Guildhall, City of London
In association with
Women for Women International works with women in eight countries where war and conflict have devastated lives and communities. In a world where 70% of the poorest are women, investing in women is crucial to achieving broader long-term development goals. As the hallmark of a civilised society, the wellbeing of women has critical implications for communities and ultimately nations as a whole. This is particularly true in war and post-war contexts. Women are disproportionately affected by conflict; they are targeted for rape and violence, they are forced from their homes, they lose husbands and children and often become the sole providers for their families. Yet, despite the atrocities and brutalities women endure, their overriding courage, strength and hope continue to sustain them and inspire the rest of us. Since its foundation in the US in 1993, Women for Women International has helped more than 398,000 women across Afghanistan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Sudan. When women enrol in our one-year programme, they receive financial and emotional support, education and job training, as well as access to business skills, capital and markets. They leave the programme with an understanding of their rights and how to fight for them, having developed important, supportive social networks. By distributing more than £64 million in direct aid and micro-credit loans, Women for Women International has helped women survivors move toward economic self-sufficiency, providing access to economic and social opportunities that bring independence and respect. We know that lasting change can only be achieved when women have access to both knowledge and resources. In providing women survivors with the tools necessary to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, we create viable and long-lasting change in communities. We are changing the world one woman at a time. The UK Gala 2012 marks the 6th anniversary of Women for Women International UK. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our work to date and helping us raise much-needed funds and awareness to support our goals for the future.
One woman can change anything, many women can change everything

This evening’s special guests
Gertrude Mudekereza, Country Director, Democratic Republic of the Congo Gertrude Mudekereza was born in 1957 in South Kivu province, Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she grew up and has spent her life. Her father worked for the DRC National Company for Coffee and Tea, and much of Gertrude’s childhood was spent in rural areas at their offices. As the eldest of 11 children, Gertrude’s sense of affection for and desire to help others began at a young age. As a child, she was an active member of the Catholic XAVERIAN Movement, where she provided company to isolated older women and assisted them in their daily chores such as collecting firewood, washing clothes, and collecting water. Today, Gertrude is married and the mother of four children. Both she and her husband are deeply committed to their work for international organisations. Gertrude started her working career as a social assistant for the Ministry of Social Affairs, and moved on to work in the American Peace Corp Programme as a language teacher. In 1994, when the genocide in Rwanda caused mass population movement to the DRC in North and South Kivu provinces, Gertrude decided to join the UN World Food Programme, and was part of the team assisting millions of refugees who were struggling in very poor living conditions. She was a key staff member, serving initially as Food Aid Monitor and then as National Officer in charge of food distribution. She worked on The Nutrition Programme, The Rape Survivors Programme and The Non Accompanied/Street Children Programme for almost 13 years. This work developed her passion and commitment to assist vulnerable groups- especially women, orphans, malnourished children and young girls. Gertrude joined Women for Women International in 2008 and is particularly dedicated to the organisation’s holistic approach and focus on sustainability. Gertrude draws her inspiration and dedication from Women for Women International’s mission to help vulnerable women. With a very personal understanding of what it means to be a woman in today’s war-torn DRC, Gertrude truly embodies what Women for Women International represents – she in an inspiration in her community and to us all.

Case Study Domitile, Rwanda I’m 65 years old and a mother of 13 children. I am married and live in Bukavu with nine of my children and my husband – my other children have sadly died. Three years ago rebels came to my village in Walungu territory whilst my husband and I were asleep in our house. They looted everything; goats, cows - everything we had they took away. I tried to escape. One of them chased me and I fell into a very deep trench, breaking my back. The rebels jumped inside after me and raped me in the trench. Women from my church found me after I was attacked and took me to the hospital. Fortunately for me, I was not infected with HIV. I went to three hospitals in total and spent two months having treatment. Meanwhile, the rebels had taken my husband to the forest where he spent two months being beaten every day. He now has no teeth and trouble breathing because they beat him so severely. Fortunately, he was able to escape and find me again. Our house was destroyed and we had to leave the area because it was not safe to stay. Before the conflict I was strong; I had my cows and my house in the village, I could eat milk, beans, potatoes - whatever I wanted. After, I had to beg to survive, I suffer whenever I think about it. It is not easy for me, I need support to forget what happened to me. Panzi Hospital referred me to Women for Women International after my treatment so that I could have economic support. Since I have been with Women for Women International, I have received sponsorship funds and I am saving three dollars a month and I am learning soap-making. It is thanks to Panzi Hospital and Women for Women that I live today. May God bless them.

Live Pledge For the Women of Democratic Republic of the Congo Tonight, we ask you to pledge as much as you can to achieve our mission of raising £150,000 to help 600 women in Democratic Republic of the Congo Democratic Republic of the Congo has been described as the worst place in the world to be a woman or a child. Despite the signing of international peace agreements, a brutal conflict continues to devastate Eastern DRC. Women have shouldered a disproportionate burden of the conflict. Every hour, about 48 women are raped in DRC. This means 1,152 women every day, and more than 410,000 in one year.
This is the reality for women in DRC: • 80% of us are from villages that have been attacked • More than half of us think about hurting ourselves • 60% of us are illiterate • Half of us only eat one meal per day • 42% of us have never attended school • 7 out of 10 of us live below the global poverty line
This is what your support will do: Women in DRC will receive education in rights awareness, life skills training and vocational training, numeracy and business skills. The one-year programme was developed for DRC’s specific challenges and demands. For 2012 the vocational training options for women in DRC are agriculture, tie-dying, soap making, small business management, bread making, ceramics, brick making, tailoring, beauty care, and basket making.
“The reality for a Congolese woman often is that she is the one buying the food, paying the rent and schools fees, the one working on the farm, kitchen and markets. This is hard in a community where sexual violence, HIV-AIDS, poverty, unfair cultural practices and human rights violations are prevalent”. Gertrude Mudekereza, Country Director, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Case Studies
Jeanette Mabango Mapendo Democratic Republic of the Congo Jeanette is the mother of four daughters. Her home was invaded by rebels who brutally attacked and raped her and killed her husband. She was pregnant at the time and subsequently miscarried from the assault. She also lost a leg. After the attack she had no choice but to become a beggar to support herself and her daughters. While begging, she met an evaluation officer from Women for Women International who helped her get clothes and money for food. She has since received trauma and psychological help from Women for Women International and physical help from the Panzi hospital. She has learnt that she can have a skill despite physical limitations, and now sells doughnuts and toys at the market.
Theonilla Rwanda Theonilla is married with 5 children. She started the programme with Women for Women International in October 2010, when she was 8 months pregnant. Before she joined the programme, the brutal conflict in Rwanda had left Theonilla and her family very poor. She was unable to afford health care or send her children to school. Since joining, her life has changed considerably. The sponsorship funds which she receives every month have helped her to buy medical insurance, to pay school fees for her children and to buy pigs. She has also started an income generating activity in a small market in their village where she sells soap and salt. Theonilla’s hard work has also created a job for her husband who runs a small business in the market near their home. With the knowledge she acquired from the training, she engaged in productive farming where she is now involved in mainly growing of pineapple, maize and banana. This is supplemented through the rearing of livestock such as cows and pigs. Theonilla is very grateful to her sponsor sister and to Women for Women International for changing her life, and giving her family a future.
