GROWING UP IN THE NEW AGE MARJOLAINE RYLEY
UNTIL 7 JULY
UNTIL 3 NOVEMBER
23 JUNE - 8 SEPTEMBER
BILSTON CRAFT GALLERY
An exhibition of over 150 intricate jewellery items and headpieces made during Nora Fok’s 30 year career. Her jewellery is painstakingly hand-made from nylon thread as fine as sewing cotton. The artist knits, knots, plaits and weaves this fibre to create imaginative pieces inspired by geometry, astronomy and patterns in nature. Recently Fok has experimented with digital design and making processes; examples of her ‘computer-knitted’ bangles will also be on show.

The production of japanned ware in Wolverhampton dates from the 1760s, when a factory was established at the Old Hall works, to the 1920s when Henry Loveridge’s Merridale works ceased production. Japanning refers to thick varnishes applied to decorate and protect a variety of materials, including tin and papier-mâché, in the style of oriental lacquer ware. Wolverhampton holds one of the best collections of japanned ware in the country.

DRAWN TO CRAFT
BILSTON CRAFT GALLERY
21 JULY - 22 SEPTEMBER Discover how the drawn line has inspired many contemporary craftspeople working in a range of media including textiles, ceramics, glass and metal. Examples of a bold abstract use of line, found in Vicky Shaw’s ceramics, contrast with a more illustrative style of drawing in Lauren van Helmond’s lighthearted 3D wire sketches of everyday scenes. From layered paper cuts to pin and thread pictures, this show explores how the materials and processes of craft challenge and stretch the art of drawing.
