us with their time and talents reach so few in number. Maybe there should be fewer visits and presenters booked up through out the coming year? For our next outing, ( October 14th) We are invited to MAJOR ENGINE RECONDITIONING PTY.LTD. We are expected at 1/85 Hume highway Somerton 3062 at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday October 14th. This visit is recommended by our president, a long term friend of “Feuzi” the owner of this business. Novembers outing should appeal to the petrol heads among us. We are booked to take a tour of the HOLDEN SPECIAL VEHICLES factory on Thursday NOVEMBER 13th at 12 o,clock noon. They are located at 125 Rayhur Street Clayton.3168. More about that at the next general meeting. Finally, thanks to those who followed progress on my recent hospital visit. Yep, all is well. 6

Cheers Neil...

The Hornet Chronicles. By Max Shayler. Welcome to the all new Hornet Chronicles. Here we will mine the wealth of knowledge from the archives of Hornets past. Firstly, for those of you that don’t know me, a bit about myself. I have been a member of the club since 1992 and I joined after buying a 24/80. During the past 22 years I have served as Secretary for a number of years and along with Mark Gilbert looked after Regalia for a time. My partner Kerri and I moved from Melbourne to country Victoria (Heywood just north of Portland) in 2006. I sold the 24/80 and after being without a club car for a while I eventually bought a 6/110 MkII that is a well known club car. I also own a Wolseley WD8 Stationary engine that I have been able to show at a few outings. Living in the country doesn’t afford me much opportunity to attend meetings or outings, but, I do like to keep up to date via ‘The Hornet’ and occasional trips to Melbourne. I am very much looking forward to being the custodian of the archives and will be looking back to some old issues and bringing you information and the odd article from days gone by.

Now, let’s step into the way back machine and see what was happening in the April 1993 issue of “The Hornet’: The Club President was Fred Holmes, the Secretary Alison Neil and The Editor was Peter Richardson. The upcoming major outing was the “Wolseley Rally Rampage 1993”, which was the State Rally to be held in Beechworth on the weekend of the 24th & 25th of April. Sunday 4th April also saw an “Early Morning Breakfast Run” to a mystery destination close to central Melbourne. There was an excellent article, by Cliff Skinner, on the Gaydon Heritage Museum in the UK. This issue also included a featured article on ‘The Story Of The Wolseley Viper’. You could have picked up a very neat 1962 blue 24/80, registered, with some spares for $950 or a 1963 6/110 with a new interior, Reco-ed head and transmission for the asking price of $2,800. Both a bargain. Until next time, drive safely.

Wolseley line up at Mt Macedon recently. 7

MEMBERSHIP REPORT New Members: This month we welcome the following: # 1436 Mr Leo Van Kessel from Nubeena, TAS.................. 1948 Wolseley 18/85 Series III

# 1437 Mr Adam Noyce from Axdale, VIC, ............................. 1965 Wolseley 24/80 MK II # 1438 Mr Ron McMaster from Toorak, VIC, .......................... 1956 Wolseley 6/90 Series I # 1439 Mrs Tania Michail from Reservoir, VIC, ................................. 1961 Wolseley 15/60 We welcome the above members, and look forward to seeing them and their families at future club events.

Wolseley Nine follow-up As mentioned in last month's report, Tony Thompson was able to safely transport the little "Nine" back to Tassie without too much drama, and is now well into its restoration. However, he has struck a snag, and is hoping that Club Members will be able to assist. The diff in this car is in a very bad way, and at some time in the past appears to have had the pinion flange come loose. Not only has this irreparably damaged both the crown wheel and pinion gears, but to make matters worse, the pinion flange has been re-attached and welded back into place, throwing any hope of recovery well and truly out the window. If you know of anyone who may have any diff parts for either a Nine, Wasp, or even a Hornet, please let the club know ASAP so that we can get them to Tony.

Next Outing: Euroa Show'n'Shine As usual, Rob Asquith puts a huge amount of effort into this event, even though it is not now under his supreme command. He has promised to reserve the very best position for WCC members to display their cars. We hope that as many members as possible will take advantage of Robs kind offer and support this rapidly growing event. Euroa is a delightful country town, and the pleasant drive along the highway or through the back roads is always well worth the effort. We look forward to seeing heaps of Wolseleys there this year. Cheers, Graham Keys 9

A Visit to Nuffield Place When planning our recent visit to England, one of the destinations high on my list was Nuffield Place, the home of William and Elizabeth Morris, better known as Lord and Lady Nuffield. Nuffield Place, now under the care of the National Trust, is located 17 miles south east of Oxford, near the village of Nuffield. (Abingdon, the home of MG, another “must see” destination, is approximately mid-way between Oxford and Nuffield). Nuffield Place was Lord and Lady Nuffield’s home from 1933 until Lady Nuffield’s death in 1959. Lord Nuffield continued to live there until he died in 1963. Our first surprise was how difficult it was to find the property – it was our first day on the road in England, we had just had a flying rock break the windscreen of our rented car, our borrowed GPS didn’t recognise “Nuffield Place”, we had experienced a couple of UK roundabouts and we were both becoming quite frazzled and frustrated – on top of all that, we made the mistake of assuming that the National Trust property would be clearly signposted. But worst of all, several locals who we asked for directions had no idea of what or where it was, including a jolly chap driving an MGB and a gardener working on a property about two miles away. Just as we were about to give up the search, we stumbled across a small road side sign. The first exhibit we saw as we entered the property was a brick garage containing Lady Nuffield’s 1946 Wolseley 8, registered BUD650 which she used for local journeys around Henley and Wallingford. (Lord Nuffield owned an identical model and his vehicle 12

is now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust museum at Gaydon.) BUD 650 was sold in 1968, purchased by the Oxfordshire County Museum in 1988, restored in 2013 and returned to its home in Nuffield just recently. Although Lyn and I don’t often get invited to visit the homes of the rich and famous, we found that Nuffield Place is nowhere near as opulent or extravagant as one might anticipate. Lord Nuffield, by all reports, was a very frugal and humble tycoon, who gave

away most of what he earned – his attitude to wealth is probably summed up by an oft reported quote “I can only wear one suit at a time”. The main part of the building dates from 1914 and was bought by the Nuffields in 1933. Some building additions and alterations were undertaken at that time but in the words of the National Trust “while it gained in comfort and practicality, it never became lavish”. It is still remarkably original, each room furnished in the art deco style of the 1930s with the retention of the original furniture, furnishings, crockery and many of Lord and Lady Nuffield’s personal effects. In this brief article, it’s not possible to describe each room in turn – instead, I will focus on the ‘blokey’ things that I found of interest and which give an insight into the personality of Lord Nuffield especially. There are plenty of other

exhibits from the art deco era to interest visitors. Lord Nuffield’s career began in 1894 when, as a teenager, he started making bicycles in the garden shed of his parent’s home in Oxford. One of his bicycles, dating from 1909, is on display at Nuffield Place. As an aside, to promote his bicycle business, Will Morris (as he was known then) became a successful competitive cyclist, in 1900 holding concurrently no less than seven local cycling championships over distances from one to fifty miles, all achieved aboard a Morris cycle. The National Trust guidebook notes that “Lord Nuffield’s true personality is revealed in his bedroom. Filled with practical items and basic furniture, it tells of a man who didn’t believe in artifice or showiness. Over the bed is a tangle of wires leading to a reading light, rigged up by Lord Nuffield himself. The floor is covered, not with expensive rugs, but with pieces of sewn together carpet designed for the interior of his cars.” I have read, in the past, about a mini workshop that Lord Nuffield set up in his bedroom where he tinkered with mechanical things, especially clocks, when he was unable to sleep. There’s an eclectic range of ‘stuff’ in his workshop cupboard, which is about the size of a double wardrobe – including (according to the guidebook) a jar containing Lord Nuffield’s pickled appendix, but I don’t remember seeing that, despite spending several minutes checking out the contents of this cupboard. This strange contraption is in the billiard room and is described as “an electric exercise horse”, its function, apparently, much the same as a modern exercise bike. The ‘horse’ has two speeds - gallop and trot – and Lord Nuffield is said to have kept it in his office and used it on a daily basis. In the same room were other items associated with the great man – golf clubs, walking sticks, a bicycle (referred to earlier), and a framed newspaper report of an attempt to kidnap him, are four that spring to mind. Elsewhere throughout the house are wind up gramophones, radios and a 1955 HMV TV set, even a Cona coffee machine made in 1933. Lord Nuffield was apparently a quite heavy smoker, and is seen in photographs with a pipe or cigarette (usually a roll-your-own) in hand or hanging out of his mouth – there’s ashtrays, cigarette cases, lighters and other smoking related exhibits on Lord Nuffield’s dressing table, as well as a jar with a few cigarettes in it. There’s so much more to tell, but insufficient room to do so - this brief article has not done the visit justice and I would recommend that any Morris enthusiast visiting the UK make the effort to find Nuffield Place, because they won’t be disappointed. Tell the friendly National Trust staff on duty that you are a Morris enthusiast from Melbourne, and if our experience is anything to go by, you will be welcomed most warmly! For further information about Nuffield Place, check out http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nuffield-place/ 14

The Story of Alec McCulloch. This is not a Wolseley story or even about cars, it is the biography of my next door neighbour, just turned 98 and living on his own, his wife having died a few years ago and no children or grandchildren in Melbourne. He is still active in Legacy and the Naval Officers Club (he knew our founder Peter Richardson), he goes swimming three times a week and attends to many domestic chores. He likes the horse racing, is an ardent Footscray supporter and enjoys watching them and other sports on the TV. He likes a night out and has Bev & I at the RSL or the local pub every month. This article was derived from an interview done 12mths ago on his 97th birthday—I hope you find it as interesting as I did. John.

This issue covered 8 Wolseley models and also Stationary Engines and VP cars. This covers the greatest number of Wolseley Club cars. The Register for the remainder of Wolseley models from veteran to 450, is currently in process but is stalled as I need more information from members. I am now working on forms and mailing database and will soon mail out requests for Registrars 2014 Update for these vehicles. When this is complete and using the information hopefully supplied, the remainder of the Register will be completed. Then the earlier sections will be updated. Are you bored? The modern car you’re driving not ringing your bell? Time to go grab a classic! The issue which confronts many of us, are the high costs involved. Since the new Club Permit Scheme was introduced, enthusiasts have been able to enjoy driving their classic without the monumental registration charges… $62.00 or thereabouts for 45 days driving, or around $115.00 for 90 days. Insurance is very affordable as well. So it would appear that the high costs are the vehicles themselves. Cars that were a couple of thousand dollars new are now changing hands for ten times that figure complete with body filler, oil leaks and a host of wild tales from over zealous sellers… and to raise this kind of money is a tall order for most of us. Forget it! Come to the Chookshed and browse our range of restorable projects. Every month this location is populated with true enthusiasts that can give legitimate advice on the varying facets of automotive restoration. Take a look at this stunning C-Series engine (below) that has been restored by Graham Keys. This is not a mere “re-ringer” this is work of irrefutable concours quality. We all have an extremely eclectic range of experiences with classic cars and you’d be amazed when talking with these folk what can be learned.

So let’s get down to business… What type of budget do you have in mind? It’s quite often stated, that when restoring a car, work out a worst case scenario budget… then double it. Quite true if you intend to contract out all of the work, but if you attempt it yourself, this simply does not apply. Plus, you reap the rewards in driving a car that you restored. Take this little English bodied Wolseley 1500 (above right). A rare example indeed, given that most were assembled here in Australia. A small car, easy to work on, easy to store parts, easy to find replacement parts and there’s a mountain of knowledge on tap from our members… Empty your change tin, you probably have 30 most of the $500.00 you need to secure it…

The 1500 not floating your boat? How about a pair of 24/80’s for $200.00! Two hundred… that’s a Gas bill, some groceries, or one packet of cigarettes … it isn’t much at all. There’s a MkI and MkII car in the package, so you restore the car that pleases you aesthetically. Then you can choose whether you would like a vinyl or leather interior, you pick the best engine, etc. etc. It makes terrific sense in terms of sanity and economics to play your cards this way… then when you’ve got the car you want, you sell off the other and recover half of your initial outlay!

Discuss the Chookshed with anyone who has attended and you will hear these words “Award Winning Slice.” A term coined by John Mallia in reference to the slice baked by Bev Gray. Look at the picture of it (above left)… No seriously, really look at it... hungry? To attendees of Chookshed working bees, this is a very familiar sight, we also have Morris Muffins, Whiffin Sausage Rolls, Wilson Sandwiches and a host of other delectable foods… but that slice… I have never had the pleasure of meeting Bev, but if she would like to adopt a new son, I will forward my contact Peter Anderson. 31 details.

Vehicles or parts for sale or wanted will be listed here for a maximum of three issues - please notify the editor if the vehicle or parts have been sold/obtained earlier. We have limited space available for this service which may limit what or if we can list. The deadline for inclusion in the next edition is the weekend of the Saturday working bee.
